NUMBER ONE COMPLAINT. 2004 MALIBU IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH INTERMITTENLY NOT STARTING. PURCHASED THE CAR WITH 6000+ MILES. THE PROBLEM STARTED RIGHT AFTER PURCHASE. DEALER CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. WAS TOLD TO DRIVE IT UNTIL IT BECOMES FREQUENT PROBLEM. LAST EPISODE WAS ON 12/8/04. ALSO HAVE HAD WARNING COME UP ON REGARDING THE POWERS TEERING, TOOK TO DEALER. THEY HAD TO "REPROGRAM THE CAR". HAVEN'T HAD THAT PROBLEM SINCE. VERY CONCERNED OVER THE ISSUE OF CAR NOT STARTING. WORRIED IT MY QUIT RUNNING WHILE DRIVING, AND CAUSE ACCIDENT.*AK
WHEN STARTING/DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS FAILED TO WORK INTERMITTENTLY. PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. *JB
MY 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU WAS PARKED LEGALLY IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. THE STREET WAS COVERED WITH BLACK ICE. THE DRIVER OF A 1999 FORD RANGER TRUCK SLIPPED ON THE ICE AND HIT THE FRONT OF MY CAR. HIS AUTO INSURANCE, STATE FARM, PAID FOR A RENTAL CAR FOR 40 DAYS AND PAID $5,338.10 IN BODY REPAIRS, INCLUDING REPLACING THE RADIATOR. HOWEVER, WHEN IT CAME TIME TO PAY $527.18 TO REPLACE THE STEERING SHAFT AND THE GEAR SHIFTER, THEY REFUSED. THE REASON GIVEN WAS THAT THESE PARTS IN THE 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU HAVE A HISTORY OF WEARING OUT PREMATURELY. THE CAR RAN FINE BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. HOWEVER, AFTER READING THE COMPLAINTS ON YOUR WEB SITE, I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ADD MY COMPLAINT. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A GM CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE ON AUGUST 2, 2007, 17 MONTHS BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. THE CAR HAD 31,720 MILES ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT AND 34,517 MILES AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, A DIFFERENCE OF 2,797 MILES I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THAT INSURANCE COMPANIES DO NOT PAY FOR CERTAIN COMPONENTS ON THE 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THIS CAR IS STILL BEING SOLD ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. I FOUND 7 GM CERTIFIED USED VEHICLES, CHEVROLET 2004 MALIBU'S FOR SALE WITHIN A RADIUS OF 250 MILES RANGING IN PRICE FROM $9,500 TO $14,000. PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE SAFE WHEN THEY BUY THESE 2004 MALIBU'S; THEY ARE NOT. IS THERE SOME WAY THEY CAN BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD? *TR THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ON DEC. 3, 2004 I WAS TURNING INTO MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WHEN MY STEERING WHEEL COMPLETELY LOCKED UP THE SERVICE SOON LIGHT WAS ON AND MY CAR WAS DINGING. I HAD TO BRAKE QUICKLY OR I WOULDNT HAVE GONE RIGHT INTO THE CORNER OF A CHURCH. I QUICKLY RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, WHICH RESTARTED THE POWER STEERING, BUT THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. I CALLED CHEVY AND THEY TOWED MY CAR AND I RECEIVED A LONER VEHICLE. THEY HAD THE REPAIR DONE FAIRLY QUICK AND SAID THEY HAD TO REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN. I LOOKED ON THIS SIGHT AND NOTICED MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I AM JUST CONCERNED ON WHY THERE HASNT BEEN A RECALL?? I KNOW THIS COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES AND SOMETHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECALLED AFTER THIS MANY OCCURRENCES. *JB EA04018_CAT
WHILE DRIVING ALONG, HEARD SYSTEM WARNING, LOOKED AT MESSAGE CENTER DISPLAY WHICH SAID" POWER STEERING" AND REALIZED I HAD NO POWER STEERING. I DROVE SLOWLY IN THE LANE THAT WOULD REQUIRE NO CHANGING LANES, SLOWED DOWN DRAMATICALLY AND MUSCLED MY WAY THROUGH EACH TURN IN ORDER TO GET HOME. I WILL TAKE THE CAR TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE DEALERSHIP IN THE MORNING.*AK EA04018_CAT
ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND NUMEROUS STARTING PROBLEMS. WHILE DRIVING, THE DOOR LOCKS UNLOCKED, ENGINE DIES WITH NO WARNING. *BF NAR *JLS THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP, THE HAZARD LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING, THE ALARM WOULD GO OFF, THE POWER REAR VIEW MIRRORS WERE INOPERATIVE, THE VEHICLE WOULD BUCK AND SURGE, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHAKE, THE VEHICLE WOULD START ROUGH AND THE TACHOMETER WOULD BOUNCE. *SC *JB
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATES THAT VEHICLE WILL NOT START. THE CAR WILL DIE WHILE IT IS IDLING. WHEN GETTING OUT OF VEHICLE AND TURNING IT OFF AND THEN GET TING BACK INTO THE VEHICLE IT WILL NOT START AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES. THE CD PLAYER WILL NOT WORK, AND SOMETIMES WHEN HE TRIED STARTING VEHICLE THE TRUNK WILL OPEN. SO IT HAD BEEN SEVERAL DIFFERENT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED OF 65-70 MPH VEHICLE MOMENTARILY LOST POWER STEERING. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO FOUND THAT THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.*AK
VEHICLE PULLED OVER/OFF THE ROAD WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED. CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD, BUT THERE WAS NO SIGN OF APPARENT MALFUNCTION. TOOK VEHICLE DEALER FOR CHECK UP.*AK EA04018_CAT
2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU LT VIN # [XXX] - ODOMETER READING 4320 MILES - VEHICLE PURCHASED 1/31/04. DURING NORMAL CITY DRIVING WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, ALSO NDICATED A PROBLEM WITH POWER STEERING. IMMEDIATE TOTAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING - HUSBAND ABLE TO PULL OFF WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY INTO A PARKING LOT. VEHICLE DRIVEN TO A DEALERSHIP - NO SERVICE AVAILABLE ON WEEKENDS. WHEN VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED THE POWER STEERING WAS ONCE AGAIN OPERATIONAL, AND WAS DRIVEN 60 MILES HOME. HERE THE LATEST ON THE STEERING PROBLEMS ON MY 2004 MAXX LT WHICH IS FULLY LOADED: 1ST VISIT TO SERVICE: YELLOW WRENCH LIGHT ON AND STEERING LOCKED UP WHILE DRIVING MY 2 YEAR OLD AND MY WIFE. 2ND VISIT TO SERVICE: EARLIER REPLACED STEERING COLUMN, GAVE ME THE CAR BACK. PROBLEM NOW WAS THAT I COULDN'T EVEN TURN THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT ONLY RIGHT. 3RD VISIT TO SERVICE: WHEN I ACCELERATE THE STEERING WHEEL TURNS LEFT AS FAR AS ABOUT 10 O'CLOCK ON CLOCK FOR EXAMPLE. I TEST IT OUT WITHOUT HOLDING THE WHEEL JUST TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS AND I TESTED IT OUT ON 10 DIFFERENT STREETS WHERE ALL OF THEM ARE FLAT. WHAT WOULD YOU IN MY CASE? WOULD YOU ASK FOR AN EXCHANGE OR WOULD YOU ALLOW THEM TO FIX IT FOR A 3RD TIME AND RISK POSSIBLE MORE PROBLEMS? IT HAS 6,900 MILES ON IT AND IN PERFECT SHAPE.*AK EA04018_CAT
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED POWER STEERING PUMP FAILED. AS A RESULT, STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT.*AK EA04018_CAT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE CRUISE CONTROL FAILED TO OPERATE PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V252000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL, EXTERIOR LIGHTING, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL); HOWEVER, THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000.
RECENTLY URCHASED DA 04 CHEC MALIBU. THREE WEEKS AGO THE POWER STEERING AILED...WITH NO STEERING WHATSOEVER!. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALER. DEALER "FIXED"PROBLEM AND STATED THAT NO ONE HAS EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE. NOT TRUE ACCORDING TO THIS WEB SITE. THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *AK EA04018_CAT
I WAS PARKED ON THE STREET IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE AND PULLED AWAY AND UP TO THE STOP SIGN JUST A COUPLE HOUSES UP THE BLOCK. I WAS FUMBLING WITH MY SEAT BELT AND SLOWLY TOOK OFF WITHOUT MY HANDS ON THE WHEEL. WHEN I GRABBED THE WHEEL SECONDS LATER, I NOTICED IT WAS OFF CENTER, BUT THE CAR WAS STILL GOING PERFECTLY STRAIGHT AND THEN IT BEGAN TO TWITCH BACK AND FORTH TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT. THIS CONTINUED ALL THE WAY TO THE GAS STATION WHERE I FILLED UP, AND UPON LEAVING GAS STATION DIC CHIMED IN WITH POWER STEERING FAILURE MESSAGE AND I LOST ALL POWER STEERING. LLUCKILY, I WAS STILL IN THE PARKING LOT, TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND WENT BACK HOME WITHOUT INCIDENT. EA04018_CAT. *AK
THE INCIDENT OCCURRED IN SC, WHERE I WAS RESIDING AT THE TIME. THE CAR WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY OF MY HOUSE. I WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE FOR WORK AND NEEDED SOMETHING FROM THE TRUNK OF THE CAR. OPENED THE TRUNK AND JUST AFTER I BENDED TO REACH IN, IT FELL DOWN ON MY HEAD CAUSING BLEEDING. I HAD TO HAVE 3 STITCHES PUT TO MY SCALP, LOST HALF A DAY OF WORK THAT MORNING AND SUFFERED HEADACHES FOR A FEW DAYS. CONTACTED GM DEALERSHIP AND THE PART WAS REPLACED. I'VE BEEN AVOIDING THE DECK LID EVER SINCE. CONTACTED ESIS/GM CENTRAL CLAIMS UNIT AND A CLAIM WAS ENTERED (#488402). THEY SEND AN INVESTIGATOR WHO OBTAINED THE FAILED PART FROM THE DEALERSHIP AT THE TIME IT WAS REPLACED AND TOOK PICTURES/VIDEO OF THE REAR DECK LID. STILL WAITING ON A RESOLUTION. *JB

THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE CONSUMER PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER BEFORE STOPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. *AK EA04018_CAT THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATED UNCONTROLLABLY. WHILE RECEIVING ASSISTANCE, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN LEFT OR RIGHT. *SC *JB
I HAVE A 2004 MALIBU LS, WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR DURING THE WINTER OF 04 I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING. IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, I TOOK IT BACK EVERY WINTER FOR 4 YEARS AND THE DEALERSHIP ALWAYS REPAIRED THE CAR. IN 2010 MY POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST POWER TRYING TO TURN INTO A PARKING SPOT. THE NEXT TIME IT OCCURRED, I WAS DRIVING 50 MPH I WENT TO CHANGE LANES THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND I COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL. I WAS PULLING OUT FROM A PARKING SPOT THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND I COULD NOT STEER THE CAR. THIS YEAR THE SEAT BELT LIGHT STAYS ON WHEN MY SEAT BELT IS ON. IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY THE LIGHT STAYS ON. THE DEALER THAT I USE TO USE WENT OUT OF BUSINESS AND DID NOT NOTIFY THE CUSTOMERS. I FOUND OUT WHEN I WENT TO HAVE SOME WORK CORRECTED THAT THEY DID. THIS PROBLEM IS SCARY BECAUSE I NEVER KNOW WHEN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT IS GOING TO COME ON. THAT IS VERY VERY SCARY. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THEY CAN NEVER FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I RECENTLY HAD MY CAR INSPECTED THEY WOULD NOT PASS IT BECAUSE OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT.I HAD TO DRIVE THE CAR FOR 300 MILES AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF AND THEY PASSED IT FOR INSPECTION. THE ORIGINAL BRAKES WERE REPLACED 3 TIMES IN THE FIRST 2 YEARS OF HAVING THE CAR. I ONLY HAVE 45, 000 MILES. PURCHASED 2 BATTERIES FROM GM THE 2ND ONE LASTED LESS THEN 2 YEARS AND DIED. AN AUTHENTIC GM BATTERY. *TR
AS MY FAMILY AND I WERE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN OUR NEW MALIBU MAXX THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE RADIO STATED POWER STEERING. I TRIED TO STEER THE MAXX BUT IT HAD NO POWER STEERING. I STOPPED TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND IT STARTED WORKING. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY WERE HAVING MAJOR TROUBLE WITH THE NEW MALIBU'S ELECTRIC ASSIST STEERING. THEY REPLACED THE COLUMN AND MOTOR. THAT LASTED ABOUT THREE MONTHS. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A MAJOR INTERSTATE EARLY ON A SUNDAY MORNING WHEN THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN. THIS TIME SEVERELY JERKING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT PUSHING ME INTO THE LEFT LANE OF TRAFFIC. HAD THIS BEEN MY WIFE ON HER WAY TO WORK MONDAY MORNING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON THIS INTERSTATE THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. WE ARE NOW ON THE THIRD STEERING COLUMN, NOW THE HEATING AND DEFROST CONTROL UNIT IS BAD, LEAVING US WITH NO HEAT OR DEFROST. NOT TO MENTION THE REAR SEATBELT GOT STUCK AND WOULDN'T MOVE. ALL BUT THE HEATING CONTROL HAVE BEEN FIXED (AT DEALER NOW) BUT WHERE WILL IT STOP???? MY FAMILY WORKS FOR GM AND I THINK I WILL BUY A FORD!!!!!!!! GM BETTER STAND UP AND ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM! THE ELECTRONIC STEERING IN MY 2004 MALIBU FAILED WHILE THE CAR WAS IN OPERATION. IT HAD BEEN JERKING WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I TOOK IT IN AND THEY SAID IT WAS PROBABLY WATER/DAMPNESS CAUSING THE JERKING. THEN IT FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND THEY REPLACED THE PARTS UNDER WARRANTY. *JB

I HAVE A 2004 CHEVY MALIBU LS, IT IS NOT YET 18 MONTHS OLD AND I HAVE TO BRING IT IN FOR THE 2ND STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT THIS MONDAY. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND HAVE FOUND OUT THAT HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD SIMILAR/WORSE PROBLEMS WITH STERRING. SOME EXAMPLES INCLUDE COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING, LOSS OF POWER STEERING, A LOUD THUDDING SOUND WHEN TURNING TH WHEEL DURING RIGHT TURNS (THIS IS WHAT MY CAR HAS BEEN DOING), I HAD MY 2ND STEERING COLUMN PUT IN MY CAR IN NOV 04, WHEN MY CAR WAS 10 MONTHS OLD, I NOW AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM/SOUND AGAIN AND NEED TO BRING IT IN FOR A 3RD STEERING COLUMN, MEANING IT CAME WITH A DEFECTIVE ONE, WAS EVIDENTLY REPAIRED WITH A DEFECTIVE ONE AND WHO KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN 6 MONTHS FROM NOW. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MY DEALERSHIP, FILED A COMPLAINT WITH CHEVY AND WAS TOLD BY BOTH THAT HAVE ONLY ISSUED "BULLETINS" FOR MECHANICS. I FEEL A RECALL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM, LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. SO, TO WRAP THIS UP, I HAD MY CAR FOR 10 MONTHS AND NEEDED A NEW STEERING COLUMN (11/04) NOW 6 MONTHS LATER I WILL BE GETTING ANOTHER. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS DANGEROUSE DEFECT AND FEEL FREE CONTACT ME IF I CAN ASSIST ANY FURTHER.
VEHICLE PURCHASED IN DECEMBER, 2003. AT APPROXIMATELY 14000 MILES, NOVEMBER 2004, WHILE DRIVING, POWER STEERING FAILED. TURNED IGNITION OFF AND RESTARTED CAR; POWER STEERING WORKED BRIEFLY, THEN FAILED AGAIN. TURNED IGNITION OFF AND BACK ON; ABLE TO DRIVE VEHICLE HOME. I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH MY 04 MALIBU. ROUGH IDLE, POWER STEERING FALIURE MANY TIMES TOOK TO DEALER 3 TIMES COULD NOT DUPLICATE, BROUGHT IN WITH POWER STEERING OUT AT IT WAS DUPLICATED, BUT COULD NOT FIGURE OUT FOR A WHILE TOLD ME TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE, NO SAFETY FACTOR.FINALLY THOUGHT THEY FIGURED OUT PUT IN A NEW STEERING COLUMN, 9,000 MILES LATER BACK TO HAVING PROBLEMS WITH POWER STEERING. ALSO PROBLEMS WITH HARD SHIFTING,AND ALSO WITH IGNITION STICKING OR CONTINUING TO TURN OVER AFTER LEETING GO OF THE KEY. I WOULD NOT RECOMEND THIS CAR TO ANYONE AND THEY SHOULD ALL BE CRUSHED.MY WIFE IS TERRIFIED OF THE CAR AND WILL NOT DRIVE.CAR IS AT DEALER RIGHT NOW WE ARE DRIVING A LOANER. *JB EA04018_CAT
A RECALL FOR THE ABS SYSTEM WAS ISSUED.CONSUMER WAS WAITING FOUR MONTHS.*AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE TURN SIGNALS AND HAZARD LIGHTS WORK RANDOMLY, ESPECIALLY IN CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE FAILURE WAS NOTICED WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH. WHENEVER THE CONTACT ACTIVATED THE TURN SIGNAL AND HAZARD LIGHTS, HE WOULD HEAR THE LIGHTS FLICKER, BUT THEY WOULD NOT OPERATE. THE CONTACT FOUND A RECALL ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND CALLED THE MANUFACTURER. HE WAS INFORMED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURES. HER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOUND HAIRLINE CRACKS WHERE THE MIRROR MOUNTS TO THE VEHICLE. THE MIRROR WAS REAPPLIED. THIS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES THEREAFTER. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE TO DATE TO CORRECT THE ACTUAL FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNDER 10,000. THE CURRENT WAS 48,000.

I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN AN INTERSTATE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL MADE SMALL JERKING MOTIONS TO THE RIGHT AND MADE A GRINDING NOISE. WHEN I EXITED THE INTERSTATE AND WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT THE STEERING WHEEL CONTINUED TO JERK ON ITS OWN. THIS CONTINUED INTERMINTELY FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. THEN I WAS TURNING INTO A GAS STATION AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. AFTER I RESTARTED THE CAR I HAD POWER STEERING AGAIN. POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN. DEALERSHIP SAID STEERING COLUMN HAS TO BE REPLACED. THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED AT 14,000 MILES BECAUSE OF A SERVICE BULLETIN. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 56,000 MILES ON IT AND REPAIR COST IS IN EXCESS OF $550. MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN INVESTIGATED. APPARENTLY GM HAS NOT FOUND A RELIABLE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO I NOTICED COG-WHEELING OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN RIGHT. IT WAS INTERMITTENT, BUT BEGAN TO INCREASE IN FREQUENCY WITH VIBRATION THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. TODAY, WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING COMPLETELY. I WAS ABOUT 25 MILES FROM HOME, AND HAD TO DRIVE WITH NO POWER STEERING THE ENTIRE WAY. I WILL CONTACT THE DEALER ON THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. WE OWN TWO 2004 MALIBU'S, THE OTHER MALIBU HAD THE SAME PROBLEM SEVERAL MONTHS AGO AND HAD TO HAVE THE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED. ON SATURDAY, 16 OCT 2004, WHILE RUNNING ERRANDS, THE ELECTRIC ASSIST POWER STEERING BEGAN PULSATING/VIBRATING THE STEERING WHEEL AND PULLING THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT. THE PULSATION/VIBRATION CONTINUED EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK. IT ONLY STOPPED WHEN THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF. UPON RESTARTING THE ENGINE THE SYMPTOMS DISAPPEARED FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, ONLY TO RETURN AS BEFORE. THE VIBRATION IS NO BETTER OR WORSE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THAN AT LOCAL SPEEDS, OR STANDING STILL. ON MONDAY, 18 OCT 2004, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO JIM REED CHEVROLET, NASHVILLE, TN, WHERE THE SYMPTOMS PRESENTED THEMSELVES IN FRONT OF THE SERVICE MANAGER. HE SAID THAT HE HAD "JUST RECEIVED A TSB" CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM. HE KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR THE DAY AND REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT YET REOCCURRED. EA04018_CAT. *AK
ON MARCH 22, 2004 AT 2,715 MILES STEERING COLUMN LOCKED WHILE DRIVING 56 MPH. DURING THE ATTEMPT TO UNLOCK THE STEERING COLUMN CONSUMER BROKE THE STEERING WHEEL. COMPLETE AND SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING WHICH IS ONLY REMEDIED BY TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. I PURCHASED A 2004 MALIBU MAXX, NEW NOT USED. THE SECOND DAY I DROVE IT, IT SPUTTERED A LITTLE AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. ON OCTOBER 14, I FILLED THE CAR WITH GAS AND WITHIN 1 MILE, THE CAR STALLED OUT 4 TIMES. I INITIALLY THOUGHT I HAD PURCHASED BAD GAS, AND MY HUSBAND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. THEY CAME AND PICKED IT UP WITH A WRECKER. AT THIS TIME, THE CAR HAD LESS THAN 800 MILES ON IT. THEY CALLED ME THE NEXT DAY AND SAID IT WAS MY ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM AND THEY HAD TO REPROGRAM MY KEY BUT IT WAS FINE NOW. I PICKED IT UP AND BEFORE I MADE IT HOME, IT STALLED OUT AGAIN. I GOT IT HOME, MY HUSBAND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WE TOOK IT BACK. ON THE WAY BACK IT STALLED OUT 2 MORE TIMES AND STARTED SPUTTERING LIKE IT WANTED TO STALL OUT AGAIN. TO DATE (OCTOBER 24, 2004), I STILL DO NOT HAVE THE CAR. I SPOKE WITH MIKE ANDREWS (THE SALES MANAGER) AND DISCUSSED POSSIBLY EXCHANGING FOR A NEW VEHICLE AND HE REFUSED. I THEN CALLED CHEVROLET IN DETROIT (4 DAYS AGO) AND SHE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK BECAUSE THERE WAS A LEAK BETWEEN THE FILLER PIPE AND THE TANK AND "FUEL WAS LEAKING WHERE IT SHOULDN'T". THEY SAID I SHOULD HAVE IT BACK BY FRIDAY (OCTOBER 22). THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS NOW SAYING THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN OUT ON IT AND THEY HAD NOT RECIEVED THE FUEL TANK YET AND IT COULD BE MONDAY OR TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK BEFORE I GET IT BACK. *AK

2004 CHEVY. MALIBU TURN SIGNAL BULB/DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS MELT THROUGH THE PLASTIC AMBER COVER AND CONSTANTLY BURN OUT THE 3157 LIGHT BULBS. THE COMPANY HAS SEVERAL REPAIR REPORTS FOR THIS VIN; NOW I REPLACE THE BULBS MYSELF. GM DOES NOT WANT TO RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM. MY HEADLIGHTS ARE RUINED, THE LENS COVERING THE ENTIRE HEADLAMP HAS CRACKED FROM THE HEAT AND IS STAINED FROM HEAT DAMAGE. THIS IS A COSTLY REPAIR THAT GM WILL NOT PERFORM. *TR

THERE WAS ALSO A SERVICE LIGHT ON THE IP. THERE WAS NO POWER ASSIST AT ALL, AND IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. I SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED. IT SEEMED OK. IT THEN FAILED TWO MORE TIMES WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS, BUT THIS TIME I WAS IN A BUSY INTERSECTION. I AM TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ASAP. ON OCTOBER 2, 2004, THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING FOR THE SECOND TIME. STEERING WAS VERY DIFFICULT AND EVEN MORE DIFFICULT SINCE I AM 4 MONTHS PREGNANT. I HAD TO DRIVE THE CAR ABOUT 10 MILES TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN. THEY HAD TO KEEP OVER THE WEEKEND. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPENED AND THE POWER STEERING BEGIN TO WORK AGAIN. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE STEERING ON THIS MALIBU AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO RESOLVE THOSE ISSUES. EITHER THE PROBLEM HAD TO BE DUPLICATED BY THE TECHNICIAN OR THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO FIND THE CODES IN THE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. I WAS JUST INFORMED BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THE CAR IS READY AND THE POWER STEERING COLUMN MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THAT SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I HOPE SO. IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST A WEEK TO GET THE PART IN. (1) REAR DEFROST DOES NOT WORK (2) NOT ABLE TO SEE OUT OF THE BACK WINDOW IN THE MORNING. (3) WILL BE LOOKED AT WHEN CAR IS IN FOR STEERING UNIT TO BE REPLACED. (1) WEAK START UP (2) EMBARRASSING WHEN OWNING A NEW CAR WITH ONLY 1600 MILES ON IT. (3) WILL BE LOOKED AT WITH OTHER PROBLEMS.
