DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH ON RAINY, WET AND SLIPPERY CONDITIONS, AN APPROACHING VEHICLE STRUCK THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE SPUN AND WAS THROWN ONTO THE CURB. THE CONTACT LOST CONSCIOUSNESS FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. A SEATBELT WAS WORN AND NONE OF THE 6 AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGNALS PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS PARTIALLY WRECKED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, AND A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND PROMISED A CALL BACK WITHIN 2 BUSINESS DAYS. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA THAT THE FORCE WAS NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY. UPDATED 10/30/06. *JB
TOYOTA FLY BY WIRE TRANSMISSION HESITATION PROBLEM. SPECIFICALLY A 2006 HIGHLANDER- HESITATION FROM STOP OR SLOW SPEED. COMPLAINT ACROSS ALL MODELS AND SEVERAL YEARS. THE APPROXIMATE INCIDENT DATE MEANS NOTHING LT IS AND CONTINUES TO BE A PROBLEM SINCE THE "FLY OR DRIVE BY WIRE" SYSTEM ORIGINATED. DEALER STATES THIS IS THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO OPERATE. - AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN OR HAVE THEY ALREADY HAPPENED? WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO INITIATE A FIX. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE RELATED TO THE FIVE SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE INTERNET IS FULL OF THIS TYPE OF COMPLAINT. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE MAKING AN EMERGENCY STOP AFTER TRAVELING 25 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE STEERING REMAINED LOCKED AFTER THE COLLISION, ALTHOUGH THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT DAMAGE TO INTERFERE WITH THE WHEELS. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE SERVICE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND AN INVESTIGATOR WAS SENT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. UPDATED 10/30/06. *JB *NM THE CONSUMER THE ECU HAS BEE REPLACED THREE TIMES. THE LAST REPLACEMENT OCCURRED ON FEBRUARY 9, 2009. THE CONSUMER ALSO REMEMBERED WHEN HE SLAMMED ON THE BRAKE, THERE WAS NO PULSATING SENSATION IN THE PEDAL AS THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WITH A VEHICLE THAT HAS ABS. UPDATED 04/08/10.*JB
2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID HAD PROBLEMS WITH BRAKES AND STEERING GOING OUT AT THE SAME TIME**NAR** THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. WHEN THE CONSUMER SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES THERE WAS NO PULSATING SENSATION, AS EXPECTED WHEN THE ABS ACTIVATES. THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THE BRAKES AND STEERING FAILED AT THE SAME TIME. THE VEHICLE COASTED ABOUT 150 FEET UNTIL IT IMPACTED ANOTHER VEHICLE.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH A METAL SHEET HIT THE GAS TANK CREATING A HOLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE GAS TANK WAS OBSERVED TO BE 3/4 COVERED IN METAL AND 1/4 COVERED IN PLASTIC. THE HOLE WAS CREATED IN THE PLASTIC PORTION OF THE GAS TANK. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE GAS TANK MET THE NHTSA FMVSS THEREFORE REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO ALERTED. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE BRAKE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED AT 5 MPH INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD AND JUMPED OVER A CURB WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT SHIFTED THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED BACKWARDS WHILE CONSTANT BRAKE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED. THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO ANOTHER PARKED VEHICLE WHERE IT CAME TO A FINAL STOP. THE CONTACT WAS WEARING A SEAT BELT, BUT NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THERE WAS MODERATE DAMAGE TO THE REAR BUMPER AND RIGHT PASSENGER SIDE PANEL OF THE VEHICLE. THE POLICE WERE ALERTED AND A REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.
2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE VEHICLE STALLS DUE TO A ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WHICH DRAINS THE BATTERY. *MC THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED 6 TIMES AND THE BATTERY HAS BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES. THE DEALER DID FIND AN INTERNAL SHORT BY THE ENGINE AND THE THEFT DETERRENT SWITCH WAS REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO RECTIFY THE STALLING PROBLEM.*JB
2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER 3-3V-6 5 SPEED AUTO. VERY ERRATIC SHIFTING AND HESITATION WHEN AT SLOW SPEEDS. HAPPENED MOSTLY IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE CAR LURCHED FORWARD AND BRAKES NEEDED TO BE APPLIED MUCH HARDER THAN ONE WOULD LIKE. COULD NEVER BE SURE WHEN MERGING INTO TRAFFIC HOW THE CAR WILL RESPOND. VERY DANGEROUS. HAD A 2002 HIGHLANDER BEFORE THIS ONE AND HAD NO PROBLEMS. CAR HAS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALER 4 TIMES SINCE PURCHASE IN JULY 2006. EACH TIME I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR HAS TO ADJUST TO MY DRIVING STYLE. UNLESS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON THEY WON'T EVEN TRY TO FIX ANYTHING. I EVEN HAD THE REGIONAL REP DRIVE IT (5 MILES) AND PROCLAIM THE CAR TO BE NORMAL. IF THIS IS NORMAL, YOU CAN KEEP IT. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN THIS CAR. TOYOTA IS WAITING FOR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO OCCUR. I INTEND TO FILE A CLAIM WITH THE NJ LEMON LAW. *AK
ELECTRONIC PEDAL POSITION SENSOR DOES NOT RESPOND TO DRIVER INPUT IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS. THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION SHIFT RESPONSE BECOMES DELAYED FOR 2 OR MORE SECONDS, AND IN CERTAIN DRIVER SITUATIONS POSES A DANGER TO THE DRIVER AND OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. A SHIFT AND/OR ACCELERATION DELAY OCCURS WHEN FULL RAPID THROTTLE RESPONSE IS REQUIRED OR NEEDED IN CERTAIN TYPES OF TRAFFIC SCENARIOS SUCH AS ENTERING FREEWAYS , NEGOTIATING TRAFFIC , CHANGING LANES, STOP AND GO AND EMERGENCY TYPE BRAKING/ACCELERATION MANEUVERS. THE DEALER AND TOYOTA USA HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS BEHAVIOR, AND NO SUCH FIX HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED. I HAVE RECEIVED MANY DEALER/MFR.OPINIONS ON THIS . THE DEALER JUST SAYS THAT THERE IS NO INFORMATION FROM TOYOTA ON HOW TO ADJUST OR FIX THIS COMMON COMPLAINT. I AM NOT ALONE ON THIS. AND COMPLAINTS REGARDING DRIVEABILITY OF VEHICLE HAS BEEN WELL DOCUMENTED BY OWNERS OF MY2004-2007 HIGHLANDERS. *TR
2006-TOYOTA HIGHLANDER-3.3V-6 WITH 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ERRATIC SHIFTING AND HESITATION AT SLOW SPEED WHEN LETTING OFF ACCELERATOR AND THEN REAPPLYING TRANSMISSION. VEHICLE STAYS IN BETWEEN GEARS AND HESITATES. ONCE IT GETS INTO GEAR THE VEHICLE LUNGES FORWARD, MAKING IT NECESSARY TO APPLY THE BRAKES HARD. THIS IS PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. I GET NERVOUS WHEN TRYING TO MERGE INTO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW THE ACCELERATOR WILL RESPOND AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT. IT IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. I NOTIFIED TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME TO WORK THROUGH THE DEALER. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT. AFTER READING THE MANY POSTS ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM, IT SEEMS TOYOTA AND THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENTS ARE TELLING CUSTOMERS THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED TO ACT THIS WAY. THE DEALERSHIPS THAT TRY TO REPROGRAM THE CHIP THAT CONTROLS ACCELERATION ARE NOT HAVING ANY LUCK FIXING THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM RETURNS SOMETIMES WORSE THAN IT WAS BEFORE. AT PRESENT THERE IS NO RECALL AND NO TSB. THE 'FIX' SEEMS TO BE BASED ON EXPERIMENTATION NOT FACT. I WILL GIVE THE DEALER A CHANCE BUT I HAVE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD BEFORE. SINCE THERE IS NO FIX AND TOYOTA IS NOT WILLING TO ADMIT TO DEFECT, I FEAR I WILL BE FACING MANY VISITS TO THE DEALER GETTING A LOT OF LIP SERVICE WITHOUT ANY ACTION. I AM SURPRISED THAT TOYOTA, THE BEACON OF QUALITY, IS IGNORING THIS POTENTIALLY SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. LETS NOT WAIT FOR THE ACCIDENT TO SPURN A RECALL OR INVESTIGATION. HOW ABOUT CAR COMPANIES GET PROACTIVE FOR A CHANGE. *JB
WHEN I USE THE A/C AND TURN IT OFF A BAD ODOR COMES FROM THE VENT . THIS IS A NEW 2006 HIGHLANDER, THE NEXT DAY I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER HE SAID TAKE FOR SERVICE , THEY TOLD ME TO DRIVE IT FOR A FEW MORE DAYS . I PUT 1500 MILES AND THE ODOR IS STILL THERE . I TOOK IT FOR SERVICE AGAIN . THE MECHANIC SAID TO USE A DEODORIZER ON THE VENT. I AM NOT A SATISFIED CUSTOMER. I WANT THIS ISSUE RESOLVED. I PAID FOR THE HIGHLANDER NOT THE SMELL THAT CAME WITH IT. *NM
VEHICLE HAS ORIGINAL HEADLIGHTS THAT WERE IN IT WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR.THE BULBS ARE BURNING THE LENS OVER THE LIGHTS.I "DO NOT" DRIVE WITH THE HIGH BEAMS ON AS THE DEALERSHIP TRIED TO INSINUATE.NO DUMBASS DRIVES WITH THE HIGH BEAMS ON ALL THE TIME. TOYOTA CLAIMS BULBS ARE AN EXCLUSION ON THE WARRANTY.THIS IS A FACTORY DEFECT AND SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM.THEY WANT TO CHARGE THE PURCHASER TO REPLACE THE BULBS WHICH SHOW EVIDENCE OF OF DEFECT AS WELL AS THE LENS COVER.I WOULD LIKE TO SEE TOYOTA OR THE MANUFACTURER OF THE BULB REPLACE THESE ITEMS AT NO COST TO THE PURCHASER.EVEN IF THEY DON'T REPLACE THE LENS COVER AT LEAST REPLACE THE BULB WITH THE PROPER BULB.CAR HAS ALWAYS JERKED FROM THE TIME I PURCHASED IT.I THOUGHT IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION BUT TOYOTA CLAIMS THEY DIDN'T DETECT ANYTHING WHEN I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE FOR THIS ISSUE.

ALSO UNDER ACCELERATION IT SOMETIMES ACTS LIKE IT DON'T KNOW WHAT GEAR IT WANTS TO BE IN. FROM COMPLAINTS OF OTHER CUSTOMERS AND AFTER TALKING TO TECH. THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT WITH THIS ENGINE AND TRANS. PACKAGE SINCE 2004 AND STILL NO FIX. I WAS TOLD TOYOTA PROGRAMMED IT THIS WAY CAUSE THEY GOT THE BEST MPG, HECK WITH THE DRIVER HAVING COMPLETE CONTROL AND FEELING CONFIDENT THAT WHEN YOU PUSH THE ACCELERATOR IT'S GOING TO GO. *JB
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ON MY 2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER W/ 3.4 LITER ENGINE HAS HESITATION WHEN SHIFTING DOWN TO 2ND OR 1ST GEAR, E.G., STEPPING ON THE GAS FROM A COMPLETE STOP TO TURN AGAINST ON-COMING TRAFFIC. THERE IS A DISCONCERTING MOMENT OF HESITATION BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO ENGAGE. DEALER TOLD ME IT IS NORMAL DUE TO THE FLY-BY-WIRE TECHNOLOGY. I DON'T BELIEVE IT AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT IT'S SAFETY. I AM ALSO WORRIED THAT I WAITED THIS LONG TO BRING IT UP BECAUSE THE CAR HAS 35,550 MILES ON IT AND THE WARRANTY IS ABOUT TO RUN OUT. I HAVE HEARD THIS FROM OTHER HIGHLANDER OWNERS TOO. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULD GET 35 MILES PER GALLON IN THE CITY; HOWEVER, IT ONLY GETS 21 MILES. HE CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED TO CALL THE TOYOTA MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY APPRECIATED HIS INPUT AND COMMENTS. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 31,000.
DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG HAS TO BE REPLACED IN 3 MONTH OLD TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WARNING LIGHT DID ACTIVATE INDICATING PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP INDICATED UNTIL REPAIR IS DONE AIR BAG SHOULDN'T DEPLOY INADVERTENTLY BUT PROBABLY WON'T DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. *NM
TL* - THE CONTACT STATED THAT 2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER LOST POWER WHEN HE USED THE VEHICLE FOR TOWING. WEATHER CONDITIONS VARIED, ROAD CONDITIONS WERE PRIMARILY ICY, GRAVEL, AND DIRT. THE ONLY WAY HE COULD GET THE VEHICLE TO MOVE WAS BY UN-HITCHING THE TRAILER. THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THIS WAS THE WAY THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED, AND IT WILL LOSE POWER TO PROTECT THE VEHICLE IF THE LOAD WAS TOO HEAVY. THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AT 3,500 MILES AND AT 17,500 MILES. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS BEFORE OR AFTER POWER LOSS. THE VEHICLE STARTED UP AND DROVE NORMALLY ONCE THE TRAILER WAS UNHITCHED. TL- THE CALLER HAS A 20006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACTED THAT WHILE TRAVELING DONE THE DOWN THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING 55MPH AND THE VEHICLE COMPLEYELY SHUT DOWN. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON BEFORE THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN. THE DEALER STATED THAT NO PROBLEMS WERE FOUND WHEN A DIOGNOSTIC PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAD 63000 MILES AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE AND THOSE ARE ALSO THE CURRENT MILEAGE. RL
FIRST STARTUP IN MORNINGS. SOMETIMES VEHICLE FAILS TO START ON FIRST ATTEMPT. SECOND ATTEMPT IT STARTS BUT FOR SEVERAL MILES AFTER, A STRONG ODOR OF GAS IN CABIN AREA. MUST ROLL WINDOW DOWN TO ALLOW VENTILATION. WIFE FIRST COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND I ASSUMED IT WAS BECAUSE SHE WAS DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR WHILE TRYING TO START VEHICLE. IT WAS NOT UNTIL I ATTEMPTED ON SEVERAL OCCASION AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. *NM
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS NO HYDRAULIC PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE PEDAL TRAVELED TOO FAR INTO THE FLOORBOARD WHEN DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THAT THERE WAS EITHER AIR IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM OR A DEFECTIVE MASTER CYLINDER. THE PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE BRAKES WERE BLED TWICE BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BUT OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 150 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000.
TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID-I HAVE LOST ABS BRAKES, STABILITY CONTROL AND POWER STEERING ALONG WITH THE HYBRID ENGINE ON TWO OCCASIONS WITH MY 2 WEEK OLD 2006 HIGHLANDER. I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER TWICE-THE FIRST TIME THEY FOUND "MALFUNCTION CODES" AND "REBOOTED" THE COMPUTER AND TOLD ME IT WAS OPERATING AS "DESIGNED," ONLY TO HAPPEN AGAIN 2 DAYS LATER. CURRENTLY, THEY ARE REPLACING A COMPUTER. DATE OF INCIDENT AND PURCHASE OF VEHICLE IS ACTUALLY 2006 BUT IS NOT AN OPTION BELOW. I AM CONCERNED IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN AND RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT IN THE FUTURE. *JB
DT: CONSUMER WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT ON AUGUST 17, 2005 AND SIDE/CURTAIN AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. IT WAS SIDE IMPACT AT 45 MPH. HAD NOT CONTACTED TOYOTA AT THIS POINT. *AK

IN ADDITION, HE EXPERIENCED AN EXTRAORDINARY NOISE FROM THE FRONT BRAKES WHENEVER THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED.
