VEHICLE FRAME RUSTED TO THE POINT WHERE IT WILL BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE SOON. VEHICLE IS FROM A "HEAVY ROAD SALT USE" STATE, BUT HAS HAD VERY LIMITED EXPOSURE TO SALT DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. MOST TIMES THE FRAME HAS BEEN RINSED WITH CLEAN WATER AFTER EXPOSURE TO SALT. TOYOTA'S VOLUNTARY REPAIR PERIOD HAS EXPIRED, YET THEY ACKNOWLEDGE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. IN ADDITION THERE IS A RECALL FOR A SIMILAR ITEM RELATED TO THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER ON THE SAME VEHICLE. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, SHE NOTICED SOMETHING HAD BECOME DETACHED FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK PROTECTOR WAS CORRODED AND HAD CAUSED THE FUEL TANK TO BECOME DETACHED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 61,400...UPDATED 10/30/13 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER FOUND THE VEHICLE HAD A PREFORATION. THE FRAME AND THE STRAPS FOR THE FUEL TANK WERE REPLACED. FREE OF CHARGE. *JS
FRAME RUSTED COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE NEVER REC'D ANY NOTICE OF RUST PROBLEM. *TR
THIS IS A STORY ABOUT THE PURCHASE OF A BRAND NEW TOYOTA TACOMA IN 2004 THAT I PAID CASH FOR. ON OR ABOUT JANUARY OF 2012 I CALLED TOYOTA TO FIND OUT IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE JUST CHECKING. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL FOR A FRAME RUSTING WHEN WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR ANOTHER SERVICE MATTER WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE FRAME (THERE WAS NO RECORD OF OUR HAVING BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALL JUST THE SERVICE THAT WAS PERFORMED). WE NEVER RECEIVED OFFICIAL NOTICE OF THE RECALL BUT NOW WE HAVE A FRAME RUSTING ISSUE WITH SOME AREAS THAT ARE ROTTING THROUGH THE FRAME! WHEN I CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS I WAS INFORMED THAT THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED SEVEN DAYS PRIOR AND THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME! HOW CAN THIS BE? IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE PRODUCT AND THE VEHICLE IS SHOWING THE DEFECT FROM THE RECALL HOW CAN IT EXPIRE? TOYOTA HAS RECOMMENDED WE RETAIN A LAWYER FOR THIS ISSUE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I HAVE A TRUCK WORTH NEXT TO NOTHING THAT I DEPEND ON FOR MY LIVING AND THEY TELL ME TO GET A LAWYER? FRANKLY, I AM VERY SURPRISED AT TOYOTA A COMPANY WITH AN EXCELLENT REPUTATION, THAT I THOUGHT MAKES GOOD CARS AND TRUCKS NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR DEFECTIVE MERCHANDISE. I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE FROM TOYOTA AND TO ME THEIR REPUTATION IS NOW TARNISHED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR AN UNRELATED REPAIR WHEN THEY NOTICED THAT THE ENTIRE FRAME WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AND CAUSED THE FUEL TANK TO BECOME SLIGHTLY DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC STRAPPED THE FUEL TANK BACK ONTO THE VEHICLE AS A TEMPORARY REMEDY. THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL ISSUED BY THE MANUFACTURER RELATED TO THE FRAME, HOWEVER THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED. THERE WAS ALSO A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 12V542000 (TIRES) BUT THE DEALER REFUSED TO HONOR THE RECALL BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S VOLUNTARY RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL, INVOLVING FRAME RUST. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V542000(SUSPENSION). THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO CUMBERLAND TOYOTA (1540 INTERSTATE DR, COOKEVILLE, TN 38501, (931) 272-3719) AND WAS INFORMED THAT HER VEHICLE DID NOT NEED A REMEDY AND WAS SAFE TO OPERATE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE SAME DEALER A FEW YEARS LATER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT BE SERVICED DUE TO THE CORROSION THAT HAD ACCUMULATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED HER THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. *PM*JB
WHILE DRIVING ALONG I WOULD SOMETIMES HEAR AN UNUSUAL SOUND, A SLIGHT RINGING SOUND. WHEN I RETURNED HOME AND INSPECTED MY TRUCK I SAW THAT ONE OF THE METAL STRAPS THAT HOLDS THE GAS TANK IN PLACE HAD RUSTED APART, AND THE BRACKET WOULD RUB AGAINST THE DRIVE SHAFT, CREATING THE SOUND. THIS IS ONE OF THE TACOMA'S THAT WAS RE-FRAMED AS PART OF A RECALL. IT APPEARS THE SAME DEFECTIVE METAL USED IN THE FRAME THAT WAS REPLACED WAS ALSO USED IN OTHER COMPONENTS. THE GAS TANK COULD HAVE FALLEN, DROPPED ON TO THE ROAD, OR SIMPLY EXPLODED, NO DOUBT KILLING MYSELF AND MY WIFE. I HAD THE GAS TANK STRAPS REPLACED AT A LOCAL GARAGE. I ALSO HAVE PICTURES OF THE BROKEN STRAP IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM. *TR
YESTERDAY, I WENT TO MY MECHANIC FOR AN INSPECTION ON MY 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. HE SAID IT WOULDN'T PASS BECAUSE HOLES WERE EVERYWHERE ALONG THE FRAME. I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA. THEY TOOK PICTURES AND DOCUMENTED THE FACT THAT MY CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THEY SAID IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM, AND THAT I HAD BEEN GIVEN FOUR YEARS TO FIX IT. WHEN I LOOKED UP MY VIN NUMBER ONLINE, IT MENTIONED ONLY THE RECALL FOR THE SPARE TIRE (WHICH I HAD ALREADY TAKEN OFF THREE YEARS AGO). I CALLED TOYOTA CENTRAL, AND THEY SAID IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM. APPARENTLY, I HAD RECEIVED A FIRST CLASS LETTER BETWEEN NOVEMBER OF 2010 AND DECEMBER OF 2011 WHICH STATED THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE MY FRAME SPRAYED. THEY SAID THAT THE CUTOFF FOR THIS "REMEDY" WAS DECEMBER, 2012. WHEN I ASKED IF, HAD I HAD THE FRAME SPRAYED SIX MONTHS AGO, WOULD THIS ROT HAVE MIRACULOUSLY NOT APPEARED, THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW. THEY APOLOGIZED FOR THE FACT THAT IT WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM, AND THAT WAS THAT. I MAY HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER...I AM NOT SURE, AND CANNOT HONESTLY CLAIM I DIDN'T RECEIVE IT. WHAT I DO KNOW THAT I DO, THOUGH, IS REGULARLY CHECK ON LINE FOR RECALLS SO THAT I CAN MAKE SURE THAT I AM NOT MISSING ANYTHING. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THIS PARTICULAR RECALL WAS VOLUNTARY, AND THEREFORE IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN POSTED IN NORMAL CHANNELS. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THE DEALER SPECIFICALLY SAID THAT SOMEONE HAD COME IN THE PREVIOUS WEEK WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND IT WAS "TOO BAD". HE ALSO SAID THAT TOYOTA WOULD PROBABLY BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE WERE HAVING SUCH MAJOR SAFETY ISSUES. HE SAID THAT IF I WANTED TO HOLD ON TO THE TRUCK...MAYBE SOMETHING WOULD HAPPEN IN A YEAR. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH A TRUCK I CAN'T DRIVE BECAUSE IT WON'T PASS INSPECTION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED UNSAFE? *TR
LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPORTED THAT THE ENGINE (V6 3.4) LEFT BANK HEAD GASKET IS LEAKING AND REQUIRES A REPLACEMENT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET, WITH A VALVE RECONFIGURATION, AT THE ESTIMATED COST OF $2,762.00. SINCE TOYOTA HAS HAD PREVIOUS VEHICLE RECALLS FOR V6 SERIES ENGINE/GASKET RELIABILITY ISSUES AND THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION ONLY HAS 51,559 MILES, WITH EXCELLENT MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE, THAT THE CYLINDER GASKET HEAD LEAK MAY BE A PRODUCTION DEFECT AND OTHER OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE. *TR
VEHICLE FRAME IS RUSTING, ROTTING, AND CRUMBLING FROM BENEATH THE TRUCK. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE CONDITION WHEN I WAS TOLD BY A MECHANIC DURING A PENNSYLVANIA STATE VEHICLE INSPECTION THAT THE FRAME WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL AND SPLIT APART AS I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I MISSED THE RECALL WINDOW WHICH WOULD HAVE EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE FRAME. WHEN I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT I WAS NOT CONTACTED ABOUT SUCH AN IMPORTANT RECALL, AND IF I WERE I WOULD HAVE TO BE AN IDIOT NOT TO ACT ON IT, THEY REPLIED THAT THEIR RECORDS SHOW THAT A LETTER WAS SENT TO ME THEREFORE TOYOTA WILL NOT HONOR THE RECALL AND REPLACE MY CRUMBLING FRAME. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED HE WAS DRIVING 20 MPH AND COMPLETING A RIGHT TURN WHEN HE APPLIED THE BRAKES, BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL ABNORMALLY WENT DOWN TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT TWO BRAKES LINES WERE FRACTURED AND WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE MECHANIC THEN ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL FOR FRAME CORROSION, AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER HOWEVER, THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO CONFIRM FRAME CORROSION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000. LEVER ASSEMBLY AND BRAKE DRUM FOR REAL WHEEL EMERGENCY BRAKES RUSTED TO THE POINT THAT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS INOPERABLE (SEIZED). CONDITION HAS CAUSED REAR BRAKE TO BE PARTIALLY ENGAGED WHETHER PARKING BRAKE IS PULLED OR NOT. THIS WEARS OUT THE REAR BRAKE PADS VERY FAST, AND MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON AN INCLINE. WILL NOT PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM ROLLING DOWN HILL, NOR WILL IT STOP THE VEHICLE DURING AN EMERGENCY APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE. IT IS NO LONGER FUNCTIONING AS AN EMERGENCY BRAKE. *TR
2004 TOYOTA TACOMA V6 3.4L 5VZ-FE WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. TOYOTA ORIGINALLY EQUIPPED THIS VEHICLE WITH A THROTTLE BY WIRE SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY DOES NOT RESPOND TO ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION. TOYOTA ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM DOES NOT DETECT FAULT THUS DOES NOT LOG ANY ERROR CODES OR ILLUMINATE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. OCCURRENCE RATE AND DURATION OF EVENTS IS INTERMITTENT AND INCONSISTENT. VELOCITY OF THE VEHICLE RAPIDLY DECREASES UNEXPECTEDLY AND MOMENTARILY AS IF FOOT WAS TEMPORARILY REMOVED FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. VEHICLE ALSO UNEXPECTEDLY AND MOMENTARILY DOES NOT RESPOND WHEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS DEPRESSED TO BEGIN MOVING OR SUDDENLY DECREASES SPEED WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS IS A POTENTIAL HAZARD IN SITUATIONS SUCH AS CRUISING IN TRAFFIC, CLEARING AN INTERSECTION, CROSSING RAILROAD TRACKS, ETC... OCCURRENCE RATE AND DURATION OF PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WORSENING OVER TIME OR WITH INCREASED AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. *TR
I PURCHASED A USED 2004 TACOMA PICK-UP TRUCK FROM AN INDEPENDENT DEALER AND NOTED THE FRONT AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. I FINALLY TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR REPAIR IN 2013. THEY REPLACED THE SPIRAL CABLE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHICH TURNED THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT OFF FOR A FEW WEEKS AND THEN IT BECAME ILLUMINATED AGAIN. I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY WORKED ON IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND SAID THE ONLY REMEDY IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY FOR $1600. I AM UNSATISFIED SINCE THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THE TACOMA AIR BAG SYSTEMS FROM MODELS 2005 AND HIGHER BUT NOT THIS YEAR. HOW CAN SUCH A SIMILAR PROBLEM NOT BE A MANUFACTURING ISSUE? MEANWHILE I PROBABLY DO NOT HAVE PROPER FUNCTIONING AIR BAGS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED A HOLE IN THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA PICKUP WITCH WAS INCLUDED IN THE FRAME RECALL. AT THE TIME OF THIS RECALL I WAS HAVING HEALTH ISSUES THAT PREVENTED ME FROM FOLLOWING THOUGH ON THE RECALL. AFTER I GOT BACK ON MY FEET I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER IN BERLIN VERMONT AND WAS TOLD IT WAS TO LATE TO HAVE IT DONE. I THEN CALLED TOYOTA AND SPOKE WITH A GENTLEMAN, I TOLD THIS PERSON ALL ABOUT MY HEALTH ISSUES THAT HAD PREVENTED ME FROM GETTING THIS TAKEN CARE OF. HE ALSO TOLD ME IT WAS TO LATE TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND REPAIRED. I THEN ASKED HIM WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE FRAME BROKE WHEN DRIVING AND CAUSED A CRASH OR A DEATH AND HE TOLD ME THAT WAS MY PROBLEM. I NOW HAVE A RECALL ABOUT A SPARE TIRE HANGER THAT MAY RUST OFF ALLOWING THE SPARE TIRE TO FALL OFF. IT WOULD SEEM TO ME THAT THIS IS JUST A CONTINUATION OF THE FRAME PROBLEM THAT I WAS TOLD I WAS TO LATE FOR..I HAVE RUN MY OWN AUTO REPAIR SHOP FOR OVER 30 YEARS SO I AM NOTE UNFAMILIAR WITH AUTOS OR DEALER. THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL ISSUED BY THE MANUFACTURER RELATED TO THE FRAME; HOWEVER, THE RECALL EXPIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,000.
EXCESSIVE RUST. RECALL TWICE.
I PURCHASED A USED 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4 4 YEARS AGO IN NY. I MOVED TO MA 2 YEARS AGO AND TOOK TRUCK TO A CAPE COD TOYOTA DEALER AND ASKED THEM TO CHANGE OIL AND TELL ME IF THERE WERE ANY ISSUES I NEEDED TO DEAL WITH. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT THEY TOLD ME ABOUT THE SPARE TIRE RUST RECALL AND MADE THE REPAIR. WHEN WE PICKED UP THE TRUCK THEY GAVE IT A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH. THEY THEN SAID "BY THE WAY, YOU HAVE A TINY HOLE IN FRAME THAT MAY NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF AT SOME POINT-NOT URGENT." FAST FORWARD 2 YEARS- A GARAGED TRUCK THAT ONLY HAD AN ADDITIONAL 7,000 MILES. WE TOOK IT FOR THE MA STATE INSPECTION AND IT FAILED. THEY SAID IT NEEDED A NEW MUFFLER. WE TOOK IT TO OUR LOCAL CAPE COD MECHANIC WHO CALLED AND SAID THE PROBLEM WAS MUCH BIGGER- THE ENTIRE FRAME IS RUSTED OUT AND IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. WE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THEY WON'T DO ANYTHING. THE DEALER CALLED TO SAY COME PICK IT UP EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. HOW MUCH IS A LIFE WORTH? OBVIOUSLY TOYOTA DOESN'T CARE. HELP PLEASE!!!
ACCORDING TO RECORDS, [XXX], TOYOTA EXTENDED THE CORROSION-RESISTANT TREATMENT (CRT) BEYOND 2010.THE DOCUMENT READS ADDITIONAL 15 YEARS. CURRENTLY I VISITED A TOYATO DEALER AND THEY CLAIMED TOYOTA ENDED THE AGGREEMENT DEC. 2012. NO NOTICE WAS RECIEVED OF CHANGE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY ADVISED THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED AND THE CAB MOUNTS WERE CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,255.
3 YEARS AGO TOYOTA SENT US A NOTICED AND CALLED .. ASKING US TO HAVE OUR FRAME INSPECTED DUE TO FRAME FAILURES AND RUST. WE COMPLIED AND HAD THE UNDERCOATING AND FRAME INSPECTED FOR 3 YEARS WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS WOULD PROTECT US IF FUTURE FRAME PROBLEMS WERE IDENTIFIED. THIS YEAR 2012 WE WERE TOLD WE DIDN'T NEED TO HAVE THE FRAME INSPECTED, HOWEVER WHEN WE WERE REPLACING THE BRAKES WE NOTICED SIGNIFICANT RUST ON THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED OUR DEALER FOR A FRAME INSPECTION AND WAS TOLD THE FRAME HAD FAILED AND THAT WE SHOULDN'T DRIVE THE VEHICLE. FOR SAFETY REASONS. I CALLED THE TOYOTA HOTLINE AND RECEIVED A CLAIM NUMBER WAS TOLD WE WERE ELIGIBLE FOR THE A FRAME REPLACEMENT BECAUSE WE HAD RECEIVED THE UNDERCOATING . THERE WAS ONE ON THE LEFT SIDE NEAR THERE SWAY BAR AND TWO ON THE RIGHT SIDE JUST IN FRONT OF THE PASSENGER DOOR. THE DEALER CALLED TOYOTA AND TOYOTA SAID THE PROGRAM FOR UNDERCOATING THE FRAME ENDED IN DECEMBER AND THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK IN JANUARY 2011 FROM THE DEALER (TJ TOYOTA, POTSDAM NY) AND THEY DID NOT UNDERCOAT THE FRAME BEFORE THEY SOLD THE TRUCK TO ME (WITH 77,500 MI). THIS CONDITION BEGAN AROUND THE 60,000 MILE MARK AND WILL CONTINUE INDEFINITELY UNTIL THE GEAR LUBE IS ALL DRAINED OFF, WHICH THEN WILL MOST CERTAINLY CAUSE SEVERE POWER TRAIN DAMAGE.

DECEMBER 26, 2013- GOING EAST ON WARNER RD. AT 45 MILES PER HOUR FROM KYRENE AND WARNER. MINIMAL TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD. AT WARNER AND BULLMOOSE A CAR DID NOT STOP AT THE STOP SIGN AT BULLMOOSE TO PULL OUT ONTO WARNER. I HIT THE CAMARO, T-BONED HIM. WHY DIDN'T THE RECALL COVER THESE COMPONENTS, WHICH ARE LOCATED IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA AND SUBJECT TO THE SAME CORROSIVE CONDITIONS AS THE FRAME, LEAF SPRINGS, CONTROL ARMS, ETC., ALL OF WHICH WERE REPLACED? IF THE FLUID DRAINS FROM THE HOUSING AS A RESULT OF RUST/CORROSION, THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR THE DRIVETRAIN TO LOCK UP, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER SPEEDS, RESULTING IN AN OBVIOUSLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. AFTER REPLACING THE RACK, SWAY BAR BUSHINGS, AND STRUTS @ 48000 MILE WITH NO OFFROAD DRIVING THE STEERING IS STILL EXTREMELY LOOSE. IS YOU HIT A BUMP WHILE IN A CURVE ON THE FREEWAY YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE JUST ALONG FOR THE RIDE WITH ALMOST NO CONTROL. DEALERSHIP ADVISED NO RECALLS AND TRUCK IS OUT OF WARRANTY. TOYOTA WON A LAWSUIT OVER THIS POOR QUALITY FRAME, AND HAS BOUGHT BACK ALL '95-'99 TOYOTAS WITH THIS FRAME, AND REPLACED FRAMES ON '00-'04 TRUCKS. TOYOTA IS STATING THAT OUR TACOMA DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PUT OUT ON THESE AFFECTED FRAMES, AS IT WAS NOT UNDERCOATED AS PART OF THEIR PREVENTION PROGRAM. HOWEVER, IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED THAT THE UNDERCOATING WAS INEFFECTIVE, AND THE FRAMES CONTINUED TO RUST OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WE FEEL STRONGLY THAT TOYOTA SHOULD OFFER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY TO ALL TRUCKS AFFECTED BY THIS FAULTY CONSTRUCTED FRAME. TOYOTA IS REPORTING THAT THEY CAN DO NOTHING FURTHER TO HELP IN THIS CASE, DESPITE THAT IT IS AN OTHERWISE WELL EQUIPPED AND STRONGLY RUNNING TRUCK, WHICH HAS HAD ONGOING AND CONSISTENT ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. I BROUGHT MY TRUCK TO A TOYOTA DEALER TO LOCATE AN EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK. TWO OTHER MECHANICS HAD SPENT HOURS TRYING TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND WERE UNABLE TO FIND THE LEAK. THE TOYOTA TECH FOUND THE LEAK IN LESS THAN 20 MINUTES. THAT WOULD LEAD ME TO BELIEVE HE HAD DEALT WITH THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. THE LEAK TURNED OUT TO BE CORROSION IN THE FUEL TANK, WHERE THE FILLER NECK MEETS THE TANK. I WOULD NOT EXPECT A RUSTED GAS TANK IN AN 8 YEAR OLD TRUCK. THE REPAIR ESTIMATE WAS OVER $1400, THE PART ALONE WAS $750. THIS IS A TRUCK THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN RECALLED FOR A RUSTED FRAME (WHICH TOYOTA REPLACED AT NO COST TO ME) AND IS SHOWING CORROSION IN THE REAR BUMPER AND TAILGATE. I SUSPECT TOYOTA SAVED MONEY BY BUILDING THE TRUCK WITH INFERIOR MATERIALS. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, A LEAKING FUEL TANK IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE, NOT COMMON IN A VEHICLE THIS RECENT. *TR

THE CONTACT SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURIES TO HER HEAD AND NECK. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED.THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 164,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE FUEL TANK. AS A RESULT, THE FUEL TANK AND SENDING UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 111,000.
WHILE DRIVING THE ENGINE SPEED DROPPED AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STOPPED RESPONDING. AFTER TOWING THE TRUCK HOME I READ THE SCAN CODES AND THERE WERE MANY THAT RELATED TO THE THROTTLE BODY SENSORS. IN ORDER TO DEBUG THE SYSTEM I CLEARED THE PROBLEM. WITH THE KEY ON AND THE ENGINE NOT RUNNING I TESTED THE DRIVE-BY-WIRE SYSTEM MANUALLY. IT RESPONDED CORRECTLY AND SHOWED NO PROBLEMS. NO MORE CODES WERE THROWN. I STARTED THE TRUCK AND PUT IT IN GEAR AND ENGINE WENT TO FULL THROTTLE IMMEDIATELY. I TURNED THE TRUCK OFF QUICKLY AND RECHECKED THE DRIVE BY WIRE SERVO SYSTEM. IT STILL WORKED CORRECTLY WITH NO CODES THROWN. I AM AN ENGINEER AND HAVE WORKED A GREAT DEAL WITH SERVO SYSTEMS INCLUDING WRITING A BOOK ON THE HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT THESE SYSTEMS. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THE DESIGNERS DID NOT BUILD ANY REDUNDANCY INTO THE FEEDBACK AND CONTROL DEVICES. THIS DEVICE IS CONSIDERED A MAJOR RISK IN A FAILURE MODE ANALYSIS. IF I DID THAT TYPE OF WORK IN MY POSITION I WOULD BE FIRED AND HAVE AND UNENDING LIST OF LAWSUITS BROUGHT AGAINST ME. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE IN TERMS OF RELIABILITY HOWEVER I AM VERY SURPRISED THAT A COMPANY AS LARGE AS TOYOTA WOULD LEAVE SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO CHANCE. THIS DEVICE CAN EASILY FAIL IN A WAY THAT WOULD CAUSE A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. I WAS LUCKY TO HAVE IT FAIL AT LOW THROTTLE AND NOT FULL THROTTLE AS IT DID WHEN I TESTED IT AT HOME. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE AND TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS IT. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY "COULDN'T HELP" ME. IT COST $1200 TO REPAIR. IT'S NOT THE MONEY, IT'S THE RISK THAT THIS FAILURE IMPOSES. THE TRUCK NOW BELONGS TO MY 16 YEAR-OLD SON AND I'M CONCERNED ABOUT HIS SAFETY. GAS TANK SHIELD CORRODING WHEN NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA ABOUT CORROSION PROBLEMS TO THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK, I INSPECTED THE UNDER NEATH OF THE TRUCK MYSELF AND ALSO NOTICED THE GAS TANK SHIELD HAD CORRODED AWAY. WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE FRAME CHECKED, I TOLD THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM WITH THE GAS TANK SHIELD AND THEY TOLD ME THAT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL.NOW A YEAR LATER, I JUST RECEIVED ANOTHER RECALL FOR A DIFFERENT PROBLEM," EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER PLATE". IF THE FRAMES AND SPARE TIRE CARRIER PLATES CORRODE DUE TO HIGH ROAD SALT USE IN COLD CLIMATE STATES, WHY ARE THE GAS TANK SHIELDS CORRODING ? I TOOK MY TRUCK IN FOR THE YEARLY INSPECTION AND IT FAILED FOR A HOLE IN THE FRAME. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS INFORMED THAT I MISSED A CUSTOMER CARE SERVICE TO INSPECT THE FRAME AND THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY WOULD DO FOR ME. I REPAIRED THE HOLE AND THE VEHICLES PASSED INSPECTION FOR THE FRAME THE PAST TWO YEARS.I WAS DRIVING TODAY AND FOUND THAT THE BED OF MY TRUCK CROOKED. I CHECKED THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FRAME TO FIND THAT IT IS COMPLETELY ROTTED AND THE TRUCK IS NOW UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WILL THIS FRAME RUST ISSUE EVER BECOME A RECALL? I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND A CAR WAS IN A ACCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WAS ON ITS SIDE. THE OWNERS OF THE CAR HAD GOT OUT TO SAFETY, BUT HAD TO LEAVE IT TO PROTECT THEMSELVES. OTHER CARS WHERE AROUND AND I HAD NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO HIT HEAD ON. I WAS DOING ABOUT 65 MILES AN HOUR AND SLAMMING ON MY BRAKES DID LITTLE TO AVOID OR LESSON MY REDUCTION OF SPEED. THANK GOD MY PASSENGER AND I HAD ON OUR SAFETY BELTS. MY TRUCK COMES WITH AIR BAGS AND WAS LISTED AS A GOOD PRODUCTION OF VEHICLES WITH SAFE AND QUALITY PROTECTION IN AN ACCIDENT. I LOVE MY TRUCK. I WAS NOT PROTECTED AS LED TO BELIEVE. MY AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. MY TRUCK IS BEYOND QUESTIONABLE OF MY IMPACT THEY SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. I BARELY HAVE A FRONT PORTION OF A BUMPER. ENGINE WAS SMASHED INTO MY CAB PRACTICALLY. FENDERS CAVED IN. TOTALED.... I NEED HELP UNDERSTANDING THIS. I NEED TO BE INSURED THAT TOYOTA WOULD NOT LET THIS BE OVERLOOKED.
