EVEN MINOR TREPIDATION CAUSED BY ANY UNEVENNESS IN THE SURFACE OF THE ROAD WHILE SLOWING DOWN AND APPLYING THE BRAKES WILL DISENGAGE THE BRAKES MOMENTARILY CAUSING A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND RISK OF CRASH INTO VEHICLE IN FRONT. I OBSERVED THIS PROBLEM CONSISTENTLY IN SEVERAL PRIUS RANGING FROM 2005 TO 2010 SINCE I PURCHASED MINE IN APRIL 2012. I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS TO A COUPLE OF DEALERSHIPS BUT WAS TOLD "IT IS A DRIVER'S FAULT" ...!! ALL MY FRIENDS OWNERS OF PRIUS HAVE OBSERVED THE SAME PROBLEM IN THEIR CARS.
LAST NIGHT WHILE DRIVE 1.5 HOURS HOME, THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT WOULD SHUT OFF, AND IF I NOTICED AND FLIPPED THE LIGHTS OFF THEN ON, IT WOULD COME BACK ON. IF I DIDN'T NOTICE, THEN THE PASSENGER LIGHT WOULD ALSO GO OUT LEAVING ME IN DARKNESS. I BEGAN TIMING THE INTERVAL, AND IT CAME OUT TO BE INTERMITTENT BETWEEN ONE AND TWO MINUTES, REGARDLESS OF TERRAIN, SPEED OF VEHICLE, SMOOTH OR BUMPY ROADS, STRAIGHT OR CURVY ROADS, ETC.
PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT IS INTERMITTENT. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST TWICE BEFORE AND I BELIEVE THE BULB AND SOME OTHER ELECTRONICS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER CHARGES A HUGE AMOUNT FOR THIS REPAIR.
ME AND MY FAMILY TRAVELING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH IN THE DARK WHEN A TRACTOR TRAILER ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTED TO CHANGE LANES WHEN WE WERE DIRECTLY TO THE LEFT OF IT. LUCKILY THE LANE TO OUR LEFT WAS OPEN AND WE WERE ABLE TO QUICKLY CHANGE LANES TO AVOID COLLISION. IT TURNS OUT OUR 2005 PRIUS HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING AND THE TRUCK DID NOT SEE US. HAD TO TURN LIGHTS OFF THEN ON AGAIN TO GET THEM TO WORK. THE REST OF THE WAY HOME ONE LIGHT WOULD GO OUT, THEN THE OTHER WOULD GO OUT. HAD TO TURN SWITCH OFF THEN ON AGAIN TO GET THEM TO TURN ON AGAIN. THIS IS DEFINITELY A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS CAR. WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL.
I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AND MY STEERING COMPLETELY GAVE OUT. I COULD TURN MY STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT AND TO THE RIGHT, BUT MY WHEELS WERE NOT RESPONDING TO THE MOVEMENT. THERE WAS A ROUGH NOISE AS I TRIED TO CORRECT THE STEERING BUT THERE WAS NO FOREWARNING OF THIS (I HAD BEEN DRIVING AROUND TOWN EARLIER THAT DAY JUST FINE - ON BUSY ROADS WITH HIGHER SPEED LIMITS). IT WAS VERY SCARY AND THANKFULLY, I WAS ONLY GOING 5MPH SO I JUST STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND PLACED IT IN PARK. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY AT AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP IN AUSTIN, TX AND THEY SAID THE SPLINES BROKE WHICH DISABLED THE STEERING (AND THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE STEERING RACK AND YOLK). I'M GETTING A SECOND OPINION AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY, BUT THIS MAJOR FAILURE WAS EXTREMELY ALARMING. MY PRIUS HAS APPROX 92,000 MILES ON IT, AND I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF IT FROM A MAINTENANCE STANDPOINT. I'VE NEVER HEARD OF A PROBLEM LIKE THIS BEFORE. I HAVE PLENTY OF FRIENDS WITH OLDER CARS WITH MORE MILEAGE AND NONE OF THEM HAVE EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE FAILURE OF STEERING WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. ADDITIONALLY, MY FATHER SPOKE TO A FRIEND WHO OWNS A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AT HOME AND HAS SOLD MANY PRIUS VEHICLES - HE SAID THIS WAS VERY SERIOUS AND UNCOMMON. ....UPDATED 12/30/15 *BF PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT OTHER INFORMATION YOU NEED TO ADEQUATELY LOOK INTO THIS. *JS
THE CAR KEPT SLIPPING INTO NEUTRAL WHEN WANTING TO DRIVE. PARKING BUTTON DIDN'T WORK.THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE IT.
I'M CONCERNED BECAUSE MY VEHICLE'S AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DURING A CRASH WHEREIN I COLLIDED WITH A CAR TURNING LEFT IN FRONT OF ME AT APPROXIMATELY 35-40 MPH. THE FRONT END CRUMPLED AND MY DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOORS DO NOT FULLY OPEN DUE TO THE DAMAGE TO THE FRAME OF THE CAR. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY BEING INSPECTED WITH REGARD TO DETERMINATION OF A LIKELY TOTAL LOSS. WHILE I UNDERSTAND AIRBAGS DON'T ALWAYS DEPLOY, I FELT THAT THIS MIGHT BE A CASE WHERE THEY SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED.
WE WERE ON THE OVERPASS GOING FROM HIGHWAY 87 TO US 101 NORTH IN SAN JOSE GOING ABOUT 70 MPH HEADING TO THE SAN FRANSISCO AIRPORT. IT WAS 8PM, AND VERY DARK. THE HEADLIGHTS JUST SHUT OFF, WHILE THE DASHBOARD INDICATOR SAID THAT THE LIGHTS WERE STILL ON. WE TRIED FRANTICALLY TRIED TURNING THE LIGHTS ON AND OFF AGAIN TO SEE IF THEY WOULD COME ON, AND THEY DIDN'T. WE TOOK THE NEXT EXIT AND STOPPED IN FRONT OF A HOTEL WERE WE COULD SEE THE HEADLIGHTS IN THE WINDOW, AND THEY WERE OFF. WE TURNED THE CAR OFF, COUNTED TO 10, THEN TURNED THE CAR BACK ON. THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. WE TURNED ON THE FOGLIGHTS IN CASE THE HEADLIGHTS TURNED OFF AGAIN. THEY STAYED ON ALL THE WAY TO THE AIRPORT AND ALMOST ALL THE WAY HOME. THEY TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 1 MILE, AND THEN TURNED BACK ON.
PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT WILL NOT STAY ON, IT WILL STAY ON ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND THEN IT GOES OUT ! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM ???
WHEN I AM GOING SLOW AND BRAKING, THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD WHEN THERE IS UNEVEN PAVEMENT, A POTHOLE,ETC. OFTEN IT WILL HAPPEN AT THE SAME STOP SIGNS AROUND MY HOME. THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE I PURCHASED THIS USED CAR IN JULY OF 2014. IT HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN 50 TIMES IN THE YEAR AND HALF THAT I HAVE OWNED IT.
HEAD LIGHT WILL INTERMITTENTLY GO OFF. I CAN TURN THE LIGHT SWITCH TO OFF AND THEN BACK ON AND THE HEADLIGHT WILL COME BACK ON. USUALLY THIS HAPPENED ON A STREET OR HIGHWAY WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION AND LIGHTS ARE SWITCH ON. THIS HAPPENS OFF AND ON WHEN THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN. USUALLY IT IS THE LEFT HEADLIGHT, BUT OCCASIONALLY THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT GOES OFF AS WELL. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. THE TOYOTA DEALER QUOTES $500.00 TO MAKE REPAIRS! I DID RESEARCH ON INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS PRETTY COMMON FOR CERTAIN YEARS OF THE TOYOTA PRIUS AUTOMOBILES, 2005 INCLUDED.
OUR DAUGHTER DROVE THE VEHICLE TO SCHOOL. SHE PARKED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT TURN OFF. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM WAS A PART CALLED THE COMBINATION METER. HE ADVISED THAT THE PART WAS RECALLED AND WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONTACTED BY TOYOTA. HE PROVIDED ME WITH A PHONE NUMBER FOR THE TOYOTA CORPORATIONS RECALL DEPARTMENT. I TELEPHONED TOYOTA AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT I WAS MISINFORMED BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR AND THAT THE PART WAS NOT RECALLED, BUT THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ISSUED ON THE PART IN 2012. I ASKED WHY THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RECALLED AND WAS TOLD BECAUSE IT WASN'T A SAFET MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS VEHICLE IS UNSAFE IF THIS PART FAILS. BY SURFING THE INTERNET, I FOUND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS BY OTHERS REGARDING THE SAME PROBLEM. IF MY DAUGHTER WOULD HAVE DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE HOME, PARKED THE VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE AS SHE USUALLY DOES. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT HAVE TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE IS A HYBRID AND WHEN THE BATTERY POWER WAS DEPLETED, THE GASOLINE ENGINE WOULD HAVE KICKED ON. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A DANGER, DUE TO CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING TO ANY OCCUPANTS WITHIN THE HOUSE. ADDITIONALLY, IF THE ANTI LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM NO LONGER WORKS WHEN THIS PART FAILS, THE BRAKING DISTANCE INCREASES IN AN EMERGENCY BRAKING SITUATION. WHEN THIS PART FAILS THE DASH GOES COMPLETELY BLACK, THE DRIVER IS UNAWARE THAT THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM IS NO LONGER WORKING. THE DRIVER IS ALSO UNABLE TO SEE THE SPEEDOMETER OR ANY OTHER GAUGES IN THE DASH. DUE TO RECENT DEATHS, DUE TO CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING CAUSED BY VEHICLES NOT TURNING OFF. I FEEL THAT TOYOTA IS NEGLIGENT FOR NOT TAKING MY CONCERNS MORE SERIOUSLY. TOYOTA IS AWARE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS PART, THEY ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY IN 2012.
1. SUMMER, 2011, @ 35,000 MI CAR WAS PARKED @ BOTTOM OF MY STEEP DRIVEWAY, A FEW FEET BACK FROM A RR TIE PINNED TO GROUND BY 3 REBAR IN FRONT OF CAR TO BLOCK WHEELS. I INTENDED TO BACK UP DRIVEWAY, WITH GEAR IN REVERSE, BUT WHEN I RELEASED BRAKE, CAR CATAPULTED FORWARD WITH SUCH FORCE THAT IT BENT REBAR @ RIGHT ANGLES, LIFTED RR TIE UP IN THE AIR & OVER ON ONE EDGE, & THE CAR JUMPED UP ON TOP OF IT, WHERE IT STUCK. I SAW THAT THE GEAR SHIFT HAD SLIPPED OUT OF (REVERSE) GEAR INTO NEUTRAL. CALLED AAA ROAD SERVICE TO LIFT CAR OFF. NO OTHER DAMAGE. 2. MAY 21, 2015, @ 50,000 MI. BACKING UP MY 82' LONG STEEP DRIVEWAY, I WAS TOO CLOSE TO TREE ON RIGHT 3/4 OF THE WAY UP, SO I TURNED THE WHEELS SLIGHTLY LEFT TO BACK ARC AWAY FROM IT, BUT STILL TOO CLOSE. I INTENDED TO RETURN TO BOTTOM OF DRIVEWAY TO START OVER & ADJUST ANGLE OF CAR AS DONE 100S OF TIMES. WITH BRAKE STILL DEPRESSED, I SHIFTED GEAR FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE. AS I LIFTED BRAKE, BEFORE MY FOOT COULD MOVE TOWARDS THE ACCELERATOR, SUDDENLY CAR SHOT OFF LIKE A ROCKET DOWN STEEP SLOPE TO LEFT, THROUGH 2 WOOD FENCES, OVER DRIVEWAY NEXT DOOR, INTO SWIMMING POOL FULL OF WATER - WHICH SLOWED CAR TO A STOP & SANK WITH ME IN IT. GEAR SHIFT HAD SLIPPED OUT OF (DRIVE) GEAR INTO NEUTRAL. CALLED 911. CAR TOTALLED. MIRACULOUSLY NO OTHER DAMAGE TO ANYONE ASIDE FROM MY TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE. NOTE: GEAR SHIFT WAS THE TINY KNOB ON DASHBOARD TYPE, TO MOVE WITH FINGER TIPS IN VERY SMALL RADIUS. I NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM ON THAT STEEP DRIVE W ANY OTHER CARS. I CAN REFER YOU TO PHOTO OF CAR IN SWIMMING POOL IN LOCAL NEWS PAPER; IT IDENTIFIES ADDRESS SO NOT INCLUDED HERE. I SEE IN RESEARCH ONLINE THAT OTHER OWNERS FROM AT LEAST 2004 TO 2008 COMPLAINED TO YOU ABOUT THIS SAME GEAR SLIPPAGE INTO NEUTRAL PROBLEM. WHY WEREN'T WE WARNED? ( I WAS OBLIGED TO GIVE TODAY'S DATE AS THE DATE OF INCIDENCE BY THE SITE).
THE CAR JUMPS OUT OF GEAR, OR IT WON'T GO INTO PARK. BUT IT STARTED TO DRIVES AWAY AFTER I GOT OUT OF THE CAR, OR AS I WAS GETTING OUT. THIS HAPPEN TWICE, ONCE AT THE DEALER. THE DISPLAY FOR TRANSMISSION POSITION WAS BROKEN. THE SAME DISPLAY THAT SHOWS SPEED, FUEL LEVEL AND OTHER ITEMS WAS NOT WORKING. ALSO, I COULD NOT SHUT OFF THE CAR OR REMOVE THE KEY. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPEN WAS 8/19/2015 AT A CAR WASH. THE DISPLAY WENT DEAD DURING THE WASH. WILE TRYING TO FIX THE PROBLEM, THE CAR DROVE AWAY IN REVERSE AND KNOCKED ME OVER. I HAD MINOR INJURIES. I MIGHT HAVE SOME OTHER PROBLEMS AS A RESULT OF THAT ACCIDENT. THE NEXT DAY I WANT TO THE DEALER. WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE CAR (NO COMPUTER ANALYSIS), THE SERVICE MAN TOLD ME THE DISPLAY AND COMPUTER WAS BAD. HE SAID IT HAPPENS A LOT. HE ALSO QUOTED ME A PRICE OF AROUND $700. I WENT BACK TO MY DAUGHTER HOUSE TO LOOK FOR ANOTHER DEALER AND TO RESEARCH THE ISSUE. (I WAS VISITING FROM CA). AT HER HOUSE, I NOTICED THE CAR WOULD NOT SHUT OFF AND I COULD NOT GET THE KEY OUT (THE DEALER REP TOLD ME TO PUT THE KEY IN THE SLOT). SO I JUST WENT BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM FIX IT AND PAY THE PRICE. (IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE DEALER AND ITS EMPLOYEES NEVER GAVE ME THE SAME INFORMATION AND THEY WANTED ME TO GET SO FRUSTRATED, THAT I WOULD LEAVE WITH THE CAR NOT REPAIRED. THEY SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE. AT ONE POINT, THEY CLAIMED THAT I TOLD THEM I WAS GOING TO TAKE THE CAR AWAY WITHOUT THE REPAIR. I NEVER SAID THAT! THEY DID EVERYTHING THEY COULD TO MAKE ME MAD AND SO WOULD NOT FIX THE CAR). WHEN I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERS, THE CAR DRIVE AWAY, AGAIN IN REVERSE. I HAD TO HOP ON ONE LEG TO KEEP UP AND GET BACK IN TO STOP IT. IN ETHER CASE, I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. NO DISPLAY, CAN'T SHUT IT OFF AND IT JUMPS INTO GEAR!! THAT IS A SAFETY ISSUE! LIFE AND DEATH ISSUE IT IS!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE WASHING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED 2-3 DROPS OF WATER ENTERING THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW. THE WINDOW WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED AND WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE. THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE PUSH-TO-START BUTTON WITH THE BRAKES APPLIED TO SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE, BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE CONTACT THEN SHIFTED INTO PARK AND ATTEMPTED TO EXIT THE VEHICLE WHEN THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT WAS KNOCKED TO THE GROUND BY THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR AND SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. AS A RESULT. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER FAILED TO PERFORM A DIAGNOSTIC TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL FAILURE OR THE ACCELERATION FAILURE. THE DEALER ALSO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXTENDED A WARRANTY TO COVER THE FAILURE, BUT THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS OVER THE MILEAGE LIMITATION BY 4,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 174,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO THE PARK POSITION, THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AS IT BEGAN TO ROLL AWAY. THE VEHICLE STRUCK THE CONTACT. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION, BUT THE KEY FAILED TO EJECT FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 174,000.
HEADLIGHT ON THE DRIVER SIDE KEEPS TURNING OFF EVERY COUPLE OF MINUTES. THE ONLY WAY TO TURN IT BACK ON IS TO FLIP THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH. IT LOOKS LIKE THIS IS A DEFECT IN MANY TOYOTA PRIUS 2005 MODELS. I WOULD LIKE THE DEALER TO FIX THE ISSUE EVEN IF TYE CAR IS BEYOND THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY AS THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND TURNED OFF, IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO 65 MPH WITHOUT WARNING AND CRASHED INTO A RETENTION WALL. THE FRONT AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 280,000.
CAR STARTED SKIDDING ON THE ROAD, COULDN'T TAKE CONTROL BECAUSE CAR STARTED TO SPEED UP AND THEN RAMMED INTO THE CONCRETE BARRIER, SPUN AROUND AND ENDED UP FACING ONCOMING TRAFFIC. LUCKILY, THERE WASN'T ANY CAR RIGHT BEHIND ME AND I MANAGED TO PUSH OPEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR ALTHOUGH IT WOULDN'T OPEN COMPLETELY AND OPENED JUST ENOUGH FOR ME TO SQUEEZE THROUGH AND RAN OUT OF THE CAR. AT NO TIME DID THE AIRBAG OPEN UP AT ALL. I WAS LUCKY THAT I SUSTAINED NO MAJOR INJURY EXCEPT FOR A BADLY KNOCKING MY LEFT KNEE ON THE DASH. MY QUESTION TO TOYOTA WOULD BE WHY THE AIRBAD DIDN'T OPEN! WHAT IF ANOTHER CAR HAD HIT MINE AND I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN PROTECTED BY THE AIRBAG!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE COMBINATION METER WOULD INTERMITTENTLY FAIL CAUSING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES TO STOP FUNCTIONING. IN ADDITION. THE PARKING BRAKE DID NOT FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT COMBINATION METER WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 159,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
JUST PURCHASED THIS CAR. THERE IS A PUNGENT ODOR IN CAR RESULTING IN DIZZINESS AND NAUSEOUS AND IT LEAVES A STRONG CHEMICAL ODOR ON THE HAIR AND CLOTHING FOR HOURS AFTER BEING IN THE VEHICLE. I LEFT MY HOUSE OFF NOBLE ROAD, CORA, WY AND PULLED ON TO WYOMING HIGHWAY 352 HEADED WEST AT ABOUT 11 AM; MY HUSBAND [XXX] WAS IN THE CAR WITH ME AS WERE MY DOGS. THE SLIPPERY ROAD ICON ON THE DASH CAME ON AND THERE WAS A BEEPING NOISE FROM THE DASHBOARD. I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 10 MPH, THOUGH THE ROAD IS A 65 MPH HIGHWAY. THE DAY WAS SUNNY AND I SLOWED DOWN AS THE ROAD WAS DRY AND THE LIGHT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ON AND THE BEEPING NOISE WAS A NEW SOUND FOR THIS CAR. AFTER 2 MILES I MADE A LEFT TURN AND PULLED INTO THE FIRST AVAILABLE DRIVEWAY AT MILE 2, CORA ROAD. AS I MADE THE LEFT TURN AT A SLOW SPEED, THERE WAS NOISE FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR, THEN I HEARD A SERIES OF CLUNKING NOISES FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. I STOPPED THE CAR IN THE RANCH DRIVEWAY AND READ THE PRIUS MANUAL REGARDING THE ICON AND BEEPING SYMBOLS. THEN I TRIED TO TURN THE CAR AROUND AND NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL JUST KEPT TURNING AND DID NOT TURN THE WHEELS OF THE CAR. [XXX], A RANCHER WHOSE ROAD MY CAR WAS BLOCKING, STOPPED TO HELP ME AND NOTED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NOT WORKING. HE GAVE MY HUSBAND A RIDE BACK TO OUR HOUSE TO GET OUR OTHER VEHICLE. I CALLED THE LOCAL TOWING COMPANY, T AND L TOWING, AND THEY CAME TO THE SITE. THE CAR WOULD GO FORWARD AND BACKWARD BUT THE WHEELS WOULD NOT TURN. TOM NIXON, TOW GUY, AND I WORKED THE CAR AROUND TO A POSITION WHERE I COULD DRIVE THE CAR FORWARD ON TO HIS TOW TRUCK. THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER WITH PRIUS SERVICE IS IN ROCK SPRINGS, WYOMING, ABOUT 107 MILES AWAY AND TOM TOWED THE CAR TO THEIR SERVICE LOT. I CALLED THE DEALER IN ROCK SPRINGS TO NOTIFY THEM OF MY CAR EN ROUTE TO THEM AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. I ALSO CALLED THE TOYOTA HELP LINE AT 1-800-331-4331 AND TALKED TO SHERYL MEYERS. I EXPLAINED THE INCIDENT TO HER AND SHE ASSIGNED A CASE NUMBER OF [XXX] TO MY CLAIM. WHILE DRIVING IN ANY DIRECTION IN ALL CONDITIONS, THE LEFT HEADLIGHT BEGAN FLICKERING IN MAY 2015, SHORTLY AFTER LEFT HEADLIGHT BEGAN FLICKERING. THEY DO NOT WORK AT ALL NOW.
I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING TROUBLES WITH MY FRONT PASSENGER HEADLIGHT. THE PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED ABOUT A YEAR AGO (JAN. 2014) WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR USED FROM A CAR DEALER IN TYSONS CORNER VA. I TOOK THE CAR BACK WITHIN DAYS OF NOTICING THE LIGHT KEPT GOING OUT AND ASKED THEM TO REPAIR THE ISSUE SINCE I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE CAR. THEY DID SO AND SAID THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY A FAULTY LIGHT AND REPLACED IT. IT IS A LITTLE OVER A YEAR NOW AND THE SAME LIGHT IS GOING OUT AGAIN. WHAT IS HAPPENING IS THAT WHEN I TURN THE CAR ON AND TURN ON ALL OF THE CAR LIGHTS TO DRIVE IT AT NIGHT, THEY TURN ON, BUT ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD AND UNBEKNOWNST TO ME, THE RIGHT PASSENGER LIGHT GOES OUT. BECAUSE OF THE SHAPE OF THE CAR, YOU CANNOT TELL THAT IT IS OUT. THE ONLY REASON I KNEW IT WAS OUT AGAIN WAS BECAUSE I GOT PULLED OVER AND GIVEN A TICKET. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND I HAVE READ A NUMBER OF SIMILAR OCCURRENCES ONLINE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEY HAVE SAID (AFTER LOOKING ONLINE) THAT THE ISSUE IS THE "HEADLIGHT LIGHT CONTROL ECU SUB-ASSEMBLY". BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY RISK THIS POSSES TO THE DRIVER AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD, NOT TO MENTION THE COST OF THE SINGLE ITEM TO REPAIR IT, TOYOTA SHOULD MAKE APPROPRIATE FINANCIAL ACCOMMODATIONS TO THOSE HAVING THIS TROUBLE. NORMAL WARE AND TARE ON THE VEHICLE IS REASONABLE, SUCH AS BURT OUT LIGHTBULBS BUT SYSTEMS LIKE THIS THAT WORK FOR A COUPLE DAYS AND THEN SUDDENLY DO NOT IS NOT SAFE.
BOUGHT ONE-OWNER 2005 PRIUS 11-26-2014 AFTER PAYING FOR A PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION AT A TOYOTA DEALER SHOWING COMPLETE SERVICE RECORD INCLUDING ALL RECALL CAMPAIGNS. 4-19-2015 WITHOUT WARNING ON THE EXPRESSWAY, THE ENTIRE 'COMBINATION METER DISPLAY' SIMPLY TURNED OFF, LEAVING THE CAR RUNNING IN THE BLIND, NO GAUGES/METERS/GUIDANCE OF ANY KIND. THE CAR CONTINUED TO OPERATE AND I DROVE DIRECTLY HOME AND PARKED IT. INTERNET SEARCH REVEALED THAT THIS AS A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE BY TOYOTA AFFECTING 2004-2009 PRIUS MODELS. TOYOTA ISSUED A 'WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT-ZTV' AND WARRANTY POLICY BULLETIN (BULLETIN NO. IN OUR CASE, IT EXPIRED JUST BEFORE OUR PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION/PURCHASE OF THE PRIUS AND THE DEALER INDICATED/TOYOTA CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT A TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD HAVE DISCOVERED THROUGH TOYOTA RECORDS. INSTEAD, THE OWNER HAS TO WAIT FOR THE FAILURE TO OCCUR. THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS GO OUT ON A MUCH TO FREQUENT BASIS. I HAVE REPLACED BOTH HEADLIGHTS MULTIPLE TIMES. THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT RANDOMLY TURNS OFF WHILE THE SWITCH IS STILL IN THE ON POSITION. IT IS TEMPORARILY FIXED WHEN I FLIP THE SWITCH FOR THE LIGHTS OFF AND ON AGAIN. THE LAST THREE TIMES I HAVE DRIVEN IN THE NIGHT IT HAS UNEXPECTEDLY TURNED OFF. *TR
THE AIRBAG INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD OF MY PRIUS CAME ON AND WOULD NOT GO OFF. ON 3/14/2015, I TOOK THE PRIUS TO A DEALERSHIP FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. I WAS TOLD BY THE TECHNICIAN THAT BOTH THE DRIVERS AND PASSENGER SIDE SQUIB AIRBAG HARNESS WOULD NEED REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF $4,373.07. THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY IS MAKING A SOUND EVERY TIME THE CAR IS OPERATIONAL. THERE IS A STRUCTURAL DEFLECT IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY CAUSING GAS TO LEAKED INTO THE BRAKE FLUID WHICH CAN CAUSE LOSS OF BRAKING. UPON BRINGING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD IT WAS A MIRACLE NOTHING BAD HAD HAPPENED BECAUSE THE "COMPUTER SKID ASSEMBLY" NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1570.97 FOR JUST THE PART!!! I FOUND IT VERY INTERESTING THAT THE PART WAS READILY AVAILABLE AS IF I WERE REPLACING AN OIL OR AIR FILTER. AFTER CONFIRMING THE COST WITH OTHER DEALERSHIPS, I CONSENTED TO THE WORK TO BE PERFORMED. IS THIS JUST ANOTHER "BUILT IN OBSOLESCENCE" FEATURE? END OF DAY WHEN TEMP DROPPED DASHBOARD WENT BLACK AGAIN AND THE CAR WAS DIFFICULT TO TURN OFF AT END DESTINATION. TOYOTA DEALER WAS CALLED IMMEDIATELY (SUNDAY) LEFT MESSAGE. CALLED AGAIN NEXT MORNING AFTER 10AM NO CALL RECEIVED FROM DEALERSHIP. *TR
HIGH PITCHED, STEADY TONE COMES ON AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF DRIVING AT START OF DRIVING DAY AND DOES NOT STOP UNLESS/UNTIL BRAKES ARE DEPRESSED FULLY FOR AT LEAST 10SEC., WHICH CAUSES TONE TO STOP. STARTS UP AGAIN AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF DRIVING, SOMETIMES LESS AND RECYCLES. REGULAR BRAKING SEEMS TO WORK, BUT NOT ABS AND ABS LIGHT, VSC ! LIGHTS ARE CONTINUOUSLY ON.

STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN. PULLED INTO INTERSECTION OF ARTERIAL. DIDN'T SEE CROSSING TRAFFIC. COLLIDED WITH CROSSING VEHICLE. ENTIRE FRONT END OF PRIUS HIT REAR QUARTER PANEL OF PICKUP TRUCK. THE FRONT END OF THE PRIUS WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. ANY AND ALL AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY IN PRIUS.

IT BEGAN HAPPENING ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND NOW HAPPENS EVERY TIME I START THE CAR. IT ALSO BEGAN HAPPENING AT STOPLIGHTS AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHEN I WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE ONTO A FAST HIGHWAY FROM A STOPLIGHT LAST WEEK. IT TAKES UP TO 10 ATTEMPTS TO KEEP IT IN DRIVE OR REVERSE NOW FROM A STOPPED POSITION, AND I NEVER KNOW WHEN OR FOR HOW LONG IT WILL HAPPEN. OTHER THAN THIS, MY CAR IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND HAS NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS. I LOOKED UP THE ISSUE ONLINE, AND FROM WHAT A LOT OF OTHER PRIUS DRIVERS SAY, IT SOUNDS LIKE A MAJOR ISSUE WITH THE SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY (SEE BELOW FOR LINKS TO FORUMS WHERE MANY OTHERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE). THIS FIX COSTS A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS, AND IT SEEMS COMMON IN THE 2004-2009 PRIUS. THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT HAS GONE OUT 3 TIMES IN A 3 YEAR PERIOD. EACH TIME THE BULB HAS BEEN REPLACED AT SIGNIFICANT EXPENSE ($300 AT THE DEALERSHIP), BUT HAS GONE OUT AGAIN AFTER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS 11/2014. SINCE THEN WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO USE THE CAR AT NIGHT DUE TO THE OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IT PRESENTS. WE CANNOT AND WILL NOT CONTINUE TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO REPLACE THESE BULBS WHEN THERE IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN THE SYSTEM. BASED ON THE HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR REPORTS I HAVE SEEN ONLINE ABOUT THIS VERY ISSUE, I KNOW MY STORY IS NOT UNIQUE. I REQUEST THAT A RECALL BE ISSUED FOR THE AFFECTED MODEL YEARS, WHICH INCLUDES 2005!
ON START UP THE COMBINATION METER FAILED TO OPERATE. SINCE THE COMBINATION METER PRESENTS BULK OF THE CRITICAL VEHICLE INFORMATION IT PRESENT A HAZARD TO THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE. IT IS A KNOWN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM AND WAS FIRST OBSERVED ON MY 2005 PRIUS APPROXIMATELY THREE YEARS AGO, HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM CAN CLEAR ITSELF. WHEN IT FIRST OCCURRED I BROUGHT IT TO THE SUN TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT, 3001 U.S. 19 HOLIDAY, FL (727) 478-0070 FOR SERVICE. THE SERVICE PERSONAL NOTICED THE PROBLEM, RECYCLED THE POWER ON THE VEHICLE, THEN THE PROBLEM CLEARED ITSELF. THEY SAID AT THAT TIME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM UNLESS IT HARD FAILS. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE HAD IT INTERMITTENTLY FAIL AND CORRECT ITSELF. I DISCOVERED THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN DESIGN DEFECT AND THAT A WARRANTY EXTENSION HAD BEEN ISSUED BY TOYOTA MOTOR SALE, USA WHICH WOULD COVER REPAIR OF THE VEHICLE. I EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE AGAIN ON 11/18/2014. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE IT TO SUN TOYOTA. THEY EXAMINED THE PROBLEM, I POINTED OUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT THEY SAID THE VEHICLE WAS NOW OUTSIDE OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO CLEARWATER TOYOTA, 21799 US HIGHWAY 19 N, CLEARWATER, FL 33765 (727) 799-1234, AND THEY TOO SAID IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. AS A LAST RECOURSE I CALLED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER. THEY ASSIGNED A CASE TO ME BUT THEY TOO SAID THE PROBLEM IS OUT OF WARRANTY. *TR
THE RIGHT SIDE HEADLIGHT GOES OUT MULTIPLE TIMES FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I HAVE TO TURN THE LIGHTS OFF- THEN BACK ON--IT WILL COME BACK ON--ONLY TILL IT GOES OUT AGAIN. *TR
2005 PRIUS HID HEADLIGHTS GO OUT WHILE DRIVING AND CONTINUE TO GO OUT INTERMITTENTLY AS THEY WILL RELIGHT IF CYCLED ON AND OFF. REPLACED BULB AND ISSUE CONTINUES. *TR
I PURCHASED FOUR NEW HIFLY HF201 TIRES, SIZE 185/65R15, ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2014. ON OCTOBER 21, 2014, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME ON THE FREEWAY. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF HOLES -- ONE AS LARGE AS A BASEBALL -- ALONG THE OUTER SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE. AS PREVIOUSLY STATED, THE TIRES WERE A LITTLE OVER ONE MONTH OLD, WERE PURCHASED NEW, AND WERE PROFESSIONAL INSTALLED. I DRIVE A LOT FOR MY WORK AND HAVE TWO KIDS, WHO ARE OFTEN IN THE CAR WITH ME. MY DAUGHTER IS ABOUT TO GET HER LICENSE AND WILL BE DRIVING MY CAR, AND I'M VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THESE TIRES. THE DEALER WHO SOLD ME THE TIRES GAVE ME A NEW TIRE, FREE OF CHARGE, TO REPLACE THE ONE THAT FAILED, BUT I HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN THESE TIRES. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING SINCE I WAS 16 (I'M NOW 52) AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN A TIRE FAIL LIKE THIS ONE DID. 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED AS SHE PULLED INTO PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED OUT OF HER CONTROL AND CRASHED INTO A STONE WALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. AS SHE BACKED INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED IN REVERSE, OUT OF HER CONTROL. CONSEQUENTLY, SHE JOT A GARAGE DOOR. *JB
