I DISCOVERED MULTIPLE SEVERED WIRES IN THE TAILGATE/REAR WINDOW WIRING HARNESSES. THROUGH RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE OVER SEVERAL MODEL YEARS - SEARCH FOR BMW E61 TAILGATE WIRING PROBLEMS. THE FAILURES ARE CAUSED BY A POOR DESIGN WHERE THE WIRES ENTERING THE HINGE GUIDES (4) FOR THE GLASS AND TAILGATE ARE REPEATEDLY FLEXED AT A SHARP ANGLE UNTIL THE INSULATION, THEN THE COPPER WIRE BREAKS. SAFETY ISSUES - POSSIBLE ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT LEADING TO FIRES (HIGHEST LOAD IS FOR REAR DEFROSTER); LIGHTING FAILURES (REAR HIGH BRAKE LIGHT, LICENSE PLATE LAMPS AND OTHERS); REDUCED VISIBILITY DUE TO LOSS OF WIPER/WASHER/DEFROSTER; REAR GLASS LATCH OPENING WHILE UNDERWAY, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN LOSS OF CARGO OR INGRESS OF EXHAUST FUMES. THIS IS NOT AN EASILY REPAIRED PROBLEM. IT WOULD BE BEYOND THE CAPABILITIES OF ALL BUT A SKILLED MECHANIC WITH PROPER TOOLS. WATER PUMP FAILURE WITH LESS THAN 50K MILES, REPAIR COST $1200, RIDICULOUS! SEE NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10472497, THIS GENTLEMAN HAD THE SAME COMPLAINT AND JUST LIKE HIM, MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BY 1.5 MONTHS. *TR
E61 WAGON, REAR HATCH: I DISCOVERED FAILURES OF MULTIPLE WIRES IN THE TAILGATE/REAR WINDOW WIRING HARNESSES. THROUGH RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE OVER SEVERAL MODEL YEARS - SEARCH FOR BMW E61 TAILGATE WIRING PROBLEMS. MALFUNCTION OF LEFT HEADLIGHT. DEALER INSPECTION REVEALED"HEADLIGHT WIRES LEADING TO BULB SOCKET HAVE CORROSION ON THEM AND CASING AROUND THE WIRES IS COMING OFF". THERE WAS A RECENT VEHICLE SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS MODEL CAR FOR SIMILAR ISSUES WITH REAR LAMP BULB CARRIER: RECALL CAMPAIGN NO. 13V-407 POTENTIALLY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH MALFUNCTION OF HEADLIGHTS LEADING TO DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS OR CRASH CAN OCCUR ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT OR IN BAD/INCLEMENT WEATHER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 535I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE BRAKES FAILED ACCOMPANIED BY THE ILLUMINATION OF THE WARNING INDICATORS. THE FAILURE WAS RECURRING. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V407000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING) BUT DID NOT CONFIRM IF THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
FAILURE OF THE RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY DUE TO THE GROUNDING WIRE CONNECTOR (INSIDE THE 8 PIN CONNECTOR WHICH ATTACHES TO 8 PIN RECEIVER ON THE LIGHT) MELTING WHICH RENDERED THE BRAKE LIGHT, TURN SIGNAL, REVERSE LIGHT, AND LIGHTNING INOPERATIVE. AS CONNECTION WAS FAILING, THE GROUND CONNECTION WAS LIKELY INTERMITTENT LEADING TO LIGHTING MALFUNCTION WARNING INDICATIONS ON DASH AND INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF RIGHT REAR LIGHTS, DIMMED BRIGHTNESS OF RIGHT REAR LIGHTS. THE INTERMITTENT OPERATION/FAILURE REDUCES THE ABILITY TO WARN OTHER CARS/DRIVERS OF MY CAR'S INTENTIONS. COULD RESULT IN VEHICLE REAR END COLLISIONS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE RIGHT TAILLIGHT HAS MALFUNCTIONED COMPLETELY (BRAKE LIGHTS AND RIGHT TURN SIGNAL). THE ISSUE IS WELL KNOWN TO BMW DEALERSHIPS HOWEVER THEY CLAIM IT'S NOT COVERED UNDER CPO (CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED) WARRANTY AND MY MODEL IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE TAIL LIGHT CONNECTOR IS MELTED DUE TO FAULTY TAIL LIGHT GROUNDING. BMW HAS ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE (SOME MODELS) BUT I DON'T KNOW IF I WILL EVER GET NOTIFIED. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 35 MPH ON A BUSY STREET AT RUSH HOUR I PREPARED TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN BY INDICATING. THE FAST TURN SINGLE FLASHING STARTED AND THE COMPUTER SYSTEM IN MY 2008 535I SAID REAR TURN SINGLE MALFUNCTION. I SLOWED TO MY THE TURN AND THE PERSON BEHIND ME SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES AND SWERVED TO AVOID HITTING ME AND ALMOST CRASHED INTO THE PERSON NEXT THEM. I DIDN'T REALIZE WHY THIS HAPPENED, SO I PULLED OVER TO CHECK MY LIGHTING SYSTEM AND REALIZED THAT THE RIGHT REAR LIGHTS WEREN'T FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. I OPENED THE REAR BRAKE COMPARTMENT AND SMELLED BURNING MELTED PLASTIC. I DISCONNECTED THE BRAKE LIGHT CONNECTOR AND FOUND THAT IT WAS MELTED. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR MY YEAR CAR. WHEN I WENT TO BEVERLY HILLS BMW I WAS TURNED AWAY. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WASN'T A RECALL THAT COVERED MY CAR. THEY WERE VERY RUDE ABOUT THE WHOLE AND BASICALLY TOLD ME THAT I'D HAVE TO DEAL WITH MYSELF AND COVER THE COSTS. MY REAR RIGHT BULB HOUSING HAS MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING MY CAR TO NOT HAVE A REAR RIGHT TURN SIGNAL, REAR RIGHT BRAKE SIGNAL AND RIGHT SIDE BACK UP LIGHT. *TR
THE REAR BACK-UP LAMP OUTAGE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON MY DASHBOARD. I ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE BULB AND SAW THAT THE WIRING HARNESS HAD BEEN BURNT AROUND THE BROWN WIRE. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND SAW THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES TO OTHER WITH THE SAME YR MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE. I REPORTED IT TO THE DEAL WHO IN TURN REFERRED ME TO CONTACT BMW NORTH AMERICA. I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL RESPONSE FROM THEM SAYING THAT THERE IS A RECALL IN PROCESS AND TO WAIT 4-6 WEEKS. THE PROBLEM, IS THAT MY TAIL LIGHT IS NOT WORKING. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THIS CANNOT BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY. I WANT TO ENSURE THAT I AM INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. *TR
MY REAR LEFT BULB HOUSING HAS MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING MY CAR TO NOT HAVE A REAR LEFT TURN SIGNAL, REAR LEFT BREAK SIGNAL OR LEFT SIDE BACK UP LIGHT. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, SMOKE EMITTED FROM THE OUTSIDE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE COOLANT WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE TAIL LIGHT WIRES HAD FAILED AND WERE COMPLETELY BURNED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBERS: 13V407000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING) AND 12E029000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN EITHER OF THE RECALLS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, PANEL INDICATES THAT THE TEMPERATURE IS HIGH, AND ADVISES TO DRIVE MODERATELY. PULLED OVER ONE LANE. BEFORE BEING ABLE TO PULL OVER COMPLETELY, A NEW INDICATION SHOWS ON THE PANEL, INSTRUCTING THAT THE ENGINE IS OVERHEATED. VEHICLE QUICKLY POWERS DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. UNABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE BEFORE THE CAR IS TRAVELING UNDER 20 MPH. LIMPED TO THE ROAD SIDE WITH OTHER CARS BUZZING BY AT DANGEROUSLY DIFFERENT SPEEDS AS COMPARED TO MY OWN. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WHILE GOING LESS THAN 5 MPH, CAUSING OTHER DRIVERS TO SLAM THEIR BRAKES AND HONK PROFUSELY AT ME. THE DECELERATION HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY. WITH LOTS OF TRAFFIC, THIS CREATED A DANGEROUS AND DIFFICULT SITUATION TO MANAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR. THE FACT THAT A CRASH DID NOT OCCUR IS A MATTER OF LUCK. AFTER PULLING OFF TO THE SIDE AND LETTING THE CAR COOL FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND DRIVE SLOWLY, LONG ENOUGH TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY AT THE NEXT EXIT, ABOUT 500 FEET AWAY. CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK. CAR IS NOW AT DEALER. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE TURN SIGNAL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AS THE PASSENGER'S REAR TURN SIGNAL AND REVERSE LIGHT FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 63,000.
PASSENGER SIDE REAR TAIL LIGHT (BACK UP AND TURN SIGNAL) WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR MELTED. PER NTBSB AND WEB SEARCH, NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE HAD EXACT SAME PROBLEM. DASH INDICATED THAT FIRST TAIL LIGHT FAILED, THEN BACK UP LIGHT FAILED. INSPECTION SHOWED MELTED WIRE CONNECTOR. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. WAS NEARLY COLLIDED WHEN MAKING A RIGHT TURN.
DRIVING AT 30MPH,ENGINES POWER SUDDENLY REDUCED,ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT COMES ON . TOOK THE CAR TO BMW FREMONT, THEY FOUND THE INTAKE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSORS FAULTY.THEY REPLACED CAMSHAFT SENSORS,PULSE GENERATOR,O-RING AND TORQUE SCREW.AS ADVISED BY THE SERVICE AGENT HAD TO DO AN OIL, OILFILTER CHANGE AND FUEL INJECTION SERVICE TO PREVENT DEFAULT ON THE WARRANTY OF PARTS PUT IN. AS THE CAR WAS OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD(EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A VERY LOW MILEAGE OF 18760) SO HAD TO PAY $1235 OUT OF POCKET. AT 19350MILES THE SIMILAR ISSUE CAME UP, TOOK IT BACK TO BMW FREMONT, THEY FOUND FAULTS STORED IN DME,2A7C VARIABLE CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL INTAKE COLD START 1 TIME NOT CURRENTLY PRESENT,CLEARED FAULTS AND CUSTOMER TO MONITOR. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AND A WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, THE WARNING SAYS (PASS. RESTRAINT SYSTEM. FAULT IN PASSENGER-RESTRAINT SYSTEM AFFECTING AIR BAG, BELT TENSIONER BELT-FORCE LIMITER. CONTINUE WEARING SAFETY BELT. HAVE SYSTEM CHECKED BY THE NEAREST BMW CENTER. I WAS DRIVING NORMALLY WITH NO SUDDEN STOP OR ANY OUT OF THE ORDINARY MOVE.
THE REAR RIGHT TAIL LIGHT STOPPED FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY, AND THE BRAKE LIGHT, THE RUNNING LIGHT, THE REVERSE LIGHT, AND THE BLINKER STOPPED WORKING. THIS CREATED MANY POTENTIAL ACCIDENTS AS ONCOMING DRIVERS COULD NOT PROPERLY SEE ME REVERSING OR TURNING RIGHT. THERE IS AN ACTIVE RECALL FOR THE ISSUE AND BMW IS REPLACING THE REAR TAIL LIGHTS FOR VIN'S THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS IDENTIFIED AS HAVING THE ISSUE. MY VEHICLE HAS THE ISSUE. BMW REFUSED TO REPLACED THE TAIL LIGHT THAT HAS PERMANENT LOSS OF FUNCTIONALITY. I WAS FORCED TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FUNDS FOR THE ITEM THAT HAS A RECALL AND BMW NORTH AMERICA HAS REFUSED TO ASSIST IN THIS MATTER. I SPOKE TO [XXX] AT BMW NORTH AMERICA, HE IS A CUSTOMER RELATIONS SUPERVISOR, AND HIS CONTACT INFORMATION IS IN THE BMW CASE FILE WITH ID LAST 7 DIGITS OF MY VIN. HE INDICATED THAT BMW WILL NOT DO ANYTHING UNLESS THE GOVERNMENT FORCES THEM TO BY PROVIDING THE VIN NUMBER TO THEM AS AN EFFECTED VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER THE CONTACT WAS NOT AWARE OF THE EXACT REPAIRS. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 13V407000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING) HOWEVER, THE CONTACT'S VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
FOR THE PAST MONTH, MY CAR, A 2008 BMW 528 IX (AUTOMATIC) WOULD SLIP OUT OF DRIVE (D) INTO PARK (P) AS I WAS ACCELERATING FORWARD FROM A DEAD STOP. THE ELECTRONIC GEAR SHIFT MECHANISM WOULD DO THIS APPROXIMATELY 10% OF THE TIME, AND CAUSE THE CAR TO JERK TO A STOP. IT WOULD REQUIRE ME TO PUT IT BACK INTO DRIVE AND START AGAIN. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I MIGHT BE DOING SOMETHING WRONG, SO I DIDN'T REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY. HOWEVER, IT KEPT HAPPENING. THIS CREATED A DANGEROUS SITUATION, AS SOMETIMES I WAS IN AN INTERSECTION WHEN THIS OCCURRED. A FEW WEEKS LATER (BEFORE I HAD CHANCE TO TAKE IT IN FOR SERVICE), THE GEAR SHIFT STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO GEAR AT ALL. THE GEAR SHIFT MECHANISM IS AN ELECTRONIC PART, NOT A MECHANICAL CONNECTION. I CALLED BMW, AND THEY SAID THE PART WAS NOT COVERED BY ANY WARRANTY OR RECALL (THE CAR WAS 5K MILES OUT OF WARRANTY). I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, A $1300 EXPENSE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE TANK VENT VALVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS 30,342. *TR
INSULATION CRUMBLING ON ALL WIRING INSIDE BOTH HEADLIGHT (DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES) UNITS RESULTING IN MALFUNCTIONING HEADLIGHTS, RUNNING LIGHTS, AND MARKER LIGHTS. UNFORTUNATELY, A COMMON PROBLEM AND A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. ISSUE IS EXACERBATED BUT NOT CAUSED BY HEAT. INSULATION ON WIRING TO NAVIGATION, RADIO/MEDIA PLAYER, CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT, OR CCC (CAR COMMUNICATION COMPUTER), CRUMBLING CAUSING MALFUNCTIONS TO OCCUR IN ALL THE ABOVE SECTIONS. I SUSPECT MUCH OF THE CAR'S WIRING TO BE IN SIMILAR, POOR CONDITION. I HAVE READ THAT MANY EUROPEAN CARS FROM THE '80S, '90S THROUGH THE FIRST TEN OR SO YEARS OF THE 21ST CENTURY USED A SOY BASED, BIODEGRADABLE WIRE INSULATION AS PART OF A "GREEN MOVEMENT". THIS EARLY IMPLEMENTATION OF SAID WIRE DOES NOT LAST MUCH LONGER THAN 10 YEARS, MUCH LESS THAN THAT WHEN EXPOSED TO HEAT. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF CARS ON THE ROAD LIKE THIS. THE MANUFACTURERS KEEP PRODUCING VEHICLES WITH THIS TYPE OF WIRING. IT'S WONDERFUL THAT THE INSULATION DEGRADES. IT'S ABSURD TO START BIODEGRADING WHEN THE CAR IS JUST FIVE OR SO YEARS OLD.

SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ALL AT ONCE MY DASH INDICATED THAT MY PASSENGER SIDE TAIL LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT, AND TURN SIGNAL HAD SIMULTANEOUSLY MALFUNCTIONED. THE WIRING HARNESS THAT ATTACHES TO THE LIGHT ASSEMBLY IS MELTED. BMW DID A RECALL OF OVER 2,500 3-SERIES VEHICLES FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE BUT HAS NOT RECALLED THE 5-SERIES (????) THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. *TR
RESTRAINT SYSTEM MALFUNCTION WARNING PERIODICALLY COMES ON WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS DEFAULT DEACTIVATES AIRBAGS. HAVE TAKEN TO DEALER TO FIX 4 TIMES, AND TODAY THEY DECIDED TO CHARGE A FEE. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH MY CAR AND MANY OTHERS WITH RECALLS OF THE EXACT SAME MODEL BUT 2 YEARS OLDER. *TR
I HAVE A 2008 BMW 528I WITH 56,000 MILES WITH A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED WARRANTY (THE FULL FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRED LESS THAN A YEAR AGO). THE VEHICLE COMPUTER IDENTIFIED 3 FAULTS AND THE ENTIRE REAR PASSENGER TAIL LIGHT CLUSTER IS NON-OPERATIONAL. I ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE BULBS AND THE ISSUE WAS NOT RESOLVED. I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A BMW DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR; I WAS SURPRISED WHEN THE ADVISOR INFORMED ME THE ISSUE IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY (CPO) AND WILL COST $400+ TO REPAIR. THE REAR LIGHTS ARE A CRITICAL SAFETY COMPONENT FOR ANY AUTOMOBILE AND MUST BE OPERATIONAL AT ALL TIMES. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS REPAIR WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE CPO WARRANTY. I CHOSE TO CONTACT BMW AND CHALLENGE THE WARRANTY COVERAGE BASED ON THE COMPONENT CRITICALITY. BMW DID NOT AGREE WITH MY POSITION AND STATED THE REPAIR WILL NOT BE COVERED BY BMW. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE AND TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY I IDENTIFIED THAT A WIRE HAS SHORTED AND MELTED SEVERAL PLASTIC PARTS RELATING TO THE TAIL LIGHT CLUSTER. BOTH THE LIGHT HOUSING AND THE WIRE ADAPTER ARE NO LONGER OPERATIONAL DUE TO THE BURNED AREA. I AM LUCKY THIS ELECTRICAL SHORT DID NOT START A FIRE BECAUSE IT IS LOCATED CLOSE TO THE BATTERY AND GAS PORT. I PERFORMED A QUICK SEARCH ONLINE AND REALIZED SEVERAL OTHER BMW 5-SERIES OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE VERY SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR VEHICLES. *TR

AS I WAS DRIVING HOME ON THE HIGHWAY MY ENGINE OVERHEATED VERY QUICKLY. IT WENT INTO SERIOUS LIMP MODE AND SLOWED DOWN TO UNDER 30MPH IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A WIDE FREEWAY. I LET IT COOL FOR OVER 20 MINUTES, AND IT OVERHEATED WITHIN 1 MINUTE OF TURNING IT BACK ON. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND HE DETERMINED THE WATER PUMP HAD FAILED. I STARTED DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND IT TURNS OUT TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE. I READ MANY MANY COMPLAINTS OF PEOPLE HAVING ELECTRICAL WATER PUMP FAILURES BEFORE 75,000 MILES. WITHOUT A WATER PUMP YOU MUST HAVE THE CAR TOWED AND ITS A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX. BMW/MINI HAVE HAD MANY CARS WITH PROBLEMATIC WATER PUMPS IN THE PAST AND THEY NEVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO RESULT IN A RECALL. *TR
WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON WHILE DRIVING THE CAR. WINDSHIELD WIPERS STARTED GOING ON (WITHOUT BEING TURNED ON). BRAKE AND TAIL LIGHTS FAILED INTERMITTENTLY. GAUGES ALL WENT TO ZERO INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. SUNROOF WOULDN'T CLOSE. DROVE TO DEALER. DIAGNOSED AS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM COMPONENTS SUBMERGED IN REAR OF CAR DUE TO BLOCKED SUNROOF DRAIN. THE SAME ISSUE WAS REPAIRED A YEAR PRIOR. THIS TIME TO LIABILITY ASSUMED BY MANUFACTURER OR DEALER BECAUSE OF "OUTSIDE FORCE" (RAIN). $9,500 REPAIR ESTIMATE. APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM/ FLAW WITH THE MODEL. DEALER DID NOT APPEAR TO DO A CHECK OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM WHILE CAR WAS IN FOR ROUTINE SERVICE A MONTH BEFORE THE INCIDENT. NO LOSS OF STEERING OR ENGINE WHILE DRIVING. *TR
I JUST HAD TO HAVE MY WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT REPLACED ON MY 2008 535I. I WAS TOLD THAT IT HAPPENS SO OFTEN, THEY KEEP THE PART ON THE SHELF! ARE THERE REALLY NO RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM?? ALSO, MY RIGHT TAIL LIGHT SHORTED OUT. I ASKED THE SHOP WHY...HE SAID THIS ALSO HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. THE WIRES FRY! NOT COOL.I REALLY THINK SOMEONE NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE THIS. DURING AN AUTOMATED CAR WASH, THE FOLLOWING WARNING DISPLAYS: "FAULT IN PASSENGER RESTRAIN SYSTEM AFFECTING AIRBAG, BELT TENSIONER, OR BELT FORCE LIMITER". THE AIRBAG AND SEAT BELT LIGHT BECOME ACTIVATED WHEN THIS HAPPENS AS WELL. THE WARNING MESSAGE WILL STAY ON FOR HOURS AFTER THE CAR GETS MODERATELY WET, EITHER IN A RAIN STORM OR A CAR WASH. EVEN IF THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND THEN TURNED BACK ON THE MESSAGE AND ERRORS WILL PERSIST. IT TAKES ABOUT 8-10 HOURS FOR THE ERROR TO GO AWAY. THIS HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY AND IS EASILY REPEATABLE. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR INDICATED AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION AND WITHIN SECONDS THE MESSAGE CHANGED TO ENGINE OVERHEATING AND THAT ENGINE IS OPERATING AT REDUCED OUTPUT. IT ALSO ADVISED TO STOP THE CAR IMMEDIATELY AND CALL THE NEAREST BMW DEALER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A BMW DEALER AND THEY IDENTIFIED ISSUE AS A FAILED WATERPUMP. THE WATER PUMP WAS REPLACED FOR ABOUT $1,400. 3 MONTHS LATER, A SIMILAR ISSUE OCCURRED WHERE ENGINE WAS HAVING ISSUES AND THE MESSAGE SAID THAT THE ENGINE IS OPERATING AT REDUCED SPEED BUT THAT IT IS SAFE TO CONTINUE. TOOK THE CAR BACK TO DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES; BUT JUST TO BE SAFE (WHATEVER THAT MEANS) THEY REPROGRAMMED THE BATTERY AND THE BILL WAS $126. AGAIN, WITH NO SPECIFIC ISSUE IDENTIFIED OR RESOLVED. *TR
ON OR ABOUT MAY 2013 I WAS TRAVELING AT 60MPH ON THE FREEWAY WHEN SUDDENLY I HEARD A LOUD BANG SOUND AND MY VEHICLE CAME TO AN AUTOMATIC STOP. SCARED AS VEHICLE BEHIND ME SCREECHED AND TURN AWAY AVOIDING ME. I REMAINED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES BEFORE THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND I TRAVELED FEARFULLY TO COMPLETE MY ASSIGNMENT. SAME DAY ON MY RETURN HOME VEHICLE STOPPED ABOUT 3 TIMES BUT I DROVE STRAIGHT TO DEALERSHIP. WITHOUT INSPECTING MY VEHICLE I WAS TOLD MY ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY WAS GONE. I WAS QUOTED VERY HIGH AMOUNT BUT SOMETHING TOLD ME A BAD ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY WOULD NOT START A VEHICLE SO I OFFERED TO TAKE MY VEHICLE HOME. MY VEHICLE STAYED HOME FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS WITHOUT USE ONLY WARM UPS REVERSE AND PARK. I DID EXTENSIVE RESEARCH TO AVOID THE FRIVOLOUS AMOUNT THE DEALERS QUOTED AND FOUND THAT THE INTEGRATED MODULE (IVM) WAS BAD. I GOT IT FOR $144 AND REPLACED IT AND PROBLEM WAS FIXED AFTER 4 MONTHS. UNTIL APRIL 2014 I DROVE THE OUT TO WORK AND BARELY TWO MILES AWAY FROM HOME I STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WHEN RELEASED THE VEHICLE SOUNDED A HUGE BANGED SOUND THIS WITH TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION LIGHT ACTIVE BRAKE LIGHTS AND SEVERAL OTHER LIGHTS ON DASH BOARD. ONCE AGAIN I SURVIVED BEING RAN OVER IN THE EARLY MORNING RUSH. TOOK VEHICLE TO BMW DEALERSHIP. TOLD GEAR SHIFTER WAS BAD AND REPLACED FOR $915 AND THEREAFTER I RECEIVED A CALL THE TRANSMISSION WAS OUT. I WAS ADVISED COST WILL BE $15000 THEN LATER THAT IT CANNOT BE FIXED AND ADVICE TO SALE IT AS IS TO SOME GUY. I OWE $17900 ON VEHICLE. CALLED BMW NORTH AMERICA TO COMPLAIN WAS TOLD NEW TRANSMISSION COST $9200 AND I'M ASKED TO PAY $7400 BEST DEAL. THERE'S NO REASON FOR TRANSMISSION ON 2008 TO GO OUT. SINCE DEALERS TOOK MY CAR THEY GAVE ME A RENTAL FOR 4 DAYS AND TOOK IT FROM ME BUT KEPT MY VEHICLE FOR ADDITIONAL 2 WEEKS AND ARE STILL HOLDING IT CALLING TO ACCEPT DEAL. *TR
The contact owns a 2008 BMW 528i. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was overheating. The check engine warning light illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle however, the failure recurred and the vehicle failed to start after several attempts. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where the battery and spark plugs were replaced however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer several times. The solenoid and the PCV valve were replaced. The contact stated that the seat belt and driver's side headlight harness connector were replaced. Additionally, the contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to respond. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal to the floorboard and the vehicle surged. The contact stated that the gear shifter failed to shift into drive and there was smoke coming out from the hood of the vehicle. The check engine warning light and the warning message "Transmission Malfunction" illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, Hendrick BMW Certified Pre-Owned South Charlotte (9029 South Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28273) where the gear shifter was replaced however, the failure persisted. The second dealer informed the contact that the transmission, the solenoid, and the mechatronics unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact later received NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

AFTER RESEARCHING, I FOUND IT WAS LED PROBLEM AND COULD ONLY BE FIXED BY A BMW SHOP. THE BMW MANUAL SUGGESTED TAKING THE CAR TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP, ON 16 APR 2013 I TOOK THE CAR TO I.G. BURTON THAT'S WHEN THEIR INSPECTION FOUND " RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT IS OUT ( FOUND THAT GROUND WIRE IS BURNT AND BULB HOLDER IS BURNT) RECOMMEND REPLACING BULB HOLDER AND GROUND WIRE. IT COST ME $374.48 TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED. *TR
THE INSULATION OF THE WIRING INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY IS CRUMBLING AND POSES A FIRE HAZARD AS THE WIRES HAVE LOST THEIR INSULATION AND CAN GET IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE ELECTRICAL CONTACT ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000.

LEFT TURN SIGNAL, BRAKE LIGHT & BACKUP LIGHT STOPPED WORKING. I HAVE THREE FAULTS, 1- TRUNK OPENS RANDOMLY, 2 - RDC UNIT IN TRUNK FLOODED BECAUSE TRUNK OPENED, 3 - BATTERY DISCHARGES. I NOTICED A FEW TIMES AFTER RETURNING TO MY CAR, THE TRUNK OPENED ON ITS OWN. I ALWAYS LOCK MY CAR AND WHEN I WALK AWAY, I MAKE SURE THAT THE TRUNK IS CLOSED. WHEN I RETURN TO MY CAR, THE TRUNK IS RANDOMLY OPENED. ONE DAY, WHEN IT WAS RAINING, THIS OCCURRED AND DRENCHED MY ENTIRE TRUNK. I DRIED THE TRUNK OUT AND STARTED DRIVING THEN I NOTICED THE TPMS STARTED FAILING. AFTER CHECKING ALL THE TPMS ANTENNAS ON MY CAR, I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A UNIT IN THE TRUNK. THIS UNIT WAS IN THE BASE OF THE TRUNK WITH NO VENTILATION. MY RDC UNIT WAS SUBMERGED IN WATER ALONG WITH MY BLUETOOTH SYSTEM. THE RDC UNIT FAILED AND I NOTICE THE BLUETOOTH SYSTEM HAS BEEN GOING IN AND OUT NOW. SMELL OF GAS FUMES IN CAR WHEN STARTED CAR. GAS AND FUMES INCREASED AS CAR IDLED. INFANT ALSO IN CAR. BEGAN FEELING LIGHTHEADED SO HAD TO ROLL DOWN WINDOWS TO MAKE IT HOME. THE GROUND CONNECTION TO THE RIGHT REAR LIGHT ASSEMBLY FAILED. THIS RESULTED IN THE RIGHT REAR LIGHTS AND TURN SIGNAL NOT OPERATING. THE CONNECTOR TO THE WIRING HARNESS WAS MELTED AND THE TAB ON THE LAMP SOCKET HOUSING (WHERE THE CONNECTOR PLUGS IN) WAS DAMAGED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A STRONG BURNING ODOR WAS EMITTED IN THE TRUNK AREA WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO START THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE BATTERY CABLES, WHICH WERE NOT PROPERLY CONNECTED. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V126000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: BATTERY: CABLES). THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 137,300.
2008 535I POWER STEERING PUMP AT 49,560 MILES. I FLUID DRIPPING (BROWNISH-REDDISH) ON MY GARAGE FLOOR AND LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND NOTICED LEAK DEVELOPED UNDER THE CAR ENGINE LEFT SIDE, SIPPED THRU THE UNDER CARRIAGE COVER PLATE. I CONTACTED BMW DEALERSHIP, SET UP APPOINTMENT FOR SERVICE ANALYSIS. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE REP AND HIS MASTER MECHANIC THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY VISIBLE LEAKAGE AND COULD BE "JUST FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE PARKED ON THE SPOT BEFORE AND JUST "TOP OFF ALL FLUIDS". I INSISTED THAT THE DRIPS WAS ON MY GARAGE CLEAN FLOOR AND UN-SATISFIED WITH THE ANSWER. I TOLD THE SERVICE REP THAT I WILL E-MAIL HIM A PICTURE I TOOK OF THE CARS UNDER CARRIAGE SHOWING THE FLUID DRIPPING. AFTER AN HOUR, HE CALLED AND ADMITTED THAT THE PICTURE HELP THEM TO "TROUBLE-SHOOT" AND THEY UN-INSTALL THE UNDER CARRIAGE COVER PLATE AND FOUND A LEAK ON THE POWER STEERING PUMP (PART COST $1,250.00 NOT INCLUDING LABOR, $1,630.00 TOTAL) AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. FORTUNATELY IT'S ALL COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED TOTAL LOSS OF VEHICLE AND CAUSE ACCIDENT OR EVEN LIVES. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 535I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED LOUD POPPING NOISES, SIMILAR TO THE SOUND OF A GUN SHOT. THE CONTACT PROCEEDED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND THE GLASS FROM THE SUNROOF BEGAN TO SHATTER, FALLING OVER HIM WHILE DRIVING. THE CONTACT MOVED OFF THE ROADWAY AND CONFIRMED THAT THE SUNROOF SHATTERED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING DAY AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT SOMETHING MUST HAVE STRUCK THE SUNROOF TO CAUSE THE GLASS TO SHATTER. THE CONTACT WAS PERSISTENT THAT NOTHING HAD STRUCK THE SUNROOF AND LATER WHILE PERFORMING RESEARCH, HE DISCOVERED THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS OF THE EXACT SAME YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL HAD ALSO ENCOUNTERED THE SUNROOF FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 36,500.
I TURNED MY CAR ON AND IT INSTANTLY NOTIFIED ME THAT MY TAILLIGHT WAS OUT. THEN I STEPPED OUT AND TAPPED THE TAILLIGHT AND IT WENT BACK ON THEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY NOW THEY ARE SAYING THE CONNECTORS ARE BURNT AND THEY WANT ME TO PAY 200$ TO REPAIR SOMETHING THAT THE MANUFACTURE SHOULD OF CORRECTED AND PERFECTED THIS IS RIDICULOUS HOPE SOMEONE HELPS ME. *TR
