MY WIFE AND I OWN A 2004 CHEVY IMPALA WHICH WE BOUGHT NEW FROM GM. THE CAR HAS 43756 MILES ON IT, AND THE SPEEDOMETER HAS COMPLETELY QUIT WORKING. IT CURRENTLY READS 107 MPH EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF. THE OTHER GAUGES STARTED ACTING STRANGE, BUT WHEN THE KEY IS CYCLED, THEY GO BACK. HOWEVER, THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT BUDGE. THIS STARTED THE DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS, AND HAS CONTINUED EVER SINCE.*CN
ON DECEMBER 24, 2007 I WAS DRIVING MY 2004 IMPALA ALONG A HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED THE SPEEDOMETER CLIMBING HIGHER THAN THE SPEED I WAS ACTUALLY GOING, THIS CONTINUED UNTIL THE SPEEDOMETER WAS READING IN EXCESS OF 200 KMH. WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER I TURNED OFF THE CAR HOPING THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD RESET TO ZERO WHICH IT DIDN'T. I WAS UNABLE TO RESET IT UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING WHEN I TURNED THE IGNITION TO ON AND OFF ABOUT 15 TIMES BEFORE THE NEEDLE RETURNED TO ZERO. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIME NOW AND IT LOOK LIKE I WILL HAVE TO EVENTUALLY TAKE IT TO A DEALER TO HAVE REPAIRED. THERE IS APPROXIMATELY 123,000 KILOMETERS ON THE CAR. *TR
NORMAL DRIVING, SPEEDOMETER GOES TO 120MPH AND STAYS THERE. I STOPPED THE CAR AND SHUT IT OFF. TURNED IT BACK ON. STILL AT 120 MPH. CALLED THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING. I CHECKED THE WEB AND FIND ITS A COMMON PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH CHEVY WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE. DANGEROUS DRIVING WITHOUT A WORKING SPEEDOMETER! *TR
SPEEDOMETER WILL GIVE ERRADIC READINGS. I FIRST NOTICED IT ON DECEMBER 22 WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY; SPEEDOMETER SUDDENLY BEGAN TO READ 110 MPH. AT A STANDSTILL, SPEEDOMETER WAS READING 50 MPH. IT HAS DONE THIS ON TWO MORE OCCASIONS, WITH THE LAST DATE BEING JANUARY 4, 2008. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET THE SPEEDOMETER BACK TO ZERO WHILE BEING PARKED, BUT I WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN TURN THE IGNITION TO "ACC". EACH TIME I DID THIS, THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD GO DOWN APPROX. 5 MPH SO I CONTINUED TO DO THIS UNTIL THE SPEEDOMETER READ ZERO AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS PROBABLY A SENSOR ISSUE AND WHEN I DID RESEARCH, I FOUND 40 ADDTIONAL COMPLAINTS OVER THE SAME THING AND WAS READING ABOUT A POTENTIAL CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT IN SEATTLE DUE TO SPEEDOMETER FAILURES. *CN
2004 CHEVY IMPALA INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILURE. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL SET TO 70 AND DRIVER WAS ONLY MOVING ABOUT 40 MPH. SPEEDOMETER READ 140 MPH AND CONSUMER WAS NOT GOING THAT FAST. *KB
WHILE TRAVELING ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE SPEEDOMETER SUDDENLY STARTED CLIMBING HIGHER AND EVENTUALLY PEGGED ITS SELF. I STOPPED VEHICLE AT THE NEXT PLAZA AND TURNED ENGINE OFF. SPEEDOMETER REMAINED PEGGED WITH ENGINE OFF. I GOT HOME AND PARKED CAR. THE FOLLOWING MORNING SPEEDOMETER WAS STILL PEGGED. BY TURNING IGNITION SWITCH ON AND OFF I WAS ABLE TO BACK UP NEEDLE TO 0 POSITION. SPEEDOMETER WORKED ALRIGHT AT LOWER CITY SPEEDS UNTIL ON 12-25-07 I AGAIN GOT ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE TO GO TO MICHIGAN. AGAIN THE SPEEDOMETER STARTED CLIMBING AND WAS WELL PAST 120 MPH MARK WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION . AGAIN I WAS ABLE TO RESET SPEEDOMETER BY TURNING KEY OFF AND ON. RETURNING TO OHIO ON I75 AGAIN THE SPEEDOMETER STARTED CLIMBING AND WHEN I GOT HOME SPEEDOMETER WAS AT 120. AT THIS POINT I TOOK SEVERAL DIGITAL L PHOTOGRAPHS OF NEEDLE POSITION AND WILL LEAVE IT THERE UNTIL I TAKE VEHICLE TO LOCAL CHEVROLET CAR DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHAT THE OUTCOME WILL BE. VEHICLE NOW ONLY HAS 23,900 MILES ON IT. *TR
SPEEDOMETER IS BROKEN AND THE SAFETY I PUT MYSELF IN EVERYDAY BECAUSE CHEVY CANT REPLACE THE SPEEDOMETER THAT SHOULD WORK FOR A LIFETIME. CHEVY CARES MORE ABOUT THERE PROFIT THEN THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS THEN THEY WONDER WHY TOYOTA IS THE #1 SELLER OF CARS BECAUSE THEY TAKE CARE OF THEIR PROBLEMS I WILL NEVER BUY A AMERICAN CAR. *TR
SPEEDOMETER STOPPED FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. ERRATIC READINGS RANGING FROM -50 TO 140MPH. DOESN'T MATTER IF THE CAR IS IDLING OR CRUISING DOWN THE HIGHWAY - THE SPEEDOMETER IS ALWAYS DANCING TO IT'S OWN TUNE! SUSPECTING THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE WILL BE NEXT, AS IT VARIES GREATLY WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I SUSPECT THIS IS NOT NORMAL OR ACCURATE. I ENCOURAGE ALL OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM TO REPORT IT HERE. THESE ARE THE FOLKS WHO CAN HELP US GET A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL, AND HAVE THE DEFECT FIXED FROM GM'S POCKET - NOT YOUR OWN. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE TEMPERATURE FOR THE ENGINE FAILED. ONE MONTH LATER, THE SPEEDOMETER FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY A DEALER. THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,000.
THE SPEEDOMETER AND OTHER GAUGES ON MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WENT HAYWIRE. THEN THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY. THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAD TO BE REPLACED. *TR

LIKE MANY IMPALA OWNERS BEFORE ME, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ON MY 2004 IMPALA HAS FAILED AFTER 3 1/2 YEARS AND 60,000 MILES. IT STARTED OUT WITH THE SPEEDOMETER AND THEN THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WENT. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AS YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO TELL HOW FAST YOU ARE GOING OR IF YOUR CAR IS GOING TO OVERHEAT. VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT A GM DEALER AND GMC WAS CONTACTED AND REFUSED TO COVER THE COST. *CN
SPEEDOMETER AND TEMP GAUGE STICKING AND WILL NOT RESET - READING EXCESSIVE SPEED OR TEMPS. *TR
MY INSTRUMENT PANEL ALSO WENT OUT IN WINTER OF 2007. CALLED GM DIRECTLY WHO REFUSED TO HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM. MY FATHER IN LAW OWNS AN AVALANCHE AND RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE FOR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FOR HIS TRUCK AND OTHER LARGE SUV'S THAT ARE MADE BY CHEVROLET. THE YEARS COVERED INCLUDED 2004. IF GM KNOWS THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANELS WERE BAD FOR OTHER MODELS, WHY HAVEN'T THEY BEEN RECALLED FOR THE IMPALAS. MY CAR DID THE SAME THING; DRIVING APPROX 40 MPH AND CAR READ 75 MPH. THE SPEEDOMETER READ 120 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY THAT DAY WHEN CARS WERE FLYING BY ME. THIS IS MOST DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. UNFORTUNATELY, GM SEEMS TO BE WAITING FOR SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH BEFORE RECALLING THE BAD PARTS. THIS GOES ALONG WITH THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFTS BEING BAD ALSO. WHAT A JOKE!! I TOO WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER AMERICAN MADE CAR AS LONG AS I AM ABLE TO DRIVE. I HAD TO TAKE GM TO COURT OVER MY CAR DUE TO THE CAR BEING IN THE SHOP APPROX. 25 TIMES FOR REPAIRS BEFORE IT WAS 4 YEARS OLD. MY WHOLE CAR HAS BASICALLY BEEN REPLACED (INCLUDING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND STEERING COLUMN SHAFT) EXCEPT FOR THE SLIPPING TRANSMISSION NOW. I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF MY CAR AS I HAVE THE INDY MOTOR SPEEDWAY SS. PAID A LOT OF $$ FOR NOTHING. IT'S NO WONDER GM IS GOING UNDER. THEIR CARS ARE JUNK AND THEY DON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. WHAT A SHAME. HOPEFULLY NO ONE HAS SERIOUS INJURY DUE TO ALL THE SAFETY FAILURES WITH THESE CARS. *TR
MY SON'S 2004 IMPALA FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR IS LEAKING FUEL. IT SEAMS TO BE COMING OUT OF THE TOP PART OF REGULATOR. THIS IS LOCATED ABOVE THE ENGINE AD IS A FIRE HAZARD WE HAVE BEEN SMELLING GAS FORA YAER AND THE LEAK HAS GOTTEN BIG ENOUGH FOR US TO FIND. *TR
2004 CHEVY IMPALA--BOTH TURN SIGNALS AND HAZARD LIGHTS STOP FLASHING. TRIED TO REPLACE FUSES, BUT ALL STILL GOOD. COULD NOT LOCATE A TURN SIGNAL RELAY IN THE FUSE BOX. SPOKE TO A MECHANIC WHO SAID IT DIDN'T MAKE SINCE THAT THERE WAS NO RELAY IN THE FUSE PANEL. LOOKED UP THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH PART AND IT WAS ON BACK ORDER. THE PART ALONE WAS OVER $300.00. MECHANIC ALSO STATED IT DID NOT MAKE SINCE THAT IT WOULD BE THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH WHEN ALL OTHER COMPONENTS ON THE TURN SIGNAL ARM (WINDSHIELD WIPERS, CRUISE CONTROL, ETC.) STILL WORKED. UNABLE TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP SINCE IT WAS A SUNDAY. LOOKED UP OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON TOPIX.COM AND FOUND SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. WAS ADVISED TO TURN ON AND OFF THE HAZARD SEVERAL TIMES. IN DOING SO (ABOUT 100 TIMES) THE SIGNALS STARTED WORKING. THEREFORE, IT DOESN'T SEEM AS IF THIS IS A TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ISSUE, BUT A HAZARD SWITCH ISSUE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF DRIVING AND YOUR TURN SIGNALS STOP WORKING WHICH COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
2004 CHEVROLET IMPALA LS WITH APPROX 82,000 MILES. NOTICED TWO WEEKS AGO THAT THE SPEEDOMETER GAUGE IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. IT WILL GO FROM 20 TO 120 WITH THE ACTUAL SPEED NOT CHANGING. VERY DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY AND WITH OUR ICE AND SNOW. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST I AM ACTUALLY GOING. I HAVE READ ABOUT SEVERAL OTHER INDIVIDUALS HAVING THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH THE 2004 IMPALA'S. THERE IS NO RECALL TO FIX THE PROBLEM, AND THE GM DEALERS WANT APPROXIMATELY $400 DOLLARS TO FIX THIS. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM, AND I BELIEVE THAT AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE DONE ON THE 2004 IMPALA TO SHOW THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT GM SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE IDLING, THE SPEEDOMETER MALFUNCTIONED AND INDICATED 30 MPH. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,100 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,560. UPDATED 02-19-08 *BF UPDATED 02/19/08 *TR
WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER START UP AT LOW SPEEDS (LESS THAN 20MPH) THE ANTILOCK BRAKES KICK IN WHEN NOT NEEDED. FOR ABOUT 2-3 SECONDS, THERE IS EXTREMELY REDUCED BRAKING ABILITY. AFTER THIS INITIAL TIME PERIOD, THE WHOLE ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN AND ALSO TURNS OFF THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM. ONCE THE SHUTDOWN HAS TAKEN PLACE, THE CAR'S BRAKING SYSTEM FUNCTIONS AS IF THERE WAS NO ANTILOCK BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP WHICH INDICATED THAT THE WHEEL SENSOR WAS BAD AND COULD BE REPLACED FOR $600.00. ALSO WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, NOTICED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WAS STUCK AT 65MPH, REGARDLESS OF SPEED. WHEN TURNED OFF, THE VEHICLE STILL READ 65MPH. WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE PROPER SPEED. NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE RESET THE SPEED 5MPH LOWER EACH TIME THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS MOVED FROM OFF TO ON. MULTIPLE CYCLES OF TURNING THE IGNITION SWITCH ON AND OFF FINALLY RESET THE SPEEDOMETER TO 0MPH. DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS ONLY A TEMPORARY FIX FOR A PROBLEM THAT WILL PROBABLY GET WORSE. ALTHOUGH NOT A SERIOUS ISSUE, THE TACHOMETER DOES THE SAME THING. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, NOTICED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WAS STUCK AT 65MPH, REGARDLESS OF SPEED. WHEN TURNED OFF, THE VEHICLE STILL READ 65MPH. WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE PROPER SPEED. NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE RESET THE SPEED 5MPH LOWER EACH TIME THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS MOVED FROM OFF TO ON. MULTIPLE CYCLES OF TURNING THE IGNITION SWITCH ON AND OFF FINALLY RESET THE SPEEDOMETER TO 0MPH. DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS ONLY A TEMPORARY FIX FOR A PROBLEM THAT WILL PROBABLY GET WORSE. WAS DRIVING NORMALLY AND THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE DROPPED FROM THE 12 O'CLOCK POSITION TO THE 6 O'CLOCK POSITION. IT NOW OPERATES SPORADICALLY AND IS USUALLY 10-15 MILES OFF. WORKING ON GETTING THE PROBLEM REPAIRED. *TR
WE HAVE A 2004 CHEVROLET IMPALA, WHICH IS A PIECE OF CRAP. WE PURCHASED THIS CAR USED, IT HAD 26,000 MILES ON IT. I FILED A COMPLAINT W/ CHEVY ON PHONE NUMBER 866-790-5700. OUR CASE # IS 71-578092134. THEY WERE NO HELP, SINCE OUR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. OUR TRACTION SYSTEM & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON. THE TRACTION SYSTEM SHUT OFF & WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON. IT ALSO KNOCKED OFF THE ABS SYSTEM. NOT SAFE. WE TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, THE REPAIRS WERE A NEW THERMOSTAT & THERMOSTAT SENSOR, & DRIVERS SIDE REAR HUB BEARING. THE COST WAS $500.00, THE DEALERSHIP WANTED @1100.00!!!!!!! FOR THE SAME REPAIRS. THE REPAIR SHOP STATED TO ME THAT THEY HAVE APPROXIMATELY 5-10 IMPALAS A WEEK IN THEIR SHOP FOR THE SAME REPAIR!!! IT APPEARS GM SCREWED UP. WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. WE ALSO OWN A 1995 GMC 1500 SIERRA, HAVE NOT HAD TO FIX ANYTHING AS MAJOR AS THE IMPALA. GM'S WARRANTY IS THE WORST IN THE BUSINESS. GM WAS NO HELP AT ALL. *TR
THE SPEEDOMETER STARTED GETTING STUCK ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO. FOR ABOUT EIGHT MONTHS I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL I HEAR A NOISE IN THE FRONT OF THE CAR, LIKE A KNOCK OR SOMETHING. ALSO WITHIN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS I HAVE ALSO SMELLED GAS WHEN I FIRST START THE CAR , MY HUSBAND COULD NOT SEE ANY LEAKAGE OR ANYTHING UNTIL LAST WEEK. IT WAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL REGULATOR VALVE. NOW THE TRANSMISSION IS STARTING TO SHIFT HARD SOMETIMES. I HAVEN'T HAD THE MONEY TO GET IT ALL CHECKED OUT BY THE MANUFACTURER BUT I WAS WONDERING IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY COMPLAINTS ON ANY OF THESE THINGS. ALSO I CAN HEAR A WHISTLING SOUND WHEN I PRESS THE ACCELERATOR. AND MY HUSBAND JUST INFORMED ME THAT HE BOUGHT A REGULATOR VALVE FOR IT AND SOME O RINGS BECAUSE SOMETHING IS LEAKING ANTIFREEZE SLIGHTLY. CAN YOU HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH AND DECELERATING, THE CONTACT OBSERVED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WAS PROVIDING INACCURATE READINGS. THE FAILURE OCCURS FREQUENTLY AND WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. IN ADDITION, THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WHEN MAKING A TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT NO MALFUNCTIONS WERE FOUND WITH THE STEERING WHEEL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
STEERING RACK FAILURE. CAUSING STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK UP. *TR
I PURCHASED A NEW 2004 CHEVY IMPALA IN APRIL OF 2004. IN NOVEMBER 2007, ONE MORNING I NOTICED THAT I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES PER HOUR, THINKING "IT SURE DOESN'T FEEL THAT FAST." AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKE I OBSERVED THE SPEEDOMETER DROP ONLY TO ABOUT 50 MPH. LATER THAT DAY I FOUND THAT THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE SPEEDOMETER BACK TO ZERO WAS TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND RESTART IT SEVERAL TIMES AS THE NEEDLE WOULD DROP ABOUT 10 MPH EACH TIME. ONCE AT ZERO THE SPEEDOMETER APPEARED TO READ CORRECTLY. OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS THE PROBLEM CONTINUED THOUGH IT WAS REMARKABLY WORSE THE COLDER THE CAR WAS. BY NOW, JANUARY 08 THE SPEEDOMETER HAS STOPPED READING ACCURATELY ALTOGETHER AND HAS PARKED ITSELF AT THE 360 DEGREE MARK. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ADDRESSED IN CHEVY AND CADILLAC TRUCKS BUT GM HAS BEEN SLOW TO ISSUE ANY SPECIAL POLICIES OR RECALLS REGARDING THE CARS. THE PARTS (SPECIFICALLY FAULTY STEPPER MOTORS MANUFACTURED BY DELPHI) BY ALL ACCOUNTS I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RESEARCH HOWEVER ARE THE SAME REGARDLESS OF MODEL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE PRIMARILY AS WELL AS A LEGAL LIABILITY. BESIDES THIS, THE ISSUE IS CERTAINLY A CUSTOMER RELATIONS NIGHTMARE. I ALONE HAVE VIEWED SEVERAL HUNDRED COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE. CHEVROLET MUST ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY WITH A FULL REPLACEMENT OF PARTS AND COMPLETE WARRANTY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING WITH HI BEAMS ON THE HEADLIGHTS WILL REPEATEDLY SHUT COMPLETELY OFF. I HAVE TO MOVE THE HI/LOW BEAM LEVER AND THE LOW BEAMS WILL COME ON. THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS SINCE I LIVE ON UN-LIT COUNTRY ROADS. THIS IN NOT AN OCCASIONAL PROBLEM, IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME THE LIGHTS ARE ON. *TR

AFTER PURCHASING VEHICLE TOOK IT BACK TO HAVE STEERING CHECKED BECAUSE IT DID NOT FEEL OR SOUND RIGHT WHEN DOING A BRAKING AND TURNING STEERING WHEEL COMBINATION. MENTIONED THE NHTSA RECALL OF 2004 IMPALA. WAS TOLD DID NOT INVOLVE SS. ON THIS OCCASION WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE, UNABLE TO STEER PROPERLY, COULD NOT CONTROL VEHICLE. THE CLUSTER IN THE DASH HAD WENT OUT WHICH MAKES THE SPEEDOMETER QUIT WORKING CAUSING A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
1. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE WHEN I NOTICED THE SPEEDOMETER BEGAN TO REFLECT READINGS IN EXCESS OF THE ACTUAL SPEED I WAS DRIVING, E.G., REGISTERING BEYOND 120 MPH (THE NEEDLE WOULD PASS THAT MARK AND CONTINUE MOVING) WHEN THE CAR'S ACTUAL SPEED WAS PROBABLY LESS THAN 50 MPH. UPON STOPPING THE VEHICLE, THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD REGISTER MPH IN EXCESS OF ZERO (E.G., 80 MPH). THE NEEDLE WOULD NOT RETURN TO ZERO EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF. 2. THE FAILURE OF THE SPEEDOMETER CAUSED ME TO NOT KNOW THE ACTUAL SPEED I WAS DRIVING, WHICH PLACED ME IN JEOPARDY OF DRIVING SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER THAN THE POSTED SPEED FOR A GIVEN STRETCH OF ROAD. I HAD TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER FOR REPAIR. 3. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER INVOICE, THE DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT "REMOVED, REPLACED AND SETUP (THE) IP CLUSTER ASSEMBLY. THE REPLACED PART WAS NOT MADE AVAILABLE TO ME. 4. GENERAL MOTORS IS EXPERIENCING THIS SAME TYPE OF SPEEDOMETER CLUSTER FAILURE ON VARIOUS OTHER GM MODELS BEGINNING WITH MODEL YEARS 2003 AND LATER. GM HAS SPECIAL POLICY COVERAGE FOR CERTAIN OF ITS MODELS WITH THIS PROBLEM, BUT NOT FOR ALL MODELS. MY VEHICLE IS A 2004 CHEVROLET IMPALA WHICH HAD 57,355 MILES ON IT WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURRED. I WAS ADVISED BY GM THAT, "...THE SPECIAL COVERAGE...DO ES NOT INCLUDE YOUR VEHICLE..." AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO BEAR ANY EXPENSE I INCURRED FOR THE SERVICE PERFORMED BY THE DEALER. *TR
SPEEDOMETER IS BURNING THE NEEDLE AT THE 3RD GEAR MARK WHILE DRIVING. WHILE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT YESTERDAY (12/08/07), THE SPEEDOMETER WAS READING 112 MPH, SITTING STILL!! I CANNOT GET THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE TO SET AT 0 ANYMORE. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF TEACHING MY 15 1/2 YEAR OLD SON TO DRIVE AND THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE. I AM CONSTANTLY MAKING HIM PULL OVER AND SWITCHING SEATS WITH ME AS HE CANNOT GET A SPEEDING TICKET ON HIS PERMIT. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GUESS AT YOUR SPEED, EVEN WITH THE OTHER TRAFFIC FLOW AND WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS. I HAVE HAD THE CAR CHECKED AND THE RESULT IS THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IS BAD, WITH AN ESTIMATE TO FIX IT THAT IS UNREASONABLY HIGH. ADDITIONALLY, GM KNOWS THIS IS AN ISSUE, SO THEY SHOULD RECALL AND FIX THESE SINCE THEY ORDERED AN ASSEMBLY CHANGE ON THEM. *TR
GAS GAUGE ERRATIC FALSE READINGS GM MECHANIC TOLD ME FUEL LEVEL SENSOR WAS BAD TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS LATER IT STILL IS WRONG. THAN I PAY DEALER ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS SO THEY CAN TELL ME I NEED A 500 DOLLAR GAUGE CLUSTER WHICH THEY SAID WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. THAT WAS AFTER I WAS TOLD FUEL SENSOR WAS COMMON PROBLEM TOO. I HAVE SEEN AND READ OF MANY COMPLAINTS LIKE THIS IN DIFFERENT AUTOMOTIVE COMPLAINT SITES. *TR

I BOUGHT A USED 2004 CHEVROLET IMPALA AND OCTOBER 19, 2007 AND A FEW MONTHS AFTER I HAD THE VEHICLE THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING. MY SPEED ODOMETER SAID I WAS DOING FORTY WHEN I GOT PULLED OVER FOR DOING 55MPH, AND AS I PULLED OFF AND LOOKED AT THE SPEEDOMETER IT WAS STUCK AT 40MPH. ALSO THE LIGHTS GO OUT AT ANY GIVEN TIME ON THEIR OWN. I WAS DRIVING HOME ONE NIGHT AND MY HEAD LIGHTS SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF A CURVE AND I HIT THE BRAKES AND SLID OFF THE ROAD. SHE SMELLED GASOLINE FOR OVER A MONTH AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC. SHE THOUGHT THE FAILURE HAD BEEN REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE ODOR REMAINED. THE CONTACT THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A GENERAL MOTORS DEALER AND THEY MADE THE REPAIR. THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL ON THE VEHICLE, BUT THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE POWERTRAIN WAS UNKNOWN AS WELL. DRIVING ON A TRIP AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY SPEEDOMETER MPH INDICATOR JUMPER TO 90 MPH AS I WAS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT. WHEN I PROCEEDED FORWARD THE INDICATOR NEEDLE RESET YOU 90 MPH AND THIS RESET CONTINUED UNTIL IT WAS POINTING STRAIGHT DOWN. IT DID NOT RESET AFTER TURNING THE IGNITION OFF AND ON. I HAD NO IDEA HOW FAST MY VEHICLE WAS GOING AFTER THAT. I WENT TO A WEB SITE FOR AUTO TROUBLES AND FOUND 72 REPORTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM WITH GM SPEEDOMETERS. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL SINCE A NONFUNCTIONAL SPEEDOMETER IS A SAFETY HAZARD. PS - OTHER GM MODELS ALSO HAVE REPORTS OF THIS MALFUNCTIONING SPEEDOMETERS. GM WANT $500 TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SPEEDOMETER, WHEN A SIMPLE CAPACITOR FIX IS ALL THAT IS REQUIRED. A TEMP FIX WORKS FOR A FEW WEEKS, THEY IT HAPPENS AGAIN AND GM SAID IF YOU REPLACE THE SPEEDOMETER AND IT HAPPENS AGAIN, THEN IT COSTS ANOTHER $500 TO REPLACE THE REPLACEMENT? SHE WAS TRAVELING AT WHAT THE SPEEDOMETER READ AS 30 MPH AROUND A CURB, BUT SHE WAS ACTUALLY TRAVELING MUCH FASTER AND ALMOST STRUCK THE CURB. THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE FOR FREE BECAUSE IT IS NOT UNDER A RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
CHEVY 2004 IMPALA: SPEED AND TEMP GAUGE WERE READING ERRATICALLY AND AT TIMES STAYED AT A PARTICULAR SPEED AND TEMP WHICH WERE NOT ACCURATE. GAUGE CLUSTER WAS CHANGED OUT ACCORDING TO A DEALERSHIP. WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY REALLY DID. HAD VEHICLE IN TO SAME DEALERSHIP AGAIN FOR INTERMEDIATE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT FOR A KNOCKING SOUND. DEALERSHIP LUBRICATED SHAFT. TO ME, IF SOMETHING IS MAKING NOISE, THIS MEANS THERE IS CONTACT WITH AT LEAST TWO COMPONENTS CAUSING WEAR. I BELIEVE THE SHAFT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED OUT. ALL PROBLEMS HAVE NOT RETURNED, YET. NO ACCIDENTS OR INJURIES OR SPEEDING TICKETS EITHER, THANK GOD. I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THE DEALERSHIP OR THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS VEHICLE WOULD NOT PICK UP THE COST OF A SPEEDING TICKET OR ASSOCIATED COSTS DUE TO AN INJURY OR DEATH. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS WHEN IS SOMEONE GOING TO STEP UP AND PUT SOME REAL HEAT ON THE AUTO INDUSTRY. DOES IT TAKE A DEATH OF A FELLOW CITIZEN TO TAKE ACTION? LAST WINTER I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON A DARK MORNING AND WITHOUT WARNING MY HEADLIGHTS WENT TOTALLY OUT. I KEPT FLIPPING MY HEADLIGHT SWITCH OFF AND ON AND MY DIMMER SWITCH UNTIL THEY CAME BACK ON. I CONTINUED DOWN THE ROAD AND IT HAPPENED REPEATEDLY UNTIL I GOT TO WORK. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY REPLACED A COMPUTER MODULE. I DIDN'T THINK TO MUCH ABOUT IT UNTIL THIS MORNING WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. IT HAS BEEN COOL OR COLD OUT BOTH TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED SO I DON'T KNOW IF IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH TEMPERATURE OR NOT.
