TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER A RECALL FOR THE FRAME. AFTER THE FRAME WAS REPAIRED, THE DEALER STATED THAT ALL FOUR BRAKES ALSO NEEDED REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN.
THERE HAS BEEN "RECALL' ON THESE VEHICLES REGARDING EXCESSIVE FRAME RUSTING. THIS CAR WAS "INSPECTED" AND FOUND NOT TO HAVE A DEFECT. A FEW WEEKS LATER THE BRAKES FAILED DUE TO BRAKE LINE RUST THOUGH. THE BRAKE LINE (FRONT BRAKES) WITH THE PROBLEM WAS MOUNTED ON THE FRAME. THE BRAKES FAILED WHEN I WAS EXITING A PARKING LOT AND DESCENDING A SHORT HILL TO THE MAIN STREET. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE IT ENTERED THE STREET BUT FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC AT THE TIME.
2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. CONSUMER STATED ISSUES WITH FRAME OF VEHICLE AND BRAKE LINES LEAKING. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE FRAME HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE WAS INFORMED, IT WOULD BE TWO MONTHS, BEFORE THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE TO FIX THE FRAME. THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKES WERE FINE, WHEN ARRIVED AT THE REPAIR SHOP. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE REPAIR SHOP DAMAGED THE BRAKE LINES, WHEN THEY CHECKING THE FRAME. AFTER TWO MONTHS PASSED, THE CONSUMER CALLED THE REPAIR SHOP AND WAS INFORMED THE PARTS HAD ARRIVED. HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT HAVE THE KITS. *JB
I WAS PULLING INTO A CURB PARKING SPACE WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE ON MY TRUCK ACCELERATED. MY FOOT WAS ALREADY ON THE BRAKE SO I PUSHED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BUT I WAS SLOWLY MOVING FORWARD ANYWAY. MY BRAKES WERE SMOKING FROM TRYING TO STOP MY TRUCK. I HIT THE BACK OF A PARKED CAR AND PUSHED IT APPROXIMATELY TWO PARKING SPACES BEFORE I THOUGHT TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF. *TR
IT WAS CLEAR AND DRY ON THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT. THE HOV LANE WAS DRY AND NEWLY PAVED. I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 65-60 MPG WHEN I SAW BRAKE LIGHTS. I BEGAN TO DECELERATE AND STEP ON THE BRAKES AT ABOUT 300 FEET. SUDDENLY, I NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WAS NOT STOPPING, BUT RATHER THAT IT HAD ALREADY STOPPED! AT APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET AWAY FROM THE CAR, I PRESSED MY BRAKE PETAL TO THE FLOOR. AT 20 FEET BEHIND HIM, I SAID TO MYSELF THAT MY VEHICLE HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO STOP BEFORE HITTING HIM. BUT SOMETHING HAPPENED AT THIS POINT. IT FELT LIKE SOMEONE WAS PUSHING MY VEHICLE FROM THE BACK (IT WAS NOT BEING PUSHED), OR THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, OR THAT THE ABS SYSTEM RELEASED THE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES. THE RESULT WAS THAT I REAR-ENDED THE VEHICLE. ALTHOUGH OUR AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, NEITHER I NOR MY PASSENGER HAD CONTACT WITH THE AIRBAGS. I WAS PROBABLY GOING LESS THAN 15 MPH AT IMPACT. WHEN BRAKING, I NEVER FELT THE TATTLE-TELL FEELING OF A PULSATING BRAKE PEDAL WHEN THE ABS SYSTEM GOES INTO EFFECT. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS SYSTEM IN THE PAST WHEN DRIVING IN 4-WHEEL DRIVE IN SNOW AND DRIVING OFF ROAD. THE ABS SYSTEM WOULD TAKE THE BRAKING CONTROL AWAY FROM ME, WHICH HAS CAUSED SOME PROBLEMS. THIS HAPPENED IN 2009 (OFF ROAD) AND 2010 IN DEEP SNOW. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO EXAMINE MY BRAKING AND ABS SYSTEM. THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. IF THE ABS IS AT FAULT, THIS WOULD BE THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2010 AND THE FIRST TIME ON DRY ROAD. THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR MY VEHICLE SAY THAT IT ONLY TAKES 126 FEET TO MAKE A STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND SOLD BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THEY WILL HOLD IT FOR ONLY 4 DAYS FOR INVESTIGATION. THE VEHICLE WAS RECALLED AND SERVICED FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA REGIONAL OFFICE ON 02/27/2014, BUT THEY WILL NOT DO AN INVESTIGATION. *TR
I WAS SKEPTICAL ABOUT THIS BRAKE OVERRIDE UNTIL THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME ON 3/5/2010. I WAS ON THE FREEWAY TRAVELING 50 MPH IN MODERATE TRAFFIC WHEN A CONSTRUCTION TRUCK DECIDED TO TURN INTO MY LANE. I GAVE IT A QUICK PUNCH TO AVOID A COLLISION WHEN I FELT MY RPM'S KEPT CLIMBING AS I WAS NO LONGER ON THE PEDAL. I PANICKED AND TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES TO NO RESPONSE, SO I TAPPED THE SHIFTER INTO NEUTRAL. AT THIS POINT MY CAR IS STILL ACCELERATING IN REDLINE. FINALLY, THE CAR SNAPS OUT OF IT AND I HAVE CONTROL AGAIN. I SLOW DOWN, SHIFT BACK INTO D AND CONTINUE MY COMMUTE TO SCHOOL. IN THE PAST, I HAVE NOTICED A FEW TIMES THERE HAVE BEEN A SLIGHT LUNGE IN ACCELERATION JUST AFTER THE TRANSMISSION SWITCHES GEARS. I LOVE MY TACOMA. I HAVE BEEN IN DENIAL AND HAVE BEEN HOPING, WISHING THAT THERE ISN'T A PROBLEM. BUT FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY PASSENGERS, I AM GOING TO MAKE SURE THIS PROBLEM IS NOTED BEFORE ANYONE ONE GETS HURT. I WOULD HATE FOR ANYTHING SERIOUS TO HAPPEN AND LEAVE PEOPLE WONDERING. BRAKING IS TOO SLOW. WHEN STOPPING UNDER DRY CONDITIONS THIS VEHICLE TAKES TOO LONG TO STOP. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED. DEALER STATED THAT WAS 'NORMAL' FOR ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEMS. I HAD AN ACCIDENT LAST AUGUST WHILE DRIVING MY TOYOTA TACOMA PRERUNNER. I WAS SLOWING DOWN IN A TURN LANE AND I COULD NOT GET THE TRUCK TO STOP WHICH MADE ME CONTINUE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. AFTER READING A NEWS ARTICLE ABOUT UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IN 2005 -07 TACOMA PICKUPS, I WAS REMINDED OF AN INCIDENT I HAD A FEW MONTHS BACK. INDEED MY TACOMA SURGED WHEN I HIT THE BRAKE. WHEN THIS HAPPENED, I REALIZED MY FOOT WAS ON BOTH THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR. I HAD TO PICK UP MY FOOT AND RE-APPLY THE BRAKE. THIS SHOULD INDEED BE REMINDED, FOR IT IS A REAL PROBLEM. IT IS EASY A THE DRIVER TO ASSUME THAT THEY ARE ONLY PRESSING THE BRAKE BECAUSE THE BRAKE PEDAL REQUIRES MORE PRESSURE THAN THE ACCELERATOR. HE THEN DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP AND CONTINUED TO MOVE IN REVERSE. THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE. A PASSENGER WAS INJURED. THE AMBULANCE WAS NOT CALLED TO THE SCENE AND THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AND A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED. AT THIS TIME, THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE IS STILL UNKNOWN. THE SPEED WAS UNKNOWN AS WELL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 46,000.

I RECENTLY OPENED A CORPORATE CASE AGAINST THE TOYOTA OF STUART DEALERSHIP. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST INCIDENT THAT I HAVE HAD WITH THEM, BUT THIS IS THE MOST RECENT. ON JULY 26, 2006, I NOTICED SOME GREASE ALL INSIDE THE RIM OF MY TIRE. I BROUGHT THE TRUCK INTO THE DEALERSHIP. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO TRY AND EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD, WE KNOW WHAT IT IS, WE WILL ORDER THE REAR SEALS AND CALL YOU WHEN THEY COME IN. NO ONE LOOKED AT MY VEHICLE!!! I WAS TOLD TO LEAVE AND I WOULD GET A PHONE CALL. ON JULY 27, 2006 AT 10:30 AM WHILE IN A LEFT HAND TURN, I APPLIED THE BRAKE LIGHTLY AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. THE TRUCK VERY QUICKLY SPUN AROUND AND BACKWARDS INTO A GUARD RAIL. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE TRUCK BACK TO THEM. THEY ASSURED ME THAT BECAUSE OF THE GREASE ON THE WHEEL AND BEING MADE TO THINK THAT IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE, THAT THE DEALERSHIP WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENED, FORTUNATELY ON A ROAD WITH MINIMAL TRAFFIC, NOT ON I-95. I OFTEN THINK ABOUT WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY INJURED MYSELF, OR SOMEONE ELSE. I COULD HAVE HAD MY 5 YEAR OLD IN MY VEHICLE GOING TO CAMP. ANYTHING SERIOUS COULD HAVE HAPPENED. FORTUNATELY, IT DID NOT. AFTER BRINGING THE TRUCK IN AND MANY PHONE CALLS AND TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD AFTER TWO WEEKS, BY THE MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP THAT I NEEDED TO CALL MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THIS WAS SO MY INSURANCE WOULD PAY FOR THE DAMAGES. THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG. I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR EVEN WORSE! IF THEY WOULD HAVE CHECKED MY VEHICLE, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN DEEMED UNFIT TO DRIVE. I AM NOT A MECHANIC. NOW THE DEALERSHIP WANTS MY $500.00 DEDUCTIBLE PAYMENT. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO BE SERVICED FOR THE LAST INCIDENT WHERE THE FRONT BRAKES FAILED, THE DEALERSHIP TECHNICIAN SAID THE LOSS WAS DUE TO AN AFTER-MARKET SECURITY/REMOTE SYSTEM THAT I HAD INSTALLED BY A TIDY CAR. THEY SUGGESTED I HAVE THIS DISCONNECTED. AFTER HAVING THE SYSTEM DISCONNECTED I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL AUTOMATIC CAR WASH. WHEN LEAVING THE CAR WASH I EXPERIENCES LOSS OF BRAKES AS I PULLED INTO TRAFFIC. THIRD TIME I'VE LOST BRAKES WHEN ROTORS GOT WET.*AK
DURING RECENT COLD WINTER WEATHER, HAD COUPLE INCIDENTS WHERE BRAKES APPEARED TO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY ON MODERATE ICE/SLUSHY ROAD CONDITION AND THIS CAUSED ON ONE OCCASION TO RUN THROUGH INTERSECTION DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE BEING FORTUNATE THAT NO OTHER TRAFFIC WAS PRESENT AT THE TIME. THE SECOND OCCURRED AFTER GOING THROUGH A CAR WASH IN TEMPERATURE OF 39 DEGREES. AFTER GOING THROUGH THE CAR WAS I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 5 MPH THROUGH A PARKING LOT TO PARK IN FRONT OF A CONVENIENCE STORE, THE TRUCK STUCK THE CURB, AND NEARLY STRUCK PROPANE TANKS STORED IN FRONT OF STORE. AFTER DRYING THE VEHICLE AND WAITING ABOUT 15 MINUTES I PROCEEDED TO THE INTERSECTION IN FRONT OF BUSINESS AND BRAKES FAILED AGAIN. *NM

DEALER TESTED IT, AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE, BUT DID NOTE THAT THE BRAKE PRESSURE WAS WEAK, AND THE PEDAL HAD TO BE PUT TO THE FLOOR TO STOP. BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE THEY COULD NOT REPAIR. *AK
I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA 4 DOOR AND EVER SINCE TAKING IT OFF THE LOT 5 DAYS AGO, WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES IN ANY WEATHER, ON ANY SURFACE OF ROAD, I GET A THUMPING IN THE PEDAL AND THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES TO STOP. IT GETS WORSE WITH MORE PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKES. THE FRONT END SEEMS TO BOUNCE, AND FEELS LIKE IT WILL GO OUT OF CONTROL. THE TRUCK HAS 230 MILES ON IT, I WILL BE CALLING THE DEALER TODAY.

FOUND OUT LAST WEEK, THAT A LADY ON A TEST DRIVE HAD A CAR SURGE THROUGH THE SHOWROOM WINDOW AT SAME DEALERSHIP. I HAVE NO FAITH THAT THE VEHICLE WON'T DO THIS AGAIN. I AM REFUSING TO PICK VEHICLE UP AT DEALERSHIP, EVEN THOUGH I PAID CASH.
