Failure to fix the problem in a reasonable period of time. Recall notice was sent March 22, 2021 and still no promised replacement of the defective part.
Sudden unintended acceleration: When pressing the brake on uneven paved roads the vehicle will suddenly accelerate while my foot is on the brakes. This has been an ongoing issue since I received the car and I was told this has to do with regenerative braking but it is definitely a safety issue. There are two commonly visited places on the freeway where this happens to me so I can definitely demonstrate the problem if needed.
I was notified of this recall in March/2021 and Tesla says they have no time to fix it and they will schedule my appointment at some point. My Navigation and other key functions freeze frequently in busy metropolitan areas as well as rural and fails to keep up with notifications causing unsafe driving conditions. The remedy they suggested was to delete my driving navigation history to free up space which takes a ridiculous amount of time and only temporarily solves the problem. The recall notice is below. The Feb 06,2021 Manufacturer Recall NumberSB2121001 NHTSA Recall Number21V035 Recall StatusRecall Incomplete Summary The eMMC flash memory device is rated for an industry-standard 3,000 Program/Erase (“P/E”) cycles. Over time, and depending on usage of the affected component, the eMMC hardware exhausts cycles for each NAND cell. When the eMMC NAND cell hardware reaches lifetime wear, as measured by the number of P/E cycles and remaining available storage capacity, the eMMC controller will no longer be able to maintain the integrity of the filesystem. This wear-out condition can cause failures of the center display software components, and may indirectly cause loss of the rearview camera display, defrost/defog control settings, and exterior turn signal lighting.
The contact owns a 2016 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that the display screen had gone completely blank without warning while driving. The contact was unable to use certain electrical features. The contact then received a recall notice for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V035000 (Back Over Prevention, Visibility, Exterior Lighting). Despite multiple appointment being made to service the recall, the contact was informed that the parts remained unavailable. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. Tesla refuses to refund my repaid related to NHTSA Recall No: 21V-035. I made a repair because of this issue back in March 2021 and soon after a recall notice came out on March 22, 2021 which I received at a later date due to the pandemic. I requested a formal refund but Tesla refuses to process my claim. I am bringing this to your attention as I believe this is unfair and Tesla should be accountable for the defective part they placed in my car. The eMMC failure of Tesla Model S/X manufactured from 2012 to mid 2018 has forced Tesla to issue a recall to replace the aforementioned eMMC chip. A failure in that chip means the AC controls stop working, as well as some lightning signals and the rear camera. I experienced the failure before Tesla issued a recall, when my vehicle had ~29000mi. Since the vehicle was not safe to drive, I did the repair myself: I bought an eMMC chip, I took out the Tegra daughterboard from the vehicle and brought it to an specialized electronics shop, they replaced the eMMC chip and I copied the contents of the old memory chip into the new one. Once Tesla offered the recall, they also offered a reimbursement for those who had paid out-of-pocket for this repair through an online form. I filled the online form, uploading invoices for the eMMC chip and the electronics repair shop work, but they denied my reimbursement. Because of that, I feel that Tesla has NOT honored the recall in my case.

CAR SUSPENSION FELT LOOSE AND WEIRD. UNDER NORMAL DRIVING (CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS), CHANGING LANES OR GOING OVER ROADS WITH SLIGHT CROWN OR RUTS CAUSED THE CAR TO SUDDENLY PULL AND SHIFT ERRATICALLY (ABOVE AND BEYOND THAT EXPERIENCED IN OTHER CARS). IT FELT AS IF THERE'S SOMETHING NOT RIGHT WITH THE FRONT SUSPENSION. WHEN THIS HAPPENED ON HIGHWAYS WHILE USING AUTOPILOT (EXPERIENCED AT LEAST THREE TIMES), THE CAR SWERVED LEFT AND RIGHT ERRATICALLY (AFTER CHANGING LANES) IN AN EFFORT TO RE-CENTER ON THE LANE WITHOUT SUCCESS, AND I HAD TO TAKE OVER MANUALLY IN OVER TO AVOID FROM FLIPPING OVER OR AN ACCIDENT. TESLA SERVICE CENTER INSPECTED THE CAR IN LATE 2019 AND SAID EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. THEY PERFORMED A 4-WHEEL ALIGNMENT BUT DID NOT IMPROVE THE BEHAVIOR. THIS BEHAVIOR HAS GOTTEN WORSE OVER THE PAST YEAR AND IS VERY CONCERNING. I ONLY HAVE A LITTLE OVER 30K MILES ON THIS CAR, AND THEREFORE DO NOT EXPECT SUSPENSION FAILURE AT THIS LOW MILES.
REAR VIEW CAMERA STOPPED WORKING, DO TO MEMORY BEING FULL.
MY 2016 TESLA (MANUFACTURED IN 01/2017, MILEAGE OF 60,400) HAD THE ISSUES WITH THE INSTRUMENT SCREEN BLACKOUT SEVERAL TIMES. EACH TIME, I LOST CONTROL OF THE TOUCH SCREEN, WHICH CAUSED THE LOSS OF REAR CAMERA VIEW, AC, LIGHT AND DRIVE CONTROL, ETC., ESPECIALLY THE FOGGED UP ON WINDSHIELD. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE. I SENT MY CAR TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER (TSC) IN MATTHEWS, NC ON 1/16/21 AND THEY REFUSED TO REPAIR MY EMMC AS MY CAR'S INSTRUMENT SCREEN COULD RESTART UP AND WAS NOT COMPLETELY DEAD. ANDY AT TSC TOLD ME THAT I'D HAVE TO WAIT FOR MY CAR TO DIE COMPLETELY AND TOUCH SCREEN BECOMES DEAD AND CANNOT BE RESTARTED IN ORDER FOR THEM TO SERVICE IT UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTEE. IRONICALLY, I PICKED UP MY CAR FROM TSC THIS PAST WEEKEND AND ON MY DRIVING HOME ON HIGHWAY I-85 SOUTH OUTSIDE CHARLOTTE, NC, I LOST MY TOUCH SCREEN AGAIN (SEE ATTACHED PICTURES). IT IS OUTRAGEOUS FOR TESLA TO IGNORE THIS PROBLEM. BY ASKING OWNERS TO EXPERIENCE A COMPLETE TOUCH SCREEN FAILURE BEFORE WARRANTEE SERVICES CAN BE ACTIVATED, TESLA IS COMMITTING SERIOUS CRIMES BY PUTTING DRIVERS IN DANGER!
I AM SURE YOU ARE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WHICH WAS JUST ANNOUNCED FOR RECALL - CENTRAL MCU UNIT CAUSES BLACK SCREEN WHICH STOPS MAJORITY OF CAR FUNCTIONS TO OPERATE. HOWEVER - HERE IS A NEW TWIST! MY UNIT WAS REPLACED 2 WEEKS AGO AND WITHIN 48 HOURS THE PROBLEMS ONGOING BLACK SCREEN PROBLEMS RE-APPEARED TWICE (PLEASE, SEE ATTACHED IMAGE). BROUGHT BACK THE VEHICLE TO TESLA REPAIR CENTER AND AFTER A WEEK TESLA'S RESPONSE - "WE RESET ERRORS AND YOU ARE ALL SET". THESE ORIGINAL MCU1 UNITS ARE FLAWED AND ARE A DANGER TO DRIVERS BECAUSE PROBLEMS CAN HAPPEN ANY TIME - WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING, BACKING-UP, PARKING OR CHARGING. THESE ISSUES CANNOT BE RECTIFIED ON THE ROAD AND ARE A TOTAL HAZARD. REPLACING ONE DEAD MCU1 WITH ANOTHER ONE IS SIMPLY DELAYING THE INEVITABLE. TESLA IS AWARE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN PROBLEMS WHICH IS WHY THEY NOT ONLY INTRODUCED A MORE STABLE MCU2 BUT ALSO HAVE BEEN VERY PROACTIVELY PUSHING CUSTOMERS TO PURCHASE IT.
THE MAIN SCREEN IS GETTING STUCK ON MY CAR, SOMETIMES GOING BLANK AND SOMETIMES RESETTING ITSELF THAT TAKES ABOUT 2-10 MINS. IT IS HAPPENING BOTH WHEN DRIVING AND WHEN SITTING IDEAL IN CAR. ONE DAY I WAS STUCK IN PARKING LOT FOR ABOUT 15 MINS TRYING FOR IT TO GET BACK UP. I'VE ENABLED "PIN TO DRIVE" FEATURE ON MY CAR, WITHOUT THE SCREEN I CAN'T EVEN MOVE THE CAR. THIS BECOMES VERY CHALLENGING, SPECIALLY WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO CAMERA OR MAPS ON BOARD. I'VE REACHED OUT TO TESLA ABOUT THIS THEY SAID DO A HARD RESET BUT THE PROBLEM STILL CONTINUES AND ARE ASKING $1500+ TO REPLACE IT WITH THE NEW ONE.
AFTER TESLA OFFERED THEIR INTERFACE UPGRADE FROM MC1 TO MC2, THE MC2 SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY WITH THE BACKUP CAMERA IS HORRIBLE. THERE ISN'T ANY LIGHTING AT NIGHT WHEN REVERSING AND THIS CAM HE BE DETRIMENTAL TO DRIVING AS A PERSON OR OBJECT CAN BE HIT. TESLA HAS NO SOLUTION YET AMD THE BACKUP CAMERA IS USELESS.
CENTER SCREEN FROZEN REPEATEDLY
NO AUDIO WITH TURN SIGNALS. ANIMATION WORKED ON SCREENS, AND TURN SIGNALS WERE ACTUALLY WORKING, JUST NO AUDIO. CHECKED ALL EXTERIOR LIGHTS AND ALL WORKED INCLUDING BACKUP AND BRAKE LIGHTS. AFTER REBOOT OF THE MCU1 AUDIO WORKED.
WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED IN THE LEFT LANE OF 3-LANE I95 NORTH (~11 MILES NORTH OF FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA) AROUND 6PM ON 1/15/2021, THE CAR SUDDENLY GAVE A SHAKE AND LOUD NOISE, AND IMMEDIATELY, WAS OUT OF CONTROL AND WAS JERKING VIOLENTLY SIDE TO SIDE BETWEEN LANES. I WAS SOMEHOW ABLE TO MOVE THE UNSTEERABLE CAR ACROSS 3-LANE TRAFFIC AND BROUGHT IT TO STOP ON THE RIGHT SIDE MEDIUM. THIS HAPPENED ON A BUSY HIGHWAY BEFORE MLK LONG WEEKEND. THANK THE MANY DRIVERS WHO MANAGED TO AVOID HITTING US, MY WIFE AND I MIRACULOUSLY SURVIVED THIS INCIDENT BUT LEFT SEVERELY TRAUMATIZED. THE SHAKE AND LOUD NOISE ARE LIKE CAR GOING OVER A POTHOLE. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NOT ANY POTHOLE ON THE LEFT LANE AS I DID NOT SEE CARS IN FRONT OF ME MOVING LIKE GOING A POTHOLE. WHEN I WAS WAITING FOR MY TOW TRUCK FOR THE NEXT 2 HOURS, I WATCHED CARS PASSING BY AND DID NOT SEE ANY CAR MOVING UNUSUALLY. THUS, I AM CERTAIN THAT THERE IS NO POTHOLE ON THE LEFT LANE. I INSPECTED THE CAR ON SITE, I NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER REAR WHEEL TILTED INWARD. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER AND THEY CONFIRMED THE $3,000+ SUSPENSION DAMAGE AND DAMAGES TO BRAKE LINE AS A CONSEQUENCE. MY TESLA MS IS EXACT 4-YEARS OLD (MADE IN 01/2017) AND 60,224 MILES DRIVEN. TO HAVE THIS EARLY SUSPENSION FAILURE DURING NORMAL DRIVING ON HIGHWAY WITHOUT ANY WARNING IS SIMPLY UNIMAGEABLE AND UNACCEPTABLE. THOUGH WE ARE VERY LUCK TO SURVIVE THIS, THIS SUSPENSION FAILURE CAN EASILY CAUSE MAJOR ACCIDENTS AND HAVE MANY PEOPLE KILLED. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE FOLLOWING THE INCIDENT, I FOUND THAT THIS IS NOT A SINGULAR INCIDENT. THERE IS A RECALL ON TESLA S/X SUSPENSION IN CHINA, TOO. IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR TESLA TO ISSUE A RECALL IN CHINA (A COUNTRY WITH WEAK CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS) BUT NOT IN USA. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact stated that occasionally the display failed to operate as designed. Additionally, while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled. Parts distribution disconnect.
MY CENTER CONSOLE AND MCU CONTINUES TO LOCK UP AND RESET. I HAVE ALERTED TESLA SERVICE CENTER MANY TIMES TO THIS ISSUE AND THEY TELL ME I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE UPGRADE OF THE MCU. THEY ACTUALLY KNOW THEY HAVE A PROBLEM AND TELLING ME THAT MY CAR DOES NOT FALL IN THAT CATEGORY FOR A RECALL. I REALLY THINK THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO CULL OUT THE FOLKS THAT ARE NOT PERSISTENT, AND FOR SOME REASON THEY STATE THAT I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY CAUSES A GREAT DEAL OF SAFETY AND ANXIETY BECAUSE MANY OF THE DRIVING FUNCTIONS ARE DISABLE UNTIL I RESET THE CAR. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE GIVEN THAT THE CAR COST ME OVER $90,000
WHILE PULLING MY CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE DRIVEWAY ON 1/8/2021, HEARD A METAL CRANKING NOISE AND I WASN'T ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT. AFTER INSPECTING THE WHEEL, NOTICED THE FRONT WHEEL ON THE DRIVER SIDE WAS TOUCHING/STUCK THE WHEEL LINER. SCHEDULED A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH TESLA AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE TESLA SERVICE CENTER TODAY, THEY IDENTIFIED BOTH FRONT FORELINKS NEED TO BE REPLACED. MY CAR MCU SCREEN HAS HAD PROBLEMS SINCE JUNE 2020 WITH BEING BLANK THAT WOULD NOT RECOVER WITH REBOOTING OR HARD RESET. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TESLA SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES DURING MY WARRANTY PERIOD. UNFORTUNATELY, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED AND I TOOK THE CAR IN AGAIN IN DECEMBER 2020 WHEN MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND TESLA CHARGED ME $200 TO REPLACE THE MCU/EMMC. I CONTINUED TO HAVE THE PROBLEM AFTER THE REPAIR. THE LAST TIME WAS ON 1/7/21. TESLA CLAIMED THAT MY PROBLEM IS NOT RELATED TO THE EMMC PROBLEM AND I AM NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE REFUND. EVEN THOUGH THEIR REPAIR WAS REPLACING THE MCU AND THE EMMC WITH A 64 GB CARD WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE REPAIR FOR THE ISSUE BEING RECALLED. WHEN MY MCU SCREEN WAS BLANK, I COULD NOT LOCK THE CAR DOORS, USE THE AC, START THE CAR, OR USE ANY FUNCTIONS ON THE SCREEN.
INFOTAINMENT SCREEN WILL GO BLACK PERIODICALLY, SOMETIMES RESTARTING, SOMETIMES NOT. CAN BE BLACK AND UNUSABLE FOR MINUTES OR HOURS, AND USUALLY WILL RESTART OVERNIGHT. BUT CAN HAVE MAJOR ISSUES WHILE DRIVING WITH NO SCREEN INCLUDING NOT BEING ABLE TO CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE, NO NAVIGATION, NO RADIO, NO BACKUP CAMERA, NO SAFETY FEATURES.
Brakes became 95% unresponsive after a car wash and near 0 degree F weather. This caused a low speed rear-end collision. Some ice build up on calipers, rotors were clean. Unsure of exact cause. Vehicle will be inspected ASAP, but I'm betting we find nothing after the ice dissipates. No warning lights. Contacted Tesla and remote diagnostics revealed no issues.
THE MAIN COMPUTER IN THE CAR GOES BLANK. THIS AFFECTS ALL PARTS OF THE CAR. IT HAS HAPPENED WHILE STATIONARY AND IN MOTION. WHEN IT SHUTS OFF YOU LOSE CONTROL OF ALL SYSTEMS INCLUDING: NAVIGATION, EMERGENCY BRAKING, LANE ASSISTANCE, USE OF CAMERAS, ALL ACCESS TO SAFETY FEATURES. I HAVE READ THERE IS A RECALL BUT WHEN I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER THEY REFUSED TO FIX THE ISSUE.
TOUCH SCREEN STOPS WORKING, REMOVES BACKUP CAMERA FEED AND ALL AUDIO ALERTS ARE SILENCED. THIS IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE EMMC FAILURE IN THE MCU TOUCH SCREEN.

PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
WHEN STATIONARY OR IN MOTION, BOTH ON CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS, AND EVEN TURNING THE FOLLOWING IS TRUE. THE CENTER INFOTAINMENT STACK BECOMES COMPLETELY FROZEN AND UNUSABLE. FOLLOWING THIS, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY RESTART, HOWEVER DURING THIS ENTIRE TIME, VITAL SAFETY FEATURES CONTROLLED THROUGH THE CENTER INFOTAINMENT STACK ARE UNAVAILABLE, INCLUDING BACK UP CAMERA FUNCTIONALITY. I HAVE APPLIED FOR THE WARRANTY PROGRAM TESLA HAS FOR REPLACING THE MCU1, HOWEVER, EACH TIME THEY INFORM ME MY CAR DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENT WITHOUT ELABORATING ANY FURTHER. HOWEVER, THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT THEY ARE IGNORING.
THE DISPLAY SCREEN HAS NOT BEEN WORKING PROPERLY. SOUNDS INCLUDING VOICE NAVIGATION AND TURN SIGNALS HAVE STOPPED WORKING. RESETTING THE SCREEN FOXES THE ISSUE FOR 1 DAY BUT THEN RETURNS. OTHER SAFETY SOUNDS INCLUDING PROXIMITY SENSORS ARE ALSO NOT WORKING.
THE CAR WAS PARKED AND RE-ENTER ABOUT 1 HOUR LATER, THE CENTRAL SCREEN WAS BLANK. ALL THE WINDOWS FOG UP AND CAN NOT DRIVER UNTIL ALL THE WINDOWS CLEAR UP. THE PIN TO DRIVER CAN NOT ENTER SCREEN WAS BLANK, HAS TO USED THE MOBILE APP TO START THE CAR TO DRIVE. ABOUT 20 TO 30 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE, THE SCREEN REBOOTED TO NORMAL FUNCTIONS.
The contact owns a 2016 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that after releasing the brake pedal while parking, the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration and lurched forward crashing into the rear of a second vehicle. During the incident, no injuries were reported and no police report was taken. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the incident. The contact indicated that prior to the incident a chip was installed due to a navigation problem. Also, the control panel display screen had a malfunction and audible warnings such as turn signals were not available. The failure mileage was 25,000
I AM THE OWNER OF A 2016 TESLA MODEL S 90D THE "CENTER SCREEN" IN THIS CAR IS CENTRAL TO THE USE OF MANY SAFETY FUNCTIONS OF THE CAR, SUCH AS THE REVERSE CAMERA, HEADLIGHT CONTROLS, DEFROSTER CONTROLS, AND TURN SIGNAL CHIMES. THE SCREEN IN MY CAR HAS BECOME HIGHLY UNRELIABLE, OFTEN LOCKING UP, REBOOTING, OR FAILING TO RESPOND, CAUSING THE AFOREMENTIONED FUNCTIONS TO BE UNAVAILABLE. IT IS MY OBSERVATION THAT THESE FUNCTIONS WORKED WELL IN THE PAST WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY DELIVERED, BUT HAVE DEGRADED OVER TIME AS TESLA HAS PUSHED SOFTWARE UPDATES TO MY CAR. I HAVE DISCUSSED THIS ISSUE WITH TESLA AND AM AWARE OF THE PROPOSED NHTSA RECAL OF THE CENTER SCREENS DUE TO A EMMC FLASH WEAR OUT ISSUE. TESLA HAS ASSURED ME THAT THIS IS NOT THE ISSUE WITH MY CAR, AND HAS REQUESTED THAT I WAIT FOR FUTURE SOFTWARE UPDATES TO RESOLVE THESE ISSUES. HOWEVER, IT IS MY OBSERVATION THAT SOFTWARE UPDATES HAVE CONTINUOUSLY MADE THIS SITUATION WORSE, AND TESLA HAS OFFERED NO SPECIFIC DATE ON WHICH THIS WILL BE RESOLVED. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR SAFETY FUNCTIONS OF A VEHICLE. TESLA HAS ALSO MENTIONED THAT I CAN UPGRADE TO "MCU2" AT A COST OF $3500, AND THAT THIS SYSTEM WORKS MUCH BETTER. OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO PAY TO MAINTAIN THE SAFETY AND FUNCTIONALITY OF THEIR VEHICLE. I REQUEST THAT YOU INVESTIGATE THE SCALE OF TESLA "MCU1" CENTER SCREEN ISSUES BEYOND THE EMMC FLASH ISSUE AND WORK WITH TESLA TO MAKE SURE THIS IS RESOLVED QUICKLY FOR THE 150,000 OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES
The multi-media screen when blank and would not reboot in Dec. 2020. It had gone blank before many times over the years (more than I think most cars) but always I was able to reboot the car/computer. I had complained a couple of times at the service center going back a few years and got advice to reboot. Lately it had been happening quite frequently. This time it would not work. I called Tesla and the rep asked if the turn signals worked and I confirmed that they did not. He indicated that this was a safety issue and I should not drive the car and schedule a repair asap. Meanwhile, I had already received a notice in the mail of a volunary repair that Telsa would do if the screen went out and woudl not rebooot. I was able to get an earlier appointment than the 2 week one that was offered by going into the Tesla service center (as they had advised I could try to do). I was later told that they would not voluntarily repair this for me and I would have to pay. It took them a number of days to get back to me on this. Tesla service center rep and manager indicated that even though the end result of my issue was the same -- no screen, no rear back up camera, no turn signals, no defrost presumably -- my issue was caused by a defective audio chip for the display and not the defective multi-media chip. I had the same safety issues but they required that I pay out of pocket fo the repair. They explained that Tesla had figure out a less expensive way to swap out the mulit media chip but for the audio chip it required a full replacement of the panel or something and that cost them more. I asked about who can i escalate this to and was told I woudl hae to write the legal department. I wrote the legal department on March 12, 2021 to request a refund. They have still not written me back or even acknowledged my letter. Since I wrote my letter to Tesla, my undestanding is that NHTSA has required Tesla to issue a recall to repair a blank screen chip issue.
TESLA HAS RECALL TO CHANGE MCU SINCE DECEMBER OF 2020. I HAVE CONTACTED THEM SEVERAL TIMES AND ANSWER IS ALWAYS PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE YET. I THINK THIS IS DELAY TACTICS. MY CAR SCREEN WENT BLANK SEVERAL TIMES AND I NOTIFIED THEM.
TESLA HAS A DAUGHTERBOARD MEMORY CARD RECALL IN PLACE, AND THE DISPLAYS IN MY CARD KEPT GOING BLANK FOR LONG PERIODS WHICH IS INDICATIVE OF THE MEMORY FAULT. DURING THE RECALL REPLACEMENT PROCESS ON MY CAR (9 DEC 2020) TESLA RAN DIAGNOSTICS THAT SHOWED THAT THE MCU WAS DEFECTIVE, AND THAT DEFECT IMPACTED THE DAUGHTER CARD SO THAT BOTH THE MCU AND DAUGHTERBOARD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS NOT GIVEN THE OPTION TO REPLACE THE DAUGHTER CARD WITHOUT ALSO REPLACING THE MCU. THE DAUGHTER CARD RECALL SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED AN MCU REPLACEMENT BECAUSE DEFECTS IN THE LATTER CORRUPT OPERATION OF THE FORMER. I WAS CHANGED FOR THE MCU REPLACEMENT, INCLUDING DIAGNOSTICS; THE NEW MCU INCLUDES A REPLACEMENT FOR THE DEFECTIVE DAUGHTER CARD, BUT I WAS NOT REFUNDED FOR THE RECALLED DAUGHTER CARD. TESLA CLAIMS A REFUND FOR THE DAUGHTER CARD MAY BE FORTHCOMING. NHTSA SHOULD EXPAND THE RECALL TO INCLUDE THE MCU AND TESLA SHOULD BE COMPELLED TO REFUND FOR REPLACED MCUS, LABOR, AND DIAGNOSTIC FEES.
The contact owns a 2016 Tesla Model S. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the instrument panel inadvertently turned blank and the defroster became inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated he was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that they could not repair the vehicle; however, the vehicle memory was reset. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer who informed the contact that they could not assist and advised him to depress an unknown button on the instrument panel to record the time of occurrence whenever the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred shortly after receiving the recall notice for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V035000 (Back Over Prevention, Visibility, Exterior Lighting). The contact stated he had not been contacted by the dealer for the recall repair as advised in the recall notification he received. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
MAIN ONBOARD COMPUTER CONSISTENTLY FREEZING AND CRASHING. REGULARLY MUST POWER CYCLE THE VEHICLE TO GET MAIN SCREEN TO BOOT. MAPS, NAVIGATION AND ALL CONTROL FUNCTIONS ACCESSIBLE VIA THE CENTER SCREEN ARE INACCESSIBLE WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE. BACK UP CAMERA, DEFROSTERS AND OTHER FUNCTIONS ALSO BECOME DISABLED WHEN THE SCREEN FREEZES. TESLA TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE REQUIRED A REPLACEMENT MCU AND ORDERED THE PART. HOWEVER, AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE ISSUE. INSTEAD THEY CLEARED THE DATA CACHE, TURNED OFF MY POWER SAVER MODE FUNCTION(THAT WAS NOT ACTIVE BUT WAS ENABLED) AND TOLD ME TO RESET THE CAR OR BRING IT BACK IN IF IT PERSISTS. THEY WERE UNWILLING TO DIAGNOSE FURTHER. I HAVE MAJOR SAFETY CONCERNS OPERATING A VEHICLE THAT RELIES ON ITS TECHNOLOGY TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. I'D LIKE THIS INVESTIGATED MORE CLOSELY. RYAN SMITH, THE SERVICE MANAGER AT TESLA REFUSED TO SHARE THE DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS, AND SAID THAT IF THE PART (MCU OR ITS COMPONENTS) FAILS THEY WILL REPLACE IT, BUT THAT IT HASN'T FAILED. I'M NOT COMFORTABLE WAITING FOR IT TO FAIL BEFORE THIS IS ADDRESSED. ATTACHED IS THE SERVICE RECEIPT WITH DETAILS OF WHAT WAS DONE. PLEASE ASSIST. THANK YOU.
MULTIPLE CENTER SCREEN FAILURES EXPERIENCED SINCE OCTOBER 2020. MOST NOTABLE HIGHWAY DRIVING INCIDENTS LISTED BELOW. 18NOV2020 WHILE DRIVING CENTER SCREEN BECAME UNRESPONSIVE. THE DRIVER SEAT HEATER WAS STUCK ON LEVEL 3. THE TURN SIGNAL SOUND CONTINUED AFTER THE TURN SIGNAL WAS TURNED OFF. CLIMATE CONTROLS COULDN'T BE TURNED OFF. NO RESPONSE TO RADIO SELECTIONS. 10 MINS LATER THE RADIO CAME ON AT A VERY LOUD VOLUME, BUT UNABLE TO REDUCE OR MUTE VOLUME. VOLUME MUTED AFTER 10 MINS. THE SCREEN REBOOTED, NO CELL SIGNAL. 19NOV2020 DRIVING, THE TOUCH SCREEN WENT BLACK. ATTEMPTED TO REBOOT USING THE SCROLL BUTTONS SEVERAL TIMES. IT DID NOT RESPOND. I REBOOTED THE DRIVER'S SCREEN, THEN THE CENTER SCREEN BEGAN TO REBOOT. THE TESLA SYMBOL APPEARED AND DISAPPEARED 4 TIMES OVER 5 MINUTES BEFORE THE CENTER SCREEN CAME ON. CAR UNABLE TO CONNECT TO CELL SERVICES FOR SEVERAL DAYS. 26NOV2020 DRIVING, ALL SYSTEMS APPEAR TO BE NORMAL ACCEPT THERE'S NO VOLUME, AND NO TURN SIGNALS. CENTER SCREEN WENT BLACK. CANNOT STOP VENTILATION. 4 HOURS AFTER PARKING CAR THE VENTILATION IS STILL ON, BUT THE DRIVER SCREEN SHOWS THAT THE VENTILATION IS OFF. CENTER SCREEN DOES NOT RESPOND TO REBOOT ATTEMPTS. BATTERY POWER GETTING LOW. FINALLY RECOVERED CENTER SCREEN AFTER 36 HOURS. 02DEC2020 CENTER SCREEN WENT BLACK AND DID NOT COME BACK ON. REQUEST FOR APPOINTMENT WITH TESLA MADE. EARLIEST APPOINTMENT IS 21DEC2020. HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO REBOOT CENTER SCREEN AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS. 12 DAYS LATER AND SCREEN IS STILL NOT RECOVERABLE. PREMATURE TIRE FAILURE
THE ONLY MANUAL FOR OPERATION OF MY CAR IS ON SCREEN. THE CAR COMPUTER WILL NOT LOAD THE SCREEN FOR THE MANUAL SO WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO ACCESS ANY SAFETY OR OPERATION MANUALS FOR MONTHS. I AGAIN TOOK MY CAR TO TESLA SERVICE THIS WEEK AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THEY HAVE NO FIX. THERE IS NO OTHER OPERATION MANUAL AND TO WAIT FOR A FIRMWARE UPDATE THEY MAY HELP BUT THEY ARE NOT SURE. THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE THE MCU. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER FULL WARRANTY. WE SUSPECT THE ISSUES WITH LOADING THE MANUAL IS RELATED TO FAILURE OF THE TOUCHSCREEN/MCU. WE HAVE HAD INCREASING EPISODES OF OUR SCREEN GOING DARK REQUIRING US TO PULL OVER AND NOT DRIVE UNTIL COMPUTER REBOOTS. WE ARE UNABLE TO USE OUR BACK UP CAMERA WHEN THE SCREEN IS BLACK. THE MAP FEATURES LOADS VERY SLOWLY. THIS IS A COMPLEX CAR AND WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO LOOK UP INFORMATION REGARDING SAFE OPERATION
I HAVE HAD THE SCREEN GO BLACK ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. IT TAKES MULTIPLE TRIES TO REBOOT IT. THE LOCAL DEALER SAID THAT I HAD TO KEEP TRACK OF WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND REPORT IT WITHIN 30 MINUTES TO THEM FOR DIAGNOSIS. I WAS HAVING THE SCREEN REPLACED FOR A DIFFERENT ISSUE (BUBBLES IN THE SCREEN) AND ASKED THEM IF THEY WOULD REPLACE IT WITH A NEWER SCREEN AND REPLACE THE MCU UNIT. THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD ONLY REPLACE THE SCREEN WITH A REFURBISHED UNIT THAT IS THE SAME AS THE ONE I HAVE. I HAD ANOTHER FAILURE YESTERDAY (11/30/2020) WHEN I WAS OUT OF TOWN. THE CAR WAS PARKED AND THE SCREEN WOULD NOT ENGAGE. I TRIED REBOOTING SEVERAL TIMES OVER AROUND 20 MINUTES. THE SYSTEM FINALLY REBOOTED. I SENT THIS IN TO THE LOCAL DEALER WITHIN 15 MINUTES. THEY HAD SAID THAT I NEEDED TO REPORT FAILURES WITHIN 30 MINUTES FROM THE OCCURRENCE . THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE OVER 12,000 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. WHEN THE SCREEN IS BLACK AND INOPERABLE THE BACKUP CAMERA IS NOT ENGAGED. YOU SHOULD REQUIRE THAT TESLA ISSUE RECALLS FOR MCU REPLACEMENTS AND SCREEN REPLACEMENTS WITH THE NEWER UPGRADED MODEL.
LEAVING A PARKING AREA BY BACKING UP AND THEN TURNING TO THE LEFT TO START TO DRIVE, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL STARTED A LOUD GRINDING NOISE, WENT UP AND DOWN, AND STOPPED. I WENT TO TAKE A LOOK AND FOUND THAT THE WHEEL WAS TOUCHING THE FRONT WHEEL WELL. HAD TO CALL TOWING SERVICE THAT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A NEARBY SERVICE CENTER. TESLA SERVICE CONFIRMED THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM/LINK WAS BROKEN. I REPLACED BOTH SIDES JUST TO BE SAFE. WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS PERFORMED PER SERVICE REQUIREMENT. $1003 TOTAL COST, NOT INCLUDING THE TOWING SERVICE COST.
ON 11/25/2020, AT APPROXIMATELY 12:00PM, WHILE IN LINE FOR THE DRIVE THROUGH CAR WASH OF A MOBIL GAS STATION (LOS SERRANOS COUNTRY CLUB DR), MY VEHICLE, A WHITE 2016 TESLA MODEL S, PARTIALLY TURNED OFF. I COULD NO LONGER STEER THE CAR NOR COULD I RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE SCREENS WERE COMPLETELY BLACK. I EXITED THE VEHICLE AND HAD TO WAIT SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO GET MY VEHICLE RESTARTED. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED (THOUGH I CANNOT REMEMBER THE EXACT DATES OF THE PREVIOUS INCIDENTS), WHERE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AFTER STOPPING AND I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE.
BACKING MY CAR OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, I HEARD A LOUD POP NOISE UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT AND AFTER THAT THE CAR MAKE LOUD NOISE LIKE METAL HITTING THE FLOOR EVERY TIME THE CAR GOES OVER THE BUMP. BROUGHT THE CAR TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER THE NEXT DAY AND TESLA SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT BOTH THE FRONT FORE LINKS AND SUSPENSIONS WERE BROKEN AND NEED TO BE REPLACED AND IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
WHILE DRIVING THE TOUCHSCREEN BECAME UNRESPONSIVE AND ALL FUNCTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TOUCHSCREEN INCLUDING TRAFFIC ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE REAR VIEW CAMERA WHILE IN REVERSE WERE INOPERABLE.
WE ORDERED AND BOUGHT OUR 2016 TESLA MODEL S BRAND NEW. WE KEEP OUR CARS AND TAKE CARE OF THEM - OUR 1996 FORD EXPLORER AND 2000 FORD F-250 STILL IN THE GARAGE RUNNING AS IF THEY WERE NEW. WE TAKE CARE OF OUT VEHICLES AND DRIVE THEM SO THEY LAST. OUR TESLA ONLY HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT AND IS ALWAYS STORED IN OUR ENCLOSED GARAGE. THE CAR IS NOT DRIVEN FOR THREE MONTHS AS WE GO BACK TO OUR COTTAGE IN THE MIDWEST FOR THE SUMMER. THIS YEAR (2020), BECAUSE OF COVID WE LEFT IN APRIL IN WHICH THE CAR SAT IN OUR GARAGE FOR FIVE MONTHS, NOT DRIVEN. AT OUR YEARLY CHECK UP, WE JUST DISCOVERED OUR REAR SHOCKS NEED REPLACING AT A COST OF $1,100.00 A SHOCK, 2,200 FOR THE PAIR. A CAR WITH 34,000 MILES, DRIVEN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, WITH MANY OF THE MILES ON THE FREEWAY AND NEEDING REAR SHOCKS AFTER THREE YEARS? THE CAR MAYBE FOUR YEARS OLD BUT IT HAS SAT THREE MONTHS EACH YEAR, WHICH EQUATES TO SITTING ALMOST A YEAR NOT BEING DRIVEN AT ALL. IT JUST HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY? THIS DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT.
VEHICLE MAIN COMPUTER LAGS, REBOOTS, AND COMES UP WITH A BLACK OR GARBLED SCREEN REGULARLY, INCLUDING WHILE DRIVING, ESPECIALLY WHEN A USB STICK IS INSERTED AND/OR THE DASHCAM FUNCTIONALITY IS IN USE. TESLA SERVICE INSISTS IT IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE (FOR OVER 1 YEAR NOW) AND HAS TO DATE REFUSED TO REPLACE ANY HARDWARE DESPITE SPENDING SEVERAL WEEKS OF TIME ATTEMPTING TO FIX THE ISSUES. THE CAR HAS HAD 25 OVER THE AIR FIRMWARE UPDATES AND HAS UNDERGONE TWO SEPARATE COMPLETE FACTORY RESETS SINCE MY INITIAL COMPLAINT TO TESLA IN JULY 2019. SYMPTOMS PREVENT AUDIO FOR TURN SIGNALS AND AUTOPILOT FROM WORKING PROPERLY. PREVENT BACKUP CAMERA FROM OPENING OR DISPLAYING PROPERLY. MAKE USING THE BUILT IN NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS DIFFICULT AND OFTEN DANGEROUS, CAUSING DRIVER DISTRACTION. WHEN THE MCU REBOOTS WHILE DRIVING IT TAKES NEARLY 15 MINUTES FOR THE NAV SYSTEM TO RESTART. MY TEGRA BASED MCU'S EMMC SHOWS ROUGHLY 2400 / 3000 AVG BLOCK ERASES, AND 81 RESERVED BLOCKS, NOT MEETING THE NEW THRESHOLDS SET BY TESLA ENGINEERING FOR REPLACEMENT (WHICH, FOR MY H8G2D APPRENTLY REQUIRE LESS THAN 65 RESVERED BLOCKS REMAINING). THE SYSTEM HAS REGULARLY SHOWN SQUASHFS ERRORS DUE TO CORRUPTED MEMORY.

The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated while driving at 65 MPH, the instrument panel temporarily blacked out while the GPS was in use. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the vehicle memory needed to be cleared. The memory was cleared however, the failure persisted. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000. Parts Distribution disconnect.
Car's central console locks up or goes blank while driving. This creates a driving hazard as drive must take his eyes off the road and try to restart the console. Tesla sent out a notice by mail in March that a recall was issued and that Tesla would replace the defective parts. Tesla sent a secondary notice in April. They will not take calls concerning this issue and have not provided an estimated repair date. No communication on this recall has been made by Tesla for 90 days.
Left suspension front fore link broken, damaged left front tire and wasn't driable.
MY VEHICLE HAD THE MCU FAILURE THAT IS WELL KNOWN. NO BLINKERS, NO AUTOPILOT, NO AC/HEATING, NO DEFOGGER ETC ETC. JUST BLANK SCREEN. SOUNDED LIKE THE RECENTLY ACKNOWLEDGE ISSUE WITH THE EMMC BUT TESLA REQUIRED ME TO PAY FOR AN UPGRADED MCU SAYING MY ISSUE WS NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY.
AFTER ABOUT 4.5 YEARS, I HAVE HAD TO REPAIR, AND THEN REPLACE THE MCU. ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE LCD SCREEN OF THE MCU (LEAKING LIQUIDS!) AS WELL AS THE LCD SCREEN OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL (ALSO LEAKING LIQUIDS!).
