TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 535I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING 30 MPH, THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 78,000.
AIR BAG SENSOR MAT IN THE PASSEBGER SEAT IS CRACKED. THEREFOR THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY IN A CRASH. ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN BMW E60 SEDANS. THERE HAS BEEN A PREVIOUS RECALL TO BMW'S IN EARLIER YEARS. WHY IS IT NOT A RECALL NOW? OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF THE SAFETY SYSTEM AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *TR
RIGHT REAR BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE INDICATOR ON DASH BOARD TURNED ON. INSPECTING THE LIGHT BULBS, ALL SEEMED TO BE IN WORKING CONDITION. FUSES WERE ALSO GOOD. FOUND THE GROUND WIRE PIN AND SOCKET ON THE BULB HOLDER BURNED OUT PRETTY SEVERELY. PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE INTERMITTENT AS THE INDICATOR WOULD TURN ON AND OFF BEFORE EVENTUALLY STAYING ON PERMANENTLY. ALSO, INDICATOR WOULD SHOW TURN SIGNAL FAILURE AT FIRST, THEN BRAKE LIGHT, THEN RIGHT BACK UP LIGHT, THEN ALL THREE. EVENTUALLY IT SETTLED IN ON BRAKE LIGHT ONLY. POTENTIAL FOR ACCIDENTS RELATED TO TURN SIGNALS NOT WORKING AND WARNING OTHER DRIVERS OF BRAKING AND/OR TURNING. ALSO POTENTIAL FOR AN ELECTRICAL FIRE BEGINNING IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE CLOSE TO WHERE THE FUEL FILLER CAP IS LOCATED. CHECKING ONLINE FORUMS FOR A REPAIR, IT APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM, AND THE SUBJECT OF AN EARLIER RECALL ON OTHER BMW MODELS. *TR
THE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. THE VEHICLE INFORMATION SYSTEM SAID THE FUEL PUMP WAS MALFUNCTIONING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THE FUEL PUMP FAILED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A PARKING BARRIER ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. AS A RESULT OF THE IMPACT FROM THE AIR BAG, THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A BROKEN LEFT ARM. THE CONTACT WAS NOT AWARE IF A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF HIS DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
WARNING CAME ON THAT THE RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT MALFUNCTIONED. WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS THE WARNING WENT AWAY BUT THEN CAME BACK INTERMITTENTLY AND ALSO STATED THAT THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE LIGHT AND TURN SIGNAL HAD MALFUNCTIONED. THESE WARNINGS WERE INTERMITTENT. ABOUT A WEEK LATER THE SIGNALS CAME ON EVERY TIME THE CAR WAS DRIVEN. I LOOKED AT THE LIGHTING HOUSING AND DISCOVERED THAT BOTH THE PLUG AND HOUSING HAD MELTED DUE TO A BROWN WIRE. I WILL BE TAKING THE CAR TO THE SHOP TOMORROW TO GET FIXED BUT IT SEEMS MORE DAMAGE COULD HAVE BEEN DONE UNLESS I DISCOVERED THE EXISTENCE OF THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 528 XI. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE AT A TRAFFIC STOP, THE VEHICLE STALLED AS THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THEY ADVISED THAT THE CAM SENSORS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE CAM SENSORS. APPROXIMATELY THREE MOTHS AFTER THE REPAIR THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR FURTHER REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 129,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I OWN A 2008 BMW 535XI. ONLY MONTHS AFTER THE BUMPER-TO-BUMPER FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRED, THE WATER PUMP FAILED. A CAR IS RENDERED INOPERABLE WITHOUT THIS CRITICAL COMPONENT. BECAUSE OF THIS FAILURE, I WAS LEFT STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF A MAJOR HIGHWAY, WITH MY WIFE AND KIDS IN THE CAR, UNABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE NEAREST EXIST. THE WATER PUMP FAILED IMMEDIATELY AND COMPLETELY WITH LITTLE-TO-NO WARNING. I WAS EXTREMELY SURPRISED AND DISAPPOINTED THAT THE ORIGINAL BMW WATER PUMP COULD NOT EVEN LAST FOR 50,000 MILES. HOW COULD THIS BE? WHAT TYPE OF BMW QUALITY CHECKS WAS THIS CRITICAL COMPONENT SUBJECTED TO? I HAVE ALSO HEARD THAT THIS FAILURE IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR MY MODEL VEHICLE. IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE. WOW! MOST OTHER VEHICLES HAVE WATER PUMPS LASTING OVER 100,000 MILES AND WELL BEYOND. GIVEN THE CRITICALLY OF THIS POTENTIAL PREMATURE COMPONENT FAILURE, WHY HASN'T BMW ISSUED A RECALL? AFTER BEING LEFT STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND OUT MORE THAN $1,200 FOR THE REPAIR (PLUS TOWING), I AM LEFT WITH A MUCH LOWER OPINION OF BMW QUALITY AND SAFETY. *TR
THE 8 PIN CONNECTOR TO THE RIGHT REAR LIGHT ASSEMBLY MELTED. TURN SIGNAL, BRAKE LIGHT STOPPED WORKING ONE WIRE SEEMS CORRODED. *TR
I SMELL GAS AND ITS STRONG I DON'T SEE ANY LEAKS OF ANY KIND AND WHEN I PUT GAS IN THE CAR I DON'T SEE LEAKS, BUT I SMELL GAS EVEN IF I HAVEN'T PUT GAS IN. *TR
( I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER THIS VEHICLE) WHILE REPLACING A BURNT OUT HEADLIGHT, I NOTICED THAT THE INSULATION IN THE SEALED HEADLIGHT WAS MISSING. WHEN I CHECKED THE OPPOSITE SIDE, I FOUND THE SAME THING, THE INSULATION WAS BROKEN AND MISSING. BEING THAT THIS IS A SEALED HEADLIGHT HOUSING, I AM UNABLE TO REMOVE AND REPAIR THE PROBLEM. BMW PARTS STATED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS IS NOT SOLD FOR THOSE LIGHTS. ONE HAS TO PURCHASE A COMPLETELY NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY AT A AVERAGE COST OF $700.00+. *TR
I NOTICED THAT WHEN I DRIVE WITH THE SUNROOF COVER OPEN, NOT THE ACTUAL WINDOW, THERE IS A LOUD WHISTLING SOUND IN THE CAR. IT SOUNDS LIKE AN AIR GAP OR SOMETHING. WHEN I CLOSE THE SUNROOF COVER, IT IS NOT AS LOUD, BUT YOU CAN STILL HEAR WIND HOWLING. I KNOW THERE AREN'T ANY LEAKS BECAUSE WHEN IT RAINS, THERE IS NO WATER COMING INTO MY CAR. I'M CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON. *TR
A COOLER LEAKED IN THE TRUNK OF MY WAGON AND UNDER THE FLOOR THERE LIES EXPOSED UNPROTECTED HIGHLY VALUABLE ELECTRONICS, WHICH SHORTED OUT MY CAR AND CREATED A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED SHOCKS AMONGST OTHER IMPORTANT SYSYTEMS, MY DEALER SAYS HE HAS SEEN "MANY OF THESE" AND CLEARLY THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE ON THE WEB THAT HAVE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM, THE NEXT YEAR ACCORDING TO BMW THIS EXTREMELY DUMB DESIGN WAS CHANGED. CLEARLY THE TRUNK SHOULD BE A PLACE TO PUT ITEMS THAT MAY BE WET [FISHING TACKLE, SCUBA, SNOW BOOTS, SKIIS, COOLERS, MILK AND GROCERIES....] AND ONE SHOULD NOT BE PENALIZED A $1700 DOLLAR BILL EVERYTIME SOMETHING SPILLS. MY DEALER REPLACED THE MALFUNCTIONING ELECTRONICS THEN COVERED THE ELECTRONICS IN PLASTIC BUT THIS IS CLEARLY A JURY-RIGGED FIX. PLEASE HELP! *TR

LEFT SIDE OF THE CENTER DASH TRIM CONTINUES TO POP OFF. OCCURS EVERY 4 MONTHS AT $40 A REPAIR. REPAIRED 3 TIMES; ONCE UNDER WARRANTY AND TWICE OUT OF WARRANTY. THE TRIM POPS OUT ON ITS OWN, HOWEVER THE BMW DEALERSHIP CONTINUES TO STATE THAT EXCESSIVE FORCE IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THAT IS NOT THE CASE. THIS IS NOT A CHARACTERISTIC TO EXPECT ON THIS CLASS OF VEHICLE. AN OWNER SHOULD NOT EXPECT TO MAINTAIN THE DASH TRIM. *TR
WE BOUGHT A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 2008 535XI IN NOVEMBER 2010. IT HAD 36,000 MILES. AT 59,000 MILES WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH ON A MAJORY HIGHWAY IN LONG ISLAND AFTER SITTING IN TRAFFIC FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF ON A 70 DEGREE DAY, THE CAR JUST SHUT DOWN. IT WOULD BARELY STEER AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. WE WERE LUCKY THAT THE BRAKES WORKED AND WERE ABLE TO GLIDE OVER TO THE SHOULDER. COMPUTER SAID ENGINE OVERHEATED AND IT WAS THE RED INDICATOR WHICH IS THE WORST. WE GOT TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP AND ARE TOLD ITS THE WATER PUMP. WE DID HAVE THE CAR SERVICED AT A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP 4 DAYS BEFORE THIS HAPPENED AND TOLD THEM ABOUT A CLICKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE BUT THEY DIDN'T HEAR IT SO NOTHING WAS DONE. THE INCIDENT WAS VERY SCARY AND MAKES ME NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 12V126000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY:CABLES). AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIR WERE ON A NATIONAL BACK ORDER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000.
THE WARNING CAME ON THAT THE RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT MALFUNCTIONED. WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS THE WARNING WENT AWAY BUT THEN CAME BACK INTERMITTENTLY AND ALSO STATED THAT THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE LIGHT AND TURN SIGNAL HAD MALFUNCTIONED. THESE WARNINGS GO ON AND OFF SO MY HUSBAND PULLED THE HOUSING FOR THE LIGHT OUT AND DISCOVERED THE CONNECTOR PLUG AND HOUSING HAD MELTED BECAUSE THE BROWN WIRE WAS BURNT AND MELTED. SO HE WENT TO THE DEALER SHIP TO GET ANOTHER HOUSING UNIT AND NEW CONNECTOR TO FIX THE PROBLEM. AND A FEW MONTHS LATER THE OTHER SIDE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND HE REPLACED IT AS WELL... NOW BOTH ARE BURNT AGAIN. I CALLED THE DEALER SHIP TO TAKE MY CAR IN FOR THIS ISSUE AND THEY WANT $140 TO LOOK AT IT AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF THIS ISSUE BEFORE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NOW THAT I LOOK ONLINE IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL HAVE THE SAME THING GOING ON. THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL. I FEEL LIKE THIS WILL KEEP HAPPENING SINCE BOTH HAVE BEEN REPLACED ALREADY AND IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN. SOMETHING IS WRONG. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE CRASH SAFETY MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IF NOT, THE AIRBAGS WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH NOR WOULD THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT OPERATE PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 73,067.
DRIVING MY DAD TO ER FOR MEDICAL EMERGENCY AND DRIVING WITHIN SPEED LIMIT. CAR BEGINS TO SLOW DOWN ON OWN. COULD NOT GO MORE THAN 5MPH WHEN CAR SHUT DOWN AND STATED ENGINE OVERHEATED. WE WERE STALLED ON BUSY HIGHWAY. ONCE ABLE TO GET SOMEONE TO TRANSPORT MY FATHER TO ER, HAD TO GET CAR TOWED. WATER PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED FOR NO FAULT OF MINE. MY SISTER ALSO HAS BMW 2008 3 SERIES AND SAME THING HAPPENED TO HER YESTERDAY---STRANDED ON SIDE OF ROAD--WATER PUMP HAD TO BE CHANGED. TOW TRUCK DRIVER STATED HE IS TOWING BMW'S ALL THE TIME WITH MALFUNCTIONING WATER PUMPS. THIS REALLY NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO BEFORE SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS TO STRANDED DRIVERS. *TR
GROUND WIRE FOR PASSENGER SIDE TAIL LIGHT BURNED UP. GROUND WIRE, BOTH SIDES OF ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR, AND TAIL LIGHT BULB HOLDER ALL BURNED UP. PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE LIGHT, TAIL LIGHT, TURN SIGNAL AND BACK UP LIGHT DO NOT FUNCTION AT ALL. IMPROPERLY RATED FUSE DID NOT BLOW BEFORE CIRCUIT BURNED UP AND MELTED. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS UNRESOLVED FIRE SAFETY ISSUES WITH A 2008 BMW 535XI *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED ON FEB 14, 2012, THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, SIX DAYS LATER, A SPARK OF FIRE AND BALL OF SMOKE OCCURRED AS THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE ALTERNATOR WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AN INSPECTION ALSO REVEALED AN OIL LEAK. *JB THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE BURST INTO FLAMES AND EXPLODED, TOTALING THE VEHICLE. THE ENTIRE FRONT HOOD AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT WERE MELTED AND DESTROYED, AS WELL AS THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER AREAS WERE AFFECTED BY THE FIRE. THE CONSUMER AND HIS PASSENGER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER IN DECEMBER 2013, AND JANUARY 2014 AFTER COMPLAINING ABOUT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. HE COMPLAINED OF LOW COOLANT, THE TRUNK RANDOMLY OPENING, THE KEY NOT STARTING THE VEHICLE RIGHT AWAY, AND THE CLOCK SUDDENLY SHOWING A THE WRONG TIME. BOTH TIMES, THE DEALER STATED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. UPDATED 03/10/14
AS SOON AS I HIT THE START BUTTON, A SECOND LATER, - JOLT OR CLUNK - IT'S NOT HAPPENED ALL STARTS. SOME STARTS WITH NOISE SOME DOESN'T. IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS FROM THE GEARBOX BUT WHEN OUTSIDE SOUNDS LIKE ITS FROM THE DIFF AREA. OCCASIONALLY THE CAR EVEN ROCKS. THE INTENSITY OF THE CLUNK VARIES EVERY START. SOME VERY LIGHT, SOME HEARD VERY LOUD HARD. IT HAPPEN WHEN IT'S IN PARKED. SHIFT GEAR AND DRIVE IS NORMAL NO NOISE OR ANYTHING...
UPON TURNING THE SEAT HEATER ON I NOTICED A BURNING SMELL AND SMOKE INSIDE THE CAR. THE SEAT WAS UNUSUALLY HOT. I FELT A BURNING SENSATION AND PULLED OVER TO FIND THAT THE SEAT HEATING ELEMENT HAD BURNED THROUGH THE LEATHER AND TWO LAYERS OF A HEAVY DUTY WINTER COAT. WHEN I TURNED IT OFF THE SMOKE STOPPED. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD IT IS NOT PART OF A SAFETY RECALL OR UNDER WARRANTY. REFUSED ANY MONETARY CONSIDERATION AND WANTED $1400 TO REPAIR. CONSIDERING THE CAR COULD CATCH ON FIRE THE REPAIR SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE AND REPAIRED FOR FREE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHERE THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE ELECTRICAL WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,500. KMJ

THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE VACCUM PUMP WAS LEAKING OIL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO NOTIFIED, BUT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V446000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 85,000.
2008 BMW 550I. CONSUMER STATES WHEN NORMALLY DOWN SHIFTING TO REDUCE SPEED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT DISENGAGE WHEN THE CLUTCH WAS PUSHED IN *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE CLUTCH WAS RELEASED IN A LOWER GEAR, IT MAINTAINED THE HIGHER SPEED AND MERELY REVVED THE ENGINE. THE CONSUMER LEARNED HE COULD NOT DOWN SHIFT, BUT HAD TO BREAK INSTEAD. MY 2008 BMW 528 XI REAR PASSENGER LIGHTS GROUND WIRE BURNED UP ON 11/11/11 BEING REPLACE TODAY FOR $350 AT VOB BMW IN MARYLAND. *TR
I WAS CHANGING A FLAT TIRE AND THE JACK JUST FAILED ON ME LAST NIGHT AND ALMOST BUT MY ARM OFF. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THE JACK WAS BEING USED. IT WAS A FLAT ROAD AND IT WASN'T WINDY. THE CAR WAS ON A STABLE SURFACE WITH NO STONES OR ANYTHING ELSE. THE CAR ALMOST LANDED ON MY HANDS AND BENT THE ROTOR BACK PLATE !!!! I THEN NOTED THAT THE JACK WAS VERY UNSTABLE AND MAYBE A LITTLE BENT. I GOT HELP FROM A TRUCK WHO STOPPED BY. I CHECKED WITH THE DEALER TODAY TO SEE IF THEY CAN REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY (3 YRS OLD BASICALLY) BUT THEY JUST SAID NO. *TR
TRANSMISSION FAILED ON TWO OCCASIONS. FIRST TIME WAS ON INTERSTATE 95. THE CAR STALLED IN MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC AND I WAS LUCKY IN PULLING CAR ONTO SHOULDER. WARNING MESSAGE CAME ON TO INDICATE A TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND THAT THE CAR SHOULD BE TAKEN TO A BMW DEALER TO BE FIXED. WHEN THIS OCCURS THE CAR STALLS AND MUST BE PULLED OVER TO THE ROAD SHOULDER. THIS ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION IS PROBLEMATIC AND A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE WHEN THE CAR STALLS YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD; IF NOT YOU COULD BE KILLED, ESPECIALLY WHEN TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A BMW DEALER TO BE FIXED. HOWEVER, THE SAME TRANSMISSION INCIDENT HAPPENED FEBRUARY 4, 2012 AND I WAS CAUGHT IN TRAFFIC NEARLY HAD AN ACCIDENT. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS AT MODERATE AND HIGH SPEEDS. MY CONCERN IS THAT I COULD BE KILLED IF I AM UNABLE GET THE STALLED CAR PULLED TO THE SHOULDER OFF THE ROAD. *TR
THE ACTIVE STEERING STOPS WORKING WITHOUT WARNING, DRAMATICALLY CHANGING THE HANDLING OF THE CAR. IT RANDOMLY STARTS & STOPS WORKING. THE DEALER FIRST DENIED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM, THEN AFTER 3 VISITS "FIXED" IT WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I HAVE GONE OFF THE ROAD, BUT NOT HIT ANYTHING...YET. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, THE RIM SEPARATED CAUSING THE TIRE TO GO FLAT. HAD WE BEEN TRAVELING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. BMW, AS I HAVE COME TO FIND OUT, DECLINES ANY RESPONSIBILITY. DO YOUR JOB!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 535I WITH MICHELIN PILOT SPORT PS2 RUN FLAT TIRES, SIZE 275/35/R18. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CENTER OF BOTH REAR TIRES WAS WORN TO THE POINT WHERE THE CHORD WAS VISIBLE. THERE WERE NO FAILURES WITH THE FRONT TIRES. THE ALIGNMENT WAS TESTED BUT NO FAILURES WERE FOUND. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE DOT NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.
WIRES INSIDE HEADLIGHTS HAVE INSULATION CRUMBLING OFF. FIRE RISK. SO MANY BMW'S HAVE THIS PROBLEM. A CLEAR ISSUE THAT BMW KNOWS ABOUT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 535I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE REAR WHEEL WAS CRACKING. AFTER PURCHASING A NEW TIRE HE THEN NOTICED THE CRACKED WHEEL IN TWO DIFFERENT PLACES. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED WHO DECLINED TO WARRANT THE WHEELS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO ALSO STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT WARRANT THE FAILURE. THE WHEELS WERE REPAIRED AT A COST OF $484 BY THE CONTACT. THEY OFFERED NO OTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 27,000.
THREE WKS AGO MY 08 528I WAS MAKING A RATTLING SOUND IN THE ENGINE, TIN-CAN SOUNDING. TOOK THE CAR FOR SERVICE & THEY REPLACED MY LIFTERS AND RELATED PARTS. THEY SAID THAT THE LIFTERS ARE "KNOWN" FOR GOING BAD ON THE 5 SERIES AND IT'S TYPICALLY DUE TO SEASONAL CHANGES. WHEN MY HUSBAND BROUGHT THE CAR HOME TO ME I WAS VERY UPSET BECAUSE THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE, NOT AS LOUD AS BEFORE. I CALLED BMW AND MADE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT, CITING THAT THIS PROBLEM HAD NOT BEEN RESOLVED AND IT NEEDED TO BE LOOKED AT AGAIN. THE APPOINTMENT WITH A LOANER COULD NOT BE SCHEDULED FOR ANOTHER 10 DAYS, SO WE WAITED. DURING THOSE 10 DAYS THE VEHICLE STARTED TO TAKE LONGER TO TURNOVER AT START UP. I WOULD ALSO FEEL THE ENGINE LIGHTLY SHUTTERING AS I DROVE AT SPEEDS AVERAGING 35-50 MILES PER HOUR. MONDAY 05/23/11 WAS MY REQUESTED APPOINTMENT; HOWEVER BECAUSE MY 15 MO. OLD BABY WAS ILL WE HAD TO CANCEL. THANK GOODNESS WE DID BECAUSE MY CAR WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT THE 20 MILES OF FREEWAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. TODAY, 05/25/11, I MADE A LEFT OUT OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND AS I ACCELERATED APPROX. 50 YARDS, MY ENGINE BUCKED (FELT LIKE THE BOTTOM FELL OUT), I LOST SPEED DRAMATICALLY. SUDDENLY, STEERING BECAME NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE AND I WAS FORCED TO "TURN" INTO A SMALL SHOPPING CENTER. HOWEVER, I LOST ABILITY TO STEER UPON ENTERING THE PARKING LOT. MY CAR WOULD RESPOND TO NOTHING BUT THE BRAKES (THANK GOD THOSE ATLEAST WORKED). I LOOKED DOWN AT MY GEAR SHIFT TO ATTEMPT TO REVERSE AWAY FROM THE CURB AND MANEUVER INTO A PARKING SPACE, THOUGH MY CAR WAS THROWN INTO NEUTRAL & WOULD NOT RESPOND TO ANYTHING BUT "PARK". I ATTEMPTED TO STARTUP AGAIN BUT ENGINE WOULDN'T TURN OVER. IT WAS DEAD. WITHIN MOMENTS MY ABS, CHECK ENG, AND BATTERY LIGHTS ILLUMINATED & CORRESPONDING MSGS CAME ONTO MY COMMUNICATION SCREEN. CAR WAS TOWED. AWAITING DEALERSHIP RESPONSE IN THE AM. AFTER SEEING PRIOR COMPLAINTS, I SEE SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE FIRED. THE US GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO STEP IN BEFORE PEOPLE DIE! THE CAR PULLS HARD TO THE RIGHT AND NOW SHAKES ABOVE 20MPH. *TR
VEHICLE IS 2008 528I SEDAN. THE TIRE MONITOR PRESSURE INDICATOR WAS DISPLAYED. I TOOK THE CAR TO A BMW DEALERSHIP TO CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE. THEY SAID THE TIRE PRESSURE WAS OK ON ALL 4 TIRES. HOWEVER, IT CONTINUED TO DISPLAY THE TMP INDICATOR. THEN FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, VARIOUS ALERT INDICATORS WOULD DISPLAY BRIEFLY AND THE DATE AND TIME WERE NOT SET. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DETERMINED FLUID (REFERRED TO BY BMW AS 'AN OUTSIDE INFLUENCE') LEAKED FROM INSIDE THE TRUNK OF VEHICLE INTO THE RDC (COMMUNICATION) MODULE, WHICH IS LOCATED UNDER THE TRUNK. THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED THE SUBMERGED FLUID SHORTED OUT THE MODULE AND MELTED THE HARNESS. THE RDC MODULE AND THE HARNESS WERE REPLACED. THE TRUNK WAS NOT WET SO I DID NOT REALIZE ANYTHING HAD LEAKED NOR WAS I AWARE THERE WERE CRITICAL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS LOCATED DIRECTLY UNDER THE TRUNK, WHICH WERE NOT PROPERLY PROTECTED. TO PLACE THE RDC MODULE IN AN AREA WHERE LIQUIDS CAN PENETRATE (I.E. OPEN DRUNK WHILE RAINING, GROCERIES SPILLING'), IS EXTREMELY POOR VEHICLE DESIGN. SINCE THE PROBLEM WAS A RESULT OF 'AN OUTSIDE INFLUENCE' IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND IT COST ALMOST $1000 TO FIX. *TR
RATTLE FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT THAT DISSIPATES ONCE ENGINE WARMS UP. ADVISED THAT THE TURBO CHARGERS ARE FAILING AND NEED TO BE REPLACED, ONLY 66K MILES! ESTIMATED $3K IN REPAIR COST! *TR
WHILE DRIVING, THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL PANEL [SPEEDOMETER, RADIO, DISPLAY SCREEN, ETC.] BEGIN TO CLICK ON/OFF EACH TIME REAPPEARING WITH APPEARED TO BE EVERYTHING BUT ENGLISH. SOON TO FOLLOW, I RECEIVED A WARNING LIGHT INDICATING "ENGINE OVERHEATED", "ENGINE POWER WAS BEING REDUCED", AND "TO STOP THE VEHICLE" WHEN POSSIBLE. UNFORTUNATELY, I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC AND COULD NOT IMMEDIATELY PULL OFF TO THE SHOULDER. THE VEHICLE DIDN'T TRAVEL VERY FAR BEFORE COMPLETE ENGINE POWER WAS LOST DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF "FIRE RISK" AS INDICATED ON THE PANEL. *TR
GROUND WIRE FOR PASSENGER SIDE TAIL LIGHT BURNED UP. GROUND WIRE, BOTH SIDES OF ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR, AND TAIL LIGHT BULB HOLDER ALL BURNED UP. PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE LIGHT, TAIL LIGHT, TURN SIGNAL AND BACK UP LIGHT DO NOT FUNCTION AT ALL. IMPROPERLY RATED FUSE DID NOT BLOW BEFORE CIRCUIT BURNED UP AND MELTED. THIS CIRCUIT IS NOT DESIGNED CORRECTLY. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD TO MYSELF AND ANYONE DRIVING BEHIND ME. CAR MODEL IS A 2008 528XI. *TR
ENGINE MALFUNCTION! REDUCED POWER WAS THE MESSAGE I RECEIVED ON MY DASH DISPLAY. I TOOK PHOTOS OF THE DISPLAYED MESSAGE. CAR WENT FROM 65 MPH DOWN TO 18 MPH IN A MATTER OF SECONDS IN THE FAR LEFT LANE OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. HAD TO CHUG AND LURCH OVER THREE LANES OF SPEEDING TRAFFIC TO GET TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. I'VE ALREADY HAD THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED BY BMW RECALL (A RECALL THAT I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED BY BMW THAT THE RECALL EXISTED). APPARENTLY THE FUEL PUMP RECALL WAS NOT ALL OF THE PROBLEM AS THIS SAME ENGINE MALFUNCTION STILL OCCURS AND THE CAR STILL BEHAVES THE SAME AS BEFORE THE FUEL PUMP RECALL. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THE VERY NEXT DAY. HE CLEARED A CODE IN MY ONBOARD COMPUTER AND DID NOTHING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM WITH MY BMW 535XI WAGON IS GOING TO GET SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED. I'VE READ MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ONLINE FROM BLOGGERS REGARDING THIS SAME PROBLEM. WHY IS BMW NOT FIXING THE PROBLEM. AT THE TIME THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED THE DEALER ALSO REPROGRAMMED MY CAR'S ONBOARD COMPUTER AND CHECKED THE FUEL IN THE TANK WHICH, ACCORDING TO THE DEALER APPEARED TO BE FINE. *TR

VEHICLE SHUTS OFF UNEXPECTEDLY AND FAILS TO RESTART, ADDITIONALLY THE VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY FAIL TO START. THE ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, WHEN DRIVING SLOWLY, OR SHORTLY AFTER SHIFTING THE CAR INTO DRIVE FROM PARK. NO WARNINGS OR ERRORS ARE GENERALLY ENCOUNTERED OR LOGGED HOWEVER IN RARE INSTANCES DRIVETRAIN WARNINGS ARE DISPLAYED. THE ENGINE DISPLAYS NO STRANGE BEHAVIOR PRIOR TO THIS OCCURRING AND SHUTS OFF AS IF IT WERE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE REGULARLY FAILS TO START. THE ENGINE DOES NOT TURN OVER AT ALL OR MAKE ANY INDICATION THAT IT IS ATTEMPTING TO START. THE VEHICLE RESPONDS AS THOUGH THE IGNITION WAS NOT ACTIVATED AND WAS NEVER INSTRUCTED TO START. AFTER A RANDOM TIME INTERVAL FROM 5 MINUTES TO 2 HOURS THE CAR WILL START AS IF NO PROBLEMS WERE EVER ENCOUNTERED. NO ERRORS ARE LOGGED IN THE ECU. THE MANUFACTURER HAS YET TO FIND ANY ISSUES WHICH THEY CLAIM ARE REPAIRABLE AFTER APPROXIMATELY 40 DAYS OF SHOP TIME AND WELL OVER 100 OCCURRENCES. *TR
VEHICLE IS 2008 BMW 535XI WAGON. BLOCKED SUNROOF DRAINS MEANT THAT WATER DRAINED INTO THE VEHICLE, GATHERING IN THE TRUNK WHERE THE ELECTRONICS SIT. CAR HAD MULTIPLE ENGINE FAILURES AND WARNINGS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE, ELECTRICAL FAILURE, SUNROOF ERROR AND TPM FAILURE. CAUSE PER BMW WAS BLOCKAGE OF REAR SUNROOF DRAIN. THIS IS A COMMON FAULT CAUSED BY POOR DESIGN OF THE SUNROOF DRAINS (TOO NARROW AND PRONE TO BLOCKING). A RECALL ON THE SEDAN 5 SERIES MOVES THE ELECTRONICS TO A HIGHER POSITION IN THE VEHICLE TO PREVENT THE ELECTRONICS DAMAGE BUT BMW STATE THERE IS NO SIMILAR MOVE POSSIBLE FOR THE WAGON., ALSO IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BEFORE IT OCCURS AND BMW HAS NO SUGGESTED SERVICE STEPS T P[REVENT OCCURRENCE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS ITS VERY DANGEROUS AND V EXPENSIVE TO REMEDIATE. BMW OCCASIONALLY COVERS A GOODWILL REPAIR BUT WON'T COVER UNDER WARRANTY. ADVICE FROM BMW IS NOT PARK THE VEHICLE UNDER TREES! DEALER INDICATES WHEN THIS RE-OCCURS BMW WILL NOT COVER THE COST AGAIN. *TR

THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED BUT IT CRACKED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 30,100. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 22,000.
CAR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, REDUCED POWER ON DASH, AND SLUGGISH. TOWED CAR TO DEALER, REPLACED SPARK PLUGS AND HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, TOOK TO DEALER, NEEDED PRESSURE SENSOR. THIS HAS OCCURRED 4 TIMES NOW, DEALER STATES THIS IS ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE, AND HAVE I WOULD HAVE TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN WHENEVER THIS OCCURRED, NO LOANER CAR AVAILABLE.
