SINCE I GOT THE CAR, THE IGNITION KEY DOES NOT GET IN PROPERLY AND SOMETIMES DOES NOT START THE CAR. THE MOVEMENT OF THE WHEEL HELPS SOMETIMES. THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN LEAKING ENGINE COVERS THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE STRUCTURE GETS RUSTY AND THERE IS PROBLEM WITH TRANSMISSION.
Frame has rotted out along with a lot more rust problems
MUFFLER FELL OFF GOT PARTS AND WHILE CHANGING MUFFLER FOUND OUT THAT MY FRAME IS RUSTED CLEAR THROUGH!! WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS I SEE A LOT OF OTHER OWNERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM THIS IS THE SECOND TOYOTA THAT I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO REALLY STARTING TO WONDER ABOUT THE BUYING TOYOTAS ANYMORE
THESE VEHICLES ARE NOTORIOUS FOR FRAME RUST/ROT. THE TACOMA OF THE SAME TIME PERIOD USED THE SAME FRAME AS THE 4RUNNER AND THE TACOMA HAS HAD A RECALL.
VEHICLE WAS IN FOR AIR CONDITIONING SERVICE AND DURING INSPECTION THE SERVICE TECH NOTED RUST ON THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE, DEEMED THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICES BY THE SAME TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SINCE 2002 AND HAS PERFORMED THE SAME INSPECTION DURING EACH VISIT, WHY WAS IT JUST IDENTIFIED DURING THIS VISIT AND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE? IS IT MORE PROFITABLE TO NOT IDENTIFY THE RUSH TO CUSTOMERS AND BECAUSE FIX THE RUST ISSUE OR TO SELL MORE EXPENSIVE CARS. THE DEALERSHIP DEEMED THAT THEY WOULD NOT FIX THE VEHICLE IN A COMPLAINT FILED THROUGH THE BBB BUT WOULD OFFER A CREDIT TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF A NEW VEHICLE!! THIS FURTHER SUPPORTS THE PREMISE THAT TOYOTA INTENTIONALLY OVERLOOKS SOME ISSUES IF THEY CAN REALIZE A GREATER VALUE. RUST IDENTIFIED IS ON THE DRIVER SIDE REAR FRAME. SERVICE TECH SAID ABOUT $7,500 TO REPAIR AT THE DEALERSHIP.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 TO 50 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT CENTER OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED AWAY BY STATE FARM. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT WAS INJURED AND RECEIVED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. WHILE IN PARK, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO THE GARAGE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, BUT FAILED TO AVOID THE CRASH. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 197,000.
THE UNFORTUNATE & COMMON FRAME RUST ISSUE THAT HAS PLAGUED THOUSANDS OF OWNERS OF THIS MODEL TOYOTA HAS NOW AFFECTED US. SAFETY CONCERN QUITE HIGH SINCE THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY IS SEVERELY COMPROMISED DUE TO A DESIGN FLAW AS NOTED COUNTLESS TIMES BY NUMEROUS 4RUNNER OWNERS. THIS ISSUE IS IDENTICAL TO THAT WITH TACOMA FRAMES OF THE SAME VINTAGE (WHICH ARE IDENTICAL IN DESIGN & BUILD TO THAT OF THIS MODEL STYLE 4RUNNER), WHICH WAS ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION. YET NO RECALL TO ASSIST 4RUNNER OWNERS HAS BEEN EXECUTED. IT APPEARS THAT TOYOTA IS ALLOWING VEHICLES TO BECOME PREMATURELY UNUSABLE & UNSAFE FOR CONSUMERS. TOYOTA HAS EITHER REPLACED SOME FRAMES ON SIMILAR VINTAGE 4RUNNERS OR HAS PROVIDED REIMBURSEMENT TO OWNERS SUFFERING FROM PREMATURE FAILURE... BUT ONLY VERY SPORADICALLY. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION & WAS TOLD THEIR IS NOTHING THAT THEY ARE GOING TO RECTIFY FOR US, YET THERE ARE OTHERS THAT DO RECEIVE A RESOLUTION OF SOME KIND. AS A PARAMEDIC I SEE FIRST HAND WHAT TRAGEDY OCCURS ON OUR ROADWAYS... AND THIS SITUATION WORRIES ME GREATLY WITH VEHICLES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT IT OCCUPANTS IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, BUT MAY NOW ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE UNNECESSARY HARM OR POSSIBLE DEATH OF IT'S OCCUPANTS/OPERATORS.
IGNITION KEY WILL NOT TURN WHEN TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM IS HAPPENING ON AND OFF SINCE ABOUT ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE EXITING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, THERE WAS AN OIL STAIN ON THE GROUND. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE OIL WAS LEAKING FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,528.
THE FRAME ON MY 4RUNNER WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION DUE TO RUST, WHICH I NEED TO REPAIR. THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE MUCH MILES ON IT AND SHOULD NOT RUST LIKE IT DID FROM THE INSIDE. THE RUST IS FROM THE INSIDE, WHICH MAKES IT VERY DANGEROUS TO HAVE ON THE ROAD ESPECIALLY IN STATES WHERE AN INSPECTION IS NOT REQUIRED. IT COULD EASILY GO UNNOTICED UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE, AND SOMEBODY COULD GET HURT OR KILLED WHEN THE FRAME FAILS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SEVERE CORROSION UNDERNEATH THE FRAME ADJACENT TO THE MUFFLER AND SUBFRAME. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRAME AND SUBFRAME HAD SEVERE CORROSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000. MA 10/22/2015
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HAVING MAINTENANCE PERFORMED, THE TECHNICIAN NOTIFIED THE CONTACT THAT THE FRAME WAS ROTTED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 204,507.
SUSPENSION MOUNT ON FRAME IN FRONT OF DRIVER'S REAR WHEEL BROKE OFF DUE TO UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF RUST. THIS IMPAIRED CONTROL OF VEHICLE AT SPEED, I ALMOST WENT IN DITCH AS REAR OF VEHICLE SWAYED BACK AND FORTH SEVERLY (LIKE ROCKING A BOAT) I HAD THIS REPAIRED TO CONTINUE DRIVING. AS OF 8-30-15 THE SAME PART ON OTHER SIDE IS ALMOST BROKEN OFF RESEARCH SHOWS THIS TO BE VERY COMMON,WHY IS IT NOT ADDRESSED?
THE BODY OF MY 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. RECENTLY, I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER WHO SUGGESTED THAT THE VEHICLE NO LONGER BE DRIVEN DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS ASSOCIATED WITH DRIVING THE 4RUNNER IN ITS CURRENT CONDITION. I WAS TOLD THE FRAME WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH, COMPROMISING THE INTEGRITY OF THE FRAME. *TR
ON ROUTINE CHECK AND INSPECTION, TOYOTA ARLINGTON AND TOYOTA SCHAUMBURG CALLED MY ATTENTION REGARDING A PREMATURE RUSTING ON THE UNDERBODY FRAME AND RESULTED IN A LINEAR HOLE BY THE REAR LEFT AND RIGHT PORTIONS OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISORS OF BOTH TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS MAY MAKE THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO OPERATE AND MAY RESULT TO UNCONTROLLED STABILITY DURING DRIVING. *TR
ECCESIVE RUST ON THE FRAME AND BODY MAKES IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE AS INTENDED
ON OCTOBER 11TH 2014, I WAS DRIVING MY 2001 4RUNNER, ON MY WAY TO WORK. HAD JUST TURNED OFF A ROAD WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 55. AS I HIT 35MPH, MY CAR COMES TO A JOLTING STOP WITH A LOUD BANG AND DRAG ON THE TIRES. THE CAR STILL RAN, BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE. I HAD TO FINISH WALKING TO MY JOB, AS I WAS CELLPHONE-LESS AT THE TIME. I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED HOME, MISSING AN ENTIRE DAY'S WORK, WHICH WAS A LOSS OF 120$. THE GUY WHO TOWED ME TOLD ME IT WAS DEFINITELY SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY REAR END. SO I HAD A FAMILY FRIEND WHO IS A RETIRED MECHANIC LOOK IT OVER TO SEE IF HE COULD SPOT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. FIRST THING NOTICED WAS MY EMERGENCY BREAK WAS ON AND FROZEN. THEY REMOVE IT, CLEAN IT, PUT IT BACK ON. I START THE CAR, GO TO MOVE IT AND THERES A CONTINUOUS LOUD BANG AND THE CAR AGAIN COMES TO THE STOP. THE EMERGENCY BREAK FROZE AGAIN. THEY ONCE AGAIN TAKE IT OFF, AND SO FAR IT HASN'T REFROZE. HOWEVER, MY CAR IS STILL MAKING THE LOUD BANGING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR END, WHICH THEY HAVE CONCLUDED IS COMING FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING UNIT. WHICH THEY FOUND A DECENT SIZED HOLE IN, WHICH IT APPEARS SOMEONE TRIED TO COVER WITH A YELLOW GLUE TYPE SUBSTANCE. I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR, AND AM NOW CARLESS. AS I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN, AND CANNOT AFFORD TO FIX A PROBLEM THAT CAN COST UP TO $3,000 TO FIX. LUCKILY I WAS ONLY GOING 35 MPH WHEN IT BROKE, AND THERE WAS NO ONE FOLLOWING BEHIND ME, OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN RE ENDED, AND HAD MORE TO FIX THAT I ALREADY DO. THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THE MODEL CAR, AND TOYOTA REALLY NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THE DIFFERENTIAL UNIT!!! IT'S FAIRLY DANGEROUS. I LOVED THIS CAR BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. BUT NOW IT'S USELESS TIL I CAN AFFORD THIS FIX. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE TRACTION CONTROL BECAME DISABLED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PROGRAMMING OF THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE RECONFIGURED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
VEHICLE FRAME IS RUSTING TO THE POINT OF PERFORATION. I DISCOVERED TODAY TWO HOLES, ONE ON EACH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE, INNER FRAME RAILS JUST BEHIND THE REAR CROSSMEMBER. MY CONCERN IS IT MAY BE ROTTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. IS THE MANUFACTURER GOING TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THESE FRAMES AS THEY HAVE DONE ON TACOMAS AND TUNDRAS? THIS CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OTHERWISE AND I HAD PLANNED TO DRIVE IT FOR MUCH LONGER DUE TO ITS HANDLING AND SAFETY. *TR
FRAME RUST ISSUES. MY FRAME HAS BEEN RUSTING AWAY FOR THE ENTIRE TIME I'VE OWNED IT, AND IT ISN'T GETTING ANY BETTER. THE PASSENGER INSIDE FRAME RAIL IS RUSTED FROM THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM MOUNT TO THE CROSS MEMBER MOUNT MIDWAY DOWN THE FRAME. THE DRIVER INSIDE FRAME RAIL IS RUSTED AT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MOUNT AS WELL, AND SLIGHTLY IN FRONT OF IT. WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE I NOTICED A SLIGHT PIT, AND DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT. OVER THE NEXT YEAR THAT PIT GOT BIGGER UNTIL THERE WAS A LARGE OPENING THAT YOU COULD FIT TWO HANDS INSIDE OF.
FRAME HAS RUSTED THROUGH THE FRAME RAILS IN MULTIPLE AREAS. ISSUE WAS NOT DISCLOSED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED 01/13/2015, YET I FOUND A REPAIR ORDER FROM 09/24/2014 THAT STATED THERE WERE RUST HOLES IN THE FRAME. DEALER IS CURRENTLY INSPECTING THE EXTENT OF THE FRAME DAMAGE AND WILL RECOMMEND A RESOLUTION. I HAVE SEVERAL PHOTOS, BUT CURRENTLY DO NOT HAVE THEM HANDY.
THE 4RUNNER HAS DEVELOPED SURFACE RUST ON THE FRAME UNDERNEATH THE CAR. THE RUST IS ALSO APPARENT ON SUSPENSION COMPONENTS AND BRAKES. *TR
I WAS GOING OVER A RAIL RD CROSSING, AND THERE WAS A LOUD BANG AND KNOCKING AFTER. BROUGHT IT TO A SHOP, AND THEY SAID THAT MY DRIVER SIDE UPPER, REAR SHOCK WENT THROUGH MY SHOCK MOUNT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING CORRODED AND CAUSED FLUID TO LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
THE CHASIS RUSTS AND IS DAMAGED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE ABOUT 18 INCHES.
THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH TOYOTA FRAMES. THE FRAMES ON THE 3RD GENERATION 4RUNNER, AND THE EQUIVALENT FRAME ON THE TOYOTA TACOMA ARE PRONE TO ROTTING. TOYOTA STEPPED UP TO REPLACE THE TACOMA FRAMES SINCE THEY WERE CRACKING IN HALF. ALTHOUGH, THE 4RUNNERS ARE SUFFERING FROM THE EXACT SAME ISSUES AND TOYOTA IS DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT. I'VE RECENTLY HAD TO REMOVE A 2" X 24" SECTION OF FRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE THAT WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. THE FRAME ROT IS OCCURRING FROM THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM MOUNT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR FORWARD UNTIL THE CROSS MEMBER.
TOOK VEHICLE TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR SAFETY AND MECHANICAL INSPECTION AFTER PURCHASING USED; MECHANIC NOTES THAT FRAME IS RUSTED THROUGH ON PASSENGER SIDE, NEAR LOWER TRAILING ARM BRACKET AND ON DRIVERS SIDE NEAR FUEL TANK SKID PLATE. DAMAGE APPEARS TO HAVE ORIGINATED ON THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME AND HAS EATEN ITS WAY TO THE OUTSIDE. MECHANIC ADVISED THAT VEHICLE MAY NOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE, NO RECALL BY TOYOTA ON 4RUNNERS DESPITE SIMILAR ISSUES WITH SAME YEAR TACOMA. *TR
VEHICLE FAILED STATE INSPECTION DUE TO RUSTED FRAME. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF RUST ON THE BUMPERS (WHICH IS ALSO A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS GENERATION 4RUNNER) THE REST OF THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE AND MECHANICALLY VERY RELIABLE. INSPECTION STATION SUGGESTED THAT I CONTACT TOYOTA SINCE THEY WERE AWARE OF RECALLS FOR RUSTED FRAMES ON OTHER TOYOTA TRUCKS (TACOMA, SEQUOIA FOR EXAMPLE.) TOYOTA STATED THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR 4RUNNERS BUT OFFERED A $500 CUSTOMER LOYALTY REBATE IF I WERE TO PURCHASE A NEW OR CERTIFIED USED TOYOTA VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE RUSTED FRAME PROBLEM WOULD ONLY BE IDENTIFIED BY A VERY THOROUGH INSPECTION OF THE UNDERBODY OF THE TRUCK. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHER 4RUNNERS OF THIS GENERATION THAT ARE ON THE ROAD WITH AN UNDIAGNOSED RUSTED FRAME PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DURING AN INSPECTION SHE WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FRAME COMPLETELY CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN CONFIRMED THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 161,213.
MY 4 RUNNER SHAKES WHILE ON FREEWAY GOING PASSED SPEED LIMIT OF 50MPH IT FEELS LIKE I CAN TIP OVER IF GOING TO FAST. SOME OF THE ELECTRICAL THINGS WORK THEN NOT WORK. IT IS MOSTLY THE SHAKING BACK AND FORTH. I HAVE TO HOLD FIRMLY TO GET IT UNDER CONTROL SOMEWHAT. PEOPLE NOTICE IT WHEN DRIVING BEHIND ME. I AM SCARED FOR MY CHILDREN AND I.
VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION IN MAY 2014 DUE TO EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST AND PERFORATION. THE FRAME WAS RUSTED SO BADLY THAT THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT NEW ROCHELLE TOYOTA ADVISED "DUE TO EXCESSIVE FRAME PERFORATION DO NOT LET CUSTOMER DRIVE VEHICLE." *TR
WHEN DRIVING AT 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE VIBRATES ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE CONSTANTLY TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR OVER TWO YEARS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY ALWAYS TOLD ME THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. TODAY (5/10/14), THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP PUT THE TRUCK ON A RACK AND RAN THE CAR AT 45 MPH AND THERE WAS VISIBLE VIBRATION COMING FROM THE DRIVE SHAFT AND A LOUD NOISE THAT I COULD NEVER HEAR FROM WITHIN THE VEHICLE. ALL THIS TIME, I HAVE BEEN DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT I WAS UNAWARE COULD HAVE SNAPPED APART. THE SOUND CANNOT BE HEARD IN THE CABIN, SO I COULD NOT EVEN REPORT THAT AS A PROBLEM UNTIL TODAY. I PURCHASED THREE SETS OF NEW TIRES, HAD SHOCKS AND STRUTS REPLACED, AND BRAKE PADS TO NO AVAIL. FINALLY, AFTER SEARCHING THE WEB YESTERDAY, I REALIZED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL. I'M NOT SURE IF THIS PROBLEM HAS CAUSED INJURY TO OTHERS, BUT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. THIS COULD CAUSE A POTENTIALLY FATAL ACCIDENT IF THAT SHAFT BREAKS. I READ THAT FOR SIMILAR MODELS (TOYOTA AND LEXUS), THE MANUFACTURER REPLACED THE PARTS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT NOTHING FOR THE 4RUNNER. THE DEALERSHIP IS CHARGING OVER $700 FOR THIS REPAIR. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHEN HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS SEVERELY CORRODED AND FRACTURED. THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE RUBBER ABOVE THREAD AND IN THE RIGGS ON THE TIRE I WAS TOLD BY TWO TIRE REPAIR STORE (GOODYEAR BEING THE SECOND ) COULD NOT BE REPAIRED WHERE LOCATED. ON THE10TH OF MARCH MY TIRE WAS FLAT DOWN TO THE RIM AND DURING THE ICE BLACK OUT (NO HEAT FOR 3 DAYS) NO CAR TO GO ANYWHERE TO GET OUT OF THE COLD THEN BEING TOLD BY GOODYEAR / DEALER THEY COULD NOT EXCHANGE OR REBATE ANYTHING ON A NEW TIRE. I HAVE THREE MORE TIRES THAT I AM WORRIED ABOUT HAVING TOO REPLACED AND GOOD YEAR REFUSES TO DO RECALL OR COMPENSATE MYSELF OR OTHERS FOR CLEARLY DEFECTIVE TIRES ! WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO GET A STATE INSPECTION AT MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, THE MECHANIC FOUND A RUST HOLE ON MY FRAME . IT IS LOCATED ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE RIGHT BESIDE THE MUFFLER. THIS VEHICLE IS SERVICED REGULARLY AT THIS DEALERSHIP SINCE IT WAS NEW. THERE ARE FORUMS ON THE INTERNET THAT HAVE MANY PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THAT I DO. IF THESE FRAMES ARE THIS INFERIOR THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED JUST LIKE THE TACOMA AND TUNDRA. *TR

TECHNICIAN POINTED OUT ROT HAS EATEN THROUGH FRAME ON BOTH SIDES AT REAR CONTROL ARM BRACKET. SPOKE WITH OTHER EARLY 2000'S 4RUNNER OWNERS WHO ALL HAVE ROT IN SAME PLACES. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES HAVE BEEN USED ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE I PURCHASED IT. FRAME HAS NO DRAINAGE HOLES FORWARD OF RUST HOLES IN WHEEL WELLS. CONCERNED FOR OTHER 4RUNNER OWNERS WHO ARE UNAWARE OF RUST SPOTS BY CONTROL ARM BRACKETS. THE MANUFACTURE ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS A CANADIAN VEHICLE THEREFORE IT COULD NOT BE REPAIRED IN THE UNITED STATES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY IN 2001 TOYOTA 4-RUNNER GOING ABOUT 60 AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE REAR END/TIRES LOCKED UP AND GOT IT TO THE SIDE OF HIGHWAY BARELY AND THEN IT STARTED SMOKING REALLY BAD. VERY LUCKY THAT IT DIDN'T CAUSE A WRECK OR NO ONE GOT HURT. CAN'T DRIVE IT OR NOTHING, MAKES A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE IN THE REAR END AND ALSO WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY ON INSIDE THE VEHICLE ALL LIGHTS ARE ON AND ITS MAKING A TERRIBLE BUZZING NOISE. SO HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AND THAT COST ME ALSO AND I NEED THE WHOLE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND THAT'S A LOT OF MONEY. I'VE SEEN OTHER PROBLEMS/COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED TO MINE. I REALLY THINK SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT, TOYOTA SHOULD BE FIXING THE PROBLEM AND WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. HOPEFULLY SOMETHING GETS DONE ABOUT THIS. *TR
THE BACK OF THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING STARTED LEAKING ABOUT ONE DROP PER SECOND. THE VEHICLE HAS 113,800 MILES. WE BOUGHT THE CAR WITH ABOUT 20,000 MILES. IT HAS RECEIVED THE RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE. THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK IS SEVERE CORROSION THAT HAS REMOVED MUCH OF THE STRUCTURAL METAL OF THE DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING. THE LEAK IS COMING THROUGH SEVERAL CRACKS THAT HAVE PASSED THROUGH THE REMAINING METAL. THE ONLY AVAILABLE REPAIR IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE REAR AXLE HOUSING TO THE TUNE OF BETWEEN $2000 AND $3000. THIS TYPE OF CORROSION IS UNUSUAL. I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THIS SORT OF MALFUNCTION IN NEARLY 50 YEARS OF DRIVING. *TR

VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM LOCAL DEAL (LYNCH TOYOTA, MANCHESTER CT) AND IS ONE OWNER GARAGED AND MAINTAINED. CONTACTED TOYOTA AND LOCAL DEALER. BOTH UNWILLING TO TAKE ANY ACTION. THE FRAME HAS SUFFERED SERIOUS RUST THROUGH ALSO DESCRIBED AS "FRAME ROT" IN POSTINGS ON LINE OF TOYOTA 4-RUNNER PROBLEMS. THIS RUST THROUGH HAS MADE THE VEHICLE UNSAFE AND CURRENTLY UNUSABLE. THE RUST WAS DISCOVERED WHEN THE ENTIRE REAR AXLE WAS REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. TOYOTA WOULD NOT ALLOW THAT THEY WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR FAULTY MANUFACTURING OF THE REAR AXLE EITHER WHICH WAS YET ANOTHER SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
MY FUSE FOR MY WINDOWS BLEW, THEN WE FOUND OUT THAT MY WIRING HARNESS IN THE BACKSEAT HAD BURNED UP. FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS WAS ALSO FRIED. THREE DIFFERENT MECHANICS DETERMINED THAT THE CAUSE WAS A MALFUNCTION OF THE AIRBAG WIRING. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF WEAR AND TEAR OR OUTSIDE INFLUENCE. THE AIRBAGS CREATED THE PROBLEM, ARE NOW COMPROMISED AND ARE COMPLETELY UNSAFE. I CAN NO LONGER DRIVE THE CAR AND EVEN IF REPAIRED, THE AIRBAGS ARE NOW COMPROMISED FOREVER RENDERING THE CAR USELESS. TOYOTA DENIES ANY RESPONSIBILITY. THEY CLAIM THAT THE CAR IS TOO OLD TO BE THEIR PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS ATTENTION SO THAT NOBODY ELSE HAS THE SAME EXPERIENCE OR WORSE, IS KILLED DUE TO AIRBAGS DEPLOYING AT WILL. *TR
