NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Toyota RAV4. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
NO ACCIDENTS
On [XXX], I opened the unblemished retractable glass roof of my 2022 RAV4 XSE. The rear windows were rolled down approximately 4 inches. No other cars/people were in front, next to, or behind me. As I accelerated to approximately 35 mph, I heard an explosive blast and peered upward. I noticed that the retractable glass roof panel had completely shattered. Shards of the roof rained on me as I drove home. Once home, I closed the roof just enough to secure my vehicle. The motor /closing mechanisms were operable. Glass shards were present in the tracks as well as on the top of the intact remainder of the glass roof. Glass shards were present in both the front and back seats of the vehicle. Upon inspection, there were NO visible pits/holes in the shattered roof; however, the roof was almost completely displaced from the edges of the moonroof’s seal/frame (see pictures). I contacted my Insurance to file a claim, and my SUV was towed to Toyota. 6/24 Toyota’s estimator left a voicemail stating that the glass roof was being assessed. I left a message asking for the cause of the damage. On 6/25, Toyota called and stated that the roof panel was being replaced. The estimator was unable to determine the cause of the breakage and mentioned that this was the first time they had to replace a panoramic sunroof. No other outside agencies (only Toyota Carlsbad Collision) inspected and/or addressed the damaged glass roof. A faulty design and /or improper manufacturing of the glass was never addressed or considered. 6/27 Toyota billed my insurance $1971.52 minus the $500 deductible I was required to pay per the terms of my insurance. *** It should be noted that there are a number of RAV4 cases involving sudden glass roof explosions. These lawsuits allege that glass sunroofs of RAV4s shatter under normal driving conditions. In fact, on May 3, 2024, a class action suit brought before the US District Court in California, rejected Toyota’s rebuttal, and the lawsuit is moving forward. The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while driving and coming to a stop, there was a sound of moving water coming from the rear driver's side and passenger's side doors. The contact stated that upon opening the doors, she was able to partially drain the water; however, water was still leaking inside the rear driver's side and passenger's side doors during rainy weather. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.
I had another incident this week where I was stranded in a parking lot and had to call Triple A to get my car running properly again. They tested the battery and belts and all were good. When trying to start my car, it locked and said: "ENGINE STOPPED, POWER STEERING LOW". Not only was my car locked, but it was shaking and making scary noises. The same thing happened to me at a drive-thru a year ago. My car is a Toyota Rav 4 LE 2022 with 20K miles on it and is too new to be having these problems. Through looking up this issue on Google, I have seen that there are a good amount of Rav 4s that are newer dealing with this same issue.
The Multimedia dashboard is completely blank. Not able to use sound, gps, music, etc. Cant set time or any adjustments to vehicle. This seems to be a manufacturing issue. Dealer said there is nothing they can do about it. Was told will need to pay $1600 to replace it. Don't know how long a new won will last. Can't keep spending $1600 everytime the electrical system Malfunctions. Please help.
The radio screen in this vehicle keeps going black. When it is connected to CarPlay, the GPS will randomly shut off. At times, the radio steering wheel controls and the volume knob on the radio will not adjust the volume creating a safety hazard as I not able to lower or turn off the volume. Freeway Toyota in Hanford California did a software update about a year ago in relation to the same issue but the issue persists.
Vehichle has stranded me twice with multiple error messages when I try to start it. All kinds of lights go on and off on the dash and messages include: Parking Brake Unavailable, Voltage Abnormality Steering Power Low, Hybrid System Not Available, Braking Power Low-Stop in a Safe Place, Antilock Brake System Malfuntion, Rear Cross Traffic Alert Unavailable, Blindspot Monitoring Unavailable, Pre-Collision System Unavailable, Visit Dealer. It makes all kind of weird noises and vibrations in the break peddle also during this. I have been told this is a problem with low battary of the 12V but that battery is charged by the Hybrid battary and does nothing but run electronic features, does not start the vehichle. Have read this has happened to people while actually driving the vehichle, I am scared this will cause an accident. 2 year old vehicle.
Fuel Injector failed, causing the engine to run extremely rich, misfire, and cause severe drivability issues. Issue occurred just outside vehicle base warranty. Problem was verified and confirmed by vehicle dealership. MIL was illuminated when drivability issue and malfunction started.
On [XXX], I was driving in a rain storm on [XXX]. I pulled off the highway into a parking lot and the car stalled out. The check engine light and the power steering light came on. I tried to start the car 3-4 times over the next fifteen minutes and it did not start. I waited a few more minutes and the car started and the lights cleared from the dashboard. I was able to drive 120 miles home with no issues with the vehicle. I called the Toyota of Massapequa dealership service department the next morning and they offered to inspect the car. I declined as the dashboard lights were gone and the car seemed to be running fine. I did have them check out the car when I brought it in for the annual NYS inspection and oil change in August 2024. The technician found no issues with the engine and there were no codes in the computer. The car has not given me a problem since this happened. The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while either driving at various speeds or coming to a stop, a moving water sound would emit from both the rear driver and passenger side doors. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer on multiple occasions to have the doors drained to prevent mold from developing inside the vehicle. The contact was also informed by the dealer that the failure was a result of the vehicle's design and that no other repairs could be made to address the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
Tire split on the inside of the tire wall about 1 inch up. Less than 20,000 miles on them. I do not believe this is normal. 225/60 R18. Car was serviced by Toyota on March 21st.
Loud clunk over bumps, suspension sounds loose and dangerous. Vehicle was purchased new and has 24,443 miles, this sound is NOT normal for a new vehicle.
Steering wheel is deteriorating on vehicle. It is low mileage and and has one driver.
When driving on the interstate, the sunroof (aka, the moonroof) spontaneously shattered. It was most certainly NOT stuck by any object.
My wife and I were traveling down SR74 mp 12 and rear ended a cow at 68 miles per hour. The airbags did not deploy from impact and yet the car is totaled the hood started through the safety glass of the windshield.
My vehicle is 2 years old and had 17,000 miles on it when the steering wheel began to peel and chip. Toyota says that it was "caused by the user". There are reports all over the internet about this same problem on this same vehicle.
Was driving to my daughters in the rain. As was pulling in my rav 4 started jumping and sputtering and cut off with a message of “engine stopped, power steering low”. Tried to crank it and same thing. Let it set over night and cranked fine. Took to dealership and they said could not find anything wrong. Have googled and tons of this same report on there but no solution. Needs to be recalled and fixed. Car just cuts off while driving
1.Air conditioning - evaporator drain hose is not connected and that’s why it’s pouring water into the passenger side, and there is mold and odor, per Toyota of Montgomery. Available for inspection. 2.Mold is health hazard - increased migraines and respiratory issues. 3.Issue found and confirmed by Toyota of Montgomery, after repeated complaints that AC wasn't working properly during regular service visits. Audio of this information from Service Manager. 4.To my knowledge the problem has existed since purchased (brand new). I happened to discover the water [XXX]. Odor has been there almost the whole time I have owned the car. There have been no warnings, messages, recalls or notification that the problem existed. Contacted Toyota Manufacturing [XXX] , waiting for call back at this time. Note: I have audio recordings of dealerships' employees including GM, Service Manager, Sales Manager, Salesman and service personnel. I don't know how to load them here from my phone. Sunroof blew out on its own without being hit or touched
Safety issue: "Engine Stopped/Started: Due to Steering Power Low" Yesterday, it was heavy rain. My new 2022 RAV4 shut down and would not start due to the warning sign "Steering Power Low." I restarted a few times, but the whole car was jerking and the rpm's were fluttering up and down. The yellow check engine light and the orange warning signs, followed by an exclamation point, came on, along with the messages "Engine Stopped Steering Power Low" and "Not Ready to Drive." then shut down the car. I called for a pickup instead and was not able to start the car until the next day. It was so terrifying, and I was fortunate that the accident did not occur. What would happen if it were to happen as I or other RAV4 owners were in the middle of the road or nowhere for help? As I looked up problems with the new RAV4 online, other RAV4 owners had the same issues, with zero diagnosed reports from Toyota dealers (see links below). [XXX] [XXX] This is a safety concern; I'd be happier that the accidents have not happened yet. So, I urge the Toyota manufacturer to investigate the issue, rectify it, and start making a recall of the 2019–2024 RAV4 to fix the problems before an accident occurs. The power lift gate sometimes closes all by itself when you're leaning inside. When that happens, I need to push-up on it to make it stop but then it'll start to close again all by itself. It doesn't make any difference whether you're leaning inside or you're just standing there; It sometimes starts Closing. This usually happens when it opens only half way and I have to go back and push it up manually.
The contact owned a 2022 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 MPH, the steering wheel independently veered in the right direction. As a result, the vehicle crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle. The contact's vehicle flipped twice and the driver's side of the vehicle was severely damaged. The air bags deployed. The contact and the back seat passenger received medical treatment. The contact sustained a lower back injury and heart issues, and the passenger sustained a bump on the head. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence, then the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000. The VIN was not available.
On 11/15/23 I went to Byers Toyota Dealership and asked them to check my car due to the gas smell inside of the car when driven and outside of my car when parked for a longer period of time. The smell is coming from the rear. The car also has a very strong gas smell when the tank is open to pump gas. I did not notice any leaks. On the visit on 11/1523, they fixed the leaking evaporator according to your bulletin from May 2023 to alleviate the burning oil smell coming from my car’s HVAC heater. They also checked the fuel pump and told me that I have the correct one and it should function as designed. The service advisor told me that the gas smell is exhaust fumes and it is normal for Toyota type of engine. They did not have any explanation for the fuel smell when my car is parked. Since the smell was still present, I scheduled another appointment at the dealership on 1/3/24, they kept my car overnight but they were not able to duplicate any of my concerns. I did not contact Toyota Customer Care because they can be very unpleasant if the dealership cannot duplicate the problem.
During a heavy rain period , the vehicle's forward collision warming sensor came on momentarily and after a few seconds it went off. This happen while driving on local roads and road was wet from the rain. And there were no cars ahead or behind me. Spoke about this with the service department at toyota dealer and they mentioned this was likely from from the rain blocking the sensor.
The Blind Spot Warning system fails to alert the driver when a vehicle in the adjacent lane is partially behind the current vehicle. It only activates when the nearby vehicle is completely behind the current vehicle. Due to this limitation, the system does not provide adequate warnings for nearby vehicles, which has nearly caused several accidents when the driver attempted to change lanes.
I was in a collision which was a tbone situation on the drivers side and the drivers side or front airbags did not deploy.
I bought a NEW rav-4 toyota last year, 2022 model. I have about 10,500 miles on it and suddenly my moon roof (back sun roof) shattered. There was nothing around to throw rocks up on top of my car so its nearly impossible for it to be from an "outdoor influence". I decided that I would open up a claim with Toyota, they have not even tried to advocate for my side; in fact no one asked for my side of the story until I said no one had asked me. It is not under warranty because its the moon roof and it is from "ware and tare" but no where does it say glass is not covered, and then they said that it would be covered only if proven from a manufacture/car fault or malfunction. My moon roof has no point of impact, hence the thought it was caused by pressure. Then I looked it up, this has happened to 100s of people on their rav4 2021, some of which got it covered by Toyota. I have been talking to a case manager (after weeks of trying to reach one) and he basically said that even if I send them these reports of it previously happening he won't bother looking at them; and that the specialist team are bias to Toyota so they will also say its outside causes. I have been pushed around, looked down on, and not advocated for. They also won't do ANY repair on my car until Toyota says okay, or I file an insurance claim, so they have had my car for 2 weeks doing nothing on it. Not only that they upsold me on the moon roof, encouraged me to do it, my $500 upgrade is now costing me $5000 dollars to fix. This is a dangerous reoccurring problem, what if my shade wasn't closed and the glass hit myself or passengers, of if cars behind me ran over glass chunks and caused flat tires or window chips etc. In addition the way the situation has been handled makes me and my Toyota loyal family not want to buy a Toyota again!!
While driving at highway speed, check engine light came on along with warning message in multifunction indicator stating "Hybrid System Malfunction. Diminished Power. Contact Dealer", and car immediately decelerated from 60 mph to about 35 mph. When releasing accelerator, car shuddered. Once stopped, car accelerated very poorly, and barely was ablate ascend hills in neighborhood (5-10 mph going up hills). hybrid car appeared to be operating on gas engine only, and electrical system for traction motors appeared to be short circuiting.
This RAV4 is having acceleration issues. While driving it randomly has issues at the time of acceleration. It has happened from a stop to a go, and gaining speed. This issue has put me into an incredibly vulnerable situation as I was very close to being hit by a semi while trying to merge onto the high way twice. When I pressed down on the accelerator, the engine hesitated to start gaining speed slowing down the speed needed to safely merge on to the highway. I have taken it in and all I am told is that there are no codes found and the issue can't be duplicated.
The Engine Coolant Bypass Valve is a known issue across the 2019-Present RAV4 generation. We have taken our RAV4 to the dealership numerous time for the “Maintenance Required Soon” message that comes up when the car starts. The dealer always says that is is just a reminder for us to get our vehicle serviced at 20,000. The service interval message is supposed to only come on at every 5,000, not every 3,000. We took it by our local auto parts store, and the man that works there has a 2019 RAV4 that has the same problem. They had to take theirs to the dealer and have the Coolant Bypass Valve replaced. If not addressed soon, it could cause the engine to overheat. The man at the auto parts store said it doesn’t hurt to drive it but it is best not to prolong it. There needs to be an investigation of a recall started on this, as it can be a very confusing situation. It makes people think the car is just reminding you of your service maintenance interval. But this is not what this message means. When you take it to the dealer, they are clueless and they will give you the runaround. While on eastbound I-80, my tire pressure sensor light came on. Approximately 5-8 minutes later, my right REAR tire came off my car. I was in the slow lane; however, when I went to slow down even more, my brakes failed. I had no brakes on I-80 with only 3 tires. I placed my car in neutral and coasted 1/2 in the slow lane & 1/2 in the bike lane until my car would stop.
6/15/23 @ 18,357 miles the car was given a four wheel alignment at the owners request. Due to loud tire noise and visible cupping on the right rear inside edge, it was clear the car's wheel alignment was wrong. The dealer's before and after alignment is attached. When presented the before and after, I noted RR Camber was.-2.3 vs. a range of -1.8 to -0.3 degrees. The reading was unchanged from initial. They advised me the camber cannot be adjusted and is "fixed" from the Factory. The form also read "One of more value are not within specification. Tire wear, handling and safety problems may result". But they had no remedy. I escalated at Dealer. Dealer opened a ticket with Toyota to look at my car. Of note, my Sister in Law's RAV4car has the same issue. I felt I had made my concerns clear and Toyota Corp would address. 2/1/24 At 30,345 the problem is still unresolved and dealer gave me Toyota Corp number and I opened case 240201000061. 4 calls later I am told to bring my car to dealer 2/20/24. Research shows TSB 0042-14 for earlier RAV4. My safety problem is not new to Toyota, it is just a later model. When I told Toyota Corp their response from 6/15/23 to 2/1/24 is unacceptable, they took no ownership. When I asked if I should drive an unsafe car they said it is my choice. When I advised them of the language from the dealer said the tires were unsafe, they said the Dealer is independent from Toyota. In short, the dealer is "Independent". Toyota has a problem with their design using a static camber strut which causes premature wear which can lead to a blow out as shown by forums. Toyota is only interested in getting the car to 36,000 miles and little focus on safe design. I was surprised not to see this already listed. Perhaps it exists under another year? A company Hard Race has made adjustable rear Toe Arms for the RAV4. The dealer confirmed same.
Lurching transmission when under mild acceleration at low speeds. Infotainment system does not work correctly and causes all infotainment controls to become unresponsive.
I was at stop position. i pressed the hold button and then took my foot off the break. when traffic started moving i pressed the hold button again with my foot still on floor the car started jumping and pressing the the two other car on my front. the two other cars got totaled.
Apple Carplay does not function posing a safety hazard. When connected, volume is unable to be lowered via the steering wheel controls or the factory installed radio. As such, in an emergency, the volume could not be lowered to communicate with emergency services. Dealer updated radio to latest software on 8/3/23 but the problem persists. Apple is aware of the problem but does not have a solution.
When I started my car there was an overwhelming smell of gas. I immediately turned it off and looked under the hood at which time I realized a hose was melted. When the engine is on, gas sprays from the melted hose. I have had regular maintenance which was just 1 month ago. No warning lights were on. I purchased this vehicle new in September 2022. I am extremely concerned that this happened in a new vehicle which has had regular maintenance. Luckily it did not catch fire. I have contacted the dealership who sent a tow truck; however, the vehicle needs to have the engine on to put it in neutral and release the parking brake. The tow truck operator was therefore unable to tow it until the hose is replaced but dealership maintenance is unavailable today due to it being a holiday.
There seems to be an issue on these body styles on Toyota Rav4 where there is an opening in lower bumper and rocks and road debris come in and put a hole in the AC Condenser. Toyota is aware of these issues but will not address and the customer is out $1500 repairs. I consider this a safety issue because every time this happens Freon is released into the atmosphere and the government is very concerned with this as is evident by the license and safety mechanisms in place for technicians handling the freon and repairs.
I was driving on I-91 in stop-and-go traffic when, all of a sudden, my RAV4 stalled. A warning chime sounded and the battery light, check engine light, and power steering light all illuminated. In the 4.2 inch screen in the gauge cluster, the following message displayed: "Steering Power Low"..."Shift to P". A second message displayed and said: "Engine Stopped"..."Shift to P". I attempted to restart the vehicle up to 8 times and it finally restarted. I quickly drove the car to the shoulder and out of the way of traffic. There were three of us in the car (myself and my two kids) and we almost got hit two times because visibility was poor due to rainy conditions and mist from passing cars. Throughout all this, I had the Auto Start/Stop feature disabled, so the car should not have shut off on its own. We had to get the car towed because we were worried that the problem would reoccur. We hope the problem could be rectified by our local Toyota dealer, because we do not want to drive it again in fear of the problem reoccurring while on the roadway. We are reporting this to bring awareness to this issue, and to make sure nobody else will have to face this situation and potentially be put in harm's way. (The attached photo is a general picture from somebody else, but my car had the same EXACT warning lights and messages. We could not take a picture because we were focusing on trying to get the car to turn on and move it to the shoulder by any means possible).
Toyota (and Toyota of Boardman) is purposely overstating fuel capacity on their vehicles. So this is unsafe as drivers don’t the actual amount of gas before the run out and could lead to unexpected stops. This makes it impossible to determine the actual amount of gasoline used, which would also then make it impossible to know the total amount of air pollutants their cars omit. This could easily mean that Toyota is over stating their EPA estimated miles per gallon, the document attach shows that Toyota is aware that their gas tanks have known engineering defects however, they will only address the issue if a user owns a 2019 through 2021 model (RAV4 Hybrid). Also, they said they will only address the problem if the person cannot put more than 9.8 gallons that would mean that they will only address this issue if over 32% of the gas tank is unusable. If I would of known the truth I would have reconsidered buying my 2022 Toyota RAV4 XSE Hybrid.
At 2:05 pm on March 21, 2023 my car suddenly lurched forward and to the left as I was pulling into a parallel parking place. The vehicle was operating in electric mode on "ECO" with the the gearshift in "D" at the time, but I heard the starter motor kick in and the engine rev up simultaneous with the sudden lurching. The lurching was so fast that it threw my head against the head rest. The vehicle jumped an 8 inch concrete curb leaving a skid mark on the right side and traveled 10-12 feet across a side walk and into dirt landscaping. Upon slamming on the brake, the car came to rest and the engine died. There were no prior incidents. The odometer read 4648 at time of incident. The vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer or police. No injury to the driver or pedestrians occurred. The incident has not recurred since yesterday's incident. After the incident, the tire pressure indicator light appeared on the dashboard. The weather at time of the incident was 72 degrees and cloudy. The vehicle had just completed a short 1 mile drive at low speed. There were no electrical transformers nearby but a ReSound GN hearing aid recharge battery case was sitting on the passenger seat at the time of the incident.
No incident occurred. Received Customer Notification . Not sure if this should be a recall and how big of a problem it could cause
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while rolling down the driver's side window, the window made an abnormal sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who removed plastic debris and tightened unknown screws on the driver's side door; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that it was a common failure in similar vehicles. The failure mileage was approximately 600.
Tire size:225 65/17 While driving the side of a brand new tire blew out. We had three passengers in the vehicle that could have been in danger if we were going at a greater speed. We took the new tire in and was told by the auto shop that it could not be repaired. We had to purchase a new one and I have the invoice. I try to resolve this with Firestone but according to them, the tire was not under warranty. The new tire only had 5000 miles and it is a tread of at least 60,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at undisclosed speeds and accelerating, the transmission momentarily shifted into 2nd gear and then into neutral(N), causing the vehicle to start coasting. The contact released and then depressed the accelerator pedal and instantaneously and the vehicle accelerated normally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the transmission fluid was checked but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
Audio system is dead
The moonroof glass shattered unexpectedly with no impact or previous damage while driving on the Highway. The vehicle is only 3 months old has not been involved in any accidents or incidents. If the interior moonroof shade was not closed the glass would have dropped all over the interior potentially harming myself and any other passengers in the vehicle.
The contact owned a 2022 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that when he was making a left turn at a light, he was involved in a front-end collision. No warning lights were illuminated. The air bags failed to deploy, and the contact stated that he required medical attention for a fractured sternum. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and was deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 2,800.
I just want it in writing that my windshield just randomly cracked. It was parked and nothing hit it and it just cracked.
I purchased the car last July. Up to December, the car performed fine. Starting in December when I used the car heater repeatedly due to subzero temperatures, I noticed a burning smell coming from the vents. I was afraid that the engine or car would catch fire. I called the Tansky Toyota dealership and was told to bring the car in. They checked the car and I was told the smell was identified as engine coating which is burning off and it may take up to 4-6 month for the smell to go away. When I asked about the effects of the burning smell on my health, the assigned service adviser told me that “if Toyota put it there, it is fine’. In February, the smell in the enclosed car cabin got so bad that I felt nauseous, my eyes were burning, and I had metallic after taste in my mouth. When I took my car to the Tansky dealership, I was told that what I am smelling is a new car smell. Just to prove it, the assigned service advisor asked random dealership employees to sit in my car and to confirm that the car has a so called “new car smell”. When I asked if they could do something about the smell I was told to take the car to an independent car shop. The dealership was dismissive of my concerns. I had new cars before and none of them produced the so called “new car smell” when I used the heater. I contacted Toyota and requested an independent inspection. The inspection was scheduled at the same dealership and when I received the report, it basically said that the inspector could not duplicate the problem so my concern was dismissed. Unfortunately, during independent inspection, my car was not tested in subzero temperature to replicate the problem. My main concern is the effect of the burning chemicals on my health and possibly ability to operate the car safely. No one was able to tell me what kind of chemicals are in the engine coating. At the time of purchase, I was not told that the car has engine coating which will gradually burn off via heater vent into the cabin.
Above checked ADAS items don't work appropriately, and can't relay on them all the time. Apart from that My Toyota RAV4 Moon Roof shield couldn't be able to withstand for the wind during raining when the vehicle speed was at 75mph on Highway i-35 in Oklahoma. The glass busted completely, and those glass particles causes inconvenience to the other vehicle on the high way. I reported this incident to the car dealer but they were so rude to me, and said that car is not designed for the 75mph speed. Ended up convincing myself that RAV4 is not safe to drive anymore.
