STARTING SOON AFTER PURCHASE, SEVERAL TIMES SINCE (APPROX 3-15 TIMES A WEEK DEPENDING ON SEASON). POWER STEERING SHUTS OFF RANDOMLY. IF DONE WHILE TURNING, IT WILL REQUIRE EXTRA FORCE AND CONCENTRATION TO KEEP ON COURSE. MOST TIMES ISSUE CANNOT BE RESET FOR FULL DURATION OF TRAVEL (15 MIN - 3HRS), THIS IS DONE BY SHUTTING OFF VEHICLE, AFTER STOPPING ON SIDE OF ROAD, AND RESTARTING. USUALLY OCCURS WHEN WARM, EITHER FROM SUNNY DAY FOR FIRST START OR WINTER ONCE HEATER IS WARM. MANY CLOSE CALLS! *JB
LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. THE POWER STEERING ASSIST GOES AWAY AND "POWER STEERING" IS DISPLAYED ON THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER. *TR
BOUGHT A CERTIFIED USED 2004 MALIBU MAXX IN AUGUST 2007 WITH 19000 MILES. CURRENTLY HAVE 68000 MILES. DRIVERS SEAT FRAME CRACKED. WAS NOT IN ANY ACCIDENT OR ANY INCIDENT WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED THE FRAME TO CRACK. THE DRIVER SEAT IS 4 WAY ELECTRIC POWERED SEAT. *TR
I OWN A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU MAXX. THE POWER STEERING IN THE VEHICLE GOES OUT WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. WHEN POWER STEERING GOES OUT, I HAVE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHERE I AM AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE TO GET POWER STEERING TO COME BACK ON. ALSO THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL LIGHT CONTINUES TO GO OUT. I HAVE REPLACED THE LIGHT SEVERAL TIMES AND IT CONTINUES TO BLOW AFTER A DAY. THE TURN SIGNAL BEING OUT MAKES IT HARD FOR ME TO TURN WHEN AT STOP SIGNS. OTHER DRIVERS DON'T KNOW I AM TURNING AND TRY TO DRIVE WHILE I AM MAKING A TURN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU CLASSIC. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN THE ANTI-THEFT LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE CONTAC STATED THAT THE WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION AND WAIT APPROXIMATELY 5-10 MINUTES BEFORE BEING ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR AT LEAST ONCE DAILY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUSE, IGNITION SWITCH AND THE COMPUTER WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT HE COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT THE REPAIR WOULD REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 54,000.
THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ON THIS VEHICLE (STEERING) LOCKED UP MAKING THE CAR UNSTEERABLE THUS CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. IT IS UNPREDICTABLE WHEN THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT LOCKS UP. PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SHAKING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND PREMATURE TIRE WARE. PART WAS REPLACED 2 YEARS AGO THROUGH WARRANTY BUT FAILED AGAIN. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MOST GM VEHICLES HOWEVER NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. THIS PART WILL BE REPLACED AGAIN AND OLD PART WILL BE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING 72 MPH, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. HE WAS ABLE TO SAFELY DRIVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. APPROXIMATELY 5 SECONDS AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. A LOCAL MECHANIC STATED THAT THE MAIN GEAR IN THE STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED 6 TO 7 TIMES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 149,000.
DRIVING THE 2004 CHEVY MALIBU IN A PARKING LOT WHEN POWER STEERING TURNED OFF. POWER STEERING WILL RESET AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR BUT WILL SUBSEQUENTLY TURN OFF AGAIN. LOOSES POWER STEERING MORE FREQUENTLY SINCE THE INITIAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER UNIT IN THE VEHICLE BURNED INTO PIECES. SHE USED THE LIGHTER REGULARLY AND WHEN THE LIGHTER POPPED BACKED OUT TO BE USED, THE ENTIRE UNIT OVERHEATED AND BURNED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS OR ISSUES WITH THE LIGHTER UNIT. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED SCARRING FROM THE FAILURE. SHE STATED THAT HER VEHICLE MAY BE AT RISK OF CATCHING FIRE OR EXPERIENCING OTHER ELECTRICAL FAILURES. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 121,000.
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING GOES OF SUDDENLY W/O ADVANCE NOTICE OF ANY KIND. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V153000 (STEERING). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, BUT THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I OWN A 2004 CHEVY MALIBU AND THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING QUIT. THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND THE DISPLAY SAID POWER STEERING. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS RIGHT AFTER I HAD PICKED MY SON UP FROM DAY CARE. I WAS ON MY HOME AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I COULD BARELY STEER THE CAR. I HAD TO PULL HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO GET THE CAR TO STEER. IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN ON MY WAY TO WORK, BUT NOW IT OVER STEERS TO THE RIGHT. IF THE POWER STEERING HAD COME BACK ON WHILE I WAS PULLING ON THE STEERING WHEEL I WOULD HAVE WENT INTO THE OTHER LANE AND CAUSED AND ACCIDENT (WITH MY SON IN THE CAR). I TOOK IT TO THE CHEVY DEALER AND THEY SAID THE STEERING COLUMN WAS ALREADY REPLACED DUE TO A RECALL. THE DEALER SAID THEY COULD REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN AT MY EXPENSE. IF THE STEERING COLUMN WAS ALREADY REPLACED, THEN WHY IS THE SAME PROBLEM STILL HAPPENING. I WILL NOT PAY TO HAVE A NEW ONE PUT IN WHEN IT ONLY TEMPORARILY FIXES THE PROBLEM. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME ISSUE. SOME HAVE CAUSED ACCIDENTS. I WILL NOT DRIVE THE CAR WITH MY SON IN THE CAR. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT GM DOES NOT ADMIT THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR GM TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM A "DEATH". *TR
THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE TURN SIGNAL / PARK LAMP WAS NOT WORKING. I REMOVED THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY TO ACCESS THE TURN SIGNAL BULB. BEFORE REMOVING THE BULB I NOTICED; A) THE OLD BULB GLASS WAS WHITE. B) THEOUTER CLEAR PLASTIC AND CHROME REFLECTIVE SURFACE OF THE HEAD LIGHT ASSEMBLY ARE DISCOLORED, DIRECTLY ABOVE THE TURN SIGNAL BULB, FROM HEAT. C) THE ROUND AMBER LENS DIRECTLY AROUND THE TURN SIGNAL BULB WAS MELTED AT THE TOP AND A MELTED PIECE OF THIS PLASTIC EXTENDED DOWN AND WAS MELTED TO THE TOP OF THE TURN SIGNAL BULB. CURRENTLY ALL I HAVE DONE WAS TO REPLACE THE BULB. NOTE: BOTH FRONT HEAD LAMP HOUSINGS HAVE THE SAME HEAT DISCOLORATION AND MELTING. *TR
THE DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS/TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS ON MY 2004 MALIBU MAXX ARE MELTING THROUGH THE AMBER COLORED HOUSING AND STARTING TO MELT THE CLEAR HOUSING THAT COVERS THE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT. I THINK AT SOME TIME THIS MIGHT LEAD TO A FIRE. THE PROBLEM WAS JUST NOTICED AT A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND MAY HAVE BEEN MELTING FOR A LONG TIME BEFORE IT WAS REALIZED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH AT NIGHT, THE POWER STEERING FAILED UNEXPECTEDLY. THE DRIVER HAD TO EXERT GREATER EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND IS CURRENTLY NOT BEING DRIVEN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 70,520.
WHILE CROSSING INTERSECTION, POWER STEERING GAVE OUT. CREATED POTENTIAL HEAD ON COLLISION WITH ON-COMING TRAFFIC. STEERING VEHICLE WAS VERY DIFFICULT. *TR
POWER STEERING FAILURE. THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE OF POWER STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY FAILING. FIRST ONE REPLACED UNDER RECALL NOTIFICATION. CURRENTLY AT DEALERSHIP WAITING FOR NEW UNIT TO BE INSTALLED. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY CAR, THE STEERING JUST FROZE UP AND MADE IT DIFFICULT TO HANDLE. THIS INCIDENT NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT ON A HEAVILY TRAVELED ROAD. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE COURSE OF FOUR MONTHS AND EACH TIME THE CAR HAD TO BE TAKEN TO A SHOP AND PUT ON A DIAGNOSTIC TESTER TO FIND AND CLEAR DEFAULT CODES TO MAKE CAR DRIVABLE. THIS PROBLEM CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME AGAIN AND TO REPAIR IT COSTS 600.00 . CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME? *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU THIS SUMMER WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN LOCKED UP AND WOULDN'T LET ME TURN THE WHEEL THANKFULLY I WAS ON A COUNTY ROAD SO I WAS ABLE TO PULL MY CAR TO THE SIDE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I HAD TO GET MY STEERING WHEEL COLUMN REPLACED AND THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN THIS TIME IT ONLY PARTIALLY LOCKED UP, BUT WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN AND I FEAR THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS COULD POSSIBLE HAPPEN AGAIN. *TR
THIS CAR IS TERRIBLE. NOT ONLY DID MY BRAKES NOT WORK WHICH MADE MY CAR CRASH THROUGH THE FRONT OF MY HOUSE THE STEERING HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAS MAJOR PROBLEMS. THE BLINKER BURNED A HOLE THROUGH THE LENS COVER AND MAKES THE HORN, DOORS AND LIGHTS NOT WORK. I HAVE CONTACTED GM SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS AND THEY DON'T CARE BECAUSE THE WARRANTY IS OUT. THEN YOU READ HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. THEY GOT THEIR BAILOUT HOW ABOUT A BAILOUT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT GM PRODUCTS. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO HELP FOR THE CONSUMER. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THERE WAS A SLIGHT LOSS OF POWER STEERING FOR A FEW SECONDS. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, THE ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND A MESSAGE DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INDICATING THAT THE FUEL CAP WAS OPEN. THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR SPORADICLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC THREE DIFFERENT TIMES FOR DIAGNOSIS HOWEVER, THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE PROBLEM AND THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 114,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU MAXX. THE CONTACT STATED THE POWER STEERING WOULD INTERMITTENTLY FAIL WHEN DRIVING AT 60 MPH OR LESS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY WHERE HE WAS INFORMED THE POWER STEERING MOTOR WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 93,000.
2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU MAXX. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO SOLENOID/LOCK FAILURE AND POOR ATTITUDE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE HATCH WOULD NOT OPEN, USING THE REMOTE. THE SAME PART FAILED TWICE. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 3 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE CONTACT DROVE FORWARD OUT OF A PARKING SPOT, BUT THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN. SHE HAD TO EXERT GREAT FORCE IN ORDER TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. IN ADDITION, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT ASSIST BECAUSE THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE STEERING. THE MANUFACTURER REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 128,000.
THE 1ST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 11 MONTHS AGO. I WAS DRIVING ON A BUSY AVENUE WHEN I LOST ALL STEERING CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE. NO WARNINGS JUST THE INABILITY TO STEER MY VEHICLE AT ALL. I FIGURED IT WAS A FLUKE AND DISMISSED IT FOR THE MOMENT. UNTIL IT STARTED HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME I ENDED UP IN A DITCH ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TERRIFIED! I BOUGHT 2004 CHEVY MALIBU NEW FROM THE DEALER SO I BROUGHT IT TO THEM. AFTER THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE VEHICLE AND DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING I FELT RELIEF, ASSUMING THE DEALER KNOWS BEST AND THEIR WAS NOTHING WRONG ACCORDING TO THEM. I CONTINUED DRIVING THE CAR WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO AN OUTSIDE MECHANIC WHO DID YET ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND FOUND THE STEERING SHAFT WAS BAD. IT WAS REPLACED AND AGAIN I ASSUMED THE PROBLEM WAS CURED. UNTIL YET ANOTHER INCIDENT OCCURRED. I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO STEERING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHILE TURNING LEFT AT AN INTERSECTION AND JUST BARELY AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE OUTSIDE REPAIR SHOP WHO EXPLAINED THAT WE SHOULD TRY CHANGING THE STEERING MOTOR AND SEE IF THAT WORKS. TRY WAS NOT A SATISFACTORY ANSWER TO ME SO I DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT A ALOT OF PEOPLE SHARED SIMILAR STORIES. I CALLED GM AND ASKED FOR THERE ASSISTANCE. THEY DENIED EVEN BEING AWARE THAT ANYONE ELSE HAD REPORTED SUCH A PROBLEM BEFORE ME, BUT SINCE THEIR WAS NOT A RECALL AND MY WARRANTY WAS UP, THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE, SO I AM SOMEWHAT OF A PRISONER IN MY OWN HOME IF I CAN NOT BORROW ANOTHER VEHICLE, AND I CAN'T EVEN THINK OF SELLING THE VEHICLE SINCE I FEEL IT IS SUCH A DANGER. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT SEEMS TO BE OVERLOOK BY THE NHTSA FOR THE FACT THAT NO ONE HAS BEEN KILLED AS OF YET. IT THAT WHAT IT TAKES FOR A RECALL? TO DATE THEIR ARE OVER 650 COMPLAINTS FILED FOR THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. WHEN WILL IT BE ADDRESSED BY GM AS AN ONGOING PROBLEM. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE MADE THE RECALL LIST. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU MAXX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REVERSING FROM A RESIDENTIAL GARAGE, THE POWER STEERING WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 162,790.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE DRIVER STATED THAT HIS POWER STEERING FAILED WHENEVER HE DROVE THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER STATED THAT THE WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE FAILURE BEGAN IN 2004 AFTER HE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE ALSO CAUSED HIM TO DRIVE INTO A DITCH AND CRASH INTO A FIRE HYDRANT WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. HE HAS NOTIFIED THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WHEN THE CRASH OCCURRED WAS 120,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

I HAVE A CHEVY MALIBU MAXX. I WAS DRIVING YESTERDAY AND THE POWER STEERING COMPLETELY BROKE WITHOUT WARNING. IT WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN THE WHEEL AT ALL. THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE CAME ON THE CONSOLE. I STOPPED THE CAR AND WAITED A WHILE AND TRIED IT AGAIN. RIGHT WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, I HAD POWER STEERING, BUT WITHIN 60 SECONDS, IT LOCKED UP AGAIN AND THE LIGHT CAME ON. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. IT IS AT A CAR PLACE NOW TO GET FIXED. *TR
I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE POWER STEERING JUST GOING OUT FOR NO REASON AT ALL. THERE IS A SLIGHT CLACKING NOISE AND THE STEERING WHEEL FIGHTS WITH YOU TO MAKE A TURN. I HAVE REPORTED TWO PREVIOUS INCIDENTS REGARDING NOISE IN THE FRONT END OF MY 2004 CHEVY MALIBU LS. THE SAME NOISE IS AGAIN OCCURRING IN THE FRONT END OF MY CAR WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE IT IS A STEERING ISSUE. SHE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED SEVERAL TIMES AS A RESULT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE A PASSLOCK SENSOR WAS REPLACED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 125,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 18,000. AT LEAST 3 OR 4 TIMES IN THE FIVE YEARS I'VE OWNED MY 2004 CHEVY MALIBU MY POWER STEERING FAILED DURING DRIVING ON THE ROADWAYS CAUSING ME DISTRESS AND DANGER TO MYSELF AND OTHERS. EVEN THOUGH I GOT THIS "REPAIRED" AT THE DEALERS, I FEEL LIKE THE POWER STEERING IS ABOUT TO FAIL AGAIN ANY DAY NOW. I'D LIKE THE DEALER TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR INSTEAD OF ME PAYING FOR IT. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO DECREASE IN SPEED WITHOUT HAVING HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN. SHE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND IT WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR WARRANTIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO REPAIRED THE POWER STEERING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 163,184 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 175,000.

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FUEL RELAY SWITCH OVERHEATED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO INDICATED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS FAILED AND WERE REPLACED MULTIPLE TIMES. IN ADDITION, THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE BRIGHT ENOUGH TO SEE IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHILE ACTIVATING THE CRUISE CONTROL AT ANY SPEED, THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXCLUDED FROM NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V252000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL, EXTERIOR LIGHTING, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
PWR STEERING FAILED UPON VEHICLE START-UP. TURNED OFF CAR AND RESTARTED AND PWR STEERING WORKED OK. WAS TOLD BY MECHANIC THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY PROBLEMS WITH PWR STEERING FAILURES ON MALIBU'S AND THAT IT IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAS CAUSE NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS. I HAD TO PAY $600 TO REPAIR (REPLACE STEERING COLUMN AND BOX) SINCE GM WOULD NOT COVER IT. (THIS IS THE 2ND TIME THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED---THE 1ST TIME WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY.) *TR

WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE POWER STEERING ON OUR 2004 MALIBU ALMOST FROM DAY ONE. AFTER FILING A COMPLAINT WITH THE BBB A CHEVY REP CONTACTED US, GOT THE COLUMN REPLACED AND SOME OTHER THINGS AND GAVE US AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THEN WE HAVE TAKEN IT IN BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING FAILURE CAME UP AGAIN BUT NO PROBLEM WAS EVER FOUND. LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING 2004 CHEVY MALIBU. NO ACCIDENT RESULTED AS GOING DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD. HEARD A NOISE WHEN TURNING THE VEHICLE FOR THE PAST WEEK AND NOW NO POWER STEERING THOUGHT IT HAD TO BE A BAD BALL JOINT BUT AFTER RESEARCH IT TURNS OUT TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING. SHUT VEHICLE OFF AND STARTED AGAIN AND THE POWER STEERING WAS NORMAL. WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE THEFT SYSTEM IN HER VEHICLE WOULD ACTIVATE AND CAUSE THE VEHICLE NOT TO START. THE FAILURE WORSENED AND RECENTLY BEGAN TO OCCUR EVERY TWO DAYS. THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PLACE THE KEY INTO THE IGNITION AND TURN IT SO THAT IT WOULD RESET AND THE THEFT DETERRENT LIGHT WOULD DIM. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SERVICE CENTER, BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY FAILURES. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED HER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,450 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,000.
TURNING LEFT AT A MAJOR INTERSECTION THE POWER STEERING WENT DEAD. THE ORANGE SERVICE INDICATOR CAME ON, AND POWER STEERING CAME ON THE CENTER DISPLAY. I WAS ABLE TO GLIDE INTO A GAS STATION PARKING LOT. THE SERVICE DEPT SAID THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED BUT I NEEDED TO HAVE THAT DONE AT A DEALER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO THEN FOUND THE CAR TO BE OPERATIONAL. THERE WERE ERROR CODES IN THE SYSTEM BUT THEY ARE SO FAR UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM. THEY WILL TRY AGAIN TOMORROW BUT IF THEY CAN'T RECREATE IT I AM SUPPOSED TO COME PICK UP THE CAR AND DRIVE IT AS NORMAL. MY CAR WAS DIAGNOSED AS NEEDING A NEW MOTOR PUT IN MY STEERING COLUMN. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND I HAVE SPOKEN TO CHEVY ABOUT IT. THEY DO NOT CARE BECAUSE I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THEIR "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN" TO REPLACE THIS PART FOR FREE EXPIRED AT THE END OF JANUARY 2005. MY POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON ALMOST EVERY TIME I START THE CAR AND I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH IT. LUCKILY MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING WHEN THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING I MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE THE TURN AND I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN INTO AN ACCIDENT. MAYBE THAT WOULD GET CHEVY'S ATTENTION! UNDER THE REPORT FOR ODI'S INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER THEY SAID THAT THE DRIVER'S ABILITY TO STEER THIS "RELATIVELY SMALL" AND LIGHT CAR WAS NOT IMPACTED GREATLY. THAT'S COMPLETELY UNTRUE. I'M AN AVERAGE-SIZED FEMALE WHO HAS A 16-MONTH-OLD DAUGHTER. EVERY TIME MY DAUGHTER GETS INTO MY CAR, THIS BECOMES A SAFETY ISSUE, DESPITE WHAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS DECIDED THUS FAR. THE WIRING IN THE HORN WAS ALSO DEFECTIVE AND IT WAS REPAIRED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE FOR $200. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 23,800.
