I BOUGHT A USED 2000 CHEVY IMPALA FOR MY 75 YEAR OLD MOTHER IN LAW. THE CAR HAS A PROBLEM WITH STARTING AND THE SECURITY MODULE. YOU CAN DRIVE THE CAR TO THE STORE OR WHERE-EVER BUT WHEN YOU GET BACK INTO THE CAR IT WON'T START AGAIN. YOU USUALLY HAVE TO WAIT 10 TO 40 MINUTES WITH KEY IN IGNITION FOR CAR TO START AGAIN. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE ON THE INTERNET WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. WE ALREADY PAID OVER $700 FOR A NEW STARTER AND A NEW SECURITY MODULE BUT THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. OTHER PEOPLE CLAIM THEY HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS REPLACING ALL SORTS OF ITEMS AT RECOMMENDATION OF CHEVY DEALERSHIPS TO NO AVAIL. IT SEEMS THAT GM/CHEVROLET SHOULD INSTITUTE A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. IT IS ALSO A PROBLEM IN THE 2002 AND 2003 MODELS OF THE CHEVY IMPALA. *TR
2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA 4 DOOR WITH 3.8 V6 ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE DRIVING AND I WAS STUCK INSIDE DUE TO ALL ELECTRICAL GOING DOWN. POLICE ARRIVED WITHIN MINUTES OF ME CALLING 911 FROM CAR. I WAS JUST EXITING THE CAR 3 MINUTES AFTER CALLING THEM. DOORS WERE LOCKED AND CAR WAS A BLAZE AND ALSO SMOKE FILLED INTERIOR. PEOPLE WERE ALL AROUND VEHICLE AS I WAS TRYING TO EXIT. I NOW HAVE A SEVERE COUGH AND LUNG PAINS DUE TO PLASTICS BURNING AND NOW I AM TAKING ADVAIR INHALER. THE CAR GAVE NO WARNING AT ALL AS IT JUST BURST INTO FLAMES. THE DOORS AND ALL WINDOWS LOCKED. A CITY EMPLOYEE CAME RUNNING WITH AN EXTINGUISHER TO TRY BREAK WINDOWS AS I WAS INSIDE, I EXITED AS THE POLICE CAME TO CAR AND HE BLOCKED THE ROAD TO TRAFFIC WITH HIS CRUISER. THE FIRE DEPT ARRIVED SHORTLY AFTER HE DID. I WAS ALL BLACK WITH AN OILY SUBSTANCE AND SOOT AS WELL AS COUGHING LOTS. I AM AWAITING AN APPOINTMENT WITH LUNG SPECIALIST AS THIS COUGH WILL NOT SUBSIDE AND IT IS AWFUL AS I CAN'T TALK OR EXHALE WITHOUT GASPING FOR AIR AND COUGHING ALL THE TIME. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECELERATED AND BECAME UNRESPONSIVE. THE FAILURE RECURRED SPORADICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND NO SOLUTION WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,897.
TURN SIGNAL WILL GO OUT AT RANDOM TIMES AND WORK AGAIN ONCE I HIT THE HAZARD SWITCH. *TR
RIGHT PASSENGER HEATED SEAT OVERHEATED AND CHARRED LEATHER SEAT COVER BEFORE I NOTICED A BURNING SMELL. I'VE REMOVED FUSE TO THIS SEAT, BUT MY SEAT IS RUINED. MY LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER SAID HE HAS HAD THREE OTHER GM VEHICLES TO DO THIS AND EVEN CAUGHT ONE MAN'S COAT ON FIRE LAYING IN THE SEAT. BUT , HE SAID THERE WAS NO RECALLS ON HIS RECORDS FROM GM. NOW I'M STUCK WITH A FIVE OR SIX HUNDRED DOLLAR REPAIR BILL IF I HAVE IT FIXED. I CAN'T TAKE FUSE OUT FOR DRIVER,S SEAT, AS IT ALSO CONTROLS ANOTHER FUNCTION ON CAR. LOW BEAM LIGHTS WENT OUT. 150K THIS JANUARY HEATER NOT WORKING, TOOK TO GARAGE, TOLD ABOUT ENGINE COOLANT PROB. CALLED GM CANADA , TOLD MY CAR IS TOO OLD FOR THEM TO DO ANYTHING BUT THERE WAS A RECALL ON AN ENGINE PART THEY WOULD DO, TOOK THE CAR FOR A SCHEDULED APPT AND AFTER AN HOUR WAIT THE SERVICE MANAGER CAME TO TELL ME THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART IN STOCK AND "NOT TO BRING THE CAR BACK BECAUSE IT WASN'T GOING TO LAST LONG" I WAS VERY UPSET AND CALLED GM, THERE ANYWHERE WAS FOR ME TO GO BACK TO THAT DEALERSHIP. HOW INSULTING, I TOLD GM I USED TO HAVE A HONDA AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS OVER 10 YEARS OLD THEY FIXED A PROB WITH FUEL TANK FREE , WASHED CAR INSIDE AND OUT AND WERE VERY POLITE, THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS GM IS NOT DOING WELL, THEY HAVE NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ANY LEVEL. WHEN I FIRST CONTACTED THEM THEY SAID IT WAS MY FAULT BECAUSE I HAD NOT REGISTERED WITH THEM WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR (2002) SO THEY DID NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO INFORM ME OF ANY PROB. WHEN I ASKED IF ALL I SHOULD EXPECT FROM A GM PROD IS 80,000 MILES HE SAID NOTHING. THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROB SINCE 1985 AND THEY STILL DENY IT. I WILL NEVER BUY A NORTH AMERICAN PROD AGAIN. THIS IS JULY AND I AM STILL DRIVING THE CAR AND THE RECALL HAS NOT BEEN DONE. I FIGURE SO MANY VEHICLES ARE INVOLVED THEY WOULD GO BROKE IF THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THIS ISSUE. CANT SOMEONE HELP US. *TR
TRIED TO START OUR CAR. THERE WAS A LOUD BANG AND THE FUEL LINE CAME OFF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND THE INTAKE MANIFOLD RUPTURED. *TR
CAR RANDOMLY DOESN'T START. WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR(6 MOS AGO) I REPLACED THE STARTER HAVING NO IDEA THAT THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING OVER AND OVER AGAIN TO MANY IMPALA OWNERS IF NOT ALL OF THEM. STARTED FINE FOR 2 WEEKS AND IT'S BEEN HAPPENING EVER SINCE. SOMETIMES WHEN THE CAR DOESN'T START IT TRIPS THE PASSLOCK AND I HAVE TO WAIT ANYWHERE FROM 10 TO 30MINS BEFORE IT RESETS IN ORDER TO TRY STARTING AGAIN. I'VE BEEN DRIVING THE CAR AND AT QUICK STOPS I HAVE TO LEAVE IT RUNNING TO BE SURE I WON'T GET STUCK THERE FOR 30 MINS OR SO. I'VE ALSO BEEN STUCK AT GAS STATIONS WAITING 10 TO 30 MINS(AT THE PUMP) FOR IT TO START AGAIN (VERY EMBARRASSING). AFTER ALL THE COMPLAINTS I'VE READ I'M AFRAID TO SPEND ANYMORE MONEY ON THIS PROBLEM. *TR
WHILE TURNING THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS TO THE OFF POSITION THEY DON'T GO DOWN. THEY SAY IN THE UP POSITION. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOCK ON THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT DOOR WAS INOPERATIVE. IN ADDITION, HE WAS UNABLE TO UNLOCK THE DOOR MANUALLY. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE DOOR LATCH AND LOCK ASSEMBLY. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 61,378. . UPDATED 02-14-08 *BF
ONE DAY I WAS JUST GOING TO WORK LIKE AND MY CAR WOULDN'T START. THE SECURITY LIGHT WAS FLASHING SO I REFERRED TO THE MANUAL. I FOUND OUT IT WAS THE PASSLOCK FEATURE ON THE CAR AND IT WAS MALFUNCTIONING. I DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR THE MONEY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
RECEIVED 2000 CHEVY IMPALA AS AN INHERITANCE. WITHIN 2 WEEKS CAR AT TIMES WOULD NOT START. ALL LIGHTS ON DASH WOULD ILLUMINATE FOLLOWED BY THE YELLOW/ORANGE SECURITY LIGHT. THIS IS DUE TO A PASSLOCK PROBLEM WHERE THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM THINKS THAT SOMETHING OTHER THAN A LEGITIMATE KEY IS BEING USED TO TRY AND START THE CAR. MY SISTER HAD THIS PROBLEM AND AT TIMES WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE KEY IN THE IGNITION TO "ON POSITION" AND WAIT 10 MINUTES. AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF RESEARCH I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT TO RESET THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM THE KEY NEEDED TO BE LEFT IN THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE "ON POSITION" THEN REMOVED AND REPEATED TWO MORE TIMES (3 TIMES, 30 MINUTES TOTAL). AFTER DOING THIS I HAD NO MORE PROBLEMS. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED, AND PLENTY OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD TO HAD THEIR VEHICLES TOWED AND FACE A DIAGNOSIS FEE (AND PLENTY OF TIMES MISDIAGNOSIS). ACCORDING TO ALL THE INFORMATION READILY AVAILABLE CHEVY/GM HAS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AND I CONSIDER IT SHAMEFUL THAT THEY DO NOT ALLOW SOME KIND OF CONCESSION OR MODIFICATION SO THAT A CUSTOMER OF THEIRS WITH A LEGITIMATE KEY CANNOT START THE VEHICLE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE STRUCK A POTHOLE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE AND PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DAMAGED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 80,000.
OUR 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA WAS LEFT IN AN APARTMENT BEHIND MY CHILDREN'S' APARTMENT IN OMAHA, NEBRASKA. WHEN THEY RETURNED FROM CHRISTMAS BREAK, THE BATTERY WAS DOWN AND IT WAS COLD OUTSIDE. THEY TRIED TO JUMP START THE CAR USING JUMPER CABLES FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE NEXT TO IT. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN FRONT OF THE CAR TO REMOVE THE JUMPER CABLES AFTER IT STARTED. WHEN MY SON TRIED TO CRANK THE ENGINE, IT EXPLODED ALL OVER THE PARKING LOT, SHOWERING MY DAUGHTER WITH BITS AND PIECES OF THE PLASTIC TOP OF THE ENGINE. MY DAUGHTER WAS SHAKEN UP BUT NOT HOSPITALIZED AND HER CONFIDENCE IN STARTING GM AUTOS IS "GONE." GM CLAIMS THAT THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THERE IS 120,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION AND WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY SAFETY ADVICE ON STARTING THE VEHICLE IN THE FUTURE. THEY ALSO CONTEND THAT THE CHILDREN WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR BLOWING UP THE CAR BY STARTING IT WITH JUMPER CABLES, ALTHOUGH THE DEALER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT IT WAS STARTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE OWNERS MANUAL. THERE SEEM TO BE UNRESOLVED SAFETY ISSUES HERE THAT GM DOES NOT WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE OR ADMIT TO. *TR

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO WATER ENTERS PASSENGER COMPARTMENT THROUGH THE CABIN AIR FILER. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED A $5.00 PIECE OF PLASTIC WOULD HAVE PREVENTED WATER FROM ENTERING THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. ALSO, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE BODY CONTROL MODULE WAS REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS STARTED IN 2008 WITH A BAD BLOWER RESISTOR. OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES WERE THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW, THE OUTSIDE REAR-VIEW MIRROR CONTROL AND THE HAZARD SWITCH. THE DRIVER'S HEATED SEAT STOPPED WORKING. *JB
I HAVE A 2000 IMPALA LS AND THE RT SIDE SEAT WARMER OVER HEATED AND ALMOST CAUGHT ON FIRE. MY LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP SAID THEY HAD SEEN SEVERAL DO THIS, BUT THERE'S NO RECALL. MY HUSBAND UNPLUGGED IT AND REMOVE FUSE. NOW THE SEAT IS ALL BURNED AND CRACKING, LOOKS VERY BAD. WHY WASN'T THERE A RECALL ON THIS? SHE DEACTIVATED THE SEAT HEATER; HOWEVER, THE SEAT CONTINUED TO HEAT. SHE SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING AND NOTICED SMOKE AND A WHOLE IN THE SEAT. AS OF DECEMBER 14, 2007, THE DEALER HAD NOT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 160,900.
CAR WENT OUT OF CONTROL AFTER DRIVER PUT THE CAR INTO GEAR TO MOVE IT FROM A PARKED, IDLING POSITION, AFTER NOTICING A BURNING LIKE ODOR. IT WAS NOTED BY THE DRIVER AT THAT TIME THAT THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS IN THE RED ZONE. WHEN THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO MOVE THE CAR TO A SAFER PARKING AREA ONLY A FEW FEET IN DISTANCE, SHE HEARD A SHARP SNAPPING SOUND AND ALSO FELT A VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL/COLUMN AREA. THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD, THE HEAD LIGHTS AND DASH LIGHTING WENT COMPLETELY OUT AS THE CAR BEGAN ACCELERATING OUT OF CONTROL. IN ADDITION, THERE WAS NO STEERING OR BRAKE CONTROL. NO WORK HAS BEEN DONE YET TO CORRECT THESE PROBLEMS BECAUSE AN INSURANCE COMPANY IS INVOLVED. *TR
I AM CONTINUOUSLY HAVING STEERING PROBLEMS WITH MY 2000 CHEVY IMPALA. I HAD THE RACK AND PINION REPLACED 11/07 WHEN I LOST CONTROL OF MY CAR AND COULD NOT TURN. I ALMOST WENT OF THE ROAD FROM THIS. I THEN HAD TO HAVE THE STEERING LUBED FOR SOME KNOCKING NOISE AND VIBRATION. HERE IT IS 2 YEARS LATER AND I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. KNOCKING NOISE AND VIBRATION IN STEERING WHEN I TURN LEFT. I ONLY HAVE 106,000 MILES ON THIS CAR. WHEN IS IT YOU WILL HOLD THE COMPANY LIABLE FOR AN ISSUE THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT ALL ALONG? MY PROBLEM STARTED BACK IN NOVEMBER OF 2006. I HAD TO LEAVE WORK TO GO PICK UP A SICK CHILD. WHEN I GOT IN MY CAR IT WOULD NOT CRANK. I TRIED JUMPING IT OFF BUT IT STILL WOULDN'T START. I BORROWED A CAR FROM A COWORKER AND WHEN I CAME BACK LATER IT STARTED WITHOUT A PROBLEM. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A FUEL ISSUE. BUT AFTER READING ALL THE COMPLAINTS I REALIZED IT WAS INDEED A PASSLOCK PROBLEM. IT WILL HAPPEN ABOUT EVERY 7 TO 10 DAYS, IN FACT TODAY WITH THE DAY. WHEN OUT TO MY CAR AT LUNCH AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I DO NOT WANT TO SPENT $500 TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED IF IT'S NOT GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. ON THURSDAY 01 NOV 07 AND MONDAY 05 NOV 07 MY WIFE WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN OFF A BUSY HIGHWAY WHERE WE LIVE. WHEN SHE TRIED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT IT LOCKED OR WOULDN'T MOVE PLACING HER IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION OF POSSIBLY BEING HIT BY ON-COMING TRAFFIC. I CONFIRMED THE STEERING WHEELING LOCKING WHEN TURNING LEFT ONLY WHEN I GOT HOME BY DRIVING THE CAR AND HAVING IT LOCK ON ME ONE TIME IN A PARKING LOT. I HAVE SEEN A WEB SITE CALLED WWW.DIRECT.CA/TRINITY/GM-STEERING-PROBEM.HTM WHICH HAS RECORDED OVER 250 U. S. COMPLAINTS. IT MENTIONS POLICE CHEVROLET IMPALA STEERING CAN LOCK-UP WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND ACCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED. MY POWER STEERING FLUID IS AT CORRECT LEVEL AND CAR HAS HIGHER MILEAGE AT AROUND 148,000. WE ARE PUTTING A RE-MANUFACTURED STEERING RACK AN PINION IN THIS WEEK TO TRY AND SOLVE THIS PROBLEM AS RECOMMENDED BY WEB LETTER. *TR
VEHICLE WAS AT DEALER FOR LEFT AXLE SEAL LEAK. NEXT DAY VIBRATION NOTICED WHILE SLIGHT RIGHT TURN PRESSURE ON WHEEL. RETURNED VEHICLE TO DEALER. COULDN'T FIND PROBLEM ON LOT. AFTER TESTING ON ROAD FOR 2 MINS. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT TRANSMISSION HAD TOTAL FAILURE. *TR
CAR QUITS RUNNING FOR NO REASON. NUMBER OF OCCURRENCES = 4. USUALLY HAPPENS BETWEEN 35 TO 45 MILES PER HOUR. NOTING DONE YET TO REPAIR. ONBOARD COMPUTER DOES NOT SHOW ANY PROBLEMS. OUR CONCERN IS THAT IF CAR QUITS RUNNING IT COULD PUT US IN A DANGEROUS POSITION. *TR
MY 2000 IMPALA WILL NOT START FROM TIME-TO-TIME. I HAVE HAD IT IN FOR SERVICE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS AND THEY CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM. THERE IS ANOTHER 2000 IMPALA AT THE SERVICE CENTER RIGHT NOW WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. MY IMPALA HAS 75,000 MILES ON IT. IF I LET IT SIT FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND TRY TO START IT AGAIN - IT WILL THEN START. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 10 TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR. *TR
I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING FREQUENT (EVERY DAY) TURN SIGNAL FAILURES WITH MY 2000 IMPALA LS. MY IMPALA HAS THE 3.8 LITER MOTOR AND 94,000 MILES. THE HAZARD SWITCH SEEMS TO BE THE REASON FOR THE FAILURE. I HAVE LOOKED AT SEVERAL ONLINE "AUTO HELP FORUMS" AND THIS PROBLEM IS AN EPIDEMIC AROUND THE NATION. GM HAS RECALLED MALIBU MODELS FOR THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM BUT NOT IMPALAS. THE SWITCH IS A $50 PART BUT GM WANTS $300-$400 TO REPLACE IT. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD THAT GM IS AWARE OF. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 46,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,300.

FOR ALMOST A YEAR NOW, MY FUEL INDICATOR FLUCTUATES. ONLY TIME IT READS ACCURATELY IS WHEN IT IS FULL, OR ALMOST EMPTY. A COWORKER WHO ALSO OWNS AN IMPALA HAS SAID THAT HE JUST STARTED EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
ONE DAY IT JUST GOT WARM. WE TURNED IT OFF AND THE RADIATOR BUBBLED. I LET IT COOLED DOWN. I CHECKED THE OIL AND WATER. IT WAS PROBABLY A QUART LOW AND THE OIL LOOKED A TOUCH MILKY. OIL WAS NOT OVER FULL. I ASSUMED IT WAS FINE. THE NEXT TRIP TO TOWN AND BACK(ABOUT 20 MILES ROUND TRIP)IT RAN WARM ON THE WAY HOME. WHEN WE GOT HOME THE RADIATOR WAS BOILING A LITTLE BIT AGAIN. AFTER IT COOLED OFF I CHECKED THE WATER IS HALF TO THREE QUARTERS GALLON LOW ON WATER. OIL WAS REGISTERING A LITTLE MORE THAN A QUART OVER FULL AND REAL MILKY LOOKING. THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I CHANGE OIL AND FILTER. TOPPED OFF WATER. I ADDED SOME ALUMINUM SEAL AND TOPPED OFF THE WATER. AFTER I DID THAT IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS FIXED FOR ABOUT 8 DAYS THEN IT DID IT AGAIN. I HAVEN'T STARTED IT OR DRIVEN IT SINCE. IT IS GOING TO COST ABOUT 500-800 DOLLARS TO GET IT FIXED. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT GENERAL MOTORS KNOWS ABOUT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET PROBLEM BUT THEY WON'T RECALL ANY OF THESE VEHICLES. THERE IS EVEN A PETITION ONLINE TO GET THEM TO. MY CAR IS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. I DIDN'T FEEL LIKE I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKE. I CAN'T AFFORD TO GET IT FIXED AND I AM STILL MAKING PAYMENTS ON IT. WAS HAVING A HARD TIME STARTING THE CAR AT TIMES, ESPECIALLY ON SHORT TRIPS IN TOWN. TOOK ABOUT 7 CRANKS TO FINALLY GET IT STARTED. DROVE THE CAR THE NEXT DAY, EVERYTHING SEEMED OKAY DID NOT DRIVE CAR AT ALL OVER THE WEEKEND. GOT INTO THE CAR ON MONDAY AND HEARD A HUGE NOISE. I THOUGHT THE WINDSHIELD BROKE. LOOKED UP AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER HOOD. UNLATCHED HOOD, AND SAW THE INTAKE MANIFOLD EXPLODED ALONG WITH THE INTAKE PLENUM, AND THERE WAS A FIRE. BURNT THE INJECTOR CONNECTORS. CAR WAS NOW AT DEALERSHIP, AND CHEVROLET WAS SENDING AN INVESTIGATOR TO LOOK AT CAR AS THIS WAS A POSSIBLE RESULT FROM A RECALL BY GM REGARDING THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, WHICH I TOOK TO DEALER TO HAVE IT REPLACED. HOPEFULLY GM WILL TAKE OFF THIS.*AK

NO CRASH, BUT THE SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER,GAS GAUGE GOES WACKY MOST OF THE TIME THE GAS GAUGE DOES NOT WORK AT ALL, THE SPEEDOMETER WORKS ABOUT 25 PERCENT OF THE TIME, I HAVE READ COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER IMPALA OWNERS ON LINE AND THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS A RECALL FROM G.M. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW HOW FAST YOU ARE GOING. ALSO MOST OF THEM SAID THE TEMP. GAUGE GOES ALSO AND THAT CONCERNS ME IF YOU CAR WOULD OVERHEAT YOU WOULDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT IT HAPPENED, UNTIL IT WAS TO LATE, NOW YOU WOULD HAVE TO INVEST IN A NEW MOTOR AND THAT IS WAY TO COSTLY. THE TIE ROD ENDS, RACK, TRANSMISSION MOUNTS, TIRES, INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, AND BOTH AXLES HAVE BEEN REPLACED, BUT THE VIBRATION STILL PERSISTS. ON MARCH 6, 2009, THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND PAID $600 TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED HER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, WHICH WOULD COST $88. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,000.
TRANSMISSION FAILURE. VEHICLE MAKING GEAR WHINING, AND TRANSMISSION SLIPS AT HIGHWAY SPEED. SERVICE SHOP INDICATED THAT THERE IS A "SOLENOID SWITCH" THAT IS STUCK IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THERE IS A 50/50 CHANCE THAT THE DRUM IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS CRACKED, THEREFORE SHOP WON'T INVEST THE LARGE AMOUNT OF LABOR REQUIRED TO REPLACE THIS STUCK SWITCH. THE REPAIR WILL REQUIRE A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REBUILD. 120,000 MILES ON VEHICLE. $1500 OF REPAIRS FOR A STUCK, $20 SWITCH. NOT RIGHT.*JB
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2000 CHEVY IMPALA WITH 85,000 MILES. INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT FAILS EVERY 20-25,000 MILES. IT HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES ALREADY, AND IS FAILING AGAIN. DEALER ADMITS IT IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT AFFECTS ALL 2000-2005 DESIGN IMPALA'S. YOU KNOW IT IS FAILING WHEN YOU FEEL CLUNKING AND LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN CORNERING. I HAVE TALKED WITH MANY OTHER IMPALA OWNERS, AND THEY HAVE IDENTICAL PROBLEMS. COSTS $250 EVERY TIME THIS PART MUST BE REPLACED. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN WHEN A CRITICAL STEERING COMPONENT REPEATEDLY FAILS. *JB
AFTER NOT BEING USED FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH, I TRIED TO START MY 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA WITH 114,000 (+/-) MILES. THE CAR DID NOT START. I CONNECTED JUMPER CABLES AND AGAIN TRIED. THE CAR DID NOT TURN OVER. I WAITED A FEW MOMENTS AND THEN TRIED AGAIN. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY, THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE. I TURNED THE KEY OFF AND DISCONNECTED THE CABLES. THE TOP OF THE UPPER INTAKE HAD EXPLODED. THE PLASTIC ENGINE COVER HAD DISCONNECTED AND THE OIL FILLER CAP/TUBE HAD PROJECTED TO THE NEIGHBOR'S YARD. THE TOP OF THE MOTOR, FUEL LINE AND SURROUNDING WIRES/INSULATION WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT BY SMOTHERING. I CALLED A MECHANIC DIRECTLY AFTER THE INCIDENT AND WAS INFORMED OF A RECALL FOR THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. AFTER VIEWING THE RECALL FOR FOR THE 3.8L (VIN K) FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, THE POTENTIAL SITUATION OF A LOW BATTERY COMBINED WITH THE LEAKING REGULATOR CAUSING A BACKFIRE AND THUS EXPLOSION WAS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. I CONTACTED LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIPS AND WAS THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE. I THEN CONTACTED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE VIA A PHONE CALL ON DECEMBER 4, 2006. AFTER MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, I WAS REQUESTED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED, AT MY EXPENSE, TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP SO CHEVROLET COULD SENT A REPRESENTATIVE TO INSPECT. CHEVROLET THEN CALLED ME THE BEGINNING OF JANUARY TO TELL ME THAT THEY FEEL THE LOW BATTERY CAUSED THE EXPLOSION AND THUS, THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE. I ASKED FOR A COPY OF THEIR INSPECTION REPORT AND WAS TOLD IT WAS CHEVROLET PROPERTY AND WOULD NOT BE RELEASED. I THEN SEARCHED THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND FOUND VEHICLE RECALL BULLETIN 03054-B WHICH MY VIN # IS WITHIN THE RANGE GIVEN FOR 2000 IMPALA. I AGAIN CALLED CHEVROLET WITH THIS INFORMATION AND WAS TOLD THAT EVEN THOUGH MY # WAS IN THE RANGE, IT MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN INVOLVED, BUT IN ANY EVENT, THEY HAD INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THEY WERE NOT AT FAULT. THEREFORE, CHEVROLET'S DECISION WOULD NOT BE CHANGED. *NM

I DROVE AROUND THE REAR OF MY HOME WHICH IS WHERE MY GARAGE IS LOCATED. I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I ACTIVATED MY GARAGE OPENER FROM MY VEHICLE. ONCE THE GARAGE DOOR COMPLETED OPENED I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR ACCELERATED TO A HIGH SPEED. I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY I HAVE NOTICED THAT ME STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY STIFF AND SMOKE STARTED TO COME OUT FROM THE HOOD. I DROVE THE CAR HOME SLOWLY, AND THE NEXT DAY TAKEN IT TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP. MY ENGINE WAS BLOWN DUE TO THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET (WHICH ALREADY HAD BEEN REPLACED) AND THE HEAD GASKET WAS BLOWN. I HAD TO REPLACE A BRAND NEW ENGINE.($4K). NEXT MY TRANSMISSION WAS COMPLETELY DONE, AND I HAD TO REPLACE THAT. THE RADIATOR WAS MESSED UP AND HAD TO REPLACE THAT AS WELL AS THE STARTER. THE AIRBAG LIGHT WILL NOT GO OFF AT ALL EITHER. NOW I CAN NOT GET MY CAR SMOGGED DUE TO THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WHICH THE CODES CAME UP AS "TOO LEAN ON BANK 1" WHICH COULD MEAN A VARIETY OF THINGS ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC. TODAY WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN WHICH SMELLED LIKE BURNT PLASTIC. OH...HOW COULD I FORGET A FEW MONTHS BACK MY CAR JUST WOULDN'T START OUT OF NOWHERE AND THE MECHANIC HAD TO REPLACE THE SENSORS AS WELL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHO WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. ALSO, THE FUEL GAUGE DISPLAYED AN INCORRECT READING. FINALLY, WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THERE WAS A RATTLING NOISE IN REAR WHEELS. THE LAST TWO PROBLEMS WERE INSPECTED BY A DEALER.
