2017 DEC - DIESEL EXHAUST FUMES IN CABIN. MAG BMW DEALER REPLACED EGR PRE-COOLER, AND INTAKE TURBO LINE.
MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE 12/19/2017. MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR THE FUEL PUMP RECALL AND CHANGE OF SPARK PLUGS. A YEAR LATER IT WENT BACK INTO THE SHOP FOR REPLACING A FUEL INJECTOR ALONG WITH SPARK PLUGS. 2 MONTHS LATER ITS BACK IN THE BMW SHOP FOR FUEL PRESSURE PUMP & TURBO HOSE. MY CAR IS CONSTANTLY IN THE SHOP AND I AM PAYING FOR EVERYTHING.
WIRES INSIDE THE COMFORT ACCESS DOOR HANDLES HAVE APPARENTLY SHORTED OUT AND ARE CAUSING THE DRIVER SIDE REAR DOOR HANDLE TO BE VERY HOT TO THE TOUCH (MEASURED AT 134 DEG F). PEMBROKE PINES BMW AND BMW NA WERE NOTIFIED IN NOVEMBER. THEY ADVISED THAT I WOULD HAVE PAY $700 TO HAVE IT REPLACED SINCE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. LATER THEY OFFERED A 20% DISCOUNT. AN INTERNET SEARCH REVEALED IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE SHORT MAY EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE WIRES OR OTHER MATERIALS IN THE DOOR TO CATCH ON FIRE. I MEASURED AND PHOTOGRAPHED THE DOOR HANDLE AND ADJACENT AREA. THE DOOR WAS 84.8 DEGREES F WHILE THE DOOR HANDLE WAS 134 DEGREES F.
I NOTICE WHEN TURNING A VIBRATION OR SHUDDER COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. DOING SOME ONLINE RESEARCH, INCLUDING THE NHTSA SITE, I FIND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR X5S. THE APPARENT FIX FOR THIS IS TO REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE, A SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLAR REPAIR. I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY WIFE BUT I WOULD NOT HAVE HER DRIVE IT BECAUSE BETWEEN THE TRANSFER CASE AND THE DRIVESHAFT, BOTH KNOWN ISSUES, I AM CONCERNED FOR HER SAFETY. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 69,000 MILES ON IT, THERE IS NO WAY IT SHOULD HAVE THESE KIND OF PROBLEMS BARRING A VERY POOR DESIGN.
I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL LETTERS ABOUT THE AIRBAG RECALL IN THE PAST YEAR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO JACKIE COOPER OF EDMOND OK SAID THEY HAD THE PART I TOOK MY X5D IN FOR 3 DAYS BUT WHEN I PICKED IT UP THEY HAD NOT REPLACED EITHER AIRBAG. I RECEIVED ANOTHER NOTICE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE BUT THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THEY ONLY HAVE THE DRIVERS SIDE BAG PARTS!
TAKATA RECALL: I CALLED THE WAYNE, NJ BMW DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES TO REPLACE THE AFFECTED TAKATA INFLATORS AIRBAGS. WAYNE BMW DEALERSHIP STATED THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLACE TAKATA INFLATORS AIRBAGS.
ENGINE DRIVE BELT IDLER PULLEY BOLT SNAPPED WHILE VEHICLE WAS IDLING. LOST POWER STEERING, WATER PUMP, AND ALTERNATOR DUE TO DRIVE BELT BEING DISCONNECTED. THIS BOLT WAS REPLACED AS PART OF RECALL CAMPAIGN #12V550. HOWEVER, THE RECALLED PART HAS NOW FAILED, AND THERE ARE MANY ONLINE REPORTS OF FAILURES OF THE NEW RECALLED PART. PART WAS REPLACED ACCORDING TO THE DEALER AT 13,000 MILES, AND SUBSEQUENT FAILURE OCCURRED AT 77,000.
TAKATA RECALL. WE HAVE A TERRIBLE TRACK RECORD WITH THE TWO LOCAL DEALERS, AS THEY DO NOT DO WORK THAT THEY SAY THEY DO. THEY ALSO MAKE IT VERY DIFFICULT TO GET CARS INTO SERVICE AND BACK AGAIN. I DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH THEM AGAIN. THEY HAVE ZERO RESPECT FOR THE LAW, THE CAR SHOWS THE "AUDI AUTO ACCELERATE PROBLEM" WHEN COMING OFF THE FREEWAY AND I PARKING LOTS. THE CAR WAS DELIVERED IN A STATE WHERE IT COULD NOT BE DRIVEN ON THE STREET LEGALLY, AND THEY HAD THE GALL TO DEMAND THAT WE SIGN A WAIVER WHICH WE DID TO DO. THEY HAD TO FIX THE LEGAL ISSUES THE CAR HAD.
OUR BMW X5 DIESEL HAD A RECALL DONE BACK IN 2012 FOR EGR VALVE BEING FAULTY. BMW'S EMISSIONS ARE FAILING ON THEIR 2009-2011 DIESELS. WE RECENTLY DROPPED OFF OUR BMW X5 FOR SERVICE AND FOR ANOTHER RECALL, DISCOVERED BMW WILL NOT COVER THEIR FAULT PART THIS TIME AROUND. THEY HAVE A BAD DESIGN WITH THE EGR'S AND THEY KNOW IT, THAT'S WHY THE RECALL WAS DONE BEFORE, NOW THE RECALL PART FAILED. THEY WANT US TO PAY FOR IT. THEY ARE NOT TREATING THIS ISSUE WITH MUCH ATTENTION. OUR ENGINE IS GOING TO FAIL BECAUSE OF THIS RECALL. DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO AT THIS POINT.
I RECEIVED AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION REDUCED POWER WARNING ON MY VEHICLE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS I LOSS POWER AN CANNOT GO OVER 20 MPH. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED .I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS AN EGR AND VACUUM LINE PROBLEM. DOING A SIMPLE SEARCH ON THE WEB THOUSANDS OF OTHER X5 DIESEL OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. I CONTACTED BMW NORTH AMERICA TOLD THEM OF THE ISSUE, AFTER A WEEK THEY GOT BACK TO ME AND SAID THE PARTS WERE NOT COVERED EVEN THOUGH THEY GET MANY COMPLAINTS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X5. THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING THROUGH THE VENTS INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ALSO SMELLED A STRONG BURNING ODOR. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V336000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING), BUT THE CONTACT WAS NOT NOTIFIED. WHILE DRIVING, THE IDLER PULLEY BOLT FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 18V248000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) AND 17V683000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN DUE TO THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WELL LAST YEAR AT THIS EXACT SAME TIME THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT BROKE CAUSING A DOMINO EFFECT OF DAMAGES THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT SNAPPED AND SMASHED THE TRANSMISSION PAN AND DENTED THE EXHAUST PIPE. SERVICE ADVISER AT DEALER WAS NOT WANTING TO REPAIR THE DAMAGES UNDER RECALL PROGRAM ACTED LIKE THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE OR THE RECALL IN EFFECT. AFTER I PRESENTED ALL MY FINDINGS THEY CONTACTED BMW NA AND THEY AGREED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ,EXHAUST AND THE DRIVE SHAFT AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO ME. HOWEVER I DID END UP PAYING OVER $4K FOR OTHER OIL LEAKS ETC. NOW THE VEHICLE IS BACK AT THE DEALERS WITH POPPING NOISE VERY HARD JERKING. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION THEY NOW CLAIM THAT THE TRANSFER CASE IS BAD AND IT'LL COST $2700 (FOR THE PART ALONE) AND LABOR TO REPLACE THIS TO FIX THE ISSUE. I LOOKED UP ON LINE AND THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND BMW IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS. SURELY THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT AND THE TRANSMISSION ARE CONNECTED TO THE TRANSFER CASE. SO IF THE DRIVE SHAFT HAS CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION TO GO OUT ONCE THEN THAT MALFUNCTION MUST HAVE DAMAGED THE TRANSFER CASE ALSO OR IF THE INSTALL WAS NOT DONE CORRECTLY THIS COULD HAVE DAMAGED THE TRANSFER CASE. WHICH I BELIEVE BMW SHOULD ADDRESS UNDER THE RECALL FOR FRONT DRIVE SHAFT. WHY IS NO ONE TAKING ANY ACTION ON THIS MATTER. A FAULTY TRANSFER CASE IN THE X5 CAN CAUSE LOSS OF DRIVE AND THIS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATH IF THE OCCUPANTS ARE ON A FREEWAY OR IN AN INTERSECTION ETC WHERE THEY ARE STUCK. WHAT WOULD IT TAKE FOR SOMEONE TO LOOK AT THIS ISSUE AND HOLD THE MANUFACTURERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR SUCH DEFECTIVE AND POOR QUALITY PRODUCTS.PREMIUM DOLLAR FOR THESE CARS DEMANDS PREMIUM SERVICE AND CUSTOMER CARE. CURRENTLY MY CAR SITS IN THE SHOP WITH A REPAIR ESTIMATE OF ALMOST $9K TO REPLACE TURBO HOSES AND TRANSFER CASE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X5. WHILE DRIVING OR IDLING, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL ODOR INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE EGR COOLER FRACTURED, WHICH CAUSED THE EXHAUST ODOR TO ENTER THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. BMW OF STERLING (21710 AUTO WORLD CIR, STERLING, VA 20166, (571) 434-1944) WAS CONTACTED, BUT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE FRACTURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.
IT APPEARS THAT THE BMW X5 35I HAS THIS ISSUE WITH THE TRANSFER CASE ON A HUGE NUMBER OF THE VEHICLES. WHILE THERE IS A RECALL ON SOME VIN #'S I FEEL THAT IT IS IMPERATIVE TO EXTEND IT TO ALL OF THEM. MY X5 HAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS EXPIRED BECAUSE OF MILEAGE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE. THERE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH NOTICE WHEN IT GOES OUT TO PULL OFF THE ROAD SAFELY. WHEN IT HAPPENS IT CAN CERTAINLY CAUSE INJURY AND POSSIBLY DEATH. DOES BMW OR THE NATIONAL SAFETY ADMINISTRATION REALLY WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE ? I THINK NOT ONLY MY VIN # NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED BUT ALL BMW 2011-2012 X5 SHOULD BE INCLUDED. BMW HAS BEEN MADE AWARE THAT THIS IS A DEFECT AND NEEDS TO DO THE RIGHT THING.

TRANSMISSION PROBLEM I HAVE A 2011 BMW X5 XDRIVE35D AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED FOR THE THIRD TIME THAT WHEN I'M ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY WHEN I ACCELERATE TO GO A LITTLE FASTER MY TRANSMISSION GOES INTO A FAILURE MODE TO WHERE I HAVE NO GEARS, AND WHEN I GET THAT MESSAGE I TRY TO ACCELERATE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE SAFELY THE ENGINE JUST REVS REALLY HIGH. I TRY TO PULL OVER TO SAFETY OR TO THE SIDE SO I HAVE TO COAST IT. PRETTY UNSAFE WHEN YOUR WITH FAMILY AND THE LOCAL HIGHWAY HAS A LOT OF TRAFFIC AND SEMI TRUCKS. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A RECALL WITH THE CAR ONLY HAVING 63K AND IT PUTS FAMILIES AND OR INDIVIDUALS AT HARMS WAY OR EVEN RESULTING A BAD COLLISION.
FIRE OCCURRED IN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR (TOP SPEAKER) SHORTLY AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE AND DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE HAD A STRONG ODOR AND SMOKE WAS POURING OUT. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND LOCATED THE SOURCE OF THE SMOKE AND SAW A FLAME. I TOOK A PHOTO OF THE FLAME TO DOCUMENT IT. I SHUT OFF THE RADIO AND THE FLAME AND SMOKE DISSIPATED.
RECENTLY PURCHASED 2011 BMW X5D. VEHICLE HAD 147, 068 MILES. AFTER DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED FOR LESS THAN 100 MILES FROM THE PURCHASE POINT, CEL CAME ON. THE SELLER WAS NOTIFIED ONLY TO TELL ME THAT A SENSOR READING NEEDED TO BE CHECKED AND THE VEHICLE WAS FINE TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE. A WEEK LATER A CERTIFIED BMW MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC READING INDICATED NOX FAULT 4BFO. REDUCING AGENT ACTIVE TANK SENSOR SIGNAL 4BAC. THROTTLE VALVE ACTUATOR 4687. AS WELL AS 3 OTHER FAULTS RELATING TO THESE. ONE OF THESE SENSORS IS IN THE ACTIVE TANK AND COULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH AN MALFUNTION OF EMISSION SYSTEM AND EMISSION VIOLATIONS WHICH COULD RENDER THE MOTOR TO BE DISABLED. BMW CLAIMS THAT NO RECALL ON THE ISSUE HAS BEEN RECORDED. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE TO FIND THAT BMW HAS ANNOUNCED A RECALL ON THE SCR SYSTEM AFFECTING THE DEF MIXER AND THE EGR SYSTEM. ALL OF THESE ISSUES WILL RESULT IN EMISSIONS FAILURE AND SUBSEQUENT ENVIRONMENTAL HARM.
THE PASSENGER RESTRAINT LIGHT IS ON. DEALER REPORTS THERE IS A FAULT STORED FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT MAT. I UNDERSTAND THAT BMW HAS HAD RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM IN PREVIOUS MODEL YEARS.

THIS IN REGARD RECALL NUMBER 16V311000. THE DRIVESHAFT IS COMPROMISED. THE JOINTS ON THE SHAFT ARE ABRAISED AND THE CAR IS BECAMING DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AS THE CLANKING NOISE WILL GET LOUDER. POTENTIAL OF NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE VEHICLE IF NOT FIXED. SYMPTOM: LOUD CLANKING NOISE WHEN TURNING.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND ALLL OF A SUDDEN I RECEIVED AN AUDIBLE AND VISUAL WARNING STATING THAT THE PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED. HELLO, I OWNED THIS BMW WHILE RESIDING ON MAUI, HAWAII. I HAVE NOW SHIPPED THE VEHICLE HOME TO ALBERTA, CANADA AND CANNOT GET IT APPROVED THROUGHOUT THE RIV PROGRAM BECAUSE OF THE AIRBAG RECALL. TAKATA RECALL. I HAS BEEN OVER A YEAR SINCE I HAVE RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE AND BMW IS DOING NOTHING TO FIX MY PROBLEM. I LIVE IN FLORIDA AND HAVE HEARD THAT SALT AIR MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE, SO I WOULD EXPECT PEOPLE LIVING BY THE OCEAN WOULD GET TOP PRIORITY.
THE VEHICLE EMISSION SYSTEM IS CLOGGING UP DUE TO THE DIESEL EMISSIONS SET UP IN THE BMW DIESEL ENGINES. WHERE MOST CAR MANUFACTURERS EMISSION WARRENTIES ARE 80-85KMI BMW IS 70KMI. EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS BMW IS NOT DOING ANYTHING UNLESS YOUR WILLING TO PAY $$$$$$. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SANTA MONICA BMW (1127 SANTA MONICA BLVD, SANTA MONICA, CA 90401 (310) 829-3535) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKET NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND THE COOLANT WAS CONTAMINATED DUE TO FRACTURED COOLANT AND OIL LINES. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE COULD BE OFFERED. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER AND A REDUCED REPAIR PRICE WAS AGREED UPON. THE CONTACT ALSO SPOKE WITH SEVERAL UNKNOWN BMW DEALERS WHO INFORMED HIM THAT MANY OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS HAD THE SAME FAILURE AND IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 45,500.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
NOISE AND VIBRATION COMING FROM DRIVE SHAFT WHEN TURNING AND DRIVING STRAIGHT AHEAD.
WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, I HEARD A LOUD FAN NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I DID A QUICK SYSTEMS CHECK TO SEE IF ALL SYSTEMS WERE OK- THEY WERE. ABOUT 1/10 OF A MILE LATER, MY CAR INDICATED THAT IT WAS OVERHEATING AND THAT I HAD REDUCED POWER. I COULDN'T DRIVE OVER 35 MILES PER HOUR. WITHIN THE NEXT 45 SECONDS, AS I'M GETTING ONTO AN INTERSTATE, MY ENGINE SHUTS OFF COMPLETELY AND I LOSE ALL POWER. I NEVER HAD ANY WARNING AND THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL ENGINE TEMPERATURE ON THIS CAR. AFTER HAVING MY VEHICLE TOWED AND DIAGNOSED BY A CERTIFIED DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT THE THERMOSTAT, WATER PUMP AND EXPANSION TANK ALL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS INFORMED THAT ONE OF THESE ITEMS FAILED AND CAUSED THE OTHER TWO TO BREAK WITH EXTENDED USE. THIS COST ME $1990. THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS FROM HAPPENING. I'VE ALWAYS HAD MY CAR SERVICED AT THE RECOMMENDED INTERVALS.
TAKATA RECALL - IT'S BEEN OVER A YEAR SINCE I RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE. FURTHERMORE THE CAR IS GOING ON 6 YEARS OLD. I LIVE IN A HIGH HUMID REGION. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS IT IS TAKING THIS LONG FOR AN AIRBAG REPLACEMENT.
2011 BMW X5 35I XDRIVE - MY DRIVE SHAFT BROKE (VIOLENT BANGING NOISE FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR) WHILE I WAS GOING 65 MILES PER HOUR ON THE FREEWAY CAUSING ME TO SWERVE TO THE LEFT LANE BACK OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE. SUPER LUCKY THAT I BARELY MISSED HITTING THE CARS NEXT TO ME! I HAD HARDLY ANY CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING WHILE I COASTED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD / DITCH. I LOST ALMOST 7 QUARTS OF OIL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. MY ENGINE HAS A HOLE IN IT FROM THE DRIVE SHAFT. I DID NOT RECEIVE A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL. THE MANUFACTURE WILL BE REPLACING MY ENGINE AND SOME HOSES THAT WERE DESTROYED. THE DEALER SAID THIS WASN'T A RECALL, JUST AN EXTENDED WARRANTY SINCE WE HAVE APPROX. 70,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THE DEALER GAVE US A LOANER CAR TO USE UNTIL OUR CAR IS REPAIRED. MY CONCERN IS THAT OWNERS SHOULD BE NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY! HAD I KNOWN, I WOULD OF HAD MY CAR INSPECTED... NOW I'M OUT $325 DOLLARS FOR TOWING EXPENSES, A CAR THAT MIGHT NOT EVER BE QUITE THE SAME, LIVE 1HR 20 MINUTES FROM THE DEALER, AND THE MEMORY OF THE DRAMATIC EVENT.
VANOS BOLTS, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, ENGINE STALL, COOLANT FUEL PUMP
DROVE MY VEHICLE IN TO THE BMW DEALER FOR COOLANT LEAK/WATER PUMP SERVICE AND OIL CHANGE. THE NEXT DAY THEY INFORM ME THE CAR STALLED DURING A STANDARD TEST DRIVE AFTER THE SERVICE WAS PERFORMED. THE WERE UNABLE TO SPECIFY WHAT CAUSED THE ENGINE TO STALL AND DID NOT RELEASE DIAGNOSTICS TO ME BUT TOLD ME THAT A NEW ENGINE WAS NEEDED. NY STATE DEPT OF VEHICLE FORWARDED A REPORT STATING VANOS FAULTS. THERE ARE CURRENTLY BMW RECALLS FOR ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, ELECTRIC AUXILIARY WATER PUMP FAILURE, AND AN UNSPECIFIED RECALL FOR VANOS BOLTS UNIT THAT LOOSEN OR BREAK OVER TIME CAUSING THE ENGINE TO HAVE REDUCED POWER OR STALL. MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT UNDER THESE RECALLS BUT SHOULD BE.
MY 2011 BMW X5 3.0 SAV WAS EXHIBITING ROUGH STARTS ON IGNITION AND IT STALLED AFTER A WHILE AND WOULDN'T START BACK UP AGAIN. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THE FIRST TIME AND THE VANOS SYSTEM WAS REPLACED( RECALL EXTENDED WARRANTY). THE NEXT TIME IT STALLED AND WOULDN'T START BACK UP WE WERE ADVISED IT WAS THE STARTER SO WE HAD THAT REPLACED( $1163.36) ALONG WITH THE BATTERY( $ 260) AND THEN THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WOULDN'T GO DOWN AND THE DASH BOARD LIGHTING WENT OUT AND THE ALARM WOULDN'T ENGAGE, THE DEALER ADVISED US THAT IT WAS A FOOTWELL MODULE PROBLEM COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY UNTIL 125,000 MILES. ALL IN ALL THE CAR IS RIGGED WITH PROBLEMS. I HAVE DECIDED TO LOOK UP ALL THE NHTSA RECALLS AND HAVE THEM DONE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE BREAKSDOWN. NHTSA HAS THE VEHICLE DOWN FOR BOTH FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS AND ALSO THE IN-TANK FUEL PUMP IN ADDITION TO ALL THE ONES I MENTIONED ABOVE.
I PURCHASED CAR 2011-SOLE OWNER DEALER STATE REPLACES ENGINE PULLEY BOLT 2012? DRIVING IN DARK AND RAIN IN MOUNTAINS NC 1/24/17. ALL OF A SUDDEN LOST ABILITY TO STEER WITHOUT A LOT OF FORCE. THEN GOT DASH ERRORS "CHARGING MALFUNCTION", "ENGINE OVERHEATING" TRANSMISSION FAILURE "NO ABS" "DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY ""TURN OFF ENGINE". I COULD NOT TURN STEERING WHEEL HARD ENOUGH TO GET OFF ROAD. PULLED BARELY TO SIDE AND TURNED ENGINE OFF. COMPLETELY STRANDED AND SCARED TO DEATH. SAME BROKEN BOLT TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS LETHAL SITUATION AND I AM STUCK WITH A KILLER CAR. CANNOT AFFORD TO DUMP IT. THIS CAR HAS REQUIRED TOWING SEVERAL TIMES FOR ENGINE FAILURE THAT WAS "REPAIRED". BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS DONE. IN PRIOR SEPARATE INCIDENT I WAS DRIVING ALONG ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON CAR SPUTTERED AND STOPPED-REQUIRED TOWING. AND TAKATA RECALL ALSO STILL WAITING FOR AIRBAGS SHOOT SHARDS. BMW WILL NOT REPLACE. THEY THINK IT IS NOT HOT IN NC. I CALL 104 DEGREES HOT.
REAR TIRES QUICKLY LOST ALL TREAD LEADING TO DANGEROUS HANDLING. FRONT TIRES OF SAME AGE AND MILEAGE, BUT DIFFERENT SIZE, APPEAR NEW.
I AM REQUESTING AN EMERGENCY RECALL OF MY AUTOMOBILE. WHEN CROSSING THE GANDY BRIDGE OVER TAMPA BAY IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, MY CAR EMITTED A VERY LOUD BANG AND A RAPID SERIES OF SHAKING AND EXTREMELY HARD KNOCKS. THE CAR LOST POWER, SMOKE BILLOWED OUT THE BACK AND I SAW A STREAM OF OIL IN THE MIRROR BEHIND ME. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OUT OF THE TRAFFIC LANE. THE PROBLEM, I HAVE FOUND, WAS THAT THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT FAILED DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN THE UNIVERSAL JOINT. WHEN IT FAILED, THE SPINNING PARTS CRACKED OPEN THE TRANSMISSION CASE, THE OIL PAN AND BROKE SEVERAL NEARBY PARTS. THE EVENT OCCURRED ON A LONG BRIDGE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY. THE FRONT END OF THE SPINNING DRIVE SHAFT BROKE LOOSE AND FELL DOWN, PARTS WERE EJECTED ONTO THE HIGHWAY, THE TRANSMISSION WAS CRACKED OPEN AND ALL TRANSMISSION OIL DISCHARGED ONTO THE BRIDGE. HAD THIS OCCURRED, FOR EXAMPLE, WHILE PASSING ANOTHER CAR ON A TWO LANE ROAD, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS, PERHAPS FATAL ACCIDENT. THIS VEHICLE, FROM PRODUCTION DATES BEGINNING APRIL 5 2011, WAS OFFICIALLY RECALLED IN MAY 2016 FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN MARCH, 2011, A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THE APPARENTLY ARBITRARY RECALL DATE OF APRIL 5. I NOW FIND THERE HAVE BEEN MANY SIMILAR FAILURES, WITH PHOTOS AND DESCRIPTIONS EXACTLY LIKE MINE. THE BMW RECALL NOTICE, WHICH I DID NOT RECEIVE BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED, STATES THAT A VIBRATION WILL BECOME NOTICEABLE, AND, IF IT FAILS, POWER TO THE FRONT WHEELS WILL BE INTERRUPTED, BUT THAT THE REAR WHEELS WILL CONTINUE TO WORK. JANUARY 13, 2017, I WAS DRIVING MY 2011 BMW X5, WITH APPROXIMATELY 77,000 MILES, ON A TWO-LANE ROAD AND I ACCELERATED TO PASS A TRUCK. WHILE GOING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH MY X5 UNEXPECTEDLY AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. THE ENGINE WOULD ONLY REV WHEN I PUSHED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS WAS WITHOUT ANY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR NOISE INDICATING CATASTROPHIC MECHANICAL FAILURE. THANKFULLY, I HAD ENOUGH SPEED TO COMPLETE MY PASS BEFORE THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC REACHED ME AND WE AVOIDED A POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS COLLISION. I COASTED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD HOPING TO BE ABLE TO SHIFT BACK INTO DRIVE. MOVEMENT OF THE SHIFTER DID NOTHING AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN AT IDLE SPEED. WHEN I TRIED TO RESTART THE X5, NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD WERE STILL WORKING AND THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF ANY WARNING INDICATORS. THE TOWNE BMW SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $20,000. THE VEHICLE HAD AN ESTIMATED TRADE-IN VALUE $14,000! THIS OUTCOME IS AFTER I PROPERLY MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE FOR 6 YEARS, HAVING ALL OIL CHANGES DONE WITHIN THE MANUFACTURES SUGGESTED SERVICE INTERVALS. AND SPENT OVER $6,000 WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. MOST RECENT OIL CHANGE WAS DONE AT ON NOVEMBER 15, 2016. I EVEN HAD THE OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKETS REPLACED AT A COST OF $572 BASED ON THE TECHNICIAN'S RECOMMENDATION. IT IS UNFATHOMABLE TO ME AND OTHER PRO MECHANICS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED SUCH A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. DEALER CALLED FEB. 9, 2017, ALMOST ONE MONTH AFTER MY TROUBLE BEGAN, TO EXPLAIN THAT THE #6 CAM SHAFT BEARING FAILED AND SEIZED ONTO THE CONNECTING ROD. I ASKED WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH A FAILURE AND THEY SAID IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO LACK OF OIL OR DIRT IN THE OIL. NEITHER COULD EXPLAIN HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN WITH ROUTINE OIL CHANGES AND MOST RECENT BEING ONLY TWO MONTHS PRIOR.
I AM HEARING A BUZZING SOUND FROM THE CENTER OF MY STEERING WHEEL WHEN I PARK MY X5 AND THE SOUND SEEMS TO CONTINUE AFTER I SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE. MY X5 HAS AN AIRBAG RECALL OUTSTANDING FOR ALMOST A FULL YEAR, BUT MY DEALER HAS OFFERED NEITHER REPLACEMENT NOR ANY EXPLANATION FOR THE DELAY.
