TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. A CHIME SOUNDED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE "POWER STEERING" WARNING LIGHT INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IMMEDIATELY, THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE DRIVER EXERTED EXTREME DIFFICULTY TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. CURRENTLY, THE VEHICLE IS AT AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 122,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I WAS JUST PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED ONCE AND IT BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER THE CAR AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AND I HAVE NOT HAD THE PROBLEM SINCE

HAVE 2006 CHEVY COBALT, HAVE A POWER STEERING PROBLEM HAVE HEARD THAT THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS. IT LOCKS THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE YOUR DRIVING, HAS FAILED ON ME AND HAS ALMOST CAUSED ME TOO LOSE CONTROL, HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT YET, BUT WOULD NOT LIKE TO EXPERIENCE THIS, OR SOMETHING WORST. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT AND MY 18 YR SON WAS DRIVING AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND THE MESSAGE INSIDE THE CAR CAME ON. THE VEHICLE BECAME VERY HARD TO DRIVE AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR. WHEN I GOT HOME I RESTARTED THE CAR BUT AFTER 2 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE SAME THING HAPPENED. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR HIM AND I HEAR CAN COST UP TO 2000.00 TO FIX. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE.
JUST BOUGHT MY COBALT AT USED DEALERSHIP AND I HAVE ISSUES WITH THE POWER STEERING. IT FEELS REALLY HARD TO TURN AND IT MAKES NOISES THAT JUST DON'T SOUND RIGHT. EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, MY CAR'S POWER STEERING WILL GO OUT. I AM DRIVING A 2006 CHEVY COBALT. IF I TURN THE CAR OFF, THEN RESTART, IT WILL WORK FOR A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME AND THEN RETURN TO DOING THE SAME THING. THIS CAUSES A GREAT AMOUNT OF FEAR, ESPECIALLY IF IT HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHENEVER THE CONTACT DRIVES THE VEHICLE AT ANY SPEED SHE NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING WILL SUDDENLY STOP FUNCTIONING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE POWER STEERING MECHANISM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS .THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 54000.
DURING NORMAL DRIVING ALERT TONE SOUNDS, DIC SAYS "POWER STEERING" AND POWER ASSIST IS LOST. VEHICLE BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. IF I PULL OVER, TURN ENGINE OFF THEN RESTART, THE PROBLEM CLEARS UP, HOWEVER, IT WILL RE-OCCUR WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. PROBLEM HAPPENING WITH GREATER FREQUENCY DURING LAST TWO WEEKS, NOW HAPPENS EVERY TEN MINUTES OR LESS. I DRIVE MOSTLY ON CITY STREETS. PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED TOO MANY TIMES TO COUNT IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS, AT LEAST 30 TIMES IN 5 HOURS OF DRIVING. YESTERDAY PROBLEM OCCURRED 5 TIMES IN 15 MINUTES. VERY DANGEROUS. *TR

THE POWER STEERING IN THE COBALT JUST FAILS. FIRST TIME IN THE PARKING LOT OF A JEWEL WITH LOTS OF PEOPLE IN THE LOT BARELY ABLE TO TURN WHEEL TO PARK. TURN CAR OFF AND BACK ON THE POWER STEERING COMES BACK ON. 2ND TIME I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY ON A TRIP 1.5 HOURS INTO TRIP THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD TO DRIVE OFF THE ROAD. RESTARTED THE CAR AND ABOUT 10 MINUTES INTO TRIP POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND I DROVE WITHOUT IT FOR THE REMAINING HOUR. ONE THE RETURN TRIP THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN ON THE HIGHWAY AFTER 1.0 HOURS OF DRIVING AT A CONSISTENT SPEED.
I WAS DRIVING HOME ON FEBRUARY 05, 2010 WHEN MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND I DID NOT HAVE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS COMING TO A STOP FORTUNATELY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SITUATION. A FRIEND TOLD ME CHEVY COBALT HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND I BEGAN MY SEARCH ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, MY FUEL PUMP MODULE HAD A SMALL CRACK IN IT DISBURSING GASOLINE. THE MECHANIC WHO WORKED ON IT SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING SUCH AS THIS BEFORE. IM LUCKY I WAS NOT DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED OR AROUND A CORNER WHEN MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP OR MY CAR DIDN'T EXPLODE INTO FLAMES FROM THE GASOLINE DISBURSING THROUGHOUT MY CAR WHEN I HAD TO REPLACE MY FUEL PUMP. POWER STEERING AND FUEL PUMPS SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REGULAR MAINTENANCE. CHEVY BARELY ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM AND SAY ITS NOT BIG DEAL, TRY YOUR BEST TO CONTROL YOUR CAR WHEN YOUR POWER STEERING GOES OUT. I'VE HEARD THIS BECOMES A REGULAR OCCURRENCE AFTER THE FIRST TIME. *TR

I OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT WITH A LITTLE OVER 62,000 MILES. I BOUGHT IT USED AND HAVE HAD IT A YEAR AND THREE MONTHS. EVER SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR I'VE HAD ISSUES W/THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING. IT ACTS UP ON A DAILY BASIS. THE POWER STEERING CUTS ON AND OFF WHILE I'M DRIVING THE CAR. IT MAKES IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER THE CAR AT ALL. MY ARMS ACHE AT THE END OF THE DAY FROM STRUGGLING TO STEER AND KEEP CONTROL OF MY CAR. IT IS ESPECIALLY SCARY WHEN YOU ARE ON A SHARP EXIT RAMP AND THE POWER STEERING ISN'T WORKING AND THEN CUTS ON. I'VE COME VERY CLOSE TO LOSING CONTROL OF MY CAR MANY TIMES. I'VE LOOKED INTO HAVING IT REPLACED BUT THE COST OF THE PARTS AND LABOR ARE EXPENSIVE AND BEING A SINGLE MOTHER OF TWO I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE IT REPLACED. I'VE SEEN COUNTLESS NUMBERS OF WEBSITES AND COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET OF OTHER COBALT OWNERS W/THE SAME POWER STEERING ISSUE. IT'S RIDICULOUS THAT GM WON'T DO A RECALL! THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT AND GM NEEDS TO FIX IT BEFORE SOMEONE LOSES THEIR LIFE! THIS IS MY FIRST GM VEHICLE AND I CAN GUARANTEE IT WILL BE MY LAST! *TR

I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN A ROAD WHEN MY POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING. I WENT BACK TO MY APARTMENT BEFORE TAKING IT ANYWHERE. I TURNED OFF MY CAR AND WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON THE POWER STEERING WAS BACK. AFTER DRIVING TO THE CAR GARAGE LESS THAN A MILE DOWN THE ROAD THE POWER STEERING WENT AGAIN. I HAD AN OIL CHANGE AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO STEERING FLUID IN MY TYPE OF CAR THAT IT WAS ALL COMPUTERIZED AND TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. I DROVE ACROSS THE STREET TO THE DEALER WHEN THE POWER STEERING WOULD LAST ABOUT 3 MINUTES AND STOP CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO PULL OVER START MY CAR AND DRIVE AGAIN. IT STOPPED WORKING TWICE WHILE WAITING AT A LIGHT TO TURN INTO THE DEALER. THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOUND THAT MY ELECTRONIC STEERING MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THAT MY POWER STEERING WOULD STOP WORKING ALL TOGETHER IN THE NEAR FUTURE IF I DIDN'T. *TR
MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT, NEAR 58,000 MILES, RECENTLY HAD THE POWER STEERING GO OUT ON IT. WHILE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY BECAME TIGHT AND DIFFICULT TO TURN. I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW "POWER STEERING" DISPLAYED ON THE DISPLAY. I WAS ABLE TO STEER IT HOME AND IMMEDIATELY BEGAN MY ONLINE RESEARCH. I READ THAT OFTEN TIMES TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON WILL "RESET" IT. I WENT OUT AND TRIED IT AND IT WORKED. UNFORTUNATELY, IT ONLY LASTED ABOUT 10 MINUTES BEFORE I GOT THE MESSAGE AGAIN AND THE POWER STEERING CLICKED OFF. LUCKILY THERE IS A BIT OF A WARNING RIGHT BEFORE IT GOES OUT, YOU CAN HEAR A CLICK AND THEN 3 DINGS AND THEN IT LOCKS UP. IT HAS BEEN A WEEK NOW SINCE I FIRST STARTED HAVING THE ISSUE AND IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE WITH EACH DAY OF DRIVING, GOING FROM LASTING 10 MINUTES BEFORE FAILURE, TO LASTING ONLY 15-30 SECONDS. AFTER THE 3RD DAY I FINALLY GAVE UP ON IT AND BEGAN DRIVING MY OLDER MUCH MORE RELIABLE, DEPENDABLE CHEVY CAVALIER. TODAY I AM TAKING THE COBALT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. I WAS QUOTED A PRICE BETWEEN $450-$600 TO REPAIR. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GM AS WELL. THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND HE SEES AT LEAST ONE IN PER MONTH WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS NOT VERY SAFE AND IS OBVIOUSLY A MAJOR ISSUE. I AM LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE CAR WHEN THE STEERING GOES OUT, BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE WITH DISABILITIES OR THE ONES WHO LACK THE UPPER BODY STRENGTH? THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED WITH GM BEFORE THEY HAVE A MUCH MORE FATAL ISSUE ON THEIR HANDS. THE CHEVY COBALT IS BY FAR THE WORSE VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED WITH ALL IT'S ISSUES AND I HAVE LOST COMPLETE FAITH IN THE CHEVY NAME BECAUSE OF IT. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN I EXITED THE FREEWAY MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND DID NOT COME BACK UNTIL I TURNED OFF MY CAR AND RESTARTED IT. THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT HAS FAILED 3 TIMES IN THE PAST 2 WEEKS. THE FIRST 2 TIMES, I WAS JUST PULLING INTO MY DRIVEWAY AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 60 MILES WHEN THE STEERING FAILED. THE CAR CHIMED, THE DASHBOARD DISPLAY READ "POWER STEERING," AND THE CAR INSTANTLY BECAME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. BOTH TIMES, THE FAILURE OCCURRED JUST AFTER OR DURING A SHARP TURN AFTER A LONG DRIVE. THE MOST RECENT FAILURE, TODAY, HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE, AT LOW SPEED, AFTER ONLY 20 MILES OF DRIVING. WHEN THE CAR IS RESTARTED, THE STEERING BECOMES FULLY FUNCTIONAL AGAIN. HOWEVER, I AM WORRIED THAT IT WILL FAIL AGAIN AT A CRITICAL MOMENT. I CANNOT PREDICT WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN NEXT. *TR
ON FEB 3,2010 MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT LOST POWER STEERING. I HAVE 50,000 MILES ON THE CAR. I LOST CONTROL AND VEERED OFF INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC BUT TRIED TO CORRECT AND ENDED IN THE DITCH. THANK GOD I DID NOT GET IN A WRECK. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND THEN TURNED IT BACK ON AND THE POWER STEERING CAME BACK ON. IT GOES OUT OFTEN SINCE THEN. 6 MONTHS AGO THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT STOP WORKING. CAR WAS OVER WARRANTY & TOOK IT TO RAY PRICE CHEVY DEALERSHIP, MT POCONO PA. CHARGED ME $907.00 TO REPAIR THE POWER STEERING COLUMN AND BOX (ELECTRIC). CAR DID NOT APPEAR TO BE HANDLING AS PRIOR TO FAILURE & REPLACEMENT. TOOK CAR BACK SEVERAL TIMES AND SVC MGR WOULD NOT LOOK AT IT. SAID THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO. I CONTINUED TO USE THE CAR WITH SLIGHTLY IRREGULAR POWER STEERING. ON 2/3/2010 I WAS GOING TO WORK ON LIGHTLY SNOW COVERED RD WHICH I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 26 YRS. I HAD THE CAR IN LOW GEAR AND HAD SNOW TIRES ON THE CAR. I DROVE AROUND DOWNHILL WINDING ROAD AND COULD NOT BRING THE CAR'S STEERING BACK UNDER CONTROL. I HIT A FEW TREES JUST MISSING AN ENBACKMENT. I SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AT THE TIME & DID NOT GO TO THE HOSPITAL. I CALLED THE POLICE. THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVEABLE AND TOWED TO D'AMCIO AUTOBODY SHOP, SCOTRUN, PA. THE BODY WORK TOOK 28 DAYS TO COMPLETE. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR ON 3/2/2010, MR. D'AMICO TOLD ME THE POWER STEERING WAS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY & THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. GREG SMITH INS APPRIASER AGREED WITH MR. D'AMICO AND SAID THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO INTERNAL DAMAGE TO THE CAR CAUSING THE POWER STEERING NOW TO BE BROKEN. I HEARD SEVEAL TIMES ON NEWS THAT GE WAS RECALLING 2005 -2010 CHEVY COBALTS DUE TO POWER STEERING FAILURE. I CALLED GE CORPORATE CUSTOMER SVC DEPT AND THEY GAVE ME A INCIDENT #. THEY CALLED ME AND I CALLED THEM SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY DID NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHEN CAR WOULD BE CHECKED. THEY SAID THEY HAD PAST MY INFO ON. WHEN I ASKED TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE IT THE DEPT THAT NOW HAD MY INCIDIENT THEY WOULD NOT GIVE THE NAME OF PERSON. I HAVE NO CAR TO DRIVE TO WORK & GE WILL NO OFFER A SOLUTION. GE SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL MONIES PAST & PRESENT RELATED TO POWER STEERING INCIDENTS AND ACCIDENT. GE SHOULD LOAN ME A USED CAR FROM A DEALERSHIP UNTIL THEY FIX CAR & BUY BACK CAR. IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT ONLY AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING AND EACH TIME THE CAR IS DRIVEN. ONE CAR REPAIR SHOP QUOTED A PRICE OF OVER $1000.00 FOR THE PART TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. I HAVE CONCERNS FOR MY SAFETY, BUT THIS IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AND AM WAITING TO SAVE THE MONEY FOR REPAIRS. MEANTIME I DRIVE IN WET, ICY CONDITIONS AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED. *TR

ABOUT 2 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT (OR AS OF APPROX 2 WEEKS AGO) THE VEHICLE'S POWER STEERING BEGAN TO RANDOM SHUT OFF. THE POWER STEERING IS AVAILABLE EVERY TIME THE CAR IS STARTED BUT IS ALWAYS DISABLE AFTER 1-2 MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD AND STAYS THAT WAY UNTIL THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, ALTHOUGH AT THAT POINT IT LAST 1-2 MINUTES AGAIN AND SO THE CYCLE CONTINUES. THE CONSEQUENCES AS OF YET ARE SIMPLY THE BOTHER AND DIFFICULTY WITH 'WINDING ROADS' AND PARKING LOTS. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT SS. BACK IN JANUARY I HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE I WAS DRIVING AND THE MESSAGE CENTER ON THE DASH DISPLAYED "POWER STEERING." ONCE THAT APPEARED AND CHIMED, I LOST MOST MANUEVERABILITY OF MY VEHICLE AND IT BECAME HARD TO STEER. ONCE I GOT TO MY DESTINATION, I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND BACK ON, AND NOTICED THAT THE PROBLEM DID NOT REPLICATE. AT THE TIME, MY COBALT HAD APPROXIMATELY 78,650 MILES. SINCE THEN, I HAD NOT HAD ANY OCCURRENCE UNTIL 2/1/10. SINCE 2/1/10, THE PROBLEM OCCURS EVERY DAY. IT SEEMS TO OCCUR AFTER APPROXIMATELY 40-50 MINUTES OF DRIVING AND THEN MY POWER STEERING KICKS OUT. TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON WILL CORRECT THE PROBLEM, BUT WITHIN 5 MINUTES THE "POWER STEERING" MESSAGE REAPPEARS. THE ENGINE HAS TO COOL DOWN FOR THE LENGTH OF DRIVING TIME TO INCREASE. I DRIVE A 44 MILE COMMUTE DAILY ONE WAY, AND EXPERIENCE THIS EVERY DAY; SEEING THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE EXPERIENCING THIS, IT POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK ESPECIALLY WHEN MOST OF MY COMMUTE IS HIGHWAY DRIVING. I'VE HAD IT KICK OUT WHEN I'M ON AN EXPRESSWAY EXIT RAMP ALMOST UNABLE TO CONTINUE MY TURN AROUND THE CORNER. I USED TO WORK FOR UPS AND DROVE THEIR TRUCKS; THEIR PACKAGE CARS DON'T HAVE POWER STEERING AND I KNOW HOW THE LACK OF POWER STEERING FEELS; THIS IS NOTHING IN COMPARISON. JUST HAVING A MAJOR SNOW STORM HERE IN THE MIDWEST, IT POSES ADDITIONAL SAFETY CONCERNS TRYING TO MANEUVER ON SNOW COVERED PAVEMENT. I READ THAT YOU ARE INVESTIGATING THE LOST OF POWER STEERING IN CHEVY COBALTS, AND WE HAD AN INCIDENT THIS LAST WEEKEND. MY SON WAS PRACTICING PARALLEL PARKING IN FRONT OF OUR CONDO, AND THE VEHICLE LOST THE POWER STEERING. IT ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING VERY SLOW, SINCE HE WAS NOT MOVING FAST TO DO THE PARKING, BUT IF YOU PULLED BACK OUT INTO THE ROAD, AND ACCELERATED, THE POWER ASSIST TO THE STEERING CAME BACK. 2006 CHEVY COBALT WITH ONGOING POWER STEERING FAILURE ISSUES. DURING THE NORMAL COURSE OF DRIVING, THE WORDS "POWER STEERING" WILL COME UP ON THE ODOMETER AND THE POWER STEERING WILL STOP WORKING. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO PULL OVER AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE, WHICH SEEMS TO "RESET" AND TEMPORARILY FIXES THE PROBLEM. I LATER TOOK TO DEALER TO HAVE THEM CHECK IT OUT AND THEY SAID I WILL NEED A NEW POWER STEERING COLUMN AND ELECTRIC MOTOR. DEALER SAID IT WILL BE A $1100 FIX.
