THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE OF THE MAIN FRAME UNDER THE VEHICLE BROKE DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. AS FAR AS I KNOW TOYOTA HAS A LARGE RECALL NOW ON RAV 4S AND LEXUS VEHICLES DUE TO EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST BUT THERE IS NO CURRENT RECALL ON 4 RUNNERS. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD MY CONCERN IN HOPES OF LEADING TO A RECALL ON 4 RUNNERS BUILT DURING SIMILAR TIME PERIOD. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA THEY SAY THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM THEY ARE TRYING TO ADDRESS. BUT THEY HAVE FAILED TO RECALL THE PRODUCTS THAT ARE DANGEROUS. WHEN THE FRAME BREAKS, THIS IS A DEADLY SITUATION WHILE DRIVING. TOYOTA OFFERED ME NO FORM OF REIMBURSEMENT WHEN I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO THEIR CORPORATE OFFICE(TOYOTA CASE #[XXX]) FILED WITH TOYOTA OVER PHONE ON 9-25-14. TOYOTA CASE #[XXX] THIS IS PART OF A MESSAGE SENT TOYOTA. MY DAUGHTER EXPERIENCED A BURNING SMELL INSIDE HER CAR ON HER WAY HOME FROM WORK. WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF NOTING THE SMELL, HER REAR WINDOW EXPLODED FORCING HER TO PULL OVER AND CALL US FOR ASSISTANCE. WHEN WE ARRIVED WE STARTED THE CAR AND DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY OF THE BURNING SMELL SHE NOTED SO WE DROVE THE CAR DIRECTLY TO TOYOTA OF HUNTINGTON BEACH FOR SERVICE. THE SERVICE WRITER DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR DEFROSTER WIRING HAD SHORTED OUT WHICH WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE OVERHEATED THE REAR WINDOW CAUSING THE EXPLOSION. WE AUTHORIZED REPAIRS ACCORDINGLY AND CONFIRMED WE WANTED TO BE CERTAIN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS IN GOOD ORDER. WE SUBSEQUENTLY WERE INFORMED BY THE SERVICE WRITER THAT THE DEFROSTER SYSTEM AND WINDOW HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND CHECKED OUT TO BE FUNCTIONAL, WITH THE SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY TURNING OFF WITHIN 15 MINUTES; HOWEVER, IT WAS LEFT TO OUR OPTION TO LEAVE THE SYSTEM DISCONNECTED. ON QUESTIONING WHY, THE WRITER ADVISED THAT HE, NOR THE SERVICE MANAGER AND THE HEAD MECHANIC HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SORT OF MALFUNCTION THOUGH IT WAS THEIR RECOMMENDATION TO LEAVE IT DISCONNECTED. WE AGREED IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY. WE HAVE SINCE DISCOVERED ON VARIOUS WEB BASED BLOGS THAT OTHER CUSTOMERS HAVE EXPERIENCED PRECISELY THE SAME PROBLEM. LINKS WERE SUBMITTED TO TOYOTA. AS DISCUSSED WITH YOUR CORPORATE REPRESENTATIVE, THE COST OF THE REPAIRS WERE AN UNWELCOME SURPRISE, HOWEVER, THE OVERWHELMING CONCERN IS WONDERING IF WE HAVE PLACED OUR DAUGHTER IN A CAR, THAT MAY HAVE INHERENT DESIGN PROBLEMS RENDERING IT UNSAFE FOR HER TRAVELS TO WORK, SCHOOL, AND VACATIONS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRUNK FAILED TO REMAIN CLOSED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE LATCH MECHANISM WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THERE WAS EXTENSIVE RUST UNDER THE HOOD, WHICH PREVENTED THE INSTALLATION OF THE TWO BOLTS TO SECURE THE BUG VISOR ON THE HOOD. THE FRONT CALIPERS WERE RUSTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 44,000.
SEVERE FRAME RUST. THIS ISSUE HAS NOW A SAFETY RELATED ISSUE. TOYOTA HAS A RECALL ON OTHER MODELS SAME YEAR. BUT YET NOTHING ON THE 4 RUNNER. BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND TOYOTA IS IGNORING IT. THIS TIME FOR A CLASS ACTION SUIT..
HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA WITH 94000 MILES ON IT. TOOK IT IN FOR A RECENT RECALL AND TOLD THE ENTIRE FRAME IS RUSTED AND BACK OF VEHICLE COULD JUST FALL APART WHILE DRIVING. MY RESEARCH INDICATES THAT TOYOTA HAS SEVERAL ISSUES WITH FRAMES RUSTING ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE ONLY RECALLED A FEW OF THEIR MODELS. I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT FOR SERVICE AND NO ONE HAS EVER MENTIONED ANY RUST PROBLEM UNTIL NOW WHEN IT IS APPARENTLY TO LATE AND THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER SAFE OR DRIVABLE. I AM EXTREMELY UPSET THAT MY CHILDREN COULD HAVE BEEN IN THIS VEHICLE WHEN THE FRAME GAVE OUT. TOYOTA REALLY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. IN 2011, I NOTICED MY 2006 4RUNNER WAS RUSTING SO I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO LOOKED AT IN AND SAID NORMAL WEAR. NOW IN 2014, PARTS OF MY 4RUNNER ARE FALLING OFF, ONE HEAT SHIELD FELL OFF AND THE OTHER ONE IS RATTLING LIKE CRAZY, THE SCREWS HAVE RUSTED THROUGH. THERE IS SEVERE RUSTING, THE ENTIRE UNDER CARRIAGE, THE LATCH TO CLOSE THE REAR DOOR, THE BRAKES,THE GAS TANK, THE BODY HAS BROWN SPOTS, THE TIRE RIMS, THE ONLY PARTS NOT RUSTED ARE THE PLASTIC PARTS. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY 4RUNNER. I HAVE HAD TO SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON REPAIRS SO FAR ON A VEHICLE BOUGHT BRAND NEW. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN EXTENSIVE LEAK OF AN UNKNOWN FLUID UNDER THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ALSO, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A SECOND OPINION WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 109,000.
CEL VSCOFF VSC TRAC. HAD IT CHECKED, WAS TOLD #6 CYLINDER PLUG OR COIL, REPLACED COIL AND ALL SPARK PLUGS .CEL LIGHT WENT OFF THE NEXT DAY BUT CAME BACK ON FOLLOWING DAY. NOTICED A SOUND OF WATER MOVING IN A PIPE OR WHAT SOUNDED LIKE IN A PIPE BEHIND DASH FOR A SECOND OR SO. WAS IDLING AND RUNNING ROUGH WHILE DRIVING, ENGINE WAS SHAKING. WENT ON SOME WEB SITES READ SOME COMMENTS FROM OTHER OWNERS ,BAD HEAD GASKET. 4RUNNER HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF NEVER ABUSED ONLY 8 YEARS OLD, NORMAL MILES I THINK, NOT VERY HAPPY WITH THIS. BAD DESIGN OF CYLINDER HEAD. I OWN A 94 4BY 4 PICK UP BOUGHT NEW 250,000 MILES LOT A ORIGINAL PARTS STILL ON TRUCK RUNS VERY WELL EXCEPT FOR BAD ROT ON CHASSIS HAPPY WITH TRUCK WAS VERY GOOD TO ME AS WAS I TO IT. I ALSO HAVE A 01 TUNDRA SR5 BOUGHT 2 YEARS AGO WITH 132,000 RUNS WELL, 02 SENSOR REPLACED PASS. FRONT WENT WELL BUT NOW HAVE TO REPLACE PASS. REAR IMPOSSIBLE SINCE ROT WILL NOT PERMIT ME TO HAVE TO REPLACE CAT CONVERTER, NOTICED LOTS OF ROT ON FRAME AS WELL AS OTHER AREAS UNDER TRUCK. HAVE LOVED TOYOTAS TILL NOW ONLY HAD GOOD THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THEM, STARTING TO HAVE SECOND THOUGHTS. *TR
THE FRAME OF THIS 4RUNNER IS RUSTED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITION OF SALT AND SNOW UP NORTH. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THESE 4RUNNERS
I WAS DRIVING MY WIFE 2006 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 APPROXIMATELY 55-60 MILES PER HOURS ON 88 WEST IN CALIFORNIA AND THE SUV EXPERIENCE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PASS 70 MILES PER HOURS. I THEN STEP ON THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD BUT THE SUV CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE FASTER THAN 70 MILES PER HOUR. WHILE MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AT ALL TIME BUT THE SUV COULD NOT SLOW DOWN. THE SUV THEN STRUCK THE REAR OF A PICK UP TRUCK IN FRONT. AFTER THE IMPACT, MY SUV CONTINUED APPROXIMATELY A HALF MILE AND THEN I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND BRING TO A STOP IN THE RIGHT LANE. TOYOTA DOWN LOAD THE DATA ON THE SUV BLACK BOX ON 3/18/2014 AND SENT A LETTER TO ME AND MY WIFE THIS WEEK STATING THAT THE GAS PEDAL IS NORMAL. *TR
DRIVING IN OFFICE PARKING STRUCTURE, TRAVELED TWO FLOOR LEVELS AND DOWN TWO PARKING STRUCTURE RAMPS. AT SECOND DOWN RAMP, MADE A RIGHT TURN TO NEXT FLOOR LEVEL, AND WITHIN 21+ FEET (WITH THE DRIVER'S FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKES), THE SUV SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED WHICH CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL, SIDESWIPE ONE CONCRETE COLUMN, FISHTAIL WITHIN THREE PARKING STALLS, AND COLLIDE WITH A SECOND CONCRETE COLUMN, WHICH STOPPED THE VEHICLE'S ACCELERATION. THE SUV IS A TOTAL LOSS. INJURIES ARE FROM DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAG AND SEAT BELT. *TR
WE HAD THE 4 RUNNER SERVICE FOR OIL CHANGE AND INSPECTION WHEN THEY FOUND THE FRAME COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH AND NONE REPAIRABLE WE STILL HAVE TO MAKE PAYMENTS. *TR
DURING SNOWSTORM IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE MODE; 4 WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM WOULD NOT ENGAGE DUE TO FAILURE OF ADD - AUTO DISCONNECTING DIFFERENTIAL ACTUATOR. THIS LED TO EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SAFETY HAZARD WITH VEHICLE SLIDING ACROSS OVERHEAD BRIDGE. NO WARNING OF FAILURE, JUST BLINKING 4 WHEEL DRIVE INDICATOR ON DASHBOARD. TOYOTA SHOULD BE ORDERED TO REPLACE THIS PART FOR FREE ON ALL 4 WHEEL DRIVE 4RUNNERS. THIS PART HAS ALSO BEEN OUT-OF-STOCK IN THE USA DUE TO EXTREMELY HIGH FAILURE RATE. NOTE: FAILURE OCCURS WHEN VEHICLE IS IN DRIVING MODE IN WINTER WEATHER WHICH REPRESENTS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD TO TOYOTA 4RUNNER DRIVERS AND OCCUPANTS. *TR
WE WERE STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. AN ALARM WENT OFF IN THE CAR AND THE RED BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. AT THAT POINT WE ROLLED THE CAR TO SEE IF THE BRAKES WERE WORKING. THIS IS WHEN WE REALIZED THERE WERE NO BRAKES AND THE ONLY BREAK WE HAD WAS OUR EMERGENCY BRAKE. IT WAS TAKEN TO A NEARBY MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A CALIPER OVER-EXTENDED CAUSING THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK OUT- LOSING THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM ALL TOGETHER. LUCKILY WE WERE NOT MOVING AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT BECAUSE HAVING LOST THE ENTIRE BREAK SYSTEM WHILE MOVING COULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. *TR
COMING TO A STOP SIGN AT ABOUT 30 MPH I APPLIED BRAKES AT NORMAL PRESSURE. THERE WAS A LOUD SNAP AND CAR SUDDENLY VEERED HARD LEFT. TOOK IT TO SERVICE CENTER FOR EVALUATION. THE FRONT RIGHT ROTOR WAS BROKEN. THE DISC HAD SEPARATED FROM THE HAT. SERVICE CENTER REPLACED BOTH FRONT ROTORS AND INSPECTED ALL BRAKES, ON JULY 24TH, THE SAME THING HAPPENED WITH THE FRONT LEFT ROTOR, WHICH IS ONLY A FEW MONTHS OLD. SOMETHING VERY DANGEROUS IS WRONG WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM ON THIS VEHICLE THAT IS ACTUALLY BREAKING THE ROTORS. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN AT HIGHER SPEEDS IT COULD CAUSE COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. *TR

AS PER THE INSPECTION REPORTS, TOYOTA SAYS I WAS DRIVING 50 MILE PER HOUR WHEN THE TRAFFIC STOPPED SUDDENLY IN FRONT OF ME. AND I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO STOP AND I HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME IN THE REAR. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED ON MAY 17 2013, BECAUSE I FILED A COMPLAINT THROUGH SAFECAR.GOV. WHEN I HAD THE ACCIDENT I CONTACTED TOYOTA FEW TIMES TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE REPAIR SHOP. HOWEVER TOYOTA REFUSES TO DO THAT. NOW THE EDR REPORT FROM TOYOTA SAYS, VEHICLE APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN ALREADY REPAIRED, SO MAKING A COMPLETE DETERMINATION AS TO WHY THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY CANNOT BE DONE. THAT LETTER ALSO ASKED ME TO SEND ANY PICTURES OF MY DAMAGED VEHICLE. I SEND THE PICTURES TO TOYOTA AND NOW ANOTHER LETTER SAYING, AFTER REVIEW OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE DAMAGE, THIS WAS NOT A DIRECT FRONTAL IMPACT BUT AN IMPACT DIRECTED TO THE LEFT FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT ABRUPT FORWARD DECELERATION OF THE VEHICLE TO DEPLOY THE AIRBAGS. MY INSURANCE COMPANY ESTIMATED DAMAGE TO THE WHOLE FRONT PART OF THE VEHICLE AND PAID $9300.00 TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. I BELIEVE TOYOTA DON'T WANT TO SAY THAT IT?S THE AIRBAG FAULT, BECAUSE THEN THEY HAVE TO RECALL ALL THE 4RUNNERS TO REPAIR THE AIRBAGS. MY INSURANCE COMPANY ESTIMATED DAMAGE TO THE WHOLE FRONT PART OF THE VEHICLE AND PAID $9300.00 TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. DRIVING IN RAIN ON FREEWAY CONNECTOR ROAD , 25 MPH, REQUIRED TO USE BRAKES DUE TO ANOTHER DRIVER ILLEGALLY SWERVING FROM SLOW LANE OF FREEWAY ADJACENT TO CONNECTOR ROAD, ACROSS TWO SOLID LINES, IN FRONT OF A CAR THAT HIT THEIR BRAKES, AND WAS REAR-ENDED BY A SECOND CAR, WHICH WAS IN FRONT OF ME. IN SEPTEMBER 2012 I NOTICED PAINT BLISTERING ON THE TAILGATE OF MY 4RUNNER. I NOW (8/13) HAVE RUST THROUGH ORIGINATING FROM THE INSIDE MIDDLE OF THE TAIL GATE. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO MY LOCAL BODY SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 06 4RUNNER. IT WAS CAUSED BY A SOUND DEAFENING MATERIAL ON THE INSIDE OF THE GATE. "THE MATERIAL GETS WET AND HOLDS THE MOISTURE CAUSING BODY ROT". THIS SHOP HAS REPAIRED OTHER 4RUNNERS WITH THIS PROBLEM. I ALSO OWN A 1994 ISUZU TROOPER WITH NO BODY RUST THAT SITS NEXT TO IT IN MY DRIVEWAY. I WAS TOLD BY THE TOYOTA REP (OAKDALE TOYOTA IN NY) THAT IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. I ALSO HAVE EXTENSIVE RUST ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE. THE TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD BEFORE. *TR

AFTER NOTICING ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH MY FUEL GAUGE ON A 2006 4RUNNER WITH LESS THAN 60K MILES, WE BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE TOYOTA DEALER. WHEN THE TOYOTA MECHANIC PULLED THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY OUT OF THE GAS TANK, HE DISCOVERED A BURNED AND MELTED WIRING HARNESS THAT SITS DIRECTLY INSIDE THE TANK. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS IT DEALS WITH AN UNREGULATED AMOUNT OF HEAT AND ELECTRICITY IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE GAS TANK. TOOK IN FOR SERVICE AND INFORMED THAT ALL OTHER PADS HAD 20% LIFE AND LEFT FRONT CALIPER OUTSIDE LOWER PISTON WAS SEIZED AS WELL AS UNSERVICEABLE BLEEDER VALVE LEAVING NO OTHER OPTION THAN TO REPLACE WITH CALIPER. NOW, NOT ONE WEEK AFTER REPLACING CALIPER, NEW ONE IS ALREADY RUSTING WHILE ALL OTHERS LOOK FINE. *TR

ACCORDING TO THE CONTACT THE MAINTENANCE SECTION OF THE MANUAL STATED THAT THE BUSHINGS DO NOT NEED TO BE CHECKED UNTIL 100,000 MILES. THE DRIVER SEAT ON MY 2006 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SPORT 4X4 IS LOOSE AND GETTING LOOSER BY THE DAY. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND OTHER 4RUNNER OWNERS ARE SIMILAR ISSUES. THE ISSUE IS SO BAD THAT TOYOTA PUT OUT A TSB FOR THE ISSUE. THE TSB IS ONLY FOR MANUAL SEATS THOUGH AND I HAVE POWER SEATS. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN A VEHICLE WHEN THE DRIVER SEAT MOVES, I THINK THAT IS RATHER SELF EXPLANATORY. APPARENTLY, MOST OF THE CHARGE IS FOR LABOR, THE REPLACEMENT PART IS NOT EXPENSIVE. I UNDERSTAND THE AVALON HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS REPAIR COST IS ASTRONOMICAL, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT IT'S A COMMONLY KNOWN PROBLEM IN TOYOTAS - POSSIBLY FROM POOR DESIGN.
