TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING SYSTEM. PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WHEN LEAVING A STORE PARKING LOT. WAS ABLE TO STOP VEHICLE BY USING EMERGENCY BRAKE. NOTICED A RUPTURED SOLID BRAKE LINE UNDER DRIVERS SIDE RUNNING TOWARDS REAR OF VEHICLE. ALL BRAKE FLUID WAS GONE FROM MASTER CYLINDER WHEN CHECKED. ALSO NOTED A LOT OF CORROSION ON FRAME, BRAKE LINES, AND OTHER PARTS OF UNDERCARRIAGE. FRAME WAS PREVIOUSLY COATED AS PART OF RECALL SEVERAL YEARS AGO. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN WINSTON-SALEM, NC. HAD TO HAVE TWO SOLID BRAKE LINES REPLACED ALONG WITH REAR BRAKE SHOES AND DRUMS. COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED IF THIS HAPPENED AT SPEED OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC.

THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT BECAME STUCK TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT DESCRIBED THE FAILURE AS A COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKE FUNCTION. IN AN EFFORT TO AVOID A CRASH, THE VEHICLE WAS DOWNSHIFTED TO THIRD GEAR AND THEN SECOND GEAR TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DROVE TO TOYOTA KNOXVILLE (10415 PARKSIDE DRIVE, KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE 37922, (865) 312-6618) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE LINES FAILED. THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKE LINES WERE REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, THE FUEL TANK BRACKET WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH CASE NUMBER: 1808302087. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 117,000.

WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT ON DASH, NO INDICATION THAT BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY (TOYOTA PART NUMBER 470500C03) HAD FAILED OR WAS FAILING. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND SHOWED DIAGNOSTIC CODES C0200,215 AND 1223. DEALER CONFIRMED NO WARNING LIGHTS TO INDICATE THIS CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE. UNDER DIFFERENT TRAFFIC OR DRIVING CONDITIONS, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS OR FATAL EVENT. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED ONLY BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED NEW, AT EVERY RECOMMENDED INTERVAL, AND NEVER MISSED ANY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND REPEATEDLY ENGAGED THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WHENEVER THE TEMPERATURE WAS COLD AND THE ROAD SURFACE WAS WET, ENGAGING THE BRAKES RESULTED IN THE VEHICLE SPINNING UNCONTROLLABLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE DEALER STATED THAT A VEHICLE WITHOUT AN ENGINE BRAKE SHUT OFF SWITCH WAS UNSAFE IN THE WINTER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT REPLACE THE ENGINE BRAKE OR SUPPLY A SHUT OFF SWITCH DUE TO THE LABOR. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 49,000.
I HAD BORROWED MY IN-LAWS TOYOTA TUNDRA WHILE ON VACATION. I HAD PREVIOUSLY TRAVELED DOWN A STREET TO AN INTERSECTION TO GO TO A BANK WHILE MY WIFE WAS VISITING FRIEND WITH NO ISSUES. CAME BACK 1/2 HOUR LATER THROUGH SAME INTERSECTION, AND THE I HIT THE BRAKE TO STOP FOR THE STOP SIGN AT THE INTERSECTION AND THE VEHICLE KEPT PROPELLING FORWARD. WHILE I WAS STANDING ON THE BRAKE, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WERE ENGAGED AND THE VEHICLE KEPT BEING PROPELLED INTO THE INTERSECTION, WHERE I RAN INTO AN ARMORED VAN. THE REAR BRAKES WERE NOT ACTIVATING AUTOMATICALLY TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF OF THE FRONT BRAKES. THE DEALER IS AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT THEY COULD ONLY ADJUST THE REAR BRAKING SYSTEM MANUALLY. MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED A 2006 TOYOTA TUNDRA ACCESS CAB ON 11/25/06 AT TOYOTA OF FORT WORTH TEXAS . LESS THAN 6 DAYS LATER, WE WERE DRIVING HOME ON A STREET THAT LEADS TO OUR HOUSE,LESS THAN A MILE, WE HAVE BEEN TRAVELING THIS ROAD FOR AT LEAST 15 YEARS. LTR FROM (TX) REPORTING PROBLEMS WITH HIS 2006 TUNDRA MOTOR VEHICLE. *TS THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS A PROBLEM DOWN SHIFTING 2 GEARS ON MINOR GRADE FOR NO REASON, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO REV TO OVER 4000 RPMS. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO OVERDRIVE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. THE BRAKE WILL FADE WHILE SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE STOPPING DISTANCE ON THE VEHICLE WAS MUCH LONGER THAN ANY OTHER VEHICLE THE CONSUMER HAD DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS GETTING VERY POOR GAS MILEAGE. THERE WAS AN ODOR FROM THE AIR CONDITION. THE TIRE SENSOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED, BUT IT WAS RESOLVED.
