FRONT TIRES CHIPPING ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. TOLD TO GET THEM ROTATED AND ALIGNMENT. 6 LUG NUTS BROKE OFF DURING THE ROTATION AND THE ALIGNMENT WAS NOT THAT FAR OFF. TOLD THE TIRES WHERE THE WRONG ONES FOR THAT HEAVY OF A VEHICLE. TOOK TO THE DEALER AND HE LAUGHED AT ME AND SAID THEY WOULD LOVE TO CHARGE ME TO REPLACE ALL MY LUG NUTS AND THOSE WHERE THE RIGHT TIRES FOR THE VEHICLE AND HE SAID I WAS LUCKY TO GET 35,000 MILES OUT OF THEM BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE ONLY GOT 25,000 MILES WITH THE TIRES HE THEN TRIED TO SELL ME A NEW SET OF TIRES. FOUR DAYS LATER THE CAR DECIDED TO DRIVE ITSELF INTO A TREE AT 20 MILES AN HOUR. NO AIR BAGS DEPLOYED BUT THE CAR WAS TOTALED. *KB
I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AS MANY OTHER 2010 PRIUS OWNERS. THE BRAKES FAIL BRIEFLY WHEN DRIVING OVER LARGE POTHOLES LOCATED ON A GRADE. I HAVE DISCUSSED THE PROBLEM WITH A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT UNTIL A RECALL/SOLUTION IS ISSUED THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO. THEY TOLD ME TO BRAKE HARDER WHEN DRIVING OVER POTHOLES TO COMPENSATE FOR THE PROBLEM; THE BRAKES, HOWEVER, DO NOT FAIL WITH EVERY POTHOLE. IT SEEMS LIKE THE POTHOLES HAVE TO BE A CERTAIN SIZE, YET FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT, IT'S EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO JUDGE THE SIZE OF THE POTHOLE AND THUS IF THE CAR WILL LOSE BRAKING POWER. SO, SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES FOR EVERY POTHOLE IS JUST AS DANGEROUS AS NOT SINCE STOPPING TOO QUICKLY CAN CAUSE A REAR-END ACCIDENT. I LIVE IN A CITY OVERWHELMED WITH HILLS AND POTHOLES SO THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS NEARLY EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE CAR. IT HAS GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I AM FEARFUL TO DRIVE MY CAR SINCE I HAVE HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS AND KNOW THAT UNLESS THIS PROBLEM IS FIXED, IT WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. BRIEFLY LOSING BRAKING POWER MAY SEEM INSIGNIFICANT BUT UNTIL YOU HAVE ACTUALLY DRIVEN THE CAR AND EXPERIENCED THE LACK OF CONTROL THE ONLY COMPARISON THAT I CAN MAKE IS DRIVING ON ICE. YOU FEEL UTTERLY HELPLESS FOR THE TIME THAT THE CAR IS OUT OF YOUR CONTROL, EVEN IF IT'S ONLY A FEW SECONDS, DURING WHICH TIME YOU ARE LEGALLY AND MORALLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT YOUR CAR DOES OR HITS. THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER ROAD HAZARDS AND SAFETY CONCERNS, WHETHER OR NOT MY CAR IS GOING TO STOP WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES SHOULD NOT BE ONE OF THEM. I IMPLORE YOU, PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM AND REQUIRE THAT TOYOTA TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR FIXING IT AND ENSURING THE SAFETY OF PRIUS OWNERS, PEDESTRIANS AND OTHER DRIVERS. THANK YOU.
I HAD BEEN HEARING A LOT OF GRINDING NOISES THAT JUST GOT WORSE. WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALER, THEY DISCOVERED THAT MY BRAKE PADS HAD FAILED/FROZEN. THEY REPLACED MY PADS AND MACHINED MY ROTORS. THEY COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHY A CAR I HAD FOR ONLY A LITTLE OVER A YEAR HAD THIS PROBLEM. THEY AT FIRST BLAMED MY DRIVING, AND THEN THE ROADS (I.E. TOO MANY GRAVEL ROADS). NOW, AT 68,300 MILES THOSE PADS HAVE NOW FAILED AGAIN. ONE IS COMPLETELY WORN DOWN AND THE ROTOR IS NOW RUSTED THROUGH. NO ONE CAN EXPLAIN WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. WHEN I DEMANDED AN ANSWER, THEY TOLD ME THAT A "BULLETIN" HAD GONE OUT TO THE DEALERS ONLY STATING THAT DUE TO THE PADS FAILING, THEY WERE "REDESIGNING" THEM. BUT, THEY WOULD ONLY REPLACE FOR FREE THOSE THAT FELL UNDER THE 36,000 MILE WARRANTY. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY, IN LESS THAN 69,000 MILES I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THIS REPAIR DONE NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE. THEY TELL ME NO OTHER OWNER HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM, BUT I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE. CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS TYPE, AND WHAT CAN BE DONE TO RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM. *TR
SECOND OCCURRENCE OF THIS PROBLEM IN THREE WEEKS. DRIVING DOWNHILL ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AT 25 MPH, SLOWING TO A STOP WITHOUT APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR. SUDDENLY LOST ENGINE POWER. APPLIED ACCELERATOR, NO RESPONSE. CONTINUED TO LOSE SPEED AS I ROLLED SILENTLY DOWNHILL TOWARD THE INTERSECTION. APPLIED BRAKES AND STOPPED. RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND IT STARTED UP FINE. THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT ALSO OCCURRED ON A DOWNHILL GRADE, ON AN EXIT RAMP FROM AN PARKING GARAGE. FORTUNATELY BOTH INCIDENTS HAPPENED AT LOW SPEED AND NOT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. I PREVIOUSLY REPORTED THE FIRST INCIDENT. TOYOTA DEALER CHECKED VEHICLE AFTER EACH INCIDENT AND COULD NOT REPLICATE THE INCIDENT OR FIND A COMPUTER CODE THAT WOULD EXPLAIN IT. SINCE THIS WAS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE AND WAS FAMILIAR TO ME, AND SINCE I WAS NOT IN TRAFFIC, I LET IT HAPPEN WHILE OBSERVING MY OWN ACTIONS, TRYING TO CHECK FOR DRIVER ERROR. MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE BRAKE.THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE. WHILE THE CAR WAS SLOWING, I TRIED PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR DEEPLY AND THEN PUMPING THE ACCELERATOR TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN.. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE, AND NO SOUND. THE SAME WAS TRUE THREE WEEKS AGO-NO RESPONSE TO PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR, EVEN DEEPLY, AND NO SOUND. THREE WEEKS AGO, THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, I ALSO TRIED CYCLING THROUGH THE "MODES" (EV, PRIUS, ECO, POWER) WITH NO EFFECT. EACH TIME, I HIT THE POWER BUTTON TO POWER OFF, AND THEN I HIT IT AGAIN TO RESTART. POWERING OFF AND THEN RESTARTING, BOTH TIMES, SEEMED LIKE "REBOOTING" A COMPUTER. FORTUNATELY TRAFFIC CONDITIONS BOTH TIMES GAVE ME AMPLE TIME TO REBOOT. WILL THIS HAPPEN AGAIN? *TR
THIS WAS APPROXIMATELY THE DATE WHEN MY FIRST HEADLIGHT BLEW. THE OTHER HEADLIGHT BLEW WITHIN A COUPLE MONTHS. I WENT FOR THREE YEARS CHANGING HEADLIGHTS EVERY SIX MONTHS OR SO. TWICE, BOTH HEADLIGHTS BLEW AND I HAD TO UNSAFELY DRIVE HOME (70 MILES) WITH MY BRIGHTS ON. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS MODEL AND YEAR HAD A WIRING HARNESS "BULLET" AND THE COST TO REPLACE IT WAS ON ME. AT THE TIME, THAT WAS ALMOST $400, WHICH I DID NOT HAVE. THIS ISSUE HAS CAUSE ME TO REPLACE ONE (SOMETIMES BOTH) HEADLIGHTS EVERY SIX MONTHS (IF I'M LUCKY TO GO THAT LONG). IT HAS ALSO CAUSED THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING TO OVERHEAT AND HAS MADE THE INSIDE OF THE HOUSING "FUZZY." THIS, IN TURN, MAKES IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE IN THE DARK WITH JUST MY DIM LIGHTS ON SO DRIVING AT NIGHT IS DANGEROUS. TOYOTA NEEDS TO MAKE THIS A RECALL BECAUSE IT IS DANGEROUS. BOTH HEADLIGHTS GOING OUT AT ONE TIME BECAUSE OF A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION. HAVING TO DRIVE WITH MY BRIGHTS ON CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC. DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH MY DIMS ON IS LIKE DRIVING WITH NO LIGHTS ON AT ALL.
CAR STOP ON CROWED WARNING APPERED ON DASH HYBID OVER HEATING CAR STOP. HAD TO RESTAT CAR. BY TIME PULLED TO SHOULDER WARNING LIGHT WHENT OFF. CAR SMELLED OF BURNING THIS HAPPEN ON FRIDAY ON SAT BROUGH CAR TO SANTA MONICA THEY HAD NO ANSWER. AS NEEDED MORE INFO HAD CAR TOWED ON MONDAY LEFT CAR TILL SAT. THEIR DIAGNOSIS USING GAS AND BRAKE AT SAME TIME HOW DO YOU DO THIS WITH ONE RIGHT FOOT? . YOU NEVER DRIVE WITH THE LEFT FOOT COMPUTOE IS IN ERROR
I WAS DRIVING WITH TO PASSENGERS ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AT 65 MPH WHEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE FROM UNDER THE CAR. THE PLASTIC FRONT ENGINE COVER HAD COME LOOSE AND WAS DRAGGING ON THE PAVEMENT. A AAA MECHANIC REMOVED THE PART AND THE TOYOTA DEALER IS REPLACING IT AT NOT CHARGE. I THINK IT IS A SAFETY DEFECT.
EXITING FROM A PARKING GARAGE. AFTER PASSING THROUGH THE PAY LINE, I HEADED DOWN THE EXIT RAMP TOWARD THE STREET. THE VEHICLE REFUSED TO ACCELERATE AS I PUSHED ON THE ACCELERATOR. . IT DID VERY SLOWLY ACCELERATE TO 11 MPH AND THEN STARTED TO DECELERATE. I STOPPED THE CAR ON THE RAMP, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTARTED IT. AFTER THAT, EVERYTHING WAS FINE, AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME. . IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHILE I WAS TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HAZARDOUS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING, WHEN VEHICLE IS COASTING (DECELERATING) IN ECO MODE/ENGINE OFF AND BRAKES ARE APPLIED UNDER SPECIFIC CONDITIONS SUCH AS PASSING OVER A MAN-HOLE COVER OR POTHOLE THE FOLLOWING OCCURS: CAR DECELERATES, AS WHEEL/TIRE HITS AN ANOMALY IN THE ROAD SURFACE THE BRAKES MOMENTARILY FAIL AND THE CAR SURGES FORWARD AS THE ENGINE STARTS. THE SENSATION IS A LOSS OF BRAKING FORCE, PLUS MOMENTARY SURGE IN THE FORWARD DIRECTION. REACTION TO THIS SITUATION IS MILD PANIC AND OVERBRAKING, (LITERALLY SLAMMING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL). THIS PROBLEM CAN BE RECREATED FAITHFULLY AT ONE ROAD CLOSE TO A STOPSIGN/INTERSECTION. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED FOR MONTHS. RECENTLY (11/30/11) WHEN FOLLOWING A CAR ON THIS SPECIFIC ROAD THE CAR STOPPED ABRUPTLY DUE TO AN ANIMAL JARTING INTO THE ROAD. I APPLIED THE BRAKES, BRAKE ANOMALY OCCURRED AND FELT I COULD NOT STOP IN TIME. EVASIVE DRIVING MEASURES FORCED ME INTO THE ON-COMING TRAFFIC LANE TO AVOID A COLLISION. TOYOTA UNWILLING TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AT THE DEALER OR CORPORATE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH ON A BUMPY ROAD, HE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION BUT THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS IN INCLEMENT WEATHER AND TRYING TO DECELERATE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP MOVING AND IT CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES FROM EITHER VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TOWED BECAUSE IT WASN'T A MAJOR CRASH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS THEN CONTACTED AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF ANY FAILURES IN REGARDS TO THE BRAKES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 65,000. UPDATED 08/31/2011 *LN *TR
CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF SIDEWALL WHILE DRIVING. DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT DUE TO LOW SPEED AT TIME OF FAILURE. NO OBVIOUS SIGNS OF ROAD HAZARD PENETRATION AND/OR CONTACT. PRODUCT IS IDENTIFIED ON SIDEWALL AS YOKOHAMA AWD 833 (DID NOT SEE IN DATABASE). IN ADDITION TO THE DOT#, THERE WAS ANOTHER 'SERIAL #' OR SOMETHING ON THE TIRE - N5P2210. *TR
CAR ABS LIGHT COMES ON, AND AT THE SAME TIME VEHICLE LOSES BRAKE ASSIST OR BRAKE ASSIST BECOMES UNEVEN. CAR HAS HAD THREE BRAKE LIGHT FAILURES - 1 WITH PREVIOUS OWNER AND 2 WITH CURRENT OWNER. FIRST FAILURE WAS REPAIRED BY RESETTING THE COMPUTER, WE THINK. WITH CURRENT OWNER, DEALER HAS REPLACED THE ANTILOCK SENSOR TWO TIMES, AND WITH THE SECOND SENSOR REPLACEMENT TOYOTA NOW HAS PRONOUNCED THE VEHICLE AS SAFE. SINCE THE BRAKES FAILED AFTER THE FIRST SENSOR REPLACEMENT, WE HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED WITH THE SECOND SENSOR REPLACEMENT. WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT VEHICLE SAFETY, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE CAR IS FREQUENTLY DRIVEN IN HEAVY WASHINGTON BELTWAY TRAFFIC. TYPICALLY CAR RUNS FOR SOME TIME AND THEN FAILS, SO WE DO NOT KNOW IF AND WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. DEALER AND TOYOTA HAVE BEEN UNSUPPORTIVE TO OUR CONCERNS. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO RAPID ACCELERATION ISSUES *TGW THE CONSUMER WANTS TO KNOW DID THE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER EXAMINE THE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR, BRAKING SYSTEM AND CRUISE CONTROL. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND OR SLOW DOWN. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE DRIVER HAD TO USE THE PARKING BRAKE TO STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS SCHEDULED FOR A SECOND REPAIR. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 97,000.
MY 2010 PRIUS LURCHES FORWARD WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED AND I HIT A BUMP OR OTHER UNEVEN SURFACES. *TT
THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE PART OF THE LARGER TOYOTA RECALL ON BRAKES THAT WAS ANNOUNCED EARLIER THIS YEAR. AFTER A FEW THOUSAND MILES, I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES GAVE WAY IF THE PRIUS HITS A BUMP OR POTHOLE. TOYOTA'S STATEMENT THAT "CUSTOMERS ARE PERCEIVING INCONSISTENT BRAKE FEEL DURING SLOW AND STEADY APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES ON ROUGH OR SLICK ROAD SURFACES" IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. THE BRAKES DON'T ACTUALLY WORK WHEN YOU ARE DECELERATING AND HIT A BUMP, WHICH IS PROBLEMATIC WHEN YOU LIVE IN A CITY NOTORIOUS FOR POTHOLES. I REPORTED THIS ISSUE EARLY ON TO MY DEALER, AND HAVE SINCE FOLLOWED UP, EACH TIME BEING MET WITH THE SAME RESPONSE: THERE ARE NO REPORTS ON THIS ISSUE. FOR WHATEVER REASON, TOYOTA FEELS THAT ONLY CERTAIN VIN LOT NUMBERS MERIT THE RECALL, BUT I CAN ASSURE THEM THE PROBLEM IS MORE WIDESPREAD. MOST OWNERS I'VE TALKED TO HAVE TRIED TO ACCOMMODATE THE PROBLEM BY BEING AWARE OF BUMPS WHEN COMING TO A STOP, BUT AT SOME POINT SOMEONE WILL INJURE OR KILL SOMEONE ELSE AS A RESULT OF THIS BRAKING ISSUE. *TR
SUDDEN LOSS OF BRAKING WHILE SLOWING DOWN WHILE GOING OVER A BUMP. APPARENTLY THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING FAILS, AND THE CAR RELIES ON ONLY FRICTION BRAKING WHEN GOING OVER A BUMP. THIS GIVES THE FEELING OF BRAKE FAILURE AND UNINTENDED ACCELERATION, AND THE ONLY WAY TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT IS TO PUSH HARD ON THE BRAKES. THIS HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY, AND HAS SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW. THE TOYOTA ABS ECU FLASH WAS PERFORMED, AND MADE LITTLE OR NO DIFFERENCE.THIS IS VERY DISCONCERTING TO SAY THE LEAST, AND WILL LEAD TO ACCIDENTS. TOYOTA CLAIMS THAT THIS IS THE "NORMAL" OPERATION OF THE ABS SYSTEM - IN REALITY IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LOSS OF TRACTION. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, I HAVE EXPERIENCED ISSUES WITH THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATING WHILE I'M PRESSING THE BRAKES. SPECIFICALLY, THIS APPEARS TO OCCUR WHEN BRAKING ON UNEVEN SURFACES (IE CONSTRUCTION AREAS, POT HOLES, ETC.). THIS CAN OBVIOUSLY BECOME A DEADLY SITUATION IF ONE IS TRYING TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND WITH THIS PROBLEM RUN INTO THE CAR/VEHICLE AHEAD. MOST RECENTLY THIS OCCURRED ON THE SURFACE STREETS IN LOW SPEED, IN TRAFFIC. IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR LURCHES AHEAD WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE PEOPLE AT TOYOTA THAT I WAS MAKING THIS UP. I CAN RECREATE IT GIVEN THE RIGHT SURFACE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED AS HE WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE, HE CRASHED INTO A WALL BECAUSE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL ENGAGED. THE CONTACT STATED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND BRAKE PEDAL WAS NOT POSITIONED PROPERLY. THE CONTACT TRIED TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND HIS FOOT MOVED OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR AND UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE MANUFACTURER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THE SPACE BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDAL MEET THEIR SPECIFICATIONS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 2,600. I TRAVEL QUITE A BIT THESE DAYS AND ON MY WAY HOME FROM COACHELLA MUSIC FESTIVAL, MY BRAKES GAVE OUT. I MEAN TO SAY, PUSHING THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN, NO RESISTANCE, NO SLOWING, A COMPLETELY LIMP PEDAL....UNTIL I REPEATEDLY STOMPED ON IT AND THE CAR LOCKED AND SKIDDED TO A STOP, FEET AWAY FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IVE HAD THE CAR SINCE AUGUST 09' AND CURRENTLY HAVE 43K MILES ON IT. I KNOW THATS A LOT, AND ITS UNFORTUNATELY OUTSIDE OF MY WARRANTY NOW, BUT I WANTED TO LOG IT HERE, AS SOON AS I COULD. IT STARTED ONE DAY BEFORE THE FREEWAY INCIDENT, WHENEVER I WOULD DEPRESS THE PEDAL, A LOUD HIGH PITCHED SQUEAK WOULD COME OUT. I DIDNT THINK MUCH OF IT OUTSIDE OF "BETTER GET THAT LOOKED AT" BUT DIDNT NOTICE ANY BRAKE FAILURE. THE NEXT MORNING, I TURNED ON THE CAR AND EVERY DASHBOARD LIGHT CAME ON AND A FAST CONSISTANT BEEPING WENT ON FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES, DURING WHICH TIME THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD ZERO RESISTANCE. I SAT THERE WITH A SERIOUS WTF LOOK ON MY FACE, WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE, THE DASH LIGHTS WENT AWAY, AS DID THE BEEPING, AND THE CAR DROVE AS NORMAL WITH FULL REGULAR BRAKE PRESSURE (BESIDES THE SQUEAK). I RECEIVED A CALL BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP. THEY SAY IT'S GOING TO BE $3K FOR A MASTER CYLINDER REPLACEMENT AND THAT TOYOTA CORPORATE WOULDN'T AID IN THE COST, DESPITE MY HYBRID WARRANTY STILL COVERING THE HYBRID ECU (THE MASTER CYLINDER UNIT INCLUDES THE ECU). [XXX] (MY DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER) SAID HERSELF THAT IT WAS NOT MY FAULT AND THAT THE PART IS NOT REPAIRABLE, "IT EITHER WORKS, OR IT DOES NOT. IT MUST BE REPLACED". THIS COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC, HAD I BEEN ANY CLOSER TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE FAILURE OF ONE PART (WHICH FAILED THROUGH NO FAULT OF THE CUSTOMER) RENDERING THE BRAKES NEARLY USELESS IS TOO SCARY NOT TO REPORT HERE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AFTER SITTING IDLE FOR A FEW DAYS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE BATTERY BEING UNUSED FOR MORE THAN 10 DAYS. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE BATTERY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED BEFORE ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO SIT IDLE FOR SO LONG. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AFTER RECEIVING A JUMP START. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 6,500.
WHEN APPLYING LIGHT TO MODERATE BRAKING IN PREPARATION TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN, I WENT OVER SOME BUMPY PAVEMENT AND THE CAR SEEMED TO LURCH FORWARD. IT WAS PROBABLY A LOSS OF BRAKING RATHER THAN ACTUAL ACCELERATION, BUT IT WAS VERY DISCONCERTING AND I'M LUCKY IT DIDN'T CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I NOW HAVE OVER 49,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND THIS HAS HAPPENED ON QUITE A FEW OCCASIONS. I KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL ON SOME 2010 PRIUS VEHICLES FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT MY CAR WAS NOT RECALLED. MY DEALER SAYS THERE IS NO "SOFTWARE FIX" FOR THIS PROBLEM. I FIND IT UNACCEPTABLE THAT TOYOTA DOESN'T HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THIS AS IT IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE. IT'S JUST PURE LUCK THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH POSSIBLE INJURIES OR WORSE. I INTEND TO PURSUE THIS AGAIN WHEN I BRING THE CAR IN FOR THE 50,000 MILE SERVICE AND INVERTER RECALL, BUT I'M NOT VERY HOPEFUL. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 4 OIL CHANGES THE OIL ACCESS DOOR BREAKS OFF THE VEHICLE. THE OIL HAS BEEN CHANGED 9 TIMES IN MY PRIUS AND AFTER 4 OIL CHANGES THE OIL ACCESS DOOR HAS NOW BROKEN OFF TWICE. EACH TIME I HEARD IT BREAK LOOSE LIKE I DROVE OVER SOME DEBRIS AND I COULD SEE IT IN MY REARVIEW MIRROR GO FLYING ACROSS THE HIGHWAY LANES. THE OIL ACCESS DOOR DOES NOT HAVE A HINGE. IT IS ALL PLASTIC AND IS BENT/FOLDED TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE OIL FILTER AND DRAIN PLUG. I CHANGED THE OIL THE FIRST 4 TIMES AND THE DEALER COMPLAINED I WAS DOING SOMETHING WRONG. THE DEALER WAS RELUCTANT TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE UNDERCOVER ASSEMBLY, STATING THEY WOULD ONLY DO IT ONE TIME. THE DEALER CHANGED MY OIL THE NEXT 4 TIMES AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN RIGHT BEFORE I SCHEDULED MY 5TH OIL CHANGE. AFTER THE SECOND OCCURRENCE, I RETRIEVED THE OIL ACCESS DOOR TO CONFIRM SINCE THE VEHICLE IS SO LOW YOU CANNOT SEE IT UNDER THE CAR UNLESS IT IS RAISED UP.

THIS INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE PURCHASING THE CAR, BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL LAST WEEK (9/6/2013) THAT I BECAME TERRIFIED AS I ALMOST HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. WHENEVER MY PRIUS RUNS OVER A POTHOLE, BUMP, UNEVEN SURFACE, OR DEEP MANHOLE COVER AS I AM BRAKING TOWARDS AN INTERSECTION TO COME TO A STOP (FOR ME, ALL THESE INCIDENTS OCCURRED WHEN I APPROACHED AN INTERSECTION) THE BRAKES STOP WORKING FOR A BRIEF MOMENT AND SUDDENLY MY CAR JERKS FORWARD, LURCHES FORWARD, OR ACCELERATES. I HAVE TO PRESS DOWN MY BRAKES REALLY HARD TO THE FLOOR TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN THIS HAPPENS. WHEN THIS FAILS, I IMMEDIATELY RELEASE THE BRAKE AND RE-APPLY VERY HARD TO THE FLOOR TO STOP THE CAR. IN THESE MOMENTS IT BECOMES SCARY AS I AM NEVER SURE IF THE CAR WILL COME TO A STOP BEFORE THE INTERSECTION. LAST WEEK, I WAS APPROACHING A BUSY INTERSECTION WHILE BRAKING AND I RAN OVER A UNEVEN POTHOLE COVER/FILLER AT ABOUT 5 TO 15 MPH WHICH CAUSED MY CAR TO ACCELERATE TO LIKE 20 OR 25 MPH! I HAD TO BRAKE VERY HARD IN ORDER TO STOP MY CAR AND SWERVE TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THIS PROBLEM ONLY OCCURS WHEN MY RIGHT SIDE TIRES HIT THE UNEVEN SURFACE, MANHOLE COVER, POTHOLES, BUMPS, ETC. I HAVE NOT HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE IT HAPPENED WITH THE LEFT TIRES. DRIVING ON A RAIN COVERED ROAD AND HIT A ROUGH SPOT IN THE ROAD. BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE AT ALL FOR ABOUT 1 SECOND. WAS ABLE TO STOP AFTER THAT AND JUST AVOIDED REAR ENDING A CAR AT A STOP SIGN.
WHILE DRIVING MY 3 WEEK OLD 2011 TOYOYA PRIUS WITH 1700 MILES ON THE ODOMETER ON THE FREEWAY DRIVING MY DAUGHTER BACK TO SCHOOL MY REAR PASSENGER SIDE YOKOHAMA AVID TIRE EXPERIENCED A BLOWOUT. AFTER SUCCESSFULLY MANEUVERING THE CAR OFF OF THE FREEWAY AND TO A SAFE LOCATION I INSTALLED THE SPARE DONUT AND THEN INSPECTED THE TIRE. THE INSIDE SIDEWALL BURST OPEN AND NO ROAD HAZARD WAS PRESENT. I FILED A CLAIM WITH YOKOHAMA TIRES AND THEY HAD ME HAVE THE TIRE INSPECTED BY DISCOUNT TIRE IN SCOTTSDALE, AZ. THEIR INSPECTION SUGGESTED A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT SINCE THEY COULD NOT LOCATE ANY PUNCTURES OR OTHER TYPE OF ROAD HAZARD. AT THE TIME OF THE BLOWOUT I WAS 75 MILES FROM FLAGSTAFF, AZ, MY FINAL DESTINATION ON A SUNDAY LATE AFTERNOON AND COULD NOT LOCATE AN OPEN TIRE DEALER OR TOYOTA DEALER THAT WAS OPEN SO I CONTINUED ON THE DONUT AT 50 MPH TO FLAGSTAFF AND LOCATED AN OPEN SEARS THAT HAD THE RIGHT SIZE REPLACEMENT TIRE BY ANOTHER MANUFACTURER. I HAD SEARS INSPECT THE BLOWN OUT TIRE AND THE REST OF THE TIRES AND THEY CONCLUDED THAT THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE BASED ON THEIR OBSERVATIONS. I REQUESTED THAT YOKOHAMA PROFESSIONALLY INSPECT THE TIRE LOCAL TO ME SO THAT I CAN CARRY IT IN AS OPPOSED TO SHIPPING IT TO THEM. AFTER SOME INTERNET RESEARCH I FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS UNFORTUNATELY AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM WITH PRIUS MODEL CARS AND OTHER TOYOTA MODELS. THE PRESENCE OF RODENTS IN THE ENGINE AREA IS OF COURSE UNAVODIABLE BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HEAR ABOUT THE CAR DESIGN ALLOW MICE TO EASILY MOVE INTO THE CABIN. THIS OBVIOUSLY HAS SEVERE CONSEQUENCES: I ALREADY HAVE TO REPLACE THE AIR FILTER AND THE PADDING BEHIND THE GLOVES COMPARTMENT AND I AM NOT SURE IF ANY OTHER PARTS HAVE BEEN CHEWED AWAY. THEY SAY THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND IF THE COMPUTER SHOWS NO ERROR EVERYTHING MUST BE FINE. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF THIS WAS ON THE SAME DAY WHEN I HAD TO BRAKE VERY HARD TO AVOID A CRASH. TOYOTA USA AND THE DEALER, OF COURSE, SAYS THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM AND THAT THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *TR
For the last 14 years, a check engine light has been coming on telling me that I have a fuel canister emissions leak because the canister is cracked. In 2016 2.87 million Toyota Priuses were recalled with the fuel canister crack issue. For unknown reasons Toyota has refused to fix this dangerous issue and has told me that my car was NOT included in the recall. I do not believe Toyota is being honest in their continued denial of this dangerous issue and excluding my 2010 Toyota Prius. This issue has been ongoing since the car was new.
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. CONSUMER STATES PROBLEM WITH THE ABS SYSTEM *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE FIRST TIME HE WENT TO THE DEALER FOR THE ABS PROBLEM, THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND A DEFECT. ONE MONTH LATER, THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPROGRAMMED THE ABS AND THE BRAKES WORKED FINE FOR ABOUT ONE WEEK. SOON, THE BRAKES BEGAN SLIPPING AGAIN AND ULTIMATELY, THE CONSUMER CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED IT SEEMED THE BRAKES WOULD FAIL WHEN HE APPLIED THE BRAKE, RELEASED HIS FOOT AND THEN BRAKED AGAIN. *JB
THE CAR WAS NOT USED FOR ABOUT 4 DAYS OR SO. WHEN I STARTED IT, IT EXHIBITED A "ROUGH ENGINE START" FOR THE FIRST TIME. THIS HAPPENED WHEN THE GAS ENGINE INITIATED AND LASTED FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS. DURING THIS TIME THE ENGINE MADE A VERY LOUD NOISE AS IF THE CAR WAS CHOCKING AND ENGINE WANTED TO GET OUT OF THE CAR'S HOOD. THIS HAS HAPPENED ONLY ONCE. THE CAR STOPPED MAKING THE NOISE AFTER 10SECONDS OR SO. *TR

CONSUMER STATES LEFT INNER FENDER LINER AND FRONT SPLASH SHIELD FELL OFF VEHICLE. *TGW THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT SNOW HAD BUILT UP BETWEEN THE PARTS AND THE ENGINE THEY PROTECT AND EVENTUALLY THE WEIGHT OF THE SNOW CAUSED THE PARTS TO FALL OFF.*JB THE CONSUMER STATED THE FENDER LINER FELL OFF THE VEHICLE FOR THE SECOND TIME. UPON INSPECTION, IT APPEARED THAT SOME PLACES WHERE THE LINER SHOULD HAVE BEEN ATTACHED TO THE BUMPER HAD NEVER BEEN ATTACHED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO ATTACH THE LINER TO THE BUMPER BECAUSE THE AREA WHERE IT ATTACHED TO THE BUMPER HAD COME OFF AND THEREFORE, A NEW BUMPER WAS NEEDED TO RE-ATTACH TO THE LINER. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WOULD NOT OPERATE AS THEY SHOULD IF THE VEHICLE WAS WARM. WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKES, HE WOULD HAVE TO APPLY EXTREME FORCE IN ORDER TO GET THE BRAKE PEDAL TO ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE ONLY OCCURRED WHEN DRIVING DURING THE MORNING HOURS, AFTER THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN SITTING OVERNIGHT. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL FEATURE WOULD UNEXPECTEDLY MALFUNCTION AND FORCE THE BRAKES TO ENGAGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IF THE VEHICLE TRAVELING IN FRONT OF HIM WERE TO TURN TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT, HIS BRAKES WOULD SUDDENLY ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING TO SPECIFICATIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.
ON THE DAY PRIOR TO THE EVENT, THE WEATHER WAS AROUND 55 DEGREES AND MISTY WITH OCCASIONAL LIGHT RAIN. OUR 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IV WAS PARKED DURING MOST OF THE DAY. WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 35 IN TEXAS GOING 70 MPH, ALL OF A SUDDEN 4 DIFFERENT WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH ALONG WITH THE LARGE RECTANGULAR WARNING MESSAGE SAYING "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM". THE VEHICLE LOST POWER TO THE WHEELS, THE ACCELERATOR DID NOT WORK EVEN THOUGH THE GASOLINE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING, THE VEHICLE COASTED TO THE SHOULDER WHERE IT WAS IMMOBILE AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME WE HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH THE VEHICLE. THE ODOMETER READING WAS ~3,500 MILES. THE DTC CODE WAS DTC P0A3F "DRIVE MOTOR A POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT". THE DEALER INITIALLY REPLACED THE ENTIRE INVERTER ASSEMBLY, WHICH DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THEN THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE TRANSAXLE FOR THE VEHICLE. THIS CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. I DO NOT HAVE EITHER OF THE PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED, ALTHOUGH I AM SURE TOYOTA DOES HAVE THE PARTS. *TR
