AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OR ACCELERATING, A SLIGHT PAUSE OR LOSS OF POWER IS NOTICEABLE. IT SEEMS AS IF FUEL IS CUT OFF OR ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE MAXIMUM ENGINE POWER TO MAINTAIN SPEEDS FOR VERY SHORT PERIODS OF TIME.
HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE MULTIPLES TIMES TO TOYOTA DEALERS LOOKING TO ADDRESS A FRONT SUSPENSION PROBLEM. IT FEELS LIKE THE STEERING WHEEL IS SHAKING A LITTLE BIT WHEN IS BEING DRIVEN AT SLOW SPEED OVER UNEVEN STREET PAVEMENT SURFACE (SMALL POTHOLES) IT FEELS SOMETHING IN THE SUSPENSION IS LOOSE AND IT WOBBLES FROM LEFT AND RIGHT. I ALWAYS FEEL IT ON THE STEERING WHEEL. THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE WHAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM ARGUING THEY DON'T FEEL ANY WOBBLING ON THE VEHICLE
WHILE DRIVING IN A CITY STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH I HAD MY WINDOW WIPERS ON DUE TO SOME POLLEN ON MY WINDSHIELD. WHILE WINDOW WIPERS WERE ENGAGED I APPROACH A DOWNWARD HILL AND HIT NOTING BUT SUN GLARE BLINDING ME I PUT MY BRAKES ON BUT BY THAT TIME MY SUV SLAMMED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM DID NOT ACTIVATE
BLUETOOTH DISCONNECTING
ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING DOWN A MAJOR HIGHWAY OUR HIGHLANDER HAS TOTALLY LOST ENGINE POWER; PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO COUGH AN SPUTTER; AND WE HAD TO GET OFF OF THE ROAD AND KILL THE ENGINE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE ENGINE WOULD RESTART. ONLY ONCE WAS THE DEALER ABLE TO PICK-UP ANY CODE OR REASON AND IT WAS NOTED TO HAVE BEEN AN ENGINE MISS, AND THE TECHNICIAN SAID IT MAY HAVE BEEN A BAD FUEL ISSUE. I AM SEEING RECALLS FOR 2018 & 2019 TOYOTA AND LEXUS VEHICLES DUE TO A FUEL PUMP ISSUE AND I AM WRITING BECAUSE I BELIEVE OUR 2017 HIGHLANDER MAY HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. ONE STRANGE CIRCUMSTANCE WITH ALL 4 TIMES IS THAT WE WERE CHANGING LANES TO THE LEFT, THERE WOULD BE A SHORT BEEP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND I AM ALSO WONDERING IF THE ISSUE COULD BE CAUSED BY ONE OF THE NEW SAFETY SENSORS. OUR LANE CHANGE SENSOR WAS NEVER ON, BUT OUR BLIND SPOT MONITOR (BSM) WAS ON AND AT ONE TIME THERE WAS A NOTICE TO A BSM ISSUE, BUT THE DEALER CANNOT FIND ANY ISSUES IN THE DIAGNOSTICS. THE FIRST 3 TIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD NOT COME BACK ON AFTER THE CAR RESTARTED AND THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND ANY CODES, BUT THE LAST TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON FOR 2 DAYS AND THAT IS WHEN THE DEALER DIAGNOSED AN ENGINE MISS. THIS LAST TIME MY WIFE HAD 18 WHEELERS ON BOTH SIDES OF HER AND ONE BEHIND HER. THANK GOD THE DRIVER BEHIND HER WAS PAYING ATTENTION.
29K ON THE CAR AND FOURTH TIME AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, THIS TIME THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION.
AT 62K MILES I NOTICED A LITTLE PINK ON GARAGE FLOOR AND HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND FOUND I HAD A INLET WATER THERMOSTATIC HOUSING LEAKING. HE INSTALLED NEW ONE AT MY COST. POWER TRAIN WARRANTY WAS UP TO 60K MILES. FOUND A FEW DAYS LATER STILL LEAKING AND THIS TIME WATER PUMP. COMBINED COST FOR 2 REPAIRS AT LOCAL TOYOTA WAS RIGHT AT $1600. I BOUGHT THIS NEW AND PRIOR TO THIS I HAVE HAD GREAT SERVICE FROM MY TOYOTAS. THOUGHT CORPORATE TOYOTA WOULD TAKE CARE OF THIS BUT NO WAY. I HAVE SPOKE TO SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS OF THIS YEAR INCLUDING RAV OWNERS AND THEY HAD SAME ISSUE. HOPEFULLY TOYOTA RECALLS THESE WATER PUMPS BECAUSE NO NEW CARS WATER PUMP SHOULD GO OUT LESS THAN 100K MILES, THIS VEHICLE COST ME $48K AND WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA YESTERDAY TO CHECK TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL THEY SAID NO BUT THERE WAS A CAMPAIGN FIX ON A OIL HOSE, EVEN THOUGH I WAS REGISTERED WITH THEM THEY DID NOT NOTIFY ME OF THIS CAMPAIGN. I WILL FILE COMPLAINTS WITH VARIOUS ADVOCATES FOR CONSUMERS, THIS IS VERY UNSATISFACTORY ESPECIALLY FOR TOYOTA AND MY WALLET. BOOH TOYOTA..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND HEAR A LOUD EXPLODING SOUND FROM MY VEHICLE. I THOUGHT SOMETHING EXTREMELY HEAVY WAS THROWN OR FELL ON MY CAR. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME, I FOUND A GAPING HOLE ON MY SUNROOF. THE GLASS WAS SHATTERED BUT THE OBJECT THAT "HIT" IT WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. AFTER CLOSELY EXAMINING IT, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT AN OBJECT HIT IT BASED OFF THE ANGLE THE SUNROOF METAL. THE METAL LOOKS LIKE THE EXPLOSION CAME FROM INWARD NOT OUTWARD.
THE BATTERY FAILED AFTER WE OWNED THE CAR FOR 2 YRS AND 11 MONTHS (MILEAGE ~44,000). THE REPLACEMENT BATTERY COST ABOUT $450 INCLUDING INSTALLATION. THIS IS EXCESSIVELY EARLY FAILURE, AND WE ARE OUT A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITH THIS NEW OF A VEHICLE. IT TOOK 1 MONTH TO GET THE REPLACEMENT BATTERY. ALSO EXCESSIVE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE WOULD VIOLENTLY SHAKE INTERMITTENTLY, LURCH AND ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING IN A PARKING LOT THE VEHICLE INADVERTENTLY ACCELERATED WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A CROSSWALK. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED DUE TO THE VEHICLE LURCHING AND SHAKING, SHE HAS SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HER TONGUE, NECK AND BACK. NO MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NEEDED. THE CONTACTED STATED THAT VARIOUS WARNING LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE, THE MOON ROOF WOULD RANDOMLY OPEN AND CLOSE, AS WELL AS THE VEHICLE WOULD SHIFT GEARS VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHOM PERFORMED A SOFTWARE UPDATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THESE WERE ONGOING FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF GREENSBURG (4964 US-30, GREENSBURG, PA 15601 (724) 552-2761) WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED AND DIAGNOSTIC TESTING RESULTS FOUND NO FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AN INSPECTOR FROM THE MANUFACTURER TOYOTA WAS TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, NO FINAL REPORTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE INSPECTOR STATED THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING CALL BACK FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 23,000.
I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE TOYOTA DEALER AS WELL AS APPLE THAT MY NEW PHONE, AN IPHONE 11 PRO, IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE COMPUTER SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE. THEY BOTH CLAIM THE OTHER NEEDS AN UPDATE, BUT NEITHER ONE HAS ANY IDEA WHEN THAT MAY HAPPEN. I CANNOT USE HANDS FREE BECAUSE THE PHONE CONTINUALLY CONNECTS AND DISCONNECTS TO THE CAR. THE SUGGESTION I GOT FROM THEM WAS TO TURN OFF MY BLUETOOTH AND NOT ALLOW THE PHONE TO CONNECT TO THE CAR. THIS SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE WITH NO END IN SIGHT. THIS HAPPENS ANYTIME THE CAR IS ON SMD THE PHONE CONNECTS. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE FROM NOVEMBER ON...
I TURNED MY CAR TO PARK IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT. I BELIEVE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, IT HAPPENED SO FAST, I AM NOT SURE. . ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN! IT SCARED THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ME! SUDDENLY THE CAR JUMPED THROUGH A WOODEN FENCE AND OFF A FIVE FOOT DROP OFF TO THE STREET BELOW. I WAS LUCKY THERE WAS A PILE OF GRAVEL TO STOP ME. I PUT IT INTO PARK.THE AIRBAGS DID NOT GO OFF. I WAS NOT HURT. BUT I AM VERY STRESSED BY THE INCIDENT. IT WILL BE A MONTH BEFORE IT IS FIXED.
THE VEHICLE STALLED TWICE ON ME AT A RED LIGHT. NO POWER TO STEER. THIS BOTH HAPPENED AT A CITY NEAR WASHINGTON DC. HAD MY BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR CHECKED . BOTH CAME BACK AS IN GREAT CONDITION. ALMOST GOT HIT TWICE FROM BEHIND CAUSE OF THE STALLING.

THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE OR PROCESS A REQUEST FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE REPURCHASED. THE CONTACT WAS UNSURE OF WHICH OPTION TO TAKE. DARCARS TOYOTA FREDERICK (5293 BUCKEYSTOWN PIKE, FREDERICK, MD 21704, (301) 696-6300) WAS CONTACTED, BUT DID NOT DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,680. *BF MANUFACTURE WAS NOTIFIED.*JB
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, VEHICLE MOTOR STOPPED. HAD TO STEER TO THE SHOULDER OF HIGHWAY. WAS ABLE TO TURN VEHICLE ON/OFF, SEEMED TO RESET CAR. ABLE TO DRIVE. WITHIN 250 MILES OCCURRED AGAIN. THIS IS THE SECOND COMPLAINT WITH THIS VEHICLE. LAST YEAR, CAR AUTOMATICALLY DECCLERATED TO 40 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE ON CRUISE CONTROL, WOULD NOT GO ABOVE 40 MPH. VERY DANGEROUS. CAR TAKEN IN TO DEALERSHIP FOR 4 DAYS FOR QUESTS DUST ON SOME KIND OF ELECTRONIC BOARD.
ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH I HIT A PIECE OF WOOD ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 72 MPH. THE WOOD WAS THE SIZE OF A TYPICAL PIECE OF FIREWOOD. MY TIRE INSTANTLY WENT FLAT AND I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. UPON INSPECTION, I SAW THAT THE RIM BROKE INTO TWO PIECES. ESSENTIALLY, WHILE I WAS PULLING OVER, I WAS DRIVING ON A 1/4" LIP OF BROKEN WHEEL RIM. I WAS SHOCKED THAT THIS COULD EVEN HAPPEN. THIS IS REMARKABLY DANGEROUS AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SOMETHING MUCH MORE HARMFUL THAN A FLAT TIRE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT MATERIAL THIS RIM IS MADE OF. DOES TOYOTA BELIEVE IT BROKE BY DESIGN OR THAT FAULTY MATERIALS WERE USED? HOW MANY OTHER INSTANCES LIKE THIS HAVE BEEN REPORTED?
CRUISE CONTROL ON SPEED AT 45 MPH, LIFTED CRUISE LEVER 5 TIMES TO POSTED 50 MPH SPEED GOING ONTO INTERSTATE APRON/BRIDGE. LIFTED THE CRUISE CONT LEVER AND HELD TO ACCELERATE TO POSTED SPEED OF 60. RELEASED LEVER AT 60 MPH, BUT NOTICED CAR STILL ACCELERATING. PULLED ON LEVER TO CANCEL WHEN CAR WAS AT 75 MPH. CAR HAS 19,850 MILES
THE SUNROOF IN OUR 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID JUST EXPLODED. IT WAS 80 DEGREES OUTSIDE. WE WERE DRIVING ON A PAVED, 2 LANE HIGHWAY. NO ONE ELSE WAS ON THE ROAD. THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSIVE SOUND. MY HUSBAND THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN SHOT; I THOUGHT THE BACK OF THE CAR HAD FALLEN OFF. WE PULLED OVER AND INSPECTED THE CAR. THERE WAS A LARGE HOLE (ABOUT 10 INCHES ACROSS) IN THE SUNROOF. SHATTERED GLASS FILLED THE INTERIOR SUNROOF COVER. THE GLASS WAS PUSHED UP, NOT DOWN LIKE YOU WOULD EXPECT IF SOMETHING HIT THE GLASS.
PURCHASED NEW TIRES GOODYEAR AVIVA AT WALMART COVINGTON LA ON AUG 2019 THE CAR PULLED AS SOON AS I PURCHASED THEM AND THEY SAID TO GET ALIGNMENT. WELL AFTER 2 ALIGNMENTS AT TOYOTA AND A THIRD AT AUTOVILLE REPAIR SHOP THEY CAME TO CONCLUSION IT WAS BAD TIRES. THESE TIRES HAVE ONLY 2000 MILES ON THEM AND WALMART WONT CREDIT ANYTHING. THEY WILL KILL PEOPLE IF YOU DONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM . I AM 70 YEARS OLD AND THESE ARE WORST TIRES I EVER OWNED PLEASE HELP PEOPLE STAY ALIVE AND RECALL THEM.
MY TOYOTA HIGHLANDER WOULD NOT GO INTO PARK. THE SUV LUNGED FORWARD OVER CURBING AND INTO BUILDING. THEN WENT VIOLENTLY INTO REVERSE AND INTO A UNCONTROLLABLE SPIN. THEN THE SUV WENT VIOLENTLY INTO DRIVE AND JUMPING OVER A CURBING AND INTO A DITCH AND WAS SITTING ON TOP OF A NATURAL GAS LINE. DURING THIS WHOLE TIME I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE AND PUSHING THE IGNITION SWITCH TRYING TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE. THIS WAS DONE IN A PARKING LOT AS I WAS TRYING TO PARK. *DT *TR
THE VEHICLE WAS HIT BY THE LEFT SIDE AND THE AIRBAGS DID NOT RESPOND
MY VEHICLE HAS APP. 6500 MILES ON IT. THE STEERING HAS A HERKY JERKY FEELING TO IT AT TIMES AND NOW IT'S STARTED MAKING A POPPING NOISE THAT I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT'S COMING FROM OR IF IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE STEERING. ALL THIS HAPPENS WHEN I'M DRIVING ON ANY TYPE OF SURFACE. WHEN I HAD THE TIRES ROTATED IN JUNE, I WAS NOT INFORMED OF ANY PROBLEM BUT THERE IS CLEARLY SOMETHING GOING WRONG. IT'S A LITTLE DIFFICULT STATING A STARTING TIME BUT IT HASN'T GONE AWAY.
I PURCHASED A TOYOTA HIGHLANDER IN APRIL 2017 FROM THE JIM COLEMAN DEALER IN BETHESDA, MARYLAND. SINCE THEN, THIS TERRIBLE DESIGNED CAR IS HURTING ME AND MY FAMILY. IN THE BACK OF THE CAR, THE REAR LIGHT COVERS STICK OUT ABOUT 3 INCHES, THE EDGES ARE AS SHARP AS A KEEN KNIFE (PHOTOS ATTACHED). WHEN I UNLOAD STUFF FROM THE TRUNK, IT OFTEN HURTS ME. I HAVE TRIED TO BE VERY CAREFUL. I ALSO REMINDED MY TEENAGE SON WITH CAUTION. HOWEVER, IT STICKS OUT TOO MUCH AND IS TOO SHARP. IT IS HARD TO AVOID. IT KEEPS HURTING. FOR EXAMPLE, THREE MONTHS AGO, ON AN EVENING IT WAS DARK AND RAINING, AT A COSTCO PARKING LOT, WHEN I UPLOADED GROCERIES ONTO THE CAR, MY RIGHT ARM AND JOINT WERE SUDDENLY HIT BY THIS SHARP CUTTING EDGE OF THE REAR LIGHT COVER. THE KEEN EDGE CUT MY ARM, AND THE STICK OUT PART BADLY HURT MY JOINT (PHOTOS ATTACHED). I COULD NOT RAISE MY ARM. THREE MONTHS HAVE PASSED; HOWEVER, MY JOINT IS STILL PAINING. I WENT TO JIM COLEMAN DEALER AND POINTED OUT THE DANGER PART IN THE REAR. I HAD THEIR MANAGERS AND STAFF TO FEEL BY PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON THE KEEN EDGE. THEY ALL ADMITTED IT IS BAD DESIGN AND EASY TO INJURE PEOPLE. BUT THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I ASKED IF THEY COULD REPORT INCIDENTS/CASES TO MANUFACTURERS, AND HAVE IT IMPROVED. THEY SAID THEY SELL CARS ONLY. I RANDOMLY TOOK PHOTOS OF OTHER MADE OF CARS (PHOTOS ATTACHED). NONE OF THEM STICK OUT A KNIFE LIKES HIGHLANDER. IT IS A NIGHTMARE WHEN USING THIS HIGHLANDER DAILY. *JS
INTERMITTENT LOW SPEED THROTTLE DOES NOT RESPOND, THEN SUDDENLY "CATCHES" AND RAPIDLY ACCELERATES ALMOST CAUSING ACCIDENT. HAPPENED 4 TIMES SO FAR. REPORTED TO PIERCEY TOYOTA AT EACH OF LAST 2 SERVICES. THEIR RESPONSE IS TECHNICIAN DROVE CAR AND CANNOT DUPLICATE.

CAR STALLED HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN 5 TIMES AT PARKING LOT - GAS STATION - HOME - RESTAURANT - CAR WASH CAR HAS STOPPED WHILE DRIVING ON MAIN STREET 1 TIME
ON SATURDAY APRIL 27 AT 2 PM I PUT MY CAR IN PARK AND WAS GETTING OUT. THE CAR STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS AND AS I WENT TO REACT WAS KNOCKED DOWN AND PINNED UNDER THE FRONT LEFT TIRE OF THE CAR. MY THREE CHILDREN WERE IN THE BACK WATCHING THEIR MOTHER LYING ON THE GROUND HELPLESS AND SCREAMING FOR HELP. I HAVE ADDRESSED IT WITH AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA SERVICE DEALER MANY TIMES BUT NOTHING HAS BEEN 'FOUND' BY THEM. THEY ADJUSTED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SHOES AND LUBRICATED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE PARTS, BUT NOTHING HAS FIXED IT. THE SOUND KEEPS COMING BACK. I HAVE ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS. THE CASE IS NOW CLOSED DUE TO THE SERVICE DEALER STATING THE SOUND IS NOT A 'DEFECT' AND THEY HAVE TO BASICALLY WAIT FOR MORE COMPLAINTS TO TAKE ANY ACTION. I CAN HEAR THIS SOUND ANYWHERE FROM 10 TO 30+ TIMES A DAY WHEN I DRIVE AROUND IN A CITY AND SUBURBAN SETTING, WHERE I AM STOPPING AT MANY STOP SIGNS AND RED LIGHTS. IT IS LOUD ENOUGH TO HEAR OVER SOME LOW TO MEDIUM LOUD MUSIC PLAYING. IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGING. I AM WORRIED THE BRAKES WILL FAIL OR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WILL ENGAGE WITHOUT ME SETTING IT. I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME MOST OF THE TIME. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

I WAS DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE WITH DYNAMIC SPEED CONTROL ON. THE CAR SLOWED APPROPRIATELY TO MATCH THE SPEED OF THE THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF ME. SUDDENLY SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES APPEARED: MASTER WARNING LIGHT, CHECK ENGINE, CHECK AWD, GO TO TOYOTA DEALER, ENGINE POWER LOSS.THE CAR SLOWED TO ABOUT 35 MILES AN HOUR (IN A 65 MPH AREA) WHILE TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME WAS AT (OR ABOVE) THE SPEED LIMIT. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET TO THE SHOULDER AND TURN THE CAR OFF. I TOOK A FEW MINUTES TO USE MY SMARTPHONE TO FIND THE NEAREST DEALER AND PLANNED TO GO OFF THE EXIT (WHICH WAS JUST A FEW YARD AHEAD) AND TRY TO MAKE IT TO THE DEALER ON SIDE ROADS. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR ALL LIGHTS AND WARNINGS WERE OFF AND THE CAR DROVE WITHOUT INCIDENT UNTIL I REACHED THE DEALER NEAR MY RESIDENCE, ABOUT 100 MILES AWAY. THE SERVICE REP AT THE DEALER ADVISED I HAD TRAVELED TOO FAR SINCE THE INCIDENT FOR THEIR COMPUTER ANALYSIS TO WORK AND HE HAD NO ADVICE EXCEPT TO GO TO THE NEAREST DEALER IF IT EVER HAPPENED AGAIN. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SOME INFO ON HOW TO AVOID SUCH AN INCIDENT AGAIN.
SEVERAL INSTANCES WITH VEHICLE MOVING ON A CITY STREET LESS THAN 5 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN INTO A SIDE STREET THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL ENGINE POWER AT THE GAS PEDAL. ATTEMPTS TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL HAS NO AFFECT, THEN AFTER ABOUT 5-8 SECONDS THE VEHICLE RESPONDS TO THE GAS PEDAL AND STARTS MOVING. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WHEN MOVING SLOWLY ON A CITY STREET AND ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE LANES, WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE CHANGE THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL POWER FOR 5-8 SECONDS AND THEN WILL START TO RESPOND TO THE GAS PEDAL. THEN RESPONDS TO THE GAS PEDAL. THIS IS POTENTIALLY A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN AS I'M UNSURE IF THE CAR WILL GO OR NOT WHEN THIS OCCURS. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE BACK TO TOYOTA'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TWO TIMES FOR THIS PROB LEM AND THEY REPEATEDLY TELL ME THAT THEY CAN NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THAT THE VEHICLE IS OPERATING NORMALLY.
SITTING IN THE CAR WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN THE PARK POSITION, MOTOR AND ACCESSORIES OFF, THE TAILGATE OPENED ON ITS OWN SIX TIMES IN A 45 MINUTE PERIOD. EACH TIME WE CLOSED THE HATCH WITH THE BUTTON ON THE DASH. WHEN WE RETURNED HOME AND PARKED IN THE GARAGE, THE DOOR OPENED AGAIN BY ITSELF WITHIN A TWO HOUR PERIOD. ALL KEYFOBS WERE IN THE HOUSE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUN ROOF WAS SHATTERED, BUT DID NOT COLLAPSE UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF PHARR (956-815-2285, LOCATED AT 1625 W EXPY 83, PHARR, TX 78577) WHERE THE DEALER INSISTED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A FALLING OBJECT. THE CONTACT WAS PROVIDED AN ESTIMATE FOR INSURANCE PURPOSES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 24,800. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.
WHILE COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT, THE VEHICLE STARTED JOLTING LIKE IT WAS GOING TO SHUT OFF. ONCE AT A FULL STOP, THE CAR DID NOT SHUT OFF. INSTEAD, ONCE I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BREAK, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. I SHIFTED INTO PARK, BACK TO DRIVE, REVERSE, AND EVEN MANUAL BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I WAS STUCK ON A ROAD WHERE CARS DRIVE 60-70 MPH IF THE LIGHT IS GREEN I WAS AFRAID THAT I WOULD BE READ-ENDED. I WAS HELPED BY A GOOD SAMARITAN OFF THE ROAD AND WAS FORCED TO TOW THE VEHICLE TO MY HOUSE. NEXT MORNING, THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT MOVE AND WAS FORCED TO TOW IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. OUTSIDE OF SOME IRREGULAR DOWN-SHIFTING, THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ULTIMATELY, THE SYSTEM WAS REBOOTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO ME AFTER I TEST DROVE IT WITH THE SHOP FOREMAN. BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WAS NOT DIAGNOSED, I FEEL UNSAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND AFRAID THAT PROBLEM MAY REOCCUR, LEAVING ME IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE DEALERSHIP ITSELF WAS VERY HELPFUL BUT THEY RELIED ON CORPORATE TOYOTA TO GUIDE THEM WITH DIAGNOSING AND FIXING THE PROBLEM. IT SEEMS THEY CAME UP SHORT.
I WAS IN A REAR IMPACT COLLISION IN MY HIGHLANDER. MY VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY ON A HIGHWAY, HAVING STOPPED TO AVOID A COLLISION, AND WAS HIT FROM BEHIND AT A RELATIVELY HIGH RATE OF SPEED (ESTIMATED 55-65 MPH). MY CAR WAS PUSHED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF IT WHICH CAUSED A CHAIN REACTION WITH SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES. IMMEDIATELY AFTER IMPACT I BEGAN TO FEEL NECK AND BACK PAIN AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. PRIOR TO TRANSPORT, WE NOTICED THAT MY HEADREST HAD BROKEN FREE IN THE IMPACT AND WAS LAYING ON THE BACK FLOORBOARD.

AFTER DRIVING FOR A LITTLE BIT THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATION UNINTENTIONALLY BY ITSELF. AND THE CAR STARTED TO ZIG ZAG ACROSS THE HIGHWAY LANES WITHOUT THE DRIVER TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DRIVER TRIED TO PRESS ON THE BRAKE BUT IT WAS NOT EFFECTIVE. THE CAR THEN GRAZED AN HIGHWAY GUARDRAIL AND IT PARTIALLY RIPPED OFF THE REAR LEFT SIDE AND REAR BUMPER. THE DRIVER KEPT PRESSING THE BRAKE WITHOUT EFFECT WHILE SWERVING ACROSS THE LANES. THEN SUDDENLY THE BRAKES STARTED TO WORK AND THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO BRING THE CAR TO A STOP ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER. THE DRIVER PUT IT INTO PARK BUT THE ENGINE KEPT REVVING AT HIGH RPM UNTIL THE DRIVER TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I THINK THE CAR HAD A SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION INCIDENT DUE TO THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL. IN ADDITION, I THINK THE ZIG ZAG WAS DUE TO THE ELECTRONIC TRACTION/ STABILITY CONTROL, SENDING EXCESSIVE POWER TO A WHEEL ON A PARTICULAR SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHEN IT DIDN'T NEED IT.
BOUGHT THIS 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER NEW FROM DEALER IN DENVER. 400 MILES ON VEHICLE. THE WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED SEVERELY IN THE FIRST 1000 MILES FROM MINOR STONES HITTING THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD, REQUIRING REPLACEMENT- OEM WITH CAMERA, HEAT, RADAR SENSORS FOR $1800. NOW, THAT SECOND WINDSHIELD HAS CRACKED AGAIN, REQUIRING A 3RD WINDSHIELD INSTALLED AT 27,000 MILES. TOYOTA SLANTED THE ANGLE OF THE FRONT HOOD ON THIS VEHICLE TO REDUCE DRAG AND IMPROVE GAS MILEAGE. AS A RESULT, MINOR STONES ON THE ROAD ARE THROWN VIOLENTLY INTO THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD LEADING TO CRACKS WHICH START FROM THE BASE OF THE GLASS AND QUICKLY CRAWL UP AND ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD REQUIRING REPLACEMENTS. THIS IS NOT SAFE. I HAVE HAD 3 BRAND NEW HIGHLANDERS IN DENVER OVER 12 YEARS- A 2009 HIGHLANDER HYBRID LIMITED, A 2015 HIGHLANDER LIMITED AND THIS 2017 HIGHLANDER LIMITED- AND THIS IS THE FIRST VEHICLE WHERE THE WINDSHIELD BARELY LASTS A FEW THOUSAND MILES BEFORE CRACKING AND REQUIRING A NEW WINDSHIELD. THESE WINDSHIELDS ARE HEATED, WITH CAMERA AND RADAR SENSORS AND OEM ONLY SO REPLACING THESE IS NOT CHEAP- $1800 PER WINDSHIELD FROM TOYOTA. THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. PROTECTION FOR THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD NEEDS TO BE ADDED. THE CRACKS ALWAYS HAPPEN IN THE SAME SPOT.

THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY FOR A SECOND OR TWO, THEN JUST SEEMS TO HANG AT 5-10 MPH. PUMPING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL QUICKLY FULL UP, FULL DOWN MAY HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM, I'M NOT REALLY SURE, BUT THAT IS WHAT I DID.THE VEHICLE OPERATES NORMALLY AFTER THAT.IN THE LAST AND MOST FRIGHTENING EPISODE, I WAS AT A STOP,ON A SIDE STREET WAITING TO TURN ONTO A FRONTAGE ROAD WHERE TYPICAL SPEEDS ARE 60 MPH. I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FULL DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND TURNED ONTO THE FRONTAGE ROAD. THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY FOR 1-2 SECONDS, THEN AS BEFORE, JUST STAYED AT 5-10 MPH WITH A CAR COMING UPON MY REAR AT 60 MPH. FORTUNATELY FOR ME HE WAS ABLE TO CHANGE LANES AND AVOID RUNNING INTO ME. I PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AS DESCRIBED. THE VEHICLE THAN RESPONDED NORMALLY. I DON'T REMEMBER IF THE VEHICLE WAS IN POWER OR ECONOMY MODE. I TYPICALLY PUT IT INTO POWER MODE BEFORE ENTERING THE HIGHWAY (WHICH I WAS ABOUT TO DO ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE FRONTAGE ROAD) IF I REMEMBER. AS YOU MAY IMAGINE THIS LAST EPISODE LEFT ME QUITE DISTURBED. I ALWAYS USE REGULAR GRADE GASOLINE FROM TOP NAME GAS STATIONS. THESE EVENTS HAPPENED WITH DIFFERENT TANKS OF GAS FROM DIFFERENT STATIONS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO READ ANY ERROR CODES FROM THE COMPUTER, AND WERE UNABLE TO REPEAT THE PROBLEM IN A TEST DRIVE. THEY HAVE ESCALATED THE CASE TO THE TOYOTA ENGINEERING TEAM.

ON AUGUST 10TH 2018, I WAS DRIVING MY 2017 HIGHLANDER WITH 17,000 MILES ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY IN CALIFORNIA WHEN I ACCELERATED HARD TO PASS OTHER VEHICLES. SUDDENLY THE HIGHLANDER LOST ALL POWER WITH ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES SOUNDING. THE ORANGE TRIANGULAR WARNING/CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON WITH THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM FAILURE FLASHING NEEDING IMMEDIATE SERVICE. I WAS ABLE THE GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT GETTING KILLED AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. AFTER A MINUTE I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS RESET. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED. FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED THE HIGHLANDER HAD ONLY 4,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS UNDER THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES. I WAS TRYING TO PASS. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP IN RENO NV THEY SAID ALL THE ERROR CODES WERE NOT CAPTURED AND THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF THIS ISSUE DESPITE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET AS WELL AS THIS SITE? I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO WITHOUT AN ERROR CODE. THEY SUGGESTED THE NEXT TIME IT HAPPENS, DO NOT RESTART THE CAR AND HAVE IT TOWED THE A DEALERSHIP TO TRY AND RECAPTURE AN ERROR CODE. I FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA CORP BUT THEY LEAD ME TO THINK THAT THEY DON'T INVESTIGATE INCIDENTS LIKE THIS UNLESS THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS. I HAVE ADVISED MY FAMILY OF THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION WITH THE HIGHLANDER AND IF ANY ONE GETS HURT OR KILLED PLEASE SUE THE HECK OUT OF THEM. RPM WENT UP TO OVER 3000 AND RPM NEEDLE ON DASHBOARD STARTED DANCING. AND I WATCHED 'CHECK AWD SYSTEM','TRACTION CONTROL TURNED OFF','CHECK ENGINE VISIT YOUR DEALERSHIP' COMING UP. AUTOMATICALLY MY CAR LOST POWER CONTROL. WE WERE VERY SCARED BECAUSE EVERYONE THERE WAS DRIVING A CAR WITH HIGH SPEED AT NIGHT. I TURNED ON EMERGENCY LIGHT AND PUT MY CAR ON SERVICE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, NO BODY FOLLOWED BEHIND MY CAR AT THAT TIME. IF SOMEONE KEPT APPROACHING MY CAR,WE WOULD HAVE MADE BIG TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. THIS IS SAFETY ISSUE FOR US. "TAKATA RECALL" WHILE DRIVING BACK HOME WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE 5 SOUTH FREEWAY HEADING BACK TO LOS ANGELES FROM NEWHALL CA, THE WARNING, THE ABS, THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE TRACKING CONTROL LIGHTS LID ON MY DASHBOARD ALL AT THE SAME TIME, SCARE ME SINCE I WAS DRIVING WITH MY CHILDREN I DID NOT KNOW IF MY CAR WOULD ALL OF SUDDEN TURN OFF , BUT ONCE I GOT HOME I PARK AND RETURN BACK TO CHECK IT 30 MINUTES LATER TURN THE CAR ON AND THE LIGHTS WHERE STILL THERE I TURN THE CAR BACK OFF AND THIS MORNING THEY WHERE NO LONGER THERE I CALLED THE DEALER BUT THEY SAID THEY CANT NO LONGER DO ANYTHING BUT DO THE 5 POINT CHECK SINCE THE LIGHTS ARE NOT THERE FOR THEM TO SEE WHAT IS WRONG THE CAR OR WHY THE LIGHTS LID IN THE DASHBORAD.
SINCE I LEASED BY HIGHLANDER I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CAR SHIFTS VERY HARD, SOMETIMES SPUTTERING BETWEEN 5-10MPH AND THEN ACCELERATING. DEALER REFLASHED THE COMPUTER BASED ON TECHNICAL BULLETIN TSB-0194-17. THEY HAVE NOW HAD THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS AND HAVE REPLICATED THE ISSUE AND I AM AWAITING GUIDANCE. THE VEHICLE HAS 13,000 MILES ON IT, THERE SHOULD NOT BE MAJOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES. MY COMPLAINT DOESN'T SEEM ISOLATED.
IN MOTION, THERE WAS NO INDICATOR LIGHT ON BOARD, JUST BIG NOISE STARTED COMING DURING START OR SPEED OF CAR. ENGINE CYL 6 ROD BEARING WAS FAULTY , MAKING NOISE, DEALER REPAIRED IT AND NOT ABLE TO ASSURE OTHER BEARINGS DONT HAVE ANY ISSUES.
