NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Try to completely shut the truck off but cannot remove the ignition key after putting the truck in park . After several times of starting the truck and moving the shifter back and forth then turning the truck off the key releases. Went on car gurus.com chat line and found this problem is widespread. Chevrolet dealerships will not honor the warranty on this issue if the vehicle is passed it’s warranty. Looks like someone is going have to get injured or trapped in the vehicle for Chevy to acknowledge this safety issue. Thank you for your consideration.
Driving down the interstate in my 2016 Colorado when the power steering failed. Light came on the dashboard stating power steering failure.. I stopped and checked the belt.. Continued to exit the interstate Very frightening with no steering assistance… Got home and let sit for half a day… When I started the truck the power steering came back…I made an appointment with the local Chevrolet service center for next week
About three weeks ago my power steering stopped working and the truck said it needed to be serviced, but when I restarted my truck the system started working and continued to work until yesterday. Yesterday it failed and when restarted it pulled hard to the right. This problem seems similar to the one which forced a recall. I have 76,390 miles on my truck. My code reader red: (C0545), and suggested it was possibly the steering wheel torque sensor or the steering wheel torque sensor wiring harness.
I lost assisted steering while traveling the interstate. I stopped at the nearest exit and shut off. I inspected the engine compartment and restarted, steering came back to normal. The same thing happened in a parking garage, , and has gotten more frequent. Took truck to Chevy dealership and they diagnosed a bad steering rack, and quoted $2700. to repair. The stability light comes on, followed by caution loss of steering light. Restarting resets condition every time. I can’t let my wife drive, as it takes two hands and a lot of force to steer with loss of assistance. Looking on line I found the 2015 model has a national recall for the same issue. I Attempted to purchase the rack and install myself , I discovered the 2015, and the 2016 is the same part number. Looking online there are many complaints for the identical issue with the 2016 Silverado.
Power steering goes off at random making driving very unsafe for me and everyone else on the road , will not be detectable via code and randomly will start working or failing at the drop of a dime.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH and steering the vehicle around a bend in the highway to the left, the power steering malfunctioned. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that he was able to drive the vehicle without the aid of power steering due to the speed. The contact drove the vehicle to his residence and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted the vehicle the power steering functionality returned. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 73,300.
Yes I am filing a complaint due to my high-pressure fuel pump line and also the fuel pump. The fuel pump works but it is very dry rotted on the top therefore resulting in a lot of cracks and pressure loss. I have a 2016 Chevy Colorado four-door. When I go to look up recalls there is recalls on the 2016 to 2018 Chevy Colorado’s due to this exact problem. But when I call Dell Earnhardt Chevrolet in Tallahassee Florida they state that it does not include my Vin number. I think it’s kind of funny that my truck is having this exact issue but not this phone number please obviously the recall needs to be expanded to include my Vin numbers. Anyway it goes I have a 2016 Chevy Colorado that I paid cash money for and there is no way should my fuel pump be dry rotted and cracked like it is and the fuel pump is still in working condition. What led me to this diagnosis was I was driving down the highway when multiple times my vehicle jaunted to a halt. I was able to crank it back up and go a few more miles before it would happen again. At this point I took it to my mechanic to put it on a code reader and it was reading fuel pump modular. I Cut a hole in the bed of my truck and was able to save fuel spraying everywhere for my high-pressure fuel pump line. I ordered this line from Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet for $62. When we get there and put the line on the fuel pump it is the fuel pump nipple and the top of the fuel pump is extremely dry rotted and cracked. There is no way should the fuel pump be dry rotted and crack on a six year old vehicle. Like I said the light never came on till after a few times of shouting me to a halt and this is my complaint
The ignition swich won't turn off in one of ten time. Truck could be stolen & driven away.
Driving down the road and power steering suddenly stops with a warning. Thankfully no traffic this morning but was extremely hard to steer to get home. So unfortunate all the complaints about this for 2016 with GM only indicating 2015 recall for this issue. 2016 should also be included!
Colorado truck has been experiencing intermittent failure of power steering system for several weeks. This has occurred on start up and also while vehicle is moving. The problem may resolve temporarily on its own and then recur at another time. Watson Chevrolet evaluated this problem on 9/28/22 and found “DTC UO420 42 Which states that the power steering control module was not properly calibrated, causing the electronic brake control module to lose communication with it. Reprogram the PSCM. Condition is no longer present.” The problem reccurred while driving on September 30, 2022. Chevy dealership has been notified and the vehicle will be taken back in for further evaluation.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that the power steering failed while accelerating from the vehicle being parked for a while. The traction control warning light, stabilitrak, and power steering service warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle became difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the rack and pinon needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 21V213000 (Steering) nor 16V054000 (Steering). The approximate failure mileage was 81,000.
While I’m driving, I randomly get an alert letting me know my stabilitrack and power steering have failed. It’s very dangerous
My steering lost power assist. Very hard to turn the steering wheel. I could not park my Colorado. I could only turn at higher speeds. I could drive fairly straight, but could not make any quick maneuvers. I would not have been able to avoid anything. The dealer said it would cost $2600 to fix it. Also the stabletrack icon came on. I felt very unsafe driving my Colorado. When I asked the service person what I should do because I couldn’t afford to fix it, he said “ park it and don’t drive it”. He was very rude. He wasn’t happy that I wouldn’t pay him $4250 for my steering issue and the display screen.
Randomly, sometimes when starting my truck and sometimes driving at speed the power steering and stabilitrack lights come on and an audible "ding" is made and I lose all power steering. I've read hundreds of complaints about this very same issue and a recall was made on the 2015 year models, but not for the 2016. I called the dealer and am told to drive it in when the issue replicates. Chevrolet knows about this issue and known repairs cost thousands of dollars. It is safety issue. Just today I lost power steering when entering a highway on a curve and almost drove the truck straight into a concrete embankment. Please do something about this.
Power steering and stabilitrak keep going out while driving. The electrical stuff on the screen on the dash goes out too
Wife driving truck on Sunday morning sept18 2022,in an area that is 25 mph add all of a sudden she lost all power steering of truck, had a very hard time getting truck home almost had an accident,. said nothing of a warning but when it happened then warning came up and also warning lights came on , said something about power steering not available. Had mechanic scan truck was told that it is a steering gear torque sensor. also provided me with a recall notice on the same thing for the 2015 Colorado's. there is a service bulletin on the 2016 Colorado's but not a recall, This truck was purchased in Aug. of 2015 so i believe it should be covered. The mechanic said it should be since it is the same parts that were recalled on the 2015 model.
Power steering/stabilitrak keeps going out and malfunctioning WHILE DRIVING
On two occasions, while driving without warning, the power steering disengages. There is a chime, and the stability system and the power steering are disabled. This is a very dangerous situation and a safety issue; there have been several complaints about this, and it seems to be a reoccurring problem.
My power steering and stablalink keep malfunctioning. My power steering will go out on me while I'm driving!
-- The power steering fails while driving. The Traction Control and Stabilitrak warning lights appear. -- The truck is very hard to control and unsafe when the power suddenly steering fails. -- The truck has not yet been brought for service to address the problem. -- The truck has not been inspected by anyone yet. -- There are not any indications of the problem before it occurs. -- It is extremely dangerous. The 2015 Chevy Colorado trucks had a recall for this issue, but there is not a recall for the 2016 although it appears to be a well-known issue.
While driving on the highway "service stabilitrack" warning suddenly appeared. The warning went away, but the light on the dash stayed illuminated as if I had manually turned off stabilitrack. Dash then indicated traction control was turned off, speedometer, rpm gauge, and temp gauge all started bouncing around and fuel range indicated "--". Also received a warning that power steering is not functioning. Vehicle would not appropriately change gears (automatic transmission), causing issues maintaining speed. I have a video of the gauges (taken by my partner while I was driving) that can be sent via email, or screenshots can be uploaded upon request. An online search yields several forum posts indicating this is a repeated issue for this model year, causing significant safety issues and leaving individuals stranded. Within forums I discovered a service bulletin regarding the issue, but it appears no one felt this was important enough to issue a recall or notify owners. I have not yet been able to get to a dealership for repairs, as this occurred on a weekend (while I am 14 hours away from home), but I will be contacting a dealer Monday morning.
I was driving and I lost the power steering
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, the contact became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, requiring increased effort to maneuver the vehicle. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering), but the VIN and the model year was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 135,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH and slowing down for traffic or a traffic signal, the vehicle would start to vibrate excessively. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated, and the vehicle almost stalled. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the canister purge valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced the failure two more times and was taken to the same mechanic. The contact stated that he had purchased the purge valve from an auto parts store and later purchased the valve from the manufacturer. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, the contact believed that the valves sold were defective. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
My car intermittently will display "Service power steering, drive with care" upon starting the car. If I turn off the car and let it sit for a couple seconds and restart the issue goes away. It seems to be behaving the same as N202325410 which was for the 2015 version of the same truck.
While driving the truck randomly loses power steering. The display screen states that the anti-lock brake system needs to be serviced. Once I turn the truck off and back on it seems to reset and work as normal. The dealer will not fix due to the truck not having any check engine lights on. This is very frustrating and a safety issue that Chevy needs to look at.
Power steering keeps failing. The repair shop said it would $2500 and it was a torque sensor failure.
The transmission went from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive without me doing a thing. The light came on that the transmission was transmission to 4 wheel drive. Then the traction control lights came on the dash which said they were off. The transmission was very sluggish, I pressed on the gas pedal to see if that would clear it and the transmission didn't engage. When I went to turn of the road my front wheels felt like they were coming off. (Hard to explain) it's like the wheels were turned to tight. And the front end shook. I was stuck.
my power steering will stop working intermittently. this can occur when first starting the vehicle or it can occur when traveling down the road. putting the vehicle in park and shutting the engine off then restarting and sometimes the steering comes back and sometimes it doesn't. lost steering again last week, drove approximately 10 miles and stopped by a local store. came out and started the vehicle and steering came back but the stabililink system light stayed on and the truck pulls to the left traveling down the highway. the problem is intermittent. the chevy dealer told me can't be repaired because they cannot replicate the condition. even though the service codes are set in the ECU. this has been going on for approximately 1 year or longer. extremely dangerous to drive this vehicle. no help from dealer
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while his son was driving 35 MPH, the stability control warning light illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to turn to the right. The contact also experienced the failure on 7/26/2022. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH, WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT AND THE STABILITRAK LIGHT COME ON AND I LOOSE POWER STEERING. TWICE THIS HAS HAPPENED AT HIGHER SPEEDS AND ON A CURVE, MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE TRUCK. I DROVE TO DEALER, BUT THEY INDICATED NO CODES WERE PRESENT FOR THE CHECK ENGIEN LIGHT. I EXPLAINED IT WAS NOT CHECK ENGINE RATHER THE OTHER TWO MENTIONED ABOVE. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN 6 TIMES NOW, AND THE QUICK CURE IS TO SHUT THE TRUCK OFF AND RESTART. THIS RESETS THE ELECTRONICS AND THE TRUCK IS FINE UNTIL THE NEXT TIME. LATES OCCURANCE WAS 8/23/22.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that on several occasions, the engine, traction, and stabilitrak warning lights illuminated then the vehicle went into Limp Mode. The vehicle was taken to AutoZone where a diagnostic test indicated that the powertrain system and cylinder #1 had failed. The contact stated while driving downhill, the RPM increased however, the vehicle failed to respond. Additionally, the contact stated that the ABS warning light illuminated and the vehicle went into Limp Mode. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pipe, fuel rail and fuel injector needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was then taken to a different dealer where it was diagnosed that cylinder #1 and the power steering failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that she would receive a loaner vehicle however, the manufacturer was contacted a second time where the contact was denied a loaner vehicle due to a warranty issue. The failure mileage was 138,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering assist failed with the power steering assist message displayed on the instrument panel. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not under recall. The contact was referred to a dealer and provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000.
Has happened multiple times where driving and notification comes on dash that Stabilitrak and Power steering are malfunctioning and then stop working. Has happened in the middle of a turn and the wheel turn to lead in my hand and I almost crashed. Every time it happens the only way to fix it is to pull over and reset computer and pray it doesn't shut off again while I'm driving. I've spoken to numerous others with the same year and have had similar electrical issues, as well I have seen dozens of people posting online asking the same questions so i know its not just my car and I know there is a recall out for the same part on the '15 Chevy Colorado. The issue of bringing it into the mechanic to fix is that if nothing is going wrong at the time they can't see the issue. This is an extreme safety issue. more than once the power steering has shut off while taking a steep turn. GM needs to be help accountable to fix this issue.
While making a left turn through an intersection, the vehicle's engine shut down without any warning. The electronics were still powered. My safety was put at risk, as other drivers were also going through the intersection. If this issue occurs again at another random time and I lose power while driving, this could easily result in an accident. I have not had it inspected by a mechanic, since it just happened, but have read online that others with Chevy Colorados have had this issue and could not find the cause.
While driving the Colorado without warning and unexpectedly will lose power steering and lock as I’m driving. It has happened over 10 different times and most recently this past Monday 6/6/22 as I was driving and about to make a right turn. It almost caused an accident because my truck couldn’t turn. Two service engine signs will display on the screen and after I pull over and turn off the truck then turn back on, the screen will reset and power steering works again. The Montebello Chevrolet dealer won’t fix it because they said the check engine light is not on. This is an imminent danger on the road and needs to be fixed.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering would suddenly malfunction causing the steering wheel to become difficult to turn in either direction. During the failure, the “Service Power Steering Assist” message was displayed. After turning off and restarting the vehicle, the failure was self-corrected. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 80,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated that the power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to park on the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The contact stated after restarting the vehicle, he was able to continue driving to his destination. The contact stated he experienced the failure a second time. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing an unknown module to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.
The vehicles power steering system has failed on at least six occasions while being operated over the course of the past 30 days. When the power steering system fails the vehicle display gives two warnings: First, steering assist is reduced drive with care. Second, service stablitrak. This puts the safety of the operator and others at great risk as the vehicle becomes extremely difficult to steer, especially at low speeds, as well as limits the driver's ability to drive reactively to their surroundings. This extreme loss of control has lead to uncomfortably close near collisions on two occasions. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or any other entity. There were no other warnings lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. However, the problem is highly common and with the use of a search engine one can easily come to the conclusion that the manufacturer needs to be held responsible for their faulty craftsmanship in reference to this issue.
My 2016 Chevrolet Colorado power steering suddenly failed while on a winding canyon road and I received 2 error messages on my dash. One error was for “stability track” the other was for “power steering service”. The vehicle was extremely difficult to steer and nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel if the truck was not in motion. When it was safe to do so I pulled over to check if there was a power steering leak, which there was not, I restarted the truck and the power steering came back and the error messages were cleared, making it seem like it was an electrical issue. I luckily was able to control the truck and not crash, if my wife was driving I do not believe she would have been able to steer the truck.
Key getting stuck in ignition after putting in park. Does not matter if on hill or flat service; is happening more and more frequently. Have read many articles with people having same problem. Getting very nervous!
The Power Steering keeps failing and this is dangerous once the vehicle is in motion. We have taken the truck to Lawley Chevrolet Sierra Vista AZ (Mando Flores-Service Advisor)several times within the last year and they claim they can't find anything wrong. We can't drive it until the steering is properly fixed. It's impossible to drive. We have to constantly pull over and turn off vehicle for the electrical system to reset . Then we drive for about 1/8 miles then the issue starts all over again. Once the power steer light comes on to include the stabilitrak warning lights then the vehicle is almost impossible to steer. My wife drives the truck most of the time and it's very dangerous and it's not easy for her to steer this vehicle once the power steering goes out. I'm disabled and not able to drive the vehicle in case the power steering goes out. Please thoroughly investigate this vulnerability & issue a recall to fix this issue.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the stability trac warning light illuminated and the vehicle became difficult to steer. The contact stated that when the steering wheel was increasingly harder to steer the "Drive Carefully No Power Steering" warning message was displayed. The contact drove the vehicle to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there was a power steering assist failure The vehicle was not repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 21V213000 (Steering). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 148,000.
The service power steering light has come on, and power steering has stopped working while driving. The stabilitrak light also
Common problem reported by many consumers, infotainment system changes stations, randomly shuts down, fast forwards songs on media, touchscreen non-responsive. Had mine replaced to the tune of $800+ and the same thing is happening to the new unit. Only this time, I get the entire system cutting out and then only the front tweeters coming back on after a minute. New unit does not have adjustable back up camera view, too bright at night when backing up, glare causes me to be unable to see.
The power steering failed while driving at highway speeds. I was able to steer, but it became very difficult. It made it very difficult to make turns when exiting the freeway. It has happened twice since I have owned the vehicle. I have not had it checked out by the dealership yet. It flashed a brief message to he affect of "Steering Assist is Reduced Drive with Care". Then what I believe to be the Stabilitrak symbol remained illuminated until I was able to pull off of the freeway and shut the truck off for a little while.
Vehicle randomly, intermittently loses power steering and stability control. This happens at random. I took the vehicle in to a GM dealer service center, they could not find any issue and said a repair had looked like it had been done already for this issue. The issue happened again several months later, and would not go away. Before, turning off the vehicle would sometimes re-enable the power steering. This time, it did not for several days. Now I am being told the entire power steering unit must be replaced as the sensor inside is going bad and cannot be serviced and quoted $2700 for repairs! This is the same issue as was detailed on the prior year (2015) model and was recalled. This is a major safety issue and an unreasonable repair cost for customers to bear! Please recall this and demand replacement from GM!
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the contact was unable to release the key from the ignition. The contact stated that he had to manipulate the steering wheel and ignition switch after approximately 5 mins and the key would release from the ignition. There was no warning light illuminated. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 49,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH, a warning chime sounded as the steering wheel became firm. The power steering failure message was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle resumed normal operation after the restart. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where he was informed that the failure was related to a defective steering wheel torque sensor. The dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure and both informed the contact that the vehicle was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, upon reaching the top of an incline, the vehicle began to shudder before losing motive power. The contact pushed the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The check warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed failures with the purge valve and mass air flow sensor. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was a possible failure with the vent valve canister. After a visual inspection of the engine compartment, the contact discovered water within the vent valve canister. After investigating the failure, the contact related it to Emission Recall: N202313200. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 96,000.
