DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. UPON INSPECTION THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE AIR BAG SENSING AND DIAGNOSTIC MODULES (SDM) EXPERIENCED A MEMORY ERROR. THE SDM WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, # 00V244000, REGARDING THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. *AK
ENGINE/LOW COOLANT LEVEL LIGHT ON! OVERHEATING. PROBLEMS APPEAR TO BE SAME AS OTHER OWNERS OF 2001 IMPALA'S! HAD TO REPLACE ENGINE. STILL SAME PROBLEM W COOLANT. *TR
THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WOULD ENGAGE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AT LOW TO MODERATE SPEEDS. THIS OCCURRED ON DRY PAVEMENT AND SEEMED TO EXTEND THE LENGTH OF TIME NEEDED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE HUB AND SENSOR. THE PROBLEM RECURRED. THE HUB AND SENSOR WERE ADJUSTED. THE PROBLEM RECURRED. THE DEALERSHIP HAD TO REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. OLD PARTS WERE NEVER OFFERED IN RETURN. THE REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE TURNING TO THE LEFT AT LOW SPEEDS THE ANTILOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED AUTOMATICALLY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN TRAFFIC. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE TRACTION CONTROL DEVICE WAS DEFECTIVE AND HAS REPLACED IT FOUR TIMES, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSIST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.*AK
I HAVE A 2001 IMPALA WE BOUGHT NEW. IT HAS 62,379 MILES. I TOOK IT IN FOR A BRAKE JOB LAST MONTH FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE COMPANY I USE HAS A GOOD REPUTATION IN TOWN. THEY TOLD ME AFTER THE FIRST TURNING OF THE ROTOR WHICH THEY DID THAT THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH METAL LEFT TO TURN AGAIN. THAT SEEMS RIDICULOUS. ALSO, THE CAR AT TIMES WONT START AND HAVE TO LET IT SIT FOR 10-15 MINUTES BEFORE IT WILL START. I HAVE READ A LOT OF REVIEWS ON VARIOUS SITES AND IT SEEMS THIS IS A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT. I CAN'T AFFORD TO THROW OUT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS JUT HOPING THAT IT WILL BE FIXED. I HAVE HEARD ANYTHING FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH GOING BAD TO THE PASSLOCK ANTI THEFT SYSTEMS ERRORS AND OR THE BCM MODULE GOING BACK. ALSO SOMEONE SUGGESTED THAT I MIGHT JUST NEED TO GET A NEW KEY CUT AS THE OLD WAS HAS GOTTEN WORN AND THE ANTI THEFT DEVISE IS THINKING THAT SOMEONE IS TRYING TO STEAL THE VEHICLE. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND THE ABS WOULD FAIL. THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE HUB WAS REPLACED TWO TIMES, ALONG WITH THE WIRING HARNESS, SENSOR, AND THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE HUB. NONE OF THE REPAIRS REMEDIED THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT UNLESS THE VEHICLE PROVIDED ERROR CODES, THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. THE DIAGNOSTIC PRODUCED ERROR CODES, WHICH INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE SENSOR AND EXCESSIVE SPEED IN THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OPENER. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT ASSIST SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 63,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,000.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE'S RIGHT TURN SIGNAL DID NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN ACTIVATED. BOTH TURN SIGNALS DO NOT FUNCTION AT TIMES. THE SIGNAL MALFUNCTIONS INTERMITTENTLY. THERE WAS ANOTHER VEHICLE MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER WHO HAD A RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED BUT HAS NOT RESPOND TO THE CONTACT'S CONCERNS.
REPORTED TO FAIRGROUNDS CHEVY THAT ALL THE EMERGENCY LIGHTS CAME-ON INTERMITTENTLY - AUG 12, 2005 WE HEARD A HISSING NOISE FROM THE DASH AREA AND THAT THE EMERGENCY LIGHTS STILL COME ON AS REPORTED EARLIER. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WAS BAD. *JB
TURN SIGNALS ONLY WORK SPORADICALLY. 2001 CHEVY IMPALA. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING OVER THE PAST YEAR. THE DEALER CAN'T TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG. *JB
STEERING COLUMN HAS HAD CLUNKING NOISE THAT CAN BE HEARD AND FELT WHILE DRIVING. HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP ON DIFFERENT SERVICE VISITS. *JB
I OWN A 2001 CHEVROLET IMPALA WITH A STEERING PROBLEM. THE DEALER "REPAIRED" THE STEERING MECHANISM TWICE UNDER WARRANTY AND NOW I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE STEERING MAKES A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WHEN TURNING, OR GOING SLOW. AFTER 3 TIMES I HAVE NOW CONCLUDED IT IS ALSO CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH MY BRAKES AND TIRE WEAR. I GET A STEADY VIBRATION AND THE STEERING FEELS LOOSE. I HAVE REPLACED BRAKES, ROTORS AND TIRES. PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS. I BELIEVE IT IS DANGEROUS. IT FEELS LIKE I WILL LOSE CONTROL OF MY CAR. I WAS DRIVING ALONG AND THE CAR SUDDENLY SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. THIS WAS DUE TO IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEMS PLEASE SEE CASE NUMBER 2:16-CV-00111-WKW-WC,SMITH V. CEDAR CREST NURSING HOME ET.AL.,. THE CAR WAS ON A CITY STREET OR HIGHWAY IN THE CITY OF MONTGOMERY,ALABAMA.
THIS COMPLAINT IS AN UPDATE TO TWO PREVIOUSLY FILED COMPLAINTS 10949546 AND 10948110 BOTH COMPLAINTS DEAL WITH IGNITION SWITCH ISSUES BOTH WERE REPORTED AS MISSING OR STOLEN AS A RESULT OF IGNITION DIFFICULTIES. THIS SERVES AS AN UPGRADE TO THE COMPLAINTS AS BEING BOTH STOLEN AT THIS POINT DUE TO THE LENGTH OF TIME THAT BOTH VEHICLES HAVE BEEN MISSING.
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 2001 CHEVY IMPALA. SHORTLY AFTER I NOTICE WHEN I FIRST STARTED THE CAR,THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE SHOWED THE CAR OVERHEATING, TOOK TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. A FEW WEEK AFTER THAT IT QUIT WORKING ALL TOGETHER. SO I LOOK ON THE CAR STATS. COM AND FOUND COMPLAINTS CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM. SOLUTION I TOOK THE CAR TO REPEATABLE CAR MECHANIC .THE FIRST THING HE DID WAS TO TAKE THE RADIATOR CAP OFF, IT WAS FULL OF BROWN SLUDGE, HE SAID THAT GM TRIED TO SAVE MONEY BY PUTTING IN A $2.00 MANIFOLD GASKET IN ALL 3.4 ENGINES, THEY ALL FAIL BETWEEN 35,000 AND 40,000. IT COST $580. YOU CAN NOT REPLACE ONE GASKET YOU BUY ALL THREE IN A REPLACE KIT AND CHANGE THE OIL AND ANTIFREEZE. I FOUND OUT THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ROUTINELY MISSED. THEY JUST RESET THE COMPUTER AND THE GAUGE WORKS FOR A SHORT TIME THEN WITHOUT WARNING IT QUITS. MY MECHANIC SAID THIS IS SO COMMON HE HAS PAID FOR HIS CHILDRENS COLLEGE EDUCATION. GM DOES NOT COVER THIS COMMON FAILURE UNDER ANY WARRANTY. I WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE I BUY ANY GM PRODUCT. *NM
SERVICE TRACTION SYSTEM, ABS LIGHT CONTINUE TO COME ON. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO GET SERVICED FOR THIS PROBLEM SINCE I PURCHASED IT. IT HAD ONE OF THE BEARINGS REPLACED WHILE UNDER WARRANTY, BUT I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE OTHER BEARING, AND HUB SENSORS AT MY EXPENSE. THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM ACTIVATES FOR NO REASON AND CREATES A VIBRATION AND INABILITY TO BRAKE ON TIME. THE CAR ALSO HAS A SECURITY LIGHT COME ON INTERMITTENTLY AND THE CAR SOMETIMES DOESN'T START FOR NO APPARENT REASON. USUALLY IF WE WAIT ABOUT 30 MIN. IT WILL TURN BACK ON, BUT I HAVE HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP WHEN NOTHING WOULD TURN IT ON. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND WAS FIRST TOLD IT WAS THE EGR VALVE THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, BUT NOW AM BEING TOLD IT NEEDS A NEW CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I'VE TAKEN IT TO A CERTIFIED DEALERSHIP AT LEAST 5 TIMES A YEAR SINCE 2006 AND THESE PROBLEMS ARE NEVER CORRECTED. *TR
THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILED AND WAS COVERED BY A GM SPECIAL POLICY. DUE TO THE FAILED CATALYTIC CONVERTER THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD ALSO FAILED RESULTING IN AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR BILL. GM WOULD NOT COVER THE COST OF THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD EVEN THOUGH IT FAILED FROM A KNOWN ISSUE. THE REPAIR BILL STATES, "UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD FAILURE DUE TO CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILURE." *NM
MY 2001 CHEVROLET IMPALA STARTED THIS PROBLEM ABOUT A MONTH AGO. OBVIOUSLY, IT IS ANNOYING, BUT IT CONCERNS ME MOSTLY DUE TO THE SAFETY ASPECT. I BELIEVE I HAVE DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM BY MY RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AS WELL AS FINDING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE 2001 PONTIAC GRAND AM ON THE INTERNET FROM OTHER OWNERS. MY TRIPS TO MULTIPLE DEALERSHIPS AND REPAIR SHOPS HAVE PROVED WORTHLESS. THE CAR WILL FAIL TO START AT TIMES. THE SECURITY LIGHT COMES ON. AFTER 10 TO 15 MINUTES IT WILL START AND RUN GREAT. IT APPEARS TO BE A PASSLOCK SECURITY PROBLEM THAT WILL BE VERY COSTLY TO REPAIR. I BELIEVE GM SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL SO THE CONSUMER DOES NOT HAVE TO FOOT THE BILL TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED. THE CAR CRANKS OVER FINE AND THE BATTERY IS NEW, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE NO FUEL GETTING TO WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO GO. PLEASE RESEARCH AND I AM SURE YOU WILL FIND THAT OTHER IMPALA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I DID NOT SEE A RECALL OUT ON THIS PROBLEM YET. *JB
I PURCHASED THIS CAR WITH 28,000 MILES ON IT. AROUND 38,000 MILES IS WHEN THE PROBLEMS STARTED. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT WOULD NOT PASS SMOG BECAUSE OF THAT. THE THERMOSTAT GETS STUCK, THE FAN CONTINUES TO RUN AFTER CAR IS SHUT OFF, THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT LOW. THE CAR SMELLS LIKE IT IS BURNING OR RUNNING HOT. THE CAR NOW HAS 53,000 MILES ON IT AND I CANT AFFORD TO GET IT FIXED. IT HAS EXPIRED TAGS ON IT BECAUSE I CANT GET IT TO PASS SMOG. I AM REALLY UPSET TO FIND OUT THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE MAKE OF THE CAR. IT WAS HARD ENOUGH TO COME UP WITH THE MONEY TO BUY THIS CAR AND NOW I CANT DRIVE IT MORE THEN TO WORK AND BACK. I AM HOPING THEY WILL RECALL THIS CAR AND I COULD FINALLY GET IT FIXED. *TR
REPEATED BROKEN WINDOW MECHANISM IN TWO SEPARATE CHEVROLET CARS IN THE PAST TWO YEARS. *JB
POWER TRAIN FAILURE: FIRST SIGN OF PROBLEM WAS HARSH SHIFTING, HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGED, STILL HAD SAME PROBLEM. BEFORE I FOUND THE SERVICE BULLETINS ON THIS PROBLEM THE PLANETARY GEARS GOT CHEWED UP BY A BROKEN PIECE OF METAL, HAD TO REBUILD THE TRANSMISSION $1800. FILED COMPLAINT WITH GM, SINCE I DID NOT HAVE IT REPAIRED AT A DEALER (FOR TWICE THE PRICE) THEY WOULD NOT HELP. NOW I HAVE A 2001 MONTE CARLO SHOWING THE SAME HARSH SHIFTING. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BE FLUSHED BY THE DEALER AND THEY PUT AN ADDITIVE INTO THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO HELP THE STICKY VALUE PROBLEM, DID NOT WORK. THERE IS A PATTERN HERE AND GM WILL NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. *NM
I TOOK MY 2001 IMPALA TO THE GM DEALER AT 23K MILES FOR A NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN, AT THAT TIME THEY SAID THEY HAD TO REPLACE AN INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT PLUS OTHER ISSUES NON RELATED. AT 73K THEY REMOVED THE SHAFT AND LUBED IT AND REPLACED LEFT OUTER TIE ROD FOR $510+. AT 98K MY FRONT WHEEL HUBS WERE REPLACED AND THEY REPLACED THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT AGAIN AND CHARGED ME $125 FOR THE SHAFT AND ANOTHER $975+ FOR THE REST. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR BACK TWO WEEKS LATER FOR YET ANOTHER STEERING PROBLEM THEY SAID IT WAS MY RACK AND PINION THIS TIME AND CHARGED ME $1083. THAT WAS TODAY, TONIGHT ON MY WAY HOME WITH MY WIFE, THE CAR DID THE SAME THING WHILE TURNING RIGHT ON AN EXIT RAMP. I CALLED 1-800-GM AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME EXCEPT OFFER ME A GM LOYALTY CERT GOOD FOR SOME $ OFF A PURCHASE OF A NEW GM PRODUCT. I HAVE BEEN FAITHFUL RETURNING TO THE GM DEALER EACH TIME WITH STEERING PROBLEMS (AND OTHER ISSUES NOT RELATED) EXPECTING A FIX AND OVER THE ALMOST 5 YEARS AND ALMOST 100K MILES AND MANY DOLLARS SPENT I HAVE LOST MY FAITH IN GM. *NM
AFTER A YEAR OF CLUNKING SOUNDS IN THE STEERING COLUMN, I'VE JUST TAKEN THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. I WAS TOLD IN THE PAST THAT IT WAS NOT A PROBLEM. NOW THE SOUNDS ALL ADD UP TO $1500 IN REPAIRS, FOR A PROBLEM THAT I'VE FOUND 4 OTHER IMPALA OWNERS HAVE. NEEDED FOR REPAIR ARE STEERING GEAR, STEERING SHAFT, POWER STEERING PUMP, SERPENTINE BELT (OLD ANYWAY), AND ALL WHEEL ALIGNMENT (RECOMMENDED FOR THIS WORK). ALL TOTALING JUST UNDER $1700. MY AUNT HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM, IT WAS REPAIRED TWICE UNDER WARRANTY. TALKING ON BREAK AT WORK, FOUND OUT OUR COMPANY CAR (IMPALA) HAS THE SAME ISSUE, ANOTHER EMPLOYEES IMPALA HAS THE SAME NOISE. THIS IS A MANUFACTURER PROBLEM THAT THEY WILL NOT RECOGNIZE. *NM
THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE IS NOT WORKING CONSISTENTLY. IT WILL GO BELOW COLD SPORADICALLY. THIS WILL CAUSE THE FANS TO RUN CONTINUOUSLY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON. THE CODES DO NOT MATCH THE PROBLEM AND THE HAYNES BOOK DOES NOT MATCH THE CAR EITHER. COOLANT LEAKS FROM INTAKE MANIFOLD, PROBABLY BAD GASKETS. *NM
DT CONSUMER STATED THE THERMOSTAT WENT OUT ON THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD NOISE, AND THE FAN WOULD RUN FOR ABOUT FIVE MINUTES. THE MECHANIC HAD FOUND OIL IN THE COOLANT. THE LOWER INTAKE GASKET, WATER PUMP, AND THE THERMOSTAT WERE REMOVED AND REPLACED. THE MECHANIC STATED WHEN GOING FROM WARM TEMPERATURES TO COLD TEMPERATURES THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED. *AK UPDATED 11/16/2005. *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT IT WOULD NOT START DUE TO THE SECURITY PASS LOCK. THE ISSUE HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 137,933.

FOR THE LAST YEAR, EVERY SO OFTEN, MY IMPALA WON'T START. I'VE PUT A NEW BATTERY IN IT, BUT THE DAY I DID THAT, IT STILL WOULDN'T START. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT, BUT THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND ALSO REFUSED TO WORK ON MY CAR. IN CONTACTING CHEVROLET REGARDING THE PROBLEM, THEIR RESPONSE WAS FOR ME TO TRADE IN MY CAR AND MAKE IT SOMEONE ELSE'S PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT IT COULD BE ONE OF TWO THINGS, EITHER THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM OR THE IGNITION SWITCH AND BOTH WOULD COST AROUND $700 EACH TO FIX. I'M TIRED OF WONDERING IF MY CAR IS GOING TO START OR IF I'M GOING TO BE STRANDED SOMEWHERE.*JB

THE CONTACT MUST PUSH IN THE HAZARD LIGHT SWITCH TO GET THE TURN SIGNALS TO FLASH ON AND OFF CORRECTLY. - I HAVE A 2001 IMPALA LS 3.8L WITH TRACTION CONTROL - SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. ABS BRAKES WOULD ENGAGE WHEN MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN (LOOSE OR TIGHT TURN) AND WHEN ACCELERATION FROM A STOP. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THE ABS TO ENGAGE WHEN MAKING THESE TURNS, ROAD CONDITIONS WERE PERFECT. - I TOOK THE CAR TO THE SHOP AND THEY SAID THE SPEED SENSOR HAS FAILED DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS (PLEASE REFERENCE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V379000 FOR A RECALL ON GM PICKUP TRUCKS AND SUV'S). MY CAR IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS CAMPAIGN BUT THE PROBLEM DESCRIBE IN THE CAMPAIGN IS EXACTLY WHAT HAS FAILED IN MY SITUATION. - THE SHOP REPLACED THE RIGHT FRONT HUB BEARING AND WIRING HARNESS USING HUB KIT 6.307 AND SENSOR KIT 4.720 -PROBLEM WAS FIXED - I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY CARS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER THE CAPAIGN LIKE TRUCKS AND SUV'S THAT HAVE THE SAME SPEED SENSOR.*JB
TURNING INTO MY MOTHER'S DRIVEWAY, I APPLIED THE FOOT BRAKE. THE TOE OF MY SHOE HIT THE PANEL ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE DASH. AS I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE TO RELEASE THE PEDAL, THE PANEL FELL ONTO AND BLOCKED THE PEDALS. THE PANEL WAS TETHERED BY A BULB, SOCKET AND CABLE. I COULD NO LONGER REACH OR OPERATE THE BRAKE PEDAL AGAIN. I STOPPED THE VEHICLE BY SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL AND APPLYING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. ALTHOUGH GOING VERY SLOWLY, BY THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO STOP I HAD CRASHED INTO MY MOTHER'S GARAGE DOOR. ONE OF 2 PLASTIC CLIPS BROKE WHEN THE TOE OF MY SHOE STRUCK IT CAUSING IT TO FALL AND BLOCKING THE USE OF THE PEDALS. IF THIS HAD OCCURRED AT 60 MPH, I WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED. MY ASSESSMENT IS "FAULTY DESIGN" OF THE PANEL AND CLIPS. STRIKING THE PANEL WITH THE TOE OF THE SHOE SHOULD NOT BREAK THE FASTENERS SUCH THAT THE PANEL FALLS AND MAKES THE PEDALS UNREACHABLE AND UNUSABLE. *NM
DT: THE CALLER SAID THAT WHILE ACCELERATING TO GET BACK ON THE HIGHWAY LOST FORWARD MOTION. HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. HE WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE PUSHED OFF THE ROAD. VEHICLE WAS TOWED. I HAVE A 2001 CHEVY IMPALA IT HAS A COMPLETELY CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC. I CONTACTED COUNTRY CHEVY IN WARWICK NY THEY CANT HELP ME W/O CHARGING ME BECAUSE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED 1800 MILES AGO. I UNDERSTAND FROM THERE SERV DEPT AS WELL AS NUMEROUS MECHANICS THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAS NO WARNING LIGHT FOR THIS OR I MAY HAVE KNOW PRIOR TO WARRANTY EXPIRING. THE ANTILOCKING BRAKES SYSTEM OF MY 2001 IMPALA CAR CORRODED WITH ONLY 5264 MILES ON THE CAR. I HAD TO PAY $760.49 TO HAVE THEM REPLACED. I DROVE THE CAR ONE DAY AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE, THEN THE NEXT WEEK WHEN I DROVE THE CAR, EVERYTIME THAT I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE, THERE WAS THIS TERRRIBLE SCRAPING, NOISE, EVEN AFTER THE CAR HAD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. IT WAS SO LOUD THAT EVERYONE ON THE STREET AND IN CARS NEXT TO ME WAS TURINING TO LOOK AT MY CAR TO SEE WHERE THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM. I FEARED STEPING ON THE BRAKE AND WAS NOT SURE THAT I COULD GET THE CAR AND MYSELF HOME SAFELY. ON 8/30.05, LIZ CRENSHAW, THE CONSUMER REPORTER FOR CHANNEL 4, NBC NEWS REPORTED AND IT WAS ALSO IN THE WASHINGTON POST NEWSPAPER ON 8/31/05 THAT GM HAD RECALLED PICKUP TRUCKS AND SUV, 1999-2002, BECAUSE OF CORROSION OF THE BRAKES. IT STATED THAT THE NHTSA HAD OPENED THE INVESTIGATION IN APRIL OF MORE THAN 1.2 GM PICKUPS AND SUV'S IN 20 STATES BECAUSE OF QUESTIONS OVER THE ANTILOCK BRAKES. THIS IS THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR. I E-MAILED CHEVROLET AND A DUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER CALLED ME AND DENIED EVEN KNOWING THAT THERE WAS SUCH A STUDY AND RECALL. SHE (HEATHER VOLTZ) SAID THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL WITH REGARD TO SENSORS BUT NOT CORROSION OF THE ABS. SHE WASNTED ME TO SEND HER ALL THE INFORMATION AND I SUGGESTED SHE COULD GO TO YOUR WEBSITE AND READ IT THE SAME AS I DID. SHE IS NOW WAITING FOR ME TO SEND HER THE COPY OF THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLE FROM THE WASHINGTON POST, WHICH SHE COULD ALSO LOOK UP ON THEIR WEBSITE. I AM GOING TO SEND THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. I DO NOT LIKE BEING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST BECAUSE I HAVE A CAR AND NOT AN SUV OR PICKUP. THE CORROSION HAPPENED TO THE CAR THE SAME AS TO THE SUV'S AND PICKUPS. ABS AND TRACT CONTROL LIGHT COME ON INTERMITTENLY. DEALER CANT SOLVE ISSUE, WAS TOLD BY MANUFACTURER TO PUT SOME " SPECIAL TAPE" ON WIRING HARNESS. ALSO AT FIRST ACCELERATION TRACTION CONTROL KICKS IN. HAD RF HUB BEARING AND STEERING SHAFT REPLACED. NO RESOLUTION
MY 2001 CHEVROLET IMPALA MAKES A VERY LOUD BANGING NOISE WHEN ROTATING THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE STOPPED OR AT VERY LOW SPEED, SUCH AS WHEN PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE.I HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY THE CHEVROLET DEALER WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW, THE INSPECTION REVEALED FAULTY SUB FRAME WELDING. THE MECHANIC ALSO SAID THIS WAS VERY COMMON WITH THE RECENT IMPALA'S AND AFTER MANY SUB FRAMES WERE REPLACED DUE TO MISSING VERTICLE WELDS AND FAULTY SUB FRAME WELDS, THE MANUFACTURER{ GENERAL MOTORS} BEGAN USING A LESS EXPENSIVE SUPER GLUE TYPE LOCKING MATERIAL KIT OVER THE FAULTY WELDS, WITH AT LEAST THE LAST 5 REPAIRS AT THIS SHOP COMPLETED AS SUCH. I HAVE SEEN MANY REPORTS OF POLICE VEHICLES {IMPALA'S} INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS AFTER CONTROL LOSS, WHICH MAY BE RELATED TO THE MISSING AND FAULTY WELDS. THE LOUD BANGING NOISE IS METAL TO METAL CAUSED BY FLEXING OF THE ALUMINUM SUB FRAME AT THE MISSING/ FAULTY WELDS.

ON 6/29/05 I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND LOSS POWER. THE CAR WOULD ONLY GO A FEW MILES PER HOUR. IT WAS HESITATING UPON TAKE OFF. I DROVE IT HOME AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK. IT WAS PICKED UP AND TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED A CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I PAID TO HAVE A CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND ALL PARTS REPLACED. *NM
CAR SECURITY LIGHT HAS COME ON AND THEN WOULD OCCASIONALLY BE UNABLE TO START THE CAR. TURNS OUT THE PASSLOCK ANTI THEFT SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY AND WOULD COST $450 TO REPAIR. THERE SHOULD BE A WAY TO DISABLE OR BYPASS THE SYSTEM SINCE I COULD REALLY CARE LESS TO HAVE AN ANTI THEFT DEVICE FOR MY IGNITION. NOW I EITHER HAVE TO DISH OUT THE MONEY TO THE DEALERSHIP (OTHER MECHANICS SEEM UNABLE TO REPAIR THIS OF COURSE), OR TAKE THE RISK THAT THE CAR WILL NOT FAIL TO START SOMEWHERE WITH MY TWO LITTLE KIDS IN THE CAR.
TURN SIGNAL FAILURE. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS ONCE IN A WHILE. LATELY IT IS HAPPENING MORE OFTEN. IF I TURN OFF CAR AND RESTART THE TURN SIGNALS WORK AGAIN FOR A WHILE. TONIGHT WHILE DRIVING ONE HOUR HOME, I HAD TO TURN MY CAR OFF AND RESTART IT 4 TIMES SO THE TURN SIGNALS WOULD WORK AGAIN. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A DEFECT - MY CAR ONLY HAS 39,400 MILES ON IT.

CONSUMER SAID THAT SOUND DID NOT SEEM TO FOLLOW ANY APPARENT CYCLE OR SEEM TO BECOME MORE DEFINED AT ANY CERTAIN TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS, AND WAS APPARENTLY FIXED. CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. THE CONSUMER SAID THAT THIS PROBLEM HAD BEEN OCCURRING FOR THE LAST YEAR. *AK *SC *JB
