CROSS MEMBER UNDER RADIATOR THAT THE TOW HITCHES CONNECT TO ARE COMPLETELY RUSTING OUT AND FALLING APART AS WELL AS THE SKID PLATE NOTICED THIS HOOKING UP ROPES TO SECURE MY KAYAKS. THE PAINT ON THE TIRE RIMS ARE PEALING AND CORRODING
I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER THAT HAS A REALLY BAD RUST PROBLEM AROUND THE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT. IT HAS 145000 MILES AND IT'S BEEN GARAGE KEPT MOST OF IT LIFE ..
WELL MAINTAINED VEHICLE FAILED NH STATE SAFETY INSPECTION BASED ON SIGNIFICANT FRAME RUST. RUST POINTS AROUND RADIATOR SUPPORT MOUNTS, AND PASSENGER SIDE RAIL, NEAR MUFFLER MOUNT, AND REAR SUSPENSION MOUNT POINT. WITH DAMAGE, CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. TOYOTA STATES NO RESOLUTION OPTION EXISTS. SIMILAR YEAR TACOMAS FRAMES ARE BEING REPLACED WITH IDENTICAL DAMAGE.
LETTER FROM CONGRESSMAN FITZPATRICK ON BEHALF OF CONSTITUENT RE RUST ON HER 2004 TOYOTA 4-RUNNER. SHE IS LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION TO THIS PREDICAMENT IN ORDER THAT HER CAR MAY PASS INSPECTION. *SMD THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED BY HER MECHANIC, RUST WAS FOUND ON THE VEHICLE. *JB
DRIVING DOWN ROAD @40 MPH, ALL OF A SUDDEN FELT LIKE DRIVING ICE. IMMEDIATELY LET OFF GAS PEDAL TO REMAIN IN CONTROL OF VEHICLE. ABOVE 35 MPH, CAN BARELY STAY IN CONTROL. THANKFULLY CLOSE TO HOME, CRAWLED HOME UNDER 25 MPH. THANK GOD I WASN'T DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY @ 70MPH. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS I CERTAINLY DON'T THINK I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STAY IN CONTROL, & WOULD HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF A MAJOR POSSIBLY DEADLY ACCIDENT. I BROUGHT IT TO A REPUTABLE REPAIR SHOP, & WAS TOLD THE REAR LEFT CONTROL ARM & BRACKET ROTTED OFF THE FRAME. TOLD ME IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE & UNREPAIRABLE, BECAUSE THE FRAME IS TOO ROTTED FROM RUST. HE ALSO TOLD ME IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. IT IS THE ONLY VEHICLE I OWN, I NEED TO DRIVE TO WORK TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY. I AM LEFT WITH VEHICLE THAT I CAN'T DRIVE OR REPAIR. YESTERDAY KELLY'S BOOK VALUE WAS $12, 000. TODAY ITS VALUE IS 0. TOYOTA TOLD ME THERE IS NO RECALL SO ITS MY PROBLEM. I FEEL BETRAYED! I'VE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT ROTTED TOYOTA 4RUNNER FRAMES. THERE'S A RECALL ON 04 TUNDRA'S FOR ROTTED FRAMES, WHICH WERE MANUFACTURED WITH THE SAME METAL & TECHNIQUE'S AS THE 4RUNNER. SO WHY NO RECALL FOR 4RUNNER'S? NOT ENOUGH COMPLAINTS! TOYOTA SELLS MANY MORE TRUCKS THAN SUV'S IN USA. I CAN'T BELIEVE TOYOTA & THE NHTSA CAN & WILL ALLOW THESE UNSAFE VEHICLE'S TO DRIVE THROUGH OUR NEIGHBORHOODS KNOWING THE RISK THEY POSE TO INNOCENT PEOPLE. I GAVE TOYOTA ALOT OF MY HARD EARNED MONEY ON WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A QUALITY VEHICLE. I CHECKED OUT MY FRAME TODAY, & CAN EASILY PUT MY FINGER THRU FRAME IN MANY PLACES. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ALLOW TOYOTA TO LEAVE ITS CUSTOMERS LEFT WITH A WORTHLESS VEHICLE WITHOUT ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIER INFERIOR PRODUCT. I URGED THE NHTSA TO OPEN A LARGE SCALE INVESTIGATION INTO THE QUALITY OR LACK THERE OFF IN 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER FRAMES. I AM A HARD WORKING HONEST AMERICAN, I FEEL WRONGED BY TOYOTA! ITS NOT RIGHT!!

PREMATURE HEAVY RUSTING ON FRAME RAILS AND CROSSMEMBERS
THE ENTIRE FRONT FRAME ON MY 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER ROTTED WITHIN THE LAST YEAR. IT WAS DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE AFTER GOING IN FOR A ROUTINE INSPECTION. SHAMEFUL SINCE THE BODY WAS IN GOOD CONDITION AND THE CAR RAN GREAT. TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THESE FRAMES. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO GET RID OF IT.
2004 4 RUNNER SPORT, FRAME RUSTING OUT EVERYWHERE, N OW FRONT CROSS MEMBER UNDER THE RADIATOR IS COMPLETLY RUSTED THRU. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO GET AN INSPECTION STICKER. THE MECHANIC OBSERVED RUST AND HOLES ON THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
I WAS NOTIFIED IN APRIL 2016 THAT MY CURTAIN AIRBAGS MAY NEED A NEW MODULE DUE TO THE UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THESE AIR BAGS. SINCE THEN, I HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM THE DEALER. I THINK TOYOTA IS DRAGGING THEIR FEET IN SUPPLYING THE DEALERS WITH THE REPLACEMENT MODULE.
LOOKS LIKE THE FRAN AROUND AND IN FRONT OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION IS RUSTING IN TWO
WHILE HAVING THE TIRES REPLACED, THE MECHANICS WERE UNABLE TO LOWER THE SPARE TIRE. AFTER CALLING FOR BACKUP THE MECHANICS WERE ABLE TO CUT THE TIRE FROM THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS BEFORE A TRIP TO ATLANTIC CITY, SO I HAD TOYOTA REPLACE THE HOIST AT MY COST TO REPAIR (UNWARE OF THE RUST AND FRAME ISSUES). THE 4RUNNER WAS APPROXIMATELY 12 YEARS OLD WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED. I DO NOT KNOW HOW LONG THE HOIST WAS BAD BEFORE THAT DATE BECAUSE I NEVER HAD TO USE THE HOIST. THE HOIST WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED. I'M REPORTING THIS NOW SO THAT OTHER OWNERS CAN CHECK THEIR HOIST AND FRAMES. THE FRAMES ARE DANGEROUS (RUSTED AND FALLING APART) AND WILL EVENTUALLY BE THE CAUSE OF SOMEONE'S ACCIDENT AND POTENTIAL DEATH. I'VE CONTACTED MY STATE SENATOR TO LOOK INTO THE FRAME INVESTIGATION AND WHY IT IS TAKING SO LONG. HOPEFULLY, I WILL HEAR BACK SOON. HAVE SEEN EXTREME RUST ON MY FRAME, SO BAD I CAN PICK OFF CHUNKS WITH MY HAND. I KNOW TOYOTA IS IN DENIAL BUT WHAT IS REALLY BEING DONE OVER THIS ISSUE.
BLOWN HEAD GASKET WITH 130,000 MILES. BLOWN NEAR THE NUMBER 6 CYLINDER (LIKE EVERYONE ELSE). COST $3700 FOR REPAIRS.
FRAME RUST - FRAME REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM HAS FULLY RUSTED THROUGH, CREATING A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION WHERE VEHICLE CONTROL CAN BE LOST AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR FATALITY. TOYOTA DEALER WOULD NOT REPLACE OR REPAIR FRAME DUE TO VEHICLE OUT OF WARRANTY. FOUND OUT RUST AFTER REPLACING SHOCKS. WELDED EXTRA MATERIAL AND PAINTED AS AN INTERIM ACTION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BIG ISLAND TOYOTA KAILUA-KONA (808-329-8517, LOCATED AT 74-5504 KAIWI ST, KAILUA, HI 96740) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WAS ABOVE NORMAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120,000. *BF*JB
THESE VEHICLES ARE PLAGUED BY RUST ON THE FRAME AND COMPONENTS ATTACHED TO THE FRAMES. THERE IS THE POTENTIAL THAT THIS CAN CAUSE A HAZARD DUE TO FAILURE OF CRITICAL COMPONENTS OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ISSUE EFFECTS MULTIPLE VEHICLES AND IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. FRAMES DEGRADE JUST LIKE THE ONES ON THE TACOMA YET NO ACTION IS BEING TAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF 4RUNNER OWNERS.
THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY RUSTED TO THE POINT WHERE IT WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION.
I HAVE A 2004 4RUNNER WHICH IS METICULOUSLY KEPT. THE ENTIRE FRONT FRAME WHICH SUPPORTS THE RADIATOR HAD TO BE CUT OUT AND REPLACED. THERE WHERE ALSO MULTIPLE SPOTS ON THE FRAME RAIL WHERE STEEL PLATES HAD TO BE WELDED ON FOR IT TO PASS INSPECTION. I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH COMPLAINTS FOR ANYTHING TO BE DONE ABOUT THE FRAME. HOWEVER, ANYONE I TALK TO, PERSONAL OR AT SHOPS, IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT OR WORSE!
I HAVE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH OUR 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. IT STARTED ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO WHEN THE MARYLAND STATE EMMISSION TEST FACILITY PLUGGED INTO MY ODBI2 PORT. ALL THE DASH LIGHTS WERE ON AND I WENT IN TO THE OFFICE AND COMPLAINED. I FILED A FORM WITH EMISSIONS. I WORK OUT OF TOWN, MY WIFE IS A TEACHER AND WE HAVE TWO SMALL KIDS. GOING TO THE DEALER WAS NOT AN OPTION UNTIL SCHOOL WAS OUR. IN THE MEAN TIME THE TRUCK DROVE FINE OTHER THAN NO FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AND THE TIRES SPINNING IF YOU HIT THE PEDDLE TO HARD (NO TRACTION CONTROL OR STABILITY CONTROL. TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER OVER THE SUMMER AND THEY HAD TO RESET THE VALUES FOR $110.00 THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE WOULD NO LONGER ENGAGE. TOYOTA DEALER SAID ALL THE VALUES BEING ERASED WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THAT YEAR AND MVA CHEEP SCANNERS. MARYLAND SAID THEY CALLED TOYOTA AND NO ONE HAD EVER HAD THAT PROBLEM. HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN AGAIN LAST EMISSION TEST. BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE NO LONGER FUNCTIONS. THE ACTUATOR DOESN'T ENGAGE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. THIS WAS APPARENT WHEN MY WIFE LOST CONTROL AND NEARLY FLIPPED THE TRICK OVER AFTER PICKING UP THE KIDS IN A SNOW STORM. I CLIMBED UNDER THE TRUCK IN THE SNOW AND PULLED THE COVER OFF THE ACTUATOR, PULLED OUT THE PLASTIC GEARS AND MANUALLY SHIFTED IT INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE TO GET IT HOME. THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM WAS ALWAYS USED AT LEAST EVERY MONTH UNTIL THE EMISSION TEST PROBLEMS JUST TO KEEP IT LUBERICATED. THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE OR LACK THERE OF, COULD HAVE CAUSED DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY TO MY WIFE AND KIDS. THIS ACTUATOR IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM, IF THEY CAN'T DESIGN A ACTUATOR THAT OPERATES WHEN YOU NEED FOUR WHEEL DRIVE, ESPECIALLY IN AN EMERGENCY THAN GO BACK TO THE OLD STICK AND LINKAGE. 55 PEOPLE DIED IN THE BLIZZARD OF 2016 AND THERE COULD HAVE BEEN 3 MORE JUST BECAUSE OF A DESIGN FLAW! P.S. MY WIFE AND I BOUGHT IT NEW, NEVER OFF ROAD!

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
THE BRAKE GET HARD AND ABS, BRAKE VSC AND TRAC SIGN CAME ON WITH ALERT WHISTLE WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN THE NEIGHBOTHOOD LUCKILY.. MECHANIC SAID IT IS RARE TO GO BAD BUT IT IS BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY GOES BAD. IS THIS THE SAME ISSUE AS PRIUS?
THERE IS EXCESSIVE RUST/CORROSION ON THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK. THE SKID PLATES COMPLETELY RUSTED OFF THE TRUCK IN 2010. THE TRANSMISSION LINES HAVE CORRODED TO THE POINT THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE ENGINE OIL COOLER AND RADIATOR SUPPORTS HAVE RUSTED THROUGH. THE EXHAUST RUSTED OFF THE TRUCK IN 2010 AS WELL. CURRENTLY THERE IS EXTENSIVE CORROSION ON THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK AND THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THESE ISSUES APPEARED IN 2010 AND I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING THEM EVER SINCE. MECHANICALLY THE TRUCK RUNS GREAT, NEVER A PROBLEM, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE'S FRAME IS DISINTEGRATING DUE TO CORROSION.

VEHICLE HAS 129,881 MILES. SEVERE RUST THROUGH OF FRAME UNDERSIDE. HAD PLATED & WELDED. NEW RUST THROUGH HOLES APPEARED WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF PREVIOUS WELD ON SAME FRAME STRUCTURE BUT IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS POSING IMMINENT RUST THROUGH FAILURE IN CENTER OF VEHICLE. CANNOT PASS SAFETY INSPECTION.

SLIGHT OVER HEATING IF IDLING ... ALL POINTS NOW LEAD TO BLOWN HEAD GASKET IN WHICH I READ MORE AND MORE AND COMMON WITH 04 V6S.
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH ON A CITY STREET, WITH CHILDREN IN VEHICLE, BREAKS FAILED AND LOUD CABIN ALARM SOUND AND ABS, VSC AND TRAC DASH LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAD TO PULL INTO A GRASSY SWALE, APPLY EMERGENCY BREAK AND DOWN SHIFT IN ORDER TO STOP AND AVOID CRASHING INTO TRAFFIC. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. ABS PUMP BREAK MASTER CYLINDER WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $3,300. I HAVE READ MANY POSTS IN BLOGS FROM TOYOTA OWNERS WITH SIMILAR ISSUE, AND SOME THAT CAUSED ACCIDENTS. I HAD JUST COME OFF THE HIGHWAY, SO THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT JUST MINUTES EARLIER. MERITS AN INVESTIGATION.
I have taken my car to Mountain states Toyota as well as corwin toyota for a tripped light it has to do with vehicle stability system it trips leaving the vehicle stability option not usable. I have told both dealers not to just reset the code however this is what’s happening and they don’t seem to know why it’s doing this. we have repaired the knock sensors and speed sensors. It feels unsafe driving when this trips when road conditions call for all wheel drive. the technician can’t figure it out why. their only solution is to keep resetting. This is not the option I want I need it repaired and they don’t seem to want to do it or figure out and give us options on repair.
I HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED INFORMATION ON THE INTERIM G1C. THIS IS ALSO ABOUT THE FRAME ON MY VEHICLE WHICH IS RUSTED VERY BAD. THE REAR PASSENGER ARM MOUNT HAS ALREADY BROKEN. THERE ARE ALSO HOLES IN THE TRAVE AND THE LONG PIECES OF METAL ON THE FRAME. THE SKID PLATES ARE ALSO RUSTED. ALSO THE TOW RING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IS GETTING READY TO SNAP. I HAVE BEEN LEARNING MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH SOME TOYOTA VEHICLES. I AM AFRAID THAT I AM RIDING IN A VERY DANGEROUS VEHICLE. FRAME HAS RUST HOLES IN FRONT CROSS MEMBER THAT RUNS UNDER RADIATOR. TOW HOOK IS UNUSABLE. PROFESSIONAL INSPECTION OF ENTIRE FRAME INDICATED THAT FRAME HAS NUMEROUS RUST SPOTS THAT ARE UNSAFE. ALL FRAME ATTACHED UNDERCARRIAGE COMPONENTS ARE SO RUSTED THAT REMOVAL OF PARTS IS IS IMPOSSIBLE. CANNOT FIND ANY WELDING SHOPS THAT ARE WILLING TO WELD THE FRAME TO KEEP IT FROM TOTAL FAILURE IN THE FUTURE. THE BODY PANELS ARE RUST FREE. I BELIEVE THE VEHICLE'S FRAME SHOULD HAVE LASTED A LOT LONGER THAN 11 YEARS . DEALERSHIP WILL NOT REPLACE OR WARRANTY THE EXCESSIVE RUST PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA.

THE FRAME OF MY 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER HAS CONSIDERABLE RUST THAT EXCEEDS NORMAL WEAR AND AGE. CONSIDERING THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH THE TACOMA OF THE SAME YEAR IT SEEMS PRUDENT AND RESPONSIBLE FOR TOYOTA TO STAND BY THEIR RELIABILITY SLOGAN AND REMEDY THIS SITUATION, AS THERE ARE MANY OTHERS IN THE SAME CONDITION AS MINE.
VEHICLE ENGINE LIGHT AND OTHER LIGHTS CAME ON, TOOK TO DEALER AND TOLD ME CODE WAS PO306 CODE WAS DIAGNOSED STATING THERE IS A MISFIRE IN CYLINDER #6 RESULTING IN A HEAD GASKET PROBLEM OF COOLANT ENTERING THE CYLINDER & IT WOULD COST ME 3000 TO 5000 DOLLARS TO FIX. EVERY TIME I START CAR IN MORNING THE CAR HAS A ROUGH SHACKING START UNTIL WARMED UP, MY CAR HAS 135000 MILES & REVIEWING ONLINE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE AROUND OR AFTER 120000 MILES AND THAT THEIR ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE I AM HAVING. PLEASE CAN ONE GET HELP IN GETTING TOYOTA ACCOUNTABLE FOR A PROBLEM THEY SURELY KNOW ABOUT AS WELL AS BECAUSE I AM NOT THE FIRST AND PROBABLY NOT THE LAST ON COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE & THAT THIS IS NOT A NORMAL PROBLEM FOR THIS ENGINE IT IS A MANUFACTURES DEFECT
MY 2004 4RUNNER WITH $144K MILES WAS RECENTLY DISCOVERED TO HAVE A SIX INCH HOLE IN THE FRAME DUE TO RUST, AND BASED ON MD SAFETY INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS, THIS VEHICLE PRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD AND CAN NOT BE REGISTERED. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THE REPAIR WOULD BE A COMPLETE FRAME REPLACED AT A COST OF $18-20K. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY VEHICLE METICULOUSLY THROUGHOUT IT'S LIFE WITH MOSTLY DEALERSHIP MAINTENANCE AND AT NO TIME DID ANY MECHANIC OR SERVICE DEPARTMENT MENTION EXCESSIVE RUST OR HOLES IN THE FRAME. I SPOKE TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE RECALL PROGRAMS FOR TACOMA AND SEQUOIA VEHICLES DUE TO SIMILAR FRAME RUSTING PROBLEMS, THEY ARE UNWILLING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ANY FLAW EXISTS WITH EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE 4RUNNER MODELS. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT TOYOTA HAS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM RELATED TO THIS GENERATION OF 4RUNNERS, AND SINCE THEY ARE UNWILLING TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM EXISTS, IT APPEARS THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT REQUIRES GOVERNMENTAL/NHTSA INTERVENTION. I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW MANY OTHER 4RUNNERS ARE ON THE ROAD WITH SIMILAR COMPROMISED FRAMES, AND I WOULD HATE TO SEE AN ACCIDENT DUE TO FRAME FAILURE AT HIGH SPEED OR DURING TIGHT CORNERING. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE TO PREVENT ANY INADVERTENT INJURY OR DEATH.
THE OUTSIDE OF MY 4RUNNER IS RUST FREE. THE FRAME HOWEVER HAS EXTENSIVE RUST ISSUES. I HAVE HAD TO HAVE SECTIONS CUT OUT AND REWELDED BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION. THE STEERING COLUMN RUSTED OUT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE STEERING STOPPED RESPONDING.
THIS 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER HAD 145000 MILES ON IT WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, ALONG WITH VSC AND VSC TRAC LIGHTS. ENGINE RAN ROUGH/RUMBLED FOR FEW SECONDS AFTER EACH START, THEN THE RUMBLING WOULD STOP. AT AUTOZONE THEY DIAGNOSED A P0306 ERROR CODE. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO SCANNED CODE # 0306 #6 CYLINDER MISFIRE. FURTHER TESTING SHOWED COOLANT SEEPING UNDER HEADGASKET, AND DEALER RECOMMENDED REPLACING CYLINDER HEADGASKET. RESEARCHING THE ISSUE, IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR CAR AT THIS MILEAGE. WHAT MADE ME FILE THIS COMPLAINT IS THAT EACH SINGLE ONE OF THE OWNERS WHO POSTED ONLINE MENTIONED THIS PARTICULAR DIAGNOSIS CODE OF CYLINDER #6 MIFIRE. I FOUND ITINTERESTING THAT EVERYBODY HAS THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM, AND NOT EVEN ONCE IT WAS ANY OTHER CYLINDER MISFIRE BUT # 6. I HAD THE DEALER REPLACE THE HEADGASKET, WHICH TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT SINCE IT'S A RECURRING PROBLEM, I THINK TOYOTA SHOULD TAKE OF THIS ISSUE.
WHEN I RETURNED TO MY HOME AND PULLED INTO MY GARAGE, AN ALARM SOUND WENT OFF IN THE DASHBOARD AND ALL OF THE DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CAR WAS DRIVING FINE JUST PRIOR. THE NEXT MORNING I WENT TO TRY TO DRIVE IT TO DRIVE IT TO THE DEALER AND NOTICED THAT MY BRAKE PEDAL WAS VERY HARD TO PUSH AND HAD VIRTUALLY NO BRAKING ABILITY. AFTER GETTING THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID IT NEEDED A NEW ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (AKA AN ABS MODULE). THE BRAKES THEMSELVES WERE REPLACED WITHIN 2 YEARS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. ON THE DAY THAT THE INCIDENT HAPPENED, I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE TO SEE WHAT THE ALARM AND WARNING LIGHTS WERE INDICATIVE OF. I SAW THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED TO OTHER PEOPLE MOST OF WHICH HAD IT HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING AND WERE THEREFORE LEFT WITH THE INABILITY TO BRAKE. I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING, POSSIBLY LEADING TO A SERIOUS, IF NOT FATAL, ACCIDENT.
MY 4RUNNER HAS EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST ON THE ENTIRE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE RUST IS FAR MORE PERVASIVE THAN ON ANY OTHER VEHICLE I HAVE SEEN AND WILL BECOME DANGEROUS IF NOT FIXED. I BELIEVE THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH ALL 4RUNNERS FROM THIS TIME PERIOD (2002-2006). *TR
FRAME HAS STARTED RUSTING NEAR WELDS AND HOLES. VERY POOR PREVENTION OF RUST BY TOYOTA. SKID PLATES TOTALLY RUSTED OUT AND FUZED BOLTS. REAR DIFF HOUSING IS ALSO RUSTY. CAR WILL PROBABLY FALL APART IN A YEAR OR TWO.
I WAS DRIVING HOME AT AROUND 50 MPH AND HAD TO BRAKE AND SUDDENLY THE VSC/ABS BRAKE DASH INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON AND A LOUD ALARM STARTED TO SOUND. I DID NOT HIT ANYTHING, I JUST PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND WHOLE SYSTEM WENT OFF. I WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE EXIT TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER, A COUPLE BLOCKS AWAY, SO I DROVE VERY CAREFULLY TO IT AND PARKED THE CAR. WHEN THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE STARTED THE CAR AGAIN, THE VSC, ABS, BRAKE DASH INDICATOR LIGHTS ILLUMINATED WITH THE AUDIBLE ALARM ONCE AGAIN. SHE ALSO SAID THE BRAKES WERE HARD AND THAT I SHOULD NOT DRIVE IT ANYWHERE. REPLACEMENT OF THE SYSTEM COST ME AROUND $3700, OUT OF POCKET. SINCE THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT OR COLLISION, MY INSURANCE COMPANY SAID THEY DON'T COVER MAINTENANCE REPAIRS. AFTER CHECKING IF THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE, WHICH THERE WASN'T AND READING ABOUT OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE VSC/ABS BRAKE DASH ELECTRONIC SYSTEM, I TRULY BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE TOYOTA VEHICLES USING THIS VSC/ABS BRAKE SYSTEM. A FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. MY CAR HAS ONLY AROUND 60K MILES ON IT AND I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS TOYOTA 4RUNNER.
TOOK MY 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR INPSECTION AND MAINTENANCE. LEFT DEALER THINKING TRUCK WAS IN GREAT SHAPE. WHEN CHANGING BRAKES, NOTICED AN CV JOINT BOOT WAS TORN SO TOOK THE TRUCK TO A MECHANIC TO HAVE THE AXLE REPLACED (SINCE THEY DON'T JUST REPLACE THE BOOT ANYMORE). THE MECHANIC CALLED ME AS SOON AS HE PUT THE TRUCK UP ON A LIFT AND INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS SERIOUS RUST ISSUES DOWN THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME THAT COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. THE WELD ALONG THE WHOLE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME SEEMS TO HAVE RUSTED OUT AND THERE IS A HOLE THE WHOLE LENGTH OF THE FRAME. THERE ARE ALSO ADDITIONAL HOLES TOWARD THE FRONT THAT ARE RATHER LARGE IN SIZE. CALLED TOYOTA, NOT THE TOYOTA DEALER, AND THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND SUGGESTED I TAKE THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS. WHEN I ASKED WHAT WOULD HAPPEN UPON A BAD DIAGNOSIS, THEY STATED NOTHING BECAUSE THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO RECALLS OR CAMPAIGNS FOR THE TOYOTA 4RUNNERS ONLY THE TACOMAS, TUNDRAS AND SEQUOIA'S. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRECTING THIS ISSSUE BEFORE CAUSING PEOPLE SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. I AM TERRIFIED WITH MY DAUGHTER DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AND WOULD THINK TOYOTA SHOULD STEP UP TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THEIR VEHICLE OWNERS.
I WAS GOING 5 MPH AND HIT MY BRAKES. THE CONTROL ARM WAS RIPPED FROM THE FRAME DUE TO ROT/RUST. TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM FOR 4RUNNERS, BUT HAS ONLY OFFERED ASSISTANCE ON THE TACOMA AND TUNDRAS. THE BODY OF MY VEHICLE HAS NO RUST ANYWHERE, AND THE MILEAGE IS EXTREMELY LOW. I CANNOT EVEN FIND A MECHANIC TO FIX IT, BECAUSE THE FRAME IS SO BAD. I WAS TOLD, IF IT GETS FIXED, ANOTHER PART OF THE FRAME MAY FAIL WHEN I'M CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY AND PEOPLE COULD GET HURT OR KILLED. NO MECHANIC WANTS THIS LIABILITY IN DOING A REPAIR.

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA IN MAY OF 2015 IN REFERENCE OF A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION. WE HAVE GONE TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP MANY TIMES TO ASK WHEN OUR REPAIR WOULD PROCESS THOUGH AND COMMENCE. THEY KEEP ON SAYING THAT WE WERE FOURTH IN LINE.
