DASHBOARD INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GOING ON AND OFF-HAD IT TESTED SEVERAL TIMES-STAYS OFF--NO GAUGES OR LIGHTING-THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL VOLVOS AND I AM THINKING IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE-AND WHY HAD IT NOT BEEN RECALLED YET?? THIS IS A REPAIR THAT I HAVE TO FIX-AS IT IS ALMOST 1500 DOLLARS---VOLVO FORUMS HAS SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THIS--BEFORE I GET REPAIR I AM WONDERING IF VOLVO SHOULD CONTRIBUTE--- *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED WITH HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE WOULD INTERMITTENTLY SURGE FORWARD. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD INTERMITTENTLY HESITATE TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOPPED POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000. UPDATED 01/04/12 *BF UPDATED 01/09/12
I AM THE OWNER OF A 2003 VOLVO S60, THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN A HEADACHE FOR SOME TIME NOW. THE FIRST ISSUE STARTED WITH THE HEADLIGHTS BLOWING OUT. I HAVE HAD THE CAR SINCE 2008 AND THE LIGHTS HAVE BLOWN OUT ATLEAST 10X'S. THE 2ND MAJOR ISSUE I'M HAVING WITH THE VEHICLE IS THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN WITHOUT WARNING WHEN MAKING A TURN OR SOMETIMES SITTING IDLE AT A RED LIGHT. OF COURSE WHEN THE CAR IS HOOKED UP TO A DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE THERE ARE NO ERROR CODES AND SINCE THIS ISSUE HAPPENS WITHOUT WARNING IT NEVER HAPPENS WHEN A SERVICE TECH IS WITH ME. LASTLY, TWO DAYS AGO I STARTED MY VEHICLE AND THE ENTIRE DASH COMPLETELY BLACKED OUT. NONE OF THE GAUGES ARE OPERABLE. I CANNOT SEE WHETHER I HAVE FUEL OR NOT IN IT. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE HELP RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE ISSUES. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS, AND THERE WERE MANY VOLVO OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RE-CALL SO THAT THE CONSUMERS WHO HAVE PAID SEVERAL DIAGNOSTIC FEES AND REPAIRS FEES GET REIMBURSED FOR THE FAULTY PRODUCTS OR PARTS BEING USED TO BUILD THESE VEHICLES. *TR
2003 VOLVO S60 AW DASHBOARD FAILURE. I UNDERSTAND FROM TALKING WITH AUTO MECHANICS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND IS ALSO RECOGNIZED BY AUTO ELECTRICAL REPAIR SITES. THIS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WITH THIS LOSS OF EQUIPMENT. *TR
COMPLIANT 1: I HAVE A 2003 S60 VOLVO. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GOES DARK AND ALL INSTRUMENTS STOP WORKING. THIS INCLUDES ALL GAUGES, SPEEDOMETER, RPM, FUEL, TEMP AND BLINKERS. THEY ALL GO TO ZERO AND PANEL TURNS BLACK AND COMPLETELY OFF. THE EXTERIOR BLINKERS DO STILL WORK. WHEN THE PANEL IS WORKING I RECEIVE VARIOUS MESSAGES SUCH AS SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT, BRAKE FAILURE, AND STOP IMMEDIATELY NO OIL PRESSURE. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID IT'S THE DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE WHICH COSTS $1300 TO REPLACE. MY MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THIS IS A REOCCURING PROBLEM IN THIS CAR. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY VOLVO'S OF THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL IN WHICH THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS ARE OCCURING. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS PROBLEM. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT IT'S A RECURRING PROBLEM. COMPLIANT 2: I'M ALSO EXPERIENCING AN ENGINE STALL PROBLEM. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE CAR WILL STALL AT LEAST 50% OF THE TIME WHEN MAKING A TURN. I'VE RESEARCHED THIS AS WELL AND FOUND THAT IT'S A REOCCURRING PROBLEM AS WELL. APPARENTLY THE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR LOCATED ON THE LEFT END OF THE FUEL RAIL MAY, AT TIMES, TRANSMIT AN INCORRECT SIGNAL REGARDING THE FUEL PRESSURE TO THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. THIS CAUSES ENGINE MISFIRES AND CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY WHEN IN MIDDLE OF INTERSECTIONS. I HAVE COME CLOSE TO MANY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS BECAUSE OF THIS ENGINE FAILURE.
FOR SEVERAL WEEKS I HAVE INTERMITTENT ISSUES WITH ODD CODES SHOWING UP ON THE DASH BOARD AND THEN THE CAR NOT STARTING. I TOOK IT IN AND NO ONE COULD FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THIS WEEK DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON THE HIGHWAY THE CAR WENT INTO FULL SHUT DOWN. (EXTREMELY DANGEROUS !!!!) I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART A FEW MINUTES LATER AND DROVE THE CAR HOME WITH THE FLASHERS ON AND REMAINING IN THE RIGHT LANE IN CASE OF A REPEAT. I WAS IN THE FAR LEFT LANE KEEPING UP WITH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC WHEN THE CAR DIED INITIALLY. IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH VOLVOS AND I AM HOPING THAT SOMETHING WILL BE DONE AS THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED, INCLUDING ALL GAUGES AND WARNING LIGHTS. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES WERE AFFECTED BY THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY WHERE THE FAILURE WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CONTROL MODULE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACT AND ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY THEREFORE, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
I HAVE A 2003 S600 AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GOES DARK AND ALL THE INSTRUMENTS STOP WORKING (SPEEDOMETER, RPM, FUEL, TEMP -- ALL GO TO ZERO) . THIS OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY, WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING FINE AND NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. I AM ALSO EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD. AS AN EXAMPLE, THE BLINKER LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD ONLY WORK ABOUT 20% OF THE TIME. THE ACTUAL DIRECTIONALS ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR ARE STILL WORKING ALL OF THE TIME. THE CONDITION SEEMS TO BE GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. IN ADDITION VARIOUS MESSAGES HAVE APPEARED -- SUCH AS SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT, BRAKE FAILURE - STOP SAFELY. BROUGHT IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE HAD TO REPLACE THE DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE (DIM) $1,300. HE STATED THAT HE HAS REPLACED 4 DIM'S WITHIN THE PAST MONTH. APPEARS TO BE A COMMON FAILURE WITH 2003 S60 MODEL. MY MECHANIC ALSO COMMENTED THAT IN THE PAST VOLVO DEALER WOULD ONLY HAVE 1 DIM IN STOCK -- THEY NOW HAVE 6 TO 8 IN STOCK. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE A MANUFACTURER EXPENSE -- NO MATTER WHAT THE MILEAGE IS ON THE CAR. *TR UPDATED 08/04/11 *BF
2003 VOLVO S60 PASSENGER FRONT DOOR HANDLE DOES NOT OPEN FROM INSIDE. OPENS FROM OUTSIDE FINE. *TR
I HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO AND REPLACED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. JUST TODAY (9/25/10), MY 2003 VOLVO S60 BEGAN TO IRREGULARLY STALL WHILE DRIVING. WHILE I'M SLOWING DOWN, IT DOWNSHIFTS BY IT SELF, AND JUST DIES, AND WHILE I'M SLOWING DOWN, THE WARNING INDICATORS ON THE DASH ARE NOT LIT, AS IF NOTHING IS WRONG, BUT WHEN COME TO A COMPLETE STOP ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH ARE LIT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THEN COMES ON, IT WASN'T ON BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS WHEN YOU ARE SLOWING DOWN TO TURN AT AN INTERSECTION. THE CAR STALL, YOU HAVE NO POWER STEERING AND YOU ARE DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THIS HAPPENED NO LESS THAN 10 TIME WHILE I WAS DRIVING TODAY. *TR
THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLES ON MY VEHICLE BROKE. I WAS ABLE TO GET A NEW HANDLE ASSEMBLY FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE, BUT THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE A NEW HANDLE ASSEMBLY FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. THE DOOR CANNOT BE OPENED FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE. I'VE WAITED TWO MONTHS, BUT APPARENTLY THE NEW PART IS NOT AVAILABLE. *TR
2003 VOLVO S60 EXPERIENCED "DEATH" OF DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE (DIM), WHICH MONITORS ALL GAUGES ON THE VEHICLE. DEALERSHIP IS ABLE TO REPLACE THE PART FOR $1500! IT NOT AVAILABLE "AFTER MARKET" BY ANOTHER MANUFACTURER. RESEARCH ONLINE SHOWS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AMONG 2001-2003 MODELS. THIS MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED, AS NUMEROUS PEOPLE ARE DRIVING WITHOUT DASH PANEL INFORMATION DUE TO THE EXORBITANT COST. THE PROBLEM BEGAN APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS AGO AND CANNOT BE REMEDIED WITHOUT BUYING THE DIM. *TR
SINCE ABOUT THREE MONTHS AFTER I GOT MY CAR IN 2010 THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK. THE GAUGES DO NOT MOVE OR TURN ON WHATSOEVER AND THE LIGHTS DO NOT COME ON. I HAVE LOOKED ON VOLVO FORUMS AND IT SAYS THAT THE MOTOROLLA CHIP IN THE DASHBOARD IS DEFECTIVE IN ALL OF THE 2001-2003 MODELS. IT IS RATHER SCARY IN MY OPINION NEVER KNOWING HOW MUCH GAS I HAVE OR HOW FAST I AM GOING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 55 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE ASSEMBLY AT THE CONTACTS EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 64,000.
THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOOR WILL NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO GARDEN STATE VOLVO IN WALL, NJ IN MARCH FOR THIS TO BE FIXED. THE MECHANIC "FIXED" THE INSIDE CABLE WITH DUCT TAPE AND CHARGED US $175 FOR THE REPAIR. WITHIN A WEEK THE DOOR WAS BROKEN AGAIN. I CALLED GARDEN STATE VOLVO AND ASKED FOR THE PART TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM TO BE ORDERED. I HAVE CALLED SEVERAL TIMES AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE PART IS BACK-ORDERED AND IS COMING FROM SWEDEN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT THE DRIVER CAN NOT GET OUT. *TR
FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR, WILL NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE AND WINDOW WILL NOT ROLL DOWN. WINDOW LOCKED IN PLACE AND THE MOTOR STRUGGLES IN ITS ATTEMPT TO ROLL IT DOWN. ALONG WITH THIS A WEEK LATER MY SUN ROOF DECIDED NOT TO OPEN, IN AN ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE SUN ROOF- ALL YOU HEAR IS A LOUD CLICKING SOUND. EVEN THEN IT BARELY CRACKS OPEN. *TR
MY 2003 VOLVO S60 HAS A SEATBELT WARNING MESSAGE. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE WHICH WOULD COST 1400 PLUS TAX TO REPAIR. THE CAR IS VALUED AT APPROXIMATELY 4000 AS A TRADE. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF FAILURE OF THIS PART EVEN IN MUCH NEWER VOLVOS. *TR
BRAKE BOOSTER STARTS LEAKING AIR FROM VACUUM PRESSURE. READ ONLINE THAT THIS IS QUITE OFTEN FROM OTHER VOLVO OWNERS AROUND THE TIME WHEN THE MILEAGE GETS TO BETWEEN 95,000 AND 100,000. REDUCED BRAKING POWER AS A RESULT OF DEFECT. *TW
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 VOLVO S60. WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO EXIT A PARKING SPACE THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER EXAMINING THE VEHICLE THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE FLOOR MAT BECAME STUCK UNDER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS AND THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 50,000.
I HAVE A 2003 S60 VOLVO. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE CAR WOULD GO INTO LIMP MODE AND THE SPEED WOULD QUICKLY DROP TO 10 MPH AND THE MESSAGE REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE WOULD BE DISPLAYED. THE CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE PAST THAT SPEED. THIS IS VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THE QUICK DROP IN SPEED MAY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. I TOOK THE CAR TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THE CAR NEEDS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM REPLACED. THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH OLDER MODELS AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED AFTER A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. MY MODEL IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL, HOWEVER; IT IS EXHIBITING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM THAT USUALLY OCCURS WHEN THE CAR REACHES 100,000 MILES. *TR
WE TO HAVE A 2003 S60 WITH A VERY BAD FUEL SMELL. WE BOUGHT IT USED IN 2006 FROM A VOLVO DEALER IN CARY, NC. OF COURSE, WHEN I CALLED VOLVO AND GAVE THEM THE VIN #, THEY SAID THAT WE WERE NOT COVERED. OUR CERTIFIED PRE OWNED STATUS EXPIRED IN FEB. OF THIS YEAR. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO SPEND $700+ TO GET SOMETHING FIXED THAT HAS BEEN A RECURRING PROBLEM FOR VOLVO. *TR
AT APPROXIMATELY 85,000 MILES ON MY 2003 VOLVO S60, THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR FAILED TO OPEN. THE DEALER SAID A PLASTIC PART HAD BROKEN INSIDE THE DOOR PANEL AND TO CORRECTLY FIX, IT WOULD BE $845 AND THAT THE ENTIRE DOOR PANEL WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY THEN SAID THAT IF WE WANTED TO ACCEPT THE RISK, THEY COULD GO IN AND GLUE THE PIECE AND TIE IT FOR $162. VOLVO SAID THEY WOULDN'T BE RESPONSIBLE ALTHOUGH THE PART FAILURE TRAPS A PERSON IN THE CAR NOT ALLOWING THE PASSENGER TO OPEN THEIR DOOR FROM WITHIN. I WENT WITH THE RISKY $162 OPTION AND IT FAILED TO WORK A MONTH LATER. THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR IS INOPERABLE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. IT WILL OPEN FROM THE LATCH ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. *TR
WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE A LOUD "BANG" WAS HEARD FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING A MOMENTARY MOVING DISTURBANCE (SHIMMY). UPON STOPPING THE VEHICLE TO INSPECT, I NOTICED THERE WAS NO LONGER ANY TENSION ON THE PARKING BRAKE. CONTINUING TO DRIVE INDICATED THAT THE BRAKE WAS SEIZED ON ONE WHEEL AND LOOSE/RATTLING PARTS FROM SOMEWHERE NEAR THE REAR WHEEL. FURTHER INVESTIGATION HAS SO FAR REVEALED THAT THIS MAY NOT BE AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM FOR S60 VOLVOS WITH REPEATED COMPLAINTS APPEARING ON ENTHUSIASTS SITES INCLUDING INCIDENTS OF BOTH REAR WHEELS SEIZING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN OPERATION. CONSULTATION WITH THE TWO NEAREST VOLVO DEALERSHIPS INDICATES NO ACKNOWLEDGMENT FROM VOLVO OF THE DEFECT. IT APPEARS THE PROBLEM MAY BE WITH THE INTERNAL PARTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RETURN MECHANISMS IN THE PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY. AS THIS IS POTENTIALLY A SERIOUS SAFETY ITEM I BELIEVE IT WOULD BE BENEFICIAL TO HAVE THE NHTSA REVIEW THIS PROBLEM AS MANY S60 VOLVOS WILL HAVE REACHED SIMILAR SERVICE LIVES. *TR
ON 12 DEC, 2008, MY 2003 VOLVO S60 STALLED WITH NO WARNING WHILE TRAVELING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH. I PULLED TO SAFETY (VEHICLE WAS IN "LIMP HOME" MODE) AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP (PARK PLACE VOLVO). SINCE THE VEHICLE STARTED RIGHT BACK UP AND PRESENTED NO CODES, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG AND GIVEN A BILL FOR $418 (FOR TOW AND DIAGNOSTIC CHECK). APPROX. 1 MONTH LATER, VEHICLE PRESENTED SAME PROBLEM; IT STALLED, WITHOUT WARNING, WHILE DRIVING... CREATING A GREAT SAFETY RISK FOR THE SECOND TIME. I HAD VEHICLE TOWED AGAIN TO SAME DEALERSHIP, AND SINCE VEHICLE STARTED RIGHT BACK UP WITH NO CODES, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. DEALERSHIP COULD NOT GET VEHICLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM ON EITHER OCCASION. HOWEVER, TO APPEASE ME, DEALERSHIP DID REPLACE ACCELERATOR PEDAL...VEHICLE STILL PRESENTS SAME STALLING ISSUE, AND INTERMITTENTLY GOES INTO "LIMP HOME" MODE FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THIS WILL UNDOUBTEDLY CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, AS IT IS OBVIOUS, FROM THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE, THAT THIS IS A MASS DEFECT. *TR
THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER BROKE WITHOUT MUCH FORCE BEING PLACED ON IT. THE PLASTIC USED TO CONSTRUCT IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN OF GOOD QUALITY. THE PART ITSELF IS COSTING ME $100 FOR THE LEVER AND ANOTHER $100 FOR LABOR. THIS SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE WITH CARS. I'VE NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE THAT HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE. THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER HAS A STEEL REINFORCEMENT BAR GOING UP PART OF IT. WHERE THE BAR STOPS IS WHERE THE PIECE BROKE OFF. IT DIDN'T EVEN SNAP. THE PLASTIC JUST SORT OF PEELED AWAY. NOT WHAT I EXPECT OUT OF ANY CAR, ESPECIALLY A VOLVO. *TR
THE DASH INFORMATION SYTEM WILL RANDOMLY GO BLANK AND DISPLAY SRS AND BRAKE FAILURE, ALONG WITH ALL INFORMATION LIGHTS BLINKING ON AND OFF. ALSO THE ANALOG GAUGES LIKE THE SPEEDOMETER AND FUEL GAUGE WILL GO TO "0" AND EMPTY OR JUST MOVE ERATICALLY TO ANY NUMBER OR POSITION WHILE DRIVING. AT NIGHT SOMETIMES THE ENTIRE DASH OR INFORMATION CENTER WILL GO BLACK (NO LIGHTS AT ALL) AND ON ODD OCCASIONS ONE HEADLIGHT MAY GO OUT AND COME BACK ON. *TR

THE OEM JACK THAT CAME WITH MY VOLVO FAILED MISERABLY WHEN I HAD A FLAT TIRE. THE JACK WAS NEVER USED BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. WHILE THE JACK WAS PLACED ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND WAS COMPLETELY VERTICAL, THE FORCE NECESSARY TO SPIN THE JACK HANDLE CAUSED THE JACK TO VERY SLOWLY SLIDE SIDEWAYS IN AN INCREASINGLY PRECARIOUS POSITION. I STOPPED AND STARTED OVER SEVERAL TIMES ONLY TO RENDER THE SAME RESULT. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, I WAS ABLE RAISE THE CAR HIGH ENOUGH TO ATTEMPT REMOVAL OF THE FLAT TIRE. THE JACK HOWEVER WAS VERY UNSTABLE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE THE TIRE, THE JACK FAILED AND THE CAR FELL TO THE GROUND. LUCKILY, THE FLAT TIRE WAS STILL ON THE CAR. SINCE I WAS IN MY PAVED DRIVEWAY, I WAS ABLE TO USE ANOTHER JACK. SINCE IT WASN'T A VOLVO JACK, I WAS ABLE TO USE WOODEN BLOCKS TO CRIB OR SECURE THE CAR BY STACKING WOOD UNDER THE CAR AS THE JACK RAISED THE CAR SO IT WOULDN'T FALL OFF THE JACK. THE VOLVO JACK IS BENT AND UNSAFE TO USE AGAIN, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T SAFE TO USE THE FIRST TIME. I AM REPORTING IT AS I HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER VOLVO OWNERS ON THE WEB WHO HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR VOLVOS. *TR

THE DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR, BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTS. THE POWERTRAIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 63,000.

THE VEHICLE IS A 2003 VOLVO MODEL S-60 T-5, PURCHASED MAY 6, 2006. AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER THE WARRANTY OF 50,000 MILES AND WAS SERVICED FOR WARRANTY ITEMS BY RICKENBAUGH VOLVO. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 60,500 MILES. UPON USING THE SEAT WARMERS FOR THE FIRST TIME DECEMBER 27, 2006, A SMALL HOLE BURNED IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT FROM THE SEAT HEATING ELEMENT. SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE HOLE WHEN I DISCOVERED THE ISSUE AND I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE SEAT WARMER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY (DECEMBER 27, 2006) TO VOLVO PARTS, INC. FOR INSPECTION. THERE IS A SHORT IN THE HEATING ELEMENT THAT MAKES THIS VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I CALLED THE VOLVO CORPORATION CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT SAME DAY AND WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT BE REPAIRED BY THE VOLVO CORPORATION BECAUSE IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I PHONED RICKENBAUGH VOLVO THAT SAME DAY AND WAS TOLD THE HEATING ELEMENT AND PAD WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $630.00. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE HEATING ELEMENT WAS IMPROPERLY INSTALLED CAUSING A SHORT, OR THE ELEMENT IS DEFECTIVE. IN ANY CASE, THE PRODUCT WAS DEFECTIVE WHEN IT WAS STILL UNDER A WARRANTY OR IMPROPERLY INSTALLED AT THE TIME OF MANUFACTURE, BUT INSTEAD OF ADDRESSING THE SAFETY ISSUE, THE VOLVO CORPORATION IS FOLLOWING ITS STANDARD PROCEDURE OF HIDING BEHIND ITS WARRANTY TERMS. THIS IS WHAT CONCERNS ME THE MOST. THERE WAS NO INJURY TO A PERSON, HOWEVER, THE LEATHER SEAT NOW HAS A HOLE FROM THE SMALL FIRE CAUSED BY THE HEATING ELEMENT. I HAVE NOT REPAIRED THE DEFECTIVE ELEMENT BECAUSE OF COST. PLEASE ADVISE ME AS TO WHAT DANGER THIS MAY PRESENT, OR WHAT OTHER OPTIONS I HAVE IN THIS COMPLAINT PROCESS. WHILE DRIVING ON I-290 THE ENGINE OF MY 2003 VOLVO S60 SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER. I NARROWLY ESCAPED SEVERAL SERIOUS ACCIDENTS ON A BUSY CHICAGO HIGHWAY. WHEN THE CAR LOSES POWER THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THE OPERATOR CAN DO TO MOVE OVER TO THE SIDE. I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 60 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STALLED, AND I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AFTER APPROX. 30-60 SECONDS. THE PROBLEMS EXHIBITED BY THE CAR ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE RECENT RECALL THAT VOLVO HAS ANNOUNCED FOR VOLVO VEHICLES. MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER THREE TIMES FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE THIRD TIME THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE ECM. THE FAILURE CONTINUED AFTER THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TURBO WAS REPLACED BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000.

THE CAR STALLED REPEATEDLY WHILE THE ENGINE WAS IDLING. ALL POWER WAS LOST MAKING THE CAR VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND BRAKE. I NEARLY GOT INTO SEVERAL ACCIDENTS THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE: 1) STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT 2) WHILE SHIFTING GEARS ON THE HIGHWAY 3) WHILE SHIFTING GEARS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES BEFORE THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY FIXED. THE FOLLOWING ITEMS WERE REPLACED BUT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM: 1) FUEL PUMP 2) MAP SENSOR (REPLACED 2 TIMES) NEITHER OF THESE FIXES WORKED. THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED AFTER MODIFYING THE SOFTWARE ON THE COMPUTER BOARD. *JB

IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE STALLS WITHOUT WARNING. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND PROVIDE A REMEDY. THE 2003 S60 WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,000.

RECENTLY WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS AROUND 40 MPH MY CAR EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF SPEED AND THEN STALLED. EACH EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN PRECEDED BY A BRIEF LOSS AND THEN BY A MORE PROLONGED LOSS AND FINALLY A COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE WHICH LOCKS UP STEERING. IN EACH INSTANCE THE CAR HAS RESTARTED. THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS MOST LIKELY A FAILURE OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE (ETM). STEPS ARE CURRENTLY BEING TAKEN TO REPLACE THE ETM. *NM

AS SOON AS I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP AND GOT ON THE HIGHWAY THE CAR STALLED AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER. THEY SERVICED THE CAR AGAIN AND TOLD ME THE WATER IN THE GAS RUSTED SOME SCREEN IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. THEY REPLACED IT AND THUS FAR THE CAR HASN'T' STALLED BUT THERE IS STILL SOME HESITATION WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS. *NM

THE CAR HAS SUDDENLY STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION TWICE IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS BUT WOULD RE-START ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. LAST NIGHT, IT STALLED GOING 70 MPH ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY WITH NO WARNING WHATSOEVER. I LOST ALL POWER IMMEDIATELY AND HAD TO MANEUVER OVER LANES OF TRAFFIC TO PULL OVER WITHOUT POWER STEERING. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR AND SAID THEY'VE HAD NO OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS SORT. HOWEVER, JUST TONIGHT I SAW A NEWS REPORT ON CHANNEL 8 NEWS IN WASH DC STATING THAT VOLVO IS BEING INVESTIGATED FOR CLAIMS OF THIS EXACT TYPE. DID NOT SEE ANY MENTION OF THE S60 MODEL SO THOUGHT I WOULD REPORT MY INCIDENT TO BE INCLUDED IN THE INVESTIGATION. *NM
DURING NORMAL CITY AND HIGHWAY DRIVING, MY 2003 VOLVO S-60 SEDANS ENGINE AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SUDDENLY FAILS WITHOUT WARNING, RESULTING IN A DANGEROUS COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER AND CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS TRAVELING ON I-65 FROM LOUISVILLE, KY TO CHICAGO, ILLINOIS AND ENCOUNTERED SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AFTER DRIVING 205 MILES AT STEADY FREEWAY SPEEDS. THE CAR (VOLVO S60, 2003 MODEL) SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND SPEED FROM 70 MPH. I PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AT A SPEED OF 40 MPH AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I WAITED 10 MINUTES AND THEN STARTED THE ENGINE AND REENTERED THE HIGHWAY AND WAS ABLE TO ACCELERATE TO 70 MPH. AFTER ABOUT 3-5 MINUTES THE SAME LOSS OF POWER OCCURRED AND THE ENGINE TURNED OFF AND THE OIL LIGHT REMAINED ON. I ONCE AGAIN PULLED OFF TO THE SHOULDER, TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND CALLED FOR TOW ASSISTANCE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A VOLVO DEALER IN , INDIANA (NAPLETON AUTO) AND LEFT FOR 24 HRS. DEALER REPORTED NO DIAGNOSTIC EVIDENCE OF PROBLEM AND WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM ON NON-HIGHWAY DRIVE TESTS. I SUBSEQUENTLY DROVE THE CAR ON A RETURN TRIP TO LOUISVILLE, KY ( 350 MI.) BUT WITH SEVERAL STOPS ALONG THE WAY TO REST THE ENGINE. THIS LOSS OF POWER CREATED A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY RISK. WHEN THE LOSS OF POWER OCCURRED I HAD A FAST MOVING TRUCK BEHIND ME AND AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT BY QUICKLY MOVING TO THE SHOULDER. I WAS VERY DISTRESSED BY THIS EXPERIENCE. *NM

HER CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 2 TIMES PREVIOUSLY FOR HESITATION AND DELAYS, AND THEY KEPT TELLING HER IT WAS CHIP RELATED .THE LAST TWO INCIDENTS OCCURRED AT RELATIVE HIGHER SPEEDS THAN THE FIRST TIME. CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR ONE WEEK, AND SHE DID HEAR FROM THE SERVICE DEALERSHIP LAST NIGHT. HE TOLD HER HE THOUGHT IT WAS A FUEL PRESSURE ISSUE AND HE WAS GOING TO CALL IN A SPECIALIST. *AK

BETWEEN 12/2004-6/2005 MY 2003 VOLVO S60 LOST POWER/ POWER DECREASES AT VARYING SPEEDS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WAS ON THE HWY GOING 65 MPH. I HAD JUST ACCELERATED TO GET ONTO THE HWY IN FRONT OF A SEMI TRUCK. MY CAR REACHED 65-70 MPH AND BEGAN TO DROP SPEEDS - 65 TO 55 TO 50 TO 40 WITH IN SECONDS. THE SEMI ALMOST RAN OVER ME BECAUSE THE SPEEDS DROPPED SO FAST. I CAUSED 2 OTHER CARS ON THE HWY TO GO ONTO THE SIDE RAMP OTHERWISE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A HORRIBLE CRASH WITH THE SEMI. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES COMPLAINING OF THE SAME PROBLEM. THE FINAL TIME STATING NOT TO GIVE THE CAR BACK UNTIL IT WAS FIXED. THE DEALER SAID THEY DOWNLOADED NEW SOFTWARE TO THE CAR? IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN THEY CAN INSTALL A BLACK BOX TO RECORD WHAT IS GOING ON. WHAT IF THE NEXT TIME THE SEMI DOES CRASH INTO ME? THE FIRST TIME THEY HAD THE CAR THE LABELED AS PEDAL POSITION SENSOR INSTALL/REPLACE? THE SECOND TIME THE INVOICE READS PRESSURE SENSOR INTAKE AIR REPLACED? ULTIMATELY, I SAW THE REPORT IN THE NEWS AND RECOGNIZED THE ISSUE TO EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CAR. I NOTICED THAT YOU DID NOT INCLUDE 2003 S60'S IN YOUR REPORT.
