IN 2002, I BOUGHT A 2002 CHEVY MALIBU. SINCE THEN IT'S BEEN GIVING ME A LOT OF PROBLEMS. THE FIRST PROBLEM WAS THE WATER FOUND IN BOTH TAIL LIGHTS; THIS WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THEN THERE WAS WATER COMING IN THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW, THE BRAKES, AND THE TORQUE NEEDING TO BE REPROGRAMMED. THEN IT WAS THE HEADLIGHTS GOING OUT AND I GOT THEM REPLACED AT A WALMART; MIND YOU, SINCE THE 1ST PROBLEM, NONE OF THIS HAS BEEN UNDER WARRANTY. NOW IT'S THE AIRBAG GONE BAD, COOLING SYSTEM GONE BAD, AND THE BRAKES AGAIN, ALONG WITH A FUEL PUMP. THE CALIPERS HAVE TO BE REPLACED STILL, THE AIRBAG NEEDS TO BE CHECKED OUT, AND THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW TO DIAGNOSE WHAT IS WRONG WITHIN THE FUELING SYSTEM THAT MAKES THE CAR NOT START. OH! I ALMOST FORGOT, I PURCHASED A BATTERY 2 WEEKS AGO BECAUSE THAT WENT OUT. I ALWAYS STAY ON TOP OF MY SERVICE FOR THE CAR. THIS CAR IS 3 YEARS OLD AND I BOUGHT IT NEW OFF THE LOT. IT SUCKS!
TURN SIGNALS STOP WORKING (OR WON'T WORK AT ALL AFTER FIRST STARTING THE CAR). THIS STARTED HAPPENING THE END OF JULY AND HAPPENS NUMEROUS TIMES EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE CAR. SO FAR, ACTIVATING/DEACTIVATING THE HAZARD SWITCH WHILE KEEPING THE TURN SIGNALS ON HAS EVENTUALLY RESTORED THEIR USE. I COMMUTE 50 MILES EACH WAY TO WORK EVERY DAY, MOST OF IT ON I-85 & 285 IN ATLANTA. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT IS OBVIOUSLY CAUSED BY A PERVASIVE PROBLEM SINCE THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS SAME FAILURE. MY MECHANIC HAS REPLACED MY TURN SIGNAL SWITCH TWICE AND HAS BEEN ASSURED BY HIS PARTS SOURCE THAT THIS (3RD) TIME HE WILL BE PROVIDED A SWITCH WITHOUT THE DEFECT. SO FAR I HAVE PAID $304.98 AND SHOULD BE REIMBURSED BY GM. *JB
ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAVE AN INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF THE TURN SIGNALS TO OPERATE. I HAVE LOOKED ON THIS WEBSITE AND HAVE NOTICED THERE IS A RECALL OF MODELS OF THIS VEHICLE UP TO 2001. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT CHEVROLET IS NOT INCLUDING THE 2002 MODELS ON THE RECALL. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER CONSUMERS ALSO. SO WHY IS CHEVROLET NOT BEING FORCED TO INCLUDE 2002 MODELS WHEN THERE IS OBVIOUSLY THE SAME PROBLEM?*JB
2002 CHEVROLET MALIBU 6 CYLINDER. FRONT STRUTS WERE NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT (AT MY COST). CAR MILEAGE WAS APPX 23K. MY NEIGHBOR HAS A 2004 MALIBU WITH 18K. FRONT STRUTS WERE DEFECTIVE AND REPLACED BY DEALER. MY MECHANIC EXPRESSED SURPRISED THAT STRUTS SHOULD "GO BAD" ON CARS WITH SUCH RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE. *NM
FAILURE OF TURN SIGNALS ON 2002 CHEVY MALIBU PROBABLY DUE TO FAULTY HAZARD SWITCH
BLINKERS/SIGNALS DO NOT WORK, HAZARD SWITCH REPLACEMENT
HAZARD SWITCH HAS STOPPED WORKING OR WORKS ONLY SOMETIMES. CAUSES THE BLINKERS AND THE HAZARD LIGHTS NOT TO WORK, CAUSING A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT. *NM
I BOUGHT MY CHEVROLET 2002 MALIBU BRAND NEW AND HAVE OWNED IT FOR THREE YEARS, JUST TWO MONTHS AGO IT STARTED HAVING INTERMITTENT TURN SIGNAL PROBLEMS. I HAVE TRIED LITTLE THINGS LIKE MANUALLY USING TURN SIGNALS AND TURNING THEM OFF PRIOR TO TURN COMPLETION, RESTARTING THE CAR, AND USING MY HAZZARD LIGHTS TO TRIGGER THE TURN SIGNALS TO WORK. SOMETIMES THESE THINGS WILL WORK MOMENTARILY, OTHER TIMES THEY HAVE NO EFFECT. ALSO I AM NOTICING MY HAZARD LIGHTS DO NOT ALWAYS WORK, AND SOMETIMES THEY WILL INTERRUPT MY TURN SIGNAL FROM WORKING AND OTHER TIMES MY TURN SIGNAL WILL CAUSE THE HAZARD LIGHTS TO TURN OFF! THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS FOR ME, IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT HELP ME, MY CAR IS JUST PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THEY WANT TO TEST IT FOR A RATHER LARGE FEE. ALTHOUGH MY RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM HAS TOLD ME THAT GM HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM IN 2002, BUT POSSIBLY IN 2001, AND 2000 MODELS. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED, AND WILL NOT OWN A CHEVY AGAIN.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THROUGH ONLINE RESEARCH, THE CONTACT FOUND A RECALL FOR HER VEHICLE. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY STATED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL FOR THE EXTERIOR LIGHTING, WHICH WAS THE SAME FAILURE THE CONTACT WAS EXPERIENCING. THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 23,000.
ON 06-12-2005 MY BLINKERS STARTED WORKING INTERMITTANTLY. THEY MAY NOT WORK FOR A FEW MINUTES OR FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME AND WITH NO WARNING. THEY DON'T WORK RIGHT AWAY EVEN IF YOU RESTART THE VEHICLE. I'VE SAW THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH PREVIOUS MODELS. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM TO BE OVER LOOKED ESPECIALLY IF WE TRAVEL. IT IS A DANGER IN HIGH TRAFFIC DRIVING.
THE SITUATION ARISES WITH NO PRIOR WARNINGS, I INSERT MY ORIGINAL GM KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH TO START MY 2002 CHEVROLET MALIBU AND THE ELECTRONIC ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM GOES INTO THEFT MODE (AS IF I AM STEALING MY OWN CAR). THE THEFT SYSTEM LIGHT ON THE DASH STARTS FLASHING AND THE CAR WILL NOT START. THE ENGINE TURNS OVER BUT WILL NOT START. I HAVE TO LEAVE THE CAR SWITCHED ON FOR 10 MINUTES (WHILE DRAINING THE BATTERY) UNTIL THE THEFT SYSTEM LIGHT QUITS FLASHING AND STAYS ON STEADY. AT THAT POINT I MUST TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH TO OFF AND THEN TRY STARTING THE CAR AGAIN. TO DATE IT ALWAYS STARTS AFTER THE 10-MINUTE DELAY AND RETRY. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE RANDOM IN NATURE AND HAS HAPPENED TO ME AS OFTEN AS THREE (3) TIMES IN ONE DAY. IT HAS MADE ME LATE FOR WORK, APPOINTMENTS AND STRANDED AT THE GAS PUMP (INCONVENIENCING OTHERS). I AM FORTUNATE THAT I HAVEN'T HAD ANY DIRE EMERGENCIES (YET) IN WHICH THE CAR HAS LEFT ME STALLED. I HAVE NOT TRIED TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AS I CANNOT AFFORD THE COST AND IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING FROM OTHERS' EXPERIENCES THAT IT WILL EVENTUALLY HAPPEN WITH THE NEW PARTS. THIS IS A GENERAL MOTORS DEFECTIVE SYSTEM AND A POOR DESIGN THAT HAS BEEN UNLEASHED ON THE BUYING PUBLIC. APPARENTLY GENERAL MOTORS HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR FAULTY ENGINEERING. MEANWHILE MANY, MANY PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF HAVE UNKNOWINGLY PURCHASED GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLES WITH THESE SYSTEMS AND CONTINUE TO HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE INCONVENIENCE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS RESULTS OF THEIR POOR ENGINEERING. *TR
WITHOUT WARNING THE TURN SIGNALS STOP OPERATING. BY HITTING THE HAZARD LIGHT SWITCH NUMEROUS TIME THE TURN FUNCTION RETURNS. THIS HAS HAPPENED PERIODICALLY DURING THE LAST FOUR MONTHS. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE KEY EJECTED FROM THE IGNITION WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE DOG HOUSE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE ELECTRICAL FAILURE WAS NOT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000.
DT: FRONT LOADED CALIPERS ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY. INBOARD PADS ARE WORN AT 100 PERCENT, AND THE OUTBOARD ARE WORN AT 50 PERCENT.TIRES WERE SQUEAKING WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED, AND THEN A CONSTANT SQUEEK WHILE DRIVING. CONTINUED DRIVING MAKES IT WORSE. CALLER IS CONCERNED ABOUT NOT GETTING A WARNING LIGHT TO TELL HER SHE HAS A PROBLEM. CALLER WAS TOLD A WARNING LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON FOR THE BRAKE PADS BEING WORN. IF CALIPER IS NOT FIXED THE PADS WILL BE WORN AT SAME RATE. TIRES PLUS TOLD HER THIS. DEALER TOLD CALLER THEY NEVER HEARD OF CALIPERS CAUSING BRAKE PAD PROBLEMS. MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN CONTACTED YET. *AK
MY VEHICLE IS A 2002 MALIBU 1. EXTERIOR TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS DO NOT LIGHT UP EVEN THOUGHT THE DASH SIGNAL IS INDICATING THAT THEY ARE BLINKING AND DASHBOARD TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS DO NOT LIGHT UP AT ALL 2. HAD NO IDEA IF I WAS SIGNALING TO OTHER MOTORISTS MY INTENTION TO TURN - STILL DO NOT KNOW IF SIGNALS ARE WORKING 3. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO CHEVROLET SERVICE - THEY WORKED ON IT FOR HOURS CHARGING ME BY THE HOUR AND COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. *NM
STOP AT POSTOFFICE CAR WOULD NOT START, SECOND TIME AT HOME AND THE SAME THING HAPPEN, THIRD TIME WHILE DRIVING HOME THE CAR STOPPED AND WOULD NOT START, THE FIRST TWO TIME I TOOK IT TO DEALER AN WAS TOLD IT WAS THE IGINATION PROLBLEM AND IT WAS FIXED AND THEN IT HAPPEN AGAIN, HAD THE CAR IN THE DEALER SERVICES CENTER FOR 10 DAYS AN WAS TOLD IT WAS FUEL PUMP AND CHARGED 300.00 TO FIX, CAR STALLED WHEN THE SERVICE MANAGE WAS BRING IT OUT TO ME AND WOULD NOT START FOR THEM, KEEP THE THE FOR ANOTHER 8 DAYS AND WAS TOLD IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND WAS FIXED
DT: CONSUMER STATED: HAD A FIRE UNDER THE HOOD, FUEL EVAPORATION HOSE WHICH MELTED CAUSED THE FIRE. CHEVROLET STATED HOSES BROKE. NO FOR WARNING, FOUND OUT WHEN CATALYTIC CONVERTER WENT BAD, AND SENSORS BURNT. ANY THING IN THE STREAM OF THAT WAS BURNT OR MELTED.*AK
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET, TURN SIGNALS ARE WORKING IMPROPERLY. CONSUMER CAN HEAR THE TURN SIGNAL, LIKE IT IS BLINKING, BUT SOMETIMES IT WILL NOT LIGHT UP ON THE INSIDE. IF IT DOES NOT LIGHT UP ON THE INSIDE THEN IT IS NOT LIGHTING UP FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE BULBS HAVE BEEN CHANGED, AND THIS WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. A COUPLE OF CONTACT'S FRIENDS OWN CHEVROLET CARS AND AT ONE POINT AND TIME THIS HAPPENED TO THEM AS WELL. THE PROBLEM RECURRED, SO SHE IS GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR REPAIRS. AOF MONTHS AGO THE PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR AS OFTEN AS CURRENTLY. *AK *TT
THE TURN SIGNAL MALFUNCTIONS ON MY 2002 CHEVROLET MALIBU, WHICH LEADS TO TOTAL FAILURE OF THE TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS AND THE INDICATOR ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THESE INCIDENTS OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING. THEY DO NOT FLICKER. THEY JUST STOP WORKING AND THEN WORK WITHOUT PROBLEM. THE INCIDENTS ARE RANDOM. I WILL BE REPLACING THE TURN SIGNAL WHEN I HAVE THE CAR SERVICED LATER THIS MONTH . *JB

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT IN A DIFFERENT OCCASION THE ENGINE STALLED TWICE AND RESTARTED IMMEDIATELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHERE THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED EACH TIME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. DT: HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE LEFT AND RIGHT TURN SIGNALS, THEY WORK INTERMITTENTLY. THIS STARTED HAPPENING ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO AROUND APRIL 15, 2005. THIS PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE HAPPENING EVERYDAY INSTEAD OF EVERY NOW AND THEN. THE DEALER HASN'T BEEN CONTACTED. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS AND WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. *NM
THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM. THE 10 MINUTE DELAY IS NORMALLY BECAUSE THE PASSLOCK SENSOR DETECTED AN IMPROPER KEY AND WILL TIME OUT FOR 10 MINUTES EVEN IF YOU USE THE RIGHT KEY NEXT. THERE ARE VARIOUS FIXES THAT MAY OR MAY NOT WORK, INCLUDING GETTING COPIES OF YOUR KEY MADE AND TRYING A DIFFERENT KEY, REPLACEMENT OF THE SENSOR, AND A COMMON FIX IS TO REPLACE THE IGNITION CYLINDER. *TR
THE RADIO SOMETIMES WORKED AND SOMETIMES DIDN'T. AFTER 7 TRIPS, IT WAS DETERMINED THE PROBLEM WAS THE AMPLIFIER. THE RADIO WORKED FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND NOW IS DOING THE SAME THING AGAIN. ALSO, THE TURN SIGNALS WORK WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT. I HAD THE DEALER CHECK AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW SWITCH. I DID NOT GET ONE AS YET, BUT SEE WHERE OTHER OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RECALL, NOR DID THE DEALER INFORM ME OF THE ISSUE. I INITIALLY HAD TROUBLE WITH THE OUTSIDE MIRRORS BUT THEY DID REMEDY THAT. I GET SHOCKED (ELECTRICALLY) MANY TIMES WHEN I EXIT THE CAR AS DO SOME OF MY PASSENGERS.*AK
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE ENGINE INTAKE MANIFOLD ALLOWED OIL TO MIX WITH ANTIFREEZE CAUSING A LEAK. THE ANTIFREEZE MIXTURE ATE THROUGH THE GASKET WHICH RESULTED IN REPLACEMENT OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED BY AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. THIS OCCURRED TWICE IN 10,000 MILES.
MY SIGNAL LIGHT ALL OF A SUDDEN ONE DAY JUST STOPPED WORKING. NOW I HAVE FOUND THAT IF I TURN THE SIGNAL OFF BEFORE I ACTUALLY MAKE THE TURN AND IT TURNS OFF ITSELF THAT IT WILL CONTINUE WORKING. BUT IT IS VERY ANNOYING AND DANGEROUS.*AK
DT: THE VEHICLE QUIT TWICE. TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. CURRENTLY, THE VEHICLE IS IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE FIRST TIME IT QUIT WAS AROUND APRIL 1, 2005. NO ONE ELSE LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE. IT WILL TURN OVER BUT NOT START. *AK
I JUST BOUGHT A USED MALIBU LS 2002. THREE DAYS LATER MY ABS BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON AFTER I HEAR SOME VIBRATING NOISE WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER AND HE SAYS THERE IS NO PROBLEM. NOW EVERYTIME I START UP MY CAR AFTER 5 MINUTES THE ABS LIGHT COMES ON.*AK
DT: THE VEHICLE IS A 2002 CHEVROLET MALIBU, THE TURN SIGNALS AND THE HAZARD LIGHTS ONLY WORK ABOUT 25 PERCENT OF THE TIME. THIS PROBLEM STARTED AFTER 32,000 MILES AND ON AROUND THE FIRST OF APRIL OF 2005. SOMETIMES WHEN FLIPPING ON THE LIGHTS THEY WILL WORK, THEN GO OFF WITHOUT WARNING. AT TIMES AFTER FLIPPING THE LIGHTS ON THEY WILL NOT COME ON AND THEN AFTER DRIVING FURTHER THEY WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN TURN ON. THE LIGHTS WOULD HAVE TO BE IN THE ON POSITION BEFORE IT WILL COME ON. THE PROBLEM OCCURS IN ANY TYPE OF WEATHER AND UNDER ANY DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED GM AND THEY TOLD HER TO GET A DIAGNOSTIC TEST RAN ON THE VEHICLE, AND AFTERWARDS THAT THEY WOULD GET IN CONTACT WITH THE DEALER AND GET SOME KIND OF PAYMENT FIGURED OUT. THE CONSUMER HAS NOT CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AS OF NOW. THE CONSUMER STATES THAT SHE KNOWS THAT IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM THEY ARE HAVING WITH THE 2000 & 2001, AND THOSE MODELS WERE RECALLED. *AK
MY 2002 CHEVY MALIBU HAS INTERMITTENT FAILURES OF THE TURN SIGNALS AND HAZARD FLASHERS. THE PROBLEM TENDS TO EXHIBIT ITSELF MORE OFTEN IN WARM AND/OR HUMID CONDITIONS. *NM
WHILE DRIVING TO WORK THIS MORNING (AT 6:40AM 3/30/05), THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW TOTALLY (100%) SHATTERED. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 65MPH. ALL THE WINDOWS WERE ROLLED UP AND THE HEATER WAS ON. I WAS ALONE IN THE CAR AND WAS NOT INJURED IN ANY WAY. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS IN THE 40'S AND THE SUN WAS SHINING ON THE WINDOW (A CLEAR MORNING). TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, THE WINDOW WAS NOT IMPACTED BY ANY OBJECT. NO CARS OR PERSONS WERE ON MY LEFT SIDE. MOST OF THE WINDOW ENDED UP ON THE CAR'S FLOOR AND IN MY LAP. SOME PIECES REMAINED STUCK IN THE FRAME.*AK
HELLO, ON CHEVY MALABU CARS, THEY HAVE DEFECITVE INPUT MANUFOLD VALVES. ONLINE THOUSANS OF PEOPLE ARE IN FORMS THAT SHOW IT IS IN ALOT OF PEOPLE CARS AND GM IS NOT HELPING
IN JANUARY 2004, THE ?LOW COOLANT? LIGHT WENT ON. IT REQUIRED MORE COOLANT TO BE ADDED. THERE WAS NO EXTERNAL LEAKING OF THE ENGINE COOLANT. THE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER. I TOOK IT TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC AND THE CAP WAS REPLACED. THE LEAK STOPPED. IN FEB. 2005, THE ?LOW COOLANT? LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN AND AGAIN I ADDED COOLANT. TWO WEEKS LATER, THE ?LOW COOLANT? LIGHT WENT ON. THIS TIME I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A CHEVROLET DEALER. I WAS INFORMED BY THE SERVICE DEPT. OF THIS DEALER THAT MY CAR REQUIRED A NEW INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. ALSO, ENGINE COOLANT MIGHT HAVE LEAKED INTO MY ENGINE, SO THE OIL AND TRANSMISSION FLUID REQUIRED FLUSHING AND FILTERS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED ME THAT IT NEEDED TO BE DONE IMMEDIATELY OTHERWISE SERIOUS DAMAGE COULD BE DONE TO MY ENGINE. I HAD THE SERVICE DONE AS I THOUGHT CONTINUING TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE MIGHT HAVE POSED A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. SO THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND MY COST WAS $1,700.00. I PHONED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THIS REPAIR IS CONSIDERED ?NORMAL MAINTENANCE? AND I NEEDED TO COVER THE ENTIRE PRICE OF THE REPAIR. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE OF THE VEHICLE, NEGLECTING TO HAVE THE NECESSARY SERVICE COMPLETED MAY HAVE RESULTED IN PERMANENT DAMAGE LIKE THE ENGINE CEASING TO WORK. I THINK THE ENGINE CEASING WHILE IN OPERATION MIGHT CAUSE A SLIGHT SAFETY HAZARD TO MYSELF, PASSENGERS IN THE CABIN AS WELL AS OTHER VEHICLES IN THE VICINITY OF MINE.*AK
DRIVING CAR AND IT WOULD DIE. FIRST OCCURANCE WAS UNDER WARRANTY. CAR TAKEN TO DEALER. DEALER SAID FUEL PUMP WAS BAD AND REPLACED PUMP. SAME PROBLEM OCURRED OUT OF WARRANTY. NOTICED THAT SOME OF THE GAGES AND LIGHTS ON DASH ALSO QUIT WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I COULD HIT THE KEY AND THEY WOULD COME BACK ON, AND THE CAR WOULD RESTART. DEALT WITH THIS FOR ABOUT 2 YRS BECAUSE THE COST OF A NEW SWITCH WAS MORE THAN I COULD AFFORD AT THE TIME.FINNALLY DISSASSEMBLED THE IGNITION SWITCH WHEN PROBLEM GOT TOO BAD. DISCOVERED THAT GM HAD NOT USED THE NORMAL HEAVY WIPER STYLE CONTACTS THAT MOST IGNITION SWITCHES HAVE. THEY USED A PLASTIC CAM THAT PUSHES PINS THAT OPERATE VERY LIGHT SPRING STYLE CONTACTS. I FOUND THAT THE CONTACTS HAD ARCED AND WERE NOT MAKING GOOD CONTACT. USED VERY FINE EMERY CLOTH TO CLEAN CONTACTS, REASSEMBLED SWITCH, AND PROBLEM WAS SOLVED.CAR STARTS AND RUNS FINE FOR NOW, BUT AS SOON AS CONTACTS ARC ENOUGH, PROBLEM WILL RETURN. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE ARE MANY MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE DEALERSHIP IS TELLING THEM THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN THE SECURITY SYSTEM. WELL ITS NOT. ANYONE WHO HAS A MINOR AMOUNT OF MECHANICAL ABILITY CAN FIX THE PROBLEM IN ABOUT AN HOUR. BE SURE AND CONSULT A REPAIR MANUAL ON THE PROPER REMOVAL OF THE IGNITION SWITCH FROM THE DASH. ITS NOT HARD, BUT THERE IS A TRCK TO IT.*AK

I OWN AN '02 CHEVY MALIBU (SINCE 2/28/02). I HAD THE SAME HAZARD SWITCH PROBLEM W/MY '02 MALIBU THAT THE '00 & '01 MODEL YEARS HAD, AND I HAD TO PAY FOR ITS REPLACEMENT (ROUGHLY $130). I HAD NO TURN SIGNALS OR HAZARD BLINKERS UNTIL IT WAS REPLACED. GIBSON CHEVY OF SOUTH HOLLAND, IL DID THE REPLACEMENT (IT'S IN THEIR REPAIR SYSTEM). MY CAR PRESENTLY HAS A LITTLE OVER 45K MILES. GM SHOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR THE MONEY I WAS FORCED TO PAY, GIVEN THE HISTORY OF THIS DEFECT WITH PRIOR MODEL YEARS AND THE FACT THIS SITUATION HAS NOT SEEMINGLY BEEN REPLACED WITH THE '02 MODEL YEAR, EITHER. I GOT NO NOTIFICATION OF A PROBLEM WITH THIS SWITCH OR A RECALL ON IT, EITHER. I HAVE HAD TO HAVE A MODULATOR REPLACED LAST WEEK (10/5/05) WHICH AFFECTS THE BLOWER MOTOR SPEEDS IN MY VEHICLE'S VENTILATION SYSTEM ($152.00). AT SPEEDS 1, 2 AND 3, THE BLOWER MOTOR WOULDN'T WORK AT ALL. EACH SPEED STARTING WITH THE LOWEST TO THE HIGHER SPEEDS WAS GOING OUT-THE ONLY SPEEDS WORKING WERE #4, #5 & DEFROST. I WAS FORCED TO HAVE THIS REPLACED OR I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO USE THE VENTS OR DEFROSTER OR THE BLOWER ITSELF (& THE DEFROSTER), WOULD NOT WORK AT ALL. THIS REPAIR WAS DONE AT BRACH AUTO REPAIR (103RD & WESTERN AVE., CHICAGO IL -- THIS REPAIR DETAIL IS IN THEIR SYSTEM). BRACH AUTO ALSO REPLACED SOME PARTS IN MY FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM (IT WAS MALFUNCTIONING/ABOUT TO GO OUT). THE AMT I PAID FOR THIS IS ALSO IN THEIR SYSTEM. AT THAT TIME, TOM BEAULIEU INFORMED ME THAT GM HAS DISTRIBUTED A TSB RE: THIS SITUATION (WHICH I WAS NOT INFORMED OF UNTIL I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR THE MODULATOR REPAIR), & HOW I MUST RUN MY CAR W/ ONLY SHELL OR BP'S 93 OCTANE GASOLINE (EVEN THOUGH THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATES IT SHOULD/CAN RUN ON 87 OCTANE). NOW, DUE TO A POOR FUEL INJECTOR DESIGN, RUNNING ANYTHING LESS THAN 93 OCTANE IN MY '02 MALIBU WILL RESULT IN MORE COSTLY REPAIRS. (3 SEPARATE FAILURES / 3 SEPARATE PARTS ON THE SAME CAR). I WANT GM TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE MONEY I'VE SPENT FOR THESE REPAIRS.*JB

THE CONSUMER STATED THAT HER TURN SIGNALS DO NOT FUNCTION. THE CONSUMER WAS AWARE OF A RECALL FOR THE 2001 MODEL FOR THE SAME ISSUE, HOWEVER SHE OWNS A 2002 MODEL.
MY 2002 CHEVY MALIBU (3 YRS OLD, JUST OUR OF FACTORY WARRANTY) WITH 33,000 MILES HAD THE FRONT LEFT BRAKE SEIZE UP. I LIMPED IT TO THE DEALER, HALF A MILE AWAY FROM MY HOUSE. BY THE TIME I GOT THERE, THE FRONT LEFT BRAKES WERE SMOKING. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CALIPER SEIZED UP BECAUSE THE PADS WERE TOO WORN. ALSO THAT THE PADS ON THE LEFT WERE WORN ALSO. THE CHEVY DEALER SAID I NEEDED TO HAVE ROTORS TURNED ON BOTH WHEELS, CALIPERS REPLACED ON BOTH WHEELS, AND NEW PADS & CALIPER BOLTS. TOTAL COST $784 NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT I PAID $1250 FOR WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. THE WEAR INDICATORS GAVE VERY LITTLE WARNING THAT THE BRAKES WERE WARN. I HAD THE BRAKES INSPECTED A YEAR AGO (9000 MILES AGO) AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE FINE. I CAN UNDERSTAND TURNING THE ROTORS. I EXPECT TO PAY FOR PADS. BUT REPLACING THE CALIPERS ON BOTH WHEELS? DID I JUST GET TAKEN FOR A RIDE BY MY CHEVY DEALER? I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF REPORTS ABOUT PREMATURE BRAKE WEAR ON MALIBU. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THE REPAIR. *JB
2002 CHEVROLET MALIBU TURN SIGNAL WORKS INTERMITTENTLY. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS CAR AND WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR ACCIDENT IN DECEMBER 2004. SHE WAS TRYING TO MERGE LEFT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN A CAR JUST BEHIND HER ,AND TWO LANES TO THE LEFT, WENT FOR THE SAME SPOT. BECAUSE THE TURN SIGNAL FAILED, THE DRIVER IN THE OTHER LANE DID NOT KNOW SHE WAS TRYING TO MERGE AND PROCEEDED INTO THE SPOT. MY DAUGHTER HAD TO SWERVE BACK INTO HER LANE TO AVOID THE OTHER CAR , AND COULD NOT AVOID REAR-ENDING THE VEHICLE AHEAD WHERE TRAFFIC HAD SUDDENLY STOPPED. I RECENTLY TOOK THIS CAR TO THE DEALER, WHO COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND IN FACT THE PREVIOUS TWO MODEL YEARS WERE RECALLED FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM, WHICH IS RELATED TO A BAD HAZARD SWITCH. I FIDDLED WITH THE SWITCH AND FOUND THAT TAPPING THE SWITCH CAUSES THE SIGNALS TO MALFUNCTION. ALTHOUGH WE DIDN'T GET THIS CHECKED OUT UNTIL AFTER THE ACCIDENT, I BELIEVE THE ACCICENT WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE SIGNALS HAD BEEN WORKING, AND I AM REALLY ANNOYED THAT THE DEALERSHIP SEEMED SO IGNORANT OF THIS WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT THEY EASILY COULD HAVE BEEN. *AK

2001 CHEVY MALIBU'S ANTI THEFT LIGHT COMES ON SPORADICALLY WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN VEHICLE ON AND PREVENTS VEHICLE FROM BEING STARTED. KEY MUST BE LEFT IN THE ON POSITION FOR A MINIMUM OF 10 MINUTES FOR VEHICLE TO START. THERE ARE SEVERAL INSTANCES ALL OVER THE INTERNET WITH PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WHO HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY TRYING TO FIX THE PROBLEM TO NO AVAIL. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS CAR IN AUSTIN TEXAS AT PHARMACY SCHOOL. SHE GOT CAUGHT IN RISING WATER ONCE AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. IF FOR SOME REASON THE CAR WAS TO TURN OFF IN TRAFFIC AND NOT TURN ON, I.E. THE EXPRESSWAY THIS WOULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. *JB
