TL* TAKATA RECALL. THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V284000 (AIR BAGS); HOWEVER, THE PARTS TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. MY TOYOTA RAV4 2005 IS INCLUDED IN THE FRONT DRIVER AIRBAG INFLATOR RECALL. I RECEIVED MY FIRST NOTICE FROM TOYOTA IN MAY,2015 THAT MY CAR WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BUT THAT "NO REMEDY" WAS AVAILABLE AND THAT I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN THE REMEDY WAS AVAILABLE. I RECEIVED THAT NOTICE OF THE AVAILABLE REMEDY A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO. AFTER 4 CALLS TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO SCHEDULE THE REPAIR TO THE AIRBAG, I WAS TOLD BY PRINCIPLE TOYOTA IN MEMPHIS, TN THAT THE DEALERSHIP IS ONLY ALLOWED TO ORDER ONE PART PER WEEK FOR REPAIRS TO RAV4 VEHICLES SO IT COULD BE AS MUCH AS A MONTH POSSIBLY TWO MONTHS BEFORE THEY COULD GET THE PART ORDERED. IF TOYOTA ADVISED ME THE REMEDY WAS AVAILABLE, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SCHEDULE THAT REPAIR IMMEDIATELY.
THE RIGHT SIDE GAS TANK STRAP HAD RUSTED OUT AND BROKE, CAUSING THE GAS TANK ASSEMBLY TO DROP DOWN ONTO THE DRIVESHAFT.

I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER ON JULY 7, 2015 CONCERNING THE TAKATA DRIVER'S AIRBAG RECALL. A LOCAL DEALERSHIP PUT ME IN A RENTAL CAR THE NEXT DAY. ON THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2015, THERE WAS A MESSAGE ON MY HOME PHONE THAT THE PART HAD BEEN RECEIVED AND MY CAR WAS REPAIRED. AS OF SEPT. 1, 2015, WHEN I ENTER MY VIN # ON YOUR DATABASE, MY RECALL STATUS IS LISTED AS: RECALL INCOMPLETE. THIS INFORMATION WAS UPDATED TODAY. HAS MY CAR BEEN REPAIRED? I ALSO HAVEN'T RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA NOTIFYING ME WHEN A REMEDY IS READY AS IS STATED IN THE INTERIM NOTICE. IS THERE A REMEDY YET? I CALLED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER (PHONE NUMBER IN INTERIM LETTER) ON SAT., AUG. 29, 2015 AND WASN'T PROVIDED WITH ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ON MY 2005 TOYOTA RAV4 ABOUT A DEFECTIVE TAKATA DRIVER'S AIRBAG. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE AIRBAG WAS REPLACED ON AUG. 27, 2015. TO DATE I HAVEN'T RECEIVED A SECOND LETTER FROM TOYOTA EXPLAINING THE SOLUTION TO THE RECALL, AND I'VE CALLED THEM AND BEEN PROVIDED WITH NO INFORMATION. I'M CALLING TOYOTA AGAIN TODAY. ON SEPT. 2, I LEARNED FROM LEITH TOYOTA THAT MY DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAG WAS REPLACED BY ANOTHER POTENTIALLY DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAG. THIS IS THE SOLUTION? THIS WAS WHAT TOYOTA TOLD THE DEALERSHIP TO DO. AN ARTICLE RELEASED IN SEPT. 2015 MOTOR TREND MAGAZINE DETAILS THE SAME CONTINUING PROBLEM WITH CURRENT TAKATA AIRBAGS BEING MANUFACTURED. I AM NEITHER SATISFIED NOR COMFORTABLE WITH THE SOLUTION THAT TOYOTA DEVISED, ESPECIALLY SINCE TOYOTA RECENTLY PURCHASED 13 MILLION AIRBAGS FROM A COMPETITOR, SO WHY WASN'T A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER'S AIRBAG USED IN MY CAR? I'M ONCE AGAIN HAVING TO DEAL WITH ANOTHER POTENTIALLY DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAG. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, MY PASSENGER AIRBAG IS THE SAME AIRBAG AS THE ORIGINAL DRIVER'S AIRBAG, SO WHY NO RECALL ON THE PASSENGER AIRBAG? I'M BEING FORCED TO RETURN THE RENTAL CAR TODAY, WHICH I'VE NOT RETURNED DUE TO THE WAY THE RECALL WAS CONDUCTED AND I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR AGAIN. EVERYONE SHOULD BE CHECKING ON THE REPLACEMENT AIRBAGS BEING USED IN THEIR CARS, BECAUSE THEY'RE PROBABLY TAKATAS. TAKATA KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM IN 2001 AND MY RAV4 IS A 2005. I CAN'T EXPRESS MY LEVEL OF FRUSTRATION AND ANGER OVER THESE AIRBAGS.
TL* TAKATA RECALL. THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED SEVERE INJURIES TO THE SHOULDER, LEFT ARM, AND ANKLE THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY WITH THE IMPACT. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE RECALL NOTIFICATION WAS RECEIVED AFTER THE AIR BAG FAILURE OCCURRED. A REPRESENTATIVE AT PASSPORT TOYOTA, LOCATED AT 5001 AUTH WAY, SUITLAND, MD TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE MY AIRBAG LIGHT WASN'T ON THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING TO PROVIDE ME WITH A RENTAL VEHICLE UNTIL TOYOTA ANNOUNCES A PERMANENT SOLUTION FOR MY CAR. THIS IS NOT ONLY IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF MY RECALL NOTICE (IT SPECIFICALLY STATES THAT IF I FEEL UNSAFE DRIVING MY CAR, THEN THE DEALERSHIP WILL PROVIDE ME WITH A RENTAL) BUT DISPLAYS THAT REPRESENTATIVE'S IGNORANCE OF THE RECALL NOTIFICATION, WHICH ALSO STATES THAT THERE IS NO WARNING LIGHT OR OTHER INDICATION THAT THE ISSUE WITH MY DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG EXISTS. SINCE I LIVE IN A MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREA (WASHINGTON DC) WHERE MULTIPLE VEHICLE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN DAILY, I FEEL INCREDIBLY UNSAFE DRIVING WITHOUT THE FULL ASSURANCE OF A WORKING DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG. AS STIPULATED IN THE RECALL NOTICE, THE DEALERSHIP IS OBLIGED TO PROVIDE ME WITH A RENTAL VEHICLE GIVEN THAT TOYOTA DOES NOT HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. I ALSO CALLED DARCARS TOYOTA ON 12210 CHERRY HILL ROAD, SILVER SPRING, MD, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ME WITH A CAR EITHER. I FIND IT APPALLING AND ABHORRENT THAT 2 DEALERSHIPS IN A MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREA WOULD REFUSE TO COMPLY WITH THE CONDITIONS OF A RECALL NOTICE, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT INVOLVES A DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG GIVEN THE CURRENT RECALL SITUATION WITH A SIMILAR PART ON A DIFFERENT VEHICLE.
I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA ABOUT A SAFETY RECALL MID SUMMER. IT SAID I WOULD RECEIVE A SECOND LETTER WHEN A REMEDY WAS AVAILABLE AND I HAVE HEARD NOTHING SINCE. THE ISSUE IS THAT THERE COULD BE A POTENTIAL FOR MOISTURE INTRUSION THAT COULD MAKE THE AIRBAG INFLATOR MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO RUPTURE DURING A CRASH. IF THIS HAPPENED METAL FRAGMENTS COULD STRIKE THE DRIVER OR OTHER PASSENGERS RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. Y 26 YR OLD SON IS DRIVING THIS CAR NOW AND I BELIEVE I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONTACTED WITH A REMEDY BY NOW, CONSIDERING THE POSSIBLE DANGER. I WAS TOLD TO FILE A COMPLAINT HERE.

I CONTACTED BOCH TOYOTA SOUTH IN THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER (VIA EMAIL) REGARDING WHEN THE "REMEDY" WILL BE READY IN EARLY SEPTEMBER. I RECEIVED TWO CONFIRMATION MESSAGES THAT THEY HAD RECEIVED MY EMAIL. I EXPRESSED MY CONCERN OVER THE SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE I TRANSPORT THREE CHILDREN TO AND FROM SCHOOL. AS OF THIS DATE, I HAVE STILL NOT RECEIVED ANY ANSWER. I THINK THIS IS LONG ENOUGH.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND HEARD A LOUD BANG AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WHEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS THE TRANSMISSION WAS SKIPPING. I JUST BARELY REACHED A SPOT THAT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER. WHEN I TRIED TO DRIVE AGAIN I COULDN'T GO IN EITHER REVERSE OR DRIVE. I CHECKED AND I WAS LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID, 2 HOURS LATER AFTER GETTING TOWED TO A AUTO BODY SHOP THEY TOLD ME THE DIFFERENTIAL BLEW UP AND THAT I HAD TO GET ME A NEW TRANSMISSION. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE A SAW THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO OTHER PEOPLE BUT TOYOTA NEVER DID A RECALL!! NOW I HAVE TO PAY $300 TO GET IT TOWED AND ANOTHER $2600 TO GET IT FIXED ON A CAR THAT ONLY HAD 51,000 MILES.

TAKATA AIR BAG RECALL. I HAVE TRIED FOR MONTHS TO GET MY VEHICLE REPAIRED. I HAVE GOTTEN THE RUNAROUND FROM MY LOCAL DEALER. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE SEEMS UNABLE TO HELP. BOTH KEEP TELLING ME THE PART WILL BE IN NEXT WEEK, BUT NEXT WEEK NEVER COMES. IF THE SITUATION POSES A RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH AS IS STATED IN MY RECALL NOTICES, IT WOULD SEEM THEY COULD GET IN GEAR AND FIX THE PROBLEM WITHIN A REASONABLE LENGTH OF TIME. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE SPIRAL CORE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 244,000.
STARTED MY TRIP FROM HOME AND I BLOCK AWAY I TRIED TO STOP FOR A STOP SIGN, THE BRAKE WOULD NOT HOLD. I PRESSED AS HARD AS I COULD HITTING THE FLOOR NO BRAKE. THE VEHICLE STOPPED WHEN I HIT THE CURB. 2005 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO FIRST UNINTENDED ACCELERATION DEALERSHIP EXAMINATION REPORTED NO DEFECTS, SECOND UNINTENDED ACCELERATION CAUSED ACCIDENT WITH SEVERAL VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *SMD THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED, WHEN THE CONSUMERS WIFE WAS DRIVING. I WAS PARKING, 10 MINUTES EARLY, ENTERING THE SPOT AT ABOUT 1 MPH, MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. MY CAR LURCHED OVER A LARGE CURB AND LAUNCHED ITSELF INTO A BUILDING. AS IT WAS LURCHING INTO THE BUILDING, I KEPT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND PULLED ON THE PARKING BRAKE WITH MY RIGHT HAND AND ARM. THESE ACTIONS STOPPED THE CAR AS IT CRASHED INTO THE GLASS AND METAL FRONT WINDOWS. I HAD BEEN DRIVING WITHOUT ANY ACCIDENTS, NOT EVEN A TICKET, FOR 38 YEARS. AFTER THE ACCIDENT I HAD TOYOTA INSPECT THE CAR. THEIR FINDING WAS THAT THE "ACCELERATOR PEDAL OPERATED SMOOTHLY AND RETURNED TO ITS IDLE POSITION WITHOUT ANY STICKING OR HESITATION," AND THAT THE INSPECTOR "WAS NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE YOUR CONCERN." OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS, THE LAST INCIDENT OCCURRING ON 2/14/2014, MY CAR WILL SUDDENLY LOSE POWER AS I AM DRIVING, FOR ABOUT ONE TO THREE SECONDS, THEN JUST AS SUDDEN KICK BACK ON AGAIN. WHEN IT LOSES POWER FOR THAT SECOND OR TWO, I LOSE MY POWER STEERING CAPABILITIES AND THE BATTERY LIGHT COME ON. ONCE THE POWER COMES BACK ON, IT CONTINUES TO RIDE FINE AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. THERE IS A KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT, AS DESCRIBED BY TOYOTA TSB SB-0015-11, RELATING TO DEFECTIVE CYLINDER HEAD BOLT THREADS. THIS DEFECT CAUSES RAPID BURNING OF COOLANT IN THE ENGINE, LEADING TO OVERHEATING AND EXCESSIVE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD, AND SEPARATION OF THE ENGINE HEAD RESULTING IN LOSS OF COMPRESSION AND FIRE HAZARD. VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN WHEN THE ISSUE MANIFESTED. MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO REPAIR, RECALL, OR WARRANTY THE DEFECT OR ANY REPAIRS RESULTING FROM THE SAME. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ON MANY AUTOMOTIVE FORUMS, ALONG WITH CONFIRMATIONS FROM CERTIFIED AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS.
AS I EXIT THE HIGHWAY ON SHARP OFF RAMPS OR TAKE OTHER SIMILAR TIGHT TURNS, VSC TRAC SENSOR LIGHTS TURNS ON AND OFF AND I CAN HEAR GRINDING NOISE WHEN TRACTION CONTROL AUTO-ENGAGES AND DISENGAGES. I NOTICED THAT MY HEATER WASN'T WORKING. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE HEAD GASKET BOLTS WERE OVER-TORQUED DURING INSTALLATION AND THEY ARE STRIPPED. I HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF POSTINGS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THIS PROBLEM IS SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPAIR. TOYOTA ISSUED A BULLETIN REGARDING THIS ISSUE IN 2004. THEY KNOWINGLY SOLD DEFECTIVE VEHICLES. *TR
THE LOWER CONTROL ARM IN THE RECALL FROM TOYOTA BROKE AWAY, FROM WHAT WE FOUND AND WERE TOLD BY PEOPLE WHO INSPECTED THE CAR FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANY FOR THEIR LAW SUIT AGAINST TOYOTA. THE DRIVERS SIDE TIRE MADE A NOISE WHEN IT ROLLED BACK. WE IMPACTED THE CENTER DIVIDER AT 60-65 MPH. THERE WAS NO WAY TO COMPENSATE AND STEER AWAY IT HAPPENED SO QUICKLY. THE SAFETY BELTS HURT ON IMPACT AND OUR KNEES TOOK THE IMPACT. AT IMPACT THE FRONT END OF THE CAR WAS TORN AWAY AND DESTROYED FROM THE RADIATOR TO THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR WAS WARPED AND THE CAR WRINKLED ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR QUARTER PANEL. INSIDE THE BACK OF THE CAR PANELS FOR STORAGE ALL POPPED OUT.THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS WOULD NOT OPERATE WHEN THE TROOPERS CAME. THE INSURANCE COMPANY DETERMINED THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS. TOYOTA IGNORED OUR ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE OUR COMPLAINT WITHOUT LITIGATION SO WE ARE SUING TOYOTA FOR OUR LOSSES AND INJURIES. *TR

NO OTHER BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. WAS 1/2 MILE FROM DEALER WHEN SMOKE STARTED COMING INTO PASSENGER CABIN. SMOKE/FIRE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND UNDER RAV4. SMOKE WAS A BLUISH GREY. PULLED OFF THE MAJOR ROAD INTO AN ABANDONED BUSINESS DRIVEWAY. TURNED RAV OFF AND RAN. PASSERBY CALLED 911. FIRE TRUCKS/POLICE ARRIVED. RAV WAS A TOTAL LOSS. CALLED TOYOTA USA TO REPORT FIRE. THEY ARE SAYING THAT IT WAS NOT MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL. BUT THAT THE FIRE ORIGINATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CAUSE OF FIRE WAS UNDETERMINED AND THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF ANY SORT OF DEFECT OR MALFUNCTION WITH ANY OF THE ELECTRICAL OR MECHANICAL SYSTEMS FOUND. RAV WENT TO DEALER FOR ALL REQUIRED SERVICE AND NEVER HAD AND MAJOR PROBLEMS. IF IT WAS NOT ELECTRICAL THEN WHAT CAUSED MY LIGHTS TO COME ON. THEE VSC TRAC LIGHT HAD NEVER COME ON SINCE I OWNED THE CAR. I HAVE OWNED TOYOTAS SINCE 1973 AND NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN. THE RAV4 WAS MY 5TH TOYOTA.
I HAVE A 2005 4 CYLINDER TOYOTA RAV4 WITH ABOUT 68,000 MILES. IT STARTING MAKING A GURGLING NOISE IN THE DASHBOARD AREA, AND EVENTUALLY LEFT 2 PUDDLES OF ANTI-FREEZE ON MY GARAGE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR REPAIR. AFTER CHECKING THE RAV4 OUT, THE REPAIR MANAGER PHONED TO TELL ME THE ENGINE WAS INDEED LEAKING COOLANT AROUND THE ENGINE HEAD BECAUSE THE ENGINE BOLTS HAD STRIPPED. I ASKED HOW THE HEAD BOLTS GOT STRIPPED AND HE REPLIED, "WEAR AND TEAR AND THE REPAIR WOULD BE AROUND $3000.00 IF THE HEAD BOLT HOLES COULD BE REPAIRED; OTHERWISE, I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE." THE RAV4 HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED, SO THIS IS NOT "WEAR AND TEAR", BUT RATHER A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. AFTER TALKING WITH THE MECHANIC DOING THE REPAIRS, HE SAID THEY SEE MANY OF THESE 4 CYLINDER ENGINES WITH THIS PROBLEM -- MOSTLY ON THE CAMRY, SINCE IT IS BASICALLY A CAMRY ENGINE. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THIS IS BECOMING QUITE A COMMON PROBLEM.
