TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WOULD FLASH ON THE DASHBOARD AND THEN THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ONCE EVERY 2 TO 3 DAYS. SHE HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER OR TALKED TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 41,088. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,688.
I OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT. AT 25,000 MILES THE POWER STEERING JUST STOP WORKING WHILE I'M ON THE HIGHWAY. IT WAS VERY HARD TO STEER, BUT I MANAGED TO PULL OVER TO THE CURVE AND STOP THE CAR. FORTUNATELY NO ONE GOT HURT. I DON'T KNOW WHY IT HAPPENED BUT IT SURE WAS SCARY. AFTER A FEW MINUTES I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND THE POWER STEERING CAME BACK ON AGAIN. BEFORE I COULD REACH HOME, THE POWER STEERING FAILED AGAIN. OBVIOUSLY, THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG. I CALLED A MECHANIC FOR AN ESTIMATE AND THEY SAID IT WOULD COST AROUND $1000 TO 1500 INCLUDING LABOR.*CW
POWER STEERING PROBLEM ON A 2006 CHEVY COBALT MY POWER STEERING KEEPS GOING OUT AND A POWER STEERING LIGHT WILL SHOW UP ON MY INFORMATION SCREEN. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE JAN 5TH AND I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR ON THE 21ST OF DEC. *TR
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A CHEVY COBALT 2006 AND FOUR MONTHS LATER THE POWER STEERING WENT OFF. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND IT IS VERY COSTLY TO REPAIR. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE SEREN MANY CASES LIKE THIS ON COBALTS. MINE HAS 59K AND HAS NO WARRANTY. THE DAY THAT THE INCIDENT HAPPENED MY MOTHER WAS DRIVING IT AND ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT. SHE IS A 60 YR OLD LADY AND DOES NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO BE MANEUVERING A HARD STEERING WHEEL. *TR
POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING ON 1/28/10, AS I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN ON 2/1/10, AND THEN STOPPED AND THEN STARTED AGAIN. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID THAT THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. A CHIME SENSOR SOUNDED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE "POWER STEERING" WARNING LIGHT INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IMMEDIATELY, THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE DRIVER PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RE-OCCURRED DURING THE TRAVEL. THE FAILURES OCCURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000.
AS I WAS DRIVING TO WORK MY POWER STEERING LIGHT IN MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT CAME ON AND IT GOT REALLY HARD TO STEER. AS I TRIED TO GET THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I HAD TO CROSS OVER INTO THE RIGHT HAND LANE AND THEN ONTO THE SHOULDER. SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE RIGHT LANE AND THE CONCRETE BARRIER THE POWER STEERING KICKED BACK IN, SEEMS HOW I HAD THE WHEEL TURNED SO SHARPLY TOWARD THE SHOULDER I NEARLY HIT THE CONCRETE BARRIER. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND FROM WHAT RESEARCH I HAVE DONE THIS IS QUITE COMMON. IF THEY THINK IT MAY BE IN OVER 900,000 CARS, YOU WOULD THINK A COMPANY LIKE GM (THAT HAS HAD ENOUGH PROBLEMS WITH DEBT AND IN THE PUBLIC EYE)WOULD TAKE CARE OF THIS. THIS IS GOING TO TURN INTO A PROBLEM LIKE TOYOTA. ITS NOT A CHEAP FIX THE DEALER SAID 2 HOURS OF WORK FOR WHAT COULD COST ME UP TO $3000. THIS CAR IS ALMOST 5 YEARS OLD. THE CAR IS BARELY WORTH $5500. MINE IS SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY, I REFUSE TO DRIVE IT WITH A 2 YEAR OLD. THIS STUBBORN ATTITUDE THAT GM HAS IS VERY SAD DUE TO THE FACT THAT MANY PEOPLE THAT HAVE COBALTS FROM THE YEARS INDICATED WOULD BE UPGRADING TO OTHER VEHICLES, TOO BAD THEY WONT BE ANYTHING MADE BY GM. *TR
2006 CHEVY COBALT POWER STEERING FAILURE, NOW OCCURS EVERY 100 MILES. IS OKAY AFTER CAR RE-STARTS, THEN FAILS AGAIN A FEW MINUTES LATER. *CN
I OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT SS. MY KEY OFTEN GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION, TAKING QUITE SOME TIME TO FIDDLE WITH TO GET OUT. AS WELL, AND A MUCH MORE SERIOUS COMPLAINT, IS THE FAILURE OF MY POWER STEERING. MY POWER STEERING LIGHT HAS COME ON QUITE OFTEN IN THE PAST 2 WEEKS. TURNING THE CAR ON AND OFF TAKES THE LIGHT AWAY. HOWEVER, TODAY WHILE TAKING A TURN AT A GREEN LIGHT, MY POWER STEERING LITERALLY FAILED ON ME. THIS IS NOT SAFE, AND AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, I HAVE LEARNED ITS A COMMON DEFECT OF 2005-2009 CHEVY COBALTS. *TR
AS I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD MY CHEVY COBALT WILL DING ABOUT THREE TIMES AND IN THE MILEAGE WINDOW IT WILL FLASH "POWER STEERING". AS SOON AS THAT OCCURS THE POWER STEERING WILL GO OUT ENTIRELY. IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET THE CAR TO MOVE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SO THERE IS NO WAY TO COMPLETELY TURN IT. I ALMOST RAN INTO A FENCE TRYING TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT FIRST OCCURED THE AFTERNOON OF THE 26TH AND THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVEN THE REST OF THE DAY, BUT IT AGAIN HAPPENED THE MORNING OF THE 27TH. AN APPOINTMENT HAS BEEN MADE FOR TOMORROW TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT BY CHEVY SO THERE HAS BEEN NO CORRECTION TO THE PROBLEM. *CN
2006 CHEVROLET COBALT WHILE DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS HAD SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WITH ALARM AND WARNING ON DASH. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO SIDE OF ROAD SHUT OFF AND ENGINE AND RESTART. NO PROBLEM AFTER RESTARTING VEHICLE. SINCE FIRST OCCURRENCE IT NOW HAPPENS MULTIPLE TIMES DAILY. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN SHAKING UNCONTROLLABLY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME SAFELY WITHOUT ANY POWER STEERING. THE CONTACT HAS CALLED THE MANUFACTURER REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE RISK INVOLVED WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILURE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000.
CHEVY COBALT POWER STEERING LOCKING UP AND HAS TO BE TURNED OFF BEFORE IT WILL WORK AGAIN. *TR
I BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR MY DAUGHTER AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT ON IT. SHE HAD TROUBLE HOLDING IT IN THE ROAD. I HAVE READ ON THE INTERNET THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM IN ALL THESE COBALTS. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND I THINK CHEVROLET SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS I'M HAVING WITH THIS CAR. *TR
I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY STEERING ON MY 06 COBALT SINCE I HAVE BOUGHT IT. IT SEEMS TO GET STUCK WHEN TURNING THE STEERING VEHICLE TO THE LEFT. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER BUT WAS ALWAYS TOLD THEY DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. AT THIS TIME THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY MAJOR PROBLEM LIKE A CRASH BUT IT STILL CONCERNS ME AND I KNOW IT SHOULD NOT OPERATE LIKE THIS. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION AND STILL NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE MAKING A LANE CHANGE FOLLOWED BY TOTAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING. *TR
THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT UNEXPECTEDLY WHEN I WAS ON THE ROAD AND THE WHEEL BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. I START THE IGNITION AND AS SOON AS I TAKE OFF IT GOES OUT. BECOMING VERY HARD TO DRIVE AROUND AND MAKES IT VERY HAZARDOUS ON TIGHT CORNERS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. SHE STATES THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND SHE LOST THE POWER STEERING ON THE VEHICLE. SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER WHERE SHE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN ON AND THE VEHICLE WAS FINE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME BACK ON . THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY STATED THAT THEY WILL REPAIR THE FAILURE AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPAIRS FOR THE FAILURE. SHE HAS NOTICED THAT WHENEVER THE TEMPERATURE DROPS OR WHEN IT RAINS THAT'S WHEN SHE LOSES POWER STEERING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42200 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42424.
WITHOUT WARNING THE MESSAGE SCREEN NEXT TO THE SPEEDOMETER READ "POWER STEERING" AND THE WHEEL BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO MOVE. MEANWHILE, THE CAR WAS STILL DRIVING MOTION, BUT THE DIRECTION OF THE WHEELS WAS NEARLY INALTERABLE. THE ONLY REMEDY IS TO BRING THE CAR TO A COMPLETE STOP, TURN OFF THE ENGINE, AND RESTART IT. THIS CAN BE VERY HAZARDOUS IN TRAFFIC, AS WELL AS IN AREAS OF LIMITED DRIVING SPACE. THIS HAS OCCURRED IN MY VEHICLE 18 TIMES IN THE PAST 13 DAYS. DURING ONE OCCURRENCE, NEARBY POLICE OFFICERS TOOK NOTICE OF MY STRUGGLE AND CAME OVER TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF FUEL LEAKAGE WAS ON THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V419000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE DELIVERY, FUEL PUMP). THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE IDENTICAL FAILURES AS MENTION IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE RECALL DEFECT. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 116,000.
OUT OF NOWHERE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY "POWER STEERING" APPEARS ON MY DISPLAY AND THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON THE POWER STEERING WAS FINE AND THEN AFTER LESS THAN 2 MINUTES THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH CHEVY COBALTS. ESTIMATED PRICE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS $2000.00. THERE IS NOW REASON THIS SHOULDN'T BE A RECALL WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY OWNERS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. THIS SYSTEM FAILURE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE AND FAST. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE 2006 CHEVY COBALT INTO NEW YORK CITY (FROM PENNSYLVANIA) THE POWER STEERING "DIED." THE CAR ONLY HAS 28,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN DRIVEN "DELICATELY" SINCE PURCHASED. *** ALSO NOTE THAT THE ENTIRE COMPUTER SYSTEM DIED LAST SPRING (SPRING 2009) AND CHEVY REFUSED TO HELP IN COMPENSATING OF THE 1200 DOLLAR BILL WE HAD - CLAIMING WE DIDN'T HAVE THE ORIGINAL PART THAT MALFUNCTIONED. THEY DID NOT WANT TO HEAR THAT NO GARAGE IN 2009 GIVES YOU THE "DEFUNCT" PART OF THE CAR. WE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH CHEVY'S MAIN OFFICES AND GOTTEN NO WHERE SINCE THE COMPUTER FRIED ITSELF LAST SPRING. SINCE THE POWER STEERING DIED 2 WEEKS AGO, THEY ABSOLUTELY WON'T HEAR OF IT AND WILL NOT HELP WHATSOEVER. FOR A CAR WITH ONLY 28000 MILES ON IT, AND HAVE THE COMPUTER SYSTEM OF THE CAR DIE AS WELL AS THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM - SOMETHING IS BEING COVERED UP ON THEIR PART. - ESPECIALLY SINCE THE DEALER WE BOUGHT THE CAR FROM (MAUREEN ALEXANDER CHEVROLET IN WILKES-BARRE PA) HAS CLOSED DUE TO THEIR "REORGANIZATION OF GM". *TR

MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 40 EAST IN NORTH CAROLINA CAR WAS HIT FROM BEHIND CAR WENT ACROSS SEVERAL LANES OF TRAFFIC AND HIT RAIL STEERING OVER COMPENSATED AND AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY CAR WAS TOWED AND WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS. *TR
WE LOST THE POWER STEERING ON OUR CAR TWICE. THE FIRST TIME, WAS WHEN WE WERE TURNING AROUND. THE SECOND, WAS ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 70 MILES AN HOUR. AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT, WE HAD THE POWER STEERING MOTOR REPLACED. THEY INSTALLED A MOTOR KIT, PART NUMBER 1 20763801. WE DO NOT HAVE THE OLD PARTS. *TR

I HAVE A 06 CHEVY COBALT. I WAS EXITING A BUSY HIGHWAY WHEN MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I ABOUT GOT HIT BY ANOTHER CAR BECAUSE I COULD NOT GET THE WHEEL TO TURN. THE POWERSTEERING ON MY CAR GOES OUT AT LEAST ONCE A DAY, BUT ON AN AVERAGE DAY ABOUT 2-3 TIMES. TODAY I WAS DRIVING FROM WICHITA, KS BACK HOME TO TULSA, OK AND MY POWERSTEERING WENT OUT 4 TIMES WITHIN A MATTER OF 10 MINS. THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN WHEN I'M TURNING A SHARP CORNER AND MY TWO SMALL CHILDREN ARE IN THE CAR. I AM A VERY SMALL WOMAN AND CAN'T TURN THE WHEEL WHEN THE POWERSTEERING GOES OUT. THE ONLY WAY I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS TO PULL OVER, TURN OFF THE CAR, THEN RESTART THE CAR AFTER WAITING FOR AT LEAST A MINUTE. USUALLY, I HAVE TO TRY ABOUT 3 TIMES TO GET THE POWERSTEERING TO WORK AGAIN AND IT DOESN'T WORK FOR VERY LONG. HIGHWAYS IN TULSA, OK HAVE VERY SHARP AND NARROW EXITS AND IT IS SCARY WHEN I DON'T KNOW IF I'M GOING TO BE ABLE TO SAFELY EXIT BECAUSE I CAN'T TURN THE WHEEL OF MY CAR. *TR
2006 CHEVROLET COBALT POWER STEERING FREQUENTLY GOES OUT. THE WARNING CODE STATES POWER STEERING FAILURE, AT THIS TIME ALL POWER STEERING IS LOST. WE TOOK THE CAR TO GM SERVICE AND THEY SAID THEIR DIAGNOSTIC TEST SHOW NO PROBLEMS, SO THEY REFUSE TO WORK ON THE CAR. CAR IS NOW PARK, BECAUSE WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. CAR ONLY HAVE 22,169 MILES ON IT. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT, AT THE END OF AUGUST 09. SINCE THEN, IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR KNOCKING SOUNDS IN THE FRONT END THAT ALTERED THE BRAKE FROM FUNCTIONING PROPERLY OVER 4 TIMES. THE DEALER COULD NOT ALWAYS REPLICATE IT, THEREFORE IT WAS NOT FIXED. EVENTUALLY THE NOISE STOPPED, THEN A FEW MONTHS AGO THE KEY GOT STUCK IN THE IGNITION SEVERAL TIMES, AND FINALLY THE SHIFTER HAD TO BE REPLACED. AT THIS POINT I HAVEN'T EVEN OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR 5 MONTHS, AND NOW A FEW DAYS AGO THE POWER STEERING SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. I PULLED OVER THE BEST I COULD SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED IT. EVERYTHING RESET AND IT WAS FINE. YESTERDAY THE EVENT OCCURRED ON AN EXIT RAMP OF A HIGH WAY AND NEARLY KILLED ME. ONCE AGAIN ITS BACK IN THE SHOP. THIS CAR IS A DEATH TRAP, I'M LUCKY I WAS NOT KILLED. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND FORUMS ALL OVER HAVE PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I BOUGHT THIS CAR BECAUSE I BELIEVED IT WAS SAFE, AND NOW I'M TERRIFIED TO DRIVE IT BY ANY MEANS. THE DEALERSHIPS AREN'T ANY HELP, THEY ASSURE THE PROBLEMS ARE FIXED WHEN THEY REALLY ARE NOT. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT AND I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY POWER STEERING. SHE NOTICED THAT WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS SET THE VEHICLE SPEED DECELERATED.THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED BEFORE AND AFTER THE FAILURE OCCURRED AND WITHIN SECONDS THE POWER STEERING ALSO FAILED. SHE WAS ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE MANUALLY BUT IT REQUIRED MORE EFFORT. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE GARAGE TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE DIAGNOSTIC LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE EMISSION CONTROL SENSOR AND THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 61, 500.

WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT. WITHOUT WARNING THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT POPS ON THE DASH AND THEN IT IS GONE. WHEN YOU SHUT THE CAR OFF THE POWER STEERING COMES BACK FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THIS OCCURS EVERYTIME I DRIVE IT NOW. MY CAR ONLY HAS 48000 MILES ON IT. WHEN IT GOES OUT IT IS VERY HARD TO STEER AND CONTROL YOUR TURNS. AFTER READING ALL THE COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH THE COBALT SURELY THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE STRUTS WERE FAULTY AND POSSIBLY CAUSED MORE STRESS ON THE POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 86,504. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,500.
