THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACE AT 25,000 MILES AND AGAIN AT 50,000 MILES. I FEEL THAT BRAKE PADS (ESPECIALLY ROTORS) SHOULD LAST MORE THAN EVERY 25,000 MILES. I'M APPROACHING 75,000 MILES AND AM ANTICIPATING WHETHER OR NOT I WILL BE REPLACING PADS AND ROTORS ONCE AGAIN!*AK
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ONE NIGHT BOTH FRONT HEADLIGHTS BURNED OUT WITHOUT WARNING. *NLM BOTH OF THE HEAD LIGHT WIRING HARNESS' FAILED AND CAUSED MULTIPLE HEAD LIGHT FAILURES. THE CONSUMER HAD TO PAY FOR 3 OF THE 4 FAILURES OUT OF POCKET. *SCC *NLM

BOLTS HOLDING STEERING RACK TO FRAME KEEP COMING LOOSE. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES WITH THE FIRST AT ABOUT 18K MILES.*JB

BRAKES VIBRATE NOTICEABLY WHEN SLOWING DOWN OR STOPPING AT VARIABLE SPEEDS. DEALER REPLACED REAR BRAKE DISCS UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY.*AK
ON ACCELERATION, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK TO THE FLOOR, CAUSING RAPID ACCELERATION. HAD I NOT PUT THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL, IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH. ACCELERATOR REMAINED "FLOORED" FOR 15-20 SECONDS; IT REPEATED CONSISTENTLY WHEN I RE-TESTED IT.*AK
RE COIL PACKS. VW HAS SUPPLIED THE CARS WITH DEFECTIVE COIL PACKS THAT CAN FAIL WITHOUT WARNIHG AT ANY TIME.I HAD ONE FAILED AT 18000 MILES. THE OTHER THREE CAN FAIL AT ANY TIME. CAN'T TAKE THE CAR ON LONG TRIPS WITHOUT TAKING A CHANCE OF A COIL PACK FAILURE.DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IF THERE WAS A FAILURE. VW NEEDS TO RECALL THE CARS AND REPLACE THESE DEFECTIVE PARTS. AND IF YOU ARE UNLUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE A FAILURE YOU CAN WAIT FOR PARTS FOR MONTHS AND IN TURN NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DRIVE.
2001 PASSAT WAGON GLX WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED. PASSENGER'S SEAT FULLY RECLINED UPON IMPACT, COMING TO REST ON AN INFANT CAR SEAT THAT WAS PROPERLY INSTALLED IN THE BACK SEAT. PASSENGER SUSTAINED MINOR NECK AND BACK INJURIES. INFANT WAS UNHARMED. SINCE INCIDENT THE PASSENGER'S SEAT HAS SPONTANEOUSLY FULLY RECLINED ON THREE OTHER OCCASIONS.*AK
ROTORS WEREOVERHEATING AND WARPING. PART REPLACED AND PROBLEM REOCCURRED.*AK
ONE OF THE FOUR COILPACKS ON MY 1.8T ENGINE HAS FAILED. IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT VW HAS REDESIGNED THE PART. VW WILL ONLY REPLACE THE PART THAT FAILED. ONCE THE PART FAILS THE CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE. VW SHOULD RECALL ALL OF THE PASSATS WITH THIS ENGINE AND REPLACE THE FAULTY PARTS.

CONSUMER CALLED COMPLAINING ABOUT HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLES COIL PACKS. ALSO STATED THAT THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME THAT THEY HAVE BEEN REPLACED. DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND HAS KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEM. DEALER HAS STATED THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM. PH *DT

I PURCHASED A 2001 VW PASSAT ON AUGUST 19, 2001 FROM TRANS OCEAN MOTOR IN PASADENA, CA. IN THE 8 WEEKS I HAVE OWNED THE CAR IT HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE DEALER 4 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LAST TIME IT HAD TO BE TOWED BECAUSE IT JUST STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. THE CAR LOST POWER AND THEN THE ENGINE DIED. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE EPC LIGHT TURNED ON AND THEN THE MALFUNCTION LIGHT OR IN OTHER WORDS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT WHICH WAS 1 WK PRIOR TO THIS ONE, I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND THE RPM WENT ERRACTIC. EVEN THOUGH I WAS STEPPING ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR HAD LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT DRIVE MORE THAN 50 MILES/HR. THE DEALER AWARE ABOUT MY SAFETY CONCERNS HAVE TRIED FIXING THE PROBLEM SEVERAL TIMES HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN GETTING WORSE. I AM REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY. THIS VEHICLE HAS BROKEN DOWN 4 TIMES WITHIN 11 MONTHS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE CAR LOST ALL POWER AND THE EPC LIGHT CAME ON. EACH TIME IT NEEDED TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER KEEPS CLAIMING THEY FIXED IT, BUT AFTER 4 TIMES I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR. I AM PURSUING THE LEMON LAW CURRENTLY. I COMMUTE A VERY WINDY HIGHWAY FOR WORK AND SHOULD THE CAR BREAK DOWN WITH THE PROBLEM AGAIN I COULD BE KILLED. 4 TIMES IS TOO MANY FOR THE DEALER TO SAY IT'S FIXED. I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE THAT THIS CAR IS REALLY FIXED. THEY HAVE FIXED THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT 2X, THE PEDAL 3X, AND THEN THE ENTIRE WIRING HARNES ONCE. SINCE THEY KEEP REPLACING THE SAME PARTS OVER AND OVER I HAVE NO WAY OF REALLY KNOWING THAT THE PROBLEM WILL NOT OCCUR AGAIN.*AK
WHEN AT A STOP OR DRIVING TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT TO HIGHER GEAR. ENGINE WILL RACE, RPM'S GO UP, AND VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO DEALER 4 TIMES, CANNOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM.*AK
MY 2001.5 PASSAT HAS FLOODED THREE TIMES, TWICE THROUGH THE POLLEN FILTER AND ONCE THROUGH THE SUN ROOF. MY INSURANCE COMPANY PAID $6000 FOR THE LAST REPAIR. THE ELECTRICAL IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT WAS DESTROYED TWICE. FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS THE SUN ROOF OPENS ON ITS OWN WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED, ENGINE OFF. RAIN WOULD AGAIN DESTROY THE ELECTRICAL WERE THIS TO HAPPEN DURING A STORM. I CHECK ON THE CAR EVERY NIGHT TO BE CERTAIN THAT THE ROOF IS CLOSED. VW WILL TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS. THE VERY WORST HAPPENING WAS WHEN I HAD HAD THE CAR FOR ONE WEEK AND ATTENDED A VERY TRAGIC FUNERAL. THE HORN STARTED BEEPING AS IF AT A WEDDING. I DROVE OUT OF THE PROCESSION AND TO A SAFE PLACE WHERE I CALLED FOR TOWING. THIS CAR IS A LEMON AND I WANT VW TO HONOR THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES TO THEIR CONSUMERS. THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS WHICH COULD COST $1000, AND THEY WOULD THEN DECIDE WHAT TO DO. I HAD VW PICK UP THE CAR AND FIX THE SIDE AIR BAG STRIP THAT HAD FALLEN AND HUNG OVER THE PASSENGER SIDE'S WINDOW. THEY CLAIM THEY NEVER SERVICED THIS. THEY ARE NOT TRUTHFUL IN THEIR SERVICE TO ME. HOW FOOLISH IT WOULD BE TO HAVE THEM DIAGNOSE A PROBLEM THEY WOULD CHARGE ME TO FIX ...LIKE GIVING A THIEF KEYS TO THE HOUSE. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2001 VW PASSAT ON AUGUST 21,2001 FROM PATRICK MOTORS IN AUBURN, MASS. IN THE 5 WEEKS I HAVE OWED THE CAR IT HAS HAD BEEN RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES ( 2 X TOWED) FOR THE SAME RELATED PROBLEM. MALFUNCTION LIGHT HAS GONE ON EACH OF THOSE TIMES. CAR HAS DRIVEN IN LOW GEAR AND THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH HESITATION OF THE VEHICLE WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE GAS. THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE HAS BEEN REPLACED AS WELL AS FRAYED WIRES REPAIRED THAT CAME FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE CAR HAS BE UNDRIVEABLE PER THE DEALERSHIP DURING THESE TIMES. I HAVE SAFETY CONCERNS WITH THE TYPE OF COMMUTE I DO EVERY DAY TO WORK. I DRIVE 50 MINS ONE WAY DOWN RT 2, 495 AND RT 3. I HAVE BEEN IN THE POSITION OF CONCERN IF MY CAR WILL MAKE IT HOME, TO WORK, WILL I CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WITH THE CARS CONTINUED PROBLEM WITH THE HESITATION WHEN STEPPING ON THE GAS. AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN PICKED UP FOR 6 DAYS, THE FRONT LEFT CV BOOT WORE OUT DUE TO LOOSE INSTALLATION. THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT FOUND BY DEALER BEFORE DELIVERY. THE CV BOOT IS NOW REPLACED BY DEALER.*AK
WHILE TRAVELING FROM COLUMBUS, NE TO SIOUX FALLS, SD ON SD HWY. 50 WEST OF VERMILLION, SD, MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE EXPLODED WITH NO WARNING. THE EXPLOSION DESTROYED THE TIRE AND TORE LOOSE THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE BODY MOLDING. THE SERVICEMAN AT THE SIOUX FALLS SEARS TOLD ME HE HAD ADJUSTED SEVERAL OTHER IDENTICAL MICHELIN TIRES FOR THE VERY SAME PROBLEM. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE OTHER TIRES ON MY CAR AND THAT WE MAY HAVE A DEFECTIVE BATCH OF TIRES HERE. CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING OUTISIDE OF DRIVEWAY AND THE RED LIGHT DISPLAYED ON DASHBOARD SAYING STOP CHECK COOLIANT, DON'T DRIVE. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO DEALERSHIP, AND KEPT VEHICLE OVER NIGHT. MECHANIC TOLD CONSUMER THAT TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED. BUT, PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. *AK
BRAKES PROBLEMS - LESS THAN A YEAR OLD, IF DRIVE 40 MPH AND UP, AND IF THE BRAKE PEDAL IS APPLIED, THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE FOR A BRIEF SECOND BEFORE IT DECELERATES (VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS). CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER REPLACED WINDSHIELD ON JULY 5TH AND HAD SAME PROBLEM. ALSO, DEALER WANTED TO REPLACE WINDSHIELD AGAIN.*AK CONSUMER STATES WINDSHIELD ALSO HAS STRESS FRACTURES THAT LOOK LIKE STRANDS OF A COBWEB, DEALER STATES THIS IS NOT A DEFECT AND THAT THIS IS NORMAL. *SLC
TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT 3000 MILES. CAR WAS STUCK IN FIRST GEAR. NOW THERE IS AN EXTREME TURBO LAG HESITATION ON ACCELERATION. THERE IS A GOOD 1-2 SECOND HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP. *NLM

THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOUD AND SCRAPING SOUND CAUSED BY THE PLASTIC ENGINE NOISE SHIELD WAS DRAGGING ON THE GROUND BECAUSE IT HAD LOST THE FASTENERS, THE DEALER INSTALLED NEW INNER FENDERS AND LOWER COVER. *YH
AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER ON 9 MAY, REPLACED CLOCK SPRING ASSEMBLY. LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN ON 16 MAY, DEALER FOUND NO PROBLEM. AIRBAG LIGHT ON AGAIN ON 23 MAY, DEALER REPLACED 1 AIRBAG AND CLOCK SPRING ASSEMBLY.AIRBAG LIGHT ON AGAIN ON 3 JUNE, AND DEALER WILL REPLACE BOTH AIRBAGS. VEHICLE STILL AT DEALER AT THIS TIME. *AK

CONSUMER IS EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE LOWER WORM SHAFT IN THE STEERING. *JG
AFTER I POSTED THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE TO THE PASSAT USERS GROUP: MY NEW 2001.5 PASSAT WAGON HAS A PERCEPTIBLE DISTORTION, OR RIPPLING EFFECT, IN THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN SEEING POLES, TREES, OR BUILDING SIDINGS WHILE MAKING A TURN, OR WHEN VIEWING HIGHWAY EXIT SIGNS WHILE PASSING THEM ON THE PARKWAY. THERE'S AN ACCORDION EFFECT; VERTICAL OBJECTS INCHWORM; LETTERS EXPAND AND CONTRACT. JUST MOVING MY HEAD FROM SIDE TO SIDE BY A FEW INCHES CAN PRODUCE THIS EFFECT. I CAN'T SAY YET THAT IT'S HAZARDOUS BUT IT'S CERTAINLY DISTRACTING. MEANWHILE, I CAN'T GET THE DEALER TO EVEN SIT IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND TELL ME IT'S MY IMAGINATION. I WAS REFERRED TO THE FOLLOWING MESSAGES: (1) I'VE SEEN SEVERAL REPORTS OF THIS. TIME TO GET A NEW DEALER. YOU SHOULD GET NEW GLASS UNDER WARRANTY. (2) MY '99 WAS 5000 MILES NEW WHEN I REALIZED THE WINDSHIELD HAD A DISTORTION AND RIPPLE EFFECT. THEY REPLACED IT NO CHARGE, BUT THE SECOND ONE IS AS BAD AS THE FIRST ONE. (3) HAS ANYONE WITH A '99 B5 NOTICED DISTORTIONS IN THE FRONT AND REAR GLASS? I'VE HAD MY WINDSHIELD AND REAR GLASS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, AND THE NEW GLASS IS ALSO DISTORTED - ALTHOUGH NOT QUITE AS BAD AS THE ORIGINAL. (4) WHEN I RECENTLY HAD A GENUINE NEW VW WINDSCREEN INSTALLED AFTER DAMAGE I NOTICED AN OPTICAL DISTORTION RIGHT OF MY STRAIGHT AHEAD VISION. THIS IS DISGRACEFUL QUALITY CONTROL FROM A MAJOR MOTOR MANUFACTURER AND THEIR AUTHORIZED REPAIR DEALER. (5) THERE APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD. A WAVY, VERTICAL LINE. THE SERVICE MANAGER LOOKED AT MINE AND FOUND IT RIGHT AWAY, HE ALSO TOLD ME IT WAS NOTED ON SEVERAL NEW 2000'S ON THE LOT, AND THAT ANOTHER CUSTOMER HAS A REALLY SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH IT. CHECK THE WINDSHIELD BY LOOKING OUT AT A STRAIGHT LINE, THE SIDE OF A BUILDING OR A POLE, AND MOVING YOUR EYES UP AND DOWN AS WELL AS RIGHT AND LEFT. VW IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. I AM NOT HAVING THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE MESS THEY MADE ON A
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT ANY MPH STEPPED OFF GAS PEDAL AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT DECELERATE. STEPPED ON BRAKE PEDAL, AND VEHICLE WILL SLOW DOWN. AS SOON AS LET BRAKE PEDAL GO, VEHICLE WILL ACCELERATE AGAIN.*AK

AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT TURNED ON STARTING 02/12/2001. IT WAS CHECK BY THE DEALER ON 03/06/2001 BUT NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND AND CLEARED CODE. THREE DAYS LATER AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT TURNED ON AGAIN WITH AIRBAG FAULT SIGN WAS ALSO ON. TOOK TO DEALER ON 03/22/2001 ALONG WITH THE NEW TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS TOWED IN BECAUSE OF THE TRANSMISSION PAN, GASKET PUNCTURED AND OIL LEAKING. THE DEALER SERVICE REPLACE THE AIRBAG AND UPPER HARNESS UNDER WARRANTY OF THE CAR, WHILE TRANSMISSION REPAIR WAS CHARGE TO MY INSURANCE. MY SAFETY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE TRANSMISSION PAN IS MAYBE TOO LOW TO THE GROUND THAT IT CAN EASILY BE PUNCTURED, WHICH MAY CAUSE SERIOUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. AND FOR THE AIRBAG WARNING SIGN TURNED ON, THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY IF ACCIDENT OCCURS OR MAY ACCIDENTALLY DEPLOY WHILE DRIVING.*AK

THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IN WHICH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DROPPED OUT OF GEAR RESULTING IN A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER TRANSMISSION TO THE DRIVE WHEELS, UPON DEPRESSION OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL THE RPM'S WOULD INCREASE BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. NLM

HAVE TAKEN IT TO VW DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAY THAT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE OR PUMP IS BAD. AFTER LOOKING OVER THE INTERNET FOR A FEW WEEKS NOW I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A NATION WIDE PROBLEM AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO FILE A COMPLAINT HERE. VW DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD ME THAT IT WILL COST ANYWHERE FROM 1500 TO 200 DOLLARS. NOW MY CAR IS HAVING STALLING PROBLEMS AS WELL AS THE SPEEDOMETER IS ALL OUT OF WACK. I HAVE CONNECTED IT TO THE INFAMOUS VAG-COM AND THE ONLY PROBLEM THAT COMES UP IS THE ABS NOT COMMUNICATING OR SOMETHING OF THE SORT.
