I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM BMW STSTING THERE WAS NOW A RECALL FOR THE BAD GROUND WIRE ON THE REAR TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY THAT CAUSED THE METLING OF THE CONNECTOR. I HAD ALREADY SPENT $400 FOR THE FIX, NOW THEY RECALL THE PART. BMW NORTH AMERICA TOOK TOO LONG TO DO THIS, AND I AM GOING INTO THE DELAERSHIP TO SEE ABOUT GETTING A REFUND FOR THE SERVICE I PAID FOR THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER.
HEADLAMP BULB OUT AND UPON REPLACEMENT IT WAS NOTED THE COATED WIRING TO THE XENON SYSTEM TO RIGHT AND LEFT HEADLIGHT IS BRITTLE (THE WIRES PLASTIC COATING IS FALLING OFF)AND IN SOME PLACES EXPOSED WIRING WAS FOUND. ELECTRICAL TAPE NEED TO WRAP THE WIRING TO AVOID POTENTIAL FIRE. LATE NOTICE TO THIS SITE I WAS UNAWARE TO FILE A REPORT. OTHERS ALSO HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SAME ISSUES.
AT AROUND 20K MILES, THE SMG (SEQUENTIAL MANUAL GEARBOX W/ PADDLE SHIFTERS) ON MY '04 325CI BEGAN EXPERIENCING MANY OF THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT I'VE READ ABOUT REGARDING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AFTER A COLD NIGHT, THE SMG WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE. IT WOULD KEEP "CLUNKING" OVER AND OVER, CONTINUALLY LOUDER, UNTIL I SHIFTED BACK INTO NEUTRAL. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO BMW, WHERE THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANNY. AT 83K MILES, I'M STARTING TO NOTICE SOME OF THE SAME PROBLEMS AGAIN. ADDITIONALLY, WITH BOTH TRANNYS, THE CAR DELAYS ITS ACCELERATION FOR ABOUT A SECOND OR TWO WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP. THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PROBLEM. ON TOP OF THAT, MY ALTERNATOR JUST WENT OUT AFTER A COLD NIGHT. IN MY OPINION, BMW'S (AT LEAST MINE) DO NOT LIKE THE COLD! *TR
MY 2004 BMW 325XI SEDAN WAS ABOUT TO CAREFULLY BACK INTO A SERVICE BAY FROM JUST OUTSIDE THE GARAGE DOOR. AWARE OF THE NEED FOR PRECISION AND CARE (THERE WERE PEOPLE AND ITEMS NEAR THE BAY), I SHIFTED INTO REVERSE, THEN VERY GENTLY STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THERE WAS A MOMENTARY HESITATION, THEN THE CAR BEGAN TO GO BACKWARD SLOWLY FOR ABOUT A HALF SECOND AND THEN, WITHOUT ANY ACTION ON MY PART, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY ROARED TO LIFE AND THE CAR WENT BACKWARDS AT TREMENDOUS SPEED. WITHIN ABOUT TWO SECONDS IT HAD GONE BACK SOME 40+ FEET AND, BECAUSE I HAD TURNED THE WHEEL A BIT BEFORE MOVING THE CAR, THE REAR PIVOTED ALMOST 90 DEGREES AND RAN INTO A GARAGE SIDE WALL ANOTHER 40 OR SO FEET AWAY. AN EMPLOYEE MAY HAVE BEEN BRUSHED AS THE CAR HIT THE WALL NEAR HIM. THE EVENT HAPPENED SO QUICKLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY THAT I HAD NO TIME TO EVEN STEP ON THE BRAKE. I AM A SKILLED DRIVER AND AT NO TIME DID I STEP HARD ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. MAJOR DAMAGE TO TRUNK, REAR PANEL AND TWO DOORS OCCURRED. IN MY CA 50 YEARS OF DRIVING I HAVE HAD ONLY ONE PREVIOUS ACCIDENT. THAT WAS IN FEBRUARY 2007 WHEN, AS I SHIFTED INTO REVERSE IN AN ICY PARKING LOT, A GENTLE PUSH ON THE ACCELERATOR RESULTED IN A SUDDEN RACING OF THE ENGINE AND RESULTED IN VERY RAPID BACKWARD RUSH OF THE CAR. IT HIT A BRICK WALL BEHIND IT AND RESULTED IN MAJOR REAR END DAMAGE. IT WAS THE VERY SAME CAR AS IN THE 2009 ACCIDENT DESCRIBED ABOVE. THE 2007 EVENT WAS ATTRIBUTED TO ICE ON THE PAVEMENT AND NOT FURTHER INVESTIGATED. THE CAR WAS THEN FULLY REPAIRED BY BMW IN ROCHESTER NY. *TR
THE REAR TURN SIGNALS REPEATEDLY FAIL. THE WIRING IS MELTED. WHILE THIS ISSUE IS ADDRESSED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V438000, MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE MORE CARS. I CALLED BMW CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY ARE INDIFFERENT TO THIS ISSUE AND COMPLETELY UNCONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY ISSUES CREATED BY THEIR NEGLIGENT MANUFACTURING. THANKS, *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW 325I. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 10 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE ENGINE AND WATER WAS ENTERING THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE WHO STATED THAT THE DEALER NEEDED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE OF $10,000. THEY OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
UNRELIABLE TAILLIGHT/BRAKELIGHT/TURN SIGNAL FUNCTIONING IN 2004 BMW 325XI. PROBLEM BEGAN IN EARLY 2008. LIGHTING INDICATORS KEPT COMING ON SUGGESTING TAILLIGHTS WERE OUT. REPLACED ALL APPLICABLE BULBS SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST YEAR THEN FINALLY BROUGHT TO DEALER. THEY SAID THAT THEY HAVE SEEN MANY OF THESE INSTANCES WHERE THEY NEED TO REPLACE CARRIER, HARNESS AND ADD A GROUND WIRE TO FIX THE ISSUE IN ORDER TO GET LIGHTS WORKING AGAIN. DANGEROUS AT NIGHT. UNFORTUNATELY NO RECALLS, HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT A NORMAL WEAR ITEM AND IF A DEALERSHIP NEEDS TO GO BACK IN AND CHANGE WIRING TO MAKE IT WORK, THAN IT'S SIMPLY A DESIGN FLAW AND THE CONSUMER SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE. NEEDLESS TO SAY, $700 LATER, I HAD TO GET IT FIXED TO ENSURE SAFE DRIVING. *TR
A LIQUID FORMS IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR WHICH HINDERS THE ABILITY TO SEE WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE. THEN SOME OF THE LIQUID DRAINS FROM THE REAR VIEW MIRROR AND ALL OVER THE CENTER CONSOLE' RUINING THE LEATHER. BMW REFUSES TO REPLACE. *TR
AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS DEFECTIVE LIGHT BULBS (ONE FROM TWO DIFFERENT SETS FAILED WHEN ONE SET WAS INSTALLED FOR MY TURN SIGNAL AND THE OTHER FROM MY BRAKE LIGHTS), BUT AS I BEGAN TO DO MORE RESEARCH ONLINE, I FOUND THAT OTHER PEOPLE WERE HAVING AN ISSUE SIMILAR TO MINE. THEY REPORTED THAT THERE SEEMED TO BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT WOULD CAUSE CORROSION AND A LOOSE CONNECTION. SO I DECIDED TO CHECK MY CAR OUT AS WELL AND DISCOVERED THAT THE PROBLEM HAD AFFLICTED MY VEHICLE AS WELL. I THEN FOLLOWED THE LINK TO THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN RELEASED BY BMW, AND THE PROBLEM THAT I AM HAVING IS JUST AS THEY HAVE DESCRIBED. ONE OF THE 8-PIN REAR LAMP CONNECTORS HAS MELTED CAUSING A LOOSE CONNECTION AND MY CAR CONTINUING TO TELL ME THAT I HAVE A DEAD BULB, WHEN IN FACT IT IS THE CONNECTION. *TR
SEAT BELT MALFUNCTION. 2004 BMW WITH 44000 MILES. *TR

THE WIRE THAT PLUGS INTO THE DRIVER SIDE REAR TAIL LIGHT HARNESS BURNED WHICH MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE DRIVER TO ALERT OTHERS OF HIS INTENTIONS REGARDING DIRECTION OF TRAVEL AND SPEED. TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN # 10020856(EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS) SUMMARIZES THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN REMEDIED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 59,770. UPDATED 12/09/09 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE SAME FAILURE HAPPENED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT GROUNDING WHICH CAUSED THE BURNOUT OF THE TAIL LIGHT WIRING.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW 325I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AT NIGHT WITH THE HEADLIGHTS TURNED ON, THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE BRIGHT ENOUGH TO SEE PAST THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. AIR BAG LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. AIR CONDITION FAILURE. SEVERAL ELECTRICAL COMPONENT FAILURES. INCIDENT OCCURRED AT IDLE SPEED AT STOPLIGHT. CURRENTLY WINDOW SYSTEM FAILURE DUE TO AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT. WINDOW WERE SLOW TO ROLL PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. REPORTED TO BMW DENIED FOR WARRANTY COVERAGE. REAR SIDE HIGHWAY SPEED CONTACT AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY RESULTING IN MEDICAL INJURY ON OCTOBER 11TH 2013. WINDOW NOW INOPERABLE BMW STILL FAILS TO ACKNOWLEDGE ANY RESPONSIBILITY TO DESIGN FLAW. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 BMW 325I. THE REAR INDICATOR WARNING LIGHT CAME ON TELLING ME THE LIGHT WAS OUT. THE LIGHT WAS NOT OUT. I HAD TO GET A STATE INSPECTION AS I LIVE IN VIRGINIA. THE DEALER WOULD NOT PASS MY CAR DUE TO THE DASHBOARD INDICATOR BEING ON. THE ESTIMATE WAS $367. I DECLINED THE WORK AND TRIED TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG ON MY OWN. I DISCOVERED YOU ALL STARTED AN INVESTIGATION ON 4/9/09 ON THIS ISSUE. I ALSO FOUND INTERNAL DOCUMENTS FROM BMW ON THE WEB DESCRIBING THE "DEFECT". THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH GROUNDING WIRES AND IT CAUSES MELTING AND CORROSION. THIS IS DANGEROUS. THEY KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND ARE RIPPING OF THE PUBLIC FOR ROUGHLY $350 TO $400 A TAIL LIGHT TO FIX THE DEFECT. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE A PART NUMBER FOR THE EXTRA GROUND WIRE. THE SAY IN THEIR DOCUMENT TO PURCHASE "BROWN WIRE" FROM A LOCAL SOURCE AND CHARGE $1 TO $2 FOR IT. I HAVE LOOKED INSIDE MY TAIL LIGHT AND IT IS MELTING IN SPOTS. I AM WORRIED ABOUT A FIRE AND FEEL THAT BMW SHOULD PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. THEY HAVE ADMITTED A DEFECT. IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. BOUGHT MY VEHICLE BRAND NEW FROM BMW DEALERSHIP & AFTER ABOUT 5 YEARS OF HAVING MY CAR, I NOTICED THAT MY XENON HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT SHINING AS BRIGHT AS THEY USUALLY DID. OVER TIME I EVENTUALLY HAD TO USE THE HIGH BEAMS AT NIGHT IN ORDER TO SEE WHILE DRIVING. I HAD THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT REPLACED AFTER AN ACCIDENT IN NOV 2010 & RECENTLY WENT TO HAVE THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT CHECKED TO SEE WHY IT WASN'T ILLUMINATING AS IT SHOULD BE. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PROTECTIVE SHEATH COVERING THE WIRES IN THE HEADLIGHT HAD DRY ROTTED/DESINTEGRATED & THERE WAS HARDLY ANY SHEATH COVERING THE WIRES, DUE TO THE HEAT GENERATED BY THE XENON LIGHT. IN ADDITION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PROJECTOR BULB REFLECTOR HAD MELTED & BURNED OUT, ALSO DUE TO THE HEAT GENERATED BY THE XENON LIGHT & IS WHY THE LIGHT NO LONGER ILLUMINATES AS IT SHOULD. I CONTACTED BMW DUE TO MY FINDINGS & BECAUSE MANY OTHER BMW OWNERS WITH THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL VEHICLE HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR ISSUES & BMW HAS BEEN UNWILLING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. THERE IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN THE LIGHT DESIGN GIVEN THE NUMBER OF OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE AND THE FACT THAT ZKW & BMW HAS SINCE CHANGED THE DESIGN OF THE XENON HEADLIGHT IN NEWER MODELS & THE NEWER DESIGN DOESN'T HAVE THIS ISSUE. BMW NEED TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS DESIGN DEFECT & REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT WITH THE NEWER DESIGN BECAUSE REPLACING THE HEADLIGHT COSTS OVER $1200 DOLLARS EACH LIGHT & BEING THAT THE REPLACEMENT LIGHTS HAVE THE SAME DESIGN DEFECT YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF HAVING TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHTS EVERY 4 TO 5 YEARS BECAUSE IT TO WILL BURN OUT AND THE PROJECTOR BULB REFLECTOR IS NOT SOLD SEPARATELY & THE ENTIRE LIGHTS HAS TO BE REPLACED. I CAN VISIBLY SEE AREAS ON THE REPLACED HEADLIGHT WHERE THE PROJECTOR BULB REFLECTOR HAS ALREADY STARTED TO MELT & BURN & I HAVE ONLY HAD THAT LIGHT A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. *TR
THIS IS A FORMAL PETITION FOR A SAFETY DEFECT INVESTIGATION. MY 2004 BMW 325XI HAS A LEFT TAIL LIGHT THAT DOES NOT WORK BECAUSE OF A POOR CONNECTION AT THE REAR LAMP CONNECTOR (THE GROUND WIRE RECEPTACLE AND HOUSING HAVE BURNT OUT BECAUSE THE GROUND IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR THE CURRENT). MY RIGHT TAIL LIGHT STILL FUNCTIONS BUT I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIS SIDE BURNING OUT AS WELL AND POSING A POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARD. BMW HAS ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN (SI B 63 03 06) WHICH ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE AND SAYS THAT THE CAUSE IS "MINOR CORROSION AT THE 8-PIN REAR LAMP CONNECTOR CREATES HIGH RESISTANCE CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE CONNECTOR HOUSING." BMW HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT WITHOUT A PROPERLY FUNCTIONING TAIL LIGHT. *TR
I RECENTLY REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES ON MY PASSENGER CAR (2004 BMW 325XI). AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON WHICH TO BUY, WE BELIEVED THE RATING IN CONSUMER'S REPORTS AND PURCHASED 4 CONTINENTAL PRO CONTACT TIRES (ORDER WAS PLACED ON 3/3/2009 AND THE TIRES WERE INSTALLED AT TIRE RACK ON 3/6/2009). I HAD A SERVICE CALL ON THIS CAR IN FEBRUARY (2/10/2009) AND THE RECORDED MILES FROM THE VOB SERVICE DEPARTMENT WERE 29,750. ON THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT (4/18/2009), THE MILES ON THIS CAR WERE 30,906. THEREFORE, THE NEW TIRES HAD FAR LESS THAN 1000 MILES ON THEM. AT ABOUT 8:15 PM ON 4-18-2009, WE HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT (RIGHT REAR TIRE) GOING CLOSE TO 70 MPH ON I-95 IN MARYLAND. THE STEEL SIDEWALL COMPLETELY SEPARATED ON THIS TIRE. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AND STRUGGLED TO GET THE CAR OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. ALTHOUGH IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS (IT WAS DARK AND LOTS OF TRUCKS AND CARS WERE SPEEDING ON THE HIGHWAY) WE EXITED THE CAR BECAUSE WE WERE CONCERNED ANOTHER VEHICLE MIGHT REAR END IT (EVEN THOUGH THE FLASHERS WERE ON). WE CALLED THE POLICE BECAUSE WE WERE HAVING TROUBLE GIVING THE EXACT LOCATION ( WE WERE NOT BY A MILE MARKER) TO A TOWING SERVICE. THE POLICE DID NOT COME OUT. WE EVENTUALLY GOT A TOW TRUCK TO CHANGE THE TIRE. LUCKILY MY SPARE WAS FULL SIZED AND IN GOOD SHAPE. MY RIM AND THE TIRE ITSELF DO NOT LOOK LIKE THERE WAS A MAJOR ROAD HAZARD. WE BELIEVE THE TIRE FAILED. AFTER THE BLOW OUT INCIDENT, MY AUTOMATIC BRAKING SYSTEM LIGHT IS LIT. WE DON'T KNOW IF THE ABS SYSTEM HAS BEEN AFFECTED. ALTHOUGH WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED (THIS WAS VERY SCARY) NO ONE WAS INJURED. WE ARE TRYING TO GET A RESPONSE FROM THE TIRE INSTALLER (TIRE RACK) AND THE TIRE MANUFACTURER (CONTINENTAL). *TR
HEAD LIGHTS ARE VERY DIM. REFLECTORS ARE BURNED. HEADLIGHTS DO NOT PROJECT ON THE ROAD. CANNOT SEE AT NIGHT. *TR
1. OVER THE LIFETIME OF THE VEHICLE THE XENON BULBS ARE HOT ENOUGH TO BURN THE PLASTIC REFLECTOR THAT SHINES THE LIGHT ON THE ROAD. AS THIS REFLECTOR BOWL BURNS INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLE LIGHT OUTPUT IS SEVERELY DIMINISHED BY AT LEAST 60-70% THIS POSED A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO MYSELF AND OTHERS. 2. THE HEADLIGHTS MADE BY ZKW WERE INSTALLED ON BMW SEDAN'S MODEL YEARS 2003-2004 ONLY. IT IS A CONSTANT OCCURRENCE AND IS VERY DANGEROUS. I CANNOT SEE THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME WITHOUT MY FOG LIGHTS. 3. I WAS FORCED TO PURCHASE TWO NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES THAT WERE PRICED AT $1,000 PER SIDE. THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE WHICH IS VERY TROUBLESOME FOR THOUSANDS OF OWNERS OF THIS MODEL YEAR CAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW 325I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAULTY LAMP WARNING INDICATOR WOULD INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS THAT PLUGS INTO THE REAR OF THE LAMP HARNESS FOR THE EXTERIOR LIGHTING HAD A FAULTY GROUND IN THE CONNECTOR. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE WIRES COULD NOT TAKE THE HEAT DISTRIBUTION, WHICH CAUSED THE WIRES TO FRY INSIDE THE CONNECTOR. THE FAILURE ALSO CAUSED THE TURN SIGNALS AND REAR LAMPS TO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY. THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURES; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO LOCATE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS PERTAINING TO THE ISSUES (NHTSA ITEM NUMBERS 10025585 AND 10020856). THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 85,000.
THE ZKW-BRAND XENON HEADLIGHTS THAT CAME EQUIPPED ON THE VEHICLE (A 2004 BMW 330I) HAVE LOST THEIR BRIGHTNESS INTENSITY, RESULTING IN NIGHTTIME LIGHT OUTPUT THAT IS DANGEROUSLY LOW. THE PROBLEM SPECIFICALLY IS THAT THE HEAT FROM THE PROJECTOR BULBS MELT OR DISCOLOR THE REFLECTIVE BOWLS, WHICH DECREASES THE HIGH- AND LOW-BEAM LIGHT OUTPUT. THE HEAT ALSO DISCOLORS THE PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENSES. THE BULBS STILL THROW A VERY LOW LEVEL OF LIGHT, BUT WITHOUT THE REFLECTIVITY THEY DO LITTLE TO ILLUMINATE THE ROAD AT NIGHT. SERVICE RECORDS INDICATE THAT BMW NOTED THE PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE IN THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF 2009, BUT IF THE PARTS WERE REPLACED THEY HAVE FAILED AGAIN SINCE THEN. THIS IS A NON-WEAR ITEM. MANY OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS HAVE ALSO REPORTED THIS PROBLEM. *TR

COMPARED TO A NEW MODEL AT DEALER WITH XENON LIGHTS AND FOUND VERY NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE. MECHANIC ANALYSIS FOUND METALLIZED PLASTIC REFLECTORS ON XENON BULBS HAD BURNED AND LOST THEIR REFLECTIVITY. REPLACEMENT REFLECTORS ARE NOT SOLD AS SERVICE PARTS BY BMW, SO REMEDY INVOLVES COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. *TR

MY CONCERN IS THE OTHER AIRBAGS: CONCERN FOR SPONTANEOUS DEPLOYMENT. I AM GLAD IT WAS ME (MALE) DRIVING. IF MY WIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 BMW 330I, THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR AIR BAG SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED. NO ACCIDENT, NO COLLISION, NO POT HOLE. NOTHING TO EXPLAIN THE DEPLOYMENT. THE DEALERSHIP FIRST CLAIMED, "THERE WAS A COLLISION". WHEN IT WAS DISCERNED THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF A COLLISION, THEIR STORY WAS "THERE WAS A 'POT HOLE' HIT". AFTER DESCRIBING THE SMOOTH DRIVING CONDITIONS ON THE STREET THIS OCCURRED, THEIR STORY WAS " THE VEHICLE WENT 'AIR-BORNE'". ALL OF THE DEALERSHIPS CONCLUSIONS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE BASED ON "COMPUTER" EVIDENCE. ONCE I REALIZED I WAS GOING TO GET NOWHERE WITH THE DEALERSHIP, I DECIDED TO TAKE MY CAR AND GO HOME. I WAS INJURED IN THE LEFT SIDE WHEN THE DOOR PANEL BLEW OPEN AND THE BAG DEPLOYED. ON 14 SEPTEMBER 2008 I WAS INVOLVED IN A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVOLVING MY 2004 BMW 330CI CONVERTIBLE. WE HAD A VEHICLE RUN A LEFT TURN RED LIGHT INTO US AS WE WERE PASSING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION IN KENT WA. I ESTIMATE THE IMPACT WAS PROBABLY EQUIVALENT TO A 50 TO 60 MPH COLLISION. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY BUT THE ROLL OVER ROLL BAR DID. WITH THE RECALL OF AIR BAGS FOR THE BMW I THINK IT MAY ALSO APPLY TO THE 2004 3 SERIES ALSO. IF THE AIRBAGS WOULD HAVE DEPLOYED IT MAY HAVE ELIMINATED SOME ACHES AND PAINS THAT WE ARE SUFFERING FROM. THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INJURIES. DAMAGE TO THE BMW INVOLVED THE FRONT BUMPER, HOOD, AND OTHER DAMAGE TO RADIATOR FOR A TOTAL OF ABOUT 4300. I WILL BE CHECKING WITH BMW AS TO WHAT SPEED SHOULD THE AIR BAGS DEPLOY. *TR
THE HOUSING FOR THE XENON LIGHT BULBS ARE DEFECTIVE AND THE LIGHTING OUTPUT IS VERY BAD. THE XENON BULB ITSELF IS FINE BUT THE HOUSING IS BURNT AND IT IS GETTING WORSE. *TR
MY 2004 BMW 330I, WITH ZKW PRODUCED HEADLIGHT COMPONENTS, SUFFERS FROM WHAT APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE PROJECTOR BULB REFLECTORS BURNING AFTER APPROXIMATELY 50,000 MILES OF DRIVING TIME. THIS RESULTS IN A DIMINISHED LIGHT OUTPUT, AND IS A DEFINITE SAFETY CONCERN. EVERY SUMMER SINCE 2008 WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FULL OR NEAR FULL, FUEL DRIPS FROM THE GAS TANK DURING HOT WEATHER. REPLACING THE SOLENOID AS WAS RECOMMENDED HAS NOT SOLVED THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE FOUND THE GAS DRIPPING ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS DURING HOT WEATHER ONLY WHEN THE TANK IS FULL OR NEAR FULL. THIS OCCURS WITH THE CAR BEING PARKED IN THE SUN WITH THE ENGINE NOT RUNNING. LAST MONTH, SEPTEMBER 2012 AFTER RETURNING TO MAY CAR AFTER WORK, I HAD STARTED THE CAR FIRST, THEN WENT TO GET MY THINGS OUT OF THE TRUNK, I SAW GASOLINE POURING LIKE A FOUNTAIN UNDER THE CAR FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN SLOWED DOWN TO DRIPPING. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE CAR SINCE. WE TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY TO OUR MECHANIC. IT WAS DETERMINED TO BE LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK. BMW WANTS OVER $5000 TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK! THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE WITH THIS PROBLEM! CAN'T DRIVE IT, CAN'T SOMG IT, OR RE-REGISTER IT WITHOUT REPAIRING THE FAULTY GAS TANK! *TR
I OWN A 2004 BMW 325I AND MY REARVIEW MIRROR WITH AN AUTODIMMING FEATURE LEAKED ONTO MY CENTER CONSOLE AND FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THERE WAS NO PRIOR INDICATION OF MIRROR FAILURE BEFORE I NOTICED THE BROKEN MIRROR AND SPOTS ON THE SEAT AND CONSOLE. THE FLUID ACTUALLY BUBBLED UP AND ATE THROUGH MY CONSOLE AND CUP HOLDERS AND LEFT PERMANENT STAINS ON THE SEAT. THE DEALER IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND SO IS MAGNA DONNELLY AS IT HAS HAPPENED TO NUMEROUS CARS AS CAN BE SEEN MY TALKING TO BMW, ACURA, MAGNA DONNELLY AND INTERNET FORUMS. WE SPOKE BOTH TO THE LOCAL BMW DEALER AND BMW CORPORATE AND MAGNA DONNELLY AND WHILE THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT MY MIRROR LEAKED AND THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY WOULD DO NOTHING TO FIX IT. I HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE THE MIRROR BECAUSE MY CAR IS NOT DRIVEABLE WITHOUT IT, HOWEVER, THEY ALSO INDICATED I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO REPLACE IT WITH AN IDENTICAL MIRROR WHICH MAY LEAK IN THE FUTURE. *TR

SIDE VIEW MIRRORS BEGIN TO RUST FROM THE BOTTOM UP. THIS PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO THE HEATED MIRRORS BUT HAPPENS TO MOST 3 SERIES BMW'S, DESPITE THE CLIMATE. *TR
ZKW XENON HEADLIGHTS EQUIPPED ON THE CAR HAVE A PLASTIC REFLECTOR BOWL FOR THE LOW BEAM. THE OEM LIGHT BULB BURNS HOT AND MELTED THE PLASTIC REFLECTOR BOWL. THIS CAUSES A SEVERE LOSS OF PROJECTED LIGHT TO THE ROAD. MANY TIMES I HAVE TO DRIVE WITH HIGH BEAMS ON TO SEE MORE THAN 10-15 FT IN FRONT OF THE CAR CAUSE ME TO BLIND OTHER DRIVERS. BMW NOR ZKW RECOGNIZE THIS AS AN ISSUE AND MY DEALER SUGGESTED I BUY A WHOLE NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY FOR 1.5K (EACH SIDE) TO FIX THE ISSUE. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED BECAUSE IT IS A DESIGN FAILURE. THE LATER VERSIONS ON THE ZKW HEADLIGHTS USE METAL REFLECTOR BOWLS (NOT INTERCHANGEABLE WITH EARLIER VERSION) SO THE ISSUE IS KNOW TO THEM. *TR
THE REFLECTIVE MATERIAL IN THE XENON HEADLAMPS HAS MELTED AWAY DUE TO THE HEAT OF THE BULBS RESULTING IN DRASTICALLY REDUCED HEADLIGHT EFFECTIVENESS AT NIGHT. THIS CAUSES AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE CONDITION WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT. I HAVE DISCOVERED THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE IN 2003-2005 E46 BMW 3 SERIES AND I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER. BMW KNOWS THIS IS A DEFICIENCY AS THEY CORRECTED IT IN THEIR LATER MODELS. *TR

WHEN SHE WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE AND DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THERE WAS A MOMENTARY DELAY AND THE VEHICLE WOULD ABNORMALLY JERK FORWARD BEFORE ACCELERATING. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS NORMAL. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING BUT NO FAILURE CODES WERE PRODUCED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 57,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
DOOR LOCKS INTERMITTENTLY WILL NOT UNLOCK WITH SWITCH OR REMOTES. CENTRAL LOCKING DOES NOT WORK EVEN WHEN USING THE KEY FOB. MY KIDS AND I HAVE BEEN TRAPPED IN THE CAR ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS FOR UP TO 10 MINUTES. THIS IS A SERIOUS RISK TO MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF OTHERS ON THE ROAD. BMW REFUSES TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE VIDEO OF ME TRAPPED IN THE CAR. I ADDRESSED HIS PROBLEM WITH BMW BEFORE MY WARRANTY WAS UP BUT THEY STATE SINCE THE TECHNICIANS COULD NOT IDENTITY ANY PROBLEM IT'S NOT COVERED. THIS PROBLEM IS OCCURRING ON ALL E46 330 M54 ENGINES WITH THE ZHP(PERFORMANCE PACKAGE) THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS TO BMW NA ABOUT THIS ISSUE. AT 2000 - 3000 RPMS THE ENGINE RATTLES LIKE A COFFEE CAN FULL OF MARBLES. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO BMW BUT THEY STATED THAT THIS IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. BMW IS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE ISSUE IS THE DUAL VANOS UNIT THEY PUT INTO THE M54 ENGINE IS USING BELRIN BUSHINGS AND THEY ARE FAILING. THERE IS A COMPANY CALLED DR. VANOS THAT FIXES THIS ISSUE BY REBUILDING THE OEM VANOS WITH UPGRADED BUSHINGS. THIS UNIT COST $500, WHICH I AM NOT WILLING TO SPEND AS I HAVE A 100,000 MILE WARRANTY FROM BMW. *TR

THIS SPEED VARIANCE OR INEXACT SPEED INFORMATION COULD MISLEAD DRIVERS AS TO THE APPROPRIATE SPEED IN ICY OR RAINY WEATHER CONDITIONS AS WELL AS OTHER INSTANCES WHERE SPEED NEEDS TO BE UNDERSTOOD. DEFECT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED AS MIGHT VIOLATE VARIOUS STATE INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS AS WELL. *TR

THE ESTIMATED REPAIR COST EXCEEDED $1,000. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT OFFERED TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. BMW E46 SERIES CARS, (1999-2006), HAVE A WEAK POINT ON THE REAR SUBFRAME MOUNTING POINTS. OVER TIME, THESE POINTS TEAR AND CAUSE THE SUBFRAME TO CRACK AND BEGIN TO TEAR THE BODY AND FRAME OF THE CAR. MY 2004 BMW M3 IS EXPERIENCING THIS EXACT PROBLEM AT THE MOMENT. THERE IS NUMEROUS CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS OPEN ON THIS ISSUE AS WELL. *TR

THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO A DEALER 8 TIMES REGARDING THESE SAFETY ISSUES AND SEVERAL PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURES STILL OCCUR.
