THE PARK BRAKE SYSTEM USES CABLES TO EXPAND THE REAR BRAKE SHOES. THE SHOES ARE EXPANDED USING A BELLCRANK AND BRACKET. WHEN THE PARK BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THE CABLE PULLS THE BELLCRANK AND EXPANDS THE SHOES. THE BELLCRANK AND BRACKET USE A PIVOT PIN. THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY - BELLCRANK, BRACKET AND PIN SUFFER EXTRAORDINARY RUST. THE RUST CAUSES THE PARK BRAKE TO FAIL TO RELEASE. THE REAR BRAKES DRAG, AND CAUSE: * PREMATURE WEAR OF REAR BRAKES * LOSS OF FUEL ECONOMY * SHUTTER AND SHAKING FROM THE REAR * AVOIDING USE OF PARK BRAKE SYSTEM TO AVOID THE PROBLEM, FOLKS DON'T USE THE PARK BRAKE. NONE OF THE DRIVERS OF OUR TOYOTA TUNDRA USES THE PARK BRAKE BECAUSE OF THE THE PROBLEMS IT CAUSES. THAT'S A SAFETY ISSUE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA TUNDRAS. THE LAST 3 VEHICLES I'VE OWNED HAVE HAD TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO BRAKE LINE FAILURE/ WITH VEHICLES LASTING LONGER AND SALT TREATING FOR WINTER PRECIPITATION, STAINLESS SHOULD BE REQUIRED. THE MOST RECENT WAS A TOYOTA TUNDRA. PREVIOUSLY AN EXPEDITION AND A LEXUS RX300
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED BUT FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE AS THE BRAKE BARRIER WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE DRIVE UPHILL AND WHEN THE VEHICLES STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS, HE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 175,000.
GOT IN TRUCK, STARTED IT, BRAKE LIGHT REMAINED ON. WHILE DRIVING, BRAKES WERE SOFT. CHECKED BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR, LOW ON FLUID. ADDED BRAKE FLUID, PUMPED BRAKES- PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. FLUID UNDER RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. HAD TRUCK TAKEN TO MY MECHANIC - BRAKE LINE RUSTED OUT, ALL ALL OTHER LINES RUSTED AS WELL. RECOMMENDED ALL GET REPLACED AS A SAFETY ISSUE. NOT ONLY RUST ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE- WAS IN THE TOYOTA CHASSIS RECALL- CHASSIS COATED WITH RUST INHIBITOR. DIFFERENTIAL RUSTED OUT- REPLACED AT MY COST. TOYOTA TOOK NO RESPONSIBILITY. ALSO REPLACED THE HOOD RELEASE CABLE, EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE, AS WELL AS THE TWO CABLES SUPPORTING THE TAILGATE- ALL RUSTED OUT. REAR BUMPER RUSTED OUT TOO.
I PULLED MY TRUCK OUT OF THE GARAGE (IT WAS BACKED IN) AND WHEN I APPROACHED THE STREET APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK BARELY STOPPED BEFORE ENTERING THE STREET. (DRIVEWAY WAS LUCKILY ON FLAT TERRAIN) I CHECKED THE BRAKE RESERVOIR AND IT WAS ALMOST EMPTY. FILLED UP RESERVOIR, PUMPED BRAKES TO GET STIFF PEDAL AND CHECKED FOR LEAKS. COULD FIND NONE SO DROVE TRUCK ON ABOUT 5 MILE ROUNDTRIP. PULLED TRUCK OUT THE NEXT DAY AND RESERVOIR WAS AGAIN EMPTY BUT COULD FIND NO FLUID ON CONCRETE IN GARAGE. FILLED RESERVOIR & BROUGHT TO MY MECHANIC. HE FOUND THAT THE BOOSTER PUMP WAS LEAKING INTO THE MASTER CYLINDER WHICH WAS WHY THERE WAS NOT FLUID ON THE CONCRETE. HE HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE UNIT SINCE TOYOTA DOES NOT SELL THE COMPONENTS SEPARATELY. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES. THE BRAKES HAD WORKED PERFECTLY FINE THE PREVIOUS TIME THE TRUCK WAS DRIVEN. IN FACT IT WAS DRIVEN OVER 250 MILES ON A HUNTING TRIP THROUGH ROADS THAT RAN ALONG CLIFFS. IF THE BRAKES HAD SUDDENLY FAILED JUST 4 DAYS EARLIER, SOMEONE COULD HAVE DIED. *TR
BRAKE FLUID LOW-TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER SAID MASTER CYLINDER WAS LEAKING ONTO VACUUM PACK THUS BOTH HAD TO BE REPLACED, AN EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE REPAIR THAT SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY ON A LOW-MILEAGE VEHICLE. *JS
I GOT INTO TRUCK TO DRIVE AND HAD NO BRAKES. THEY HAD "GONE" OUT OVERNIGHT. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO DEALER AND WE FOUND OUT THAT A BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED OUT. LESS THAN THREE MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENDED AGAIN. NOW IT IS AN ADDITIONAL TWO LINES THAT HAVE RUSTED OUT. TOYOTA IS TELLING US THAT ITS NORMAL AND NOT UNEXPECTED FOR THIS TO HAPPEN WITH A TRUCK THAT HAS ALMOST 50,000 MILES ON IT. IN ADDITION, SINCE THERE ARE SEVERAL BRAKE LINES ON THE TRUCK, THE OTHERS COULD GO AT ANY TIME. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFELY HAZARD AS THE BRAKES COULD STOP WORKING AT ANYTIME THE TRUCK IS DRIVEN.
MALFUNCTIONING BRAKE SENSORS ON 2005 TUNDRA USES ABS TO OVERRIDE DRIVER'S BRAKING BELOW 10 MPH. THE DEFECT IS THAT "ABS" LIGHT DOES NOT APPEAR ON DASH TO INFORM THE DRIVER THAT HE DOES NOT HAVE FULL BRAKING AUTHORITY OVER THE VEHICLE WHEN THE ABS KICKS IN. THE TOYOTA DEALER HAD DAMAGED THE BRAKE SENSOR WHILE REPLACING THE REAR AXLE BEARINGS. I DROVE THE SERVICE MANAGER TO WITNESS THE LOSS OF BRAKING CONTROL. THE BRAKE SENSOR WAS REPLACED AND PROBLEMS SOLVED. BACK TO THE PROBLEM. I OVER SHOT A STOP LINE BY A FEW FEET IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. LUCKILY, I WAS THE FIRST ONE AT THE RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ABS KICKED IN, BUT ABS LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE. I THOUGHT THE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS RECALIBRATING ITSELF (WHO KNOWS HOW ALL THESE ONBOARD COMPUTERS OPERATE THESE DAYS), BUT THE ABS WAS KICKING IN. *TR

TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT, SHE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE WAS UNRESPONSIVE AND DID NOT SLOW DOWN. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE OTHER VEHICLE. THERE WERE TWO PEOPLE INJURED. THE POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE INSURANCE COMPANYS AUTOMOTIVE BODY SHOP FOR INSPECTION WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 74,645.
I HAVE EXPERIENCED FLOOR MAT ENTANGLEMENT ISSUES AND UNCOMMANDED ACCELERATIONS WITH MY 2005 TUNDRA DOUBLE CAB. I ALSO HAVE EXPERIENCED A CLUNKING SOUND IN MY BRAKES/FRONT END WHEN I SHIFT INTO REVERSE AND THEN APPLY THE BRAKES. THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME ALL OF THESE ISSUES ARE NORMAL WHICH ACCORDING TO THE RECALLS FOR OTHER MODEL YEARS THEY ARE CLEARLY NOT NORMAL. CAN THE 05 TUNDRAS BE ADDED TO THE CURRENT RECALLS AND CAN THE BRAKE ISSUE BE ADDRESSED? *TR
TOYOTA TUNDRA 2005 - WHEN BRAKING THE FRONT END SHUDDERS AND MOVES BACK AND FORTH. WHEN FRONT BRAKING SYSTEM WAS INSPECTED THE ROTORS HAD WARPED. TOYOTA ISSUED A 2005 REPAIR NOTIFICATION THAT BRAKE ROTORS WERE WARPING BUT DID NOT POSE A SAFETY PROBLEM. TOYOTA RECOMMENDED REPAIRS REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE ROTORS, CALIPERS, AND BRAKE PADS. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS WILL RESOLVE THE PROBLEM PER THE REPAIR NOTIFICATION. MY VEHICLE CONTINUES TO SHUDDER WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES WITH POTENTIAL LOSS OF CONTROL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I HAVE NOT HAD THE RECOMMENDED REPAIRS DONE SINCE THE ESTIMATED COST IS $2200 PER MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. *TR

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO HAVE THE BRAKES SERVICED AND THE LOCAL MECHANIC COULD NOT FIND A ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES. ALSO THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR FLOW BUTTON THAT CONTROLS THE AIR INSIDE THE VEHICLE IS MALFUNCTIONING. THE CONTACT FEELS THIS VEHICLE HAS A SERIOUS ELECTRICAL ISSUE AND NEEDS TO LOOKED AT BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE 6,000.
EVERYTIME I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT OR SIGN, THE BRAKES WOULD LOSE PRESSURE AND THEN THE CAR STARTS GOING THROUGH THE LIGHT, WHILE I AM STILL HOLDING THE BRAKES. THE WOULD ALSO LOSE PRESSURE TO WHERE I COULD NOT STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF A HOT DAY. PROBLEM WAS CONSISTENT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING ON THE WAY TO WORK. TOOK IT TO TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT AT FIRST. THEY HAD ME REPLACE THE BRAKE PADS, AND ROTORS AND BLEED THE LINES NUMEROUS TIMES. THIS STILL DID NOT WORK AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW MASTER CYLINDER/BRAKE BOOSTER. THIS ASSEMBLY IS ALL IN ONE SO THE WHOLE UNIT HAD TO BE REPLACED COSTING OVER $2,000 FOR THE PARTS NOT INCLUDING LABOR. THE TRUCK IS A 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH ONLY 60,500. THEY TOLD ME I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND HAD TO PAY THE COST BECAUSE THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS FAILURE BEFORE. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA. I WAS CARRYING A LOAD TO THE JUNK YARD AND AFTER A FEW STOPS MY BRAKES STARTING PULSING AND STOPPING CORRECTLY BECAME DANGEROUS. I SUSPECT THE ROTORS GOT TOO HOT FROM THE LOAD. THIS IS A FULL SIZE TRUCK AND THE BRAKES APPEAR TO BE TOO SMALL TO HANDLE THE BRAKING REQUIRED. THE BRAKES AND ROTORS WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS A POOR DESIGN AND A SAFETY PROBLEM. FORTUNATELY NO ONE HAS BEEN INJURED YET.

WHILE TRYING TO STOP FROM 45 MPH, THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATED ON A CLEAN DRY ROAD AND THE BRAKES FAILED TO ACTIVATE AT ALL. THE PEDAL DID NOT GO TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK WOULD NOT STOP. AFTER COASTING TO A STOP, THE BRAKES STARTED WORKING NORMALLY. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER, THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG AND THE ABS SYSTEM DID NOT REPORT AN ERROR. *JB

BRAKES FEEL INCONSISTENT. LAST MONTH ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON WHOLE DAY. NEXT DAY LIGHT WENT OFF. INTERNET SEARCH SAYS MANY 2005 TUNDRA OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING REAR BRAKE CALIPER DEFECT. THIS CAUSES FRONT BRAKES TO PREMATURELY WEAR-OUT.
