MY 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY V6 XLE HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH STUTTERING AS THOUGH THE TRANSMISSION, ENGINE OR COMPUTER IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. FOUR DIFFERENT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS HAVE LOOKED AT THE CAR AND THEIR ONLY STATEMENT IS THAT IF THE ENGINE LIGHT DOESN'T COME ON, THEY CAN'T DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. A NOW INDEPENDENT, FORMER TOYOTA MECHANIC DID OBSERVE THE PROBLEM AND CAN'T DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM WITH A COMPUTER. I WAS TREATED WITH ARROGANT DENIAL BY CUSTOMER SERVICE AT TOYOTA AND THEY BLACKMARKED ME ON THEIR SYSTEM-WIDE COMPUTER HISTORY. I DID LEARN THAT ONE PROBLEM WAS A RECALL PUBLICATION 3 MONTHS BEFORE I BOUGHT MY CAR THAT SAID THE COMPUTER NEEDED REPROGRAMMED. NONE OF THESE DEALERSHIPS KNEW THIS AND TOYOTA'S "ROMAN" IN CUSTOMER SERVICE DENIED ME ANY REIMBURSEMENT ABOUT THE REPROGRAMMING EVEN THOUGH I WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ENGINE STUTTERING OR MISSING SINCE ABOUT ONE MONTH AFTER NEW PURCHASE TO THE PRESENT. THIS IS THE COMPANY DENIAL AND ARROGANCE THAT THE CONGRESS AND INVESTIGATORS ARE COMING UP AGAINST. TOYOTA JUST WON'T ACCEPT THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MY CAR THAT HAS PERSISTED SINCE A MONTH AFTER NOVEMBER 2002 PURCHASE. NOW I GET EMAILS CALLING ME "FRIEND" FROM THEM WANTING MY BUSINESS AND SERVICE. I JUST WANT MY CAR TO RUN CORRECTLY AND FEAR THAT MY TRANSMISSION, ENGINE OR COMPUTER PROGRAM IS A FORERUNNER OF THE PROBLEMS COMING TO LIGHT LATELY BEFORE CONGRESS. *TR
DT: 2002 TOYOTA RUNNER. THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FOR LOWER BALL JOINT. THE CONSUMER STATED THE WHEELS WERE CUTTING THE TIRES ON FRONT WHERE LOWER BALL JOINT WAS LOCATED. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED TOYOTA, WHO SAID IT IS NOT RELATED TO LOWER BALL JOINT, AND THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE FOR THE CONSUMER. THIS HAS BEING HAPPENING SINCE THE CONSUMER BOUGHT VEHICLE. IT HAS 30,000 MILES , AND NEEDED NEW TIRES.*AK
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY A DEER COME OUT ON ROAD, VEHICLE HIT WAS INVOLVED IN COLLISION WITH ANIMAL, FRONT END OF VEHICLE IS DEMOLISHED, AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DEALER NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. TS
WHILE TRAVELING ON INDIAN HEAD HIGHWAY, CONSUMER SWERVED TO AVOID A DEER, INSTEAD SWERVED TO THE RIGHT/LOST CONTROL AND HIT A GUARD RAIL. UPON IMPACT, FRONT AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY, DRIVER SUFFERED INJURIES, AND VEHICLE WAS DEMOLISHED. IN ADDITION, THERE WAS A SULFUR-LIKE OR ROTTON EGG ODOR COMING FROM EXHAUST SYSTEM. ALSO, BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR FOLLOWING PROBLEMS: POOR ALIGNMENT/ENGINE CHECK LIGHT/FUEL INJECTOR/ SPARK PLUGS, MIRRORS, AND STRUCTURAL DEFECTS *AK

THE 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY ACHIEVED ONLY A TWO STAR NHTSA SIDE IMPACT RATING FOR THE FRONT DOORS (FIVE FOR THE REAR). A TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE AT THE 2002 INTERNATIONAL CAR SHOW IN SAN FRANCISCO SAID THIS WAS DUE TO A STRUCTURAL DESIGN FLAW WHICH WAS BEING CORRECTED ASAP FOR THE 2003 MODELS. THE FIX RESULTED IN A THREE STAR RATING. WILL THE CORRECTION BE RETROFITTED ON THE OLDER MODELS OR WILL PASSENGER SAFETY CONTINUE TO BE COMPROMISED BECAUSE OF THIS FLAW? *LA

WHEN THE BRAKES WERE PRESSED WHILE DRIVING ON WET ROADS THE VEHICLE SLID SEVERELY. THIS WAS CAUSED BY THE TIRE PER THE DEALERSHIP. *NLM
ON 11-14-02 MY WIFE WAS SETTING AT A RED LIGHT AND WAS HIT FROM BEHIND BY A SUV TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, CAUSING $15000.00 IN DAMAGE. THE AIR BAG(S) DID NOT DEPLOY. *AK

CONSUMER STATES WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY WITH CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED. ATTEMPTED TO DISENGAGE BY DEPRESSING BRAKE PEDAL TO NO AVAIL. CONSUMER HAD TO SWERVE VEHICLE THROUGH TRAFFIC TO AVOID A COLLISION. AS A RESULT THE FRONT PASSENGER WHEEL CAME OFF SLOWING CAR DOWN ENOUGH FOR CONSUMER TO DOWNSHIFT GEARS. TS
ON NOV. 11, 2010 WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 CAMRY, SUDDENLY THE ENGINE ACCELERATE, NOT BRAKES FUNCTION AT THAT TIME THEN I TOOK A SLOPE WERE VEHICLE FINALLY STOP AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF. CALL THE AUTO-DEALER FOR APPOINTMENT TO CHECK FAILURE. MEANWHILE ONLY VEHICLE PROBLEM WAS THE REVOLUTIONS (RPM), TOO LOW ON NOV. 24, 2010 TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE AUTO-DEALER WERE THE MECHANIC STATED, FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE THROTTLE. REPLACEMENT BY A NEW THROTTLE. *TR
CONSUMER STATES WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE VEHICLE PULLED VIOLENTLY TO THE LEFT CAUSING LOST OF CONTROL AND RESULTING IN A ACCIDENT. TS
ON THE DATE BELOW, I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WHEN MY BRAND NEW CAMRY WENT OUT OF CONTROL AND SPED UP, SENDING THE CAR THROUGH A GUARD RAIL. MY CAR ENDED UP ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY GOING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I HAVE A PERFECT DRIVING RECORD, AND HAVE NEVER EVEN HAD A TICKET. I BELIEVE THAT MY CAR HAD THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM THAT I'VE BEEN READING ABOUT. I HAD CONTACTED TOYOTA WHEN THE ACCIDENT FIRST OCCURRED. THEY SENT SOMEONE OUT WHO CHECKED THE TIRES AND THE STEERING, AND A FEW MINOR THINGS. NO ONE TESTED ANYTHING TO DO WITH ACCELERATION. THE CAR WAS TOTALED, AND I WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO A TRAUMA CENTER, WHERE I WAS HOSPITALIZED. I AM NOW DRIVING A 2003 CAMRY, AND I FEEL LIKE I'M DRIVING A TIME BOMB, SINCE I READ THAT THE PROBLEM MAY EXIST IN BOTH THE 02 AND 03 MODELS. *AK SEE VOQ 10063318. *DSY
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. DRIVER LOST CONTROL AND HIT A GUARD RAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *AK THE DRIVER SUFFERED FROM POST CONCUSSION SYNDROME AND STILL EXPERIENCES DIZZINESS, PROBLEMS WITH BALANCE, TREMORS, HEADACHES, NECK AND BACK PAIN AND MEMORY LOSS. THE CONSUMER IS STILL UNDER THE CARE OF SEVERAL MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND CONTINUES TO UNDERGO TESTING. *NM SEE VOQ 10062561. *DSY
TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 50 MPH, THE DRIVER STATED THAT SHE SWITCHED LANES AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK AND ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. THE VEHICLE MADE A U-TURN ON ITS OWN AND THE DRIVER CRASHED INTO 2 GUARD RAILS. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE DRIVER WAS ALSO INJURED AND TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE HOSPITAL. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY PURCHASED BRAND NEW. WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEEDS OF 50 MPH, SHE SWITCH LANES TO AVOID A CONSTRUCTION AREA. THE VEHICLE THEN ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING OR DRIVER INTENT. SHE ATTEMPTED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKES, HOWEVER THE BRAKES WERE NOT RESPONSIVE TO DRIVER INPUT. SHE ALSO ATTEMPTED TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE BUT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS ALSO NON-RESPONSIVE AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE THEN SWAYED TO THE LEFT AND CRASHED THROUGH A METAL GUARD RAIL. THE CONTACT WAS HOSPITALIZED AND SUFFERED NECK INJURIES .THE SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER. WE PURCHASED A NEW 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY 7-16-02 AND THE ACCELERATOR SURGED WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY 11-9-02 CAUSING IT TO STRIKE ANOTHER PARKED VEHICLE AND STOPPED 6 INCHES FROM STRIKING A HOUSE. THE TOTAL DAMAGE WAS ALMOST $10,000. WE TOLD THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID IT HAD TO BE AN OPERATOR ERROR BECAUSE THEY NEVER HEARD OF ANOTHER ACCELERATION PROBLEM. THE DEALER NEVER OFFERED TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND THEY TOLD US TO GO TO A DEALER CLOSER TO OUR HOME IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN. IN 2004 WE READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WITH THE CAMRY AND LEXUS VEHICLES. WE LOOKED ON THE NHTSA WEB SITE AND UNDER SPEED CONTROL COMPLAINTS WE SAW A COMPLAINT OF A 2002 OR 2003 CAMRY ACCIDENT EXACTLY LIKE THE ONE WE EXPERIENCED. WE SENT A LETTER TO TOYOTA INC. 4-18-04 AT P.O. BOX 2991 IN TORRANCE, CA 90509 AND TOYOTA NEVER RESPONDED BACK. WE NEVER EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN THE 2002 CAMRY AGAIN AND EVENTUALLY SOLD IT. WE HAVE A COPY OF THE TOYOTA LETTER. THERE WAS A NEIGHBOR THAT WITNESSED THE ACCIDENT AND SAID THE CAMRY MADE A LOUD ACCELERATION NOISE. MY WIFE PUT BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES TO BRING IT TO A STOP. *TR

I BOUGHT MY 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY AS A USED CERTIFIED VEHICLE FROM A TOYOTA DEALER. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO KEEP IT ON THE HIGHWAY. TS

ATTEMPTED TO BRING VEHICLE TO STOP BY APPLYING THE BRAKES WHEN PARKING INTO A PARKING SPOT AFTER MAKING A RIGHT TURN. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT COME TO A STOP, RESULTING INTO A HEAD ON COLLISION WITH A BUILDING'S OUTER WALL. DT
WHILE STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT THE ENGINE REVVED, FOLLOWED BY SUDDEN ACCELERATION. THE CONSUMER PROCEEDED TO SLAM ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE ACCELERATION, BUT IT FAILED TO DO SO. VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING BY ITSELF. DEALERSHIP WAS CONTACTED, BUT PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. *AK *NM

CONSUMER COMPLAINED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DESIGNED TOO BIG. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS CONSUMER ATTEMPTED TO MOVE FOOT FROM THE GAS TO THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN THEIR SHOE SOLE GOT CAUGHT UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS CAUSED THE CONSUMER TO APPLY THE GAS PEDAL INADVERTENTLY. *AK *MR

WHEN DRIVING MY CAMRY AT A MAINTAINED SPEED THE TRANSMISSION APPEARS TO ABRUPTLY DOWNSHIFT AND THEN UPSHIFT CAUSING THE CAR TO BOUNCE FORWARD AND THEN BACKWARDS. THIS PROBLEM USUALLY OCCURS WHILE DRIVING DOWN HILLS BUT WILL SOMETIMES HAPPEN ON LEVEL ROADS. THE CAR WILL SOMTIMES DO THIS UP TO 6 TIMES BEFORE GOING BACK TO DRIVING LIKE NORMAL. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS WITH THE CAR IN EITHER OVER-DRIVE OR DRIVE. TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED ARE UNWILLING TO DO ANYTHING FURTHER TO ALLEVIATE THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY FEEL IT IS A "NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC" OF THE VEHICLE.
UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE, MY WIFE'S VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO MAXIMUM SPEED. THE CAR JUMPED OVER THE PARKING CURB AND SHE SWERVED TO MISS A BUILDING. SHE CLIPPED TWO CARS IN PASSING THEM, SWERVED AGAIN INTO AN EMPY PARKILNG SPOT AND THE VEHICLE TIPPED OVER. CAR WAS TOTALED. NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT MY WIFE SUSTAINED SOME BRUISES AND GLASS SHARDS IN THE EYES. LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER LOOKED AT THE WRECK, RAN SOME ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS, BUT SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY MALFUNCTION.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS ATTEMPTING TO EXIT A CAR WASH AT 5 MPH. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING IT TO CRASH INTO A POLE. NO ONE WAS INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8000.
CONSUMER WAS PARKING THE VEHICLE WITH HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THIS RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT LOCATE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM.*JB
EVERY SINCE THE PURCHASE OF MY NEW CAMRY, THE CAR HAS EMITTED A SULFUR/ROTTEN EGG SMELL. THE SMELL COMES FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR AND, WHEN THE DEFROSTER IS ON, IT SUCKS THE TERRIBLE SMELL RIGHT INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. (NOTE TO NHTSA: YOU HAVE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ALREADY LISTED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM UNDER BOTH "CATALYTIC CONVERTER," "EXHAUST SYSTEM," AND "DEFROSTER"...THEY ARE ALL THE SAME THING.) I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THEY HAVE TOLD ME: 1) THAT IT IS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, 2) THAT IT HAPPENS IN ABOUT 70 OF EVERY 3,000+ CARS PRODUCED, 3) THAT I SHOULD TRY A NEW GASOLINE AND 4) THAT IT WILL GO AWAY AT AROUND 6,000 MILES. I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL NEW GASOLINES AND AM CURRENTLY AT 5,000 MILES WITH NO CHANGE TO THE SMELL. I WILL TAKE MY CAR INTO THE SHOP TWO MORE TIMES FOR THE SAME COMPLAINT AND THEN WILL ATTEMPT TO INVOKE THE LEMON LAW IN OREGON.
ON TWO OCCASION SINCE OWNING THIS VEHICLE THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURED. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (70 MPH) IF THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED STRONG TO AVOID A COLLISION YOU LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE LAST INCIDENT OCCURED WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING. THE VEHICLE SPUN OUT OF CONTROL 180 DEGREES ACROSS THREE LANES OF FREEWAY AND ENDED UP FACING ONCOMING TRAFFIC ON THE SHOULDER. WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES IN THE DESCRIBED FASHION THE REAR OF THE CAR BEGINS TO SKID INTO AN OUT OF CONTROL SITUATION. DT
SMELLED GAS FUMES, DEALER BASICALLY TOLD US NOT TO WORRY. WHEN DRIVING ALONG TO TAKE VEHICLE TO DEALER IT CAUGHT ON FIRE AND THEN EXPLODED. VEHICLE ONLY 1 MONTH OLD AND I HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE A WEEK AFTER PURCHASE. MR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR ROUTINE INSPECTION AND THE MECHANIC NOTICED ALL 4 TIRES WERE WEARING ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, SOME PIECES OF PLY WERE STICKING THROUGH. *AK ALL FOUR TIRES WERE ROTATED TWICE AND THE AIR PRESSURE WAS GOOD. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BRAKE POWER ASSIST, THE MASTER CYLINDER, BLEED THE BRAKE LINES, AND ADJUSTED THE LINKAGE ON THAT CAR BUT THE PROBLEM REMAINS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON A BUMPY ROAD SURFACES. THERE WAS PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, FOLLOWED BY A SUDDEN ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS; AND CONTINUED IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER ENCOUNTERING A ROUGH ROAD SURFACE, BUMPS AND ICE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED PROPERLY AND WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

MY 2002 CAMRY, PURCHASED NEW, DID NOT STOP WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES WHILE RIDING OVER ROAD BUMPS AND ENGAGING THE ANTILOCK BRAKES. I HAD A DEALER CHECK FOR PROPER ANTILOCK BRAKE FUNCTION IN 2002 AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. THIS CONDITION IS SIMILAR TO THAT DESCRIBED FOR THE TOYOTA PRIUS. *TR
DRIVER NOTICED THAT DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR HANDLE WAS INOPERATIVE. DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE HANDLE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACED IT. A FEW YEARS LATER THE PROBLEM RECURRED WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR. THEN, MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE HANDLE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
