TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DRIVERS SEAT COULD NOT BE ADJUSTED TO ALLOW DRIVERS OF DIFFERENT HEIGHTS TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MOVED THE SEAT FORWARD INCH BY INCH IN ORDER TO ADJUST THE SEAT. THE SEAT BECAME STUCK IN ONE POSITION AND CAN NO LONGER BE ADJUSTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT THE SEAT TRACT ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 56,700.
THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. A HOLE HAS APPEARED ON THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE. THE OIL LEVEL ON THE ENGINE WAS AND IS FULL UP. THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS FULL UP. NO WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS WERE IN EVIDENCE ON THE DASHBOARD PRIOR TO AND DURING THE FAILURE. ALL MAINTENANCE WAS CURRENT AND MOST WAS PERFORMED BY THE TOYOTA DEALER. THE MECHANIC THAT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AFTER IT WAS TOWED TO HIS FACILITY INDICATED THAT IT WAS THE SECOND YEAR 2000 CAMRY THAT HE HAS SEEN WITH A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE THIS YEAR. WEEKS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED FOR A SHORT TIME. THEY RESET THEMSELVES PRIOR TO THE MECHANIC EXAMINING THE VEHICLE AND HE COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. THERE WAS NO TROUBLE DATA RECORDED IN THE COMPUTER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WAS DRIVING 55 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO 65 MPH. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE LOST CONTACT OF VEHICLE WHICH CAME TO A STOP AFTER FLIPPING OVER. THE DRIVER RECEIVED INJURIES TO HER LOWER BACK BUT DID NOT GO THE HOSPITAL. THE POLICE WERE CONTACTED AND A REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC PENDING AN INVESTIGATION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK AND COULD NOT BE DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT APPLIED MORE FORCE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, CAUSING THE TIRES TO SPIN AND THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE ABNORMALLY FAST. IN ADDITION, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD NOT RETURN TO THE ORIGINAL POSITION AS DESIGNED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ACCELERATION RECALLS *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WITHIN ONE MONTH OF DRIVING HER BRAND NEW VEHICLE, SHE NOTICED ACCELERATION ISSUES. THE DEALER ADVISED HER TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE DROVE AT 45 MPH AND MOVED HER FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR AS IF SHE WERE ABOUT TO SLOW DOWN, BUT THEN APPLIED THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN, THE COMPUTER THAT WOULD RAN THE DRIVE BY WIRE WOULD GET CONFUSED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD BEGIN TO SHIFT DOWN. THE VEHICLE WOULD THEN GO INTO NEUTRAL FOR A FEW SECONDS, LONG ENOUGH TO APPLY THE PEDAL. FINALLY, THE VEHICLE WOULD GET THE MESSAGE AND QUICKLY CATCH UP TO THE LEVEL OF COMPRESSION OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE ELECTRONICS. THE CONSUMER HAS SINCE TRADED THE VEHICLE. *JB

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER STATED THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE TRENDS IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 172,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES AND THAT SHE HAD TO CONTINUOUSLY TAP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IN ORDER TO DISENGAGE IT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 01V012000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 132,000.
I WAS ABOUT TO PULL OUT ONTO ROUTE 23 S. IN WAYNE NJ. I WAS APP 35 FEET IN FRONT OF A STORE. I PLACED THE CAMRY IN PARK FOR A SECOND. I THEN WENT TO PLACE THE CAR IN DRIVE. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STARTED GOING IN REVERSE STRAIGHT TOWARD THE STORE. I COULD NOT STOP IT. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW YOU ARE GOING TO REACT IN A SITUATION THAT COMES ON YOU SUDDENLY. ANYWAY, I OPENED THE CAR DOOR TO GET MY BEARINGS AND WAS MORE THAN HALF-WAY OUT THE CAR. MY LEFT LEG WAS ALSO OUT OF THE CAR. I HAD ONE HAND ON THE STEERING WHEEL. AT THE LAST SECOND, I TURNED THE WHEEL AND MISSED BOTH THE STORE AND PARKED CARS. MY CAR CRASHED INTO A FENCE. I WAS NOT HURT BUT WAS SHAKEN UP. TOYOTA SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THEY WOULD NOT LET EITHER MYSELF OR MY MECHANIC IN WHILE IT WAS INSPECTED. SINCE I WAS MORE THAN HALFWAY OUT THE CAR, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO HAVE MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR BECAUSE OF THE ANGLE I WAS IN. I ALSO HAVE A WITNESS TO THE ABOVE. *TR
PURCHASED FALKEN TIRES 11/15/2010.FK ZE912B AT SEARS . ALL FOUR TIRES WERE HIGH SPEED BALANCED. CAR ALSO HAD WHEEL ALIGNMENT , AS OF 11/25/2011 WITH 15,000 MILES THE TIRES ARE ALMOST BALDED IN THE FRONT AND NOT MUCH TREAD LIFE IN THE REAR , AS PER THE LINCOLN PENNY TEST. THESE TIRES WERE INSTALLED ON A 2000 CAMRY, HAVE REPLACED THESE TIRES WITH BF GOODRICH ADVANTAGE T/A , FEEL MUCH SAFER. *KB
DRIVING 70MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, I ACCELERATED SLIGHTLY TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE ACCELERATOR GOT STUCK AND THE SPEED KEPT INCREASING. I TRIED APPLYING THE BRAKES, BUT THE CAR STARTED TO LOSE CONTROL. I SWERVED AROUND CARS AND TRIED TO MANEUVER TO AN EXIT RAMP. THE CAR WAS NOW GOING 95 MPH. I WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE EXIT AND THE CAR HIT THE GUARD RAILS AND FLIPPED OVER. *TT

THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO PERSONAL INJURY AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE RESIDENCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
MY CAMRY HAS AN ADDED SPOILER, NOT SURE WEATHER IT WAS FACTORY OR DEALER INSTALLED. THE BRAKE LIGHT THAT IS NORMALLY IN THE REAR WINDOW WAS LEFT HANGING IN THE TRUNK AS IT WAS SUPERSEDED BY THE ONE IN THE SPOILER. THE BULB WAS LEFT INSTALLED AS IT CAUSED A BRAKE LIGHT FAULT ON THE DASH WHEN DISCONNECTED. LAST WEEK WHEN I HAD A FULL TRUNK WE STARTED TO SMELL SMOKE AND COULD NOT FIGURE WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. WE FOUND THAT A CARDBOARD BOX IN THE TRUNK HAD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE UNUSED BULB WHICH HAD BURNED A HOLE THROUGH THE BOX WHEN BRAKING ,BUT FORTUNATELY IT DID NOT IGNITE. I WILL CONTACT THE DEALER TOMORROW TO SEE IF THEY CAN RELOCATE THE BULB TO A SAFE LOCATION. *TT
MY 2000 CAMRY IS ALSO IN NEED OF A REPLACEMENT CHARCOAL CANISTER FOR THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS BECAUSE OF IT. I DO NOT WISH TO PAY THE $400 TO HAVE IT REPLACED WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING JUST FINE. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF EARLY 2000'S CAMRYS. *TR

THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WHILE MAKING A TURN, AS A RESULT THE VEHICLE COASTED WHILE THE RPMS INCREASED EXCESSIVELY AND THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED REPEATEDLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE OWNERS HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VIN DID NOT QUALIFY FOR RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 01V012000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 136,000.
ON TUESDAY, 7/12/2011, I NEEDED TO HAVE MY 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY INSPECTED TO GET THE RENEWAL STICKER. I TOOK THE CAR TO R&D AUTOMOTIVE HERE IN ASHEBORO BECAUSE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON. TWO OF THE CODES WOULD NOT CLEAR. THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM CANISTER AT A COST OF $300.00, NOT INCLUDING LABOR, IN ORDER FOR THE CAR TO PASS INSPECTION. I HAVE FOUND ONLINE THAT TOYOTA HAS HAD/IS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THESE CANISTERS. THEREFORE, I REQUEST TO BE REIMBURSED $300 FOR THIS CANISTER.

THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN AND CRASHED INTO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO PERSONAL INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE FRONT END AREA SUSTAINED SEVERE DAMAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE DEFECT AND THEY INFORMED THERE WAS NOT A RECALL PERTAINING TO THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 199,000. JS

ALSO, THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED, SHE WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE STEERING OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE. TOYOTA WHEEL STUDS STRETCHING AND BREAKING OFF WHILE DRIVING.I WORK IN THE AUTOMOTIVE FIELD AND HAVE ENCOUNTERED MANY TIMES WHERE TOYOTA WHEEL STUDS WILL NOT TORQUE PROPERLY. WHEN USING A TORQUE WRENCH TO TIGHTEN THE NUTS SOMETIMES THEY WILL NOT CLICK. IF YOU CONTINUE THE STUD SNAPS IN HALF AND THE LUG NUT SPINS RIGHT OUT. THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE THE METAL THE STUD IS MADE OF IS INFERIOR. I HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN WHILE THE CAR WAS IN USE MONTHS AFTER SERVICE AND RESULTING IN A WHEEL OFF SITUATION. TOYOTA DEALER DENIES THERE IS ANY PROBLEM BUT IF HAVE SEEN THIS AT LEAST A HUNDRED TIMES. I HAVE ASKED OTHER SHOPS IF THEY HAVE ENCOUNTERED THIS AND HAVE BEEN TOLD YES. I HAVE HAD TOYOTAS IN VARIOUS MODELS FROM MODEL YEAR 2000 TO PRESENT. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS BEFORE MORE ACCIDENTS AND TRAGEDIES HAPPEN FROM THIS. WHEEL STUDS SHOULD NOT SNAP OFF SO EASILY AND THIS WILL END UP KILLING PEOPLE(IT PROBABLY HAS). DURING NORMAL USE, THE BOLT ATTACHING THE SEAT BACK OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT TO SEAT BASE FELL OUT. THE BOLT THREADS SHOWED SIGNS OF WEAR AND DAMAGE AND WAS FOUND IN THE BACK SEAT FOOT WELL. THE CONDITION WAS DISCOVERED BECAUSE THE SEAT BACK WAS LOOSE. *TR

I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY. LAST WEEKEND, WHEN I RETURNED FROM A SHORT GROCERY TRIP, I FOUND THAT MY CAR ALTERNATOR BELT WAS RUNNING EVEN THOUGH I HAD SHUT OFF THE CAR AND HAD THE KEYS WITH ME. THIS WAS VERY SCARY. NOW I HAVE TO MANUALLY MAKE SURE THAT THE CAR IS ACTUALLY OFF EVEN AFTER I TURN IT OFF. *TR

THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED A REPRESENTATIVE WOULD INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 69,000.
IN A FRONT END COLLISION AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. CAR DEMOLISHED 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA. *TR
I HAVE FOLLOWED ALL MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS ON MY 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY AND RECENTLY THE ENGINE BLEW ON A TRIP TO THE BEACH. I WAS PASSING A SLOW MOVING VEHICLE ON THE ALLIGATOR RIVER BRIDGE ABOUT 28 MILES FROM NAGS HEAD, NC. AT THE TIME I DID NOT OBSERVE ANY RED LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD INDICATING A PROBLEM. I HEARD A LOUD BANG, THEN THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR WAS MAKING A FUNNY NOISE. I COULD NOT STOP ON THE BRIDGE SO I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER WHEN I LEFT THE BRIDGE. THE FIRST THING I CHECKED WAS THE ENGINE OIL. IT WAS COMPLETELY DRY. I FOUND A HOUSE NEARBY AND THEY GAVE ME TWO QUARTS OF OIL TO PUT IN THE CAR. THEY TOLD ME A GAS STATION WAS 15 MILES AWAY. THE CAR RAN FINE BELOW 35 MPH AND MADE A LITTLE NOISE. ABOVE 35MPH IT MADE A LOUD NOISE AND THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. I MADE IT TO NAGS HEAD AND THE NEXT DAY I TOOK THE CAR TO A CAR REPAIR CENTER. THEY NOTIFIED ME AFTERWARDS THAT THE ENGINE WAS BLOWN AND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS COMPLETELY FILLED WITH A THICK SLUDGE. I HAVE READ THE PAST INFORMATION ON THESE PROBLEMS AND BELIEVE IT WAS DUE TO AN ENGINE SLUDGE BUILD UP. I WAS ALSO AMAZED THAT I DID NOT SEE ANY OIL WARNING LIGHT PRIOR TO THE PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE THE MANUFACTURER TO CORRECT BY REPLACING OR REBUILDING THE ENGINE. *TR
WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES TO MY WELL-MAINTAINED 2000 CAMRY V6 WITH 88,000 MILES ON IT, THE CAR OFTEN SHUDDERS AND VIBRATES JUST BEFORE IT COMES TO A STOP. I USUALLY HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO ELIMINATE THE VIBRATION, BUT THAT IS A VERY UNSAFE TACTIC. THE DEALER REPLACED A WHEEL BEARING BUT THAT HAD NO EFFECT. NOW THE DEALER THINKS THAT THE SHUDDER/VIBRATION PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY THE TRANSMISSION AND IT HAS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $5000-$6000, WHICH IS ABOUT TWICE WHAT THE CAR IS WORTH. IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD FAIL SO EARLY UNLESS IT WAS DEFECTIVE. SINCE THE PROBLEM OCCURS DURING BRAKING, IT CLEARLY IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *TR
ON JUNE 12, 2010, MY TOYOTA CAMRY (YR 2000, 4 CYL, CE) MADE A STRANGE SOUND FROM THE ENGINE AT 60-70 MPH ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. AFTER ANOTHER 30 MIN OF STRANGE SOUND COMING OUT FROM THE ENGINE, THE ENGINE BELOW STARTED TO MAKE LOUD CRANKING SOUND. I PULLED IN TO THE SERVICE ROAD OF THE HIGHWAY AND AFTER A FEW MORE CRANKING SOUND, THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DISABLED. I CALLED THE POLICE TO GET IT TOWED TO A NEARBY TOWN. ON JUNE 14, I ARRANGED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED BACK TO MY HOMETOWN 120 MILES AWAY. THE TOYOTA DEALER INSPECTED THE CAR AND SAID THAT THE DIFFERENTIAL PART OF THE TRANSMISSION WAS TOTALLY DAMAGED. THE SERVICE PERSON SAID THAT IT IS OUT OF ORDINARY FOR A CAR OF THIS TYPE AND MILEAGE TO HAVE TRANSMISSION BREAKDOWN. I HAVE KEPT THE CAR UNDER REGULAR MAINTENANCE EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN 1999. THIS TRANSMISSION BREAKDOWN OCCURRED AT 72,000 MILES AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS SERVICED FOR A LEAK AT 66,000 MILE AT THE SAME TOYOTA DEALER. I SUSPECT MY TOYOTA CAMRY HAD PRE-EXISTING MANUFACTURING DEFECTS IN THE TRANSMISSION THAT CAUSED THIS CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION BREAKDOWN PROBLEM. IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE STARTER REMAINED ENGAGED WHEN THE CONTACT SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND THE STARTED NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED IT WAS APPARENT THAT TOYOTA KNEW ABOUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL PROBLEM AS EARLY AS JULY 2009 AS THE OWNERS MANUAL STATED TO CHECK THE PEDAL. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN JULY 2009 IT SEEMED AS THOUGH TOYOTA FAILED TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM EVEN THEN. *JB
THIS ITEM IS NOT A TOTAL FAILURE YET BUT IS HEADED IN THAT DIRECTION. THE POWER STEERING HOSE IS LEAKING FLUID WHERE IT JOINS THE RACK AND PINION STEERING ASSEMBLY. WHEN THE FLUID ALL LEAKS OUT I WILL HAVE NO POWER ASSIST IN MY STEERING AND IT COULD COME AT ANY MOMENT. MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER ( DEL TOYOTA IN THORNDALE, PA) REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO ME WHILE THIS CAR WAS BEING SERVICED FOR AN OIL CHANGE. I HAVE NOT HAD IT REPAIRED YET. A NEIGHBOR OF MINE TOLD ME THAT HE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS TOYOTA AVALON WHICH WAS A COUPLE OF YEARS OLDER THAN MY CAR. I AM REPORTING THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE MAYBE TOYOTAS IN MY AGE REGION ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING THIS SAME PROBLEM AND TOYOTA IS NOT ADMITTING TO A COMPONENT WEAKNESS IN THE POWER STEERING AREA AND MIGHT EVENTUALLY AGREE TO FIX IT. ON SUNDAY FEBRUARY 21, 2010 MY DAUGHTER WHO WAS DRIVING HER TOYOTA CAMRY 2000 MODEL SEES HER BATTERY INDICATOR LIGHT GO ON WITHOUT WARNING. THEN THE CAR STOPPED COMPLETELY AND STARTED TO SMOKE OUT FROM THE ENGINE. THE NECESSARY EMERGENCY CREWS HAD TO SHUT DOWN THE SURROUNDING RESIDENTIAL ROADS AND THE 2 GASOLINE STATIONS THAT THIS EVENT HAD OCCURRED OUTSIDE OF AND WE WERE ALL LUCKY THAT THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES. *TR

I DRIVE A 2000 TOYOTA CAMRY, AND HAVE HAD A FEW INCIDENTS PREVIOUSLY, DURING THE WINTER MONTHS OF 2008-09. THIS CONCERN NEVER HAPPENS DURING WARMER MONTHS. IT HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE SAME DAY ON FEBRUARY 3, 2010: WHEN APPROACHING A T-INTERSECTION OF SMALLER HIGHWAYS, WHEN I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT CONTROLLED 4-WAY INTERSECTION IN THE TOWN OF NEWTON, IA, AND AS I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO TURN OFF THE MAIN STREET INTO A PARKING LOT. I HAVE NOT REAR-ENDED ANYONE OR HIT ANY PEDESTRIANS, BUT THAT IS A DEFINITE POSSIBILITY. I STARTED RESEARCHING ONLINE TO SEE IF OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND DISCOVERED THAT SOME TOYOTA MODELS IN THE YEARS 2007-2010 HAVE BEEN RECALLED DUE TO A VERY SIMILAR PROBLEM, WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA OF DES MOINES, I WAS TOLD THAT IT COULD NOT BE THE SAME PROBLEM, SINCE THE BRAKE SYSTEM USED IN 2000 IS DIFFERENT FROM THAT IN THE RECALL YEARS. THEY SAID I COULD MAYBE USE A NEW OIL CAP AND PERHAPS USE A NEW BELT BUT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON AGAIN. (I BELIEVE THEY DISCONNECTED IT.) WHEN MY ENGINE BLEW IN DEC. 2009, I HAD IT TOWED TO TOYOTA. THEY INFORMED ME MY OIL HAD GELLED AND IT WOULD BE ABOUT $5,000 TO FIX IT. I TOLD THEM I GOT MY OIL CHANGED EVERY 3 TO 4 THOUSAND MILES. I DID NOT WAIT TILL THE 5,000 MILE MARK LIKE IT SAID TO IN MY TOYOTA HANDBOOK. THEY SAID SOMETIMES IT JUST HAPPENS MADAM. TOYOTA REFUSED TO PAY TO FIX IT. *TR

I IMMEDIATELY PULLED ONTO SIDE STREET, SHUT OFF CAR, GRABBED PURSE AND KEYS, AND RAN. PERSON IN STREET TOLD ME CAR WAS ON FIRE, WHICH I HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO SEE, BECAUSE THE FLAMES WERE POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE ENGINE ONTO THE STREET. I RAN AND CALLED 911 FROM CELL PHONE. TWO FIRE TRUCKS CAME WITHIN 5 MINUTES, AND IT TOOK THEM 20 MINUTES TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. THE ENGINE WAS TOTALLY MELTED DOWN. I COULD HAVE DIED AS A RESULT OF FUMES OR BEING BURNED AND WAS LUCKY I WASN'T ON A HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEEDS. *TR
