SHIFTED (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) INTO REVERSE. FUSE BLEW. POWER WINDOWS AND ALL DASHBOARD GAUGES STOPPED FUNCTIONING. WIRING HARNESS, AT THE HINGE, IN THE TRUNK HAD TO BE REPAIRED. *JB
DT: CONSUMER OWNED A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. SHE WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND CAME UPON A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. CONSUMER SLOWED DOWN TO STOP WHEN LIGHT TURNED GREEN CONSUMER WAS NOT FULLY STOPPED, SHE TOOK FOOT OFF OF BRAKE AND APPLY THROTTLE. WHEN CONSUMER PRESSED ACCELERATOR, PEDAL STUCK AND WOULD NOT MOVE, VEHICLE COASTED OFF THE ROAD AND STOPPED. CONSUMER SAID THAT PEDAL STUCK BEFORE, BUT NOT TO THIS EXTENT. SHE WAITED UNTIL A FRIEND ARRIVED, THEN FRIEND PRESSED PEDAL VERY HARD AND IT BROKE LOOSE, THEN PEDAL SEEMED TO WORK. CONSUMER STATED THAT IT DID NOT SEEM TO HAPPEN AS MUCH WHEN AIR CONDITIONER WAS USED. ALSO, ON A PREVIOUS OCCASION VEHICLE QUITE AT A RED LIGHT WHEN SHE TRIED TO ACCELERATE. CONSUMER SAID WHEN SHE BOUGHT VEHICLE IT REVVED AND ROCK BACKED BACK AND FORTH WHILE IDLING. *AK
GETTING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TOO FREQUENTLY ON A TOYOTA CAMRY 1999 MODEL. HAD TO REPLACE CHARCOAL CANISTER AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS
DT: THE CONSUMER'S WIFE WAS DRIVING WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF HER, SHE THEN HIT A UTILITY POLE AND A FIRE HYDRANT WITH THE FRONT OF VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE OFFICER ON THE SCENE AS WELL AS FIREMEN, WERE SURPRISED THAT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THEY TOLD CONSUMER THAT HE SHOULD NOTIFY SOMEONE. THE CONSUMER NOTICED THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. CONSUMER SAID THAT NOTHING INDICATED THAT AIRBAGS OR ANYTHING ELSE SHOULD NOT BE WORKING CORRECTLY. NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON. CONSUMER HAS NOT HAD ANY PROBLEM LIKE THIS BEFORE.*AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE STRUT PLATES WERE MAKING NOISE. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC, AND HE STATED THE STRUT PLATES SHOULD BE REPLACED. *AK
MY LATE 1999 TOYOTA ECHO WAS PARKED AFTER A SHORT DRIVE. TWO AND A HALF HOURS LATER IT BURST INTO FLAMES. THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND A LARGE AREA OF MY HOME WAS BURNED. I AND MY NIECE WERE ASLEEP UPSTAIRS. NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE SMELL OF SMOKE WOKE US. WHEN WE FIRST SAW THE CAR, A COLUMN OF WHITE FIRE WAS SHOOTING UP THROUGH THE WINDSCREEN TO THE CEILING 11 FEET ABOVE. THE FIRE CAME FROM THE CENTER OF THE CONSOLE/DASH AREA. AT THAT TIME THERE WERE NO FLAMES AROUND OR UNDER THE CAR. JUST THE COLUMN OF FLAME FROM THE CENTER. THE HORN WAS SOUNDING. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE ARRIVED WITHIN 10 MINUTES AND CONFIRMED THAT THE FIRE WAS SEATED IN THE CENTRAL DASH AREA. THE KEYS WERE BESIDE BY BED. THE CAR HAD ONLY BEEN SERVICED BY TOYOTA SERVICE CENTERS AND THERE WERE NO MODIFICATIONS TO THE CAR. WHEN TOYOTA WERE NOTIFIED, THEY SENT INVESTIGATORS TO LOOK FOR A RELAY NEAR THE ALTERNATOR. THE RESULTS OF MY INSURANCE', TOYOTA'S AND AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR'S INVESTIGATIONS WERE (AS RELAYED TO ME BY PHONE) UNSPECIFIED FIRE STARTING IN THE DASH. *JB
1999 TOYOTA CAMRY SOON AFTER WE PURCHASED OUR 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY MY WIFE AND I NOTICED THAT EVERY TIME WE WENT OVER THE SPEED BUMPS IN OUR APARTMENT COMPLEX AT VERY LOW SPEEDS WE WOULD HEAR A NOISE - A CLICK/CLACK AT THE LEFT FRONT TIRE - NOT LOUD BUT DISTINCT. I CALLED THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER - STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA AND DESCRIBED THE ISSUE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER & REQUESTING AN APPOINTMENT. HE ASSURED ME THAT THIS IS SIMPLY THE BRAKES THAT ARE "BEING SEATED" AND NOT AN ISSUE. THE NOISE CONTINUED AND BECAME LOUDER WITH TIME. AS THIS POINT WE WERE BEYOND THE WARRANTY PERIOD. I TOOK THE CAR INTO MELODY TOYOTA AND ASKED THE MECHANIC TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE AS THE NOISE WAS MUCH LOUDER AND OCCURRED WHENEVER WE GO OVER ANY POTHOLE ETC, NOT ONLY BUMPS.. THE MECHANIC REPORTED THAT THIS WAS A BROKEN STRUT ARM OR STABILIZER ARM. I ASKED IF THERE WAS A WARRANTY AS I HAD COMPLAINED TO STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA WHEN THE CAR ONLY HAD A FEW THOUSAND MILES. THE MECHANIC STATED THERE IS NO WARRANTY OR RECALL ON THIS ITEM. I ASKED IF THE ISSUE WAS COMMON AND THE MILEAGE AND HE RESPONDED I HAVE SEEN THIS ISSUE ON A NUMBER OF CAMRY'S - THE MILEAGE IS IRRESPECTIVE - LOW MILES OR HIGH. I HAVE NOT HAD THE ISSUE RESOLVED AS HE STATED IT WOULD NOT HURT THE CAR. PER THE MECHANIC THERE MUST BE TONS OF CARS THAT HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE REPAIRED. I BELIEVE THAT TOYOTA IS FULLY AWARE OF THIS ISSUE FOR QUITE SOME TIME AS WELL. *TR
CAR OVERHEATED. DROVE TO TOYOTA DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS A RADIATOR PROBLEM. THIS CAR HAS 51000 MILES ON IT.
EMISSIONS COMPONENTS FAILURE. I HAVE REPLACED TWO OXYGEN SENSORS AND NOW I NEED TO REPLACE THE EVAP CANISTER (CHARCOAL). ALL BREAKDOWNS HAVE OCCURED BEFORE 65,000 MILES
1999 TOYOTA SOLARA DOOR ENTRY REMOTE FAILED.*MR WHEN THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO HIS VEHICLE, HE WAS UNABLE TO UNLOCK THE DOOR WITH HIS KEY. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THE DOORS WERE FROZEN BECAUSE THE KEY HAD NEVER BEEN USED TO UNLOCK THEM. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED IT WAS THE MANUFACTURERS RESPONSIBILITY TO INFORM HIM THAT HE NEEDED TO USE THE KEY OCCASIONALLY TO UNLOCK THE DOORS TO PREVENT THEM FROM FREEZING UP. *JB
CONSUMER KEYLESS REMOTE DID NOT WORK AND COULD NOT UNLOCK DOORS. *TS THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THE DOORS WERE FROZEN BECAUSE THE KEY HAD NEVER BEEN USED TO UNLOCK THEM. THE CONSUMER STATED HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INFORMED TO USE THE KEY OCCASIONALLY TO UNLOCK THE DOORS IN ORDER TO PREVENT THEM FROM FREEZING UP. *JB
THE SUSPENSION ON THE CAR IS VERY NOISY. THERE IS A LOUD SQUEAKING LIKE NOISE WHEN DRIVING OVER ANY BUMP. I BELIEVE THAT THE CAR NEEDS NEW STRUTS AND THAT TOYOTA SHOULD FIX IT FOR FREE. THE CAR HAS ONLY 48,000 MILES ON IT. *JB
THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR A TUNE UP AND AFTER THE TUNE UP THE DEALER TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR A TEST DRIVE AND THE ENGINE BLEW OUT. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THEY WOULD REPLACE THE ENGINE. *AK THERE WAS KNOCKING, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RUN. THE ORIGINAL MOTOR ROD HAD COME APART. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF MISUSE. THE OIL WAS OKAY AND THERE WAS NO SIGN OF WHY THE ROD HAD COME APART. *SC *JB
ON MARCH 21,2005 I GAVE MY TYOTA CAMRY CE 1999 WITH 103,000 MILES ON IT FOR TUNE UP TO DOOR'S AUTO SPEED SHOP. THE NEXT DAY, AFTER THE TUNEUP WAS COMLETED THE MECHANICS TOOK THE CAR FOR A TEST DRIVE. DURING THE DRIVE BELOW 40 MILES PER HOUR THE ENGINE BLEW UP. MR. KEITH DOOR, THE OWNER AND MANAGER OF THE SHOP, CALLED THE LOCAL TOYOTA OF SLIDELL AND INFORMED THEM THAT THE ENGINE BLEW UP BECAUSE OF THE ACCUMULATION OF THE SLUDGE IN THE ENGINE. THEY AGREED TO CHANGE THE ENGINE FREE OF CHARGE. LATER, HOWEVER, THEY DEMANDED $4,000 FOR THE NEW ENGINE CLAIMING THAT THE CAUSE OF THE BLOWUP WAS NOT THE SLUDGE.THEY COULD NOT TELL, HOWEVER,WHY THE ENGINE BLEW UP.
THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS SET JUST OVER 70 MPH AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN. THE VEHICLE REACHED 90 MPH. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT DISENGAGE. THE IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF AND THE ENGINE FINALLY QUIT. 20 MINUTES LATER THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND REDLINED. THE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE WAS REPLACED. (DENSO CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR, TOYOTA 88002-06020, SERIAL#MX100300-6040 12V, MADE IN MEXICO) *AK THE CONSUMER HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED MONTHS BEFORE THE INCIDENT, HOWEVER THE HEAT PRODUCED CAUSED THE ROTORS TO WARPED. *SC *JB
ON MARCH 2, THE ENGINE ON MY TOYOTA CAMRY THREW A ROD, AND RESULTED IN A TERMINAL FAILURE OF THE ENGINE. I HAVE MAINTAINED THIS CAR SINCE I BOUGHT IT, SUPPOSEDLY "CERTIFIED USED" FROM ROSEVILLE TOYOTA, IN AUGUST 2002. I PLEADED WITH TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION FOR ASSISTANCE BUT THEY SAID THAT MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED 2 MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. DUE TO EXTREME STRAINS ON MY TIME, I HAD THE ENGINE REBUILT FOR NEARLY $3700. UPON DRIVING THE CAR FOR LESS THAN 200 MILES AFTER HAVING THE ENGINE REBUILT, THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT AN ESTIMATED $1500. I DO NOT HAVE TIME OR MONEY TO CONTINUALLY REPAIR THIS CAR AND HAVE ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE FROM BOTH ROSEVILLE TOYOTA AND TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION BOTH. IT WAS RECENTLY BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE TOYOTA THAT I PURCHASED FROM ROSEVILLE TOYOTA WAS NEVER CERTIFIED TO BEGIN WITH. THEY MISLEADINGLY SOLD ME A CAR UNDER THE FALSE IMPRESSION THAT IT WAS CERTIFIED WHEN IT WAS NOT. I PLACE THE BLAME FOR THE RECENT FAILURES AND RESULTANT REPAIR FEES ON ROSEVILLE TOYOTA. IF I HAD KNOWN THAT THIS PARTICULAR CAR WAS NOT A CERTIFIED TOYOTA VEHICLE, I WOULD NEVER HAVE TAKEN IT OFF THE LOT AND CONSEQUENTIALLY EXPERIENCED ANY OF THE PROBLEMS DESCRIBED ABOVE. HOWEVER, I WAS FALSELY MISLEAD TO BELIEVE THAT I WAS GETTING A CERTIFIED VEHICLE AND DROVE OFF HAPPILY. NONE OF THE PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED ARE AVAILABLE. *AK
RECALL CAMPAIGN 01V012000 CONCERNING ACCELERATOR CABLE. AFTER ENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATOR CABLE STUCK. VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE WITHOUT CONSIDERABLE PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LUNGE OR SURGE FORWARD. *AK
1999 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA SE, NOT V6, ACCELERATED WITHOUT STEPPING ON ACCELERATION AND HIT A WALL. ACCELERATOR PEDAL DID NOT STICK, BUT ACCELERATION CONTINUED. NO OTHER VEHICLE WAS HIT, I CRASHED INTO A WALL. *JB
AFTER MAKING A LEFT TURN VEHICLE THUMPED. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THEAT ENGINE WAS DEFECTIVE. CONTACT TO BE MADE WITH THE MANUFACTURER.*AK
DRIVING AT ABOUT 10 MPH, BRAKES SEEMED TO GIVEAWAY. WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKES VEHICLE CONTINUED TO TRAVEL, BRAKE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR, GIVING NO RESPONSE. *JB
SIGNAL LIGHTS AND EMERGENCY FLASHERS DEFECTED (WON'T FLASH). REPLACE FUSES AND UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL PART (DON'T KNOW THE CORRECT NAME) SEVERAL TIMES AND IT WORK FOR MAYBE TWO WEEKS, THEN STOP. MECHANIC STATED ITS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM; ALSO HEAR LIKE A FRYING NOISE WHEN USING SIGNALS AND SOMETIMES WHEN JUST DRIVING. INSIDE CAR LIGHT WORKS WHEN IT WANTS TOO. REPLACE WITH RECOMMENDED FUSE AND WORKS FOR A DAY AND STOPS. *NM
COMPLAINT VIA E-MAIL. HAD LEARNED THAT NHTSA INVESTIGATED SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN THE 2002 AND 2003 TOYOTA CAMRY. I EXPERIENCED THIS EFFECT RECENTLY WITH MY 1999 CAMRY. THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE INSIDE THE GARAGE OF MY APARTMENT BUILDING. ALTHOUGH NO INJURIES OCCURRED, MY CAR AND ANOTHER CAR SUFFERED SOME BODY DAMAGE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER , BUT THE TECHNICIANS WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING THAT WOULD EXPLAIN THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. *AK THE CONSUMER WAS BACKING INTO HIS PARKING SPACE WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD. THE BRAKES DID NOT SLOW THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER HIT A POST, BOUNCED OF IT AND HIT A PARKED VEHICLE. THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. *SC
CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONT IMPACT COLLISION AT ABOUT 50 MPH. UPON IMPACT, AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. CONSUMER WILL CONTACT MANUFACTURER.*AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING (MPH UNKNOWN) THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD STICK. THE DEALER REPAIRED THE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID #01V012000). THE DEALER STATED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
VEHICLE DID NOT TURN OFF WHEN THE KEY WAS PULLED OUT THE IGNITION SWITCH. SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE SWITCH BEFORE THE VEHICLE FINALLY TURNED OFF. CONSUMER WILL NOTIFY MANUFACTURER.*AK *JB

I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH APPROX. 89,000 MILE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I AM TOLD THAT THE CHARCOAL CANISTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $ 294 PARTS AND 190 LABOR. UPON CHECKING THE INTERNET TO SEE IF THIS WAS A LEGITIMATE REPAIR IT SEEMS THIS PROBLEM IS PREVALENT ON MANY TOYOTA MODELS INCLUDING MINE. *NM
HORN NOT WOKING, NEED TO REPLACE STEERING PAD ASSEMBLY AND ORDER LEFT AIR BAG MODULE. THEY STATED DUE TO HORN, AIR BAG WILL NOT WORK. ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH AIRBAG/HORN. *AK

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THIS OCCURRED WHEN VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING 70 MPH. ALSO, SPEEDOMETER FAILED WHILE THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE DECREASED. *AK THE DEALER REPLACED THE SPEED SENSOR SEVERAL TIMES BUT THAT NEVER ALLEVIATED THE PROBLEM. *NM
DEFECTIVE AUTOMOBILE, RANGING FROM TRANSMISSIONS PROBLEMS TO PAINT PROBLEMS. ENGINE STALLS. *BF *TC
AFTER BEING STRUCK ON THE SIDE BY A VEHICLE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG CAME OUT TO THE SIZE OF A SMALL BALLOON, IT DID NOT DEPLOY TO FULL SIZE. THE VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. *JB.
I PURCHASED A NEW TOYOTA CAMRY IN NOVEMBER 1999. IN 2004 (THE CAR HAS FEWER THAN 45,000 MILES ON IT), WHILE TRAVELING ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY, THE ACCELERATOR BECAME "STUCK". LUCKILY, WE WERE TRAVELING AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED, BECAUSE WE HAD JUST ACCELERATED AFTER LEAVING A RED LIGHT. THE DRIVER (A FRIEND) KEPT HER WITS AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, THEN STEERED INTO AN EMPTY LOT WHERE SHE SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. AT THIS POINT THE CAR'S RPMS WERE "REDLINING". WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA TO REPORT THE INCIDENT I WAS TOLD THAT I WAS AT FAULT - THAT I SHOULD HAVE HAD THE ACCELERATOR SERVICED. I ASKED IF THERE WERE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE OWNERS MANUAL THAT WARNED OWNERS TO HAVE THE ACCELERATOR SERVICED.DID THE OWNERS MANUAL DISCLOSE THAT THE ACCELERATOR WOULD STICK? THE ANSWER WAS NO. I THEN CONTACTED TOYOTA BY EMAIL AND FULLY DESCRIBED WHAT HAD HAPPENED. THEY ASSIGNED ME A CASE NUMBER AND SENT ME A COUPON FOR $500 OFF MY NEXT TOYOTA. NEEDLESS TO SAY I GOT RID OF THE CAR. UNTIL 2005 I KEPT ALL THE INFORMATION, BUT MY HOME WAS FLOODED IN KATRINA AND I NO LONGER HAVE THE DOCUMENTS. WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THE RECALLS I FELT THAT SOMEONE SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS ACCELERATOR PROBLEM HAS EXISTED FOR A VERY LONG TIME AND TOYOTA WAS VERY AWARE OF IT. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DID REPAIR WORK FOR THE PROBLEM. *TR
A 1999 GREEN TOYOTA CAMPRY CAUGHT FIRE WHILE ITS OWNER WAS DRIVING IT. THE OWNER SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE AT THE LEFT REAR CORNER CLOSEST TO THE WINDSHIELD. THE CAR DIED IN PLACE A CAUGHT FIRE. *AK
I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY LE V6 AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS COMING ON. TOYOTA DEALER TELLS ME IT'S THAT THE CHARCOAL CANISTER NEEDS REPLACEMENT, SO I DID AND THE LIGHT IS BACK ON AGAIN. I KNOW THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE WITH THIS ISSUE AND WE NEED TO HAVE TOYOTA ADDRESS THE ISSUE ASAP.*AK
WHILE DRIVING TRACTION CONTROL AT 65000 MILES FAILED. THE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. TOOK VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC, AND HE RESET IT. THEN, IT HAPPENED AGAIN, LIGHT CAME ON WHILE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING. CONSUMER BOUGHT THE PART; HAD IT PUT ON. WITHIN A MONTH THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH. TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE MECHANIC THEY FOUND THAT THE AIR BAG SENSOR MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE. AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS COMPLETELY INOPERABLE.*AK
1999 TOYOTA CAMRY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE CONSUMER HAD THE OIL CHANGED, AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR REPLACED, FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS REPLACED BUT NONE OF THOSE REPAIRS SOLVED THE PROBLEM. *TS THE DEALER SUGGESTED THAT SINCE THE CONSUMER 'S VEHICLE WASN'T DRIVEN MUCH THAT CARBON MAY HAVE BEEN BUILDING UP IN THE VALVE AREA. THE DEALER CLEANED THE VALVE AREA AND CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY AND FUEL INJECTION BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. *NM ***NO ANS REQUIRED***
AIRBAG LIGHT FLASHED ON/OFF BACK IN AUG. 2003. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE REPAIRED AND THOUGHT THAT WAS THE END OF THE PROBLEM. ALMOST A YEAR LATER IN JULY 2004 MY AIRBAG LIGHT STARTED FLASHING ON/OFF AGAIN, I THEN RETURNED IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE ONCE AGAIN IT WAS "FIXED OR REPAIRED" NOW, TWO MONTHS LATER I'M HAVING AGAIN THE SAME PROBLEM. I DON'T THINK TOYOTA KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND IT'S A REAL CONCERN TO THINK THAT IF THERE'S A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT OR INNCODENT THE AIR BAG(S ) MAY NOT DEPLOY. I'M FRUSTRATED WITH THIS PROBLEM AND AM FILING A COMPLAINT IN HOPES THAT MAYBE SOMEONE WILL LISTEN OR PAY ATTENTION. THIS COULD GET TO BE A COSTLY ISSUE THAT NEVER GETS RESOLVED. THIS COMPLAINT INVOLVES TWO VEHICLES; THE FIRST WAS WITH A 1992 TOYOTA CAMRY VIN#[XXX] PURCHASE DATE: 7/16/1992 MILEAGE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT: 125394 IN WHICH THE VEHICLE WAS IDLED IN THE CONSUMERS DRIVEWAY AND AFTER TWO MINUTES A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD ALONG WITH SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD; THERE WAS MOTOR OIL AND METAL PIECES FROM THE ENGINE UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE AND AT 91386K MILES THE TIMING BELT WAS REPLACED; THE SECOND VEHICLE WAS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY; THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE BEING DRIVEN ON THE FREEWAY AT 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE WATER PUMP HAD FROZEN. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS BUT THE REQUEST WAS DENIED. A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS (VEHICLE UNSPECIFIED) : CONNECTING RODS#1 AND #4 BROKE AND PUNCHED HOLES IN THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK, ONE OF THE CONNECTING RODS BROKE OFF AT THE PISTON AS WELL AS THE CRANKSHAFT, THE OTHER CONNECTING ROD BROKE OFF OF THE CRANKSHAFT, BUT REMAINED ATTACHED TO THE PISTON, PISTON #1 AND #4 IMPACTED INTO THE CYLINDER HEAD, WHEN THE CONNECTING RODS BROKE, PARTS OF THE ENGINE PUNCHED A HOLE IN THE OIL PAN, ALLOWING OIL TO LEAK OUT, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE LEFT CV BOOTS WERE TORN, THE BROKEN CONNECTING ROD #1 CAUSED THE A/C COMPRESSOR TO BE BROKEN AWAY FROM THE ENGINE AND THE A/C BELT TO BE THROWN FREE, AND THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE WAS CONSISTENT WITH THE ENGINE TURNING AT MODERATE OR HIGH SPEED AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. *AK *SC INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
I BOUGHT A USED 199 CAMRY TWO WEEKS AGO. THE FIRST WEEK I NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH THE PASSENGER WINDOW. IT WOULD NOT ROLL UP OR DOWN AFTER HAVING ROLLED IN DOWN AND UP SEVEREAL TIMES. I MENTIONED TO MY BROTHER THAT I HAD A PROBELM WITH MY CAMRY AND BEFORE I COULD EVEN STATE THE PROBLEM HE ASKED IF IT WAS A 1999 CAMRY AND IF I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE WINDOW ROLLING UP AND DOWN. APPARENTLY HIS MOTHER HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM -- BUT JUST TURNED IT IN AT THE END OF HER LEASE. THE DEALER SAYS THAT IT IS PROBABLY THE REGULATOR. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM ALTHOUGH THERE IS NOT RECALL ON THIS. DEALER SAYS IT WILL COST $400. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM IN THE WINTER ( I LIVE IN WISCONSIN). THERE IS ALSO A CONSIDERABLE SAFETY AND SECURITY CONCERN. I AM NOT SURE WHETHER I WILL RETURN THE CAR OR GET IT REPAIRED.
WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH VEHICLE STALLED. WHILE APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND DROVE IT HOME. THE CAUSE HAD NOT BEEN DETERMINED.*AK
VEHICLE CONSISTENTLY DIES ON THE ROAD. *MR THERE WERE MORE THAN FOUR ATTEMPTS MADE TO REPAIR THE WARRANTY PROBLEM. *SC *JB
POOR BODY DESIGN. NARROW REAR WINDOW. *BF 2 BACKSEATS HEAD RESTS ARE TO TALL AND CLOSE TOGETHER COMPLETELY BLOCKING THE WINDOW. VERY HARD TO DO A SAFE LANE CHANDGE. *TC
THE RADIATOR WAS EMPTY, AND HERE WERE TRACES OF ANTIFREEZE ON THE INSPECTION PLUG ON THE TIMING OVER. AS I EXPLAINED UPON OUR INTIAL MEETING, THIS INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A DEFINITE LOSS OF ANTIFREEZE, WITH A DEFINITE POSSIBILITY OF WATER PUMP FAILURE AND CORRESPONDING TIMING BELT FAILURE. HOWEVER, WHEN I DID THE INITIAL TEAR-DOWN OF THE TIMING AREA, I FOUND A RATHER SURPRISING SCENARIO. THE TIMING BELT WAS INTACT. THERE WERE NONE OF HE USUAL OIL LEAKS FROM THE CAM/CRANK SEALS. THE BELT WAS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. THE WATER PUMP HAD SUFFERED A CATASTROPHIC BEARING FAILURE. IN FACT, I FOUND PIECES OF METAL IN THE TIMING AREA, AS WELL AS A FEW OF THE BALL BEARINGS FROM THE WATER PUMP SHAFT BEARING. THE TIMING AREA ALSO HAD TRACES OF ANTIFREEZE (OEM ANTIFREEZE) FROM WHERE THE WATER PUMP HAD BEEN LEAKING PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. AS PER OUR DISCUSSION, I PROCEEDED TO TEAR THE ENGINE DOWN FURTHER TO INSPECT FOR OTHER POSSIBLE DAMAGE. AT THIS TIME, WE WERE SIMPLY EXPECTING TO FIND A WARPED/POSSIBLY CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD. UPON REMOVING THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS REQUIRED TO REMOVE THE HEAD, AND REMOVING THE HEAD ITSELF, I INSPECTED THE BLOCK, CYLINDERS, AND PISTONS. THE INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE PISTONS HAD SUFFERED SEVERE DAMAGE. THERE IS OVER THIRTY THOUSANDTHS OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE TOP EDGE OF THE PISTON AND THE CYLINDER WALL. THE TOP PISTON RING IS CLEARLY VISIBLE. THEREFORE, I MUST DECLARE THE ENGINE A LOSS. IN FACT, I HAVE MADE THE OBSERVATION THAT TOYOTA VEHICLES USING THE OEM ANTIFREEZE USUALLY HAD FAR FEWER COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEMS OF ANY KIND. IN THEIR VEHICLES. I HAVE TWO TOYOTA PICKUPS. ONE HAS A REMAN ENGINE. IT HAS OEM ANTIFREEZE AND AN OEM OIL FILTER. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, I FEEL IN MY OPINION, AND MY EXPERIENCE, THAT THIS PROBLEM IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. WHAT THE MANUFACTURER CAN AND WILL DO FOR YOU I DO NOT KNOW. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ANOTHER VEHICLE VEERED INTO CONSUMER'S VEHICLE LANE, CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, CAUSING VEHICLE TO COLLIDE INTO THE GUARD RAIL AND CRASH. UPON IMPACT, BOTH FRONTAL AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. *AK
WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT THE VEHICLE COLLIDED INTO A PARK VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE SHE HAD TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. A RECALL WAS ISSUED, HOWEVER THE VIN WAS OUTSIDE OF THE REMEDY SCOPE. ON ONE OCCASION THE GLASS WINDOW ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FELL OFF TRACK CAUSING WINDOW TO MALFUNCTION. *AK
ON AUG 10, 2004 MY SISTER WAS DRIVING HER 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY WHEN IT INEXPLICABLY DROVE OFF THE W. BOUND LANES OF IL I '74' AT MI MARKER 115. IT TRAVELED 921 FT CROSSING THE MEDIAN, I '74' E. BOUND LANES, UP A HILL, EVENTUALLY STRIKING A TREE WHERE THE CAR BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES, BURNING MY SISTER TO DEATH. A WITNESS STATEMENT BY A SEMI TRUCK DRIVER STATED THAT HE SAW SPARKS COMING FROM THE UNDERCARRIAGE. I ATTENDED THE CORONER'S INQUEST WHERE THE FACTUAL MATTERS WERE PRESENTED INCLUDING A TOXICOLOGY REPORT. HER DEATH WAS RULED AN "ACCIDENT". *TR
TODAY, JUST 2 HOURS AGO, WHEN I TIRED PARALLEL PARKING MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY INTO A METER PARKING LOT ALONG THE STREET, AS USUAL I GAVE IT A LITTLE GAS TO BACK IT IN, BUT UNEXPECTLY, IT SUDDENLY ACCERATED BACKWARD VERY VERY FAST, HIT THE PARKING METER AND BROKE THE METER POLE, IT ALSO CAUSED A DENT IN THE BUMPER AND TRUNK COVER AREA. NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR TO CORRECT THE FAILURE.*AK
