DT*: THE CONTACT STATED RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE AND ALTHOUGH NO FAILURE HAS OCCURRED, THE CONTACT IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE SOLUTION. THE RECALL IS #06V181000 CONCERNING THE STRUCTURE; ROOF AND PILLARS.
MY 2005 Z51 CORVETTE ROOF PANEL FRAME KEEPS SEPARATING. JUST THIS WEEK THE ROOF PANEL FALL OFF HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE IN TRAFFIC. MY ROOF TOP HAS BEEN REPLACE GOING ON NUMBER 4. *NM
2005 CORVETTE TOP DELAMINATED AND SEPARATED FROM CAR. IT COULD HAVE INJURED A PEDESTRIAN OR CAUSED ANOTHER CAR TO CRASH.
BRAKE ROTORS ON DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE HAVE MULTIPLE VISUAL CRACKS AFTER 11000 MILES. *NM
THE ENTIRE ROOF PANEL OF MY 2005 CORVETTE COUPE DETACHED AND FLEW OFF THE CAR WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT 30 MPH. FORTUNATELY IT WENT OVER THE TWO CARS BEHIND ME AND LANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. *JB

MY TOP ON MY CORVETTE COUPE FLEW OFF WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS THE PAINTED TOP, NOT THE GLASS TOP. IT FLEW RIGHT OVER THE CAR BEHIND ME ONTO THE STREET. I WAS VERY LUCKY IT DIDN'T CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR THERE WOULD BE MAJOR LAW SUITS AGAINST GM. I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 35 MPH. THIS IS A NEW 2005 VETTE WITH 3K MILES ON IT. THEY GAVE ME A NEW TOP. THE DEALER SAID THIS WAS THE 3RD ONE THEY HAVE SEEN. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, DUE TO THE POSITION OF THE IGNITION START BUTTON, IT WAS ACCIDENTALLY PRESSED WHICH INSTANTLY SHUT OFF THE ENGINE RESULTING IN A LOSS OF ALL POWER. THE CONTACT MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE ENGINE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SEEN BY A DEALER AND NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. UPDATED 03/17/06. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET CORVETTE. WHENEVER THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE AT ANY SPEED INCLUDING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, HE HEARD A CRACKING SOUND ON ROOF. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE CONTACT HAS NOTICED THE FAILURE SINCE THE DAY THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 57000.
MY CHECK AIR BAG DASH BOARD LIGHT CONTINUES TO GO OFF AND ON. IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND I WAS TOLD UNLESS IT WAS ON WHILE I WAS THERE THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. FINALLY IN 2008 I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO THE DEALER WITH THE CHECK AIR BAG LIGHT ON. THE CODE SAID THE DRIVERS PRE-TENSIONER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THAT WAS DONE A FEW DAYS LATER AND THE LIGHT STAYED OFF FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. WHEN IT RETURNED I WAS TOLD IF THEY COULDN'T SEE THE LIGHT NO CODE WAS SET. I SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THE CORVETTE FORUM. (OVER 24,000 POST) THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2005 TO CURRENT CORVETTE. THE OWNERS HAVE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS DEFECTIVE CONNECTORS UNDER THE SEATS. THE AUTOMATIC SEATS MOVING CAUSES THE CONNECTORS TO LOOSEN AND THE LIGHT WILL COME ON. I CAME UP WITH A SIMPLE SOLUTION THAT MANY OF US DO OUR SELVES. WE ZIP TIE THE CONNECTOR TOGETHER. IN MY CASE IT WORKED FOR SEVERAL YEARS BUT THE LIGHT HAS STARTED APPEARING AGAIN. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE PROBLEM AS FORUM MEMBERS HAVE HAD COMPONENTS REPLACED THAT SEEMED TO HELP. IT'S AN ON GOING PROBLEM AND ONE OF THESE DAYS A CORVETTE AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY DURING AN ACCIDENT. GM DOESN'T SEEM TO CARE. *TR
CAR WAS SHUT DOWN AS PER INSTRUCTIONS...WITH GEAR IN REVERSE AND HAND BRAKE ON. AFTER ONLY 6 DAYS OF INACTIVITY THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. I HAD TO GAIN ENTRY VIA THE EMERGENCY HATCH ACCESS. BATTERY SHOWED ZERO VOLTS. *JB
DEAD BATTERY SYNDROME. AFTER SETTING FOR A FEW DAYS THE BATTERY ON THIS CAR DRAINS TO A POINT OF NOT BEING ABLE TO START THE CAR. THERE IS A VERY DETAILED SHUT DOWN SEQUENCE FOR THIS 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION CAR THAT SEEMS TO BE THE CULPRIT. HOWEVER, I HAVE HAD THE CAR TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES AND THEY HAVE YET TO BE ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN STRANDED 5 TIMES IN 10 MONTHS BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. *JB
I PRESENTLY OWN A 2005 C6 CORVETTE. MY CONCERN IS NOT ONE OF A SAFETY ISSUE BUT ONE OF A PROBLEM THAT CONTINUES TO EXIST WITH THE CAR DESPITE NUMEROUS TOWS (6 - 7) TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE RESPONSE IS THERE IS NO PROBLEM. MY CAR CONSISTENTLY "DIES" OR WILL NOT CRANK AFTER SITTING FOR 5 -12 DAYS. THERE APPEARS TO BE A BLIND EYE TO THIS PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS I HAVE OBSERVED ON NUMEROUS FORUMS. *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET CORVETTE. WHENEVER THERE IS ANY TORQUE PRESENT, THE CONTACT HEARS A CRUNCHING AND POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE ROOF PANEL. THE FAILURE OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY BECAUSE THE LAMINATED PART OF THE ROOF IS SEPARATING. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER SIX TIMES FOR THIS FAILURE, WITH THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE ON JANUARY 17, 2008. THE FAILURE HAS SINCE WORSENED. THE CONTACT DOES NOT BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A REPAIR AVAILABLE FOR THIS FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 22,900 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,000. UPDATED 05/20/08. *LJ THE SEAT BELT BUZZER WOULD GO OFF AT TIMES, THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR MADE A POPPING NOISE WHEN IT WAS OPENED. UPDATED 05/20/08
2005 CHEVY CORVETTE. HAS REMOVABLE ROOF TOP, THAT HAS FAILED MANY TIMES, LOCAL DEALER DOES NOT WANT TO REPLACE WITH NEW PART BUT WANTS TO "SQUIRT GLUE" INTO IT TO MAKE RIGHT, WHICH WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. HAVE ASKED GM FOR NEW TOP, OR GLASS TOP SO I DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY IF I WILL KILL SOMEONE WITH THE TOP FLYING OFF! GM IS NO HELP OR WILL RETURN MY PHONE CALLS. *JB
I HAVE A 2005 CHEVROLET CORVETTE THE TOPS ON THESE CARS HAVE A PROBLEM. WITH THE PROCESS THEY USE TO SECURE THE TOPS TO THE FRAME ASSEMBLY. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING MY THIRD TOP INSTALLED. THESE TOPS WILL PEEL OFF AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THESE ARE LARGE PIECES I HAVE HEARD REPORTS OF THEM FLYING OFF ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH WITH NO WARNING. THERE WERE FIVE CORVETTES WAITING TOP REPLACEMENTS WHEN I TOOK MINE IN. *JB
DETACHABLE PAINTED ROOF DELAMINATES FROM FRAME WHILE STILL ATTACHED TO CAR, LEADING TO POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO OTHER VEHICLES IF ROOF SEPARATES FROM FRAME WHILE DRIVING. ORDERED A NEW ROOF, BACK ORDERED, AND STILL USING CAR. SECOND VEHICLE AT SAME DEALER IN COCONUT CREEK FL (LOU BACHRODT) HAD ONE SO BAD THAT SIMPLY CLOSING THE REAR HATCH MADE PART OF THE ROOF JUMP 1 FOOT OFF OF ATTACHED FRAME. THUS SIMPLY A MISSILE AWAITING LAUNCH AT HIGHWAY/ROADWAY SPEEDS. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE ROOF ON THE VEHICLE HAS FLOWN OFF FOUR TIMES. THERE WAS A RECALL # 06V181000; PERTAINING TO THE STRUCTURE: BODY: ROOF AND PILLARS. THE CONTACT WAS UNSURE IF A RECALL LETTER WAS RECEIVED. THE FIRST THREE TIMES THE ROOF FLEW OFF, THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE ROOF. DURING ONE INCIDENT, THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY AND NO ONE WAS INJURED. THERE WAS NOT A POLICE REPORT FILED. *AK
LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND SEVERE VIBRATION WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL EITHER AT STOP OR SLOW SPEED WITH OR WITHOUT BRAKES APPLIED. A FEW INSTANCES OF MOMENTARY STEERING LOSS ON TURNS (BENDS IN ROAD) AT SPEEDS APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. PROBLEM STARTED AT PURCHASE IN JULY 2005 AND HAS INCREASED IN SEVERITY OVER THE PAST 8 MONTHS. THERE IS ALSO A "SNAPPING NOISE" UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED THAT STARTED 3/16/06. THE CAR HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 6 OCCASIONS AND I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GENERAL MOTORS CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE. SERVICE TICKET DATED 2/9/06 STATES "NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS VEHICLE, NO REPAIRS TO BE ATTEMPTED". SERVICE TICKET DATED 3/10/06 STATES "NO PARTS AVAILABLE TILL 6/06, NO WORK DONE AT THIS TIME". THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THIS WOULD NOT BE NORMAL IN ANY CAR BUT THEY HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED BY GM NOT TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND CAME ACROSS THE RECALL 05V455000 AND CONTACTED GM. GM STATED THAT BECAUSE MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT WITHIN A CERTAIN RANGE THAT MY CAR IN NOT INCLUDED, HOWEVER I FEEL MY CAR REGARDLESS OF THE VIN NUMBER DISPLAYS THE SAME CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POWER STEERING HOSE ISSUE. *NM
DT: THERE IS A WARNING SOUND COMING FROM THE BRAKES. OWNER IS UNABLE TO DISTINGUISH IF THE CAR NEEDS BRAKES OR IF THIS WARNING SOUND FEATURE IS JUST FAILING. CAR WAS TAKEN TO DEALER AND PUT ON DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE AND DEALER REPORTED THERE WERE NO VISIBLE PROBLEMS. ONWER CONTACTED GM SERVICE (#13433611303) IS THE SERVICE REQUEST #. GM BASICALLY STATES THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, THERE IS NO FIX. *JB
ON JUNE 22, 2005 WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED MY '05 COVETTE LOST ITS SERPENTINE BELT CAUSING THE CAR TO LOSE PWER STEERING, ENGINE OIL AND COOLENT. WITH THE LOSS OR STEERING THE CAR BECAME HARD TO STEER AND MANUVER. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN KNOW BY CHEVROLET THAT A SPECIFIC BOLT WAS NOT PLACED CORRECTLY DURING MANUFACTURING AND CAUSES THE LOSS OF THE SERPENTINE BELT. THIS WAS A SCARY EVENT TO LOSE STEERING AT 60MPH WITH A PASSENGER DURING THE ENDING OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC ON HWY114 AT 6PM. THE REPAIR IS TAKING PLACE NOW INVOLVING A NEW DIAMOND WASHER AND PROPER TORQUING OF THE BOLT. POSSIBLE ENGINE DAMAGE MAY HAVE OCCURED AND THE RELIABILITY OF THE VEHICLE IS NOW IN QUESTION. IN SOME OCCURANCES THE PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. I DON'T WANT IT TO BE ME AND HAVE AN ACCIDENT.
DT: THE RIGHT REAR AXLE SNAPPED IN HALF. TOTAL LOSS OF ANY FORWARD MOVEMENT OR ACCELERATION. THE CAR STOPPED ON ITS ON. CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO DEALER. THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED YET. DEALER SAID THERE WERE NO MANUFACTURING DEFECTS OR RECALLS. *AK
A BRAKE LINE RUPTURED ON MY VEHICLE WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT AT 55 MPG. I NEEDED TO EXIT AN INTERSTATE, AND THE CAR CAME TO A HALT VERY SLOWLY, THE REMAINING BRAKE LINE WORKING MUCH LESS EFFECTIVELY, OF COURSE. NO WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER I STOPPED, CLOUDS OF PURE WHITE SMOKE BILLOWED FROM THE HOOD, AND INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I ASSUME THIS WAS BRAKE FLUID CONTACTING A HOT SURFACE. I USED ONSTAR TO CALL FOR A TOW TO MY DEALER, CRISWELL CHEVROLET IN GAITHERSBURG, MD. CRISWELL DIAGNOSED THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURE. THERE IS SOME DOUBT WHETHER A DEALER CAN RE-INSTALL A BRAKE LINE SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY: SEE THE DISCUSSION AT HTTP://FORUMS.CORVETTEFORUM.COM/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?T=1113860&FORUM_ID=74 AS THE FORUM DISCUSSION INDICATES, THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER NEW CORVETTE OWNERS. NO ONE KNOWS, AT THIS POINT, HOW TO FIX MY CORVETTE AND WHEN IT WILL BE FIXED. HAD I HAD TO STOP SHORT, I WOULD HAVE HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, AS ONE OF MY BRAKE LINES HAD FAILED WITH NO WARNING, ON A BRAND NEW CAR.
DT: THE CONSUMER OWNS A 2005 CORVETTE C6. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THERE WAS AN ONBOARD COMPUTER THAT WOULD APPLY THE BRAKES TO ANY OF THE FOUR WHEELS IF THE CAR BEGINS TO SPIN. THE ONBOARD COMPUTER ACTIVATED THE RIGHT PASSENGER WHEEL AND MADE THE WHEEL LOCK UP. THE DIC ON THE DASH READ SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING SYSTEM. THE DEALERSHIP LOOKED AT IT FOR A HALF A DAY AND HOOKED THE COMPUTER ONTO THE CAR AND KNOW ERROR MESSAGE DISPLAYED. THEY TEST DROVE THE CAR AND STATED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND TOLD HIM TO COME AND PICK UP THE CAR. THAT AFTERNOON OF THE INCIDENT HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE HE PURCHASED THE CAR AND THEY HAD IT FOR 13 DAYS AND THEY TRIED TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM THEY CHANGED THE SENSOR IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT WAS TIED TO ACTIVE THE BRAKING SYSTEM BUT THEY COULD NOT ASSURE HIM THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD NOT REOCCUR WITH A HUNDRED PERCENT CERTAINTY OR EVEN WITH A HIGH PERCENT CERTAINTY. SINCE THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR THIS HAS NOT OCCURRED BUT HE ALSO MANUALLY SHUT THE SYSTEM DOWN. WHEN THE CONSUMER FIRST STARTED THE CAR THE SYSTEM WAS IN THE ON POSITION AND HE DEACTIVATED IT MANUALLY EVERY TIME HE STARTS THE ENGINE. *JB
VEHICLE BATTERY DEAD WITHIN 4 DAYS OF BEING PARKED IN GARAGE. OFFICIAL CHEVROLET "SHUT-DOWN" PROCEDURE WAS FOLLOWED. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2005 CHEVROLET CORVETTE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 10 MPH, THE CHECK AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC BUT IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000.
DRIVING NEW 2005 CORVETTE (1486 TOTAL MILES ON CAR) IN SHOPPING DISTRICT AT 35MPH. HEARD "SLAPPING" SOUND FROM UNDER THE HOOD. PULLED OVER AND FOUND THAT ONE OF THE UNDERHOOD ENGINE BELTS WAS SHREDDING. WAS AWARE OF A MANUFACTURERS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (05-06-01-001A - FEB 8, 2005), THEREFORE THOUGHT IMMEDIATELY THAT THE PROBLEM THIS TSB ADDRESSES WAS THE PROBLEM. THE OCCURRANCE WAS UNEVENTFULL, AS I WAS DRIVING VERY SLOWLY, HOWEVER IF IT HAD BEEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND BROKEN FLUID LINES UNDER THE HOOD. ENGINE WAS DISABLED. CAR WAS FLAT-BEDDED TO LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER WHERE IT WILL BE REPAIRED.*AK
COMPLAINT RECEIVED VIA E-MAIL. WHILE DRIVING HOME ,THE CRANK BOLT WHICH HOLDS THE ENGINE PULLEY, CAME UNTREATED FROM THE CRANKSHAFT. THIS DISINTEGRATED ALL THREE BELTS, AND I LOST THE POWER STEERING. AT 65 MPH, THIS IS RATHER AN UN-NERVING EXPERIENCE! HAD THIS HAPPENED TO A SMALL WOMAN, SHE MIGHT HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IN THE RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 10 INSTANCES OF THE CRANK BOLT COMING OUT FROM THE ENGINE. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET CORVETTE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BOLSTER IN THE VEHICLE WAS BUILT TOO HIGH AND IT WAS WEARING OUT. THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CORVETTE, AND THEY MODIFIED THE BOLSTER FOR HIM IN THAT CAR BY LOWERING IT. THEY CANNOT MODIFY THE BOLSTER IN THE 2005 MODEL BECAUSE OF THE AIR BAGS. THE VINYL ON THE BOLSTER IS PAPER THIN, AND WHEN HE GETS IN AND OUT OF THE VEHICLE IT IS WEARING THE VINYL OUT. THE DEALERSHIP HAS ALREADY REPLACED THE BOLSTER ONCE, AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THE CONTACT HAS OWNED THE VEHICLE LESS THAN SIX MONTHS. *AK
EQUIPPED WITH THE Z51 OPTION, THE C6 CORVETTES BRAKING SYSTEM SQUEAKS AND SQUEALS VERY LOUDLY.*AK
COMPLAINT RECEIVED VIA E-MAIL. MY 3 DAY OLD CORVETTE SHREDDED ITS SERPENTINE BELT, OVERHEATED, AND LOST ITS STEERING. CAR HAD 300 MILES ON IT. FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN READING ON 'CORVETTE FORUM THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT BUT HAS BEEN OCCURRING IN TOO MANY NEW CORVETTES. THIS PROBLEM COULD AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE AS IT NOT ONLY AFFECTED THE COOLING SYSTEM BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THE STEERING AND BRAKING. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THE REPAIR OF THIS PROBLEM WAS FAILING ON MANY CARS, AND THEY WERE EXPERIENCING IT FOR THE SECOND AND THIRD TIME. *AK. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVY CORVETTE. ON NOVEMBER 27 2004 THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT LET THEM GET INTO THE CAR AND THE ALARM WOULD NOT GO OFF. ALSO, THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR WOULD TELL THEM THAT THERE WAS NO TIRE PRESSURE AND THE TIRES WERE ON THE VEHICLE AND THE COMPUTER STATED THERE WAS NO PSI. THEY HAD TO CLIMB INTO THE HATCH TO OPEN THE DOOR BECAUSE THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN WITH THE KEY. ON APRIL 5, 2005 THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BATTERY AND IT DID CORRECT THE PROBLEM UNTIL APRIL 12,2005 AT THAT TIME THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED BASICALLY IT WAS THE BATTERY AND THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM AGAIN THIS TIME. APRIL 16, 2005 THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE JUMPED STARTED. ON APRIL 20, 2005 THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT GET INTO THE VEHICLE, THE BATTERY VOLTAGE WAS SHOWING ZERO, AND THE PSI ON THREE TIRES WERE SHOWING THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE TIRES ON THE VEHICLE. ON MAY 23, 2005 WITH ONLY 2700 MILES ON THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY THE SERPENTINE BELT BROKE, IT OVER HEATED, THE ENGINE HAD BLEW AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED. AROUND JULY 3RD OR 4TH WITH LESS THAN 3000 MILES, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT CORRECTLY AND IT WOULD AUTOMATICALLY STOP BECAUSE IT WOULD COME OUT OF CRUISE CONTROL, THE COMPUTER WOULD GIVE THEM STRANGE ERROR MESSAGES. WHEN THEY ARRIVED TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT IS WHEN THE HATCH ON THE BACK HAD CAME OPEN BY IT SELF AND IT HAD HAPPENED TWICE BEFORE THIS BUT THEY THOUGHT THEY HAD MAYBE ACCIDENTALLY OPENED IT. ON JULY 12, 2005 THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP THE PASSENGER DRIVER SIDE WINDOW MOLDING WAS MESSED UP. THE CONTACT TOLD THEM TO KEEP THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT WAS FIXED. THEY HAVE NOTICED NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE WITH THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEMS. ALSO, ON THE VEHICLE THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PUT A FULL FUEL TANK OF GASOLINE IN THE VEHICLE SINCE DATE OF PURCHASE. SERVICE INVOICES ARE AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. *NM
SEVEN TO EIGHT THOUSAND CHEVROLET CORVETTES BUILT IN LATE 2004 ARE IN A BATCH BEING WATCHED BY GM BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN DOZENS OF INSTANCES OF THE CRANK SHAFT PULLEY BELT BACKING OUT AND ALLOWING THE PULLEY TO LOOSEN OR FALL OFF. WHEN THAT HAPPENS THE CAR LOOSES POWER STEERING AND THE REST OF THE FUNCTIONS RUN OFF THE BELTS. THE BELT AND PULLEY CAN ALSO CAUSE OTHER DAMAGE UNDER THE HOOD. PRODUCTION NUBER CORVETTES FROM OVER THREE THOUSAND TO OVER ELEVEN THOUSAND ARE IN THE GROUP IDENTIFIED AS PROBLEMATIC. CHEVROLET HAS REALEASE A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN, TSB NUMBER (05-06-01-001A), BUT SAYS IT CAN NOT HELP BUYERS UNTIL AFTER A FAILURE. I OWN A CORVETTE IN THAT GROUP, AND I FEAR THAT I CAN'T TRUST THE CAR TO PERFORM SAFELY. I BELONG TO SEVERAL CORVETTE RELATED INTERNET FORUMS, AND I GET REPORTS OF NEW FAILURES EVERY DAY. THERE ARE DOZENS OF FAILURES REPORTED BY MEMBERS OF JUST ONE FORUM. THE FAILURES HAVE BEEN OCCURRING SINCE NOVEMBER, 2004. GM IS OBVIOUSLY NOT GOING TO FIX THIS SAFETY PROBLEM WITHOUT NHTSA INQUIRY, AND I'D LIKE NHTSA TO ASK GM TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT PROTECTING THE LIVES OF THEIR PURCHASERS. SPONTANEOUS LOSS OF STEER ASSIST AND FLUID LOSS IS A SAFETY ISSUE - IN MY OPINION. WILL NHTSA LOOK INTO THIS SITUATION BEFORE SOMEONE DIES, PLEASE? *AK
(1) PURCHASED CAR 10/23/2004. (2) ON 10/24/2004, LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR, THE CRANK PULLEY "CAME LOOSE" AND THE CAR THREW ITS SERPENTINE BELT (LEARNED AFTER THE INCIDENT) WHILE DRIVING ON A CROWDED INTERSTATE. THE FIRST INDICATION OF A PROBLEM WAS WHEN THE DRIVER INFORMATION CONSOLE (DIC) DISPLAYED A MALFUNCTION WITH THE VEHICLES CHARGING SYSTEM THAT NEEDED SERVICE. VOLTAGE DISPLAYED ON DIC DROPPED QUICKLY IN .1 VOLT INCREMENTS UNTIL ROUGHLY 11 VOLTS WERE DISPLAYED. THEN, THE CAR BECAME INCREASINGLY UNRESPONSIVE TO DRIVER INPUT FOR STEERING AND THROTTLE. BRAKES FELT "MUSHY" BUT CONTINUED TO RESPOND TO DRIVER INPUT. ALTHOUGH THE DASH DISPLAYED A FRIGHTENING NUMBER OF ERROR MESSAGES AND ALARMS, THE OCCUPANTS HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS THE MATTER WITH THE VEHICLE. TRYING TO CROSS 5 LANES OF PACKED FREEWAY TRAFFIC TO GET TO A SAFE BREAK DOWN AREA, IN A CAR THAT APPEARS TO HAVE LOST ITS MIND AND IS SPRAYING ANTIFREEZE ALL OVER THE HIGHWAY, COULD HAVE EASILY RESULTED IN INJURY OR DEATH. WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE THAT WE DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. 3) VEHICLE WAS "REPAIRED" AT OURISMAN CHEVROLET IN MARLOW HEIGHTS, MD. CRANK PULLEY, BOLT(S), SERPENTINE BELT, AND UNDERHOOD INSULATION (DAMAGED BY FLYING BELT) WERE REPLACED. A FRICTION WASHER WAS ADDED BEHIND THE CRANK PULLEY ON THE ADVICE OF GM TECH SUPPORT. *CAR BROKE DOWN AGAIN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM ON 13 NOVEMBER. CAR IS NOW AT RADLEY CHEVROLET IN FREDERICKSBURG, VA. GM HAS ORDERED THE MOTOR REPLACED AND THE DEALER IS AWAITING PARTS. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED FAILURE, THERE ARE OTHER LS2 ENGINES BREAKING DOWN BECAUSE OF THIS CRANK PULLEY PROBLEM.*AK

CONSUMER WRITES REGARDING ACTIVE HANDLING SYSTEM/ ELECTRIC STABILITY CONTROL *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES TO TURN THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL OFF OR LEAVING IT ON, HE IS ENDANGERING HIS LIFE AND OTHERS WHILE DRIVING. THE CONSUMER STATED HE WAS DRIVING ON DRY PAVEMENT WITH THE ESC ON AND THE VEHICLE DOWNSHIFTED WHILE ACCELERATING AND THE REAR TIRES WOULD SPIN. *JB
