MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO REIMBURSE ME FOR WORK DONE FOR A MANUFACTURER RECALL NOT PERFORMED AT A DEALERSHIP,EVEN THOUGH CAR COULD NOT BE DRIVEN THERE DUE TO RECALL DEFECT AND MECHANIC CAME TO MY HOUSE TO REPAIR THE DEFECT WITH AN AUTHORIZED MANUFACTURERS PART
WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AND MY SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOY FOR NO REASON. I DID NOT HIT ANYTHING THERE IS NO DAMAGE DONE TO MY CAR NOR BEEN IN A ACCIDENT. WENT TO VW SOUTHERN STATES AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR ONLY HAS A 50,000 MILE WARRANTY AND THAT I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE CAR TO GET FIXED. ABOUT 3,000 DOLLARS HE SAID..... *TR
2002 JETTA VR6. TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) BECAME FAULTY AFTER MIL LIGHT TURNED ON FOR A EMISSION RELATED ISSUE COVERED BY A RECALL. TECHNICIANS FAILED TO IDENTIFY THE FAULTY TCM AFTER FOUR TRIP TO THE SHOP. LAST TRIP I SHOWED THEM A TSB RELATED TO THE TCM AND NOW THEY AGREE THAT THE MODUAL IS FAULTY. WORST PART IS IT DESTROYED THE TRANSMISSION. THE CAR HAS BEEN HARD TO CONTROL IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AS SHIFTING IS NOT SMOOTH BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEARS. CAR HAS INITIAL NO ACCELERATION/POWER FOLLOWED BY FAST JERKING SHIFT INTO THE 3RD GEAR WITH HIGH ACCELERATION. CAR MAYBE OUT OF WARRANTY BUT IDENTIFYING THIS ISSUE IS NOT EASY FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIANS AND THIS PART WHEN IT FAILS LEAVE THE CAR IN A STATE THAT IS HARD TO CONTROL OR MANAGE. DEALER ONLY OFFERED TO CREDIT THIS LAST DIAGNOSTIC FEE TOWARDS THE $4700 REPAIR WHICH NOW INCLUDE NOT JUST THE TMC MODULE BUT ALSO THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION. THIS IS AFTER HAVING SPENT CLOSE TO $1,000 TRYING TO IDENTIFY AND FIX THIS ISSUE. NOT SURE IF IT WAS RELATED TO THE MIL LIGHT ISSUE COVERED BY THE RECALL BUT SINCE THEN THE TMC HAD NOT WORKED CORRECTLY. *TR

THE FIRST SET OF REPAIRS WAS ON 3/2007 AT 64,332 MI CHECK ENGINE LIGHT MULITPLE MISFIRES: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 REPLACED IGNITION COILS COST: $200.11 SECOND REPAIR TOOK PLACE IN APRIL OF 2007 TOOK CAR IN FOR RECALL - REPLACEMENT OF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH CHECK ENGLINE LIGHT WAS BACK ON - REPLACED TEMP. SENSOR COST: $199.33 CAR WAS JERKING INTO GEAR, DOWNSHIFTING HARD AND SLUGGISH. BROUGHT CAR INTO DEALSERHSIP IN APRIL 2008 WORN STRUT BRUSHINGS NEEDS REAR PADS NEEDS ROTORS CHECK ENGLINE LIGHT ON AGAIN NEEDS NEW COILS AGAIN SPARK PLUGS TEMP SENSOR AGAIN NEW T-STAT FANS NOT WORKING HOSES UNDER INTAKE BROKEN NEEDS NEW TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS COST: $149.21 ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR: $6,500.00. *TR
AT ABOUT 65,000 MILES MY CAR WOULD SOMETIMES GET STUCK IN PARK. IT FELT LIKE I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE WITH THE PARKING BRAKE ON. THEN IT STOPPED GOING IN REVERSE. THE SHOPS IN MY AREA DON'T WORK ON VW'S DUE TO THEIR COMPLICATED TRANS. THE DEALER TOLD ME THEY DON'T REPAIR ANY TRANSMISSIONS, THAT THEY CAN ONLY REPLACE IT AT A COST OF $4500. I TOOK A LOAN FROM MY 401K, PAID IT THINKING IT WOULD LAST, AND SURE ENOUGH THIS ONE IS GOING TOO! IT ONLY HAD A WARRANTY OF 12000 MILES... SEEMS FISHY SINCE IT'S NEW. NEVER WILL I BUY A VW AGAIN. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 10 MPH IN THE DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE DROVE VERY ROUGHLY AND FELT AS IF IT WOULD SHUT OFF. MINUTES LATER, THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE COIL FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND WORKED FINE FOR A MONTH BEFORE THE FAILURE RECURRED. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC AND HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED FOR A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WORKED NORMALLY TEMPORARILY, BUT THREE WEEKS LATER, THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE ENGINE COIL FAILED AGAIN AND THEY REPLACED IT WITH A DIFFERENT PART. SINCE THE MOST RECENT REPAIR, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN WORKING PROPERLY. THE CONTACT RESEARCHED THE FAILURE AND DISCOVERED NUMEROUS CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME VEHICLE, WHO ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS SAME FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 121,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 122,000.
RELATED TO HTSA 10024548. 2002 JETTA STALLS AND HAS TRANSMISSION ISSUES BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEARS WHICH MAKES CONTROLLING THE CAR DIFFICULT WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOPPED POSITION. TOOK THIS ISSUE TO DEALER BUT THEY RECOMMENDED OTHER SERVICE WHICH IS NOT NEEDED. THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND THEN THE FAST GEAR SHIFT FROM 2ND TO 3RD CAN BE A REAL ISSUE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AS IT IS HARD TO CONTROL THE CAR. LUCKY NO ACCIDENTS BUT A FEW CLOSE CALLS INCLUDING MERGING INTO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. HAVE TO USE VERY LOW SPEEDS TO AVOID THIS HARD SHIFTING ISSUE. *TR
ON MY 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI, THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT HEATER HAS BURNED A HOLE THROUGH THE SEAT PADDING, SEAT COVER AND THE JACKET I WAS WEARING. I HAVE SEEN REPORTS OF SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THE JETTAS ON VARIOUS WEBSITE FORUMS. *TR
I INADVERTENTLY HIT A POT HOLE. THE POT HOLE WAS PROBABLY A LITTLE DEEPER THAN MOST. THE DRIVER'S SIDE-CURTAIN AIRBAG, THE SEAT SIDE AIRBAG AND THE SEATBELT TENSIONER WERE DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE CAR. THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATE DANGER TO ME. I DID NOT LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR EVEN WITH THE STARTLING DEPLOYMENT OF THE SAFETY SYSTEMS. I WAS TOLD BY THE GUY IN ONE OF THE BODY SHOPS THAT I WENT TO TO GET ESTIMATES THAT VWS AND BMWS ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR "TOUCHY" AIRBAG SYSTEMS. I DO NOT THINK THAT IT IS REASONABLE TO HAVE A $2700 REPAIR BILL, THE INCONVENIENCE OF ALL OF THE LEGWORK TO GET MY CAR FIXED OR THE TEMPORARY NON-FUNCTIONING OF MY CAR'S SAFETY SYSTEM JUST FROM HITTING A POT HOLE! I AM WORKING ON A CLAIM AND HAVE NOT YET HAD THE CAR REPAIRED. PARTS LISTED AS BEING NECESSARY TO REPLACE ARE: SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG, SEAT SIDE AIRBAG, SEAT BELT/TENSIONER ASSEMBLY, SEAT COVER, A-PILLAR TRIM, HEADLINER, SAIL PANEL TRIM, AIRBAG SENSOR AND AIRBAG CONTROL MODULE. ALSO, THE CAR WILL NEED TO BE PLUGGED INTO A COMPUTER ANALYZER IN ORDER THAT THE AIRBAG CODES BE RESET. *TR

I HAVE A 2002 JETTA GLS TDI. I AM CONSTANTLY REPLACING GLOW PLUGS. HAVE A COOLANT TEMP CODE READING FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND ALSO FUEL INJECTION PUMP, WHICH IS PROBABLY WHAT IS CAUSING GLOW PLUGS TO GO BAD. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT ABOUT 30 MPH THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS AND THE SEAT AIRBAGS WRONGFULLY DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO REASON WHATSOEVER FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. *TR
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE. REPORTED 15 FAULTS ON COMPUTER WHICH WENT ON DETECTED TWO MONTHS PRIOR. NO WARNING SIGNAL CAME ON TO NOTIFY DRIVER OF ENGINE PROBLEM. *TR
AS I ENTERED A PARKING GARAGE AND PICKED UP A PARKING TICKET MY PASSENGER SIDE REAR TIRE HIT THE CURB AND MY PASSENGER SIDE SEAT AND CURTAIN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I JUST GOT MY PARKING TICKET AND WAS TURNING FROM A DEAD STOP SO I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN TRAVELING MORE THAN 2 MILES PER HOUR. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS AN ACCIDENT BUT THERE IS NOT DAMAGE TO THE TIRE OR WHEEL OTHER THAN A SCUFF MARK ON THE TIRE WHERE IT RUBBED ON THE CURB. I HAVE CONTACED VW OF AMERICA AND THE INITIAL RESPONSE IS THAT THEY CONSIDER IT AN ACCIDENT NOT A MECHANICAL FAILURE. THE INITIAL REPSONSE FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY IS THAT IT IS A MECHANICAL FAILURE AND VW IS AT FAULT. BASED ON RESEARCH, MORE THAN 500 SIMILAR INCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO THE NHTSA, AND IT IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF THE POPULATION REPORT PROBLEMS TO THE NHTSA. THE 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA WAS INVOLVED IN A ACCIDENT AND NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE CAR CONTAINS A LOT OF AIR BAGS. FRONT PASSENGER AND DRIVER AND SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED IN THE CRASH EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS TOTALED. THE CAR HAD BEEN HIT FROM THE SIDE AND THEN THE CAR HIT A CONCRETE BARRIER FROM THE FRONT AFTER THE CAR HAD SPUN. *TR
I OWN A 2002 VW JETTA 1.8T. OVER THE WINTER MY ABS SYSTEM DID NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY AT ALL! SOMETIMES IT WOULD WORK AND SOMETIMES IT WOULDN'T. NOW THAT IT IS WARMER OUT IT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL! ABS LIGHT, TRACTION LIGHT, AND BLINKING BRAKE LIGHT NOW ILLUMINATE MY DASHBOARD. I HAVE READ THAT THIS IS A FAULTY ABS CONTROL UNIT WHICH MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH. I SIMPLY DON'T HAVE 1,500 DOLLARS TO FIX SOMETHING LIKE THIS BUT IT WOULD BE NICE TO BE IN CONTROL OF MY CAR ON SNOWY WISCONSIN ROADS. *TR
MY 2002 VW JETTA EXPERIENCED A RECALL PROBLEM (N4, BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH) AND I FIXED IT THROUGH A NEAREST MECHANIC BECAUSE 1) THE CLOSEST VW DEALER IS 100 MILE AWAY 2) I WAS SCARE TO DRIVE 100 MILE ON HIGHWAY WITHOUT A PROPER BRAKE LIGHT. HOWEVER, VW REFUSED TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE REPAIRS SINCE I FIXED IT THROUGH AN INDEPENDENT FACILITY. I AM SO SAD AND DISAPPOINTED THAT VW IS NOT CONSIDERING DIVERS LIFE AND SAFETY SERIOUSLY AND IS WILLING TO PUSH US TO DRIVE HUNDRED MILES WITH A RECALLED CAR WITHOUT A BRAKE LIGHT. *TR
VEHICLE IS A 2002 TDI JETTA GLS 4 DOOR SEDAN MANUAL TRANSMISSION. AT ABOUT 29,000 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITH AND OBD 2 CODE OF (P0128 COOLANT THERMOSTAT-COOLANT TEMPERATURE BELOW THERMOSTAT REGULATING TEMPERATURE). TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALER WHICH REPLACED THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR AND COOLANT FLUID. THIS DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM WHICH RECURRED. I THEN DID RESEARCH AND FOUND VW TECH BULLETIN 4-04 WHICH ADDRESSES THIS PROBLEM AND IS INTENDED TO GUIDE TECHNICIAN TROUBLESHOOTING. I FEEL THIS IS EITHER A PARTS DESIGN DEFECT, ENGINEERING FLAW, OR VEHICLE WIRING ASSEMBLY DEFECT. IT IS NOT A NORMAL MAINTENANCE OR WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE. DEALER IS ATTEMPTING SECOND ROUND OF TROUBLESHOOTING FOR THIS PROBLEM. REQUEST NHTSA ASSESS OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND PURSUE A RECALL FOR THIS VW KNOWN PROBLEM/DEFECT AS VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BUT THIS PROBLEM IS KNOWN TO OCCUR FOR THIS VEHICLE. *TR
CAR WILL SUDDENLY STOP WORKING. VW CORPORATE WILL NOT ADDRESS AS THE CAR HAS HAND MANY ISSUES AND IS NO LONGER IN WARRANTY. SPENT $2K WITH VW DEALER TO DIAGNOSE. APPEARS TO BE ELECTRICAL IN NATURE. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR SUDDENLY STOP RUNNING AND ALL ELECTRICAL STOPS BRING CAR TO A HALT. ISSUE BEGAN 9/07 AND DEALER HAS HAD CAR IN SHOP ABOUT 2 MONTHS IN TOTAL. *TR
I WAS DRIVING LESS THAN 10 MPH THROUGH A PARKING LOT, PULLING INTO A SPOT WHEN MY SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. I SAW THAT THERE IS AN EXISTING COMPLAINT (NHTSA ACTION NUMBER : PE04081) OUTLINING THIS EXACT PROBLEM. WHEN I GOT OUT OF MY CAR TO INSPECT I FOUND THAT I HAD HIT NOTHING. THERE WAS NO IMPACT, NOT EVEN A SCRATCH. THE REPAIR IS PENDING WITH MY LOCAL VW DEALER. I AM NOT YET SURE WHO WILL FINANCIALLY BE RESPONSIBLE. *TR
2002 VW JETTA VR6 2.8 EVER SINCE WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN SEPT. 07 WE HAVE A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THE CAR COMPLETELY DYING IN INTERSECTION OR IDLING WITH A/C ON OR JUST WHEN RUNNING. WHEN THIS OCCURS THE DASH RESETS AND CAR SHUTS OFF AND LOCKS UP. YOU HAVE TO TURN TO CAR OFF AND PUT IN PARK TO RESTART. VERY DANGEROUS FOR MY CHILDREN AND I TO TRAVEL ANYWHERE WHEN I DRIVE A HOUR TO WORK EACH DAY. I ALSO KNOW A PREVIOUS OWNER OF THE SAME YEAR CAR THE HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS AND HAD TO SELL BECAUSE AFTER THOUSANDS OF $ IT WAS NEVER ABLE TO BE REPAIRED. ALSO THE CAR FEELS LIKE TO TRANSMISSION IS GOING OUT. THIS CAR WAS PROMISED TO BE SAFE DEPENDABLE AND HAD BEEN NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. WE LUCKILY HAVE NOT HAD A ACCIDENT YET BUT SEVERAL VERY CLOSE CALLS. THE VW DEAL CANT SEEM TO FIND THE PROBLEM THEY INSIST THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING IT. THEY REPLACE THINGS AND NOTHING WORKS. BRAKE BOOSTER IS FAILING AFTER USE IN TRAFFIC. THE BRAKE PEDAL SLOWLY SINKS AND WHEN LIGHTLY TAPPED, IT SLAMS TO THE FLOOR. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, A LOUD SUCTION CAN BE HEARD INSIDE THE CAR, AND THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED FULLY. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS AFTER BRAKES ARE USED SOME TIME, SAY IN A TRAFFIC JAM. THERE IS A SITE, TDICLUB.COM, WHICH HAS FORUMS WHERE MANY PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ON THEIR 2002 MODEL YEAR VW JETTA. THE DANGER IS THAT THE BRAKES COME ON FULLY, WHICH STARTLES NOT ONLY THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER(S), BUT THE VEHICLES THAT ARE FOLLOWING. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM (BRAKE BOOSTER FAILURE) BUT CAN BE REPLICATED IF THE BRAKES ARE USED HEAVILY. WHEN THE PROBLEM STARTS TO HAPPEN, IT WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE BRAKES ARE NOT USED FOR QUITE SOME TIME. ONCE THIS STARTED HAPPENING TODAY, VIRTUALLY EVERY OTHER APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES CAUSED THE SYMPTOMS ABOVE. THIS OCCURRED ABOUT SEVEN TIMES THIS DAY. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING INTERMITTENTLY FOR A FEW YEARS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, I HEARD A VERY LARGE "CRACK" SOUND AND FELT MY SEAT SHUDDER. THE SOUND AND IMPACT MADE ME THINK THAT SOMETHING HAD STRUCK THE CAR UNDER MY SEAT. HOWEVER, WHEN I RETURNED HOME, I DISCOVERED THAT A SPRING ATTACHED TO MY SEAT HAD DISLODGE. FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT ONE OF THE PLACES WHERE THE SPRING CONNECTED HAD BROKEN OFF - APPARENTLY METAL FATIGUE. THIS STRUCK ME ODD BECAUSE WHILE CLEANING MY CAR EARLIER IN THE SUMMER, I HAD NOTICED THAT A SPRING WAS LOOSE UNDER THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT SEAT AND ALSO FOUND THE NUB OF WHERE IT ATTACHED. I HAVE KEPT BOTH PIECES AND THE SPRINGS. I THINK THERE IS A STRUCTURAL DEFECT WITH THE PART. I AM NOT A VERY HEAVY PERSON - 180 LBS - SO I DOUBT I PUT THAT MUCH STRESS ON THE SEAT. I THINK THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ISSUE AND THAT IS WHY I AM REPORTING IT. WHEN THE SYSTEM FAILED I SWERVED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AS THE SOUND WAS INCREDIBLY UNNERVING. I ALSO NOW WONDER ABOUT THE SEATS STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY IF IT WERE INVOLVED IN A COLLISION.
I HAVE A 2002 VW JETTA GL 2.0. IT ONLY HAS 83,000 MILES ON IT AND THE TRANSMISSION IS ACTING UP ON IT ALREADY. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE ONLY SUGGESTION THEY COULD GIVE ME IS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION($3K - $6K) I HAVE READ THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH THE 2002 MODEL YEARS PERTAINING TO THE TRANSMISSION. MINE WON'T SHIFT FROM PARK INTO REVERSE, I HAVE TO GO FROM PARK TO DRIVE, LET IT SHIFT, THEN FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE, AND THAT SOMETIMES TAKES THREE OR FOUR TRIES. WHILE DRIVING IF I AM AT A STOP LIGHT, WHEN I BEGIN TO ACCELERATE, THERE IS A PAUSE BETWEEN WHEN I PRESS THE ACCELERATOR AND THE GIANT LUNGE FORWARD THE CAR MAKES AS IT SHIFTS INTO GEAR. IT ALSO SHIFTS VERY HARD BETWEEN ALL GEARS WHILE DRIVING. *JB
I PURCHASED MY DAUGHTER A BRAND NEW 2002 VW JETTA, AND MOST RECENTLY SHE HAS HAD SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH HER VEHICLE. THIS WAS HER1ST VEHICLE AND I TAUGHT HER THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR MAINT OF HER VEHICLE. BUT AS I STATED ABOVE IT APPEARS THAT HER EFFORTS HAVE BEEN FOR NOT. IN THE PAST 3 MONTHS THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE VW DEALERSHIP 3 XS, AND IT IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER, ALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, THE VEHCILE HARD JERKING WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE, THE VEHCILE TURNING OFF AT A STOP SIGN OR LIGHT AND WHEN SHE IS TOPPED IN A TURNING LANE - WHICH IS OF COURSE THE MOST DANGEROUS CONCERN OF MINE ESPECIALLY IF IT DIES OUT WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WE RECIEVED A CALL SAYING THEY NEEDED TO LOOK AT A DIAGNOSTIC OF THE TRANSMISSION WHICH OF COURSE WOULD BE AT A COST OF $330 REGARDLESS OF WHAT WAS FOUND! ( A VW RIP OFF ) & AS I SUSPECTED THE DIAGONISTIC CAME BACK REQUIRING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $3800 (WARRANTY EXP OCT 06), SHE HAS 60K+ MILES . I AM IN SHOCK I HAVE OWNED OVER10 BRAND NEW AUTOS IN MY LIFETIME, & HAVE NEVER HAD A TRANSMISSION REPLACED ALL EXCEEDING 85K MILES. I BEGAN EDUCATING MYSELF WHICH LED ME TO YOUR WEB SITE TO REVIEW EITHER RECALLS OR OTHER COMPAINTS & TO MY SURPRISE I FOUND A LARGE NUMBER OF THE SAME COMPLAINT . BUT IT APPEARS THAT IF THERE HAS BEEN NO INJURIES YET OR DEATHS THE NUMBER DOES NOT MAKE A DIFF. I AM REGISTERING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE MY NEXT ACTION WILL BE TO AN ATTORNEY, THE IDEA THAT I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MY CHILD IS INJURED OR POSSIBLY KILLED BEFORE THE NHTSA WILL CONSIDER THIS AS A PROBLEM IS AMAZING TO ME. *TR
NO EVENTS LEAD TO THIS PROBLEM. THE ORIGINAL BATTERY IN THE VEHICLE WAS CHANGED OUT DUE ITS AGE. OVER THE PAST 4 MONTHS I HAVE CHANGED OUT THE BATTERY TWICE. ON MORE THAN AT LEAST 20 DIFFERENT TIMES, I WOULD GO TO MY VEHICLE IN THE MORNING TO START IT UP AND THE BATTERY WOULD BE COMPLETELY DEAD. NO LIGHTS, RADIO OR ANY OTHER DEVICES WERE LEFT ON IN THE VEHICLE, TO DRAIN THE ENTIRE BATTERY TO NOTHING WITHIN THE SPAN OF 10-12 HOURS. I HAVE TAKEN IT THE AUTO SHOP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO HAVE A VOLTAGE TEST DONE ON THE BATTERY, ALTERNATOR AND STARTER WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS EVERY TIME FOR A PARASITIC DRAIN OF THE BATTERY. THE ALTERNATOR IS IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER AND DOES NOT NEED REPLACING. SO FAR THE HAS BEEN NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE OTHER THAN JUMP START THE VEHICLE. DURING THE 10 OR SO HOURS I AM WORK AND LEAVE FOR THE DAY, I HAVE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUES. IF THE VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVEN OVER THE WEEKEND, COME MONDAY MORNING IT IS DEAD. I HAVE JUST RECENTLY CHANGED OUT THE BATTERY AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH IT BUT YET ITS DEAD IF LEFT FOR MORE THAN 12 HOURS. *TR

I OWN A 2002 1.8T AUTOMATIC JETTA WITH 75000 MILES. YESTERDAY I WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. I USE THIS CAR FOR BASIC TRANSPORTATION, AND HAVE MAINTAINED REGULAR UPKEEP. I AM APPALLED THAT I HAVE TO SPEND $5,000 TO FIX A FAULTY TRANSMISSION. I HAVE BEEN DOING RESEARCH AND IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF JETTAS HAVE THIS PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY THE TURBOS. I OWN A 2002 JETTA 1.8T AND STARTED HAVING SOME INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH SHIFTING FROM PARK INTO REVERSE OR 1ST AND 2ND GEARS, PAUSING OR JERKING INTO GEAR. THE PROBLEM STARTED A COUPLE MONTHS AGO WHEN THE CAR HAD ABOUT 52,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BY ABOUT 5 MONTHS. THE PROBLEM BECAME INCREASINGLY FREQUENT AND I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER YESTERDAY AND WAS TOLD THAT I NEED A WHOLE NEW TRANSMISSION. THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION FLUID BUNT AND HA DEBRIS IN IT". I HAVE ALWAYS DONE THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ON THE VEHICLE , AT THE DEALERSHIP, NO LESS, AND HAVE NEVER ABUSED THE TRANSMISSION IN ANY WAY. THE CAR ONLY HAS 54,000 MILES ON IT! THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT THE DEALERSHIP CALLED VOLKSWAGEN AND STATED HE REALLY WENT TO BAT FOR ME ,AND THAT VOLKSWSGEN HAS AGREED TO COVER 65% OF THE REPAIR, WHICH IN THE RANGE OF $5,000+. SO I WILL STILL BE PAYING AT LEAST $1750.00 TO REPLACE A FAIRLY YOUNG TRANSMISSION. I FEEL VW MUST KNOW THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE TRANSMISSION TO EVEN OFFER TO PAY FOR PART OF THE REPAIR, AND JUDGING BY THE OTHER COMPLAINTS THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN READING OTHER COMPLAINTS AND IT SEEMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS PAINTED WITH A METALLIC PAINT THAT DISINTEGRATED WITH HIGH HEAT/TEMPERATURES AND THAT IT BROKE DOWN, FLAKES OFF AND DAMAGED THE TRANSMISSION. THIS HAS TO BE A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. *AK
I PURCHASED A 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA FOR MY DAUGHTER. IN AUGUST OF 2006 THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A VW DEALERSHIP FOR TRANSMISSION SERVICE. IN MAY OF 2007 THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR KEPT LOSING POWER WHEN DRIVING. WHEN PUT IN GEAR THE CAR WOULD SHAKE AND SHUT DOWN. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE VW DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THEY REPLACED A SEAL, TEMP SENDER AND SENDER FOR A TOTAL OF 427.62. MY DAUGHTER PICKED UP THE CAR AND WHEN DRIVING HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP AFTER THEY REPAIRED IT THE CAR SHUTTERED, THEN SLAMMED DOWN INTO A LOWER GEAR ALMOST CAUSING HER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY APPROVED HAVING IT TOWED BACK TO THEIR FACILITY FOR REPAIR. THEY THEN CHECKED THE CAR AGAIN AND STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR A COST OF $3800.00. THIS CAR HAS 57,000 MILES ON IT AND WHEN ORIGINALLY TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS ISSUE IT WAS 4 DAYS OUT OF WARRANTY. NOTE: WHEN THE CAR INITIALLY BROKE DOWN IT WAS STILL IN WARRANTY BUT I WAS OUT OF TOWN FOR WORK AND COULD NOT SET UP HAVING IT TOWED IN UNTIL I RETURNED HOME. THE DEALERSHIP WAS CALLED REGARDING THIS ISSUE PRIOR TO THE WARRANTY EXPIRATION. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND VW CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS. THEY STATED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ASSIST IN THIS REPAIR. THE VW DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THEY DID NOT SEE A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION WHEN THEY FIRST COMPLETED REPAIRS BUT SHE DID NOT EVEN GET 10 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE THE CAR SLAMMED DOWN INTO A LOW GEAR. *TR

I HAVE 2002 JETTA HAVING THE SAME ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. THE DOOR / LATCH SWITCH HAS A MALFUNCTION AND WON'T COME ON WHEN THE DOOR IS OPEN. THE DOME LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON AND THE LIGHT ON THE DOOR DOES NOT COME ON. WHICH CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF THE VEHICLE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND CAN'T SEE THE DOOR IS OPEN AT NIGHT. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS AS CAR STALLED AND CARS BEHIND WERE BEGINNING TO SPEED UP OR WHEN TRYING TO CROSS A BUSY ROAD AND MAKING A LEFT TURN. I HAD ABOUT $1000 OF SERVICE AT THE LOCAL VOLKSWAGEN DEALER IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. *AK

THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V584000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH); HOWEVER, A TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, BUT NOT THE HAZARD LIGHTS. THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
2002 JETTA TDI WAGON; I HAVE HAD 6 GLOW PLUGS REPLACED THEN TOLD THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS FOR A BAD GLOW PLUG HARNESS. DEALER IN BUFFALO TOLD ME THAT THE OEM HARNESS WAS MADE FROM INFERIOR MATERIALS AND MANY FAIL, BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED; NOW FACED WITH $150 PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE HARNESS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING THE CAR NORMALLY AND AT THE SPEED LIMIT ON A ROAD CLOSE TO MY HOME WHEN I DROVE OVER A SMALL BUMP OR POTHOLE IN THE ROAD. NORMALLY, THIS IMPACT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO SMALL AS TO BARELY CAUSE ANY EXTRA MOTION IN THE CAR. HOWEVER, ON THIS OCCASION, AFTER I RAN OVER THE BUMP, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT AND DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT AND BACK CURTAIN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I WAS STARTLED WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND ACCIDENTALLY JERKED THE STEERING WHEEL, HITTING OFF OF THE DIVIDER WITH THE FRONT TIRE. I INSPECTED THE CAR TO MAKE SURE NOTHING HIT THE VEHICLE, AND TO CHECK THAT PRIOR TO THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, I HAD NOT HIT ANYTHING , I HAD NOT, THREE DAYS AFTER THIS INCIDENT, AFTER FILING A CLAIM, INSURANCE COMPANY CALLED ME TO INFORM ME THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOTIFIED THEM THAT WHEN THE AIRBAGS HAD DEPLOYED A REPORT WAS SENT TO THE MANUFACTURER WITH DATA FROM THE INCIDENT. THE INSURANCE COMPANY SUGGESTED I CONTACT NHTSA TO FILE A REPORT. THE REPORT SHOWED THAT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DUE TO A COLLISION. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER FROM WHICH I PURCHASED IT TO HAVE THE AIRBAGS REINSTALLED, AND TO REPAIR DAMAGE DONE DURING THE AFTERMATH OF THE INCIDENT. THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE WAS DAMAGED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
MY 2002 VW JETTA 4 DOOR HAS THIS SUBSTANCE WHICH THEY USED TO BLOCK HEAT AND DEADEN THE NOISE FROM OUTSIDE, HOWEVER WHEN IT GETS HOT IT RUNS OUT OF THE HOLES IN THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND HAS AN AWFUL SMELL SOMETHING LIKE THAT OF MELTED CRAYONS, AND THE ODOR ATTACHES TO THE OCCUPANTS IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. *TR

THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN INSPECTED AND DIAGNOSED TWICE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED BOTH TIMES THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. WENT ABOUT HAVING IT TOWED TO VW DEALERSHIP TO GET FIXED. WHEN CALLED AGAIN WAS TOLD WOULDN'T COVER IT BUT WOULD GIVE ME 1000 DOLLARS OFF THE PRICE OF THE REPAIR VALID FOR 30 DAYS .. ON APRIL 22, 2007 MY SON WAS RETURNING TO COLLEGE IN THE 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA 1.8T WHEN THE ENGINE SIEZED WITHOUT WARNING AS HE ACCELERATED TO ENTER A BUSY INTERSTAT 80. FORTUNATELY, HE WAS ABLE TO COAST OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. INTERSTATE 80WAS HEAVILY USED BY TRUCKS, AND HAD MY SON NOT BEEN IN A POSITION TO GET OFF TO THE SIDE THE ENGINE FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD NOT ONLY TO MY SON BUT TO MANY OTHER VEHICLES USING THIS HIGHWAY. *AK I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INSTANCE OF FAILURE OF THE VW 1.8 T ENGINE. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN ON THE INTERNET IT APPEARS THAT IS FAIRLY COMMON FOR THESE ENGINES TO FAIL AND VW TENDS TO BLAME THE OWNERS FOR IMPROPER MAINTENANCE. MY JETTA WAS PURCHASED IN APRIL 2006 WITH 31,000 MILES, IN THE YEAR THAT WE HAD THE CAR WE PUT APPROX. 10,000 MILES ON IT AND WE HAD THE OIL CHANGED AT LEAST TWO TIMES. WE PURCHASED THIS CAR BASED ON VW ADVERTISING ABOUT THE QUALITY AND SAFETY OF THESE CARS AND I FEEL THAT VW SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR POORLY ENGINEERED ENGINE AND ISSUE A RECALL TO CORRECT DEFICIENCIES WITH THIS ENGINE. I ORDER FOR ME TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, I ALSO HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED THAT WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY FROZE THE TRANSMISSION WAS ALSO DAMAGED. THE COST OF TO MAKE THIS CAR USABLE AGAIN WILL BE IN EXCESS OF $7,000. WHILE I DON'T FEEL THAT IT IS RIGHT THAT I AM STUCK WITH THE COST OF REPAIRS THAT ARE THE RESULT OF A SERIOUS DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE, I AM MUCH MORE CONCERNED WITH PUTTING LIVES IN JEOPARDY WHEN AN ENGINE STOPS WITHOUT WARNING AT HIGH WAY SPEEDS
I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ON FORUMS ONLINE WHICH IS QUIT DISTURBING HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE AS WELL. THERE IS WATER THAT FORMS ON BOTH THE FRONT PASSENGER FLOOR AND SOMETIMES THE REAR FLOOR DURING RAINS. IT IS SUPPOSEDLY CLOGGED DRAINS. SHOULDN'T THESE DRAINS BE BIG ENOUGH TO HANDLE THE FLOW OF DEBRIS AND WATER. IT HAS HAPPENED IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT MODELS OF VW ACCORDING TO THE FORUMS. AND I AM UNDER A 2 YEAR VW WARRANTY BUT SUPPOSEDLY THIS ISN'T' COVERED ACCORDING TO THE DEALER. THIS COULD HAVE RUINED ELECTRONIC STUFF IN MY CAR OR COULD AS IT GETS WET. THERE WAS NOTHING ABOUT THIS IN THE MANUAL OR ANYTHING I HAD TO FIND IT OUT ONLINE. *JB
THE CABIN OF THE 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA EMITS A WAXY ODOR THAT I AM CONCERNED REPRESENTS ENGINE FUMES. I HAVE HAD THE CAR INSPECTED BY SEVERAL MECHANICS, AND, WHILE THEY COULD IDENTIFY THE ODOR, THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE SOURCE. THIS ODOR CAUSED ME AND MY PASSENGERS TO SUFFER BURNING EYES AND NAUSEA. *AK
THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG/ CURTAIN ON 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA, DEPLOYED WHILE TURNING RIGHT ON A WINDING ROAD. I WAS TRAVELING UNDER 20 MPH. THE ENGINE SHUT OFF, AND BECAUSE IT WAS ON A BLIND TURN I WAS ALMOST HIT BY A CAR BEHIND ME. AFTER 30 SECONDS I TURNED THE ENGINE ON, AND PULLED OVER TO A SAFE AREA TO INSPECT THE CAR. I TRAVEL THE ROAD EVERYDAY AND NO POT HOLES EXIST. THE DEALER SAID THAT THE COMPUTER DID NOT REGISTER AN ACCIDENT. THE MANUFACTURER, ENGINEER, LOOKED AT PICTURES SENT BY THE DEALERSHIP, AND SAID THAT THERE WERE SCRAPES UNDER THE CAR WHICH MUST HAVE CAUSED THE DEPLOYMENT. ASKED THE DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER IF THE SIDE AIR BAG/CURTAIN WAS NOT REPLACED WOULD THE OTHER AIR BAGS BE EFFECTED. THEY TOLD ME THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY PUBLIC INFORMATION ON THE EFFECT ONE DEPLOYMENT HAS ON THE REST OF THE SYSTEM, AND I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE IT FOR THE OTHER AIR BAGS TO PROVIDE PROTECTION. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND THEY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, WHO NOW REPORTED THAT THE COMPUTER READ AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED. I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT THE INSURANCE COMPANY. *AK
THE RIGHT FRONT TURN SIGNAL BULB WAS AT FIRST INTERMITTENT, BUT THEN BECAME INOPERATIVE. WHEN LIGHT WAS REMOVED THE FILAMENT WAS FINE, BUT THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF ARCING ACROSS THE CONTACTS. IT LOOKED LIKE THE CONTACTS WERE SHORT CIRCUITED. I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM ABOUT A YEAR AGO. MY 2002 JETTA WAS NOT PART OF A RECALL OF THIS VERY PROBLEM. THE VIN # DID NOT QUALIFY. BUT, AFTER LOOKING AT FORUM POSTINGS THIS IS A BIGGER PROBLEM THAT THE GROUP OF VIN NUMBERS THAT VOLKSWAGEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.*AK
