BRAKES DO NOT WORK WHEN DECELERATING AND ROAD IS UNEVEN OR BUMPY. WE TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THE RECALL FIX AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. BRAKE FAILURE HAPPENS 3-4 TIMES/ WEEK DRIVING IN SEATTLE. *TR
TOYOTA PRIUS BRAKING PROBLEM; I HAD THE "RECALL" FIX APPLIED; I HAVE NOTICED IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS THAT THE CAR HAS STARTED TO HAVE BRAKE FAILURE AGAIN WHEN GOING OVER BUMPY SURFACES. IT HAD BEEN FINE FOR A WHILE, BUT THIS STARTED HAPPENING AGAIN. I HAVE CONTACTED DEALERSHIP REGARDING THE SAME. *TR
DRIVING HOME FROM DINNER, MY DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT AGAIN. I TURNED OFF MY HEADLIGHTS, THEN BACK ON AND BOTH LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. THERE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SUPPORTING THE LIGHTING. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND IT NOW HAS ME NERVOUS EVERY TIME I GET ON THE ROAD THAT BOTH LIGHTS COULD GO OUT AT ANY TIME PRE-DAWN, DUSK OR NIGHT. IT IS LIKELY MAKING PRIUS OWNERS FOCUS TOO MUCH ON WATCHING FOR SIGNS THEIR HEADLIGHTS ARE STILL ON INSTEAD OF CONCENTRATING ON THEIR DRIVING. *TR
WHILE BRAKING AND THE CAR IS SLOWING DOWN TO BELOW ABOUT 10 MILES AN HOUR, IT WILL SURGE AHEAD IF IT GOES OVER ROUGH PAVEMENT OR A BUMP. THE ABS RECALL HAS BEEN PERFORMED ON THE CAR, AND IT WAS BROUGHT BACK INTO THE DEALER AFTER THE RECALL AND THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE RECALL WAS APPLIED. THE DEALER CLAIMS THAT THIS BEHAVIOR IS "NORMAL". THE CAR HAS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALER TWO TIMES SO FAR. *TR
WE HAVE EXPERIENCED INCONSISTENT BREAK FEEL AFTER ABS ACTUATION DURING SLOW AND STEADY APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES ON ROUGH OR SLICK ROAD SURFACES. WE NOTICED ALSO THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE IN 2010 BUT OUR PARTICULAR CAR (BY VIN NUMBER) DID NOT QUALIFY. WE THINK THAT THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED A BROADER SAMPLE OF SAME YEAR AND MODEL. WE HAVE BROUGHT THE PROBLEM TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES BUT THEY HAVE DISMISSED IT AS NORMAL OPERATION OF BRAKES. WE FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN THE VEHICLE.
I WAS BACKING MY 2010 PRIUS OUT OF THE GARAGE AND THE VEHICLE LUNGED QUICKLY WHEN I LET OFF THE BRAKE. WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE TO STOP, IT JERKED TO A STOP. I LET OFF THE BRAKE AGAIN AND IT TOOK OFF. THIS PROCESS OF LUNGING AND JERKING REPEATED UNTIL I BACKED ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE. IT SCARED ME. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR ISSUES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHENEVER SHE DROVE OVER A POT HOLE OR RAILROAD TRACKS THE BRAKING SYSTEM DID NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. TWICE NOW MY BRAND NEW 2010 PRIUS IV HAS FAILED TO ACCELERATE WHEN I WAS DRIVING. JUNE 16 PURCHASED THE CAR. JUNE 22 AT A STOP LIGHT ON A SURFACE STREET, CONTINUED ON GREEN LIGHT, CAR LOST POWER IN THE INTERSECTION AND I COASTED TO A STOP. RESTARTED, AND FINE UNTIL AUGUST 3, 1443 MILES ON THE CAR, WHEN I STOPPED FOR GAS, CONTINUED ON TO THE HIGHWAY, UP TO 65 MPH, AND CAR LOST POWER AGAIN, WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, WENT DOWN TO 42 MPH, AND I COASTED TO THE SHOULDER. TURNED OFF POWER. RESTARTED, AND FINE AGAIN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT'S BROTHER OWNED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED HER BROTHER DIED IN A HEAD ON CRASH. WHILE HE WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 65MPH NORTH BOUND, A TRUCK WAITING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WAS REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER TRUCK PUSHING THE TRUCK INTO THE CONTACT'S BROTHER LANE OF TRAFFIC. THE CONTACT STATED WITNESSES ADVISED HER THAT BRAKES FAILED ON HER BROTHER'S VEHICLE AND HE WAS NOT ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO STOP WHEN HE SAW THE TRUCK APPROACHING. THE POLICE REPORT WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,000.
I HAVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS THAT HAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES SOMETIMES DIS-ENGAGING WHEN THE CAR GOES OVER UNEVEN OR SLIPPERY SURFACES. TOYOTA WAS UNABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AFTER I BROUGHT IT IN FOR THE RECALL. THE PROBLEM REMAINS SO I AM STUCK DRIVING AN UNSAFE CAR. *TR
I OWN A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, AND LAST WEEK I HAD THE ABS ECU UPDATED PER THE RECALL. PRIOR TO THE UPDATE, BRAKING OVER A BUMP OR POTHOLE WOULD RESULT IN A LITTLE 'SKIP' ON THE ROAD AS THE BRAKES KIND OF FLUTTERED. I JUST PRESSED THE PEDAL A LITTLE HARDER AND ALL WAS WELL. POST UPDATE, I HAVE A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE BRAKES DISENGAGING COMPLETELY AS THE CAR HITS A BUMP. THE LITTLE 'SKIP' IS GONE, AND NOW THERE'S A PANIC MOMENT WHERE THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD WITH NO BRAKE PRESSURE. I HAVE TO REALLY MASH THE PEDAL THE GET THE BRAKES BACK. PRIOR TO THE UPDATE I WAS A LITTLE WORRIED THAT THE SLIGHT INCREASE IN BRAKING DISTANCE MIGHT HAVE RESULTED IN A CRASH. NOW, I AM VERY AFRAID. THE CAR IS ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE WHEN THIS HAPPENS, AND IT IS ALWAYS UNEXPECTED. I FEEL THAT IF I CRASH, I WILL BE HELD LIABLE FOR SOMETHING THAT ISN'T MY FAULT. LIKE ALL OTHER 2010 PRIUS COMPLAINTS, WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES AND GO OVER A BUMPY SURFACE, THE BRAKES RELEASE CAUSING THE CAR TO JOLT FORWARD. I TOOK MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IN TO THE DEALER DUE TO THE RECALL. THE SERVICE MANAGER STATED MY CAR WOULD BE FIXED IN LESS THAN THIRTY MINUTES. WHATEVER THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DO TO FIX THE BRAKE PROBLEM DID NOT HAPPEN OR DID NOT WORK. MY CAR STILL JOLTS FORWARD WHEN I AM PRESSING ON THE BRAKES AND I HIT A BUMPY SURFACE. I AM SCARED FOR MY OWN SAFETY. IN ADDITION, I CANNOT HELP BUT WONDER WHAT THIS PROBLEM DOES TO MY TIRES. I HAVE HAD THE CAR SINCE JULY 2009 AND HAVE GOTTEN TWO FLAT TIRES IN THE PAST 11 MONTHS! I HAVE A 2010 PRIUS THAT HAS HAD THE BRAKE RECALL FIX APPLIED. BUT WHEN I AM TURNING RIGHT APPLYING THE BRAKE AND THEN HIT BUMP/CHUCK HOLE THE BRAKES FADE FOR JUST A FEW SECONDS. NO ACCIDENTS BUT DOES NOT GIVE DRIVER ANY CONFIDENCE. *TR
WE PURCHASED A 2010 PRIUS IN MAY 2010. MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR OUT OF A SHOPPING MALL DRIVEWAY INTO THE LEFT HAND TURN OF THE ROAD AND PULLED UP BEHIND A TRUCK. SHE WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 5-10 MPH ON A NORMAL ROAD, NO POT HOLES OR WET CONDITIONS. SHE HAD HER FOOT RAMMED TO THE FLOOR BUT NO BRAKES! SHE WENT INTO THE BACK OF THE TRUCK, CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR AND WINDSCREEN. SHE HAD TWO CHILDREN IN THE BACK WITH HER. SEEMS LIKE THEY HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM! WE WERE TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THAT THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS AND THAT EVERY CAR ON THE LOT HAD BEEN FIXED! NOT REPAIRED YET. NOT SURE I WANT IT BACK. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, NO ACCIDENTS, BUT CLOSE CALLS. WHEN I AM SLOWING TO A STOP, AND IF THE VEHICLE HITS A ROUGH SPOT IN THE ROAD, FOR EXAMPLE A POTHOLE, THE BRAKE PEDAL LOWERS SLIGHTLY AND THE CAR APPEARS TO HAVE THE ANTI LOCK BRAKING TAKE OVER AND THE CAR SPEED DECREASES SLOWLY UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE ABS AND MAY NOT STOP IN THE REMAINING DISTANCE TO A STOP SIGH OR TRAFFIC LIGHT. AT LEAST 4 TIMES, 3 SINCE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR MY CAR, I HAVE BEEN STOPPING AND WITHIN ABOUT 20 FEET OF THE STOP SIGH THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT BUMP OR POTHOLE AND WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE CONTINUOUSLY I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED SLIGHTLY AND MY RATE OF SLOWING DECREASED AND MY CAR DRIFTED PAST THE STOP SIGN. THIS ALL HAPPENED WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE. I TOLD THE TOYOTA DEALER ABOUT THIS AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT IS THE WAY THE CAR IS DESIGNED, THAT ANY TIME THAT THE COMPUTER SENSES A WHEEL SLIP, THE ABS TAKES OVER. BUT ON DRY ROAD CONDITIONS, THIS IS PROBLEMATIC BECAUSE IN MY AREA THERE ARE OFTEN UN REPAIRED ROADS WITH RUTS, POTHOLES, BUMPS AND ETC. NEAR THE INTERSECTIONS. HAVING THE ABS TAKE OVER PROVIDES A LAG TIME IN THE STOPPING OF THE CAR AND EACH TIME I HAVE GONE PAST THE STOP SIGN AND SLIGHTLY INTO THE INTERSECTION APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET INTO THE PATH OF OTHER VEHICLES. I AM AN ENGINEER WITH NASA AND KNOW WHAT I AM DOING AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FEATURE, BUT THIS FEATURE CAN AND HAS LEFT ME EXCEEDING MY PLANNED STOPPING DISTANCE AND COULD HAVE LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. *TR
SQUEALING NOISE FROM BRAKES/WHEELS WHEN I PRESS BRAKES ON MY BRAND NEW 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. IT'S LITERALLY CAUSING ME HEADACHES AFTER DRIVES AND IS A BIG HEALTH HAZARD. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TWICE TO MY DEALERSHIP THAT SOLD THE CAR AND THEY ARE RECOGNIZING THE NOISE BUT TELLING THAT IT IS NORMAL FOR ALL PRIUS. IF THAT'S THE CASE THEN IT'S A DEFECT IN PRIUS AS SQUEALING NOISE THAT CAUSES HEADACHES SHOULD NOT BE NORMAL. ALSO, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE FACING THIS. TODAY AT YET ANOTHER CHECK FOR MY 2010 PRIUS TO TRY TO DISCOVER THE CAUSE FOR THE CONTINUAL SURGING, I WAS INFORMED THAT 160 TIMES IN THE LAST 1 1/2 MONTHS I HAVE DRIVEN WITH BOTH THE GAS AND BRAKE PEDALS DEPRESSED SIMULTANEOUSLY. THIS IS A RIDICULOUS ASSERTION AND COMPLETELY FALSE. OBVIOUSLY THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE IN MY PRIUS BRAKES. THIS IS FURTHER EVIDENCE THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE PRIUS BRAKES. *TR
GRABBING BRAKES: PARKED AND SAT IN THE CAR ON A SLIGHT INCLINED DRIVEWAY FOR SOME TIME LISTING RADIO. WHEN I STARTED BACKING UP AND TRIED TO BRAKE, THERE WAS NO BRAKING AND THEN CLUNK CLUNK NOISE AND CAR STOPS, TRIED AGAIN, SAME THING NO BRAKING AND THEN LITTLE MORE PRESSURE ON BRAKES, CLUNK CLUNK NOISE CARS STOPS. THERE WAS NO WAY TO SMOOTHLY GLIDE THE CAR DOWN. THIS HAPPENED AROUND 5 TIMES. DURING LAST SERVICE I EXPLAINED DEALER ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ON JUNE 2, 2010, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A CURB. THERE WERE MINOR DAMAGES TO THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT SOMEONE WOULD CONTACT HIM. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 17,000.
I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON A ROAD APPROX. 25 MPH. I HIT A DIP IN THE ROAD RIGHT AS I WAS BRAKING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. THE AUTOMOBILE SURGED FORWARD DESPITE MY FOOT BEING ON THE BRAKE. THIS HAS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY SINCE HAVING THE RECALL FIX!!! THIS PROBLEM MUST BE FIXED. WE HAVE REPEATEDLY CONTACTED TOYOTA ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND GET THE SAME ANSWER EVERY TIME - THERE IS NO PROBLEM. I DO NOT CONSIDER IT TO BE NORMAL FOR THE CAR TO SURGE FORWARD WHILE MY FOOD IS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET SOMETHING DONE! WE TRIED ARBITRATION TO GET RID OF OUR VEHICLE AND TOYOTA BASICALLY SAID THAT WE WERE LYING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. PLEASE REVIEW AND RECALL. MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS CONTINUES TO EXPERIENCE THE MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKING POWER EVEN AFTER THE RECALL FIX WAS APPLIED BACK IN MARCH. I EXPERIENCE THE SAME LOSS OF BRAKING POWER AS I DID IN THE PAST WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS, POT HOLES AND THE LIKE, ESPECIALLY WHEN HITTING THE BRAKE ON A DECLINE. I BROUGHT MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND A FIELD TECH SPECIALIST WAS UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM - BUT I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT A HALF DOZEN TIMES SINCE THE RECALL AND HAVE NOTIFIED TOYOTA'S HQ - THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED. I CONTINUE TO FEEL AS IF PEDESTRIAN, OTHER DRIVER, AND MY OWN SAFETY ARE AT RISK WITH THIS CONTINUED BRAKE ISSUE THAT TOYOTA CANNOT SEEM TO FIX. *TR
OUR NEW 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS LOST ITS BRAKES FOR A SHORT PERIOD WHEN DRIVING DOWN A STEEP HILL AT SLOW SPEED (10 MPH). ALTHOUGH I WAS PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THE BRAKES COMPLETELY RELEASED FOR ROUGHLY 2 SECONDS AND THEN RE-APPLIED. WE HAD JUST DRIVEN OVER A SMALL BUT SHARP BUMP. I UNDERSTAND HOW ABS WORKS, AND THIS WAS NOT ABS. THE BRAKES COMPLETELY RELEASED AND THE CAR "JUMPED" FORWARD - IT JUMPED BECAUSE THE HILL WAS QUITE STEEP. WHAT IS MOST DISTURBING IS THAT THE CAR HAD JUST BEEN SERVICED (MAY 29TH) AND THE EVENT HAPPENED MAY 31. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THE CAR HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR A BRAKE PROBLEM BUT THEY HAD "FORGOTTEN" TO DO THE RECALL. FURTHER, I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR FIVE MONTHS AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. CONSUMER STATES PROBLEM WITH TIRE AND REQUEST FINANCIAL RELIEF *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE TPMS LIGHT ILLUMINATED. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SERVICE STATION, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND A LEAK, SO AIR WAS ADDED BECAUSE THE TIRE WAS LOW. WHEN THE CONSUMER LEFT THE SERVICE STATION, THE LIGHT WENT OUT. THE NEXT TIME HE DROVE THE VEHICLE, THE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN. AS THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING, ANOTHER MOTORIST ALERTED HIM TO LET HIM KNOW HIS TIRE WAS GOING FLAT. THE NEXT DAY, THE CONSUMER DROVE TO SEARS AND THEY INSPECTED THE TIRE AND FOUND A GASH, WHICH MEANT THE TIRE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. *JB
ALL BRAKE ROTORS HAD A CRACK PERPENDICULAR TO THE ROTATION. *TR
I HAD THE TOYOTA PRIUS REFLASH DONE ON MY CAR. SINCE THIS REFLASH I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF THE BRAKE SURGE. THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT WAS YESTERDAY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A ROAD GOING ABOUT 25 MPH. I NOTICED AN UPCOMING STOP SIGN AND A SMALL DIP IN THE ROAD. I ENGAGED THE BRAKES AND SLOWED TO ABOUT 10 MPH. UPON HITTING THE DIP THE CAR SURGED FORWARD TOWARD THE STOP SIGN AND INTERSECTION. DESPITE APPLYING EVEN AND STEADY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE, THE CAR SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD ON ITS OWN ACCORD. WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE INSTANCES SINCE THE 'FIX' BY TOYOTA. WE TRIED ARBITRATION TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE, BUT WE HAVE BEEN IGNORED. I AM CONCERNED THAT A FUTURE SURGE WILL INEVITABLY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. AT ABOUT 7:45 AM SUNDAY MAY 23, I WAS DRIVING WEST ON HAMBURG TURNPIKE IN WAYNE, GENTLY ACCELERATING TO GET BETTER MILEAGE, THE LIGHT AT BERDAN AVE AND HAMBURG HAD JUST TURNED GREEN, SO I ACCELERATED SLOWLY TO ABOUT 40 MPH. AT THIS POINT, I HEAR A SHRIEKING BEEP AND THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD AS THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE DASH LIGHTS UP WITH THE USUAL MESSAGE SQUARE AND THE WORD BRAKE! IN THE BOX. I LOOK IN ALL DIRECTIONS AND SAW NOTHING UNTIL I BOUNCED OVER THE CONSTRUCTION PLATES. THE BOX WAS GONE, AND THE CAR RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. I WAS PUZZLED. I THOUGHT IT COULD BE THE PLATES. I CHECKED WITH MY SON AND HE REMINDED ME THAT IN THE MODEL 5 WE HAVE RADAR CRASH AVOIDANCE. UPON FURTHER REVIEW I WANTED MORE INFORMATION. I TOOK MY SON, AND A CAMERA, AND DROVE THE ROUTE AGAIN. THE SECOND PLATE IS NOT FLUSH TO THE ROAD AND STICKS OUT TO THE LEFT. I THINK OTHER DRIVERS NEED TO BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY SO THEY DO NOT PANIC WHEN IT HAPPENS. THE CRASH AVOIDANCE SYSTEM COULD HAVE BEEN DOING ITS JOB CORRECTLY. I CONTACTED WAYNE POLICE ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND THE DISPATCHER SAID AFTER CONSULTATION ' IT IS A COUNTY ROAD, CALL THE PASSAIC COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT. MY CAR COMPUTER WILL HAVE RECORDED ALL 3 INCIDENTS. THE THIRD WAS NOT AS BIG A JOLT BECAUSE THE DRIVER AHEAD OF ME HAD SLOWED CONSIDERABLY WHEN HE SAW THE PLATES. THERE IS A WARNING SIGN THAT IS BEYOND THE PLATES IN THE PICTURE. LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE IN SERVICE IS INTERESTED IN THE INFORMATION SINCE THIS IS A NEW FEATURE AND I KNOW AS A COMPUTER PROGRAMMER OF SOME 40+ YEARS THAT A SYSTEM DOES NOT ALWAYS GET TESTED FOR ALL POSSIBLE EVENTS. AS NOTED IN NHTSA INVESTIGATION PE10006. I ENTERED AN INCIDENT DATE OF 5/19/2010, BUT THIS HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY WITH MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS (PURCHASED OCT. 2009). IT IS AS DESCRIBED IN THE INVESTIGATION SUMMARY; A MOMENTARY LAPSE IN BRAKING WHILE TRAVELING OVER UNEVEN OR ROUGH SURFACES. I HAD THE SOFTWARE UPDATE PERFORMED LAST WEEK AND INTERESTINGLY, IT SEEMS TO HAVE GOTTEN WORSE SINCE THEN. IT'S VERY DISCONCERTING AND ALARMING. FORTUNATELY, IT'S NEVER HAPPENED WHEN THERE IS A CAR IN FRONT OF ME (AS ON THE EXIT RAMP OF A FREEWAY OR PRIOR TO A STOPLIGHT), BUT IF IT DOES, I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT IT WILL RESULT IN A CRASH, FOR WHICH I WILL NO DOUBT BE WRONGLY BLAMED AND CITED. I'M TO THE POINT THAT I WOULD PREFER THAT MY WIFE NOT DRIVE THE CAR AND AM CONSIDERING WHAT ACTION I CAN TAKE WITH TOYOTA --- RETURNING THE CAR, SOME KIND OF FINANCIAL COMPENSATION ETC. 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE DID NOT SEEM TO STOP IMMEDIATELY WHEN HE HIT A BUMP. *TGW
BRAKE FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN VEHICLE WAS COMING OFF FREEWAY EXIT RAMP AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON UNEVEN, CURVY ROAD. WHILE APPROACHING INTERSECTION FROM SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET AWAY, BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE FOR ABOUT A SECOND; ALSO FELT THE VEHICLE "LURCH" FORWARD IN THAT LAPSE OF TIME. REPEATED PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES FINALLY BROUGHT CAR TO STOP BUT NOT IN TIME TO PREVENT COLLISION WITH INCOMING PICKUP TRUCK ON STRAIGHTAWAY TRAFFIC. POLICE ARRIVED AT SCENE BUT DID NOT FILE REPORT BECAUSE NOBODY WAS INJURED. BODY SHOP ESTIMATED DAMAGE ON FRONT BUMPER AT $1500. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT IN TO DEALER ON 05/18/2010 FOR INSPECTION. SERVICE MANAGER SAID ECU BRAKE RECALL HAD BEEN CONDUCTED ON SAID VEHICLE IN FEBRUARY 2010 AT DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP. CURRENTLY STILL AWAITING ON CONCLUSIVE REPORT FROM TOYOTA ENGINEERS. CAR ONLY HAS 1000 MILES ON ODOMETER. BRAKE FAILURE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCED SOME TEN TIMES IN THE 2 MONTHS OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE, USUALLY DURING HIGHER SPEEDS OVER UNEVEN ROAD. CAME CLOSE TO ACCIDENTS ON THREE INSTANCES, NOT INCLUDING THIS ACTUAL ONE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT THAT COULD RESULT IN FATALITIES. PLEASE INVESTIGATE! *TR
WHILE BRAKING AT LOW SPEEDS (15 MPH OR LESS), ESPECIALLY UNDER WET ROAD CONDITIONS AND AFTER HITTING A BUMP (POT HOLE, ROUGH ROAD, ETC.), THE BRAKES TEMPORARILY FAIL AND THE CAR SKIDS, WITH LOSS OF POWER STEERING IT SEEMS AS WELL. I HAVE HAD THE RECALL WORK PERFORMED ON MY CAR, BUT IT STILL OCCURS. THE TOYOTA SOLUTION TO "STEP ON THE BRAKE HARDER" IS NOT ALWAYS A SOLUTION, ESPECIALLY AS THE PROBLEM SOMETIMES OCCURS NOT COMING TO A FULL STOP, BUT BREAKING DURING TURNING. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 6 TIMES SINCE THE SO-CALLED RECALL "FIX" FOR THE BRAKING SOFTWARE WAS INSTALLED. *TR
2010 PRIUS - THIS CAR WAS RECALLED FOR A BRAKING PROBLEM. THE "SOFTWARE FIX" WAS COMPLETED ON MY CAR, BUT THE SAME BRAKING PROBLEM STILL EXISTS IN THE CAR. A FOLLOW-UP VISIT TO THE DEALER COMPLAINING OF THE PROBLEM STILL HAPPENING RESULTED IN NOTHING BEING DONE TO FIX THE BRAKING PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM : OCCASIONALLY WHEN BRAKING OVER A BUMP THE BRAKES DISENGAGE FOR A BRIEF TIME (PROBABLY LESS THAN A SECOND) AND RESULT IN AN INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE AND POSSIBLE ACCIDENT. IN OTHER WORDS THE RECALL FIX HAS DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM - - IF IT WAS BAD ENOUGH TO HAVE A RECALL - AND IT DOESN'T GET FIXED - THEN IT MUST STILL BE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM.... THIS PROBLEM OCCURS OFTEN - BUT NOT EASILY DEMONSTRATED. IT HAS HAPPENED SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW AND WE NOW HAVE 11,000 MILES AND IT STILL HAPPENS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON I-430 IN WEST LITTLE ROCK YESTERDAY, I HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL SET ON 65 MPH. AS I APPROACHED SLOWER TRAFFIC AHEAD, I SLOWED THE CAR TO 60MPH USING THE BRAKES. I ASSUMED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL ON MY CAR HAD AUTOMATICALLY DISENGAGED AT THIS POINT AND I LET OFF THE BRAKES. THE CRUISE CONTROL THEN CAUSED THE CAR TO ACCELERATE BACK UP TO 65MPH AS IT NEVER DISENGAGED BY USING THE BRAKES. THIS WAS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS SINCE IT HAPPENED NEAR THE CREST OF A HILL AND CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO NO LONGER BE AT A SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE BEHIND THE SLOWER CAR IN FRONT OF ME. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON BOWMAN ROAD IN WEST LITTLE ROCK, I WAS BRAKING AS I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION AT MARKHAM. THE CAR SUDDENLY FELT LIKE IT WAS SURGING FORWARD AND NOT BRAKING AT ALL AS I DROVE OVER A MAN-HOLE COVER. THIS WAS ESPECIALLY PRONOUNCED AS I WAS GOING DOWNHILL AND TURNING TO THE RIGHT AT THE YIELD SIGN. MY WIFE NOTICED IT FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT AS WELL. WE MOMENTARILY FELT AS IF WE WOULD NOT STOP AND END UP IN THE PATH OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS HAPPENED AFTER THIS VEHICLE HAS ALREADY BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE DID NOT FIX THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *TR
MY WIFE AND 2 DAUGHTERS WERE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 90/94 WHEN THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN SLOWLY DROPPED. I DOUBLE CHECKED THE LEVER UNDERNEATH TO ADJUST IT, BUT THAT WAS TIGHT. I COULD SEE WIRES AND BOLTS WHERE THE COLUMN HAD DROPPED SEVERAL INCHES. I LIFTED THE COLUMN UP AND THOUGHT IT WOULD LOCK IN OR CLICK BACK IN PLACE. WHEN I DID THIS, THE ENTIRE COLUMN COLLAPSED IN MY LAP. AN ALARM SOUNDED AND I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHILE GOING 70 MPH. SOMEHOW I MANAGED TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALER FIXED THE VEHICLE AND WROTE, "UPPER STEERING COLUMN PLATE CAME OUT OF BRACKET, POSSIBLY NOT LOCKED IN ALL THE WAY FROM FACTORY." DEALER HAD A FIELD TECH COME LOOK AT AND TAKE PICTURES. APPROXIMATELY 2-3 WEEKS LATER HAD A CALL FROM THE DEALER SAYING SOME ENGINEERS WANTED TO REPLACE MORE PARTS AND WANTED VEHICLE AGAIN. THIS TIME THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE COLUMN RATHER THAN FIXING PIECES. AT THIS POINT WE HAD NO FAITH IN THE VEHICLE AND BEGAN DEALING WITH TOYOTA TO GET A NEW VEHICLE AS THIS PRIUS ONLY HAD 6,293 MILES. *TR

A FEW DAYS AGO MY WIFE WAS PREPARING TO CROSS A 4-LANE HIGHWAY WHEN THE CAR "POPPED" INTO N FROM THE D POSITION. AFTER SEVERAL "REBOOTS" THE VEHICLE WOULD STILL NOT STAY IN D. THEN MY WIFE HELD THE JOYSTICK IN THE D POSITION AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT BACK TO OUR HOUSE (ABOUT 1 MILE). AN HOUR LATER THE CAR OPERATED NORMALLY. *TR

I WAS MAKING A SHARP RIGHT TURN TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPACE, SLOWING TO A STOP. THE CAR SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED FORWARD OUT OF MY CONTROL. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD, WITH NO RESPONSE. AS THE CAR WAS RACING INTO A TREE, I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE BY PUSHING THE POWER BUTTON TO OFF. THE CAR KNOCKED DOWN A TREE AND CAME TO A STOP ON TOP OF IT.
I HAVE A VERY DIFFICULT TIME FASTENING THE SEAT BELTS IN THE REAR SEAT BECAUSE THE CATCH (THE FEMALE COMPONENT OF THE SEAT BEAT) RECEDES DOWN INTO THE SEAT MAKING IT NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO CONNECT WITH THE MALE COMPONENT. PREVIOUSLY, THE CONTACT RECEIVED REPAIRS TO THE SERVICE BRAKES AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE UNDER AN UNKNOWN RECALL AND STATED THE FAILURE WAS NOT THE FIRST OCCURRENCE FOLLOWING RECALL REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,100 AND THE CURRENT WAS 11,500.

IT WAS NOT AT AN EXTREME HIGH RPM AND IT WAS NOT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD TIME, BUT IT DID LAST FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. AFTER THE VEHICLE WENT DOWN TO NORMAL RPM, AFTER A S SECOND OR TWO, IT BEGAN ALL OVER AGAIN. THE CONSUMER STATED IT WAS NOT A SURGE AS THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN GEAR AT THE TIME. *JB
