I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. I GOT MY CAR 8-23-2005 AND ON 10-13-2005 I WAS HIT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHILE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. THE INTERSECTIONS WAS JUST AFTER A TRAFFIC CIRCLE, SIGNS WAS MISSING, IT WAS RAINING, DUSK AND THE PERSON WHO HIT ME DID NOT HAVE HER LIGHTS ON AND WAS DRIVING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS. MY CAR STOPPED, AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. IT WAS TOWED. I CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND WAS SENT TO A REPAIR FACILITY. AFTER SEVERAL DAYS THEY GOT MY CAR, BUT BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT START, TOWED IT TO A TOYOTA SHOP. IT SAT THERE FOR 10 DAYS, UNTIL I CALLED, THEN IT WAS SENT BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP. IT TOOK 6 MORE WEEKS FOR THE CAR TO BE REPAIRED. ONE DELAY WAS IN GETTING THE SEAT-BELT, WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO COME WITH THE SEAT, BUT DID NOT. IT HAD TO BE SHIPPED FROM JAPAN (I WAS TOLD). AFTER THE REPAIR WAS DONE, 9 WEEKS AFTER THE ACCIDENT, THE CAR WOULD NOT START. IT WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. TWO WEEKS LATER, I AM TOLD THAT A WIRING HARNESS WAS THE PROBLEM. THIS HAS TO BE SHIPPED FROM JAPAN, AND THE EXPECTED DATE OF ARRIVAL IS 1-11-2006. MEANWHILE, I HAVE NOT HAD MY CAR FOR NEARLY 3 MONTHS. MY INSURANCE PAID FOR 30 DAYS OF A RENTAL CAR (I WAITED A WEEK TO GET THE RENTAL CAR), THEN I PAID FOR ANOTHER 4 WEEKS. I HAVE NOTIFIED TOYOTA 2 TIMES ABOUT THIS SITUATION. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE I HAVE A "SPECIAL" CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE CARD. THIS CARD ONLY SEEMS TO BE GOOD FOR PURCHASES, AND NOT FOR ACTUAL ASSISTANCE. I THINK PRIUS OWNERS NEED TO KNOW THAT THEIR CARS CAN ONLY BE REPAIRED AT A FEW LOCATIONS, AND MOST DEALERSHIPS CAN NOT REPAIR THEM PROPERLY. ADDITIONALLY, I THINK THE CAR HAS A SIGNIFICANT BLINDS POT, AS I AM FREQUENTLY SURPRISED BY OTHER CARS SUDDENLY APPEARING. *JB
APPEARS TO BE A TEMPORARY ENGINE STALL AT 68 MILES PER HOUR IN CARPOOL LANE, WARNING LIGHT CAME ON BUT DISAPPEARED RIGHT AWAY AND THE CAR WAS FINE AGAIN. BUT LOTS OF CAR VIBRATIONS AND JOLTING FELT AT THE TIME. *JB
MY 2005 PRIUS HAD ENGINE FAILURE WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY. I PULLED OVER AND HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED, AND THE COMPUTER RESET. I SOON AFTER LEARNED OF A RECALL, AND NOW I AM TOLD THAT MY CAR DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL. I THINK IT IS UNSAFE, AND I WANT THE COMPUTER PROBLEM REMEDIED. *JB
WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT, I GOT A RED TRIANGLE WITH ! INSIDE THAT CAME ON. THE VEHICLE ENGINE STOPPED AND THE CAR WAS PUT AUTOMATICALLY IN PARK. I COULD NOT RESTART THE CAR AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED. THE ACCESSORIES STILL WORKED, JUST NO ENGINE. *NM
POSSIBLY RELEVANT TO CURRENT PRIUS SOFTWARE RELIABILITY INVESTIGATION NUMBER : PE05029 I SPOKE TO GILLES LABELLE OF WESTBORO TOYOTA IN WESTBOROUGH MASSACHUSETTS REGARDING THE TOYOTA PRIUS (THIS WAS A PRE-SALES CONVERSATION; I DO NOT AT PRESENT OWN A PRIUS THOUGH UNTIL THIS CONVERSATION I WAS VERY CLOSE BUYING ONE; NOW I FIND MYSELF TAKING A STEP BACK TO ENSURE I'VE DONE MY OWN DUE DILIGENCE). HE MENTIONED THE USE OF A RESET SEQUENCE TO "REBOOT" THE CAR IN THE EVENT OF PROBLEMS AS A WAY TO AVOID THE NEED TO HAVE THE CAR SERVICED; I ASKED HIM HOW OFTEN HE HAD TO REBOOT HIS OWN PRIUS; HE DIDN'T ANSWER DIRECTLY BUT INSTEAD SAID THAT HE HAD HELPED ABOUT 100 CUSTOMERS THROUGH THE REBOOT PROCESS. I AM A OPERATING SYSTEMS SOFTWARE ENGINEER BY PROFESSION AND WAS ALARMED AT THIS "JUST HIT RESET" ATTITUDE TOWARDS SYSTEMS FAILURES; IDEALLY CRASHES IN THE FIELD SHOULD BE RARE ENOUGH THAT EACH ONE CAN BE ROOT-CAUSED, RATHER THAN SHRUGGED OFF. *JB
I AM AN OWNER OF A TOYOTA PRIUS 2005. AFTER READING THE INVESTIGATION ABOUT THE 2010 PRIUS BRAKE PROBLEMS I FEEL I EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM IN MY CAR. WHEN BRAKE SOMETIMES IT FEELS AS THOUGH THE CAR MOMENTARILY SPEEDS UP BEFORE THE BRAKING ACTION OCCURS. IT IS BRIEF (ABOUT A SECOND IN DURATION) AND THEN THE CAR BRAKES AS EXPECTED. I HAVE ASKED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS I'VE HAD MY CAR SERVICED AT SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE SENSATION AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS NORMAL AS THE CAR SWITCH REGENERATING THE BATTERIES TO WHEN THE HYDRAULIC BRAKES ARE ENGAGED AND NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. I UNDERSTAND TOYOTA HAS ADMITTED A PROBLEM IN THE 2010 MODEL YEAR BUT I FEEL THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS IN MY CAR AND WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE INVESTIGATION IS NOT JUST FOR 2010 MODEL YEAR OF THE TOYOTA PRIUS. *TR
APPLYING BRAKES WHEN GOING OVER SLIGHT ROAD DISTURBANCES CAUSES COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKING TEMPORARILY, FOLLOWED BY A BRIEF SURGE (ACCELERATION). NO OTHER VEHICLE I'VE OWNED HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM. ADDITIONALLY SLIGHT ROAD DISTURBANCES (MILD BUMPS) CAUSE TRACTION CONTROL TO TURN ON INAPPROPRIATELY. NO OTHER VEHICLE I'VE OWNED HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALER (SPECIFICALLY THE SALES PERSON) WAS INITIALLY CONTACTED IN 2005 ABOUT THESE ISSUES AND IT WAS REPORTED BACK TO ME THAT THIS WAS NORMAL. NOW I AM FINDING OUT THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, SOME OF THEM IN BRAND NEW 2010 VEHICLES. THE INITIAL INCIDENT DATE IS AUG 2005, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO THIS DAY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO STOP, THE BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE FOR ABOUT THREE SECONDS. ON ONE OCCASION, WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP AND CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT. THE DRIVER IN THE OTHER VEHICLE SUSTAINED INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THE MANUFACTURER BUT WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST BECAUSE THERE WAS NO FAILURE WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,235.
1 )STALL ON 5/26/05 @1:30 PM AT A SPEED OF 35 MPH + - WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER FEW MINTS I ABLE TO START & GOT THE ENGINE , & RESTARTED & ALSO RE STARTED AC & GOT GOGOING. SAME DAY @ 4:30 PM AC WAS SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND SCREEN WAS COMPLETELY BLANK @ SPEED OF 62 MPH + -, PULLED OF TO SHOULDER TURNED OFF ING. 2) SAME THING ON 8/31/05 11:30 AM @ SPEED OF 55 MPH FIRST AC WENT & WITH IN LESS THAN A MILE ENGINE WENT COMPLETELY, DID NOT START IN FIRST FEW MINUTES, AFTER WAITING 10 OR SO MINUTES ENGINE STARTED & AC STARTED. DROVE TO THE DEALER FOR CHECK UP , WAS GIVEN HARD TIME BY SERVICE REP, WILL NOT TAKE IN WITHOUT APPOINTMENT & REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE OR A LONER CAR. WHEN I TOLD HIM " YOU WANT ME TO GET KILLED OUT IN TRAFFIC" HE REPLIED " NOTHING I CAN DO TO HELP YOU I AM DOING MY JOB WHAT I AM TOLD" I ASKED WANT SEE MANAGER HE REPLIED " HE IS ON VACATION NO ONE IS TAKING HIS PLACE" I WAS VERY UPSET & ANGRY WITH HIS REPLY & ATTITUDE IN THE END HE ADDED " GO GET A LAWYER" I LEFT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITH APPOINTMENT ON 9/2/05 3:PM AND THEN.......................! WENT TO SEE SALES PERSON & SHE WAS VERY HUMBLE & HELP FULL , SHE SET ME UP WITH LONER- RENTAL CAR AT NO CHARGE & I LEFT MY CAR PRIUS 2005 WITH DEALER SHIP FOR FULL CHECK UP. 2004 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH 23915 MILES ON IT. DRIVING TO WORK WEST ON I-90 DURING RUSH HOUR ENGINE STOPPED DEAD. I-90 IS 8 LANES OF TRAFFIC IN SPOKANE, WA. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO DEALER FOR REPAIRS. PROBLEM WAS A FAILURE IN THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT. ECU HAD TO BE RE-PROGRAMED. CAUSE FOUND BY DEALER: FOUND CODE P3191 & POAOF CODES. FOUND TBS #EG047-04. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR, TOYOTA ISSUED A TECHNICAL BULLETIN COVERING THIS PROBLEM BUT STATED THERE WERE TOO FEW FAILURES TO WARANT A RECALL. BEING ON AN INTERSTATE DURING RUSH HOUR WITH TRAFFIC DOING 70+ MPH AND HAVING AN ENGINE FAILURE COULD CREATE A LIFE THREATING SITUATION VERY QUICKLY. THE LAST THING I ASKED THE SERVICE ADVISOR IS IF THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN? HIS RESPONSE, "IT SHOULDN'T." THAT'S REASSURING.
TRAVELING ON NJ TURNPIKE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN NEW 2005 PRIUS LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO ATTEMPTS AT ACCELERATION TO KEEP UP WITH TRAFFIC. WAS ABLE TO MOVE OVER 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC AND STOP ON SIDE OF HIGHWAY. TURNED OFF CAR AND RESTARTED AFTER LESS THAN A MINUTE. NO FURTHER INCIDENTS SINCE. TOOK CAR TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THEY COULD FIND NO REASON FOR THE FAILURE AFTER MONITORING THE COMPUTER. *NM
2005 TOYOTA PRIUS, NEW NOV. 2004, CURRENT MILEAGE 11,100 MILES, INCIDENT AUG. 13, 2005, 9:10 PM. DRIVING FOR 30 MINUTES AT A STEADY RATE OF 45 MPH ON RTE. 78, 11/12 TANK OF GAS, NO AIR CONDITIONING OR RADIO ON. AUTO HESTITATED. DASHBOARD SYMBOLS INDICATED PROBLEM: BRAKE FAILURE, CHECK ENGINE, HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE. ANOTHER SYMBOL WAS ON COMPUTER SCREEN - CAR WITH LINE DRAWN VERTICALLY THROUGH IT. BATTERY USAGE INDICATOR WAS DISAPPEARING. THIS ALL OCCURED WITHIN MINUTE OR LESS. PULLED INTO A NOCO GASOLINE STATION. PUT CAR IN PARK BUT COULDN'T GET THE POWER OFF THAT KEPT THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS, HEADLIGHTS, AIR CONDITIONING, HORN ON. COULDN'T RESTART MY CAR. I COULD ONLY PUT MY CAR INTO NUETRAL OR PARK. AUTO TOWED TO THE CLOSED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. DASHBOARD LIGHTS REMAINED ON. UNABLE TO START THE CAR OR TO LOCK THE DOOR MANUALLY OR WITH THE KEYLESS SYSTEM. SUNDAY, CHECKED THE CARAND THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS WERE OFF BUT I STILL COULDN'T START THE CAR OR LOCK THE DOORS. MONDAY, EXPLAINED MY PROBLEM TO SERVICE MANAGER. THIS IS WHAT WAS DONE: NEW BATTERY INSTALLED. NO REPROGRAMMING OF THE ECU BECAUSE THE COMPUTER MEMORY WAS GONE DUE TO THIS FAILURE. MANAGER DID NOT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEANT ABOUT REPROGRAMMING THE COMPUTER ALTHOUGH SAID RECEIVED ALL SERVICE BULLETINS FROM TOYOTA. ASKED FOR A COPY OF THE WORK ORDER FOR MY RECORDS BUT HE SAID HE HAD TO STILL FIGURE OUT HOURS AND SO WOULD SEND ME A COPY AT A LATER DATE. . HE EXPLAINED THE REPLACED BATTERY COMMUNICATED WITH THE HYBRID SYSTEM AND WAS SURE THIS WAS THE CAUSE OF THE POWER FAILURE. I HAD HOPED THE ECU WOULD HAVE BEEN REPROGRAMED. IT WASN'T. SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGNS 40A OR 40 D ARE UNKNOWN TO ME. MY VEHICLE HAS SHOWN NO PROBLEMS DURING THE LAST FIVE DAYS. CAN I GET MY COMPUTER REPROGRAMMED? IS IT NECESSARY? RECALL GOING TO BE ISSUED? I'M NOT SAFE!

AUTO-DIMMING REAR VIEW MIRROR DOES NOT DIM ENOUGH. THIS LEFT A LOT OF HEADLIGHT GLARE BEING REFLECTED BACK TO THE DRIVER. IT RESULTED IN INABILITY OF THE DRIVER TO SAFELY SEE ROADWAY. THE DRIVER SLOWED AND STOPPED THE CAR, AND ALLOWED ALL TRAFFIC TO PASS. EVENTUALLY, THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION IT WAS FOUND THAT THE LIGHT SENSOR ON THE FRONT OF THE REAR VIEWING AUTODIM MIRROR APPEARS TO BE DEFECTIVE. IF ONE COVERS THIS LIGHT SENSOR WITH TRANSLUCENT MATERIAL AND/OR ALL TOGETHER COVERS THE LIGHT SENSOR, THEN PROPER AUTODIMMING OCCURS.
2005 TOYOTA PRIUS HAS A DEFECTIVE OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR.*MR WHEN THE CONSUMERS HUSBAND BUMPED THE DRIVER'S SIDE MIRROR, IT FELL OFF. THE MIRROR WAS CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE VIA A PLASTIC PIN THAT SNAPPED ON THE ARM EXTENDING OUT FROM THE VEHICLE. THE PLASTIC PIN SNAPPED WHICH LEFT THE MIRROR HANGING DOWN, BUT STILL CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE VIA THE ELECTRICAL WIRES. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE PIN HOLDING THE MIRROR ON THE ARM WAS DEFECTIVE AND IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BROKEN WITH A MILD BUMP. *JB
I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA PRIUS ON THE FREEWAY AND THE VEHICLE DIED AT 55 MPH. THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THERE WAS NO POWER TO THE ACCELERATOR. FORTUNATELY, TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A SECURE SPOT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENED ON THE APPROACH TO THE BAY BRIDGE, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN A POTENTIAL DISASTER HAD IT DIED ON THE BRIDGE ITSELF. THE CAR DID NOT START AGAIN ON MY FIRST ATTEMPT, BUT IT DID START 5 MINUTES LATER. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY INSTALLED NEW INFORMATION INTO THE COMPUTER. I WANT TO KNOW WHY, IF THEY KNOW IT NEEDS NEW INFORMATION, DID I NOT RECEIVE A LETTER ASKING ME TO COME IN FOR SERVICE? THIS COULD HAVE BEEN REALLY DISASTROUS, AND I FEAR THAT IT WILL BE FOR SOMEONE ELSE. *JB
2005 TOYOTA PRIUS STALLING AT 35-40 MPH.*MR THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO BAD PROGRAMMING AT THE FACTORY. THE COMPUTER WA RESET PER TSB EG047-04. *NM
PURCHASED 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS - VIN # JTD KB2 OU1 530 793 29 ON JULY 20, 2005 -REGISTERED IT TO MY WIFE KRISTA GOTTLIEB. ON JULY 22, 2005 WHEN THIS CAR HAD ABOUT 80 MILES ON IT, I WAS DRIVING IT ON THE HIGHWAY IN TRAFFIC AT ABOUT 50 MPH - WHEN SUDDENLY I LOST COMPLETE POWER. BY THAT, I MEAN THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. I AM NOT AWARE OF WHAT THE INSTRUMENTS INDICATED AS I WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH THE TRAFFIC (FOR MORE DETAILS - I SENT A VERY DETAILED E-MAIL ABOUT THE FAILURE TO OUR DEALER CULLIGAN TOYOTA, AMHERST, NY ON JULY 24, 2005 - I HAVE ALSO SENT ADDITIONAL FOLLOW-UP E-MAILS TO CULLIGAN SINCE THAT DATE. ). AS A RESULT OF THE JULY 24 MESSAGE, I ARRANGED TO LEAVE THE CAR WITH CULLIGAN TOYOTA SERVICE ADVISOR STEPHEN DESOTELL ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 2005 TO BE CHECKED OUT. AT ABOUT 3:00 P.M. ON JULY 27 STEPHEN CALLED ME TO TELL ME THAT THEY HAD CHECKED OUT THE CAR AND COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT IN ANY WAY '' MECHANICAL OR COMPUTER OR ANYTHING. HE SAID THAT IT HAD THE LATEST SOFTWARE AND THAT THERE WERE NO OUTSTANDING SERVICE BULLETINS OF RECALLS FOR THE CAR AND THAT IN HIS DISCUSSION WITH TOYOTA, IT WAS SUGGESTED TO HIM THAT I MUST HAVE INADVERTENTLY HIT THE ''POWER'' BUTTON ON THE DASHBOARD - OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT. SUBSEQUENTLY I TESTED THE CAR AND FOUND THAT I COULD NOT TURN OFF OUR PRIUS BY DELIBERATELY PUSHING OR HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON IN. BY CALL TO THE ABOVE SERVICE ADVISOR SINCE THEN, HE LATER CONFIRMED THAT THIS WAS CORRECT - THAT IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO ACCIDENTALLY OR DELIBERATELY SHUT ANY PRIUS DOWN BY HITTING THE POWER BUTTON WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION UNDER POWER. WE HAVE HAD NO REPEAT OF THIS EVENT. HOWEVER, THE FAILURE HAPPENED TO US IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN I WAS IN THE PASSING LANE WITH TRAFFIC ON MY RIGHT AND ONCOMING TRAFFIC ON MY LEFT AND A HIGH-SPEED CAR APPROACHING ME FROM THE REAR - AND I HAD NOWHERE TO STEER TO! IT WAS VERY FRIGHTENING AND WE COULD HAVE BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND. *NM
WE HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE BRAKING PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN NOTED WITH THE 2010 MODELS - THE BRAKES SEEM TO PAUSE, ESPECIALLY WHEN STOPPING ON ROUGH OR SLIPPERY PAVEMENT. WE HAD NOT REPORTED THIS EARLIER, BECAUSE WE DIDN'T KNOW IF THIS WAS JUST AN ILLUSION RESULTING FROM THE HYBRID SYSTEM. NOW THAT THE RECALL IS IN FULL EFFECT, WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE SAME DEFECT THAT IS BEING REPORTED. THIS HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT ITEM SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2005. AT THIS TIME, WE HAVE DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT THE ISSUE. *TW
NEW VEHICLE HAD MASTER FAULT, CHECK ENGINE AND OTHER WARNING LIGHTS AT ODO READING 50, "REPAIRED" FAULTED AGAIN. REPLACEMENT PARTS INCLUDE CAM SENSORS, COMPUTER BOARDS, WIRING HARNESS AND NOW "MASTER COMPUTER BOARD". *NM
2005 TOYOTA PRIUS, WHEN COASTING AT HIGH SPEEDS, THE ENGINE CUTS OUT SO IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCELERATE.
THIS MORNING'S AP STORY ABOUT THE NHTSA LOOKING INTO ALLEGATIONS OF MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKING CAPABILITY WHILE TRAVELING OVER UNEVEN ROAD SURFACES, POTHOLES OR BUMPS IN 2010 PRIUSES JOGGED MY MEMORY ABOUT THIS HAVING HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES TO ME IN MY 2005 PRIUS. I CAN'T STATE DATES, BUT I'D SAY THAT EVERY 3 MONTHS OR SO, I WILL BRAKE WHERE THE ROAD IS UNEVEN, THE SLIP INDICATOR LIGHTS UP ON THE DASHBOARD, AND I FEEL A LOSS OF CONTROL JUST FOR A MOMENT UNTIL I FEEL THE CAR REGAIN CONTROL. MAYBE THAT'S JUST THE ANTILOCK BRAKES KICKING IN, BUT IT IS AN UNEASY FEELING. *TR
THE PRIUS SHUT DOWN, STOPPED USING GASOLINE POWER, WHILE I WAS IN THE PASSING LANE AND TRAVELING 70 MILES PER HOUR IN MODERATE TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE 40 IN NASHVILLE, TN. THE RED TRIANGLE, CHECK ENGINE, VSC AND A FEW OTHER WARNING SIGNALS ILLUMINATED. I MANAGED TO AVOID BEING REAR-ENDED , PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD USING BATTERY POWER, SHUT THE BATTERY POWER OFF, AND CONSULTED THE OWNER'S MANUAL. APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MINUTES PRIOR, THE ADD FUEL LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE FUEL INDICATOR DISPLAYED A SINGLE BAR. HAVING DRIVEN THE VEHICLE FOR THE PAST 8300 MILES, MY WIFE INFORMED ME THAT WE HAD ABOUT 2 GALLONS OF GAS, AND COULD EASILY TRAVEL ANOTHER FIFTY MILES. THE TEMPERATURE WAS NEAR 90 DEGREES. I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND CHOSE TO DRIVE IT OFF THE INTERSTATE. WE TRAVELED 2.5 MILES AND COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS THE BATTERY DEPLETED. I MANAGED TO SLOWLY DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO A GAS STATION AND REFUELED. THE FUEL TANK COULD ONLY ACCOMMODATE 8.1 GALLONS OF FUEL; IT HOLDS 11.7. ONCE REFUELED, THE WARNING SIGNALS DISAPPEARED AFTER 30 SECONDS, AND WE DROVE HOME. MY WIFE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, JOE HEITZ TOYOTA IN CLARKSVILLE, TN, THE NEXT DAY FOR AN EVALUATION. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE COMPUTER INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE RAN OUT OF FUEL. SINCE THERE OBVIOUSLY WAS FUEL IN THE TANK, I PRESSED THE SERVICE MANAGER FOR ANSWERS. BY THE END OF THE DAY AND AFTER CONSULTING WITH PRIUS TECHNICAL FOLKS IN CALIFORNIA, THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THAT THE FUEL BLADDER MAY HAVE COLLAPSED OVER THE SENDING MODULE THEREBY SIGNALING THE CAR'S COMPUTER THAT IT WAS OUT OF GAS, WHICH CAUSED IT TO SHUT DOWN. HE SAID TOYOTA IS LOOKING INTO THE PROBLEM AND PROVIDED A LAME SOLUTION; REFUEL THE VEHICLE BEFORE IT GETS TOO LOW. THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE ANSWER AND I IMPLORE THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY ANOMALY. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE IS IN A FATAL ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN WHILE TRAVELING AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS.
DRIVING 65 MPH ON THE FREEWAY, THE LOW-FUEL INDICATOR LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES LATER, STILL DRIVING 65 MPH, THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. "CONSUMPTION" WAS HIGHLIGHTED IN RED. THE CAR CONTINUED TO DRIVE IN ELECTRIC MODE AT 52 MPH FOR ABOUT 1.5 MILES. WHEN THE BATTERY WAS DRAINED, THE CAR CAME TO A STOP. AFTER 5 MINUTES, I HIT THE POWER BUTTON TO TURN OFF THE CAR, THEN AGAIN TO TURN ON THE CAR. THE ENGINE STARTED AND WE DROVE TO THE NEXT GAS STATION, 4 MILES AWAY. TOYOTA (1-800-331-4331) SAID TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. THE TOYOTA DEALER SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND TOYOTA HAS NOT ADVISED THEM ON A REMEDY. DEALER REFUSED TO PROVIDE ME WITH THIS AGENCY'S NAME (NHTSA). I LEFT A MESSAGE WITH "THE PRIUS TEAM" AT TOYOTA 3 DAYS AGO AND THEY HAVE NOT RETURNED MY CALL.

WHAT DID THE DEALER SAY WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE? THE WIRING WOULD PULLED FROM THE VEHICLE J. DID THE DEALER REPROGRAM THE ECU (ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT) OR ANY SOFTWARE? DON''T KNOW K. HAS THE VEHICLE HAD SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGNS 40A OR 40 D PERFORMED ON IT PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT? (NOTE: THE CONSUMER WOULD HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER IN THE MAIL NOTIFYING THEM TO BRING HIS OR HER VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR. CAMPAIGN 40A OR 40D ADDRESSED SOFTWARE ISSUES WITH THE PRIUS HYBRID VEHICLE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT.) NO L. HAS THE VEHICLE HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE THE REPAIR?CONTACT STATES HE HAS EXPERIENCED POWER FAILURE IN HIS 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED YET.
I PURCHASED A 2005 PRIUS IN JANUARY 2005. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT IT HAD ABOUT 8500 MILES ON IT. IT HAD BEEN PERFORMING WELL AND I HAD BEEN GETTING EXCELLENT GAS MILEAGE AND THE INTERNAL MILEAGE INDICATORS HAS PROVEN TO BE VERY ACCURATE. WHILE DRIVING ON SC HIGHWAY 31 AT ABOUT 60-65 MILES PER HOUR THE GASOLINE ENGINE QUIT SLOWING ME TO ABOUT 40 MILES PER HOUR. THE DASHBOARD LIT UP WITH WITH WARNING SIGNALS INCLUDING THE RED TRIANGLE, CHECK ENGINE, VSC, BREAKING SYSTEM AND I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT ELSE. A FEW MILES BEFORE THIS HAPPENED, MY FUEL INDICATOR STARTED TO BLINK, BUT WAS SURE THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE GAS SINCE I HAVE OFTEN GONE MANY MILES BEFORE FINDING GAS IN SIMILAR SITUATION AND KNEW FROM PAST EXPERIENCE, MY MILEGE,AND FUEL USAGE INDICATOR THAT I HAD ABOUT TWO GALLONS LEFT IN THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS AN UNFAMILIAR ROAD TO ME SO I CONTINUED TO TRAVEL USING THE BATTERY HOPING THAT AN EXIT WOULD APPEAR. THE BATTERY QUICKLY BECAME SO DEPLETED THAT I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TRIED TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND FOUND IT UNRESPONSIVE. AFTER A FEW TRIES IT DID POWER DOWN. I CALLED AAA FOR ASSISTANCE. DURING MY WAIT, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE, BUT IT AGAIN FAILED WITHIN A COUPLE OF MILES, BUT I WAS ABLE TO REACH AN EXIT AND PULL OFF. AFTER THE SECOND FAILURE, I TRIED TO RESTART AGAIN AND THIS TIME ONLY GOT THE RED TRIANGLE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. AAA DID ADD GASOLINE TO THE CAR, BUT THE FUEL INDICATOR CONTINUED TO BLINK AND THE BAR NEVER ROSE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO SPARKS TOYOTA IN MYRTLE BEACH, SC WHO CALLED TO SAY THAT THEY BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM IS LOW FUEL. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IT THE CASE AS THIS HAD NOT HAPPENED BEFORE WHEN THE LOW FUEL INDICATOR CAME ON.
DRIVING 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS (POV) IN TRAFFIC WHEN HYBRID SYSTEM SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY SHUT DOWN. WAS UNABLE TO RESTART VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 MINS. WHEN WAS ABLE TO RESTART "CHECK ENGINE" WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ON. NO PROPERTY DAMAGE OR INJURIES OCCURED AS A RESULT OF FAILURE.
DT: VEHICLE STALLED/DIED AND LOST POWER. THIS HAPPENED ON 08.15/2005. *AK *MR
I WAS DRIVING 20MPH WHEN A RED ALERT LIGHT CAME ON THE SCREEN ON MY PRIUS; IT SAID GPS UNDERNEATH IT SO I IGNORED IT, THINKING I WOULD BE OK SINCE I DID NOT NEED MY GPS SYSTEM. I SPED UP TO ABOUT 30MPH AND SUDDENLY WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCELERATE ALTHOUGH I WAS PRESSING DOWN ON MY ACCELERATOR. I CAME TO A STOP AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT ON A GREEN; LUCKILY THERE WAS NO COLLISION. THE ELECTRIC MODE REMAINED INTACT FOR THE NEXT 2.5HRS UNTLI THE CAR WAS TOWED SO I COULD STILL TURN THE CAR ON.
DT: CONSUMER'S VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, AND PUT HIS LIFE AT RISK. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. CONSUMER BOUGHT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM TOYOTA, AND THEY HAD NO RECORD OF THAT WHEN CALLING THEM. *AK PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT VEHICLE'S CONSUMER COMPUTER INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS LOW ON GAS BY A FLASHING GREEN LIGHT, AND THE COMPUTER WAS INDICATING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS GETTING ITS POWER FROM BOTH THE GAS AND ELECTRIC ENGINES. THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER SYSTEM DID NOT RECOGNIZE ANY COMMANDS. PRIOR INCIDENTS THE CAR DIESELED AT STOP LIGHTS SOMETIMES FOR MINUTE AND CONSUMER GOT 28MPG IN THE CITY, WHERE THE GAS ENGINE SEEMED TO BE RUNNING EVEN ON DOWNHILL STRETCHES AND WHEN STOPPED.*SB *NM
I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS, PURCHASED NEW IN OCT 2004. I WAS DRIVING ON I-57 IN ILLINOIS AT 65 MPH. TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE WAS 91F. LOW FUEL WARNING SIGNAL BEGAN TO FLASH. SINCE I PLANNED TO GAS UP ABOUT 25 MILES AWAY, I CONTINUED DRIVING. SHOULD HAVE HAD APPROXIMATELY 2 GALLONS OF FUEL LEFT. ABOUT 5 MINUTES LATER AT 65 MPH, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED RUNNING. THE "RED TRIANGLE OF DEATH" AND THE YELLOW "CHECK ENGINE" WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. REALIZED THAT THE ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVE SYSTEM WAS STILL WORKING. NOTICED THAT I WAS APPROXIMATELY 1.5 MILES FROM AN EXIT. SLOWED TO ABOUT 45 MPH AND CONTINUED TO DRIVE USING THE PRIUS' BATTERIES AND ELECTRIC MOTORS. PULLED INTO A SHELL STATION AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. BEGAN TO REFUEL. AFTER ABOUT 4 GALLONS, THE PUMP CLICKED OFF. TRIED AGAIN - IT CLICKED OFF. TRIED AGAIN AND WAS ABLE TO REFUEL NORMALLY. IN ALL, I ADDED 9.767 GALLONS. IF THE CAR HAS 11.9 GALLON TANK, THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN 2.1 GALLONS LEFT WHEN THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. UPON RESTART, SAME ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON, BUT WITHIN A FEW SECONDS THEY WENT OFF. DIGITAL FUEL GAUGE INCREASED, ONE BLOCK AT A TIME, UNTIL IT INDICATED FULL. CAR SEEMED TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY. RESUMED 65 MPH. CAR HAS CONTINUED TO OPERATE NORMALLY SINCE. THE SHUTTING OFF OF THE ENGINE WAS ABRUPT AND WOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY PROBLEM HAD SOMEONE BEEN FOLLOWING ME TOO CLOSELY, OR IF I HAD NEEDED FULL POWER TO AVOID TRAFFIC OR AN OBSTACLE. HAD READ ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER PRIUS OWNERS AND THAT SOME HAD REPORTED NOT BEING ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR. FOR THAT REASON, I CHOSE NOT TO PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER AND STOP THE CAR (FOR FEAR THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART IT), AND WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE WITH THE ELECTRIC MOTORS TO A NEARBY EXIT. HAVE NOT YET TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. HAVE NOT HAD ANY PARTS REPLACED OR SOFTWARE UPGRADED. WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE OR SERVICE INFORMATION YOU MAY KNOW OF.

THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATES THE COMPUTER DID NOT REGISTER THE EVENT, SO THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE LOCAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THIS WAS THE FIRST COMPLAINT THEY HAD RECEIVED. *TT

I HAVE A 2005 (EARLY 2ND GENERATION) PRIUS AND I EXPERIENCED THE LATEST REPORTED "DESIGN FLAW" IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM FROM DAY 1 IN 2005. THE BEST DESCRIPTION I'VE HEARD OF IT IS "INCONSISTENT BRAKING OVER ROUGH SURFACES". THAT IS, WHEN DRIVING OVER A POTHOLE OR BUMP WHEN APPLYING THE (REGENERATIVE) BRAKES, THE BUMP SEEMS TO PUSH BACK, MOMENTARILY DISENGAGING THE BRAKES. THE EFFECT IS AT BEST, UNNERVING, AND AT WORST, SCARY, DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO DO WHEN IT HAPPENS (IE, SLOWING VS TRYING TO STOP). I BROUGHT THIS EXPERIENCE TO THE ATTENTION OF MY DEALER SERVICE PERSONNEL A COUPLE TIMES OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS AND WAS MET WITH THE EQUIVALENT OF BLANK STARES AND THE SOUND OF CRICKETS. BOTTOM LINE, THIS IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM IN 2010 MODEL PRIUS ONLY. *TR
AFTER LISTENING TO PUBLICITY ABOUT THE 2010 PRIUS PROBLEM I REALIZE THAT I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM OF BRAKE FADE IN MY 2005 PRIUS. THERE IS A BRIDGE SECTION THAT I DRIVE OVER SEVERAL TIMES A MONTH. THIS BRIDGE SECTION IS 1 INCH HIGHER THAN THE ASPHALT ROAD AND ON A STEEP HILL IMMEDIATELY BEFORE A STOP SIGN. SO IF I AM BRAKING AS I HIT THE BRIDGE SECTION, I NOTICE AN IMMEDIATE BRAKE FADE. SO FOR ALL THESE YEARS, I ASSUMED IT WAS AN ABS PECULIARITY WITH CAR UNWEIGHTING. I'VE LEARNED TO BRAKE HARD IMMEDIATELY BEFORE I ENTER THE BRIDGE SECTION, RELEASE THE BRAKES AS I HIT THE EDGE OF THE BRIDGE SECTION, BRAKE HARD ON THE BRIDGE SECTION AND RELEASE AS I DROP OFF THE SECTION, THEN BRAKE TO THE STOP SIGN. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM IN OTHER SITUATIONS BUT I AM AWARE OF THE BRAKE FADE AND MIGHT BE ANTICIPATING THE PROBLEM. IT HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2005. *TR
MY PRIUS EXHIBITS REMOVAL OF ELECTRICAL AND ENGINE POWER TO THE FRONT WHEELS DURING ACCELERATION WHEN TURNING SHARPLY RIGHT OR LEFT ON A SLIPPERY SURFACE. THIS OCCURS AS SOON AS ONE OF THE FRONT WHEEL SLIPS. ORDINARILY THIS IS ONLY A MINOR AGGRAVATION, AND EASING ON THE THROTTLE USUALLY RESTORES POWER BUT IN ICING CONDITIONS IT'S DANGEROUS. THERE ARE CONDITIONS WHERE I COULD NOT MOVE THE CAR WHEN CROSSING A SMALL BERM OF SNOW (3 INCHES HIGH WHERE ONE WHEEL HAD SIGNIFICANTLY LESS TRACTION THAN THE OTHER. I HAD TO BE PUSHED OVER IT. IT APPEARS TO BE A SOFTWARE ISSUE, BUT MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER CLAIMS THEY NEVER HEARD OF IT. *TR
MY 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS' BRAKING SYSTEM ACTS THE SAME WAY AS THE 2010'S WITH THE RECALL. WHEN APPROACHING A STOP, WITH THE BRAKES DEPRESSED, IF YOU HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD THE BRAKES DISENGAGE. *TR
THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 2 WEEKS AND HAD AN EPISODE WHERE THE ENGINE STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED IT MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A MOMENTARY EVENT TO SHIFT IT INCORRECTLY FROM THE BRAKING MODE. WHEN THE CONSUMER FIRST ATTEMPTED TO PUT IT IN REVERSE, IT WOULDN'T TAKE THEN, AND IT WOULD NOT TAKE INTO THE PROPER DRIVE MODE EITHER. THE ENGINE HAD STALLED, AND WOULD NOT GO INTO DRIVE. THE CONSUMER STOPPED THE VEHICLE, AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT. THE CONSUMER HAD NOT EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS SINCE THEN. I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE, WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED. I WAS CLOSE TO AN OFF-RAMP AND WAS ABLE TO COAST OFF OF THE EXIT. AT THE BOTTOM ON THE EXIT I WAS ABLE TO START UP AGAIN BY SHIFTING INTO DRIVE.
I HAVE A 2005 PRIUS. THREE TIMES, THE CAR HAS SURGED FOR A FEW SECONDS WHILE STEPPING ON THE BRAKE. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS SLOWING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN. I REPORTED IT TO THE DEALER ON 5-25-05. I WAS TOLD THAT SOMETIMES THAT'S THE WAY THE BRAKES OPERATE. ANOTHER PUZZLING OCCURRENCE WHICH I REPORTED TO THE DEALER ON 4-25-06, WAS THAT SOMETIMES WHEN I STEP ON THE GAS, NOTHING HAPPENS, AND THEN IT SURGES FORWARD. *TR
MY 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS FAILED WITH ENGINE SHUTDOWN AT 65 MPH ON FLORIDA TURNPIKE. AFTER RESTARTING ON SHOULDER, VEHICLE WOULD ONLY ACHIEVE 52 MPH, THEN FAILED AGAIN.
DEAR NHSTA, ON MAY 20 OF 2005 I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE GAS ENGINE STOPPED WORKING AND 4 DASH WARNING/FAULTS LIGHTS CAME ON (RED TRIANGLE; CHECK ENGINE; BRAKE FAULT; VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL FAULT). I CONTINUED DRIVING FOR 3 MILES ON THE ELECTRIC MOTOR UNTIL THE BATTERY CHARGE LIGHT INDICATED NEAR COMPLETE BATTERY DISCHARGE. I TURNED OFF THE CAR, WAITED 30 SECONDS AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON. IMMEDIATELY THE GASOLINE ENGINE STARTED AND THE BATTERY BEGAN TO CHARGE. AT THIS POINT ONLY THE CHECK ENGINE AND RED TRIANGLE LIGHTS CAME ON. I DROVE TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHO SAID THAT MY PROBLEM SOUNDED LIKE THE STALLING PROBLEMS WITH THE 33 REPORTED CASES OF 2004/05 PRIUS STALLING. TOYOTA UPGRADED THE ENGINE ECU AND THE CAR HAS BEEN FINE EVER SINCE. HOWEVER, I WANTED TO LET NHSTA KNOW SO THAT THEY KNOW THAT THIS PRIUS STALLING PROBLEM AFFECTS MORE THAN JUST 33 PRIUS OWNERS. ALSO, I WORRY THAT TOYOTA DOES NOT KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT THE PROBLEM IS FIXED PREMANENTLY. THANKS, GARY BEAUPRE
WHILE DRIVING MY 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS ON HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE GASOLINE ENGINE COMPLETELY STALLED BUT THE ELECTRIC MOTOR CONTINUED TO RUN ALLOWING ME TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY, ALBEIT AT A REDUCED SPEED. I MANAGED TO DRIVE APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE TO 1.5 MILES UNTIL THE ELECTRIC MOTOR BATTERY WAS CONMPLETELY DEPLETED. THE VEHILCE WOULD NOT RESTART AND I ARRANGED TO HAVE IT TOWED. WHILE WAITING FOR THE TOW SERVICE I TRIED TO RESTART IT A NUMBER OF TIMES AND AFTER 35 - 40 MINUTES IT STARTED AND SINCE THEN HAS HAD NO ISSUES. I BELIEVE THAT WHEN IT STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY THE CRUSIE CONTROL WAS SET AND THERE WERE BETWEEN 1.6 AND 2 GALLONS OF GASOLINE REMAINING IN THE TANK. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER IF I WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC IN THE FAST LANE AS THE CAR WENT FROM 65 MPH TO 35 - 40 MPH IN SECONDS! I ALSO BARELY MADE IT OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AND WAS ACTUALLY STICKING INTO THE TRAVEL LANE SOMEWHAT WHEN THE ELCTRIC MOTOR ALSO COMPLETLY DIED. I NOTIFIED TOYOTA OF THE PROBLEM BUT NO CORRECTIVE ACTIONS WERE TAKEN AND THEY DID NOT INFORM ME OF ANY ISSUES.
BOUGHT A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS ON 5/16/05. ON THE SECOND DAY IT LOST POWER ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60+MPH. ENGINE LIGHT AND ! LIGHT ON. CAR RAN WELL ENOUGH TO TAKE TO DEALER AFTER RE-STARTING A FEW TIMES. LIGHTS REMAINED ON UNTIL RE-STARTED AT DEALER. CAR REMAINS AT DEALER.
WHILE TEST DRIVING A NEW '05 TOYOTA PRIUS I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT ITS BRAKING SYSTEM IS INADEQUATE. EMERGENCY BRAKING WHILE TURNING EASILY INDUCES UNDER-STEER BECAUSE OF THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING. AS THE AGGRESSIVE BRAKE-ASSIST TAKES OVER THERE IS "SNAP" OVER-STEER AND FRONT WHEEL LOCKUP. FOR AVERAGE DRIVERS THIS CAN RESULT IN COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL.
I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH ON HWY 41 IN FRESNO, CA WHEN MY 2005 PRIUS HAD IT'S INCIDENT. ALL THE DASH WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED, AND I SAW THAT I WAS ONLY RUNNINGL ON MY ELECTRIC MOTOR. LLUCKILY I WAS IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE GETTING READY TO MERGE ONTO ANOTHER FREEWAY, SO I PUT MY HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS ON, AND ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED BECAUSE I REDUCED MY SPEED AND THE HONDA BEHIND ME WAS IMPATIENT AND RIDING MY BUMBER. I PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY, CALLED AAA, AND BEFORE THEY GOT OUT, I TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES BECAUSE WHERE IT FINALLY DIED WAS A BAD SPOT- AND THE ENGINE KICKED RIGHT ON! I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! THE FOLLOWING MONDAY I CALLED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP (MICHAEL TOYOTA) AND THEY CHECKED FOR ANY RECALLS AND SAID THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR "DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT". THEN I HAVE BEEN HEARING ABOUT THESE OTHER CASES COMING LATELY AND IT SOUNDS LIKE I HAVE A BIGGER PROBLEM. I RETURNED TO MY TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THE 4 HOURS THEY HAD LEFT IN THE DAY WASN'T ENOUGH TIME, SO I NEED TO TAKE A DAY OFF OF WORK SO THAT I CAN DRIVE THE HOUR IT TAKES TO GET THERE AND WAIT FOR MY VEHICLE.
DT CONSUMER STATES WHILE DRIVING HIS VEHICLE, IT COMPLETELY STALLED IN TRAFFIC. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALONG WITH A FEW OTHER LIGHTS ON THE DASH ILLUMINATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STALLING. *TT *EH
WHILE CAR WAS GOING ABOUT 25 MPH, IT WENT FROM "DRIVE" TO "PARK". IT STOPPED ABRUPTLY. COULD NOT GET CAR BACK IN DRIVE EXCEPT MOMENTARILY. THE CAR'S ELECTRIC SYSTEM CYCLED ON AND OFF ON A 16 TO 20 SECOND PERIOD. THAT IS, IT WOULD BE ON AND IN PARK AND THEN SHUT OFF MOMENTARILY EVERY 18 SECONDS. IT CONTINUTED DOING THIS FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES WHEN I STOPPED MONORITING IT. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER. WHEN IT WAS EXAMINED ABOUT 2 HOURS AFTER THE INCIDENT, IT WORKED FINE AND THERE WAS NO COMPUTER FEEDBACK ON THE PROBLEM. THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT TO DO. THEY SAID TO BRING IT BACK WHEN THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS COULD BE A LIFE THREATENING GLITCH IF IT OCCURED AT FREEWAY SPEEDS IN TRAFFIC. I BELIEVE TOYOTA SHOULD PUT ALL CARS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ON THE SIDELINES UNTIL THEY FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND THEN COME UP WITH A FIX. BECAUSE OF THE REAL POSSIBILITY OF INJURIES, NHTSA SHOULD START AN INVESTIGATION AND START PUSHING TOYOTA TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.
OUR PRIUS HYBRID CAR ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. WE COULD NOT GET IT STARTED AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER TO HAVE OUR CAR REPROGRAMED.
