I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE SHOP FOR A BATTERY CHANGE AND UPON PICKING UP THE CAR THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT WENT ON. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS CON-INCIDENTAL THAT IT HAPPENED ON THAT DAY AND WOULD COST OVER $1000 TO FIX. I GOT A SECOND OPINION AND WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THAT THE MAT SENSOR IS BROKE AND MAY DEPLOY IN ACCIDENT WHETHER OR NOT SOMEONE IS SITTING IN THE SEAT. I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND SAW THAT A RECALL WAS ISSUED BY YOU FOR MODELS 2006 AND EARLIER FOR THE SAME ISSUE. AFTER SPEAKING WITH BMW CORPORATE, I WAS TOLD TO REGISTER A COMPLAINT WITH YOU THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO UNLESS THE NHTSA ISSUES A RECALL. *TR
CAR HAS HORRIBLE LIFTER TICKING NOISE. STARTED AROUND 58K MILES, NOW UP TO 61K. BMW KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND HAVE EVEN WENT AS FAR AS ISSUING A NEW (REVISION IN 2009) SERVICE BULLETIN AND REDESIGNING THE HEAD AND LIFTERS. THEY DON'T WANT TO ISSUE A RECALL NOTICE FOR THEIR OWN DESIGN FLAW BECAUSE OF THE COST ASSOCIATED WITH REPLACING THESE PARTS. I CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 3K MILES AND HAVE BEEN NOTICING FERROUS METAL FLAKES IN THE FILTER CAUSED BY THE LIFTERS BEING STARVED OF OIL DUE TO THE OIL PORTS IN THE HEAD BEING TOO SMALL TO ALLOW ADEQUATE OIL FLOW TO THEM. ONE WOULD EXPECT A BMW TO LAST A LITTLE BIT LONGER THAN 60K MILES BEFORE ANY ISSUES LIKE THIS ARISE. *TR
STEERING WHEEL LOCK ENGAGED NOT WHILE DRIVING. CAR WAS PARKED WENT TO GET IN CAR AND START IT BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. STEERING WHEEL LOCK IS ENGAGED. TURN STEERING WHEEL TO START ENGINE WAS THE MESSAGE THAT APPEARED ON SCREEN. TRIED EVERYTHING EVEN CALLED BMW DEALERSHIP TO ASK FOR HELP. TRIED EVERYTHING THEY TOLD ME FOR HOURS. IT STILL WONT START. NEEDS TO BE TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP AND FIXED. WHERE THE CAR WASN'T MOVING WHEN THIS HAPPENED THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS BECAUSE I HAVE READ MANY OF FORUMS AND THREADS ABOUT STEERING WHEEL LOCKS ON 07 335I AND HAVING MANY PROBLEMS. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THANKYOU *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY GEORGIA 400, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST TRAVELED HIGHWAY'S IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA. CARS FREQUENTLY TRAVEL 20-30 MPH ABOVE THE SPEED LIMIT AND IF YOU DO NOT GO AT LEAST 75 MPH, THEN YOU ARE OBSTRUCTING THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. MY 2007 BMW 328XI SEDAN WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 80 MPH UNTIL AN ORANGE ENGINE OVERHEAT LIGHT CAME ON, THEN QUICKLY TURNED RED. IMMEDIATELY THE SAFETY MECHANISM KICKED IN WHICH RESTRICTS MY SPEED AND I COULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE. I WAS IN THE FAST LEFT LANE AND TRIED TO PULL OVER ON THE LEFT HAND SHOULDER BUT THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SPACE. I WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE TO AT LEAST PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT HAND LANE, BUT COULD NOT. LUCKILY THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC WAS NOT IT'S USUAL BUSY NATURE AND CARS BEHIND ME WERE HONKING AS I KEPT TRYING TO GET OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER (AS CARS WERE TRAVELING HIGH SPEEDS). THE ENGINE NOISE WAS GETTING LOUDER AND LOUDER. I LIMPED OVER TO THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AS IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WOULD EXPLODE. I COULD SMELL SMOKE AS WELL. THE WATER PUMP ENDED UP QUITTING ON ME, CAUSING THE ENGINE OVERHEAT. HOWEVER, NO WARNING AT ALL AND NO INDICATION THAT ALLOWED ME TO TAKE PRE-CAUTION BEFORE I TRAVELED IN MY CAR. THIS IS SIMPLY OUTRAGEOUS AND A DESIGN FLAW. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE. YOUR ENGINE SUDDENLY QUITTING ON YOU, WITH NO WARNING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY SYSTEM? CARS IN EVERY LANE TRAVELING AT LEAST 75 MPH OR GREATER WHILE YOU ARE QUICKLY REDUCING IN SPEED TRYING TO PULL OVER? ON TOP OF THAT, THERE IS NO READING IN MY CAR FOR ENGINE TEMPERATURE. BMW NEEDS TO FIX THIS OR SOMEONE WILL DIE BECAUSE OF IT. MANY MAY GET LUCKY THEY ARE ON A SIDE ROAD OR IN A SAFE LOCATION WHEN THEIR WATER PUMP GOES OUT. HOWEVER, MANY ARE ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENS! THREE PEOPLE WORKED ON MY CAR THE LAST MONTH AND ALL SAY NO WAY TO DETERMINE WHEN YOUR WATER PUMP WILL BLOW. NO EXCUSES FOR THIS! *TR
2007 BMW 335I. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED AS HE MERGED INTO TRAFFIC, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK TO THE FLOOR, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO PUSH THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL. HOWEVER, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REDLINE AND HE WAS FORCED TO FEATHER THE CLUTCH, IN ORDER TO GET OFF THE ROAD. BMW CLAIMED THE CONSUMER PUSHED THE PEDAL TOO HARD, AND THEREFORE THERE WAS NO DEFECT IN THE DESIGN. THE CONSUMER STATED THE ATTACHMENT, THAT HELD THE PEDAL IN PLACE, SLIPPED OUT OF THE PLASTIC CLIP.
ALL DOORS EXCEPT DRIVER DOOR ARE LOCKED AND CANNOT BE OPEN BY PASSENGER FROM INSIDE USING DOOR HANDLE; CANNOT BE OPENED USING THE DOOR LOCK SWITCH ON THE DASH BOARD; CANNOT BE OPENED USING THE KEY FOB; CANNOT BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE. THEREFORE ALL PASSENGERS HAVE TO EXIT THROUGH THE DRIVER DOOR. ONCE BEING LOCKED FROM THE OUTSIDE, THE DRIVE HAS TO USE THE BACKUP KEY IN THE KEY FOB TO UNLOCK THE DOOR. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE REGARDING EXITING THE CAR IN EMERGENCY SITUATION. *TR
ON 20 FEB 2013, WE WERE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY IN SAN FRANCISCO. TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF US SLOWED TO A STOP AND WE ALSO STOPPED. WE WERE THEN STRUCK HARD FROM BEHIND BY ANOTHER CAR THAT HIT THE RIGHT-REAR PART OF OUR BUMPER. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE IMPACT, ALL INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS IN OUR CAR FLICKERED AND BECAME VERY DIM. WE DISCOVERED LATER THAT THE IMPACT HAD DAMAGED THE CAR'S BATTERY, EVIDENCED BY ELECTROLYTE LEAKING OUT OF THE UNDERNEATH, REAR OF THE CAR. AFTER THE COLLISION, TRAFFIC BEGAN MOVING AGAIN AND THE OTHER DRIVER MOVED HIS CAR OFF THE ROADWAY, LEAVING US SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY, 5-LANE FREEWAY AFTER DARK WITH NO LIGHTS OF ANY KIND IN OR ON OUR CAR. THE EMERGENCY FLASHER FLICKERED DIMLY, BUT WAS NOT WORKING. ALL THE HEAD AND TAIL LIGHTS WERE DARK. POLICE EVENTUALLY ARRIVED AND PUSHED OUR CAR TO THE SHOULDER. I WAITED INSIDE OUR CAR WHILE THE DRIVER SPOKE WITH THE POLICE. AS I WAITED, THE DOOR LOCKS SUDDENLY LATCHED AND THE ALARM STARTED. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO UNLOCK THE CAR FROM THE INSIDE. THE DOOR HANDLES WERE COMPLETELY NON-FUNCTIONAL. THE WINDOWS WOULD NOT OPEN. I WAS TRAPPED INSIDE THE CAR. PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE CAR WERE UNABLE TO HELP ME ESCAPE. A TOW-TRUCK DRIVER ASKED ME TO RELEASE THE HOOD LATCH. HE ATTACHED A BATTERY PACK TO SOME TERMINALS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND WHEN THE INTERIOR LIGHTS CAME ON, I WAS ABLE TO UNLOCK THE DOOR AND LEAVE THE CAR. THEN HE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY PACK AND THE CAR WENT DARK. IF THERE HAD BEEN A FIRE OR AN INJURY, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION. AS AN ENGINEER I SEE TWO, NO-COST SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM. (1) SURROUND THE BATTERY WITH A STRONG BARRIER AND MOVE IT FARTHER AWAY FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. (2) INCLUDE A MECHANICAL LINK TO THE DOOR LATCHES SO THAT THE DOORS CAN BE OPENED FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR WHEN THE BATTERY IS DISCONNECTED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328XI. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE DOOR BUT IT FAILED TO OPEN SINCE THERE WAS NO POWER IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED ON ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 96,000.
ON FEBRUARY 6, 2013, AT AROUND 7AM, I WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON THE TACONIC STATE PARKWAY NEAR PLEASANTVILLE, NY ON MY WAY TO WORK . MY ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS SUDDENLY STARTED TO FAIL, AND I HEARD A CRACKLING NOISE FROM THE BACKSEAT. I LOOKED IN MY REAR-VIEW MIRROR AND I SAW FLAMES IN THE BACKSEAT. I PULLED OVER ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER RIGHT BEFORE THE PLEASANTVILLE EXIT. I STRUGGLED TO EXIT MY CAR BECAUSE THE SEATBELT WAS STUCK AS THE ENTIRE BACKSEAT OF MY CAR WAS ENGULFED WITH ME INSIDE. AFTER IT FINALLY RELEASED , I EXITED THE BURNING CAR IN A DAZE. A GOOD SAMARITAN STOPPED TO HELP ME, WHOSE NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION CAN BE PROVIDED. SHE PUT ME IN HER CAR AND WE EACH CALLED 911. A NYS TROOPER CREATED A POLICE REPORT, WHICH CAN BE PROVIDED. AS WE WAITED FOR FIREMEN, THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND BLEW UP TWICE. ONE OF MY CO-WORKERS STOPPED TO HELP ME AND WITNESSED THE CAR BLOW UP. I HAVE PICTURES SHOWING THE CAR COMPLETELY ENGULFED AND THE ENTIRE CAR CHARRED AND UNRECOGNIZABLE AFTER THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED. I AM NOW AWARE THAT, AFTER THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE, BMW ISSUED ITS LARGEST RECALL EVER IN THE U.S. OF APPROXIMATELY 504K VEHICLES, INCLUDING THE SAME YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL AS MY CAR. THE RECALL STEMS FROM A FAULTY BATTERY CONNECTION. IMPORTANTLY, THE BATTERY AND THE BATTERY CONNECTION FOR BMWS ARE IN THE TRUNK, WHICH IS WHERE I BELIEVE THE FIRE STARTED IN MY CAR. AS A RESULT OF NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND CASE STUDIES, BMW HAD BEEN AWARE OF THIS BATTERY-RELATED DEFECT ON MY CAR SINCE 2010. I'M ALSO AWARE THAT BMW HAS RECALLED OTHER BMW MODELS FOR A VERY SIMILAR BATTERY ISSUE THAT RESULTED IN CHARRING OR FIRES IN THE BMWS. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD BY TRAVELER'S INSURANCE COMPANY AND IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE INSPECTION.
THE WHEELS WERE CHECKED DUE TO SEVERAL INSTANCES OF TIRE PRESSURE LOSS. IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT 3 OF 4 RIMS HAVE CRACKS THAT ARE CAUSING THE TIRES TO LOSE PRESSURE. UPON DOING SOME RESEARCH, IT IS APPARENT THAT THIS DEFECT HAS AFFECTED MANY BMW OWNERS WITH RUN FLAT TIRES. *TR
A RED STEERING WHEEL AND LOCK APPEARED ON THE DASH OF MY 2007 328XI WHICH DISPLAYS "STEERING WHEEL LOCK" ALERT AND READS THAT THE CAR SHOULD NOT BE TURNED OFF OR ENGINE MAY FAIL TO START. THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL WHICH IS QUITE EXPENSIVE TO FIX. THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE TO FIX THIS KNOWN DEFECT AS IT IS QUITE COMMON IN THIS MODEL AND THERE ARE MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
THE DOOR ACTUATOR SYSTEM ON MY 2007 BMW 3281 HAS FAILED TWICE, ONCE LOCKING ME IN AND THE OTHER TIME IMMOBILIZING THE CAR AND STRANDING ME FOR SEVERAL HOURS.I NOTICED THE FIRST FAILURE WHEN I STOPPED FOR GAS & COULD NOT OPEN THE FUEL FLAP. I DROVE TO THE DEALER BUT THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN, EITHER ELECTRONICALLY OR MANUALLY, AND THE WINDOWS WOULD NOT LOWER AND THE OTHER THREE DOORS WOULD NOT OPEN. FORTUNATELY, THE SUN ROOF WAS NOT ON THE DOOR CIRCUIT & I WAS ABLE TO TOSS OUT THE FOB KEY FOR SOMEONE TO OPEN THE DRIVER DOOR AND LET ME OUT. A MECHANIC REPLACED THE 15 AMP FUSE IN THE DOOR CIRCUIT WITH A 20 AMP FUSE AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. CONCLUSION: THIS CAR IS A DEATH TRAP WAITING TO HAPPEN. THE SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED AS I DROVE HOME AFTER A STATE INSPECTION. WHEN I PARKED AND HIT THE FOB LOCK BUTTON, I HEARD A MUFFLED NOISE. THE FUSE HAD BLOWN AGAIN. I UNLOCKED THE CAR WITH THE FOB KEY AND AFTER MUCH TIME AND GREAT EFFORT, I INSTALLED A ANOTHER 20 AMP FUSE. BECAUSE THE PASSENGER DOOR WON'T OPEN WHEN THE CIRCUIT BLOWS, REPLACING THE FUSE IS VERY DIFFICULT, NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE. IT REQUIRES AGILITY, KNOW-HOW, AND GOOD CONDITIONS--NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN COUNT ON IN THE GENERAL POPULATION. WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION: GO BACK TO MECHANICAL LOCKING, ELECTRONIC LOCKING IS A BAD SOLUTION AT LEAST, YOU CAN GET OUT OF THE CAR. SECOND: REQUIRE BMW TO RECALL THE ORIGINAL ACTUATORS AND REPLACE THEM WITH NEW DESIGNS THAT, IF THEY TOO FAIL, THEY FAIL IN A DOOR-OPEN MODE. AT THE VERY LEAST, CAR MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO OFFER BUYERS A CHOICE BETWEEN MECHANICAL AND ELECTRONIC DOOR OPENING. LIVES ARE AT STAKE. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION OF THIS VEHICLE STOPPED WORKING IN 2013. THE CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. WE GOT THE CAR CHECKED AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. A CAR OF THIS CALIBER SHOULD NOT HAVE TRANSMISSION ISSUES AFTER ONLY 5-6 YEARS FROM BEING PURCHASED. THE CAR ALSO OVERHEATS.
I TRIED STARTING MY CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START. FIGURED IT WAS A DEAD BATTERY SO I BOUGHT A NEW ONE AND HAD IT REPLACED. THE CAR WORKED FINE FOR ABOUT 3 DAYS THEN HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS BEFORE. I CONTACTED THE DEALER, HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THEM, AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE CONNECTIONS FROM THE BATTERY TO THE ENGINE THAT WERE LOOSE AND CAUSING THE CAR TO NOT START. I PICKED UP MY CAR THE NEXT DAY AFTER PAYING $120 TO HAVE THE PROBLEM (WIGGLING SOME WIRES) FIXED. 2 DAYS LATER...SAME PROBLEM. IT HAS BEEN SITTING NOW FOR OVER 2 WEEKS BECAUSE I HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO KEEP GETTING IT TO AND FROM THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER READING ALL OF THESE OTHER REPORTED PROBLEMS I AM NOW TERRIFIED TO DRIVE IT EVER AGAIN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328 XI. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED, THE REMOTE KEY FOB FAILED TO UNLOCK ALL OF THE DOORS AND THE KEY HAD TO BE USED TO MANUALLY UNLOCK THE DOORS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 48,000.
VEHICLE HAS A CONSTANT STEERING WHEEL LOCK WARNING. THE STEERING WHEEL DOES NOT ACTUALLY LOCK, BUT THE WARNING IS CONSTANT. DEALER HAS STATED THAT THE ONLY REMEDY IS TO REPLACE THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN. *TR
I WAS LEAVING MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WHEN THE VEHICLE CUT OUT WITH NO ELECTRICAL POWER AND THE ENGINE DIED. IT RESTARTED AND I WENT HOME. THE NEXT MORNING THE VEHICLE HAD NO POWER AND WOULD NOT START. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE BATTERY IN THE TRUNK HAD 12.60 VOLTS AND THE FUSES AT THE POWER DISTRIBUTION CENTER/BOX HAD ONLY 2.80 VOLTS. WITH A SCREW DRIVER I MOVED THE LARGE RED BATTERY CABLE GOING TO THE BACK OF THE PDC AND ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON. I SUBSEQEUNTLY REMOVED THE PDC AND INSPECTED THE MAIN POWER LEAD. THE TERMINAL WAS CORRODED HAS A RELATIVELY LOOSE FIT AND JUST CLIPS TO THE BACK OF THE PDC, EVEN THOUGH IT IS A LARGE GAUGE WIRE. *TR
THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY AND WOULD NOT START AFTER THAT. DEALER REPLACED FUEL PUMP BUT IT HAPPENED AGAIN AFTER A WEEK. THIS TIME DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL SENSOR. FIRST TIME THE CAR STALLED ON LOCAL STREET BUT 2ND TIME ON THE FREEWAY. HAD TO TOW TO DEALER BOTH THE TIMES. LOSING ENGINE POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEED IS DANGEROUS AND COULD CAUSE FATAL ACCIDENT. AFTER A WEEK THE ENGINE SUDDENLY LOST MOST OF THE POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND NOW DRIVES AT MAX 50MPH OR SO. DEALER IS STILL TRYING TO TROUBLESHOOT THE CAR, ROOT CAUSE UNKNOWN. ALL THIS HAPPENED JUST AFTER 10 DAYS OF CAR GOING OUT OF WARRANTY. *TR
THE DOORS WILL NOT UNLOCK; FROM THE EXTERIOR, ONLY THE DRIVER'S DOOR CAN BE OPENED WITH THE KEY. FROM THE INTERIOR, ONLY THE DRIVER'S DOOR CAN BE OPENED; NONE OF THE OTHER 3 DOORS CAN BE OPENED MANUALLY OR BY USING THE UNLOCK BUTTONS EITHER ON THE DASH OR ON THE KEY. I THINK THAT THIS CREATES A VERY HAZARDOUS SITUATION-IF THIS FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS OCCUPIED, PASSENGERS WOULD ONLY BE ABLE TO EXIT THROUGH THE WINDOWS OR THROUGH THE DRIVER'S DOOR. THIS COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE IN SOME ACCIDENT SITUATIONS. I SPOKE TO BMW NORTH AMERICA ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY SAID THAT THEY "PROBABLY WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS" TO THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
I PURCHASED MY BMW IN GERMANY!!! THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2006 (I DRIVE A 2007) MODELS OF THIS VEHICLE FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR MAT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. WHEN THIS MAT BECOMES DEFECTIVE, IT DISABLES AIRBAG SYSTEMS IN THE VEHICLES. THIS HAS BEEN A KNOWN PROBLEM SINCE 2008 (WHEN THE RECALL WAS ISSUED), HOWEVER THESE CARS WERE PRODUCED FROM 2006-2008+ BEFORE THE RECALL WAS ISSUED. THE RECALL ONLY COVERS 2006 MODELS WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. IF THE SAME EXACT VEHICLE CONTINUES TO BE PRODUCED WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT YOU ONLY COVER ONE YEAR OF IT BEING PRODUCED WHEN THERE WERE THREE, WHAT GOOD IS THAT? SHE WAS STUCK IN THE RIGHT HAND TURN LANE ON A TWO LANE ROAD AND WAITED FOR SECURITY FORCES PATROLMAN THAT STOPPED AND HELPED PUSH THE CAR OUT OF TRAFFIC. *TR

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ACTUATOR FAILURE WHICH CAUSED THE CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PERMANENTLY LOCK VEHICLE DOORS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER HE ARRIVED AT HIS DESTINATION, HE ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE DOOR, BUT IT FAILED TO OPEN. THEN, HE ATTEMPTED TO USE THE DOOR HANDLE TO EXIT FROM THE VEHICLE, BUT THAT FAILED TO OPEN THE DOOR AS WELL. AFTER APPLYING ALL PRACTICAL OPTIONS TO EXIT THE VEHICLE, SUCH AS USING THE MANUAL DOOR RELEASE, INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL DOOR HANDLE, AND USING THE CENTRAL LOCKING MECHANISM, ALL THE DOORS FAILED TO OPEN. HE HAD TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW AND CLIMB OUT OF THE VEHICLE.
I HAVE OWNED THIS 2007 335I FOR 2 1/2 YEARS. I AM A 59 YEAR OLD FEMALE THAT DRIVES VERY CONSERVATIVELY. IN THE 2 1/2 YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE, THE FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE. FOUR MONTHS AGO THE INJECTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THIS PAST FRIDAY THE ELECTRONIC WATER PUMP AND ELECTRONIC THERMOSTAT HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOT TYPICAL OF ANY BMW I HAVE OWNED IN THE PAST 12-15 YEARS. I CONTACTED OUR LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP AND THEY KNEW OF NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS PARTICULAR MODEL. I CONTACTED BMW TODAY REGARDING THIS MODEL AND THEY TOOK THE INFORMATION FOR REVIEW WHICH TO ME MEANS FILE 13. BMW KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE WATER PUMPS AND THE THERMOSTATS ON THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND THEY CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. BATTERY SEEMED TO HAVE DRAINED...WHEN GIVEN A JUMP AND POWER WAS RESTORED, THE CAR HAD A THE STEERING LOCKED LIGHT UP RED. THE CAR TURNED ON FOR A FEW TIMES AND NOW IT DOESN'T TURN ON AT ALL. I OWN A 07 BMW 328XI, ON 10/03/12 I GOT OUT OF MY CAR AND TRIED LOCKING IT AND ONLY TWO DOORS LOCKED. THE DOORS WOULD NOT UNLOCK WITH THE FOB OR THE DOOR SWITCH LOCATED IN THE CAR. IN ORDER TO GET INTO CAR I HAD TO CLIMB OVER THE PASSENGERS SEAT AND WHEN IT WAS TIME TO GET OUT THE SAME HAD TO HAPPEN. I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A ACTUATOR PROBLEM, SO ASKED IF THERE WAS ANYTHING I COULD DO TO GET THE DOORS UNLOCKED TILL MY APPT. I MADE. HE PROCEEDED TO TELL ME NO AND UPON READING SOME FORUMS HE COULD HAVE SAID USE THE KEY HIDDEN IN THE FOB TO UNLOCK THE DOOR OR CHECK THE #57 FUSE WHICH CONTROLS THE LOCKS. UNFORTUNATELY, I PRETTY DISAPPOINTED WITH MY DEALER BECAUSE HE COULD HAVE POTENTLY PUT ME IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION, HE COULD HAVE TOLD ME THESE THINGS BUT HE CHOICE TO SAY NOTHING TO GET ME IN THERE. KEY FOB WILL NOT UNLOCK DOORS. VALET KEY GETS YOU INTO THE DRIVERS DOOR, BUT THE OTHER DOORS WILL NOT UNLOCK BY ANY MEANS, EITHER BY PULLING THE HANDLE OR BY OPERATING THE INTERIOR UNLOCK SWITCH. IN AN ACCIDENT THAT MIGHT DISABLE THE DOOR UNLOCK FUNCTION, 3 OF THE 4 COULD NOT BE OPENED FOR EXIT PURPOSES. *TR

I UNLOCKED THE CAR AND SAT IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT. MY WIFE SAT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I INSERTED THE KEYFOB AND PUSHED THE 'START' BUTTON. THE CAR TURNED ON AND ABOUT 5 SECONDS LATER WE HEARD A 'GONG' SOUND. WE LOOKED AT THE SCREEN AND IT WAS SHOWING A RED WARNING ABOUT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG BEING DISABLED. I POWERED OFF THE CAR, WAITED A MINUTE AND POWERED IT BACK ON. SAME ERROR CAME UP. SO I POWERED OFF THE CAR A SECOND TIME, ASKED THE WIFE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR AND THEN BACK ONTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THEN I POWERED ON THE CAR. THE ERROR WENT AWAY. WE DROVE 15 MINUTES TO DINNER, ATE AND RETURNED HOME WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THAT NIGHT I SETUP AN APPOINTMENT WITH GLOBAL IMPORTS BMW FOR 9/12/2012 TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT. THE DEALER RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND REPORTED THE FOLLOWING IN REGARDS TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT ISSUE: "87844 PERFORMED SHORT TEST AND FOUND FAULT MRS-93C3. PERFORMED TEST MODULE AND FOUND THE PASSENGER SEAT MAT TO BE DEFECTIVE. CUSTOMER DECLINED THE SEAT MAT REPLACEMENT." NEXT TO THIS I HAD THE SERVICE MANAGER WRITE IN THE TOTAL REPAIR COST, $1,345.70. I STILL HAVE A COPY OF THE PAPERWORK WITH THE DETAILS IF NEEDED. I DECLINED THE REPAIR AT THE TIME BECAUSE I FELT THE FACT THEY FOUND "...THE SEAT MAT TO BE DEFECTIVE" INDICATED A KNOWN ISSUE. FAST FORWARD TO TODAY 4/11/2014, NHTSA LISTS A "RECALL SUBJECT : FRONT SEAT OCCUPANT PROTECTION MAT" CAMPAIGN NUMBER 13V564000. I CALLED BMW USA'S CUSTOMER RELATIONS NUMBER AND THEY TOLD ME MY CAR HAD NO RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH IT EVEN THOUGH THERE'S CLEARLY AN ISSUE WITH THE SENSOR MAT. TO THIS DAY I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE ANY RECALL LETTERS FROM BMW NOR NHTSA. THE CAR STILL BRINGS UP THIS ERROR WHEN MY WIFE SITS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THE ELECTRONIC STEERING WHEEL LOCK ICON CAME UP ON THE DASH PANEL. THE BRAKES FEEL TIGHT AND THE STEERING COLUMN IS TIGHT BUT CLICKS WHEN TURN LEFT AND RIGHT (FEELS SEMI-ENGAGED IF THAT'S POSSIBLE)... WAS WONDERING IF THE BATTERY IS JUST LOW AND DOESN'T TRIGGER THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK? SHOULD WE DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AND RECONNECT OR REPLACE TO SEE IF IT TRIGGERS THE ELECTRIC STEERING WHEEL LOCK? THE ISSUE WITH THE BATTERY HAS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL OTHER OCCASIONS AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK LIGHT CAME UP YELLOW HOWEVER THE CAR STARTED IN THE PAST AFTER JUMP STARTING. I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN I HIT A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD WHICH CAUSED MY SCALDING HOT COFFEE TO GET EJECTED FROM THE HOP HOLDER ONTO MY LEG. THE CUP HOLDERS IN THIS CAR ARE DANGEROUS BECAUSE THEY ARE SPRING LOADED FROM UNDERNEATH. WHEN YOU HAVE A DRINK IN THE HOLDER IT (CUP HOLDER) EXERTS UPWARD FORCE ON THE CUP. AFTER A SHORT DRIVE I PARKED THE CAR. I STARTED TO NOTICE SMOKE COMING FROM THE VENTS. I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD BUT COULD NOT SEE ANY SOURCE. A COPY OF AN EMAIL TO BMW: I HAVE BEEN REASONABLY HAPPY WITH MY 2007 328I UNTIL THE ELECTRONIC LOCKS FAILED. I COULD NOT GET IN MY CAR EXCEPT WITH A KEY. WHEN I LOOKED ONLINE, I FOUND THAT MY PROBLEM WAS NOT AT ALL UNIQUE MANY OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE WITH FAILING ACTUATORS. WHAT TROUBLES ME IS NOT THE FAILURE OF A PART (THOUGH I DO EXPECT BETTER OF BMW), BUT THE FACT THAT MY FAMILY'S SAFETY WAS POTENTIALLY COMPROMISED. MORE IMPORTANTLY, BMW HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE WITH CORRECTIVE PARTS AND PROCEDURES SO, I AM TOLD THAT IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN, I COULD STILL FIND MYSELF TRAPPED IN MY CAR AFTER AN ACCIDENT. I EXPECTED BETTER WITH THE PURCHASE OF A BMW. I AM PROFOUNDLY DISAPPOINTED THAT BMW DOES NOT THINK ENOUGH OF ITS CUSTOMER'S SAFETY TO APPROPRIATELY ADDRESS AND CORRECT THIS ISSUE SO THAT THERE ARE ALWAYS MECHANICAL OVERRIDES OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. PERHAPS YOU HAVE DECIDED, LIKE FORD DID 40 YEARS AGO WITH THE PINTO, THAT THE COSTS OF SETTLING A FEW WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIMS IS CHEAPER THAN CORRECTING A SAFETY DESIGN DEFECT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR DRIVER'S DOOR WOULD NOT UNLOCK. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO UNLOCK THE DOOR USING THE MANUAL KEY OR THE ELECTRONIC KEY FOB. THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR WAS ALSO AFFECTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT A DIAGNOSTIC WAS NOT PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO WAS WAITING FOR THE RESULTS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 63,000.
I HAVE A 2007 BMW 335I COUPE WITH 30000 MILES ON IT. IT WAS REVEALED IN A NORMAL SERVICE APPOINTMENT THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THAT PARTICULAR MODELS MOTOR ( N54 ). THE TOLERANCES OF THE PULLEY WHEEL THAT SUPPORTS ALL THE CARS SYSTEMS INCLUDING THE POWER STEERING IS DANGEROUSLY CLOSE AND CAN RUB ON THE SUBFRAME OF THE CAR CAUSING THE SERPENTINE BELT TO FAIL CAUSING ALL OF THE CARS SYSTEMS TO STOP WORKING. THIS CAN BE PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS IF YOUR IN A TRAFFIC SITUATION TO HAVE ALL SYSTEMS FAIL. BMW RECOGNIZES THE ISSUE AND PRODUCED A SIB 11 09 08. THE LOCAL BMW SHOP GLOBAL IMPORTS AND MY EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE REFUSE TO FIX THE DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE PROBLEM IS COMPOUNDED THAT IF THE PULLEY CONTINUES TO RUB ON THE SUBFRAME IT CAN ACTUALLY CAUSE THE MOTOR TO DROP FROM THE CAR CHASIS. AN EVEN MORE DANGEROUS SITUATION. ON AUG 10, 2012, I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 BMW 328I ON MONTAGUE EXPY (COUNTY HIGHWAY G4) DURING THE PEAK TRAFFIC HOUR (6:30PM). OBVIOUSLY, AT THAT TIME, THE ROAD WAS PACKED WITH TRAFFIC, AND SUDDENLY MY CAR ENGINE EXTINGUISHED AND DIED RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EXPRESSWAY. I HAD TO STAY IN MY CAR FOR MY NEARLY 45 MINUTES, TOO TERRIFIED TO WALK OUT OF MY CAR AND ALSO TERRIFIED TO STAY INSIDE, WHERE I WAS EQUALLY VULNERABLE. THANKFULLY, THE CAR BEHIND ME HAD KEPT A GOOD DISTANCE AWAY AND STOPPED TOO; IF THE DRIVER WASN'T SO CAREFUL, ONE CAN ONLY IMAGINE A FAR WORSE SITUATION OCCURRING, SUCH AS A PILEUP. I HAVE KEPT A VERY GOOD MAINTENANCE RECORD ON THIS BMW 328I AND ALSO PURCHASED THE EXTENSION MAINTENANCE PROGRAM BACK WHEN I BOUGHT IT, AND THEREFORE, THIS MALFUNCTION ISSUE WAS MOST DEFINITELY NOT CAUSED BY OWNER IGNORANCE OR LACK OF CARE. AND YET, DESPITE HAVING TAKEN GOOD CARE OF MY CAR, I ALREADY HAD TO HAVE A MAJOR ENGINE REPAIR ON THE BMW WITHIN ITS FIRST TWO YEARS. AND JUST HALF A YEAR AGO, I HAD TO HAVE ANOTHER MAJOR STARTER REPAIR AS WELL - I COULDN'T EVEN START UP THE CAR ENGINE. AND NOW THERE'S THIS - A CAR STALL FROM A DEFECT WITH THE FUEL PUMP. I FIND THIS RECENT INCIDENT THE MOST AGGRAVATING AND DANGEROUS OF THEM ALL; I HONESTLY COULD HAVE DIED. THUS I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO ALERT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM IN PARTICULAR WITH THE BMW 328I. MY VEHICLE DISPLAYED A CODE, "TPM", WHICH MEANS, TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR, WHICH IS TO DETECT TIRE PRESSURE ISSUES FROM THE "RUN FLAT TIRES" THAT ARE STANDARD ON MY VEHICLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO MY DEALER AND THEY SAID, "THE TEMPERATURE SWING TRIPPED THE WARNING LIGHT". THEY RESET THE SYSTEM AND I CONTINUED TO USE MY VEHICLE AND WITHIN 3 DAYS, THE TPM LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, AND I IMMEDIATELY DROVE OVER TO THE DEALER AGAIN. ON MY WAY TWO OF MY RUN FLAT TIRES LITERALLY SHREDDED AND I WAS FORCED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER. THIS TIME THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE NITROGEN THAT IS USED TO INFLATE THE TIRES, HAD ERODED THE INTERIOR LINING (WALLS) OF THE TIRES WHICH IS WHY THEY DID NOT DETECT THIS ISSUE 3 DAYS BEFORE. NOT ONLY DID I HAVE TO SPRING FOR 4 NEW TIRES, THAT HAVE 27K MILES ON THEM, I AM NOW FEARFUL OF THIS HAPPENING AGAIN. IF NITROGEN IS IN FACT DESTROYING THE TIRE FROM THE INSIDE OUT, THAN WHY IS THIS CHEMICAL BEING USED??? *TR
DOORS WILL NOT UNLOCK OR OPEN. I WAS LITERALLY TRAPPED INSIDE MY CAR IN A PARKING LOT. DROVE VEHICLE HOME, HAD TO PUT DOWN WINDOW AND HAVE SOMEONE USE VALET KEY AT MY HOUSE TO OPEN THE DRIVER DOOR. NONE OF THE OTHER THREE PASSENGER DOORS CAN BE UNLOCKED. LUCKILY NO PASSENGERS IN MY VEHICLE. WAS TOLD THERE IS A TSB RELATED TO THIS, HOWEVER IT IS NOT RECOGNIZED AS A SAFETY ISSUE. CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS CONSIDERED "SAFE" WHEN IF MY VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE AND I HAD MY CHILDREN IN THEIR CAR SEATS IN THE BACK SEAT, THERE WOULD BE NO WAY TO OPEN THE DOORS TO GET THEM OUT. BMW IS AWARE THAT THE ACTUATORS ARE PULLING TOO MUCH CURRENT THROUGH THE FUSES AND THAT THE ACTUATORS NEED REPLACED. THEY ARE MAKING TONS OF MONEY OFF OF CHARGING PEOPLE TO REPAIR THIS KNOWN PROBLEM AS THIS IS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN AVOID HAVING REPAIRED UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO GAMBLE ON YOUR OWN LIFE OR THOSE OF FAMILY/FRIENDS WHO MAY BE IN YOUR VEHICLE WHEN THIS OCCURS. THERE REALLY NEEDS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL ON THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE LOSES THEIR LIFE AS A RESULT. I FIND IT QUITE ABSURD THAT THE NHTSA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THIS. DOES SOMEONE NEED TO DIE FOR THIS TO BE REMEDIED? JUST BECAUSE I DRIVE A USED BMW DOES NOT MEAN I HAVE THE MONEY TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED, YET I'VE GOT TWO VERY YOUNG CHILDREN WHO RIDE IN THE BACKSEAT OF THIS CAR ON A DAILY BASIS. LOOKING AT THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN FILED, OBVIOUSLY IT APPEARS THAT NEITHER BMW NOR THE NHTSA SEEM TO CARE ABOUT MY SAFETY, MY FAMILY'S SAFETY OR THAT OF ANY OF THE OTHER THOUSANDS OF BMW OWNERS WHO ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
