PURCHASED A VOLVO OVERSEAS IN 2005 AND IT RECENTLY BROKE DOWN LAST WEEK IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALER IN FORT WALTON BEACH AND THEY TOLD ME MY PART WAS FAULTY AND WILL HAVE IT RUNNING BY THE NEXT DAY. I CALLED MY WARRANTY COMPANY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT PART HAD BEEN RECALLED AND VOLVO SHOULD PAY FOR IT BUT THEY DENIED THERE WAS A RECALL AND CALLED IT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. MY WARRANTY COMPANY AMERICAN GUARDIAN SENT A 3RP PARTY MECHANIC TO VOLVO AND VERIFIED IT WAS CORRODED. THE RECALL IS ALL OVER THE WEBS/INCLUDING YOURS NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID #08V033000 SO I CALLED VOLVO AND THEY SAY THERE IS NO RECALL. THE PART AND LABOR WAS $800.00. MY VIN WASN'T LOADED IN THE US SYSTEM UNTIL THIS WEEK. CURRENTLY THE VOLVO DEALER REPLACE THE PART AND MOVED IT TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION AND SAYS IT CAN'T COVER IT UNLESS VOLVO PUT THAT SPECIFIC VIN NUMBER AND LOAD IT AGAINST IT (EXTENDED WARRANTY) BUT HOW IF THERE IS NO RECALL. NEITHER VOLVO OR THE WARRANTY COMPANY WILL PAY FOR THE PART. IF ITS AN OFFICIAL RECALL AND IT HAPPENED JUST LIKE THE DESCRIPTION ON THE RECALL STATES THEY SHOULD BE OBLIGATED TO COVER IT. ITS ONLY GOT 53000 MILES ON IT WHICH IS 3000 OVER THE MANUFACTURE WARRANTY. I FEEL VOLVO NEEDS TO ADD MY VIN TO THE LIST BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY ITS A PROBLEM TO MINE ALSO. I HAVE REFUSED TO PICK UP THE CAR THE LAST WEEK UNTIL I HEARD BACK FORM VOLVO BUT THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. *TR
AFTER LETTING THE VEHICLE SIT OVER NIGHT...WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE IN THE MORNING THERE IS NO BRAKE PRESSURE AFTER A HALF MILE OF DRIVING. THIS HAPPENS EVERYDAY AND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH VOLVOS. THIS PROBLEM COULD RESULT IN VERY SERIOUS PROBLEMS AND MAYBE EVEN FATAL TO OTHER VOLVO OWNERS WHO ARE NOT AWARE OF THIS COMMON PROBLEM......I DO KNOW THAT ON THE VOLVO S40 2000 MODEL THIS WAS A RECALL AND IT SHOULD ALSO BE ON THE VOLVO S40 2005 MODEL. *TR
ONE DAY OUT OF THE BLUE, THE WARNING LIGHT SAYING THE AIRBAGS WERE NOT OPERATING APPEARED. FOUND OUT THAT A SENSOR LOCATED WITHIN ANOTHER PART, LOCATED SAFELY UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT, HAD BECOME DEFECTIVE. ALL ON ITS OWN. I HAD A CHOICE. ROLL THE DICE AND MAYBE IN A BAD CRASH THE AIRBAGS WOULD NOT DEPLOY...OR SPEND $1,400 TO GET IT REPLACED. ALSO EVEN THOUGH IT SAID ONLY PASSENGER AIRBAG WAS AFFECTED, DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WOULD NOT CONFIRM OR DENY WHETHER THE DRIVER AIRBAG WAS OPERABLE. SO I SHELLED OUT THE CASH ONLY TO FIND THAT TWO PARTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED - ONE PART HAD TO BE BROKEN TO GET TO THE SENSOR. SO I HAD TO PURCHASE BOTH PARTS. AND THEY SAID THIS IS ONE OF THE SAFEST VEHICLES ON THE ROAD? I LATER FOUND OUT THIS IS COMMON, FILED A COMPLAINT WITH VOLVO, AND THEY SENT ME A "COURTESY" CHECK FOR $200 TO HELP DEFRAY THE COST. I THINK THEY SHOULD RECALL THIS PART AND PAY THE ENTIRE PRICE. *TR
ENGINE FAILURE. CAR STALLED WHILE ON HIGHWAY. UPON ARRIVAL AT VOLVO SERVICE DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT A DRIVE BELT BROKE, LEADING TO THE BREAKAGE OF THE TIMING BELT AND SUBSEQUENT EXTREME DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. ALL BELTS, PISTONS, VALVES AND TOP PART OF ENGINE NEEDED REPLACING. APPROXIMATE DAMAGE WAS $5000. CAR HAS ONLY 85K ON IT, DRIVE BELT AND TIMING BELT HAVE A RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT IN MANUAL AS 125K. VOLVO DID NOTHING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS ISSUE, IN FACT CALLING OUT THE SERVICE RECORD WHICH IS IMPECCABLE MINUS A 50K SERVICE WHICH WOULD'VE COST $1500 AND DID NOT INCLUDE ANY MAINTENANCE TO THE TIMING BELT. IN LOOKING UP THIS ISSUE ON MANY WEBSITES, IT WOULD APPEAR THIS IS NOT ATYPICAL FOR THIS MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR VOLVO. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 VOLVO S40. WHILE DRIVING LOW SPEEDS, THE ENGINE MAKES A HOWLING NOISE. THE NOISE STOPS WHILE DRIVING HIGHER SPEEDS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS AN OIL TRAP (PCV SYSTEM) IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD THAT WAS CLOGGED AND COULD CAUSE THE CRANK CASE TO FAIL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
IN AUGUST OF 08 MY 2004.5(NEW BODY STYLE) VOLVO S40 T5'S ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE A HIGH SCREECHING NOISE AT IDLE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. IT HAD 61,000MILES AND I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THAT IT NEEDED A NEW OIL TRAP. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT RECURRED. MY WIFE'S 05 S40 T5 HAS 58,000MILES AND THE SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED IN HER'S. THERE MUST BE AN ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 VOLVO S40. WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, THE VEHICLE STALLS AND HESITATES. THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND HAS OCCURRED FOR APPROXIMATELY 8 MONTHS TO A YEAR. THE FAILURE GRADUALLY WORSENS WHENEVER THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V033000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
I HAVE A VOLVO S40 2005 AND THE RADIO/CD PLAYER JUST BLANKS OUT. WHEN I START THE CAR THE RADIO/CD WON'T PLAY. IT WILL POWER UP AND THE DISPLAY WILL SHOW, BUT NO SOUND COMES ON. IT HAS DONE THIS THREE TIMES. I HAVE TO TOTALLY TURN THE CAR OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR A WHILE BEFORE IT WILL WORK AGAIN. *TR

WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE INEFFECTIVE. DEALER TRIED POLISHING THE WINDSHIELD, REPLACING THE BLADES, AND EVENTUALLY REPLACED THE WINDSHIELD. WE TRIED TO INCREASE THE FREQUENCY OF CLEANING THE BLADES. THE FUEL CONTROL MODULE FAILED, CAUSING AN IMMEDIATE STALL. THERE IS A TSB CONCERNING THE PLACEMENT OF THIS MODULE. IT IS TO BE MOVED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO BEHIND THE BACK SEAT. WATER GOT INTO THE MODULE CAUSING IT TO MELT DOWN!!! *TR

ON NOVEMBER 14, 2007, MY DAUGHTER, HAD A ACCIDENT WITH MY CAR, A 2005 VOLVO S.40, 24.1. SHE HIT A MEDIUM SIZE TREE HEAD ON. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOYED. *TR
2005 VOLVO S40 T5 : MULTIPLE FAILURES OF OIL TRAP HOUSING AT 22,500 AND 68,330 MILES. FIRST FAILURE OCCURRED 10 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE. VOLVO CHECKED VALVE (30677524), AND REPLACED OIL HOUSING (30684381), HOSE CLAMP (976561) UPGRADED ECM PETROL (30668282)...ALL UNDER WARRANTY. SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED AT 68,330 MILES, VOLVO AGAIN UPGRADED ECM (30668282), REPLACED HOSE CLAMP (976561), HOSE (8670008), AND AGAIN REPLACED OIL TRAP HOUSING (30684381) DUE TO CLOGGED LINES RELEASING AIR PRESSURE. COST OF REPAIR: $505 LABOR + $242 PARTS= $747.17, NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY.*JB
1) I HAD TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE AND USED THE VEHICLE SUPPLIED SCISSOR JACK. I NOTICED THAT IT GOT INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE JACK TO RAISE THE CAR. EVENTUALLY IT GOT SO STIFF THAT IT REQUIRED BOTH ARMS TO TURN THE LEVER. 2) THE JACK SUDDENLY FAILED AND THE CAR CAME CRASHING DOWN ONTO THE PAVEMENT. NO DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AS THE TIRE WAS STILL ON THE AXLE. NO PERSONAL INJURY AS BOTH ARMS WERE ON THE JACK'S LEVER ARM. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, I NOTICED THE WORM SCREW WAS SOMEHOW STRIPPED. 3) REPORTED TO VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE JACK BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A WARRANTY REPLACEMENT. *JB
THE S-40 WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE MESSAGE CAME ON STATING ENGINE FAILURE. I PULLED OVER IN THE BREAKDOWN LANE AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER TO LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM WHICH OCCURRED AT THAT TIME, TODAY I EXPERIENCED THE SAME AND NOW THE CD DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO BRING THE S 40 T5 IN FOR SERVICE TO CHECK THE PROBLEM AGAIN. *JB
WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE CAUSING SCRATCHES IN THE WINDSHIELD. I FEEL THIS IS A DEFECT WITH THE WIPERBLADES CAUSING DIRT TO SCRATCH THE WINDSHIELD MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE. *TR
STARTED CAR WHEN PARKED IN PARKING SPACE, AND CAR WENT FORWARD WHEN SHIFT LEVER WAS IN REVERSE. MOVED SHIFT LEVER THROUGH 'GEARS' TO REVERSE TWO MORE TIMES. THREE TIMES CAR MOVED FORWARD WHEN LEVER WAS IN REVERSE. TURNED OFF ENGINE AND RE-STARTED CAR, THEN CAR WOULD GO BACKWARDS WHEN IN REVERSE. *JB
I OWN THE 2005 S40. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN 2.5 MONTHS THAT MY CAR HAS JUST DECIDED NOT TO START. THE FIRST TIME, IT HAD JUST BEEN SERVICED AND I DROVE ABOUT 20 MINUTES TO A GAS STATION, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND THEN IT WOULD NOT START. AFTER A FEW TRIES IT DECIDED TO START. I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY BACK TO DEALER AND THEY KEPT IT FOR A DAY AND SAID NOTHING WRONG. IN THE MEAN TIMES, A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE NST TIME THE CAR FAILED TO START, I THOUGHT I SMELLED SOMETHING FIRE-LIKE SMOKY, BUT FIGURED MUST BE MY IMAGINATION. SO THE SECOND TIME, I PARKED THE CAR AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 45 MINUTES AND THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. I DID NOT CONTINUE TO TRY TO START IT, BECAUSE I WANT THE DEALER TO SEE WHAT IT DOES AND HAD IT TOWED THERE. THEY SAID IT COULD BE A KEY MALFUNCTION OR SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE STARTER. I DID FIND A RECALL ON THE 2005 S80 THAT SEEMS TO FIT THE DESCRIPTION OF MY PROBLEMS. I WONDER IF THE S40 HAS THE SAME STARTER PROBLEMS AS THE S80. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN REPAIR FOR 2 DAYS NOW. *NM
NOVEMBER 15, 2005 MY VOLVO S40'S PARKING BRAKE FAILED TO WORK PROPERLY. AFTER PARKING MY CAR AND LEAVING THE GARAGE THE BRAKE "SLIPPED" AND ROLLED OUT OF THE SPOT HITTING ANOTHER CAR. MY CAR HAD 2,899 MILES ON IT. WHEN RETURNING TO MY CAR THAT NIGHT I FOUND THAT MY PARKING BRAKE HAD "SLIPPED" AND MY VOLVO HAD DRIFTED DOWN THE RAMP OF MY PARKING GARAGE AND STRUCK ANOTHER CAR. THE MORNING OF THE ACCIDENT, I PULLED INTO MY PARKING SPOT, SET MY PARKING BRAKE, SAT IN MY CAR A FEW MINUTES COLLECTING MY PERSONAL ITEMS FROM MY FRONT SEAT, AND BACK SEAT, SHUT FRONT AND BACK DOOR AND WALKED DOWN THE RAMP WHILE LOOKING BACK TO MAKE SURE THAT MY CAR WAS LOCKED. THE OWNER OF THE OTHER CAR WAS ALREADY ON THE SCENE WRITING A REPORT WITH THE PARKING GARAGE MANAGER WHEN I ARRIVE AT MY CAR THAT AFTERNOON. I WENT TO GET IN MY VOLVO AND MOVE IT BUT BEFORE I GOT IN IT, I NOTICED THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WAS STILL ON AS I HAD LEFT IT THAT MORNING. I SHOWED THIS TO BOTH WITNESSES PRIOR TO GETTING IN MY VOLVO, THEY BOTH WERE ALREADY AWARE THE PARKING BRAKE WAS ON. THE POLICE WERE CALLED AND ARRIVED ON THE SCENE BUT DIDN'T DO A REPORT SINCE NO ONE WAS INJURED PER THEIR POLICY. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO TAKE MY VOLVO TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE PARKING BRAKE CHECKED. THE NEXT MORNING I CALLED VOLVO CORPORATE CRITICAL CARE DEPARTMENT AND EXPRESSED MY SAFETY CONCERN ABOUT MY VOLVO. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE MY VOLVO TO GET CHECKED OUT AND I INFORMED HER THAT I HAD AN APPOINTMENT FOR NOVEMBER 21, 2005. I WAS TOLD A SPECIALIST WOULD LOOK THE CAR OVER. WHEN I PICKED MY CAR UP ON NOVEMBER 21ST I WAS TOLD THAT THE SPECIALIST LOOKED AT MY VOLVO AND THE PARKING BRAKE HAD NEEDED TO BE ADJUSTED TO MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS BECAUSE IT WAS NOT IN LINE WITH SPECIFICATIONS. *NM
TWO ISSUES: 1) CAR STALLED ON THE 495 BELTWAY AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT LIT AND CAR WOULD NOT START. A VOLVO TEMPORARY SW FIX WAS APPLIED TO THE COMPUTER TO FIX 2) OEM LICENSE PLATE BOLTS ON THE FRONT OF CAR A VERY SHARP AND CAN CAUSE HARM TO PERSONS AND PROPERTY
ON THE 2005 VOLVO S40 T5 AUTOMATIC ONLY, THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO THE GAS PEDAL. IN FACT, A SIZE 9 SHOE OF MEDIUM WIDTH WILL BARELY FIT ON THE GAS PEDAL WHILE TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKE PEDAL IS ABOUT 1.5 INCHES HIGHER THAN THE GAS PEDAL SO MANY TIMES THE FOOT WILL BE CAUGHT UNDER THE PEDAL. THIS IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS DESIGN AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE. OTHER DRIVERS HAVE REPORTED THIS BUT VOLVO IS NOT WILLING TO RETROFIT THE PEDALS. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NON-T5 VERSION DOES NOT SUFFER FROM THIS BAD DESIGN NOR DOES THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THIS SAFETY DEFECT, IF NOT CORRECTED, WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT FOR DRIVERS OF THIS SPECIFIC CAR. ON JULY 27, I ALMOST GOT IN AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE MY FOOT GOT STUCK UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHILE I WAS ABLE TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER CAR AND ALMOST CRASHING ONTO THE SIDEWALK, I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT MANY ACCIDENTS CAN BE AVOIDED IF VOLVO WAS TO REDESIGN OR RETROFIT THE SPACING OF THE GAS AND BRAKE PEDALS ON THE VOLVO S40 T5 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. PLEASE INSPECT THE SPACING OF THE PEDALS AS THEY ARE NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH MINIMUM STANDARDS. *JB
DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT WILL SQUEAK WHEN MAKING LEFT OR RIGHT TURNS AS BODY WEIGHT SHIFTS. VOLVO HAS PUT 2 "BANDAGES" AROUND THE METAL PARTS THAT MAKE THIS NOISE. THEY KNOW ITS A PROBLEM AND ITS A DESIGN FLAW, AS THEY SHOULD HAVE USED BRONZE BUSHING OR SOMETHING SIMILAR TO AVOID THE 2 METALS CONTACTING EACH OTHER. IS THIS A SAFETY CONCERN? MAYBE, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN METALS CONSTANTLY RUBS OVER TIME? THEIR BANDAID SOLUTION IS POOR SINCE THE TAPE WILL WEAR AND TEAR BETWEEN EACH SERVICE. MILEAGE IS APPROX. 35,000, PROBLEM HAS BEEN THERE SINCE DAY 1. *TR
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START VEHICLE IN THE MORNING THE FIRST TRY RESULTS IN LOUD SHAKING AND SHUTTERING. SOUNDS LIKE CAR IS NOT RUNNING ON ALL CYLINDERS, OR HAS BAD TIMING. INITAL PROBLEM IS THAT HOOD INSULATOR FASTENERS ARE COMMING OFF WHICH COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT AND CASUE ENGINE FAILURE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO DEALER TWO TIMES. DEALER SAID THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. PROBLEM OCCURS AT LEAST ONCE EVERY TWO DAYS.
ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS TOO CLOSE TO BRAKE PEDAL; POSSIBLE INTERFERNCE WHEN WEARING CERTAIN SHOES. *NM
SEPERATION BETWEEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND BRAKE PEDAL IS TOO CLOSE. I CONSTANTLY TOUCH THE BRAKE PEDAL AS I ACCELERATE.*AK
I OWN A 2005 VOLVO S40 AND THE GAS PEDAL AND BRAKE PEDAL ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. THIS HAS CAUSED AN ISSUE WITH MY FOOT CATCHING THE BRAKE FROM BEHIND AS I MOVE MY FOOT FROM THE GAS TO THE BRAKE. AND IF I NEED TO BRAKE IMMEDIATELY AND MY FOOT HANGS UP THIS COULD CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT.*AK
THREE ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE SO FAR TO CORRECT A BRAKE PROBLEM. WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON HAVING THE CAR SERVICES A FOURTH TIME IN THE COURSE OF 6 MONTHS, MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP A TOTAL OF THREE WEEKS. *NM
I OWN A 2005 VOLVO S40 2.4I THAT WAS PURCHASED IN DECEMBER 2004. THE ISSUE IS THE SEPARATION OF THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS AS WELL AS THE SEPARATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL/ARM AND THE TRANSMISSION TUNNEL, WHICH PROVIDES OVERALL CLEARANCE FOR THE RIGHT FOOT. THEY ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER AND WHILE DRIVING, MY FOOT TENDS TO HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL SLIGHTY WHEN I WANT TO PUSH ON THE ACCELERATOR. IN ADDITION TO THIS, THE WINDSHIELD IS QUITE EASILY CHIPPED. I HAVE 4000 MILES ON MY CAR AND THERE ARE ALREADY 9 CHIPS IN THE WINDSHIELD. MY PARENTS HAVE MORE THAN 150,000 MILES ON TWO DIFFERENT CARS AND ONLY TWO CHIPS IN ONE OF THE WINDSHIELDS.
