AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR ON TOYOTA SIENNA OFTEN DOES NOT CLOSE. EVEN WHEN ENCOURAGED "MANUALLY" TO CLOSE, IT PULLS BACK SEVERAL TIMES. IF AUTO FEATURE IS TURNED OFF, IT WON'T PULL CLOSED AT ALL. SLIDING DOOR ON LEFT SIDE WON'T OPEN FROM INSIDE. OCCASIONALLY LOCKS ITSELF SO THAT IT CAN'T BE OPENED FROM OUTSIDE EITHER, EVEN IF ALL OTHER DOORS ARE UNLOCKED. *TR
THE CARRIER, CABLE, MOUNT AND BOLTS HAVE SEVERELY RUSTED CAUSING THE MECHANISM TO BIND AND LOCK-UP. THE ENTIRE MECHANISM HAS NO CORROSION RESISTANCE AND IS EXPOSED TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND THUS IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO CORROSION AND SEVERE RUSTING. SPARE TIRE CARRIER JAMMED WHEN CHANGING A FLAT TIRE WITH SPARE MAKING REINSTALLING DIFFICULT. LOWERING OF SPARE TIRE WILL JAM PREVENTING REPLACEMENT OF A FLAT TIRE. *TR
OUTSIDE DOOR LATCH ON MANUAL SLIDING DOOR BROKE. INSIDE LATCH STILL WORKS. POWER SLIDING DOOR REFUSES TO OPEN. PRIOR TO FAILURE, IT WOULD TRY TO CLOSE SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE ACTUALLY LATCHING SHUT. NO RESPONSE FROM LOCAL DEALER. *TR
CORROSION ON THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER AND CABLE. CAUSES: 1) BINDING OF CABLE PREVENTING LOWERING OF SPARE TIRE 2) SLIPPING OF CARRIER AND CABLE; POSSIBLY CAUSING SUDDEN DROP; 3) WEAKENING OF CARRIER AND CABLE, AND 4) STICKING OF CARRIER AND CABLE CAUSING JAMMING PREVENTING SPARE TIRE FROM BEING LOWERED OR LOWERED IN A JERKING AND UNSAFE MANNER. 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA FWD, WITH SPARE TIRE CARRIER. *TR
DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING DOOR (NOT A POWER DOOR) WILL NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE. THE MECHANISM HAS FAILED. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH BOTH SLIDING DOORS (PASSENGER SIDE IS POWER DOOR) WITH THE LATCH MECHANISM GETTING STUCK. THIS TIME, IT IS COMPLETELY INOPERABLE. *TR
TOYOTA SIENNA DRIVER SIDE WINDOW VERTICAL SCRATCHES I HAVE PASS MULTIPLE SIENNA'S ON THE HIGHWAY THAT HAVE THE SAME SCRATCHES. *TR
WEST LAKE TIRE BLEW OUT WITH LESS THAN 100 MILES ON IT. *TR
MY WIFE WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE ON A SLIGHT INCLINE. WHEN SHE STOPPED AND TRIED TO PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE, THE GEARSHIFT BROKE. WE HAD THE VAN TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE METAL PARTS INTO WHICH THE GEAR SHAFT INSERTS HAD BROKEN CLEAN IN HALF. NEITHER THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP NOR THE MECHANIC HAD EVER SEEN THAT HAPPEN BEFORE THEY CLAIMED. NEVERTHELESS, TOYOTA DID NOT DEEM THIS TO BE A DEFECT AND WE HAD TO PAY CLOSE TO $800 TO HAVE IT FIXED. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON A STEEPER HILL OR HAD MY WIFE BEEN PULLING OUT INTO A BUSY STREET, AN ACCIDENT MOST DEFINITELY COULD HAVE OCCURRED. I HAVE KEPT THE PARTS WHICH I BELIEVE WERE FAULTY/DEFECTIVE. THE PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED WERE A TILT STEERING SUPPORT, A STEERING TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY, A SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY AND A TILT STEERING BOLT. *TR
I HAVE 2002 SIENNA. I HAVE POWER REAR DOOR PROBLEM.: THE DOOR WILL OPEN PROPERLY USING ANY OF THE "DOOR OPEN" BUTTONS BUT WILL NOT CLOSE--ALL I HEAR IS A CLICKING SOUND WHEN ANY OF THE BUTTONS ARE PUSHED AGAIN. I'M ASSUMING THAT THE RELAY TO "CLOSE" IS WORKING BUT THE MOTOR IS FOR WHATEVER REASON NOT RECEIVING THE INPUT. *TR
I HAD A 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE VAN WITH 106,000 MILES ON IT. IN MARCH 2009 MY SON WAS HIT BY ANOTHER DRIVER AND THE CAR WAS TOTALED. IT SUSTAINED EXTENSIVE FRONT AND REAR DAMAGE. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I AM CONCERNED THAT FRONT AND SIDE AIRBAGS MAY NOT DEPLOY IN OLDER CARS. I BOUGHT THE CAR BECAUSE IT HAD FRONT AND SIDE AIRBAGS, STABILITY CONTROL AND AN EXCELLENT SAFETY RATING. THE CAR WAS EXPERTLY AND CONSTANTLY MAINTAINED YET THE AIRBAGS DID NOT WORK WHEN NEEDED. *TR
WE ARE CURRENTLY HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE LOCKING SYSTEM OF OUR 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE (CURRENTLY 47,710 MILES); SPECIFICALLY THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR AND THE RIGHT SLIDING DOOR. THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR MALFUNCTIONED SOMETIME BACK IN EARLY MARCH 2009, WHEREBY THE DOORS WILL NOT FUNCTION VIA REMOTE OR ELECTRONIC MEANS. THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR IS ONLY FUNCTIONAL BY MANUALLY LOCKING OR UNLOCKING THE DOOR. ALSO, ABOUT A MONTH LATER, THE SLIDING DOOR STARTED ACTING UP. IN FACT, WE HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE ONE OF OUR PASSENGER'S FINGER WAS TRAPPED BY THE RIGHT SIDE SLIDING DOOR. THE SLIDING DOOR CLOSED AS THE PASSENGER WAS GETTING IN HER SEAT. MY WIFE HAD TO FORCE THE DOOR OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE TO FREE THE PASSENGER'S FINGERS. THANKFULLY, THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INJURIES. AS FOR THE RIGHT SLIDING DOOR, IT FAILED TO FUNCTION COMPLETELY ON AUGUST 10, 2009. CURRENTLY, THE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK AT ALL (ELECTRONICALLY OR MANUALLY). I FEAR THAT THESE MALFUNCTION PROBLEMS POSE A SIGNIFICANT RISK TO ME AND MY FAMILY. I HAVE A FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD AND HIS SAFETY IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE TO ME. WE CANNOT GET THE CAR REPAIRED DUE TO THE ENORMOUS COSTS IT WOULD TAKE JUST TO CORRECT THE DEFECT. IN FACT, BACK IN MARCH 18, 2009 WHEN ONLY THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WAS FAILING TO WORK, I INQUIRED HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST TO REPAIR THE DOOR AND THE REPRESENTATIVE STATED IT WOULD COST $100 JUST TO LOOK AT THE DOOR. *TR
2002 TOYOTA SIENNA 3RD ROW SEAT HAS FAULTY SEAT BELT. SEAT BELT WILL NOT RETRACT ON LEFT SIDE OF LAST SEAT. ONLY USED SPARINGLY, STUCK WILL NOT RETRACT. *TR
I HOPE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HELP ME OUT. MY SIENNA HAS 61022 MILEAGES ON IT AND WE BABY THIS CAR TO THE 'T'. ON FEBRUARY 11, 2008, I HAD JUST STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE FROM 'P' TO 'D' WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE. NO FORCE WAS USED AND WE ALWAYS PULL BACK THE SHIFTER AND CHANGE GEARS WITH MINIMAL FORCE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THE TECHNICIAN SHOWED ME WHERE THE ALUMINUM BRACKETS BROKE IN THREE PLACES. I WAS IN SHOCK THAT THE DESIGN AND MATERIAL WAS NOT MADE ENGINEERED TO LAST. THE TECHNICIAN SAID THAT THE MATERIAL IS MADE OF ALUMINUM AND HE JUST REPLACED ONE A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THIS IS NOT A SINGLE CASE. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THEIR SIENNA WORLDWIDE? NORMALLY, THE PART SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. I START TO WONDER IF THIS IS A DEFECT BECAUSE IT IS HAPPENING ON LOTS OF SIENNAS. ALSO THIS REPAIR IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. IT COST ME $834.69.00 US DOLLAR. (PARTS $166.16, LABOR $655.65) PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THIS IS COMMON AND IF TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE TAKE A FULL RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS KIND OF MATTER AND CONSIDER THIS AS A DEFECT. 2002 SIENNA DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR STOP WORKING. I TOOK IT TO DEALER AND THEY SAID IT IS A CABLE AND KNOWN ISSUE. *TR
BOUGHT A CERTIFIED USED 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE FROM A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN JULY 2007. WHILE INSPECTING IT, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING DOOR WAS ACTING UP. THEY TRIED TO FIX IT A COUPLE OF TIMES THEN VERBALLY ASKED ME TO BRING IT BACK WHEN THEY HAD THE RIGHT PARTS. 2 WEEKS LATER, I BROUGHT IT IN AT THEIR REQUEST AND THEY 'FIXED' IT. AFTER I LEFT THE SHOP I NOTICED IT WAS ACTING UP. I WAS MADE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THIS DOOR IS ACTING UP RIGHT NOW. *TR
1. TRUNK DOOR LATCH BROKEN 2. PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR COULD NOT CLOSE. NEED TO CHANGE TO MANUAL MODE. *TR
EVER SINCE NOVMBER, 2008, MY 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA PASSENGER SIDE POWER DOOR, HAS INTERMITTENTLY FAILED TO OPEN EITHER BY ACTIVATING THE BUTTON ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR COLUMN, BY PULLING THE DOOR HANDLE OUTSIDE, OR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DOOR BUTTON, OR WORSE, AFTER OPENING, WILL NOT CLOSE. THE DEALER HAD TO REINITIALIZE THE ECU IN NOVEMBER, 2008, AND HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS SINCE. NOW, SINCE AT LEAST DECEMBER, 2012, THE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT OPEN AT ALL BY ANY OF THE 3 METHODS AND CANNOT BE REINITIALIZED. ALSO, AT TIMES THE MANUAL DRIVERS SIDE PASSENGER DOOR, IN THE PAST ~ 1 1/2 YEARS WILL NOT OPEN EITHER FROM INSIDE DOOR BUTTON RELEASE OR OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE AND PASSENGERS HAVE TO CLIMB OVER FROM THE FRONT SEATS TO ENTER OR CLIMB OVER THE FRONT SEAT & CONSOLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER THAT I NEED TO "START WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ECU," A PART COSTING $730.00 AND ABOUT $1000 WITH INSTILLATION. I HAVE READ OTHER HORROR STORIES THAT REPLACING THE ECU ISN'T NECESSARILY THE ANSWER AND MANY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ANSWER IS. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY AUTO RECALLS ON THESE POWER DOOR MECHANISMS YET? I SEE A LARGE VOLUME OF THE EXACT SAME COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET FOR THESE SIENNA AS WELL AS WITHIN THE NHTSA DATABASE. IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY EVACUATION OF THE VEHICLES' PASSENGERS, AS IT STANDS, A CATASTROPHE IS WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR
WHILE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN INTERSECTION, CAR ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO ANOTHER. *TR
'02 TOYOTA SIENNA, ACCELERATED INTO AN INTERSECTION, CAUSING GRAVE INJURIES TO OTHER DRIVER. TOYOTA DRIVER DOES NOT RECALL THE ACCIDENT. *JB
POWER DOOR FAILING TO OPEN AND CLOSE PROPERLY. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE WE PURCHASED THE VAN IN 2004. THE DOORS WOULD SOME TIMES NOT OPEN UNDER POWER OR WOULD NOT CLOSE UNDER POWER. WE HAD TO MANUALLY CLOSE/OPEN THE DOOR. THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR NOW WILL NOT CLOSE UNDER POWER. WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT, WE TOOK THE VAN TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET THE REPAIR RUNS IN THE $1500-$1800 RANGE. *TR
DRIVERS SIDE SLIDING DOOR (POWER) WILL NO LONGER WORK EXCEPT MANUALLY. AN ANNUNCIATOR ON THE DASH INDICATE "PWR DOOR" IN RED. *TR
OUR 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA AUTOMATIC LOCK SYSTEM STARTED SPONTANEOUSLY LOCKING AND UNLOCKING ITSELF. IT WILL DO THIS WHILE IT IS PARKED OR WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. IT MAY DO IT ONCE OR TWICE, OR REPEATEDLY LOCK AND UNLOCK 15 TIMES OR MORE, EVEN DURING A SHORT COMMUTE. IT OCCURS RANDOMLY, SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY, AND SOMETIMES NOT FOR SEVERAL DAYS. RARELY WILL THE VAN STAY LOCKED WHEN PARKED. IT IS VERY DISTRACTING AND A BIG SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE TRIED TO HAVE IT REPAIRED TWICE, AT 2 DIFFERENT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS. I WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM, AS IT DID NOT LOCK AND UNLOCK WHILE IT WAS IN THEIR CARE. OF COURSE, IT RECURRED BEFORE I RETURNED HOME. *TR
I HAD A TOYOTA SIENNA LE 2002. I WENT TO THE DEALERS 3 YEARS AGO TO REPLACE THE SLIDING DOOR, DURING THAT TIME IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. SOMEHOW THE PROBLEMS APPEAR AGAIN, MY SLIDING WON'T OPEN IS LIKE IT STICK WITH GLUE. IT'S TOTALLY STUCK NO MATTER WHAT I DO IT WON'T OPENED. I NEED TO KNOW DOES TOYOTA STILL HELPED ME FIXED THIS PROBLEM OR I HAD TO USED MY OWN PROBLEM TO FIXED IT. ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING DOOR STOPPED FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. IT WOULD NOT OPEN THE MAJORITY OF TIME. NOW, IT DOESN'T OPEN AT ALL. WHEN THE HANDLE IS PULLED FROM EITHER THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE, THE DOOR APPEARS TO LOCK AND WILL NOT OPEN. TOYOTA WANTED ABOUT $100 TO ATTEMPT TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. ABOUT A MONTH AGO, THE CABLE ON THE POWER SLIDING PASSENGER SIDE DOOR SNAPPED. THE DOOR STILL WORKS MANUALLY, THANKFULLY. TOYOTA WANTS OVER $1,000 DOLLARS TO FIX THIS. I READ IN FORUMS THAT THIS IS A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM, YET TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE A DEFECT. NOW IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH ON A ROAD UNDERGOING CONSTRUCTION, THE TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. HE CHECKED ALL THE TIRES BUT COULD FIND NO PROBLEMS. A MONTH LATER, WHILE DRIVING ON THE SAME ROAD (NO CONSTRUCTION THIS TIME) AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AGAIN. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE TIRES AGAIN BUT FOUND NO CAUSE FOR THE LIGHT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 55,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 72,000.
IN 2003, ECU UNIT WAS REPLACED ON PASSENGER SIDE REAR POWER SLIDING DOOR AS DOOR WOULD INTERMITTENTLY NOT OPEN OR CLOSE. HAS CONTINUED WITH INTERMITTENT PROBLEM SINCE REPLACEMENT UNTIL IT FINALLY WOULD OPEN BY NOT CLOSE. GIVEN THE VERY HIGH VOLUME OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ON ALL YEARS OF THE TOYOTA SIENNA, I WOULD LIKE FOR THE ODI TO OPEN AN INVESTIGATION. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GOOGLE "TOYOTA SIENNA POWER SLIDING DOOR PROBLEMS" AND YOU END UP WITH MULTIPLE THOUSANDS OF HITS, WITH MOST BEING CHAT SITES WITH MULTIPLE COMPLAINT THREADS. *TR
I HAVE A SIENNA XLE 2002 WITH THE ELECTRONIC SLIDING DOORS. FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VAN, THERE ARE THREE BUTTONS TO OPEN THE DOORS; ONE ON THE CONSOLE, ONE ON THE COLUMNS BETWEEN FRONT AND BACK SEATS AND ONE BUTTON IN THE HANDLE. PERIODICALLY THE SLIDING DOORS WILL NOT SHUT OR THEY WILL NOT OPEN. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS JULY 16, 2008 WHEN THE KIDS IN THE BACK DRIVER'S SIDE TRIED TO OPEN THE SLIDING DOOR AND COULD NOT. WE TRIED EVERYTHING AND IT WAS JAMMED SHUT. IT SEEMS LIKE THE BUTTON IN THE HANDLE WAS STUCK (WHICH HAS HAPPENED BEFORE). THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT OR ROLL OVER AND MY PASSENGERS COULD NOT GET OUT. I BELIEVE THIS IS A DEFECT AS I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. MY SIENNA IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY (7 YEARS), BUT TOYOTA WILL NOT WARRANTY THIS LOCK RELEASE BUTTON PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY SAY IT IS PART OF THE HANDLE AND THE HANDLE IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. I COUNTERED THAT THE HANDLE IS FINE, IT IS JUST THE BUTTON DESIGNED IN THE HANDLE THAT IS BROKEN. IF THE BUTTON WAS SITUATED ELSEWHERE IN THE DOOR, I AM SURE IT WOULD BE COVERED. TOYOTA WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT THEY BLATANTLY KNOW ABOUT. *TR
DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SIDE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOORS HAVE BEEN INTERMITTENTLY MALFUNCTIONING EVEN AFTER WARRANTY REPAIRS IN THE PAST. SOMETIME, THE SLIDING DOORS FAIL TO CLOSE AND STAY OPEN, ONLY TO BE CLOSED MANUALLY. *TR
PASSENGER SIDE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON TOYOTA SIENNA LE (2002) IS BAD. WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SLAPPED ME WITH A 1400 ESTIMATE. LEFT TO DEAL WITH SAFETY ISSUES FOR MY CHILDREN WITH MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS AND IF POWER DOOR BUTTON IS ACCIDENTALLY ENGAGED. I FEEL L AM LEFT WITH NO OPTION. THIS REPAIR IS MUCH TO EXPENSIVE AND DOES NOT FALL UNDER ANY WARRANTIES. HOW CAN BUYER BEWARE OF SUCH TRAPS. I AM ONLY MID WAY THROUGH PAYMENTS AND I ALREADY HAVE A MAJOR REPAIR COST THAT HARDLY MAKES THE INITIAL PURCHASE WORTH IT. THE DEALER OFFERED NO ALTERNATIVE THAN TO PUSH THE POWER BUTTON OFF. THIS IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE OPTION WITH CHILDREN AT RISK! *TR
MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED A CERTIFIED USED 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA IN 2005. SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH OPENING AND CLOSING THE SLIDING DOORS AND ISSUE WITH THE TRUNK. IT FIRST STARTED WHEN THE TRUNK WOULD NOT OPEN ANY MORE. THE LITTLE PIECE TO CLICK IT OPEN BROKE OFF. NEXT, THE RIGHT PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE, BUT COULD BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE. NEXT THE LEFT PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR STARTED TO SHOW SIMILARITIES TO THE RIGHT SLIDING PASSENGER DOOR. EVENTUALLY, THIS HANDLE BROKE OFF AS WELL AND WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE. TO DATE, THE SLIDING DOOR ON THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT CAN NOT BE OPENED INSIDE OR OUT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR US AND OUR FOUR KIDS. THE KIDS HAVE TO COME THROUGH THE FRONT TO GET OUT OF THE VAN. IT BECAME SOMEWHAT STRANGE TO ME WHEN I NOTICED THAT OTHER TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVANS HAD HANDLES MISSING OFF THE BACK PASSENGER SLIDING DOORS. I THOUGHT, WHAT IS UP WITH THE QUALITY OF THE VANS? MOST INDIVIDUALS DRIVING MINIVANS ARE TRANSPORTING CHILDREN, SO I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE VANS WERE CONSTRUCTED TO HANDLE THE CONSTANT OPENING AND CLOSING THAT OCCURS FROM THE BACK PASSENGERS. I THINK THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN A FAIR WAY. WHEN WE WENT TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE TRUNK WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WOULD COST OVER $200, SO WE TOOK THE OPTIONAL ROUTE OF LOADING GROCERIES, LUGGAGE, ETC. FROM THE INSIDE. THE DOOR INCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED THIS YEAR, 2010. WE HAVE OWNED OTHER VEHICLES WITH THE KIDS, NAMELY 1997 HONDA ODYSSEY THAT DID NOT HAVE ANY OF THE HANDLES MISSING OR ANY PROBLEMS WITH GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE VEHICLE. I SENT A LETTER TO TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE ON AUGUST 22, 2010 VIA EMAIL, NO RESPONSE. I PHONE TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE ON AUGUST 30, 2010 AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE CAR WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY (I ALREADY KNEW THIS) AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AT THIS TIME. *TR
BOTH SLIDING PASSENGER DOORS AND REAR HATCH DOOR WILL BREAK AND NOT OPEN. WE HAVE HAD AT LEAST 8 INCIDENTS OF DOORS NOT OPENING, AND LATCHES BREAKING NOT ALLOWING ACCESS TO VEHICLE. ON ONE OCCASION, DOOR WAS JAMMED IN THE OPEN POSITION AND NOT ABLE TO CLOSE COMPLETELY. TOYOTA ADVISED DOOR CABLE IN DOOR WAS TOO LONG AND DEALER TOOK CARE OF IT AND THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE PROBLEMS. AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT CAUSE LOCK AND UNLOCK. SOMETIMES IT'S WHILE WE'RE DRIVING, SOMETIMES WHILE PARKED. SOMETIMES IT'S FRONT DOORS ONLY, SOMETIMES BACK ONLY, SOMETIMES ALL OF THEM. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN IT'S WET (SO FAR, SNOWING), THOUGH NOT ALWAYS. ONE CAN BE LOCKED INSIDE THE VEHICLE OR LEAVE IT LOCKED AND RETURN TO FIND IT UNLOCKED. DEALERS ALONG COLORADO FRONT RANGE HAVEN'T HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. AN INTERNET SITE SUGGESTED A SHIELDED SECURITY SYSTEM HARNESS HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR SOME OTHERS. VEHICLE IS NEARLY 6 YEARS OLD WITH 80K MILES. IT'S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE 2/14/08, AND IT'S HAPPENED 6-8 TIMES SINCE - THOUGH VERY INTERMITTENTLY. *TR

THE LEFT SLIDING DOOR STOPPED HALFWAY WHEN CLOSING AND MOVED BACK TO FULLY OPEN POSITION. REPEATED TRIES DID NOT WORK AND SO HAD TO MANUALLY CLOSE THE DOOR. AFTER THAT THE PWR DOOR ICON ON THE DISPLAY LIT UP SHOWING A PROBLEM WITH THE POWER DOOR. TAKING TO THE MECHANIC REVEALED THAT THE MOTOR IS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 31,500 MILES. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. AT 34,006 MILES, THE BRAKES BEGAN TO MAKE SQUEAKING NOISES AND THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH. AT 36,000, 46,000, AND 49,000 MILES, THE DEALER REPLACED THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKES, THE REAR AND FRONT ROTORS, AND ALSO RESURFACED THE FRONT AND REAR DRUMS. THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED UNDER WARRANTY. NEVERTHELESS, THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO SQUEAK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL MUST BE DEPRESSED VERY HARD IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO STOP. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE NOISE WAS DUE TO THE BRAKE BUSTER AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $1,000 SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT BE OF ASSISTANCE SINCE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. THEY PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH REFERENCE NUMBER 2007-0220392. I PURCHASED COOPER LIFE LINER TOURING TIRES FROM KAUFFMAN TIRE. WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF PURCHASE, ONE OF THE TIRES DEVELOPED A LARGE BUBBLE ON THE SIDEWALL. KAUFFMAN STAFF TOLD ME THIS TYPE OF BUBBLE WAS A RESULT OF "HITTING A CURB OR OTHER OBJECT." I KNEW I HAD NOT HIT ANYTHING. THEY REPLACED THE TIRE WITH THE SAME BRAND & MODEL. AS TIME WENT BY, I HAD CHRONIC PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE PULLING TO THE RIGHT. I VISITED KAUFFMAN SEVERAL TIMES. THEY ADJUSTED MY ALIGNMENT AND CHECKED MY TIRE PRESSURE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, TO NO AVAIL. TUESDAY, JULY 3, 2007, I STOPPED BY KAUFFMAN AND TOLD THEM THERE WAS APPARENTLY AN UNDERLYING PROBLEM THAT CAUSED MY VAN TO PULL SO SEVERELY THAT I HAD TO STRUGGLE TO KEEP IN MY LANE. I REQUESTED THAT THEY DO AN IN-DEPTH CHECK TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THEY FOUND THAT 3 OF THE 4 COOPER LIFE LINER TOURING TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE, ONE HAD A BUBBLE IN THE SIDEWALL. KAUFFMAN EMPLOYEE AGAIN TOLD ME THAT THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY STRIKING A CURB OR OTHER OBJECT. AGAIN, I KNEW I HAD NOT HIT THE TIRE ON ANYTHING. KAUFFMAN EMPLOYEES REPLACED THE TIRES WITH 3 NEW COOPER LIFE LINER TOURING TIRES. ON JULY 6, 2007, ONE OF THE NEW TIRES DEVELOPED A HUGE BUBBLE IN THE SIDEWALL AND LEFT ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF I-20 IN ALABAMA. AN INTERNET SEARCH LED ME TO YOUR WEBSITE, WHERE I FOUND THAT THE TIRES KAUFFMAN PUT ON MY VEHICLE IN 2007 WERE RECALLED IN 2006. I FEAR SOMEONE MAY BE INJURED OR KILLED BY THESE FAILING COOPER TIRES. *AK
WITHIN A YEAR AFTER BUYING THE 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA THE RIGHT SIDE SLIDING DOOR COULD NOT BE OPENED FROM INSIDE. THE LEFT SIDE DOOR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM INTERMITTANTLY. NEITHER ONE HAS BEEN REPAIRED BUT ARE SEEN AS A SAFETY CONCERN IN THE WORST CASE AND A CONSTANT NUISANCE OTHERWISE. THE ISSUE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND SO REMAIN. THE REAR DOOR PLASTIC LATCH BROKE AFTER ABOUT FOUR YEARS, REQUIRING A $200 REPAIR. IT BROKE AGAIN AFTER ABOUT THREE MORE YEARS BUT THIS TIME I REPAIRED IT WITH A METAL SCREW, BUT A YEAR LATER IT BROKE IN ANOTHER PLACE AND CANNOT BE REPAIRED. THE PART IS MADE OF SLIGHTLY SOFT BRITTLE PLASTIC, POORLY DESIGNED. INTERESTINGLY, I RECENTLY BOUGHT A NEW TOYOTA PRIUS AND PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. READING THE FINE PRINT I FIND IN THE RATHER LONG LIST OF EXCLUSIONS FROM THE "BUMPER TO BUMPER" WARRANTY ARE INCLUDED DOOR LATCHES AS WELL AS, IRONICALLY, THE BUMPERS. *TT

I BOUGHT A USED SIENNA MINI VAN FROM TOYOTA IN MD WITH 55.000 MILES ON IT WITH ALL THE WARRANTIES.WHEN WE WENT TO USE THE REAR SEAT BELT ON DRIVER'S SIDE WE NOTICED IT WOULD NOT RETRACT. 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN. THE VEHICLE COMPUTER WILL SPORADICALLY TRIGGER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON BASED ON NO ACTUAL CAUSE. THIS OCCURS AROUND EVERY 5,000 MILES. IT IS TYPICAL FOR THIS COMPUTER FAILURE TO BEGIN AFTER 75,000 MILES ON THIS YEAR OF SIENNA AND TOYOTA'S RECALL ONLY COVERS VEHICLES UP TO 75,000 MILES. THE COMPUTER COSTS $1,000 TO REPLACE. THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO VEHICLES 10YRS OLD OR LESS. THERE IS PROBABLY AN INTERNAL MEMO FLOATING AROUND TOYOTA WITH A DOLLAR FIGURE ATTACHED BRANZELY BOASTING HOW MUCH THEY SAVED BY "SMOKING" A SHORTER RECALL PERIOD PAST THE US GOVERNMENT. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICES HAS BEEN HOSTILE TOWARD RESOLVING THIS COMPLAINT. *TR
BEGAN HAVING INDICATOR LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD OF MY VEHICLE (TOYOTA SIENNA 2002) COME ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON; SPECIFICALLY, THE CSV AND BRAKE LIGHTS CONCURRENTLY. IT SEEMED TO OCCUR MORE WHEN TEMPERATURE WAS COLD OUTSIDE. INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A FAULTY SENSOR, BUT WHEN THE INTERMITTENT NATURE OF FAULT BECAME MORE FREQUENT, WAS CONCERNED COULD BE A SERIOUS BRAKE PROBLEM. I TOOK TO DEALER; DIAGNOSIS WAS A 'FAULTY SENSOR' ON THE WHEEL'S "SENSOR/HUB ASSEMBLY". APPARENTLY, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO REPLACE THE FAULTY SENSOR WITHOUT REPLACING THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF OVER $600 FOR THE PART, NOT INCLUDING LABOR, AT $115/HR. (IT ALSO TOOK THEM AN HR JUST TO DIAGNOSE, SO ADD ANOTHER $115). THEY DISABLED SENSOR WHILE PART ON ORDER, WHICH MEANT THAT MY ANTI-LOCK BREAKS - A KEY SAFETY FEATURE OF THE VEHICLE-- WILL NOT WORK UNTIL PART IS REPLACED. WHILE MY CAR IS OVER 4 YRS OLD, IT ONLY HAS 31,042 MILES ON IT. I FIND IT UNBELIEVABLE THAT A PART OF THIS SIGNIFICANCE TO SAFETY HAS FAILED AT SUCH A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF MILES. MOREOVER, IT WAS REPORTED TO ME BY DEALER'S SERVICE TECH, THAT THEY "HARDLY EVER HAVE FAILURES OF THIS PART". IT MAY BE A STATISTICAL ANOMALY...OR NOT...PERHAPS THEY HAVE DISCOURAGED FOLKS FROM REPORTING THIS VERY COSTLY FAILURE OF A KEY SAFETY RELATED PART. *NM

TOYOTA CHARGED ME FOR THE REPAIR AND SAID IT WAS A FLUKE. YESTERDAY, THE PASSENGER SIDE FAILED AGAIN ALLOWING WIND AND WATER INTO THE CAR. INTERMITTENTLY, THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR, THE AUTOMATIC SLIDER, DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. WHILE CLOSING, THE DOOR POPS OPEN UNLESS HELD AND DRAGGED INTO LATCHING POSITION. DEPRESSING THE BUTTON NEAR THE DOOR, ON THE KEY CHAIN, OR ON THE DASHBOARD MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. RESETTING THE SWITCH BY UNHOOKING THE BATTERY DOES NOT IMPACT IT. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS JUST A COUPLE OF YEARS OLD AND ON WARRANTEE. AT THAT TIME A CABLE WAS ADJUSTED AND IT WAS BETTER FOR SOME TIME. THE PROBLEM COMES AND GOES WITHOUT ADJUSTING; CURRENTLY SERVICE ENGINEERS FIND NO EASY RESOLUTION UPON EVALUATION. RATHER, THEY REPORT A NEED TO GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL HARNESS AT GREAT EXPENSE.
