EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION I WENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE AS I DO EVERY 3000 MILES AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS LITTLE OIL. THEY LOOKED FOR LEAKS ETC. NONE FOUND. THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE. ABOUT 1500 MILES IN MY ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON MY BROTHER IN LAW WHO IS A CERTIFIED MECHANIC FOR 30 YEARS AND TAKES CARE OF MY CAR TELLS ME MY CAR IS CONSUMING OIL AND YOUR TALKING A BIG JOB ADVISED ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER TO RUN A CONSUMPTION TEST WHICH I DID AND YES THAT IS WHAT I AM TOLD. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO UNLESS I PAY TO HAVE IT FIXES WHICH IS VERY COSTLY I WAS ADVISED TO CHECK OIL EVERY 1000 MILES AND FILL. UPON RESEARCH THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED BY NUMEROUS TOYOTA OWNERS NOT ONLY ON RAVA4'S BUT OTHER MODELS AS WELL AROUND THE 2006/2008 TIME FRAME. TOYOTA ADMITS TO PROBLEM AND FIXES IN LATER MODELS BUT DOES NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX A KNOWN DEFECT!!!! I HAVE JOINED EVERY LAW SUIT, COMPLAINT BOARD, ETC. AND FOR THIS REASON WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WAS NOT ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V245000 (AIR BAGS). THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT A WIRE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THAT THE AIR BAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH UNTIL THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH THE ENGINE, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE, TRACTION CONTROL AND ESC WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED CONTINUOUSLY UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER THREE TIMES. THE TECHNICIAN DETECTED A LEAK IN THE EVAPORATION CANISTER WHICH WAS REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, THE COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM WAS RESET TWICE ON SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FAILURE RECURRED AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 124,191.

AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED, THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000. *TR
OUR 2008 TOYOTA RAV-4 LIMITED 4 CYLINDER MODEL, BURNS TOO MUCH ENGINE OIL. THE ENGINE IS MAKING A LOT OF NOISE - IT DOES NOT SOUND HEALTHY. VERY WORRIED ABOUT THIS ENGINES LONGEVITY.
MY VIN NUMBER IS ON THEIR TSB LIST AND THEY KNEW THEIR PROBLEMS AND STILL TRYING TO PLAY GAMES. TOYOTA IS TRYING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO SCREW UP WITH CONSUMER. THEY WANT YOU TO TEST THE OIL CONSUMPTION EVEN YOU ALREADY TESTED THREE TIMES BEFORE. THEY ARE NOT ANSWERING YOUR PHONES. AUDI ALREADY LOST THEIR CASE. TOYOTA WILL BE THE SAME. THIS IS THE FIRST TOYOTA AND ALSO BE THE LAST ONE. *TR
RESISTANCE IS FELT AT INTERVALS WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. STEERING FEELS LOOSE, UNRESPONSIVE AND DANGEROUS. DEALER RECOMMENDED REPLACING INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. ONLINE RESEARCH SHOWED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND AN UPGRADED PART EXISTS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE. HAD COMPLAINT ESCALATED TO TOYOTA CORPORATE REGIONAL MANAGER. WAS ONLY OFFERED 15% OFF REPAIR AT DEALER. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE CREATED BY A DEFECTIVE PART. THANK YOU. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA RAV-4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE SITTING IDLE WITH THE BRAKES DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AS THE ENGINE RPMS ABNORMALLY INCREASED. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE, CAUSING THAT VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A THIRD VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED. THE POLICE WERE CONTACTED AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIANS WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED HER THAT THEY WOULD SEND AN INVESTIGATOR TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 40,000. THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WERE NUMEROUS OCCASSIONS WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD LURCH INTO GEAR. THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED THIS WAS CALLED JACK RABBIT STARTS. THE CONSUMER NO LONGER OWNS THE VEHICLE. EVERY TIME I MAKE A TURN (RIGHT OR LEFT), I HEAR THIS KNOCKING SOUND ON MY STEERING WHEEL. IT FEELS LIKE SOMETHING IS ABOUT TO BREAK. I JUST NOTICED THIS RIGHT AFTER I REPLACED THE BATTERY. *TR
I RECEIVED A "INTERIM" RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA STATING THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM AND THAT FAILURE OF THE REAR TIE ROD COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. THEY INSTRUCTED OWNERS TO CALL ONLY IF THEY EXPERIENCED ANY STRANGE NOISES COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I DID NOTICE THAT RECENTLY ESPECIALLY WHEN BACKING UP THAT I WOULD HEAR A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I CALLED AND THEY SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE DAY AFTER I SCHEDULED MY VEHICLE TO BE LOOKED AT THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM NO. 1 SEPARATED WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY 4 LANE HIGHWAY. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO INITIALLY START TO SWAY BACK AND FORTH AND AS I TRIED TO PULL OVER TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE I THEN LOST COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHICH THEN SPUN AROUND IN THE DIRECTION OF ON COMING VEHICLES. FORTUNATELY WE DID NOT SUFFER ANY INJURIES AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST AT THE TOP OF AN EXIT OFF RAMP. NOW THAT I EXPERIENCED HOW SERIOUS THIS REALLY IS I HAVE SERIOUS CONCERNS AS TO WHY TOYOTA DIDN'T ADVISE ME TO IMMEDIATELY BRING THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS AND DEADLY CRASH. *TR

THEY TOOK 14 DAYS TO PUT IN NEW STEERING SHAFT AND OFFERED ZERO IN-DEPTH REPORT ON FAILURE & STEERING SHAFT'S WARRANTY. RUSHED THROUGH THE JOB AND LEFT ME DYING BATTERY & ALTERNATOR. T-SB-0318-08 (STEERING SHAFT RECALL) STEERING NOW FEELS HARD SINCE THEY DIDN'T REFILL POWER STEERING RESERVOIR. MY ALTERNATOR & BATTERY WAS LEFT AS IS WITH DIMINISHING CAPACITY. I WILL ONLY PAY $150 OUT THE DOOR LABOR FOR THIS TSB SERVICE, THE REST WILL BE PAID BY TOYOTA'S DISTRICT OFFICE. WHEN CAN YOU SEND ME MY CHECK? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 RAV 4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE SUSPENSION FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE SUSPENSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT THEY PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000.
BRAKE RELEASES ON ITS OWN. WE WERE AT THE STOP LIGHT, BRAKE PADDLE FLOORED AS IF IT WAS LOOSING PRESSURE. IMMEDIATELY RE APPLIED THE BRAKE AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. SUBSEQUENTLY IT STARTED HAPPENING SAME, AND IT NOW HAPPENS MOST OF THE TIME, WE NEARLY AVOIDED COLLISION WITH THE FRONT VEHICLE. IF BREAK IS HELD FOR MORE THAN 10-15 SECONDS, THE VEHICLE BRAKE SYSTEM IS UNABLE TO HOLD BRAKE PADDLE IN ITS POSITION AND STARTS FLOORING (HILL IS MORE PROBLEMATIC). IN PAST, WE TALKED TO THE DEALER DURING OIL CHANGE VISITS, THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH BRAKE SYSTEM. TALKED TO DEALER TODAY AGAIN THEY SAID IT WOULD COST $109 FOR DIAGNOSIS, AGREED AND INFORMED ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE HAVING SAME PROBLEM AND GAVE COPY OF SIMILAR EVENTS FROM THIS SITE DATABASE. THEY CAME BACK AND SAID TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT IT AND THEY ARE WORKING ON THE FIX, VEHICLE MAY NEED REPROGRAMMING, THEY DO NOT KNOW THE FIX YET. THEY WILL SEND PAPERWORK FOR THE RECALL. DEALER WAS NICE ENOUGH TO FORGO THE DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE. HOPE TOYOTA COMES OUT WITH THE FIX SOON ENOUGH... *TR
LETTER TO THE ADMINISTRATOR FROM RE BRAKE PEDAL ON HIS 2008 RG4 TOYOTA *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS EXTREMELY CLOSE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. ALSO THE BRAKING DID NOT BECOME EFFECTIVE, UNTIL THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PRESSED DOWN TO ABOUT THE SAME LEVEL AS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THEY COULD NOT ADJUST THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TWO PEDALS.

THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AS THE AIR BAG SPIRAL CABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V245000 (AIR BAGS). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 153,132 AND THE APPROXIMATE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 153,136.
I WAS MAKING A SLOW SPEED TURN WHEN, WITHOUT WARNING, IT BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER, AS IF THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING. AS I ACCELERATED THE STEERING STARTED WORKING AGAIN. A FEW DAYS LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND THIS TIME THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. BOTH TIMES THIS HAPPENED IT ALMOST CAUSED A COLLISION. I ENDED UP TAKING IT TO THE DEALER AND LEARNED THE ALTERNATOR WAS GOING BAD. AN ALTERNATOR ON A FOUR YEAR OLD VEHICLE WITH 60K MILES SHOULD LAST LONGER. I'VE SINCE LEARNED, FROM SAFETY SITES, THAT THIS IS A COMMON SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE RAV AS THE STEERING IS ELECTRICALLY POWERED. THERE IS ALSO SOME INDICATION THE ALTERNATORS ARE FAILING TOO SOON. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ALONG AND HEARD A SMALL THUD, AND, WITH NO OTHER SOUND OR WARNING, THE CAR WENT OUT OF CONTROL. THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO STOP, AS I WAS DRIVING SLOWLY. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND LOOKED, THE REAR WHEEL WAS HANGING OFF. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE AND SURELY WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING AT A FASTER SPEED. TOYOTA HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *TR
I PURCHASED THIS RAV4 NEW IN 2007. I'VE ALWAYS HAD IT SERVICED AT THE TOYOTA DEALER WHENEVER IT WAS DUE. AT ABOUT 50,000 MILES THE ENGINE STARTED USING OIL AT THE RATE OF A QUART OF OIL EVERY 800 MILES OR SO. I MENTIONED THIS TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE PERSONNEL SEVERAL TIMES AND WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT IT WAS NORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION FOR THIS ENGINE. I RECENTLY DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM, AND APPARENTLY TOYOTA DOES NOT SEEM TO WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ENGINE DEFECT. OBVIOUSLY, THE SERVICE TECHS ARE INSTRUCTED TO TELL THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS OIL CONSUMPTION IS NORMAL. TOYOTA SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND MAKE GOOD ON THIS PROBLEM.
LOUD NOISE FROM BACK OF CAR AND THEN RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION COLLAPSED CAUSING ME TO LOOSE STEERING CONTROL OF VEHICLE. NO OTHER CARS AROUND, ROAD WAS STRAIGHT AND LEVEL WITH JUST GRASS TO THE SIDE. BRAKES STILL WORK SO CAR WAS BROUGHT TO STOP AS IT WENT BY ITSELF TO THE RIGHT. THIS IS A ONE OWNER CAR THAT WAS NEVER ABUSED OR OFF-ROADED. CAR WAS TAKEN BY FLATBED TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHO REPLACED THE RIGHT REAR INNER/OUTER TIE RODS AT NO COST AND GAVE ME A FREE CAR WASH. *TR *JS
THE 2008 RAV4'S SEEM TO HAVE A SERIOUS DEFECT WITH THE ENGINES BURNING A LOT OF OIL DUE TO BAD PISTON RINGS. THIS DEFECT IS COSTING RAV4 OWNERS QUITE A BIT OF MONEY AND TOYOTA ISN'T RECALLING THE ENGINES FOR REPAIR. TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD REASONABLE FOR THE DESIGN FLAWS AND GET THESE CARS FIXED RIGHT AWAY BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENS TO SOMEONE. *TR
I TOOK MY 2008 TOYOTA RAV4 TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR ITS SCHEDULE APPOINTMENT, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE RACK AND PINION AND SHAFT NEEDED REPLACEMENT. RESEARCHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ONLINE, IT WAS EVIDENT THAT MANY RAV4 OWNERS WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME SITUATION. THIS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MANY RAV4S. A SO CALLED DEPENDABLE CAR SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE REACHING 100,000 MILES. CERTAINLY, TOYOTA MUST CLEARLY KNOW THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND SHOULD ADDRESS IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT WHICH CAN DISRUPT THE SAFETY OF OUR COMMUNITIES. *TR
CAR WAS PULLING INTO PARKING SPACE. SUDDENELY, ENGINE REVVED UP, ACCELERATED, AND JUMPED THE CURVE. WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR WHEN APPLIED THE BRAKES. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS BURNING OIL TO EMPTY EVERY THREE THOUSAND MILES. THE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED THAT THE OIL BE CHANGED EVERY FIVE THOUSAND MILES. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. THE DEALER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS BURNING OIL AT A NORMAL RATE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND FILED A COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000.
APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES AFTER I STARTED UP MY CAR AND BEGAN DRIVING TODAY I BEGAN TO NOTICE A STRANGE AND STRONG ODOR. I HAD MY DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW DOWN (POWER WINDOWS) AND INITIALLY ATTRIBUTED THE ODOR TO A LARGE TRUCK THAT WAS SEVERAL CAR LENGTHS AHEAD OF ME. I NOTICED THAT THE ODOR PERSISTED EVEN ONCE THE TRUCK WAS NO LONGER VISIBLE TO ME OR IN CLOSE PROXIMITY. AT THAT POINT I THEN ENTERED ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY VIA THE ENTRANCE RAMP, AND GOT MY SPEED UP TO THE SPEED LIMIT OF 65 MILES PER HOUR. AS I WAS DRIVING I NOTICED A LARGE AMOUNT OF SMOKE COMING UP FROM MY POWER WINDOW SWITCHES ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR. IN ADDITION TO THE SMOKE I COULD SEE AN ACTUAL FLAME BURNING UNDERNEATH THE SWITCHES. MY INITIAL RESPONSE WAS FEAR AND PANIC, BUT I WAS ABLE TO FIND A SAFE SPOT TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS TO DIAL 911, BUT I WAS AFRAID BY THE TIME SOMEONE ARRIVED THE CAR MIGHT BURST INTO FLAMES AND BLOW UP!! I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT THAT I NEEDED TO TRY TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE SOMEHOW AS MY CAR WAS FILLING WITH SMOKE AND THE ODOR WAS OVERWHELMING. I QUICKLY LOOKED AROUND TO SEE IF I HAD ANY BOTTLED WATER IN THE CAR-BUT I DID NOT. THE ONLY LIQUID I HAD ACCESSIBLE TO DOWSE THE FLAMES WAS MY ICED COFFEE-SO I POURED A SMALL AMOUNT OVER THE SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING FROM THE SWITCHES TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE, BUT IT CONTINUED TO BURN. I THEN PROCEEDED TO POUR HALF OF MY ICED COFFEE OVER THE SWITCHES WHICH DID FINALLY EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. AS A RESULT OF THE FIRE THE ONLY WINDOW THAT WILL ACTUALLY MOVE NOW IS THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW. THE PASSENGER'S WINDOW WILL NOT MOVE AT ALL AND THE TWO REAR WINDOWS WILL ONLY MOVE IF USING THE SWITCHES ON THE BACK DOORS. AS A RESULT OF THE FIRE MY CAR NOW HAS A VERY DISTINGUISHABLE BURNT ODOR TO IT! NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS WAS ONE OF THE SCARIEST EXPERIENCES I HAVE HAD WHEN DRIVING MY CAR. *TR
I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE IN A LOT IN FRONT OF A BUILDING. IN A SPLIT SECOND THE CAR HAD JUMPED THE CURB UP ONTO THE SIDEWALK AND CRASHED THROUGH THE BRICK WALL AND WINDOW IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA RAV4 AND IT HAS HAD A WHINING SOUND WHEN IDLING OR ACCELERATING FOR A WEEK. TODAY I WAS DRIVING IT AND THE POWER STEERING QUIT WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT. NEW BATTERY INSTALLED LAST MONTH. WE HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE NEW FROM THE DEALERSHIP, HAD 2 RECALLS FIXED FOR AIR BAG SENSOR AND FLOOR MATS, BUT NO OTHER PROBLEMS UNTIL THIS. *TR

REAR WHEEL SUPPORT FAILED. WHEEL BENT TO THE SIDE CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL AND NEAR ACCIDENT. THE MECHANIC REPORTED THAT RIGHT REAR END LINK BENT. RIGHT REAR WHEEL TIE ROD HAVE COME OFF CENTER NUT AND NO THREAD REMAINING AND RIGHT REAR SHOCK LEAKING. THEY REPLACED RIGHT REAR-END LINK TIE ROD AND SHOCK. PERFORMED WHEEL ALIGNMENT. THE SAME TOYOTA DEALER PERFORMED PRIOR ALIGNMENT NOVEMBER 20, 2009. WHEN I HAD THE NEW ALIGNMENT CHECKED (BUYING NEW TIRES) JUST FEW DAYS LATER I WAS TOLD THAT THE ALIGNMENT WAS STILL OFF. THE TOYOTA DEALER REFUSE (BY RESCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS) TO RECHECK THE ALIGNMENT AND REPAIR IT. AT AROUND 9:30 AM ON JULY 8, I WAS ON I-15 IN S. UTAH WHEN MY RIGHT REAR TIE ROD FAILED. VERY SCARY AND I WAS LUCKY I DID NOT END UP ROLLED OVER IN THE DITCH, HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE, OR GET HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. I HAD NO IDEA WHY MY CAR WAS SO SUDDENLY OUT OF CONTROL. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT I HAD BLOWN A FRONT WHEEL. THERE WAS NO PREVIOUS WARNING, SUCH AS A SHIMMY OR VIBRATION OR ANY STEERING ISSUES AT ALL. I ASKED THE TOW TRUCK TO TAKE ME TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHICH WAS ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY. HOWEVER, HE CONVINCED ME THAT IT WAS SIMPLE TO REPLACE THE TIE ROD AND SINCE MY RAV4 WAS A 2008, AFTERMARKET PARTS WOULD BE EASY TO GET FROM NAPA. IT WAS A SUNDAY, SO I ENDED UP GETTING THE CAR DROPPED OFF AT GOODYEAR IN CEDAR CITY, SINCE I WOULD NEED AN ALIGNMENT AFTER THE NEW TIE ROD WAS PUT IN. ON MONDAY MORNING I FOUND OUT YOU CAN ONLY GET THE TIE ROD PART FROM THE DEALER AND THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY IN STOCK, SO HAD TO WAIT UNTIL WEDNESDAY TO GET IT FIXED. AFTER MY CAR RECEIVED THE FIRST RECALL SERVICE (EARLY 2014) FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION, ABOUT 5000 MILES LATER I BEGAN TO HEAR NOISES AT FREEWAY SPEEDS FROM THE PASSENGER REAR TIRE AREA. NOT LONG AFTER THIS NOISE STARTED, I RECEIVED THE (MAILED FROM TOYOTA) SECOND RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE BACK SUSPENSION. THIS WAS IN SEPT 2013. EACH MONTH I CALL TOYOTA FOR THE SECOND RECALL SERVICE AND THEY NEVER "HAVE THE PARTS NECESSARY" FOR THE SECOND RECALL SERVICE. EACH TIME THERE IS NO "IDEA" WHEN THESE PARTS WILL BE IN. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT, HOWEVER, THIS INQUIRY IS ABOUT THE ENGINE OIL. MY WIFE BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE NEW, THE ENGINE IS A 4 CYLINDER (2AZ-FE). THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS AND IT CONTINUES. EVERY 1400 TO 2000 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, AND WHEN I THE ENGINE OIL, ITS ALWAYS TWO (2) QUARTS LOW. I NEVER SEE ANY EVIDENCE OF OIL BURNING IN THE EXHAUST; NO OIL LEAKS ON THE DRIVEWAY, NOTHING. IT'S AS IF THE OIL DISAPPEARS. THIS SHOP SUGGESTS THAT WE ADD IN AMES OIL EVERY OTHER OIL CHANGE (EVERY 3500 TO 5000 MILES), AND THAT SHOULD MAKE THE OIL CHANGES GO FROM 1400 MILES TO APPROXIMATELY 3500 MILES. WHEN WE GOT HOME & RAV WAS COOLED OFF WE CHECKED THE OIL.....AND GUESS WHAT, I HAD NO OIL AGAIN! 2008 (STARTED AT 20,000 MILES, 1 YEAR OUT OF WARRANTY) TOYOTA RAV 4 STARTED A CLUNKING NOISE IN THE DRIVE SHAFT WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THAT THE YOKOHAMA GEOLANDAR G91A RADIAL TUBELESS M+S MADE IN JAPAN D7475L-11, 225/65R17-101H INSTALLED FROM FACTORY WHEN I BOUGHT THE RAV4 (AS NEW VEHICLE). I CALLED TOYOTA, WHICH ISSUED CASE #:[XXX], SAYING THAT TOYOTA'S WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THE TIRES. TOYOTA REFERRED ME TO YOKOHAMA, FULLERTON, CA, TEL: (800) 722-9888. I CALLED YOKOHAMA WHICH ISSUED CASE #: [XXX]. YOKOHAMA REFERRED ME TO TIREPLUS, EAST LYME, CT. I TOOK THE RAV4 IMMEDIATELY TO[XXX] AT TIREPLUS. HE DETERMINED THAT THE THREADS OF THE 4 TIRES WERE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION (#19); HOWEVER, EACH OF THE TIRES (ALL 4 TIRES) ARE CRACKING BETWEEN THE THREADS. IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE FROM MANUFACTURING AS MY RAV4 HAS ONLY BEEN DRIVEN FOR 16,600 MILES. YOKOHAMA INDICATED THAT THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE TIRES COVERING 100% OF THE COST THAT THEY WILL ONLY COVER 70%. TOYOTA AND YOKOHAMA SHOULD HAVE SOLD ME THIS RAV4 WITH TIRES THAT ADHERED TO QUALITY STANDARDS - THAT DO NOT RISK THE LIVES OF MY FAMILY, RELATIVES, FRIENDS, THE PUBLIC IN GENERAL. AFTER COMPLAINING TO THE DEALER, THEY OFFERED TO PAY FOR THE PART (APPROX. $275.00) AND WE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LABOR CHARGE ($109.00) THE SERVICE AND DEALERSHIP MANAGERS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THERE WAS A KNOWN ISSUE ALTHOUGH MANY CAR FORUMS ARE RIFE WITH COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE. CALLED AND SPOKE WITH A TOYOTA SUPERVISOR ON FRIDAY - AGAIN - WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTA COULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO ASSIST ME. WAS TOLD "ITS NOT OUR PROBLEM. THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO." *TR
I WAS CROSSING A PARKING LOT AND PULLING OUT INTO A STREET. I STOPPED THEN PULLED FORWARD, SO I COULD SEE IF ANY CARS WERE APPROACHING. A CAR WAS APPROACHING SO I PRESSED THE BRAKES, THEN THE CAR SURGED FORWARD. IT FELT LIKE WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATES. BECAUSE A CRASH WAS IMMINENT, I DECIDED MY BEST CHANCE WAS TO MOVE MY FOOT TO THE GAS PETAL AND SPEED UP. I DROVE THE CAR STRAIGHT AND THEN TO THE LEFT. THE OTHER DRIVER LAID ON HIS HORN, SLOWED DOWN AND DROVE ON. I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN EARLY NOVEMBER 2011 FROM FRED ANDERSON TOYOTA. IT APPEARS TO NEVER HAVE BEEN WRECKED. IT HAD AROUND 23,300 MILES ON IT AT TIME OF PURCHASE. THAT NIGHT OF 02/21, I CHECKED CONSUMER REPORTS ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON 2008 TOYOTA RAV4. THE NEXT MORNING, I REMOVED THE FLOOR MAT FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR. IT DID NOT APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN MOVED BEFORE. THERE ARE 2 HOLES AT THE BACK OF THE MAT AND ONE OF THE HOLES HAD A BLACK RUBBER HOOK DEVICE HOLDING IT TO THE FLOOR. THE OTHER HOLE (BACK RIGHT SIDE) DID NOT HAVE A HOOK. WHEN I ENTERED THE VIN ON THE TOYOTA WEBSITE, IT SHOWED A REPAIR ORDER FOR A CAR WITH 30,599 MILES ON 11/08/2012. MY CAR STILL DOES NOT HAVE THAT MANY MILES. 2008 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO RECALL FOR CURTAIN SHIELD AIRBAG SENSOR *TGW WHEN THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE RECALL PERFORMED, THE DEALER INFORMED HIM THEY DO NOT PERFORM RECALLS ON SATURDAYS.
THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR STARTED SAGGING. FOR A WHILE I COULD PUSH IT BACK UP AND IT WOULD STAY. AFTER A COUPLE MONTHS, I COULD NOT USE IT ON THE SIDE WINDOW, IT JUST HUNG DOWN. THE TECH TOPPED OFF OIL. I PICK UP RAV AT 1:30 P FROM DEALER AND CHECKED OIL LEVEL. THE TECH OVER FILLED THE OIL ABOUT 8 OZ. I VERIFIED THIS WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE HE SAID HE DID NOT KNOW WHY TECH WOULD OVER FILL IT. THE DEALER WOULD LIKE TO RECHECK OIL LEVEL IN 1000 MILES. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL HAD BECOME STIFF AND HARD TO MANEUVER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT NOT TO DRIVE UNTIL THE REPAIRS WERE COMPLETE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 23,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 25,500.
