AUDIBLE CLUNK SOUND IN THE STEERING WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DRIVER CAN ALSO FEEL A KNOCK THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. I AM WORRIED THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE FOR THIS MODEL AND YEAR (E.G., ABOUT 40 COMPLAINTS OF THIS KIND HAVE BEEN FILED FOR 2007 RAV4S ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM). IT APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT; TOYOTA HAS FOR EXAMPLE ISSUED TSB 0318 08 TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO OUR TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, IT IS DUE TO A SHAFT TOLERANCE THAT IS TOO LOOSE; THE CLUNK SOUND WOULD ONLY BE AN ANNOYANCE, BUT NOT A SAFETY CONCERN. GIVEN THAT THE STEERING IS CRITICAL FOR CONTROL AND SAFE OPERATIONS OF THE CAR, I FEEL THAT ANY NOISE IN THE STEERING MIGHT INDICATE A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED WITH 107874 MILES (FROM THE FIRST OWNER) ON 05/09/2014, AND NOTICED THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY DURING THE FIRST WEEKS OF USE. WE BELIEVE THE CONDITION HAD ALREADY EXISTED BEFORE WE PURCHASED THE CAR, BUT WE HAVE NO INFORMATION AT WHICH MILEAGE THE PREVIOUS OWNER STARTED TO NOTICE IT.
WHEN DRIVING WITH AIR BAGS LIGHT ON IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE AND DANGER TO EVERYONE INCLUDING DRIVER. TOYOTA SEND OUT INTERIM RECALL LETTERS TO OWNERS OF CERTAIN MODELS AND YEARS INCLUDING RAV4 2006 TO RAV4 AND ASKED TO CONTACT LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER IMMEDIATELY IN CASE OF IF AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATE OR ILLUMINATED ALREADY. MEANWHILE TOYOTA IS MAKING ARRANGEMENT FOR REMEDY PART ( D SQUIB CLOCK SPIRAL CABLE ) FOR THOSE QUALIFIED MODELS TO FIX THE AIRBAG LIGHT. AFTER I RECEIVED A SAME INTERIM NOTICE, THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. I CALLED TOYOTA CO-OPERATE OFFICE ABOUT THE MY RECALL NOTICE I RECEIVED BY MAIL AND TOLD THAT SUDDENLY MY AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON . TOYOTA ASK ME TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR DIAGNOSE WHICH I DID AND THEIR DIAGNOSE RESULT CAME UP WITH B1801 ERROR ( D SQUIB CLOCK SPRING SPIRAL CABLE FAULTY) WHICH THEY UPDATED TO TOYOTA DATABASE AND TOLD ME TO WAIT TILL REMEDY IS AVAILABLE FOR THIS FIX. I CALLED TOYOTA CO OPERATE OFFICE AGAIN AND THEY TOLD ME TO WAIT TILL THE PART IS AVAILABLE. IT HAS BEEN NOW 7 MONTHS AND I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY FURTHER NOTICE NOR ANY REMEDY YET. I CALLED TOYOTA FEW TIMES AND FINALLY THEY GIVE ME A WEARIED ANSWER THAT MY CAR IS NOT ON DEFECTIVE BATCH ANYMORE AND DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THIS AIRBAG RECALL. MY CAR VIN #, YEAR, MODEL EVERYTHING SHOWING CLEARLY BASED ON INTERIM RECALL LETTER THAT IS IN THAT DEFECTIVE RECALL QUALIFICATION GROUP BUT SOME HOW TOYOTA IS NOW PLAYING GAME AND TELLING ME DIFFERENT STORY. THEY DON'T HAVE ANY ANSWER OF WHO I DO HAVE THE SAME FAULTY SPIRAL CABLE DEFECT LIKE SAME EXACT OTHERS DEFECTIVE BATCH HAS. TOYOTA IS THE ONE WHO SEND OUT INTERIM NOTICES TO THOSE QUALIFIED RECALL BATCH BASED ON THEIR VIN# AND NOW AFTER 8 MONTHS, THEY ARE DENIED THAT MY CAR DOESN'T QUALIFY FOR THIS RECALL FIX?.?? I LIKE TO HAVE THIS INVESTIGATE BY NHTSA'S BEFORE SOME ONE LIFE GETS AT RISK. *TR
EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTIONS. 1ST NOTICED AROUND MAY 2014 AT 95000 MILES. NEED TO ADD 1 TO 1.5 QUART EVERY 1000 MILES OF DRIVING.
I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FOR THE "REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS (NO. 1).WHEN I WENT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER ([XXX]) ,THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS RECALL DOES NOT APPLY TO PUERTO RICO AS PER TOYOTA GENERAL OFFICES INSTRUCTIONS. THE LETTER SAID THIS AN URGENT SAFETY RECALL IN READ LETTERS FOR IT IMPORTANCE. FOR THIS SITUATION WE CAN IMPLIED THAT TOYOTA IS DISCRIMINATING TO THE PUERTO RICO TOYOTA OWNERS.IF ANY ACCIDENT OCCUR FOR THIS SITUATION I MADE RESPONSIBLE TO TOYOTA DE PUERTO RICO,[XXX] (DEALER) AND TOYOTA GENERAL OFFICES. DRIVING DOWN COMMUNITY STREET. AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. HAS STAYED ON CONTINUOUSLY. CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY KIND OF ACCIDENT. TOYOTA SAYS MY VEHICLE IS NOT AFFECTED BY THEIR RECALL AND WILL NOT COVER ANY REPAIRS. *TR
THE STEERING COLUMN BINDS TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER SUCH THAT THE VEHICLE NEVER STEERS STRAIGHT AHEAD. THE SITUATION CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO ALWAYS WANT TO STEER OUT OF THE INTENDED LANE CAUSING DRIVER FATIGUE AT BEST AND AN UNSAFE CONDITION WHEN THE VEHICLE IS CONSTANTLY HEADING OUT OF ITS INTENDED PATH TOWARD OTHER VEHICLES. *TR
LOST POWER STEERING WITHOUT WARNING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. P/S LIGHT CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. BARELY AVOIDED COLLISION WITH LARGE TRUCK. STARTED ENGINE AFTER 20 MINS., P/S LIGHT OUT & STEERING NORMAL. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER WHO FOUND CODE C1524 (LOW VOLTAGE IN POWER STEERING). IN ORDER TO FIND ROOT OF PROBLEM I NEED TO PAY $200 FOR DIAGNOSTIC, WHICH I REFUSED. THIS IS NOT A WEAR/TEAR ISSUE BUT EITHER A DEFECT OR MALFUNCTION. CALLED TOYOTA, ASKED THEM TO PAY FOR DIAGNOSTIC & TOYOTA REFUSED SINCE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRENTY. GUESS TOYOTA COULD CARE LESS ABOUT CUSTOMER SAFETY EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NUMEROUS VEHICLES WITH SAME COMPLAINT! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED WITH THE BRAKES DEPRESSED WHEN IT SUDDENLY AND ERRONEOUSLY ACCELERATED FORWARD, CRASHING INTO THE REAR OF A SECOND VEHICLE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE FAILURE HAD ALSO OCCURRED ON A PREVIOUS OCCASION. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000.
V6 ENGINE MAKES A RATTLE NOISE AT STARTUP. IT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED BY THE DEALER AS THE VVT CAMSHAFT GEAR. TOYOTA HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (T-SB-0094-09) IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE AS THE INTAKE OR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT VVT ASSEMBLY. HOWEVER THE LEXUS DIVISION OF TOYOTA HAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM ON IS AND GS MODELS (REFERENCE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V395000). THE CONSEQUENCE IS THAT THE LOOSE BOLTS COULD CAUSE THE VVT GEAR HOUSING AND SPROCKET TO SEPARATE AND RESULT IN THE ENGINE STOPPING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. IF THIS IS DANGEROUS ENOUGH TO CAUSE A CRASH FOR A LEXUS CUSTOMER, THEN WHY ISN'T THIS DANGEROUS ENOUGH TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR A TOYOTA CUSTOMER. THESE ARE THE SAME MOTORS AND THE CUSTOMERS SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. *TR
AIR BAG FAULT INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON AND IS ILLUMINATED WHENEVER THE IGNITION IS ON. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER PER OWNERS MANUAL AND DEALER INFORMED US THERE IS A TOYOTA RECALL ABOUT TO BE ISSUED BUT NO PARTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR A REPAIR. WE RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM TOYOTA THAT THE RECALL NOTICE IS IN PROCESS BUT PARTS AND REPAIR LEAD TIME IS UNKNOWN. CALLS TO THE LOCAL DEALER AND TO TOYOTA REGIONAL OFFICE HAD EACH TELLING ME TO CALL THE OTHER DUE TO A LACK LEAD TIME INFORMATION FOR THE REPAIR PARTS AVAILABILITY. WE ARE STILL WAITING AND PROBABLY OPERATING AN UNSAFE VEHICLE.. *TR
THERE ARE MULTIPLE KNOCKS COMING UP THE STEERING SHAFT AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. *TR
THE ACCELERATOR STUCK WHILE BRAKING CAUSING VEHICLE TO SURGE FORWARD. *JS
THE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION IS EXCESSIVE IN MY RAV4. IT IS USING ABOUT A QUART OR MORE PER 1,000 MILES. THE TOYOTA DEALER SAYS THIS IS NORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION FOR THIS ENGINE. I SEE MANY OTHER REPORTS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM BEING REPORTED ON THIS WEB SITE AND OTHER OWNERS RECEIVING THE SAME RESPONSE FROM THEIR TOYOTA DEALERS NATIONWIDE. THIS IS NOT ROUTINE AND WILL CAUSE UNEXPECTED ENGINE FAILURE AND/OR ENGINE SEIZING. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V168000 (SUSPENSION); HOWEVER, THE PART NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED AS I WAS APPROACHING A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN WHEN THE CAR'S ENGINE REVVED UP AND THE CAR KEPT MOVING FORWARD WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS FAR AS IT COULD GO. THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED ABOUT 6 FEET INTO THE INTERSECTION. THE NEXT MORNING THE CAR REPEATED THE UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION WHILE I WAS TRYING TO SLOW DOWN PRIOR TO STOPPING FOR A STOP SIGN. THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR MAT WAS REMOVED TWO OR THREE YEARS AGO AND WAS NOT PRESENT THAT EVENING OR THE NEXT MORNING. I REPORTED THIS EPISODE TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND I TOLD HIM I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR. THE DEALER TOLD ME THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT IF I WANTED HAVE TO CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, HE WOULD HAVE TO TECHNICIANS CHECK IT FOR HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE EPISODE. I WAS ALSO TOLD I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR TOWING CHARGES AND THE COST OF THE DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS. THE COMPUTERIZED DIAGNOSTIC CHECK SHOWED NOTHING HAD HAPPENED AND NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR. I TOLD THE DEALER THE I WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST DEVICE, AS THE ACCELERATION DID HAPPEN AND THE TEST SET WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT CHECKING THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TELEPHONE NUMBER IS TORRANCE CALIFORNIA, TOLD THEM MY STORY AND ASKED IF TOYOTA HAD RECEIVED ANY OTHER SUCH COMPLAINTS. I WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTA COULD NOT RELEASE THAT INFORMATION. I ASKED WHAT TOYOTA DID WITH MY REPORT OF THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD IT WENT INTO A TOYOTA DATA BASE. I ASKED FOR A COPY OF RAV4 EPISODES IN THE DATA BASE. I WAS TOLD TOYOTA COULD NOT FURNISH THAT TO ME. I THEN ASKED FOR A COPY OF MY REPORT THAT TOYOTA ENTERED INTO THE DATA BASE. TOYOTA TOLD ME IT COULD NOT FURNISH THAT TO ME. TOYOTA SEEMS TO DISCREDIT REPORTS OF THIS ACCELERATION/SAFETY ISSUE AS IF IT COULD NOT POSSIBLY HAPPEN. *TR
TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR DIAGNOSTICS AS SEVERAL LIGHTS WERE ON. WAS CALLED BY SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THE D SQUIB CIRCUIT/SPIRAL CABLE IS FAULTY AND THEREFORE THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IS NOT OPERATIONAL. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AS I WAS UNAWARE OF MY AIRBAGS NOT FUNCTIONING. THANK GOD, WE DID NOT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT! THE TOYOTA DEALER WHOM WE PURCHASED OUR 2007 RAV 4 FROM BRAND NEW OF COURSE WANTS TO REPAIR IT FOR APPROX. $500.00. THAT IS INSANE AS THIS ISSUE SHOULD NEVER OCCUR. AFTER READING MANY POSTINGS ON THE INTERNET, OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND CLEARLY THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL TO FIX THIS. *TR
WELL-MAINTAINED 2007 RAV4 (67K MILES, NO ISSUES IN THE PAST) STALLED COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH. NEARLY GOT REAR ENDED AS HAZARD FLASHER LIGHTS DID NOT WORK AT ALL. ALL POWER CUTS OFF TO INSIDE OF CAR. ONCE FAN IN ENGINE TURNS OFF (ABOUT 6 MINUTES) CAR CAN START AGAIN. DEALERSHIP SAID "DIRTY THROTTLE BODY PART" SO THEY CLEANED IT. HAPPENED 2ND TIME THE NEXT WEEK! THEN DEALERSHIP REPLACED ENTIRE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. HAPPENED 3RD TIME THE FOLLOWING WEEK! IT'S AT DEALERSHIP AGAIN NOW. EACH TIME IT HAPPENS, CAR IS DRIVING AND ONCE ABOUT 6 MINUTES PASSES, I CAN DRIVE AGAIN. BARELY HAVE TIME TO GET NEAR THE SHOULDER OF ROAD. *TT
THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ON THE VEHICLE IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. IN SOME STATES THE TOYOTA HAS CHANGED THEM FOR NO COST AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED, BUT KNOW THE DO NOT. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS AMOUNT OF CLAIMS IN REGARD TO THIS ISSUE ON THIS MODEL, BUT CONTINUES TO BE IGNORED. ON FRIDAY 03/08/2014 I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO HAVE IT CHECKED BECAUSE OF THIS, AND WHAT THEY TOLD ME WAS THAT IT WAS MY STRUTS. WELL AFTER GETTING THEM CHANGED IT TURNS OUT IT WAS THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME AN ADDITIONAL 502.00 FOR THIS. THIS IS AN ON GOING ISSUE WITH NUMEROUS CLAIMS ABOUT THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND TOYOTA IS NOT REALIZING THE SAFETY ISSUE IN WHICH IT PLACES IT CUSTOMERS. *TR
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION DUE TO BAD PISTON RINGS INSTALLED AT TIME OF MANUFACTURE. TOYOTA BELIEVES 1 QUART PER 1,000 MILES IS ACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT COVER REPAIR UNLESS USE IS OVER THAT LIMIT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE AIR BAG SENSOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 14V168000 (AIR BAGS) AND STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE AND THE REMEDY WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 13V383000 (SUSPENSION); HOWEVER, THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE SERVICED BECAUSE THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE AN EXPECTED DATE FOR THE PART TO BE AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE NO FAILURES AT THIS TIME.
I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN HERE IN TOWN. ALL OF A SUDDEN, WITHOUT WARNING, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO EXPERIENCE A HIGH DEGREE OF ACCELERATION. MY FOOT WAS FIRMLY PLANTED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL ONLY. I COULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE TILL I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL. THE ENGINE THEN STARTED TO REV ITSELF UP UNCONTROLLABLY, UNTIL I TURNED IT OFF WITH THE IGNITION KEY. I WAS A GOOD 15 FEET INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC WHEN I HAD STOPPED. I THEN STARTED IT UP AGAIN AND DROVE HOME WITHOUT INCIDENT. THIS WAS A TOTAL FAILURE OF THE CARS EXPECTATION TO REMAIN STATIONARY WHILE THE BRAKE IS APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT MOVING PRIOR TO THE ACCELERATION SURGE. *TR
NO CRASH INVOLVED. NO LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. DURING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, WAS INFORMED THE RACK ASSEMBLY WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED TO DEAL WITH A CLUNKING NOISE THAT A TECHNICIAN HAD NOTICED. I CHECKED AND FOUND THAT WHILE PARKED AND IDLING, PULLING THE WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION DID PRODUCE THE CLUNK. AFTER ADDITIONAL ESTIMATES, SETTLED ON A SPECIFIC REPAIR VENUE AT ALMOST $1700. ALSO INFORMED BY ONE OF THE ESTIMATORS THAT THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD SOON NEED REPLACED. NOT SCHEDULED FOR REPAIR AT THIS TIME. I WAS INFORMED BY ONE OF THE ESTIMATORS THAT MOST VEHICLES WOULD NOT HAVE REQUIRED A WHOLE RACK REPLACEMENT (OR AS MUCH MONEY) FOR A PROBLEM SUCH AS THIS, BUT RATHER THE 2007 DESIGN WAS INTEGRATED RATHER THEN MODULAR. *TR
THE DRIVERS SIDE VISOR DOES NOT STAY UP..AT FIRST IT WAS SLIGHTLY LOOSE AROUND 50K MILES AND THEN 70K THE VISOR NO LONGER STAYS UP AT ALL. I HAVE ACTUALLY HIT MY HEAD ON IT A COUPLE OF TIMES AND IT OBSCURES MY VISION. I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. NOW I HAVE TO PAY $100 TO BUY A COMPLETELY NEW ONE. THIS IS JUST AN ACCIDENT AND A LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN. IT LOOKS TO BE A PROBLEM FOR A LOT OF TOYOTAS. MY FIANCE CANT EVEN DRIVE IT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE HE IS TALLER THAN I AM AND CANNOT SEE OUT OF IT PROPERLY. PLEASE RECALL THIS SO IT DOESNT CAUSE A TRAGEDY AT SOME POINT. *TR
I HAVE A WHINING NOISE AND VIBRATION FELT IN MY GAS PEDAL WHICH MY MECHANIC HAS DETERMINED TO BE FROM THE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY. MY RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT ON AUGUST 8, 2012 TOYOTA SENT OUT A SERVICE BULLETIN # T-SB-0130-12 WHICH DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN TO MY TOYOTA DEALER SINCE THAT TIME ADDRESSING OTHER RECALL ISSUES HOWEVER THEY NEVER MENTIONED THIS SERVICE BULLETIN NOR DID THEY CHECK IF THIS WAS AN ISSUE. IT SEEMS THE REMEDY IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY WHICH I AM SURE THEY DON'T WANT TO DO BECAUSE OF THE EXPENSE. THEIR WARRANTY IS FOR 60 MONTHS OR 60,000 MILES BUT SINCE THEIR SERVICE BULLETIN WASN'T ADDRESSED UNTIL AUGUST OF 2012, IT WOULD BE UNLIKELY UNDER NORMAL DRIVING MILEAGE THAT A VEHICLE THAT WAS 5 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME WOULD BE INCLUDED UNDER THIS WARRANTY AND THEY NEVER ADDRESSED THIS PROBLEM WHEN THEY HAD MY VEHICLE AFTER THIS DATE. DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE AND PARKED CAR. STARTED CAR 10 MINUTES LATER AND HAD NO POWER STEERING. PS WARNING LIGHT ON DASH WAS NOW ON. WITH A GREAT DEAL OF EFFORT, THE CAR COULD BE DRIVEN ABOUT A MILE BACK HOME. WHEN READING THRU THE OWNERS MANUAL, IT BECAME EVIDENT THERE WERE DIFFERENT POSSIBLE FAILURE CONDITIONS, EACH REPRESENTED BY DIFFERENT WARNING LIGHT STATES. A FLASHING LIGHT THAT WENT OFF AFTER A FEW SECONDS, A FLASHING LIGHT THAT STAYED ON, A FLASHING LIGHT THAT STAYS ON IN CONJUNCTION WITH ALL DASH WARNING LIGHTS BEING ON AT THE SAME TIME, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE STEADY LIGHT AND COMPLETE FAILURE OF ASSIST SYSTEM. I BELIEVE IT WAS SIMPLY THE LUCK OF THE DRAW THAT OUR FAILURE OCCURRED IN A PARKED CONDITION. I WAS RAISED ON A FARM DRIVING MONSTROUS OLD TRUCKS WITH NO POWER STEERING. THEY TOPPED OFF OIL AND INSTRUCTED ME TO COME BACK IN 1000 MILE INTERVALS TO DO CONSUMPTION TESTS. I FOLLOWED THEIR DIRECTION AND CAME BACK FOR SEVERAL CONSUMPTION TESTS. THEY TOPPED OFF OIL I BELIEVE ONE TIME FOR QUART ONE TIME FOR QUART. THEY INFORMED ME THIS WAS ?NORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION PER TOYOTA SPECS FOR THIS ENGINE? AND THAT I NO LONGER NEEDED TO COME IN FOR TESTS. 96,546 MILES 3/19/14 HAD OIL CHANGE, THERE WAS NO MENTION OF OIL LEVELS. 99,434 MILES 5/23/14 OIL LIGHT CAME ON, TOOK CAR IMMEDIATELY TO DEALER, WAS TOLD ?VEHICLE HAD A QUART OF OIL LEFT: IT HAS BEEN 3,000 MILES SINCE LAST OIL CHANGE. THIS IS NORMAL TECHNICIAN TOPPED OFF OIL. THE OIL LIGHT HAS NOT COME BACK ON SINCE THIS TIME. 101,628 MILES 7/23/14 WENT IN FOR OIL CHANGE. NO MENTION OF OIL LEVELS. WAS TOLD TO TOP OFF OIL HALF WAY THROUGH TILL NEXT SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. AFTER AROUND 2500 MILES CHECKED OIL AND ADDED 3 QUARTS OF OIL, CHECKED AGAIN BEFORE GOING IN FOR 5000 MILE OIL CHANGE AND ADDED 2 QUARTS. 106,232 MILES 11/06/14 WENT IN FOR OIL CHANGE INSISTING THAT THIS CAN NOT BE "NORMAL" OIL CONSUMPTION NEED TO HAVE THE ENGINE CHECKED OUT. THEY SAID THE ENGINE WAS FULL OF OIL AT THE TIME. I DROVE IT APPROXIMATELY 8.5 MILES AFTER LEAVING KOST BEFORE DECIDING TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN SCRANTON ON SUNDAY. ON MONDAY MORNING TOYOTA SAID THE CAR ARRIVED WITH NO OIL. HOW COULD THIS BE? THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE KOST PARKING LOT, IN MY DRIVEWAY OR ON THE TOW TRUCK BED ( CAN BE VERIFIED BY ALL SOURCES). IF THE CAR WERE TO HAVE SPILT A FULL ENGINE OF OIL THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SOME KIND OF EVIDENCE(BURNING SMELL, SIGHT OF LOST OIL, CAR SMOKING -BUT THERE WAS NOTHING). TOYOTA HAS DENIED THE WARRANTY CLAIM DUE TO WHAT THEY SAY IS LACK OF ENGINE LUBRICATION. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY BOGUS. THE STEERING MECHANISM MAKES A CLUNK WHEN TURNED. THE DEALER SAYS THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT NEEDS REPLACED. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS OF THIS SAME DEFECT ON THE INTERNET. TOYOTA ISSUED A BULLETIN IN 2008 TELLING DEALERS TO REPLACE THE SHAFT ON CARS STILL ON WARRANTY BUT WILL NOT REPLACE OURS BECAUSE IT IS MORE THAN 3 YEARS OLD. A MECHANICAL FAILURE AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE SUCH AS THIS SHOULD BE REPAIRED BY THE COMPANY AT THEIR COST SINCE IT IS NOT CAUSE BY USE BUT BY POOR ENGINEERING OR ASSEMBLY. *TR
MY SON WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN THE CAR STOPPED PERFORMING PROPERLY. SHAKING AND NO ACCELERATION. HE HAD TO REDUCE SPEED AND WAVE PEOPLE PAST HIM ON A 2-LANE ROAD. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE MECHANIC, THE NEXT DAY WITH THE SAME DIFFICULTY. DROVE WITH HAZARD LIGHTS ON. MY MECHANIC REPORTED THE CAR HAD LESS THAN 1 QUART OF OIL, AND THE ENGINE WAS BLOWN. I FELT THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE. NEVER ANY OIL IN DRIVEWAY. OIL HAD BEEN CHANGED WITHIN LAST 4 MONTHS AND 4000 MILES. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 63000 MILES AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED. THE CHECK ENGINE OIL LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. IT MAKES NO SENSE. COST FOR NEW ENGINE IS $7,000. I DID SOME RESEARCH. GOOGLE "TOYOTA OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE". NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. TOYOTA EVEN HAS A SERVICE BULLETIN T-SB-0094-11 THAT DESCRIBES THIS VERY ISSUE FOR THIS VERY MAKE AND VIN. ONLY IT ISN'T A RECALL, AND UNLESS YOU ARE A DEALER SERVICE CENTER YOU DO NOT RECEIVE THE BULLETIN. SO UNFORTUNATELY, THE WAY TOYOTA IS HANDLING THIS, YOU LEARN ABOUT THIS ISSUE ONLY AFTER THE CAR GIVES OUT. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS. MY 18 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER USED THIS VEHICLE TO DRIVE TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY! SPINE COMPRESSION FRACTURES OVER TIME, CONDITION HAS DETERIORATED TO IMMOBILIZATION. JUST RECENTLY LOOKED UP DETAILS OF SPEED AT WHICH AIRBAG SHOULD ENGAGE (AFTER HEARING ABOUT RECALLS) AND NOW REALIZE AIRBAG SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF AT MUCH LOWER SPEED.
