AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE - I STARTED MY CAR, LET IT WARM UP AND MOVED THE SHIFTER TO REVERSE. THE VEHICLE JERKED (MY GLASSES FLEW OFF MY FACE) AND MADE A ROUGH GRINDING SOUND. I MOVED THE SHIFTER BACK TO PARK AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME GRINDING SENSATION AND NOISE. IT WAS TOWED AND DEALER SAID THAT THE 330CI WAS ONLY USING TWO GEARS DUE TO THE MALFUNCTION. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE ACCELARATED WITHOUT EFFORT. THERE WAS EMERGENCY BRAKING WHICH RESULTED IN THE VEHICLE HITTING A CONCRETE SUPPORT PARKING STRUCTURE ON THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE ALMOST CONTINUED OVER THE EDGE OF THE PARKING STRUCTURE WHICH WAS TWO STORIES ABOVE THE GROUND. SUBSEQUENTLY, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN HOME THE REAR ABS BRAKE LIGHTS AND THE BRAKES LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD ILLUMINATED. DURING THIS PERIOD, THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN WITHOUT APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE. ALSO, THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER AND IT WAS EXAMINED. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, THE VEHICLE WOULD NEED DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AT A CHARGE BEFORE THE BRAKES CHIP CAN BE REPLACED. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS NO ABNORMAL CODE IN THE COMPUTER.*AK
THE VEHICLE IS A 330CIC WHICH A PURCHASED IN 2007, THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM & OXYGEN SENSORS. *TR
REAR TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY (RIGHT SIDE). DASH WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES. ALL LIGHTS IN ASSY. WORK. REMOVE TAIL LIGHT ASSY, SCREW ALL BULBS OUT AND IN, REPLACE PLUG AND WARNING LIGHT IS OUT. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM. WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY WAS INFORMED OF A SILL THAT APPLIED ONLY IF WIRING OR PLASTIC ASSY WAS OBVIOUSLY DAMAGED! FAULT OCCURS RANDOMLY AT VARIOUS INTERVALS FROM WEEKLY TO MONTHLY.. *TR
BMW 2004 330CI. THE OIL LIGHT COMES UP EVERY 400-500 OR 700-800 MILES DEPENDING IF IT IS DRIVEN IN THE CITY OR HIGHWAYS. 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS CHECKED THE CAR AND REPLACED THE OIL LEVEL SENSOR, CRANKCASE VENT VALVE, VENT PIPE, VENT HOSE, RETURN PIPE, WASH PUMP SO FAR BUT THE CAR STILL HAVING THE PROBLEM. CAR GOES TO THE DEALER ONCE A MONTH APPROX. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW 325CI. WHILE PUMPING GAS INTO THE VEHICLE THE GAS TANK CAUGHT FIRE. IT WAS DETERMINED BY THE DEALERSHIP THIS COULD HAVE OCCURRED BECAUSE OF STATIC ELECTRICITY. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN APPLYING BRAKE PRESSURE THE BRAKES ID NOT COMPLETELY STOP THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS MORE PREVALENT WHEN STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT. WHILE BRAKE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED THE VEHICLE WILL SLOWLY ROLL. THIS DEFECT IS INTERMITTENT IN NATURE. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHO DISCOVERED BRAKE FLUID LEAKED IN THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP. *AK
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW 330I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS WOULD ONLY WORK INTERMITTENTLY WITH THE ILLUMINATION OF AN UNKNOWN WARNING LIGHT. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE WHO ADVISED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V438000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING: TAIL LIGHTS). THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CONTACTED WHO CONFIRMED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
CONSUMER COMPLAINT REGARDING BMW 3 SERIES HIGH FAILURE RATE OF THE EMERGENCY FLASHER SWITCH. *TS (11/08/05) THE CONSUMER SUGGESTED THAT THE EUROPEAN DESIGN BE MODIFIED WHERE THERE IS NO CUP HOLDER ADJACENT TO THE EMERGENCY FLASHER AND SWITCH TO THE USA DESIGN WHERE THE EMERGENCY FLASHER IS LESS THAN 1 INCH FROM THE CUP HOLDER. *SC
NO SING OF MALFUNCTION PRIOR TO OR SINCE INCIDENT. ENGINE CUT OFF WHILE CRUISING ON HIGHWAY. CRUISE CONTROL TURNED OFF, ALL LIGHTS IN DASH LIT UP, ENGINE CAME BACK ON AND EVERYTHING OPERATIONAL IN LESS THAN 5 SECONDS. *NM

IN 2005 WHEN DRIVING MY CAR, THE CAR BEGAN PULLING UNEVENLY, JERKING GENTLY ON ACCELERATION UP A HIGHWAY BRIDGE AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTED TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE. THE IGNITION COILS WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
DT: CONTACT STATES WHILE IN REVERSE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THE SERVICE DEALER DID NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE DEALER STATED THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE, BUT THE CONTACT DID NOT RECEIVE A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL CONCERNING TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE SERVICE DEALER STATED THAT RECALL REPAIRS WERE DONE TWICE ON THIS VEHICLE. *AK
I FIND THE HALOGEN HEADLIGHTS ON MANY CARS VERY DISTRACTING. I AM NOT SURE BUT I THINK THEY ARE ON GERMAN CARS. I AM TOLD THEY ARE WELL LIKED BY THE DRIVERS OF THE OWNERS OF THESE CARS BUT I FIND THEM HAZARDOUS FOR THE CARS WHICH ARE FACING THEM. THESE HEADLIGHTS SEEM TO ME AS DANGEROUS AS SOMEONE USING THERE HIGH LIGHTS AGAINST ONCOMING TRAFFIC. HAVE YOU HEARD THIS COMPLAINT BEFORE? IS THERE ANYTHING TO BE DONE? THANK YOU FOR A RESPONSE. WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPED ON LOW TRAFFIC STOPPED AND MOVED FORWARD, THE CLUTCH DIDN'T ENGAGE PROPERLY AND SMELLED BURNING . DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM . *AK
WHILE STOPPED, ENGINE SPEED WOULD DROP NEAR OR BELOW IDLE. HAPPENED AFTER COLD ENGINE START OR WHILE WARM AFTER DRIVING (BOTH NO-TRAFFIC AND HIGH-TRAFFIC). WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE SOFTWARE MALFUNCTIONED. *AK POWER LOSS ISSUE. *SC
SAND COLOR STRIP THAT MEETS THE DASHBOARD IS IN CONSUMER'S LINE OF VISION.*MR THE CONSUMER LIVES IN AN AREA WHERE THE TEMPERATURE IS HOT THEREFORE DECIDED TO PURCHASE HER VEHICLE WITH SAND LEATHER INTERIOR BECAUSE IT WOULD BE COOLER. THE CONSUMER LIKES THE INTERIOR BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE DASHBOARD IS BLACK WITH A SAND COLORED STRIP THAT MEETS WITH THE BLACK DASH. THE TWO COLORS CAUSE A REFLECTION ON THE WINDSHIELD WHICH RESULTS IN POOR VISIBILITY. DURING BRIGHT SUNNY DAYS IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE OUT THE WINDSHIELD. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO SUGGESTED THAT THEY REPLACE THE DASHBOARD AND THE STRIP TO ALL BLACK OR ALL SAND. *NM
BRAKE FAILURE ( DELAYED BRAKE ENGAGEMENT) ONCE UPON LEAVING THE DEALER SHIP. AGAIN 24 HOURS LATER( RESULTING IN A CRASH) AND ONE WEEK LATER WITH 600 MILES. MW CLAIMS NOTHING WRONG WITH VEHICLE. I TRADED CAR IN REFUSING TO ENDANGER MY LIVE AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS.*AK
IN 2004, THE AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR BURNED UP. A SECOND TIME, IN 2008, IT FAILED. A THIRD TIME, IN 2010, A FIREBALL EXPLODED FROM UNDER THE TRUNK. AGAIN, THE AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR HAD FAILED, AFTER WE RECEIVED IT FROM THE DEALER'S SERVICE SHOP. *JS
THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT A LOW SPEED OF 20 MPH OR LESS. THE HAS VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, HOWEVER THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *JB
THE OE BRIDEGSTONE TURANZA ER30 TIRES ON MY 2004 BMW 325I ARE DEFECTIVE ON THE SIDEWALLS. THE SIDEWALLS ARE WAY TOO WEAK TO BE PUT ON THE ROAD. MY SIDEWALLS HAVE A BUBBLE AFTER 6 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT MY NEW CAR. THIS IS INCREDIBLY A RIPOFF SINCE IF IT CAN'T EVEN LAST A YEAR, THEN IT SHOULD ONLY BE MADE FOR TOYS.
I HAVE NOTED THAT THE ZKW BRAND HID HEADLIGHTS ON MY BMW ARE LESS THAN ADEQUATE AT PROVIDING SIGNIFICANT LIGHTING FOR NIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS. I FOUND UPON DISASSEMBLY OF MY HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY THE REFLECTIVE BASE OR "BOWL" IS A COATED PLASTIC PART THAT HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY DISCOLORED FROM NORMAL USE. I AM FILING A REPORT TO HAVE NHTSA LOOK FURTHER INTO THE PROBLEM AND RECOMMEND THE PARTY RESPONSIBLE OFFER A REASONABLE FIX. CURRENTLY THE FACTORY (BMW) RECOMMENDS REPLACEMENT OF A $1200 (EACH, TWO TOTAL) HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. I REQUEST A MANDATE BY THE NHTSA FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE AFFECTED HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY'S BY BMW, AT BMW OWN COST. I FEEL THE SUB STANDARD MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF THIS VITAL PART MAY CAUSE SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISKS FOR PEOPLE WHO REQUIRE THE PROPER FUNCTION OF THE HEADLIGHT. *TR
2004 BMW 330CI 6 SPEED MANUAL - 3.0L INLINE 6 CYL. INTERMITTENT PROBLEM - IDLE BECOMES ERRATIC AND CAR STALLS. THIS HAS HAPPENED APPROX 6-8 TIMES OVER 8 MONTHS/5000 MILES. NORMALLY HAPPENS ON WARM DAYS AND AT A STOP LIGHT/STOP SIGN. IT ONCE HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN WHICH CAUSED ME TO LOSE POWER STEERING. DEALER HAS SEEN THE CAR 3+ TIMES AND UPDATED IDLE CONTROL VALVE, AND ENGINE SOFTWARE BUT PROBLEM PERSISTS. IT IS VERY INTERMITTENT AND DOESN'T THROW ANY COMPUTER FAULT CODES.*AK
I BOUGHT BMW 325XI 2004 ON 03/04 AND I NOTICED THAT IT HAS PROBLEM WITH COLD START. IN THE MORNING, WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN "D", IT DOESN'T MOVE AND THEN SUDDENLY LURCHES WITH A JERK. FIRST I THOUGHT, ITS JUST BECAUSE ITS A NEW CAR BUT WHEN I DIDN'T DRIVE IT FOR 3 DAYS AND STARTED IT, IT WAS WORSE. IT WOULDN'T MOVE AT ALL FOR LIKE A MINUTE AND THEN SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD WITH A JERK ALMOST HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT ALL 3 SERIES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 03-03 TO 11-03 HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION . WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS IF THERE IS A RECALL ON THAT. THEY DIDN'T TELL ME ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AT ALL WHEREAS NOW I READ THE MESSAGE BOARDS AND THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. I WONDER WHAT MY OPTIONS ARE? I BOUGHT THE CAR BECAUSE THERE WAS A SPECIAL DEAL ON THIS CAR. MAY BE THE DEAL WAS BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. *JB
CAR STALLED SEVERAL TIMES AT RED LIGHTS. RPM DROPPED WITH NO WARNING. ALSO EXPERIENCE ROUGH IDLING WHEN AT COMPLETE STOP. *AK
BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN DEC. TRANSMISSION FAILED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. DEALER TALKED US INTO HAVING A CLUTCH PACK REPLACEMENT AFTER SOFTWARE UPGRADE ATTEMPTS FAILED.*AK NOW THE CAR HAS A NOXIOUS STINKING SMELL EMMINATING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION EXPERT SAYS THE CLUTCH IS SLIPPING AND BURNING INSULATION. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ONTO HIGHWAY WITH THREE PASSENGERS DOWNSHIFTED FOR MORE TORQUE THE ENGINE REVVED AS IF IT WERE IN NEUTRAL. TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE. BMW DEALER AND BMWNA ARE UNWILLING TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. THEY SAY CAR IS PERFORMING NORMALLY. PLEASE HELP.
BMW 330I EXHIBITS FREQUENT ERRATIC IDLE WHEN STOPPED, AS WELL AS ENGINE STALLING. ERRATIC IDLE IS IN THE FORM OF ENGINE SPEED DROPS BELOW 400-500 RPM. STALLING SOMETIMES OCCURS AS A RESULT OF THESE IDLE SPEED DROPS. THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AMONG RECENT 330 MODEL BMW'S, AND APPARENTLY THERE IS NO KNOWN SOLUTION AT THIS TIME. *JB
ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ON 2004 BMW 325IC. *MR THE CHECK COOLANT LIGHT HAD COME ON, THEN THE OIL INDICATOR LIGHT AND THEN THE ENGINE STOPPED. THIS ALL OCCURRED WITHIN SECONDS. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT A WATER PUMP WAS NEEDED AND THAT THERE WAS A SERIOUS OIL LEAK. THE LEFT AND RIGHT WINDOWS DID NOT MOVE INTO THE LOCK POSITION. *SC *JB
THE CAR (2004 330I ZHP) OFTEN SHUDDERS AT START UP WITH AN ERRATIC IDLE AND CONTINUES TO DO SO EVEN WHEN WARM. THERE ARE NO COMPUTER FAULT CODES AND NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. IT FEELS AS IF IT IS READY TO STALL AT ANY GIVEN TIME WITH SEVERE IDLE FLUCTUATIONS OF 100-200 RPM'S DURING STOPS. PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD ACROSS DOZENS OF ZHP (PERFORMANCE PACKAGE) OWNERS AS WELL AS MANY 2003 AND 2004 3 SERIES CAR OWNERS, PARTICULARLY THOSE WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. *NM
I PURCHASED A 2004 BMW 330XI AND HAD TWO PROBLEMS THAT SURFACED IMMEDIATELY. WHEN CALLING THE DEALERSHIP, THEY BRUSHED OFF THE COMPLAINT STATING THAT THE CAR WAS NEW AND IT WOULD "SETTLE" GIVEN TIME. HOWEVER, AFTER THE PROBLEMS CONTINUED, I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO A DEALERSHIP WHO, UPON INSPECTION, TOLD ME I SIMPLY NEEDED SOME NEW PARTS. ONE BEING A TRANSMISSION (WHICH I THINK IS MORE THAN JUST A PART). APPARENTLY, THERE IS A DIRECTIVE TO BMW DEALERSHIPS HIGHLIGHTING THE PROBLEM, BUT TO DEAL WITH IT ONLY UPON CUSTOMER COMPLAINT. I FIND THIS VERY TROUBLING GIVEN THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM(S) AND THE POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY FAIL. THE ISSUES ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. AFTER ONLY 2,000 MILES, I HAD PUT AN ADDITIONAL 7 QUARTS OF OIL IN THE VEHICLE. APPARENTLY, THE OIL VALVE IS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. 2. WHEN FIRST OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE OFTEN WOULD NOT BEGIN TO MOVE UNTIL THE RPM'S REACHED ANYWHERE FROM 3-5K RPM'S. IN BOTH INSTANCES, THE BMW DEALER STATED THIS WAS DUE TO A DEFECTIVE "PART". THE REPLACEMENT OF THE OIL FILTER MAKES SENSE AS IT IS A PART. THE COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF A TRANSMISSION, HOWEVER, DOES NOT. ALTHOUGH I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT, I BELIEVE THAT THESE ISSUES CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO A MAJOR PROBLEM AND THEREFORE RESPECTFULLY REQUEST AN INVESTIGATION. *JB
I FILED A PETITION FOR A DEFECTS INVESTIGATION AS WELL AS A COMPLAINT ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH A 2004 BMW 325XI WITH A DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION, RESULTING IN DELAYED ENGAGEMENT AS WELL AS "LURCHING" OF THE VEHICLE WHEN ACCELERATING AND/OR BRAKING. VEHICLE WENT BACK FOR REPAIR - AFTER HAD SLIGHT DELAYED ENGAGEMENT AGAIN, PART FELL OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN, LOUD FLAPPING NOISE STARTED IN THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD, THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE WARNING LIGHT HAS BEEN COMING ON - 2300 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN OUT OF MY POSSESSION 4 WEEKS OF THE 3 MONTHS. THE VA OFFICE OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS HAS SUGGESTED PURSUING THE STATE'S LEMON LAW. THE BMWBOARD ON-LINE HAS MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND A PORTION OF MY PETITION (THE ADDENDUM) WAS POSTED, GIVING THE IMPRESSION THAT BMW IS VOLUNTARILY RECALLING THE AFFECTED VEHICLES ... I WAS TOLD THAT MIGHT HAPPEN, BUT I AM NOT AWARE THAT IT ACTUALLY HAS HAPPENED. I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT CARS MANUFACTURED AFTER DECEMBER 2003 ARE FREE OF THE DEFECT ... FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN READING ON THIS AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AND THE BMWBOARD, THAT IS NOT TRUE. BEWARE. IF I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS FILED A PETITION, BUT YOU ARE READING THIS AND YOU ARE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH YOUR 3 SERIES OR X5, FILE A PETITION, TOO ... THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO GET SOME ACTION FROM BMW ... THIS IS A POWDER KEG. I BOUGHT THE CAR ON DEC. 15, 2003 AND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS FROM DAY 1. THIS IS NOT GOING AWAY ... I HAVE GIVEN IT TIME; BMW HAS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM ... WITH A LOT OF INPUT FROM ME ... BECAUSE THEY HAVE TOLD ME BASICALLY THAT I'M IMAGINING THINGS ... I'M NOT ... AND STILL I HAVE A NEW PROBLEM EVERY TIME I GET IN THE CAR. THIS IS WRONG ... PLEASE SPEAK UP. THE DEALERSHIPS SEEM TO BE UNIFORMLY "POOH-POOHING" THE PROBLEM. THAT IS WRONG.
ON COLD STARTS VEHICLE DOES NOT MOVE WHEN TRANSMISSION PUT IN DRIVE. IT DELAYS FOR 10 TO 15 SECONDS TO ONE MINUTE. I WAS TOLD BY DEALER THAT IT HAS A DEFECTIVE PART AND THEY ARE CURRENTLY REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. VEHICLE HAS 2000 MILES ON IT. ALSO HAD PROBLEM WITH THE STEPTRONIC TRANSMISSION. VEHICLE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO MANUALLY SHIFT THE GEAR WHEN YOU SELECT MANUAL FOR THE CLUTCHLESS SHIFT. IT SIMPLY GETS STUCK AND THEN SHIFTS ON ITS OWN. DEALER HAD NOT HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. NOW I AM DRIVING 1 2004 X5 AS A LOANER FROM THE DEALER AND IT TOO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE STEPTRONIC TRANSMISSION WHEN YOU SELECT MANUAL. I CAN SHORTEN THE DELAY BY INCREASING THE ENGINE SPEED. THE VEHICLE WILL THEN CREEPS FORWARD UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION IS FULLY ENGAGED.
THE BMW 325XIT (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) WHICH I PURCHASED ON 2/5/2004 DEVELOPED A PROBLEM WITH FORWARD GEAR NOT ENGAGING ON A COLD START. THE VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 1000 MILES ON IT WHEN I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM. TYPICALLY ON A MORNING WHEN I BACK THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE, AND THEN SHIFT THE GEARS FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE FAILS TO MOVE FORWARD FOR 3 TO 4 SECONDS UPON RELEASING THE BRAKE. I WOULD HAVE TO PRESS DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL AND WATCH THE ENGINE REVV TO ANYWHERE BETWEEN 3-5K RPM BEFORE THE GEAR WOULD ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE CREEPS FORWARD UNTIL THE GEAR FULLY ENGAGES. THE PROBLEM HAS NO FAR BEEN RATHER CONSISTENT - IT HAPPENS QUITE PREDICTABLY EVERY MORNING. I HAVE NOT HOWEVER NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH GEAR ENGAGEMENT ONCE THE CAR IS ABLE TO START.*AK
I PURCHASED A 330I BMW IN DECEMBER OF 2003. THE CAR HAS LESS THEN 1500 MILES ON IT AND HAS DEVELOPED A HUGE PROBLEM. IN THE MORNINGS WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, THE ENGINE WILL REV WHEN ITS IN DRIVE AND NOT GO INTO GEAR. IT TAKES QUITE A FEW SECONDS FOR IT TO ENGAGE INTO 'D'. THE CAR WILL ALSO JERK INTO 1ST GEAR AFTER IT FINALLY STARTS TO DRIVE. I HAVE JUST TAKEN MY BRAND NEW BMW INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR TEST ON IT AND UNBELIEVABLE TO MY EARS.....I GOT A PHONE CALL FROM THEM SAYING THE WHOLE ENGINE TRANSMISSION HAS TO BE REPLACED...."THERE IS SOME KIND OF FLAW".....AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET AND FINDING OUT THAT THE BMW 3 SERIES HAS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM..I FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF AND VERY UPSET. BMW 525I 2004: DEALER SAYS THEY CAN NOT SET SPEEDOMETER TO SHOW MILES ACTUALLY TRAVELING: INSTEAD THE SPEEDOMETERS ON ALL CARS ARE SET USING THE FOLLOWING FORMULA: SPEED SHOWN ON SPEEDOMETER X .10 (THE RESULT) ADD 2.4 MILES. THEN TAKE THIS RESULT AND SUBTRACT IT FROM THE MILES SHOWN ON THE SPEEDOMETER TO FIND THE ACTUAL MILES I AM TRAVELING! IN OTHER WORDS IF THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWS I AM TRAVELING 70 MPH X .10 = 7 + 2.4 = 9.4 I AM ACTUALLY GOING 60.6 MILES! BMW REFUSES TO ADJUST THIS. WHAT CAN I DO SHORT OF TRADING IN CAR?*JB
I OWN A 2004 BMW 330CI. DRIVING IN REVERSE OUT OF MY GARAGE AND DRIVEWAY FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, THEN SHIFTING TO DRIVE WHEN I REACH THE STREET, THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT ENGAGE UNTIL ABOUT 3-10 SECONDS. I CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP CONCERNING THIS AND THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IT, DESPITE NUMEROUS REPORTS I HAVE READ ONLINE FROM OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.
MY NEW CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE WHEN I GIVE IT GAS. CONTACTED MY DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS "NORMAL FOR A BREAK IN PERIOD". THE CAR HIT 2 - 3,000 RPMS WITHOUT MOVING. VERY SCARY. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES USUALLY AFTER NOT DRIVING THE CAR FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 2K MILES AND WAS PURCHASED IN DECEMBER. THE BMW MESSAGE BOARDS ARE FILLED WITH OTHER VICTIMS OF THIS KNOWN DEFECT. DEALER SAID I HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AND THAT THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY. CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER AT LOW, INTERMIDIATE AND HIGH SPEED. CAR WILL SHAKE VIOLENTLY, SPUTTERED, THEN BECOME UNDRIVABLE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. BROUGHT IN TO DEALER AND WAS TOLD CAR HAS MISFIRED. DEALER PROCEEDED TO REPAIR PROBLEM BY REPROGRAMMING COMPUTER CHIP PER MANUFACTURER'S SERVICE BULLETIN. WAS TOLD THE CAR IS FIXED AND SAFE TO DRIVE. 200 MILES AND ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEED, THE PROBLEM RESURFACED. WAS TOWWED BACK TO THE DEALER NAD WAS TOLD THAT THE AIR FLOW SENSOR AND SOEMTHING ELSE WAS THE ISSUE. REPLACES BOTH PARTS. REPAIR ENGINEER THINKS THAT THERE IS A 99% LIKELYHOOD THAT THE PROBLEM IS FIXED. I AM NOT SO SURE SINCE THAT SAID THE SAME THING LAST TIME. I HAVE A 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION 330CIC AND WHEN I PUT THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL AT A STOP THE ENGINE RPM WOULD DIP DRASTICALLY AND STALLS SEVERAL TIMES IN TRAFFIC. PERIODICALLY THE ENGINE RPM WOULD DIP SO RAPIDLY THAT THE ENGINE STALLS FROM IDLE POSITION. THIS CAN HAPPEN IN THE DRIVEWAY OR ON A ROAD AT AN 4-WAY LIGHT. BASICALLY ANYTIME THE ENGINE IS AT IDLE THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR STALLING. I EXPERIENCED STALLS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AS WELL AS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT.*AK
THE STEPTRONIC TRANSMISSION WILL NOT ENGAUGE IN "D" FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AFTER SITTING OVERNIGHT. BMW REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION AT 1100 MILES AND AT 300 MILES THE "NEW" TRANSMISSION IS DOING THE SAME THING. THE CAR GOES IN "R" AND POTENTIALLY COULD LEAVE YOU IN TRAFFIC WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY.*AK

WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR SHOOK VIOLENTLY, THE ENGINE RATTLED AND THE CAR LOST ENGINE POWER; THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. THE CAR BECAME IMMEDIATELY UN DRIVABLE. IT WAS LATER DETERMINED THAT ONE OF THE CYLINDERS IN THE CAR MISFIRED AND COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, SENDING THE ENGINE INTO A COMPLETE UNBALANCE. *CB
WHEN VEHICLE IS COLD (TYPICALLY IN THE MORNING) WHILE REVERSING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, ONCE THE CAR IS THEN SHIFTED FROM REVERSE INTO DRIVE THERE IS A VERY NOTICEABLE DELAY IN THE TIME IT TAKES FOR THE CAR TO ACTUALLY ENGAGE INTO DRIVE (5 TO 7 SECONDS OR SO). DEALER FOUND AN INTERNAL FAILURE AND REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION. DEALER STATED THAT AT LEAST 12 OTHER 3-SERIES BMW'S HAD A FAILED TRANSMISSION AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT THEIR DEALER. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL.
BRAND NEW 2004 CAR. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - USUALLY HAPPENS ONCE A DAY IN THE EARLY MORNING. COLD START, WHEN SHIFTING THE CAR INTO "DRIVE", IT TAKES A FEW SECONDS FOR "D" TO ENGAGE AND MUST REV UP TO 2000-4000 RPM TO GO FORWARD. VERY DANGEROUS WHEN STARTING ON STEEP ROADS BECAUSE THE CAR WILL SLIP BACKWARDS FOR A FEW SECONDS. IT FIRST OCCUR ON MY NEW CAR AROUND 400 MILES AND HAS OCCUR MANY TIMES, ON AND OFF, FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS. IT HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER OWNERS WITH 2003 AND 2004 BMW AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. TAKATA RECALL FIRST THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WAS RECALLED, AFTER WAITING OVER ONE YEAR, IT WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED. NOW THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG HAS BEEN RECALLED. WE RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY. WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR OVER TWO YEARS! NO CONTACT, NO REPLACEMENT. WE CONTINUE TO LIVE IN PERIL OF THE LETHAL DEPLOYMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE AIRBAG AND BMW JUST SAYS WAIT?
