TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT THAT CONTROLS THE ELECTRIC STEERING FAILED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 106,000. UPDATED 03/20/13*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED HIS SON WAS DRIVING, WHEN THE STEERING BECAME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO OPERATE. AS HIS SON PULLED INTO THE REPAIR SHOP, HE COULD BARELY TURN INTO THE PARKING SPACE. THE STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. UPDATED 06/13/13
WHEN THE CAR HAD ABOUT 37,000 MILES I STARTED HEARING A RATTLE COMING FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR. THE CAR NOW HAS 50,000 + MILES AND I HEAR THE RATTLE ALL THE TIME. I SEARCHED EVERY ONLINE FORUM REGARDING RATTLES COMING FROM THE BUMPER WITH NO FINDINGS. IN CONVERSATION WITH A TOYOTA SERVICE REP, HE TOLD BE IT COULD BE THE ROOF BRACE AT THE B PILLAR. I FURTHER INVESTIGATED THE PROBLEM ON LINE AND SAW SEVERAL REPORTS WHERE THE 2008 THROUGH 2009 DOES HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE LEFT SIDE ROOF BRACE AT THE B PILLAR NOT BEING WELDED TO THE FRAME. I REMOVED ENOUGH INTERIOR PARTS TO CONFIRM THE ROOF BRACE IS NOT WELDED TO THE STRUCTURE ON THE LEFT SIDE. IS SEEMS THE ROOF SUPPORT NOT BEING WELDED WOULD WEAKEN THE CRASH RESISTANCE IN A SIDE IMPACT. I ALSO NOTED SEVERAL COMPLAINT OF STRESS CRACKED WINDSHIELDS WHICH MAY BE RELATED TO A LOOSE B PILLAR ROOF BRACE. *TR
2008 TOYOTA SCION XB. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE WINDOW MALFUNCTION. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, TO HAVE THE RECALL ISSUE ADDRESSED. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE MASTER WINDOW SWITCH, BUT THE WINDOW MOTOR IN THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WAS WORN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AT A COST OF $ 502.03. THE CONSUMER STATED THE SWITCH MALFUNCTIONED MONTHS BEFORE THE RECALL. THE MASTER SWITCH IN THE DRIVER'S DOOR PANEL FOR THE PASSENGER WINDOW WOULD STICK IN EITHER THE FULL UP OR FULL DOWN POSITION AND HE COULD HEAR THE ELECTRIC WINDOW MOTOR CONTINUE TO RUN WHEN THE SWITCH WAS RELEASED. *JB
WHILE DRIVING ON SNOWY AND SALTED ROADS, THE BRAKE, ABS, AND VSC LIGHTS ALL CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. THEY REMAINED ON WHILE DRIVING ON THOSE SAME SNOWY AND SALTY ROADS. THE NEXT DAY THEY EVENTUALLY WENT OFF. WEEKS LATER THEY CAME ON AGAIN IN WET WEATHER AND REMAINED ON. THE LOCAL TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER DUPLICATED THE ISSUE AND PULLED THE DIAGNOSTIC CODES C0210 & C1238. THE TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER SAID THE ENTIRE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY HAD TO BE REPLACED AS THE INTERNAL ABS SENSOR WHICH THEY SAID WAS AT FAULT WAS NOT SOLD SEPARATELY AND ONLY CAME AS PART OF THE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY KIT. THEIR QUOTE TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE WAS $915 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF ONE HUB AND BEARING KIT! THIS IS RIDICULOUS. BRAKE SENSORS SHOULD NOT FAIL DUE TO SNOW, SALT, OR WATER COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THEM. THIS IS A DANGEROUS FLAW IN THE DESIGN OF THIS VEHICLE AND ONE THAT IS NOT COMMONLY FOUND WITH OTHER MAKES AND MODELS, BUT IS COMMONLY REPORTED ALL OVER THE INTERNET FROM OTHER OWNERS OF TOYOTA'S SCION XB. TOYOTA SHOULD ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS VEHICLE AND COVER THE COST TO REPLACE THE SENSORS WITH ONES THAT DO NOT FAIL DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE FRONT HOOD FLEW OPEN AND STRUCK THE ROOF OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WOULD SEND AN INSPECTOR TO FURTHER ASSESS THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000.
AT RANDOM TIMES ALL OF THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS AND OTHER LIGHTS ON THE DASH ILLUMINATE. IT ALSO SEEMS TO GET HARDER TO STEER THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS A WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND DRUM THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND POSSIBLY AN AXLE OR SPINDLE. FOR A CAR BOUGHT NEW IN 2008 WITH ONLY 42,000 MILES THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD STAND BEHIND THE PRODUCT. I AM CONCERNED OF THE SAFETY OF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AND HAVING A WHEEL COME OFF. THE DEALER WANTS A BUNCH OF MONEY TO FIX IT. UNHAPPY TOYOTA OWNER. *TR
SCION HAS A TSB ON PARKING BRAKE CABLES THAT FREEZE IN COLD WEATHER. WHEN THE CABLES FREEZE, IT WILL CAUSE THE REAR BRAKE CALIBERS TO LOCK AGAINST THE ROTORS. YOU WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE ABOUT 10 MINUTES TO WARM THE ROTORS TO UNLOCK THE BRAKES. THIS COULD CAUSE BRAKES TO FAIL AND MAY NOT STOP AT ALL. I DROVE THE SCION ABOUT 1 MILE WHEN A CAR MADE A LEFT TURN IN FRONT OF ME AND THE BRAKES AND OR TRACTION CONTROL FAILED TO WORK. I'VE NOTICED THAT THE CAR STILL HAS STOPPING PROBLEMS WHEN ITS COLD. I WAS LUCKY IT WAS A LOW SPEED CRASH THAT CAUSED ABOUT 5000 IN DAMAGE. SCION TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THESE CARS FOR BRAKES AND ONLY YOUR TOYOTA MECHANICS KNOW OF THE PROBLEM. *TR
TOTAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING. WARNING LIGHT WAS DISPLAYED ON THE DASH. TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. THERE WAS A TSB ISSUED BUT I'M TOLD MY VIN ISN'T ONE EFFECTED. *TR PROBLEM IS A DEFECTIVE COMPUTER (ECM) UNDER THE DRIVER DASH. LOSS OF POWER STEERING IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. TOYOTA DOWNPLAYED IT AS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. IT ONLY TOOK ME 4 MINUTES TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS.
DISCOVERED TWO WIRES THAT TORE THROUGH THE FABRIC ON THE BACK OF THE DRIVERS SEAT. THESE EXPOSED METAL WIRES ARE SHARP AND CAN EASILY CUT SOMEBODY IF THEY SHOULD RUB AGAINST THEM. SOMETHING HAS FAILED INSIDE THE SEAT. MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME ISSUE ON A DEDICATED ONLINE FORUM FOR THIS VEHICLE. NOT ISOLATED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED HE NOTICED THERE WAS A FRACTURE ON THE DRIVER SIDE WINDSHIELD. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF IMPACT ON THE GLASS. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INSTRUCTED HIM TO MAKE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 22,000. ENGINE LOCKED. MY CAR WAS DIAGNOSED WITH "OIL STARVATION", WHICH WAS DUE TO SCION'S "OIL CONSUMPTION" PROBLEM. BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE MY OIL CHANGES DONE AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY FOUND A LOOP HOLE TO AVOID PAYING FOR A NEW ENGINE. THERE HAS BEEN A TSB ISSUED ON THIS PROBLEM AND SCION REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. *TR
MY 2008 SCION XB IS BURNING THROUGH OIL AT A CRAZY RATE. I DRIVE 100 MILES A DAY AND EVERY TWO DAYS I HAVE TO PUT A WHOLE QUART OF OIL. I HAVE READ ONLINE ABOUT ALL THE COMPLAINTS BUT TOYOTA WILL NOT PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. MY SCION IS NOW AT 175,000 MILES AND ENGINE SOUND BECOMES WORSE AND WORSE. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SCION XB. THE CONTACT STARTED THE IGNITION AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL HOWEVER, HERE WAS NO RESPONSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE STEERING COMPUTER WAS FAULTY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000.
THIS VEHICLE HAD A LOT OF ISSUES, FIRST THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT FAIL 12/26/09 TOYOTA FIXED/REPLACED NOW 4/3/12 DISCOVERED OIL IS BURNING TO THE POINT THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. CHECKED OIL NO OIL SHOW ON OIL DIPSTICK THEN WENT TO AUTOZONE BOUGHT THE OIL AND TOPPED IT OFF 4/3/12. BEFORE THIS BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS FAIL WORN OUT. REPLACED BOTH SIDES COST ALMOST $900 JUST PARTS ALONE. I'VE NEVER OWN A NEW CAR BEFORE THAT HAS SO MUCH ISSUES LIKE THIS ONE. THIS VEHICLE IS POORLY MADE AND TOYOTA SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. IS THIS MEAN I WILL HAVE TO TOPPED OFF MY VEHICLE EVERY OTHER WEEK OR CHANGE MY REAR BEARING AND HUBS EVERY 50-70 MILES OR SOONER? THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND THIS IS NOT TOYOTA IT USED TO KNOWN FOR. I OWN HONDA/ACURA AND NISSAN NEVER HAVE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. NOT EVEN ONCE AND HAVE THE VEHICLE MORE THAN 5-7 YEARS ALREADY. NOW MY REAR DOOR/TRUNK DON'T WANT TO OPEN LIKE THERE IS TIME DELAY OR SOME TYPE. WHY AREN'T TOYOTA WARN PEOPLE OF THE KNOW ISSUES OR FIXED IT BEFORE THEY SELL IT? *TR
STEERING PROBLEM ON THE 2008 TOYOTA SCION XB WE BOUGHT A 2008 SCION XB THAT HAVE BEEN WORKING FINE UNTIL THIS SCARY PROBLEM TOOK PLACE. WE CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW PROBLEMATIC THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING CAN BE. WE ARE FILING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE SAFETY IS OUR MAIN CONCERN AND THE STEERING PROBLEM IS LIFE THREATENING. AS WE STARTED THE CAR, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY STIFF AND DIFFICULT TO TURN. IMMEDIATELY WE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP. WE SPOKE WITH THEIR SERVICE MANAGER AND HE CONFIRMED THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT UNKNOWN AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. WE ASKED FOR A PRICE ESTIMATE AND HE SAID THAT WITHOUT WARRANTY IT WILL BE PROXIMATELY $800.00. WE TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A VERY WELL EXPERIENCE MECHANIC. HE CONFIRMED THAT THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND IT SHOULD BE TAKEN DIRECTLY TO DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. IMAGINE SUCH PROBLEM TAKEN PLACE WHILE DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY!!!!!! IN ALL FAIRNESS IF THEY'VE DESIGNED SOMETHING THAT'S PRONE TO FAILURE, THE ULTIMATE PRICING SHOULD CLEARLY REFLECT THAT FACT. THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE NOT ONLY FOR THE REPAIR DAMAGE BUT FOR EVERY INNOCENT LIVES THAT WERE LOST. AT JUST OVER 38,000 MILES THE BRAKE, ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND VSC LIGHTS ALL ILLUMINATED ON MY DASH. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IT IS MOST LIKELY THE REAR SPEED SENSORS BUT ALSO REQUIRES HUNDRED OF DOLLARS WORTH OF OTHER PARTS TO REPLACE. I LOOKED ON MANY OF THE SCION XB FORUMS AND FOUND MANY MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. SINCE I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR(FROM NEW) IT HAS BEEN A PAIN. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE O2 SENSOR THE CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND THE LOW WHEEL PRESSURE LIGHT GOES ON WHEN IT IS COLD OR WET OUT. SO MUCH FOR TOYOTA RELIABILITY. I OWNED A 1985 TOYOTA CELICA THAT HAD 185000 MILES ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT DROVE IT FOR 3 YEARS AND PUT ON AN ADDITIONAL 100000 MILES MYSELF AND ALL I HAD TO REPLACE WAS AN ALTERNATOR BELT. SO WHY AM I HAVING SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH A CAR THAT IS 23 YEARS NEWER. I HAVE ALSO RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE IGNITION COILS. SEEMS TO ME AS THOUGH ALL OF US THAT OWN THESES XB'S HAVE BEEN SUCKERED INTO BUYING LEMONS. *TR
THE ABS, VSC AND BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON. HAD TO PAY 110.00 TO HAVE DIAGNOSTICS RUN-THEY FOUND THAT THE R REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WIRE HAD FRAYED AND MALFUNCTIONED. I AM ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR BUT THE CONSULTANT AT TOYOTA TOLD ME THAT MY ABS, VSC WILL NOT WORK BECAUSE THE SENSOR IS BAD. SO I HAVE TO PAY $ 1070.16 TO REPLACE THE R REAR HUB,BEARING, SENSOR AND HARNESS. I FEEL THIS IS POOR DESIGN AND FROM WHAT I SEE ON THE INTERNET, THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED ISSUE. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO POOR DESIGN-TOYOTA/SCION IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND SHOULD RECALL FAULTY PARTS/DESIGN. *KB
MALFUNCTIONING RIGHT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CAUSES ABS AND VSC LIGHTS TO GO ON AND WHEN LIGHTS ARE ON THE ABS AND VSC DO NOT FUNCTION. WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE RIGHT REAR HUB, BEARING, SENSOR AND HARNESS. VEHICLE HAD ONLY 52939 MILES ON IT AND WAS OFF WARRANTY SO WOULD COST OVER 1000.00 TO REPAIR. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, LIGHTS HAVE GONE OFF WITHOUT REPAIR. NOTED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH XB ,YET NO RECALLS. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE OIL WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE MOTOR. AS A RESULT, THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REBUILT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 57,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SCION XB. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL AND STABILITY CONTROL WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IN ADDITION, THE PARKING BRAKE BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE. THE MALFUNCTION OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED TO THE CONTACT THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE ABS SENSOR CONNECTOR WAS FAULTY AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,700.
EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. THE VEHICLE USES OVER 3 QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES (5000 MILE OIL CHANGE INTERVAL.) WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THE ENGINE MAY SEIZE WHILE DRIVING, DUE TO LACK OF OIL, CAUSING A CRASH. (TOYOTA ISSUED A TSB REGARDING THIS ISSUE IN 2011, DUE TO A DESIGN DEFECT.) *JS

THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE PISTONS IN THE ENGINE WERE NOT RETAINING OIL AS IT SHOULD. THE DEALER MADE REPAIRS TO THE PISTON ASSEMBLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED TO PAY FOR THE PART AND THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO COVER THE LABOR COSTS. THE INITIAL INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON PARTIALLY SNOW COVERED PAVEMENT. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SKID. THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL AND ABS SYSTEMS DID NOT WORK, AND THE BRAKE, ABS AND VSC LIGHTS CAME ON. THE WARNING LIGHTS REMAINED ON FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE DAY AS I CONTINUED TO DRIVE. AFTER THE WARNING LIGHTS TURNED OFF, THEY REMAINED OFF FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS, THEN THE ABS AND VSC SYSTEMS FAILED AGAIN AND THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS FAIRLY REGULARLY, SIX TO EIGHT TIMES PER YEAR. I WAS QUOTED A COST OF AROUND $1200 TO REPLACE THE REAR HUB ASSEMBLIES AND WIRING HARNESS REPLACED, WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

THE CONTACT STATED AFTER HAVING HIS VEHICLE IN FOR ROUTINE SERVICE CHECK THE MECHANIC ADVISED HIM THAT THE WIRING HARNESS ON THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND HE WAS WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM THEM. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000.
FOR THE 3RD TIME IN 18 MONTHS THE CLUTCH PEDAL STICKS MAKING THE VEHICLE NOT DRIVABLE. THIS SEEMS TO OCCUR AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED, BUT I DREAD IT OCCURRING IN TRAFFIC OR ON THE FREEWAY. DEFECTIVE BRAKES OR RELATED PROBLEM WITH 2008 SCION XB MODEL. WHEN VEHICLE COMES TO A STOP, A LOUD, LOW/DOWNWARD PITCHED SOUND OCCURS AND IT FEELS LIKE EITHER THE BRAKES ARE GRINDING OR SOMETHING RELATED TO THE DRIVE TRAIN IS HAVING A PROBLEM. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM, BUT OCCURS MOST OFTEN AFTER THE CAR HAS SIT IDLE FOR AWHILE. TOYOTA TECHNICIANS DROVE THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS AND SAID THEY EXPERIENCED/HEARD THE PROBLEM, BUT WERE NOT SURE WHAT IT WAS OR HOW TO FIX IT. THEY LUBED THE FRONT BRAKE GLIDE PINS AND ADJUSTED SHIM PAN AND CHARGED ME $120 EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY. THE OTHER REPAIR WAS THAT THE WHEEL BEARING WAS BAD ON THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL AND THAT WHEN FIXED WOULD RE-SET THE SENSOR LIGHTS. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS FLAW IN THE DESIGN OF THIS VEHICLE AND TOYOTA SHOULD MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO REPAIR THE SENSOR PROBLEM.
