TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V383000 (SUSPENSION), BUT THE PART NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
I RECEIVED AN "URGENT SAFETY RECALL" FROM TOYOTA SOMETIME JAN - APRIL 2014, REGARDING "REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS (NO 1), ONE OF SEVERAL RECALL NOTICES I'VE RECEIVED SINCE OWNING THIS VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WHERE I CANNOT GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP, BECAUSE THE AFFECTED PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE WHEN I CALLED IN LATE MAY AND AGAIN TODAY. AND THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT TELL ME WHEN THEY WILL GET THE PART AND ADVISED TO CALL BACK AT END OF THE SUMMER. WHAT IS THE POINT OF SENDING OUT THESE URGENT SAFETY RECALL NOTICES IF THE DEALERSHIPS DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS TO FIX THEM FOR SUCH A LONG TIME? IT SHOULDN'T BE TITLED "URGENT" IF NO REMEDY CAN BE DONE TO FIX THE CAR. IF IT IS TRULY AN URGENT SAFETY ISSUE, TOYOTA SHOULD BE WORKING HARDER TO HAVE THE PARTS READY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000. UPDATED 8/27/14*CN THE VEHICLE HAS UNDERGONE 8 RECALLS. UPDATED 09/11/2014 *JS
HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN 2 TIMES TO GET THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST DONE AND BOTH TIMES THE DEALER SAYS IT'S WITHIN TOYOTA'S GUIDELINES. THE THIRD TIME I CALLED TO HAVE IT DONE THEY TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO PAY SO I JUST CONTINUE TO ADD OIL EVERY 600 MILES. I TOOK TO ANOTHER MECHANIC THEY SAID THIS IS NOT NORMAL TO BURN THIS MUCH OIL AND IT'S NOT LEAKING OIL,THEY SAID THEY COULD PULL THE ENGINE APART TO TELL ME WHY IT'S LEAKING FOR $500.00, BUT I WISH TOYOTA WOULD FIX THE ISSUE KNOWING THERE IS ONE, AND THEY HAVE AN ENHANCEMENT WARRANTY FOR THE PROBLEM GOOD UNTIL 10/2016, HOWEVER, THEY SAY I'M NOT WITHIN TOYOTA GUIDELINES, THE FIRST TIME I EVEN NOTICED THIS ISSUE WAS AFTER I HAD CAR SERVICED AT THE DEALER PRIOR TO A TRIP I WAS MAKING, MY OIL LIGHT CAME ON MY STICK HAD BURNT OIL ON IT AS IT WAS BONE DRY. I ADDED THINKING THE DEALER JUST DIDN'T DO A GOOD JOB, WELL COME TO FIND OUT, I HAVE BEEN CHECKING AND ADDING EVER SINCE. IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES LESS THAN 3,000 MILES OIL LIGHT HAS COME ON AND COMPLETELY DRY NO OIL REGISTERING ON THE DIP STICK.
WATER PUMP STARTING MAKING INCREDIBLE DIESEL / MECHANICAL GRINDING SOUNDS. COOLANT LEAKING FROM WATER PUMP. WATER PUMP BEARING OVERHEATING - ODOR CLEARLY DISCERNIBLE FROM INSIDE VEHICLE. CHECKED INTERNET - THIS IS A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT AMONG RAV4 V6 OWNERS - MANY OWNERS HAVING REPLACED WATER PUMP ON THIS YEAR VEHICLE AT 25,000K MILES! DEALERS CHARGING ANYWHERE FROM US $325.00 - $900.00. *TR
A LITTLE AFTER ITS REGULAR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE MY 2008 RAV4 STARTED TO MAKE AN ODD NOISE (RATTLING) WHEN REACHING 40 MPH AT 1500 RPM. CHECKED FLUIDS AND NOTICED THAT ENGINE OIL WAS DRY (BURNT OIL ON STICK) AND BLACK ATF. IMMEDIATELY REPLACED FLUIDS (ENGINE AND WS ATF). TOOK CAR TO DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T NOTICED ANYTHING UNUSUAL. DROVE WITH TECH AND SHOWED HIM THE NOISE AT SPECIFIED CONDITIONS. HE SAID MORE TESTS NEEDED TO BE DONE. UP UNTIL TODAY THEY ARE NOT SURE WHAT THE ISSUE MAY BE AND SUGGESTED A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT "FIX" THAT I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR MYSELF. FOUND A TSB ONLINE FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE (T-SB-0094-11). TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE AND FIX THIS ISSUE AT NO COST TO USERS. *TR
HAD THE FIX FOR THE 3RD RECALL OF THE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS IN JUNE 2014. BOTH SUSPENSION ARMS NOW ENCASED IN EPOXY AND WARNING LABELS APPLIED. RESULT OF POORLY ENGINEERED FIX IS THE INABILITY TO MAINTAIN REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITHOUT FULL REPLACEMENT OF BOTH SUSPENSION ARMS ON EVERY ALIGNMENT. TOYOTA'S FIX HAS CREATED UNDUE BURDEN OF COST ON OWNER TO MAINTAIN PROPER ALIGNMENT OR FOREGO ALIGNMENT AND HAVE RAPID WEAR OF TIRES DUE TO MISALIGNMENT RESULTING IN ADDED EXPENSE OF NEEDING TO REPLACE TIRES MORE OFTEN IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SAFE DRIVING. SEARCH OF THE INTERNET IS FINDING OTHER OWNERS HAVING SAME PROBLEM, I.E., BEARING THE COST FOR TOYOTA'S POOR INITIAL DESIGN AND POORLY THOUGHT OUT RECALL FIX.

MY OIL WARNING LIGHT KEPT COMING ON WHEN I WAS BRAKING. I HAD APPROXIMATELY 2300 MILES SINCE MY LAST OIL CHANGE BUT TOOK THE CAR IN TO GET CHECKED. THE MECHANIC FOUND THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO OIL LEFT IN THE ENGINE. SINCE THEN I HAVE TO PUT OIL IN MY ENGINE AROUND EVERY 500-700 MILES. MY CAR IS EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I JUST TOOK MY CAR INTO MY CLOSEST TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID IN 20 YEARS THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM. I FEEL LIKE THEY ARE LYING TO ME AND JUST WANT THE FAULTY PART FIXED. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC LIGHT, AND 4WD LIGHTS STAYED ON AFTER WE PURCHASED VEHICLE. WE WERE ADVISED TO DISCONNECT BATTERY TO RESET, IT WORKED UNTIL CAR WAS SHUT OFF. THEN THE LIGHTS CARE ON AGAIN, AND 4WD WOULD NOT WORK. OUR DRIVEWAY REQUIRES 4WD! TOOK IT TO TOYOTA SERVICE NEAR OUR HOME, HE CALLED WARRANTY COMPANY, THEY WOULD NOT PAY BECAUSE EVAP CANNISTER AND HOSES HAD PREVIOUS WATER DAMAGE, AND WERE RUSTED. MANLY HONDA IN SANTA ROSA HAS PUT US OFF FOR TWO AND A HALF WEEKS. THIS IS WHERE WE PURCHASED THE CAR FOR OUR DAUGHTER. THEY WILL NOT RETURN CALLS. WE WERE INFORMED TOYOTA ONLY COVERED THIS PROBLEM UP TO 70,000 MILES. TO TAKE IT TO DEALER!! THEY WILL NO LONGER RESPOND. *TR
EVAPORATIVE CONTROL (EVAP) SYSTEM DESIGN FLAW. THIS DESIGN FLAW ALLOWS WATER/DEBRIS/ETC TO ENTER THE EVAP SYSTEM, RESULTING IN THE NEED TO REPLACE PIECES OF THE EVAP SYSTEM SUCH AS FILTER EMISSION HOSES, CHARCOAL CANISTER, CANISTER VENT VALVE, OR ACCORDING TO MY LAST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP VISIT THE WHOLE EVAP SYSTEM! NEWER RAV4 MODELS HAVE BEEN UPDATED TO INCLUDE A COVERING UNDER THE CAR AS TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE IN NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS SUCH AS RAIN WITHOUT RISKING AN EMISSION HOSE OR CHARCOAL CANISTER GETTING DEBRIS IN IT OR GETTING CAUGHT ON SOMETHING. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL COUPLING ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE 114,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 116,000.
TOYOTA RAV 4 (2)- CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO REAR SUSPENSION ARM RECALLS. *SMD 2008 TOYOTA RAV 4. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER AFTER RECEIVING A RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE SUSPENSION. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE WAS ASTONISHED THAT BOTH VEHICLES NEEDED TO HAVE THE SAME PART REPLACED. ESPECIALLY ON THE 2008 MODEL, WHICH WAS 2 YEARS NEWER THAN HER OTHER VEHICLE. *JB

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V373000 (SUSPENSION) AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 13V383000 (SUSPENSION). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE WHEEL BEARING/HUB ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED AND WHILE SERVICING THE VEHICLE, THE MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THE NUT THAT GOES ONTO THE AXLE, WHICH HOLDS THE WHEEL BEARING IN PLACE ON THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING, WAS CROOKED. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE NOT COMPLETED PROPERLY. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE RECALL REMEDY INSTRUCTION FAILED TO REMEDY THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

REGARDING NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V383000 TOYOTA NOTIFIED ME OF THIS RECALL IN APRIL, 2014, AS I WAS IN THE LAST GROUP NOTIFIED. SINCE THEN, REPEATED CONTACTS TO MY DEALER RESULTED IN BEING TOLD THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. TODAY, JUNE 16, THEY STATED THEY COULD INSPECT THE CAR LATER THIS MONTH, AND IF PARTS ARE NEEDED [PARTS HAVE BEEN NEEDED IN NEARLY ALL CASES], I WOULD THEN BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST, AND IT COULD BE MANY MONTHS, IF EVER, THE PARTS WOULD ACTUALLY ARRIVE. TODAY, CUSTOMER SERVICE AT TOYOTA HQ TOLD ME THAT PARTS CAN ONLY BE ORDERED AT THE RATE OF 1 PER WEEK. A CHECK OF YOUR RECORDS INDICATES THAT LESS THAN 10% OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES HAD BEEN REPAIRED IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS OF THE RECALL. IS THIS GOOD PERFORMANCE, OR JUST A DODGE BY THE MANUFACTURER TO LIMIT THE COST OF ACTUALLY PERFORMING THE RECALL, BY MOVING SO SLOWLY THAT FEW VEHICLES ARE IN FACT REPAIRED? IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO, SHORT OF GARAGING THE CAR FOR THE NEXT YEAR; OR DRIVING A POSSIBLY UNSAFE VEHICLE? *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO FIND A FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,140 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
THE MUFFLER HAS ALREADY SHOWN CORROSION TO THE POINT IT IS LOUD AND NOW MAY CAUSE HEAT ISSUES AND VAPOR ISSUES INTO THE CAR. *TR
2008 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED 2 SERVICE RECALLS WERE PERFORMED. AFTER THE SERVICES WERE PERFORMED, THE CONSUMER STATED A FRIEND PICKUP UP THE VEHICLE, AND EXPERIENCED THE FOLLOWING EVENTS: WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO IDLE VERY ROUGH WITH CONSIDERABLE VIBRATION, AS IF THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING ON 3 CYLINDERS. THE DEALER CLAIMED WITH A LITTLE DRIVING THE SOFTWARE UPDATE WOULD WORK ITSELF OUT AND NO LONGER BE AN ISSUE. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THE ROUGH IDLE WOULD SOMETIME HAPPENS AFTER THE RECALL SOFTWARE UPDATE. OVER THE NEXT 3 WEEKS, THE CONSUMER DROVE THE VEHICLE DAILY AND IT CONTINUED TO RUN ROUGH. AS SHE APPROACHED A RED LIGHT, SHE TOOK HER FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND PLACED HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE INSTEAD ACCELERATED, AND SHE BEGAN QUICKLY PUMPING THE BRAKE PEDAL. EVENTUALLY, THE VEHICLE DID COME TO A STOP WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AT A LOWER RATE, BUT STILL RUNNING ROUGH. *JB
I BEGAN TO NOTICE A BURNT OIL SMELL WHEN I WOULD RETURN HOME FROM SCHOOL IN THE EVENING, I CHECKED MY OIL, THE DIP STICK SHOWED NOT A TRACE OF OIL! THE VEHICLE WAS HALF WAY BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AT THE TIME, MY HUSBAND ADDED 4 QUARTS OF OIL (SO WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN IT WAS EMPTY) AND BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA. THEY "CHECKED IT", CHANGED THE OIL, AND SENT US ON OUR WAY TELLING US TO MONITOR THE OIL LEVEL. THIS WAS AT 68K MILES. IT WAS NEXT DUE FOR AN OIL CHANGE AT 73,000MILES I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL YESTERDAY AT 71,000 MILES AND IT WAS NEARLY EMPTY. CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN, WAS TOLD THEY COULDN'T GET ME IN FOR 10 DAYS!! I CALLED ANOTHER TOYOTA DEALER WHO TOLD ME TO BRING IT IN. THE SERVICE MGR ACKNOWLEDGED THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH "CERTAIN RAV 4 ENGINES" AND THAT A SERVICE BULLETIN HAD BEEN ISSUED TO REPAIR THE ISSUE (NOT A RECALL-HE MADE THAT CLEAR). HE EXPLAINED THAT I WOULD HAVE TO FOLLOW THEIR PROCEDURE BEFORE IT CAN BE REPAIRED THOUGH BY DOING TWO OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS (THAT I HAVE TO PAY $24.95 FOR, AND DRIVE 1200 MILES EACH) THEN I WOULD HAVE TO AUTHORIZE THEM TO DO AN ENGINE REMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY FOR $575 TO DETERMINE IT IS NOT SOMETHING I HAD DONE TO THE CAR. I HAVE BABIED THIS VEHICLE FROM DAY ONE! I NEVER GO BEYOND 4000 MILES FOR AN OIL CHANGE, EVER. NOW I HAVE TO DRIVE MY FAMILY AROUND IN A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS VEHICLE WHILE THEY DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO REPAIR THE ENGINE THAT THEY HAVE KNOWN THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH FOR YEARS!! UNACCEPTABLE! THIS IS TERRIFYING KNOWING THAT MY ENGINE COULD SEIZE AT ANY MOMENT WHILE I AM ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING WITH MY CHILD. IT IS EQUALLY AS FRIGHTENING TO REALIZE THAT I MAY END UP HAVING TO PAY $6000+ FOR A NEW ENGINE FOR THIS PIECE OF DEFECTIVE MERCHANDISE I AM STILL PAYING FOR BECAUSE TOYOTA BELIEVES THEY ARE ABOVE THE LAW. PLEASE HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. *TR

I'VE HAD MY 08 TOYOTA RAV4 FOR OVER 4 YEARS NOW. I GET THE OIL CHANGED ON IT EVERY 5,000 MILES REGULARLY. IT HOLDS ABOUT 5 QUARTS AND WITH BEING CHANGED EVERY 5,000 MILES THAT MEANS IT IS BURNING MORE THEN 1 QUART EVERY 1,000 MILES! MY BROTHER-IN-LAW DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS BECOMING A PROBLEM WITH MANY RAV4'S WITH THE PISTONS IN THE 2AZ FE MOTOR. I LOVE THIS CAR SO MUCH AND IT BREAKS MY HEART TO KNOW THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG THAT I CAN'T FIX. I DON'T WANT TO GET A DIFFERENT CAR BUT NOW I HAVE TO!

I PURCHASE MY 2008 TOYOTA RAV 4 IN 2012 WITH 39,739 MILES, CURRENTLY IT HAS ABOUT 56,000 MILES. THE ENGINE IS BURNING OIL. NEW CLAMPS WHERE PUT ON ALL HOSES. 50 MILES LATER LIGHTS BACK ON , NOW CODE IS SAYING THE CHARCOAL CANISTER FAULTY. NOW THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. MY MECHANIC DID RESEARCH, FOUND OUT THAT THEIR HAS BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. THIS PART COST OVER 800$ I MYSELF HAVE READ OTHER RAV4 OWNERS THAT THIS ISN'T A NEW PROBLEM.
