MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAS A DEFECTIVE SENSOR FOR THE VSC, BRAKE SYSTEM. I SEE WHERE THE 2003 SEQUOIA IS COVERED, BUT NOT THE 2002'S. PLEASE TELL ME WHY THIS IS THE CASE, WHEN THE SAME PROBLEM IS OCCURRING. *TR
02 SEQUOIA -SUN AT 6PM DRIVING AT 75 MPH ON I 75 WHEN VEHICLE SUDDENLY SLOWED DOWN THEN BRAKES STARTED SCREECHING LOUDLY RATTLING.. VEHICLE STARTED TO VEER LEFT AND JERK. SKID LIGHT CAME ON WITH BEEPING SOUND. TRAC OFF AND VSC LIGHTS ALSO CAME ON. I PUT MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON IMMEDIATELY HELD THE STEERING WHEEL TIGHTLY AND EXITED THE HIGHWAY. ONCE IT WAS SAFE TO STOP I DID SO AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. THEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE UP AGAIN AND STARTED DRIVING AT 35MPH. THE LIGHTS WERE OFF AT THIS POINT. IN A FEW MINUTES THEY CAME BACK ON AND THE EVENTS STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE TIRE SHOP FOR THEM TO CHECK THE NEXT DAY. THEY SAID TIRES WERE FINE. THEN TOOK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTIC, THEY SAID ISSUE WAS A YAW RATE SENSOR. ADVISED THEM THAT WEB HAD A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME INCIDENT. ASKED IF THEY WOULD CONSIDER IN PRICING. THEY ONLY GAVE ME A 10% DISCOUNT. ALSO CALLED CORPORATE THEY TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WAS WAY PAST WARRANTY AND THEY COULD NOT HELP. PAID $1K TO HAVE IT REPLACED. *TR
TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM IS SPONTANEOUSLY ENGAGING CAUSING SUDDEN DECELERATION AND MOMENTARY LOSS OF CONTROL. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE GRINDING/CLASHING NOISE TYPICAL OF TRACTION-CONTROL ENGAGEMENT, BEEPING FROM DASH (INDICATING SYSTEM ERROR OR DISENGAGEMENT?), AND "TRAC OFF" AND "VSC TRAC" LIGHTS COME ON AND STAY ON. ORIGINALLY PROBLEM ONLY OCCURRED AFTER AN HOUR OR MORE OF HIGHWAY SPEED DRIVING, USUALLY WITH CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVE. RECENTLY STARTED OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY AND AT LOWER SPEEDS. ALSO NOTICE VIBRATION DURING BRAKING (SIMILAR TO WARPED ROTORS) GOES AWAY WHEN TRACTION CONTROL IS OFF. *TR
2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA LIMITED VSC OFF/VSC TRAC PROBLEM. LIGHTS GO ON W/CLICKING AND BRAKES GRIND AND LOCK UP. THIS HAS HAPPENED 4 TIMES. I WAS ALMOST IN A ACCIDENT AND WAS, FORTUNATELY ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE STOP. IT IS AS IF I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS HUGE VEHICLE. I HAVE IT IN THE DEALER NOW AWAITING REPAIR ESTIMATE AND DIAGNOSIS OF PROBLEM. I'VE BEEN FOREWARNED IT WILL BE VERY EXPENSIVE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO FIX THIS ISSUE. *TR
WHILE GETTING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AT TOYOTA OF WALLINGFORD INCT I WAS SHOWN FRAME ROT NEAR THE REAR STRUT AND OTHER DECLINING AREAS OF RUST/ ROT. IT IS ON RECORD AND A CALL WAS MADE TO TOYOTA WHICH NOTHING WAS DONE AS FAR AS RECALLS GO. THE TUNDRA WHICH HAS THE SAME FRAME HAS BEEN RECALLED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NOTICED THAT THE BOTTOM OF VEHICLE WAS SEVERELY RUSTED. IN ADDITION, THE INNER LINE OF THE DOORS WAS BEGINNING TO EXHIBIT RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY A DEALER NOR WAS IT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT HIS WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 94,000.
2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA VSC TRACTION CONTROL. ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ENGAGES SUDDENLY WITH POWER LOSS AND FRONT END VIBRATION. VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS ILLUMINATE ON DASH. ABS AND VSC LIGHTS REMAIN ON (ABS AND STABILITY CONTROL THEREFORE DISENGAGED) AND CANNOT BE TURNED BACK ON BY OPERATOR. WHEN VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF, SYSTEM APPEARS TO RESET, BUT THE PROBLEM REPEATS AFTER RESTARTING AND DRIVING SEVERAL MILES. PROBLEM IS OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY AND APPEARS THERE ARE MANY OTHER FOLKS HAVING THIS PROBLEM. *TR
WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING AN ISSUE W/ THE VEHICLE SKID CONTROL LIGHT KEEPS GOING ON AND OFF. AT ONE POINT, WE LOST POWER TO CAR, WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IS UNSURE WHAT THE ISSUE IS. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR OVER A YEAR. I FOUND A RECALL RELATED TO VSC FOR 2003 SEQUOIAS BUT TOYOTA SAYS OUR SEQUOIA IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL EVEN THOUGH THE SYMPTOMS ARE VERY IDENTICAL!! INSTEAD THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WANTS TO TRY TO REPLACE SOME COMPUTER CHIP (THAT WOULD COST US THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS) BUT THEY ARE NOT GUARANTEEING THAT THIS IS EVEN THE CAUSE OR WILL RESOLVE THE ISSUE!!! THEY ARE SAYING IT CAN BE THIS COMPUTER OR IT CAN BE THAT COMPUTER .. AND REPLACING EACH IS WORTH A FEW 1000S BUT THEY DON'T KNOW WHICH IS CAUSING THE VSC LIGHT TO GO ON AND OFF!! *TR
I HAVE OWNED MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SINCE JANUARY OF 2002. SINCE THEN WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES AND NOW THE VSC/ABS SKID CONTROL. FOR STARTERS THE FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS HAD TO BE CHANGED AND RE-SURFACED WITH APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THEN THE SAME THING AGAIN WITH APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES. BEFORE THE SECOND REPAIR I DID SOME RESEARCH AND SAW THERE WAS A TSB FOR LARGER CALIPERS AND ROTORS ON THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A CLASSIC CASE OF COST CUTTING AND UNDER-ENGINEERING TO INCREASE PROFIT MARGINS. I WENT TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND ASK FOR THE REPAIR TO BE DONE BY TOYOTA AT THEIR EXPENSE. THEY WOULD NOT DO THIS FOR ME. NOW WITH APPROXIMATELY 99,000 MILES ON THE CAR I HAVE A FAILURE OF THE VSC/ABS SKID CONTROL. THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR. I WANT TOYOTA TO FINALLY OWN UP TO MY SITUATION. THE VSC/ABS PROBLEM IS VERY FREQUENT AMONG MY YEAR MODEL AND DESERVES A RECALL. ONCE THIS SYSTEM IS DE-ACTIVATED BY FAILURE THE SEQUOIA BECOMES LESS MANUVERABLE AND MORE DANGEROUS TO ITS OCCUPANTS AND ALL THOSE CARS IT SHARES THE ROAD WITH. PLEASE JOIN ME AND DO WHAT YOU CAN TO MAKE TOYOTA MAKE BOTH THE UNDERPOWERED ROTORS AND CALIPERS AND THE ABS SKID CONTROL SYSTEM MANDATORY RECALL ITEMS FOR THE 02 SEQUOIA. *TR
PROBLEM BEGAN IN 2009 WHEN THE VSC LOCKED UP ON MY HUSBAND WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. THIS INCIDENT WAS REPORTED TO YOU AND A COMPLAINT FILED. WHEN VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF ESCONDIDO, WE WERE TOLD IT CHECKED OUT FINE. THE LIGHT CONTINUED TO COME ON AN OFF..TAKEN IN AGAIN, THEY PULLED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM AND FOUND IT REGISTERED THE CAR HAD A TOTAL ROLLOVER..SO NOT THE CASE! TOYOTA HAD NO ANSWER, SAYING MAYBE COMPUTER MALFUNCTION..THEY DID NOTHING! OVER THE YEAR THE LIGHT HAS COME ON AND OFF RANDOMLY, WHEN TAKEN IN FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE, WE HAVE BEEN TOLD IT "CHECKS OUT FINE". ON 12/22/2010 I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AND NOTICED A FEELING OF TOTAL TIGHTNESS OVER THE VEHICLE. THE VSC LIGHT WAS ON. WHEN PUT IN DRIVE (I HAD BEEN IN REVERSE) THE CAR WAS FINE AND THE FEELING GONE..LIGHT AS WELL. ONE HOUR LATER, I WAS AT A STOPLIGHT IN HEAVY HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. AS THE LINE BEGAN TO SLOWLY MOVER FORWARD, I LIGHTLY TOUCHED THE GAS..IMMEDIATELY THE CAR WAS OVERCOME WITH THE TIGHT FEELING AND LIGHTS CAME ON AND A DEEP GRINDING NOISE STARTED. I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS PUSHING FORWARD AND COULD NOT STEER..I LOOKED DOWN THINKING I WAS ON THE GAS..MY FOOT WAS 100% ON THE BRAKE..ALL THE WAY DOWN AND THE CAR WAS PUSHING FORWARD! I LOOKED UP AND WATCHED AS MY HUGE SEQUOIA CRUMPLED UP INTO MY WINDSHIELD..THEN THE CAR SHUT DOWN. THE CAR IN FRONT OF MY HAD LITTLE (POPPING NOISE IN TRUNK) TO NO DAMAGE! AIRBAGS NEVER EJECTED. TOWED AND INCOPERABLE AT THE TIME. CURRENTLY BEING INVESTIGATED FOR DAMAGE BY INSURANCE AND TOYOTA. *TR
I HAVE OWNED A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SINCE 2006. THIS PROBLEM BEGAN OCCURRING IN THE WINTER OF 2007 WITH THE VSC, VSC TRAC, AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS ALL COMING ON. THIS KEPT CONTINUING ANYTIME I WAS DRIVING IN WET SNOWY CONDITIONS. I BEGAN TO RESEARCH THIS PROBLEM ON LINE AND IT SEEMS THERE ARE MANY CASES OF THIS ON 2001-2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIAS. I TOOK IT TO A DEALER AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANY COMPUTER CODES RELATING TO THIS ISSUE. AT THE END OF LAST WINTER THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO BECOME WORSE. EVEN IN DRY CONDITIONS ON DRY PAVEMENT THE VSC COMPUTER BEGINS TO TAKE OVER ACCELERATION AND VERY OFTEN! AND SOMETIMES THE LIGHTS COME ON AND SOMETIMES NOT. AGAIN I RESEARCHED AND FOUND THERE TO BE A TOYOTA RECALL ON 2003 SEQUOIAS ONLY FOR THE SAME PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN AFFECTING MY SEQUOIA! I CALLED TOYOTA, THEY GAVE ME A CASE # AND TOLD ME TO TAKE IT IN TO THE DEALER. I TOOK IT BACK TO A TOYOTA DEALER AND AGAIN THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE LIGHTS TURNING ON OR FIND ANY COMPUTER CODES CONCERNING THE PROBLEM. THAT WAS APPROXIMATELY 5 MONTHS AGO AND STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTS LEADING UP TO YESTERDAYS ACCIDENT. I DROVE UP TO THE MOUNTAINS TO GO SNOWBOARDING. WHEN WE LEFT THE RESORT IT WAS SNOWING VERY HEAVY. I NOTICED THE ABS, VSC, AND VSC TRAC LIGHTS COME ON AGAIN, AS I WAS EXPECTING THEM TO. WE DROVE ABOUT 7 MILES DOWN THE ROAD THEN I WAS MOVING IN TO THE LEFT TURNING LANE OF A TRAFFIC LIGHT. OUR SPEED WAS ONLY 15-20 MPH, AND WHEN I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN THE WHEELS LOCKED UP AND WE BEGAN SLIDING. I LET OFF THE BRAKES AND TRIED THEM AGAIN TO NO AVAIL. I LET OFF THE BRAKES AND TRIED TO MISS THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME BY GOING TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THEM OVER A SMALL MEDIAN AS THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC COMING TOWARDS US IN THE INTERSECTION. BUT MY REAR TIRE BOUNCED ME OFF THE MEDIAN AND INTO THE VEHICLE.THE DAMAGE WAS MINOR AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. I BELIEVE THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE ABS AND VSC SYSTEM WAS WORKING PROPERLY. I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD INCLUDE 01 AND 02 SEQUOIAS. *TR
FRAME RUST THROUGH, 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH ALONG THE BOTTOM DIRECTLY BELOW WHERE THE FRONT LEFT SUPPORT MOUNT IS ATTACHED. THE OPENING AS A RESULT OF THIS RUSTING IS LARGE ENOUGH TO PUT AT LEAST THREE FINGERS THROUGH. THE RUST THROUGH THEN EXTENDS BACK TO BELOW WHERE THE FRONT FRAME CROSS MEMBER IS ATTACHED. THIS WAS FIRST OBSERVED NOVEMBER15, 2010. IT IS BELIEVED THIS IS THE SAME AS THE FRAME WHICH IS USED ON THE TOYOTA TUNDRA FOR WHICH A REPLACEMENT PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN EFFECT. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN CONNECTICUT WHERE IT WAS DRIVEN FOR ITS FIRST SIX AND ONE HALF YEARS. THE REMAINING TIME HAVING BEEN IN OHIO. WE NOW HAVE A QUESTIONABLY SAFE VEHICLE FOR WHICH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TELLS US NOTHING CAN BE DONE. *TR
NOTICED PROBLEM WITH VEHICLE TRACTION WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEED IN WET OR SNOWY WEATHER. PROBLEM WITH ACCELERATION AND TRACTION WHEN ACCELERATING. HEARD A RATCHETING SOUND AND NO TRACTION WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOPPED POSITION ON A WET ROAD. AFTER SOME RESEARCH IT SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR TO EARLIER RECALL WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID: 10V17600 FOR TOYOTA SEQUOIA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN APRIL 1, 2002 THROUGH APRIL 17, 2003. CALLED TOYOTA SERVICE LINE ON 11/9/2010 AND THEY INFORMED US THAT THIS RECALL DOESN'T APPLY TO OUR VEHICLE SINCE OUR VEHICLE WAS APPARENTLY MANUFACTURED ON 3/8/2002 (A FEW WEEKS EARLIER THAN THE RECALL COVERS). WE LIVE IN A VERY DRY CLIMATE WITH VERY LITTLE TO NO PRECIPITATION BUT NOTICED IT AGAIN AFTER RAINFALL. FILED A CASE# [XXX]ON 12/10/13 WITH TOYOTA WITH NO RESPONSE. PLEASE HELP! I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND RECENTLY MY VSC HAS BEEN WAS FEELS LIKE A LOCK UP, I HEAR SOMETHING GRINDING AND THE CAR BEGINS TO SHAKE AND SWERVE, IT HAPPENED AS I WAS ENTERING THE INTERSTATE. I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE VSC LIGHT GOING ON AND OFF AND DID MENTION TO THE SERVICE DEPT. AT THE DEALERSHIP WHEN IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. IT HAS BEEN A FEW YEARS SINCE THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED AND NOW IT IS WORSE AND A VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. I HAD MY DAUGHTER AND A HER FRIEND IN THE CAR AND WE WERE NOWHERE NEAR A TOWN. I AM VERY SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR. IT NOW HAPPENS ALMOST EVERYTIME I GO SOMEWHERE, AND THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE ME JUST TO EVALUATE THE PROBLEM WHEN I HAD PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED IT BEFORE. DURING MY ANNUAL NYS VEHICLE INSPECTION, 11/6/2010, I WAS NOTIFIED BY THE MECHANIC THAT HE WOULD BE UNABLE TO PASS ON INSPECTION MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA DUE TO A SIZABLE HOLE RUSTED THROUGH THE FRAME. BASED ON MY REVIEW OF INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET, THIS IS NOT AN UNKNOWN ISSUE WITH THE SEQUOIA. THE SEQUOIA AND THE TUNDRA ARE BUILT ON THE SAME FRAME AND TOYOTA IS REPLACING FRAMES ON TOYOTA TUNDRA PICKUP TRUCKS THAT EXHIBIT THIS DEFECT. APPARENTLY, THIS IS AN ACKNOWLEDGED DEFECT IN THE TOYOTA TUNDRA, BASED ON A RECALL NOTICE DATED MAY, 2010 FOR THE TUNDRA FOR YEARS 2000 TO 2003. HOWEVER, I DON'T FIND ANYTHING PERTAINING TO THE 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, WHICH IS THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION, ALTHOUGH IT IS BUILT ON THE SAME FRAME AS THE TOYOTA TUNDRA, WHICH SHOULD BE SIMILARLY TREATED. AS AN ADDITIONAL FACT, THIS SEQUOIA ISSUE HAS BEEN TAKEN UP BY TV STATIONS IN BOSTON, AND THE MASSACHUSETTS ATTORNEY GENERAL HAS ALSO BEEN INVOLVED IN RESOLUTION OF A SEQUOIA COMPLAINT. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED DEFECT FOR THE SEQUOIA AND IS APPARENTLY A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE FOR TOYOTA. *TR
INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE FAILURE - ONLY METHOD OF EXITING VEHICLE. FAILED FOR A THIRD TIME UNDER NORMAL USE BEFORE REPORTING TO NHTSA. IF VEHICLE IS IN A CRASH, ON FIRE, OR UNDER WATER, A PERSON WILL PANIC AND EXERT GREATER FORCE THAN NORMAL ON THE HANDLE, SNAPPING IT, LEADING TO POTENTIAL DEATH. DEALER TOLD ME THEY HAVE "HUNDREDS" OF THESE COME THROUGH. ASK TOYOTA HOW MANY THEY HAVE REPLACED TO GET ACTUAL SCOPE. THEY HAVE NO INCENTIVE TO CORRECT FAILURE SINCE DEALER MAKES $250.00 TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. NO EGRESS IN A BURNING CAR IS EQUIVALENT TO NO FIRE EXIT DOORS IN A BURNING BUILDING. *TR
VSC/ABS/SKID LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY, AT DIFFERING SPEEDS, AT RANDOM INTERVALS, ACCOMPANIED BY GRINDING NOISE AND BRAKING ACTION. DURING SOME OF THESE RANDOM OCCURRENCES, ESPECIALLY WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE ACTION CAN PULL THE CAR QUICKLY AND FORCEFULLY TO THE RIGHT AND ON A FEW OCCASIONS THIS HAS ALMOST RESULTED IN LOSS OF CONTROL. I READ ON EDMUNDS.COM AND OTHER SITES (INCLUDING HTTP://WWW.TUNDRASOLUTIONS.COM/FORUMS/1GEN-SEQUOIA/76829-FILE-COMPLAINT-NHTSA-REGARDING-VSC-ABS/) THAT THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN, AND WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM! WHY HAVEN'T YOU MANDATED A RECALL FOR THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION????!!! I'M CONCERNED THAT MY WIFE MAY BE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AND THE PROBLEM WILL SUDDENLY AND VIOLENTLY PULL THE CAR TO THE RIGHT, AND SHE WILL HIT ANOTHER CAR OR LOSE CONTROL AND CRASH. HOW MANY CRASHES, INJURIES, AND, HEAVEN FORBID, DEATHS, WILL HAVE TO HAPPEN BEFORE YOU ACT? *TR
MY VEHICLE SKID CONTROL (VSC) ACTIVATES AUTOMATICALLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVING NORMAL AND THERE IS NO REASON FOR THE VSC TO ENGAGE. THIS HAS HAPPEN ON VARIOUS OCCASIONS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE YAW RATE AND STEERING ANGLE SENSOR AND IT COST $1,236 TO REPAIR. *TR
THIS IS A REPEAT OCCURRENCE OF A PROBLEM WITH THE VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF SYSTEMS. REPEATEDLY, THE LIGHTS WILL COME ON AND REMAINS ON UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS RESTARTED. AGAIN, WHEN I TOOK IT THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT, I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE CODES. NO RESOLUTION. *TR
I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 02' SEQUOIA. AT FIRST THE VSC TRAC LIGHT/ VSC OFF WOULD COME ON & GO OFF AFTER TURNING ENGINE OFF. THEN IT STARTED STAYING ON ALONG W/ ABS LIGHT & BRAKE. ALL THE LIGHTS CONTINUE TO STAY ON. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 126,800 MILES WHICH I CONSIDER LESS TO BE HAVING AN ISSUE AT THIS TIME. TO START, I WANT TO STRESS THAT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE VSC TRAC, ABS, SKID CONTROL AND BRAKE LIGHTS ALL CAME ON AND STAYED ON AS OF THE ABOVE DATE. PRIOR TO THAT DATE, THE VSC TRAC AND SKID LIGHTS WOULD COME ON FOR NO REASON, BUT WOULD GO OFF UPON TURNING OFF AND RESTARTING THE CAR. WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND STAYED ON, I READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL AND BASED ON THAT INFORMATION, WAS WORRIED THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK, SO I CALLED THE DEALER. WHEN I SPOKE TO SOMEONE IN THE DEALER'S REPAIR SHOP ABOUT THE PROBLEM BEFORE I BROUGHT THE CAR IN, HE SAID THAT THE WARNING LIGHTS MEANT THAT MY ABS SYSTEM WAS GONE AND IT WOULD COST $2,000 TO FIX. HE SAID THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY OR A RECALL. SO, I TOOK IT TO THE NEAREST AUTO REPAIR SHOP TO MY HOME, THAT I HAD USED PREVIOUSLY. THEY CHECKED THE WARNING LIGHTS WITH THE COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THEN, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, AND THEY CHECKED THE WARNING LIGHTS AND SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS LOW VOLTAGE WITH THE BATTERY. I HAD RECENTLY BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY, SO I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE FIRST PLACE, WHICH CHECKED THE BATTERY AND SAID IT WAS FINE. SO I RECEIVED CONFLICTING MESSAGES FROM THE DEALER. HOWEVER, SINCE OTHER OWNERS WITH MY YEAR/MODEL TOYOTA HAVE HAD SAFETY PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND TOYOTA HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE 2003 MODEL AND THEY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL, I BELIEVE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE 2002 YEAR. SINCE END OF JUNE 2010, I HAD TO HAVE MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA TOWED BECAUSE IT HAD STARTED TO VEER OFF AND THE WHEEL BECAME STIFF AND I COULDN'T CONTROL THE STEERING. THE VSC LIGHTS CAME ON AS WELL AS THE "SQUIGGLY CAR" LIGHT. I WAS SCARED TO DRIVE IT AGAIN AS I WAS 100 MILES AWAY FROM HOME, SO I HAD IT TOWED. I HAD TAKEN IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE BEARINGS BUT COULDN'T DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE I HAD FELT AS FAR AS THE VSC INCIDENT. THEY CHARGED ME FOR INSPECTION BUT SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG AND SENT ME HOME WITH THE CAR. I EXPERIENCED THIS FOR A FEW DAYS AND FINALLY TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR. THEY DID A ZERO RECALIBRATING AND SAW THERE WAS ISSUES ON THE COMPUTER COMING UP BUT COULDN'T ALSO EXACTLY PINPOINT WHAT WAS WRONG. IT TOOK A WEEK BEFORE I GOT IT BACK AS IT DIDN'T REOCCUR WITH THEM. THE FOLLOWING DAY AS I DROVE IT, THE VSC LIGHTS AND SQUIGGLY CAR LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. EVERY TIME I MADE A TURN IT SEEMED IT JUMPED AND IT WOULDN'T GAIN ACCELERATION QUICKLY WHEN I PRESSED ON THE GAS. PLUS IT MADE THIS LOUD NOISE AS IF SOMETHING WAS RUBBING AND IT WOULD SLOW DOWN , THEN AFTER A FEW SECONDS, REGAIN SPEED. I TOOK IT IN AGAIN AND THEY REPLACED THE YAW SENSOR. THE FOLLOWING DAY, AGAIN TAKING THE STREETS IT SEEMED THAT EVERYTIME I STOPPED AND PRESSED AGAIN IT SHIFTED SOMETHING AS I FELT IT UNDER THE PEDALS, THE VSC LIGHTS WOULD TURN ON BUT THEN TURN OFF AND THEN FINALLY REGAIN SPEED. EACH AND EVERY TIME I WAS STOPPED AT A LIGHT AND THEN PRESSED ON THE GAS, IT DID THIS. I FINALLY LOOKED UP A RECALL THAT ONE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME ABOUT AND NOTICED THE 2003 RECALL FOR TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM. WHILE DRIVING THROUGH PARKING LOT AND APPLYING BRAKES, THE VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS CAME ON AND REMAINED ON WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS ON. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, THE LIGHTS WOULD NOT REPLICATE. WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER, THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME TO BRING IT IN WHEN THE LIGHTS WERE ON BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO PULL THE CODES. *TR
ON 6/21/2010, MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SRS 2-WHEEL DRIVE MODEL AT 74K MILES HAD FAILURE WITH ITS AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WHILE RUNNING ON HIGHWAY. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REPEATEDLY FAILED TO PROPERLY ENGAGE THE OVERDRIVE GEARS, RESULTED IN SIGNIFICANT DROPPING OF ENGINE RPM, CAUSED SUDDEN DROP OF VEHICLE SPEED, CAUSED VEHICLE VIBRATION AND LOUD CLANKING SOUNDS, AND RESULTED IN DIFFICULT DRIVING CONDITION. THIS WAS PARTIALLY CORRECTABLE ONLY BY TAKING THE VEHICLE OFF THE OVERDRIVE MODE. ALTHOUGH NO VEHICLE ACCIDENT NOR INJURY RESULTED FROM THIS MECHANICAL FAILURE, I NOTED THAT MANY DISCUSSION BOARDS LISTED THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR 2000-2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND TUNDRA. THE PROBLEM WAS ATTRIBUTED TO OD PLANETARY GEARS AND SUN GEAR IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THIS PATTERN OF DEFECT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED WITH THE MANUFACTURE TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER POTENTIAL DANGEROUS INCIDENTS. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL BUT WAS ADVISED THERE IS NOT. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY ISSUES,UNTIL THIS PAST WEEKEND, OTHER THAN NOT REALIZING I HAD ENGAGED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE SINCE THE LIGHT CONSTANTLY STAYS ON. I NEARLY WRECKED THIS WEEKEND. IT WAS DARK AND RAINING. I HAD TO APPLY THE BRAKES TO MISS ANOTHER CAR, THE BRAKES LOCKED UP AND STARTED SLIDING OUT OF CONTROL. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STOPPED IN TIME TO AVOID ANOTHER ACCIDENT. MY TRACTION CONTROL DOESN'T WORK EITHER, I GUESS IT WENT OUT WHEN ALL THE OTHER CONTROL LIGHTS WENT OUT. I JUST WONDER IF THE AIRBAGS WORK, HOPE I DON'T HAVE TO FIND OUT THE HARD WAY. I KEEP READING NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE 2002 MODEL BUT HAVEN'T SEEN A RECALL. APPEARS THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2003 MODEL FOR THE SAME ISSUES. MY STEERING COLUMN IS BROKEN. I HAD IT CHECKED OUT SEVERAL YEARS AGO. APPARENTLY THE MAIN METAL COMPONENT IS BROKEN AND THEREFORE MY GEARS ENGAGEMENT DOESN'T LIGHT UP WHEN I AM IN DRIVE. IF SOMEONE ELSE DRIVES MY CAR, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT GEAR IT'S IN. I READY MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME BUT NO RECALL. MY REAR HATCH HANDLE HAS BROKEN 2 TIMES NOW WITHIN A YEAR OF THE OTHER WHICH COSTS ME $100 TO REPAIR EACH TIME. IT APPEARS TO BE CHEAPLY MADE AND PLASTIC AND IT CAN'T BE REPAIRED WITHOUT A LOT OF LABOR TO DISMANTLE THE REAR DOOR PLATE ON THE INSIDE TO INSTALL A NEW HANDLE. HELLO, I'M IN THE MILITARY AND MY WIFE AND KIDS WERE DRIVING IN OUR 2002 SEQUOIA 4X4, SHE CALLED ME AT WORK CRYING AND SAID THAT HER AND THE KIDS HAD ALMOST HIT A 18 WHEELER HEAD ON. SHE SAID SHE WAS GOING AROUND A TURN AND THE TRUCK JERKED HER INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC, SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES HARD, AND PULLED THE TRUCK BACK INTO FLOW OF TRAFFIC. SHE PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND I HAD IT TOWED HOME. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET FOR THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE. ALMOST VERBATIM OF MY SAME ISSUE. AFTER THAT THE VSC, OR VEHICLE SKID CONTROL LIGHT FLASHES, AND IT CAUSES MY TRUCK TO BRAKE ONE WHEEL AT A TIME. IT ALSO WILL NOT ALLOW US TO ACCELERATE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER YESTERDAY AND THEY CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THE ECU WAS BAD AND THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL AND YEAR OF TRUCK, WHICH IS VISIBLE ON THE INTERNET. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THE PART IS $650 DOLLARS, AND THE LABOR IS CLOSE TO $250. COULD YOU PLEASE ASSIST, I GETTING READY TO DEPLOY TO IRAQ AGAIN. ABOUT A YEAR AGO, I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS THAT'S RELATED TO THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL (VSC) SYSTEM ON MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE PROBLEM OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY AND WHEN IT DOES OCCURS, IT HAPPENS DURING INITIAL ACCELERATION. DURING THIS TIME, THE VSC LIGHT WOULD START BLINKING AND I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ACCELERATE. BRAKING WOULD REQUIRE TREMENDOUS FORCE APPLIED TO ACTIVATE IT. THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE INCIDENT WHERE THE VSC ACTIVATED DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING, BUT THAT INCIDENT LASTED APPROXIMATELY 5 OR SO SECONDS. HOWEVER, IT DID REQUIRE THAT I SUDDENLY APPLY THE BRAKE AND STARTED PUMPING IT FOR THE VSC TO DE-ACTIVATE. DUE TO THE INTERMITTENT NATURE, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP FOR DIAGNOSTIC AND THEY DID FIND THAT ERROR CODES WERE PRESENT RELATING TO THE VSC. THOUGH THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE PINPOINTED ON THE INITIAL VISIT TO THE REPAIR SHOP. SUBSEQUENT OCCURRENCES PROMPTED ME TO BRING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC. EVENTUALLY IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO ME TO REPLACE THE "SPEED SENSORS" WHICH I AUTHORIZED. AFTER THE REPLACEMENT, THE PROBLEM TEND TO HAVE GONE AWAY. RECENTLY, I STARTED TO INTERMITTENTLY EXPERIENCE A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH VSC LIGHT BLINKING BRIEFLY WHENEVER I PULL OUT OF A DRIVE WAY PERFORMING AT LEAST AN 80 DEGREE TURN. THIS TIME AROUND THE PROBLEM ISN'T AS SEVERE AND IS VERY INFREQUENT. I WOULD SAY IN A WEEK OF COMMUTING, I WOULD EXPERIENCE IT MAYBE ONCE OR TWICE. OF COURSE THIS IS COMPARED TO PREVIOUS INCIDENTS WHERE I WAS EXPERIENCING THE VSC PROBLEM ALMOST HALF THE TIME. EARLIER THIS WEEK, I READ THERE WAS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA RECALL WHICH HAS THE EXACT SYMPTOM AND PROBLEM I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING ON MY 2002 SEQUOIA. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALER AND $4000 LATER IT WAS REPAIRED: THE REPAIRS INCLUDED REPLACING THE ABS COMPUTER AND NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS....NOW ITS JUNE 2012 AND ITS DOING IT AGAIN BUT NOW IT ENGAGES RANDOMLY REGARDLESS OF SPEED OR TERRAIN... I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON MY VEHICLE AND HAVE FOUND OUT THAT TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A RECALL ON THE SAME PROBLEM BUT ONLY ON THE YEAR MODELS 2003-2005...I CALLED MY DEALER TO REPORT THE PROBLEM AND THEY CONFIRMED MY YEAR MODEL IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL... THE CONTACT SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND WHEN RESTARTING, THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AS A DEFECT IN THE YAW CENSOR THAT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
I WAS DRIVING MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA ON THE HIGHWAY IN CHICAGO AND MY VEHICLE COMPLETELY DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. MY BATTERY WAS BRAND NEW AND I HAD FULL POWER. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. TRIED TO DRIVE IT HOME THE NEXT DAY AND IT DIED ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH. HAD IT TOWED AGAIN TO OUR HOME TOWN AND TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP. MECHANIC STATED THAT THE RADIATOR FLUID LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION AND ALSO THAT THE DEBRIS FROM THE MECHANICAL PARTS OF THE TRANSMISSION WERE LAYING ON THE BOTTOM. HE STATED HE HAS SEEN THIS IN MANY TOYOTA SEQUOIAS AND THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED BUT HAS NOT.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 29,500. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 30,000.
