TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU MAXX. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE POWER STEERING FAILS. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO BRING IN THE VEHICLE FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE AND IS BECOMING VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 77,000.
2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU POWER STEERING ILLUMINATES ON DASH(RADIO) , 2005 MODELS WERE A RECALL AND IT KEEPS COMING ON AND SOMETIMES LOSE OF STEERING WHEN STARTED. IT HAS 43,000 MILES AND NOT ON WARRANTY BECAUSE STEERING COLUMN IS NOT COVERED , ITS A PROBLEM NATIONWIDE AS I RESEARCHED. I COULD POTENTIALLY BE DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING AROUND TURNS IF LOSS OF POWER. I BOUGHT IT USED BUT WAS FINE UNTIL 2 MONTHS AFTER. *TR
VEHICLE STALLS INTERMITTENTLY WHEN STOPPED AND IDLING. THIS OCCURS WHEN BACKING UP AND ALSO WHEN IDLING. IT SEEMS TO OCCUR MORE SO WHEN THE AIR TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE IS VERY HOT. USUALLY WHEN IT IS AROUND 85 - 90 DEGREES OUTSIDE. VEHICLE USUALLY RESTARTS OK. ONLY ONE INSTANCE WHEN ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF TWICE WHILE IDLING, IT WOULD NOT RESTART UNTIL ENGINE COOLED DOWN. THEN WAS ABLE TO START ENGINE. MECHANICS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETECT PROBLEM EVEN WHEN VEHICLE WAS SCANNED FOR CODES. HAVE TAKEN IT TO DIFFERENT AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE SHOPS INCLUDING DEALERSHIPS AND NO ONE CAN FIND THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY STATE IT IS INTERMITTENT. AIR TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE A KEY FACTOR WITH CAR STALLING WHEN TEMPERATURE VERY HOT. THE CAR HAS NEVER OVERHEATED WHEN THIS OCCURS.
I STARTED THE CAR AND THOUGHT IT HAD STALLED BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING HAD FAILED. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND FOUND IT WAS THE POWER STEERING. THE CAR SAT FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS AND WHEN RESTARTED THE POWER STEERING HAD RETURNED. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IT FAILED AGAIN AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. IT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED YET. *TR
SHAKING IN STEERING WHEEL WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED,THIS HAPPEN EVERYTIME I APPLY THE BRAKES. THE DEALER RESURFACED FRONT ROTORS AND REPLACED PADS..CAR STILL HAVE A GRINDING NOISE IN FRONT WHEELAREA DEALER SAID THAT THE REPLACEMENT PADS ARE CAUSING THE GRINDING AND THERE'S NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO STOP THE GRINDING BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE REPLACEMENT PAS ARE DESIGNED. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND I TOLD THE DEALERSHIP THIS AND THEY CLAIM IT IS SAFE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 50 MPH, THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE STEERING WHEEL THEN LOCKED IN PLACE, PREVENTING THE CONTACT FROM MOVING THE WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TURNING LEFT ON ITS OWN. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED AND THE VEHICLE COASTED OFF THE ROAD ON ITS OWN AS WELL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN FAILED AND COULD BE REPAIRED AT THE COST OF $700. POWER STEERING UNIT (EPS) FOR 2006 CHEVY MALIBU FAILS CAR BECOMES DIFFCULT TO TURN OR MANEUVER. *TR
THE ELECTRIC STEERING ASSIST SYSTEM CONTINUES TO FAIL ON A REGULAR BASIS. IT WILL LOCK UP AND THE STEERING WHEEL WILL NOT TURN. SO FAR, THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED AT LOW SPEEDS AND HAS NOT CAUSED A CRASH. I HAVE HAD IT INTO DEALERSHIPS 4 TIMES SO FAR. ALTHOUGH DEALERSHIP PERSONNEL HAVE EXPERIENCES THE FAILURE, NO CODE IS GENERATED THEREFORE CHEVROLET WILL NOT PAY FOR REPAIR. THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY AND ONLY HAS 25,000 MILE ON IT. *TR
I PURCHASED MY MALIBU IN DEC '06. BY JUNE, MY POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON, BUT MY MECHANIC COULDN'T FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. I STARTED NOTICING TROUBLE TURNING THE WHEEL AT LOW SPEEDS, BUT IT WAS ONLY WHEN I TURNED LEFT. INITIALLY I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS STILL POWER STEERING, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUED FOR OVER A YEAR PERIODICALLY. THEN IN AUG '08 ON MY WAY HOME WITH MY NEWBORN IN THE CAR....I TURNED LEFT TO PULL INTO MY DRIVEWAY, AND LOST THE POWER STEERING. I HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND THE REPAIR COST OVER $1,000 AND THE DEALER SAID IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN IN A YEAR OR SO. THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN AND POWER STEERING MOTOR WAS REPLACED. AFTER THE DEALER'S 12/12 WARRANTY EXPIRED, I STARTED HAVING THE SAME SYMPTOMS ALL OVER AGAIN. SO FAR IT HASN'T GONE OUT, BUT THE "POPPING" NOISE AND "LOOSE" STEERING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, PLUS THE MORE DIFFICULT STEERING WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS IS BACK AGAIN. WHEN THE ORIGINAL INCIDENT HAPPENED, I HAD JUST TURNED OFF A MAIN STREET. IF IT HAD HAPPENED JUST TWO BLOCKS EARLIER, I WOULD HAVE BEEN "T-BONED" WITH MY DAUGHTER IN THE CAR. *TR
BRAKE LIGHTS TURN ON WITHOUT PRESSING PEDAL, YET LIGHTS TURN OFF WHEN PEDAL IS PRESSED. REQUIRES ALMOST FULL PEDAL PRESSURE TO ACTUATE BRAKE LIGHTS, SO LIGHTS ACTUALLY DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY UNTIL ALMOST FULLY BRAKING, SUCH AS DURING A QUICK STOP. HAVE HAD MANY INSTANCES IN TRAFFIC OF OTHER VEHICLES NEARLY COLLIDING WITH ME WHILE SLOWING DOWN, OBVIOUSLY FROM THE LACK OF CORRECTLY FUNCTIONING BRAKE LIGHTS. *TR
INITIALLY SOMETIMES MY CAR WOULD CRANK UP THEN DIE OUT SECONDS LATER NOW ITS HAPPENING QUITE OFTEN AND MOST TIMES WON'T CRANK UP NOW. THIS HAS CAUSED ME TO BE LATE AND DOCKED FROM WORK. I'VE BROUGHT THE CAR IN 5 TO 6 TIMES THE LAST TIME IN 2/2009 THEY SAID THEY PUT IN A NEW FUEL PUMP CYLINDER BUT TWO DAYS LATER I'D THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. *TR
POWER STEERING FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS IN HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. INTERMITTENT FAILURE. SEVERAL MONTHS OF DRIVING IT WOULD SPORADICALLY FAIL AND THEN RETURN BACK TO NORMAL. EVENTUALLY IT FAILED COMPLETELY. WENT TO HAVE THE PS MODULE REPLACED ONLY TO DISCOVER THE COLUMN IS TO BE REPLACED WITH IT. THE VEHICLE IS DRIVABLE, BUT FEELS UNSAFE AND PUTS OTHERS AT RISK. VEHICLE IS NOT EASILY MANEUVERABLE AT LOW SPEEDS. NEEDS LARGE SPACE TO TURN AROUND. SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG THIS VEHICLE AS I HAVE SEEN MANY MANY COMPLAINTS. WHY IS THERE NOT YET A RECALL ON THE PS MODULE/COLUMN FAILURE OF THE MALIBU?? *TR
ON JULY 27,2008 I STARTED MY 2006 MALIBU. ACROSS THE CONTROL PANEL IT SAID POWER STEERING AND I COULD NOT TURN MY STEERING WHEEL. I TURNED MY CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND IT WAS OK. IT HAS DONE THIS NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE. IT HAS ALSO STARTED GOING OUT WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. MAKING THE CAR VERY HARD TO STEER/CONTROL. THERE IS ALSO ALOT OF SHAKING OF MY STEERING WHEEL. SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING THE STEERING WHEEL WILL JERK TO ONE SIDE. IT MAKES ME VERY NERVOUS TO DRIVE IN TRAFFIC BECAUSE IT IS VERY UNPREDICTABLE. I FEEL LIKE THIS IS SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. IT IS REALLY SAD THAT SO MANY FAMILIES LIVES ARE IN DANGER BECAUSE OF THE UNPREDICTABILITY OF THIS PROBLEM. NOT ONLY IS MY FAMILY IN DANGER BUT THE LIVES OF OTHERS AS WELL. *TR
BUMP SOUND IN FRONT END WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP OR BRAKING AND TURNING. DEALER SAYS IT IS A POWER STEERING SHAFT. THEY LUBRICATED IT AND TIGHTENED IT BEFORE WARRANTY EXPIRED. WITHIN 1,000 MILES PROBLEMS RETURNED. NOW WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND IT'S MY PROBLEM ALTHOUGH GM HAS A REPLACEMENT STEERING SHAFT THAT WILL CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR
POWER STEERING GOES OUT OF MY 2006 CHEVY MALIBU NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE DRIVING. PURCHASED THE VEHICLE APRIL 2008, STARTED IN JULY AND HAD TOWED AND LOOKED AT BY CHEVY DEALER IN MY TOWN. FOUND NOTHING, WENT OUT ON A REGULAR BASIS IN SEPTEMBER AND HAD CHECKED AGAIN ADVISED BY DEALER THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS AND WOULD COST $660. TO TAKE THE STEERING COLUMN APART TO SEE IF IT'S THE SENSOR THERE. USUALLY DOESN'T GO OUT AS MUCH IN THE COOLER WEATHER MORE OFTEN WHEN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS OVER 60 DEGREES. NOW GOES OUT IN THE COLD WEATHER TOO. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 1 -75 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD HAVE A LOT OF "PLAY". THE WHEEL WOULD MAKE DRIVING EASY AT TIMES, BUT HARDER AT OTHER TIMES. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT MOVING, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD CONTINUE TO MOVE AROUND. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS OR TURNING INTO A TIGHT SPACE, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO ESTIMATE HOW FAR TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 59,000. THE DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN DUE TO A FAULTY TORQUE SENSOR AND THE STEERING WHEEL PONSITION SENSOR. UPDATED 09/18/08. *JB
APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS AGO, I STARTED FEELING A TUG IN MY STEERING WHEN I WOULD MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN. THEN IT GRADUALLY MOVED TO A PULLING OF MY STEERING WHEEL, WHERE YOU COULD VISIBLY SEE MY STEERING WHEEL MOVE WITHOUT ME TOUCHING IT. THEN AT TIMES IT ALMOST FELT LIKE YOU WERE STEERING ON AN ICY ROAD. WITHIN THE LAST MONTH I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING MY POWER STEERING GOING COMPLETELY OUT. NUMEROUS TIMES I HAVE HAD TO TURN OFF MY CAR THEN RESTART IT TO RESET IT. THERE HAS BEEN THREE INSTANCES WERE MY HUSBAND OR MYSELF HAS BEEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY AND MY MESSAGE BOARD SOUND WITH A MESSAGE "POWER STEERING", THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT, THEN IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE. WE HAVE HAD TO QUICKLY TRY TO GET OVER TO THE SHOULDER TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND ON. MY HUSBAND CAN PHYSICALLY STEER THE CAR WHEN IT IS LIKE THAT, I CAN NOT THOUGH. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A TREMENDOUS HAZARD AND I AM CONCERNED WITH GETTING IN AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF IT. WE WENT TO THE REPAIR SHOP (CAR IS PAST THE WARRANTY) AND THEY SAID THE ESTIMATE WILL BE CLOSE TO $3,500. APPARENTLY THEY HAVE HAD TO FIX 2 MALIBU'S ALREADY AND KNEW EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. IT IS ASHAMED THAT THIS HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL. I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINT ON THE INTERNET, BUT HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING FROM CHEVROLET. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING SHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,000.
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY MALIBU. I PURCHASED IT USED AND HAD ISSUES WITH THE STEERING. THE DEALER WORKED ON IT, REPLACED SOMETHING IN THE STEERING COLUMN AFTER MY BRINGING IT TO THEM SEVERAL TIMES. NOW A YEAR LATER AND NOW THAT MY WARRANTY IS NOT VALID ANYMORE. THEY AREN'T WANTING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE SAME ISSUE THEY FIXED BEFORE. I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THE STEERING SLIPS, MAKES NOISE AND SOMETIMES DOESN'T COMPLETE THE TURN AS IT SHOULD. I HEAR OF THIS HAPPENING ALL OF THE TIME WITH NUMEROUS CHEVERLOT MODELS. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. I WILL NOT BY ANOTHER CHEVERLOT IF THEY DON'T TAKE BETTER CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS THAN THIS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE WASHING THE VEHICLE, THE CONSUMER NOTICED SMOKE AND FLAMES ON THE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO PUT OUT THE FIRE WITH A WATER HOSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER; HOWEVER, THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE SOURCE OF THE FIRE AND WILL NOT ASSUME LIABILITY. THE WARRANTY IS VALID; HOWEVER, THE DEALER IS STILL UNABLE TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE INSURANCE COMPANY SHOULD ASSIST HIM WITH REPAIRING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60000. UPDATED 08/12/08 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE FIRE STARTED FROM THE SPEAKER. FUSES HAD BEEN BLOWING FOR THE PAST TWO MONTHS. UPDATED 08/13/08
CAR WAS IN THIS CONDITION WHEN WE BOUGHT. THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS PURCHASED FROM SENT IT OFF TO BE REPAIRED. THE DEALERSHIP THAT IT WAS REPAIRED AT REPLACED STEERING COLUMN. WHEN WE GOT THE CAR BACK IT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. DEALER WOULD NOT SEND THE CAR BACK TO BE REPAIR UNTIL 2 MONTHS LATER WHEN I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IT COMPLETELY LOCK UP. THE DEALER SENT IT BACK TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND THE REPLACED THE POWER STEERING MOTOR. 2 MONTHS LATER WE BEGAN TO HAVE THE SAME STEERING PROBLEMS. I HAVE ALMOST GOTTEN IN 3 ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ALONG THE HIGHWAY AND SLOWED DOWN TO TURN TO GO TO THE PHARMACY. MY STEERING WENT COMPLETELY OUT AND I HAD TO COAST OFF ROAD INTO PHARMACY PARKING LOT. UNABLE TO TURN STEERING WHEEL. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED. STEERING MOTOR WAS OUT ON CAR. IT COSTS ALMOST $900 FOR REPAIR. NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. SERVICE DEPT TOLD ME HE HAD SEEN OTHER CHEVY MALIBU'S WITH SAME PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS TURNING OFF OF A BRIDGE AND THE STEERING LOCKED UP. I ALMOST HIT A HOUSE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, I BOUGHT IT FROM THEM NEW, NOT USED. THEY KEPT IT FOR 2 WEEKS AND THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. IT HAS BEEN LOCKING UP OFF AND ON EVER SINCE. NOW I HAVE NO POWER STEERING. THEY TOLD ME EVERY TIME I BROUGHT IT IN TO THE DEALER, THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM. NOW IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY SAY THEY CAN FIX IT. I HAVE TO BUY A NEW STEERING COLUMN AND PAY THEM TO INSTALL IT. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. WILL IT TAKE PEOPLE GETTING KILLED FOR SOMETHING TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION? *TR
STEERING WHEEL JERKS UNCONTROLLABLY. HAVE TAKEN IT TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR TWICE. STEERING COLUMN REPLACED FIRST TIME AND SECOND TIME WAS TOLD NO MECHANICAL PROBLEMS. HOWEVER DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THE STEERING WHEEL JERKS SO BAD THAT IT WILL PULL VEHICLE FROM ONE LANE TO NEXT OR IT WILL PULL VEHICLE ALL OVER THE ROADWAY. *TR
HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR 14 MONTHS AND I AM GETTING READY TO REPLACE THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS FOR THE THIRD TIME. AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS, YOU CAN FEEL THE BRAKES PULSING, WORSE AT SOFT BRAKING THAN HARD. I'VE ALSO HAD THE ROTORS TURNED AND PUT BACK ON ONCE AND THE PROBLEM RETURNED IN LESS THAN A MONTH. *TR
HEARD A CLUNKING NOISE WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT. BULLETIN SAID TO LUBE STEERING SO THEY DID. HAVING SAME PROBLEM 4 MONTHS LATER, CALLED ANOTHER DEALER, SAYS THERE IS A BULLETIN TO REPLACE DRIVE SHAFT. ALSO HAD CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACED WHEN VIBRATION STARTED WHEN FIRST ACCELERATING TILL ABOUT 20MPH,THEN COOLING DRAIN PLUG MELTED FROM THE HEAT OF THE CONVERTER AND POURED WATER ONTO PASSENGER FRONT FLOOR THEY FIXED THAT VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS CAR(BUT LOVE THE PRICE AND MILEAGE). *TR
WE STARTED HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT AT VERY LOW SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY IN WARM WEATHER, ONLY OCCASIONALLY. THEN THE PROBLEM WORSENED WITH THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT FREQUENTLY WHEN TURNING TO THE RIGHT. ONLY AFTER WE HAD OBTAINED 100000 MILES ON THE CAR DID WE RECEIVE A LETTER FROM THE GM COMPANY STATING THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING AND UPON CONTACTING GM COMPANY THEY REFUSED TO FIX THEIR FACTORY INSTALLED DEFECTIVE PROBLEM STATING IT WAS OUR PROBLEM. THEY REFUSE TO FIX THE STEERING PROBLEM AND IT HAS CAUSED US TO HAVE CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH CRASHES. THE CAR IS EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN FOR MY WIFE AND IS A REAL CRASH HAZARD. IT WAS THEIR MISTAKE, BUT THEY REFUSE TO HONOR THEIR COMMITMENT TO CAR SAFETY LIKE THEY ADVERTISE ON TV. IT IS THEIR PROBLEM AND THEY SHOULD HONOR THEIR SAFETY COMMITMENT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE CAR FIXED AT THEIR EXPENSE NOT OURS SINCE IT IS THEIR MISTAKE. *TR

MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED FROM THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT AND WAS TOTALED, SO HOW CAN IT BE THAT NO AIR BAGS WERE DEPLOYED? I HAVE A REPORT FROM GM THAT SAID THAT THE AIR BAGS FUNCTIONED AS DESIGNED. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL AND WAS GETTING ON THE FREEWAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING WENT OUT MAKING IT VERY HARD TO STEER THE CAR. I OWN A 2006 CHEV MALIBU SS. ALL WAS FINE UNTIL A YEAR AGO. I NOTICED A "BUMP" IN THE STEERING WHILE TURNING LEFT. DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD LUBE THE STEERING SHAFT. NOW THERE IS A "BUMP IN STEERING AND FOLLOW UP BUMP AS THE WHEELS RETURN TO STRAIGHT. THERE IS ALSO A RUBBING NOISE WHILE TURNING. THE CAR IS ALSO PULLING TO THE RIGHT. I HAD THE ALIGNMENT CHECKED AND IT WAS IN PERFECT ORDER. AFTER THE "CHECKUP" THE CAR PULLED HARDER TO THE RIGHT AND THE "NOISES" WERE MORE PRONOUNCED. I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 1997 FOR ISSUES THAT SOUND ALL TOO FAMILIAR. CHEVY IS FIXING MY CAR UNDER MY WARRANTY. APPROXIMATE INCIDENT DATE IS "ABOUT" WHEN THE ISSUES FIRST STARTED. *TR

MY CAR WAS DRIVING DECENT THEN ONE DAY OUT OF THE BLUE I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. AFTER SITTING FOR A WHILE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG IT RESET ITSELF. THEN WHILE TURNING IN A MAJOR INTERSECTION IT WENT OUT AGAIN LEAVING ME BARELY ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION ON TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OUT OF TRAFFIC. AGAIN THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT 4 MORE TIMES THAT DAY ON MY WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TELL ME IT HAS TO HAVE A NEW STEERING COLUMN AND MOTOR WHICH WE DO TO THE SOUND OF $500. TWO MONTHS LATER BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND IT STARTS AGAIN. I HAVE 3 YOUNG CHILDREN AND AFRAID THAT ONE DAY WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION SINCE THERE IS NO WARNING WHEN THIS MAY OCCUR. AT 46,500 MILES , MY STEERING STARTED MAKING A CLICKING NOISE. THE CHEVROLET DEALER DIAGNOSED IT AS A BAD RACK AND PINION AND STEERING SHAFT. THE BOOTS ARE INTACT. THEY GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF OVER $1,200 FOR REPAIRS. *TR

A SHORT TIME LATER, WHILE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ON BOARD DISPLAY LISTED ISSUE AS POWER STEERING. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE POWER STEERING MOTOR 3 TIMES AND TODAY, IT HAS GONE OUT AGAIN. I LOVE THE CAR, BUT I AM TIRED OF TAKING TIME OUT TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. *TR

SINCE THAT TIME, THE RIGHT FRONT SPEAKER HAS BEEN REPLACED, THE INTERIOR DOME LIGHT FIXTURE REPLACED, THE ELECTRIC STEERING COLUMN IS INOPERABLE AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I PURCHASED A 2006 USED CHEVY-MALIBU ON FEB. 22-2008. WITH 3600 MILEAGE. AFTER DRIVING FOR 2 WEEKS THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK-UP ALONG WITH A BELL GOING OFF AND A LIGHT FLASHING STEERING WHEEL PROBLEMS (THE LIGHT STAYED ON FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME). I TRIED TO STEER WITH THE CAR OPERATING IN MANUAL STEERING WHICH WAS VERY HARD TO DO SINCE I'M 72 YEARS OLD. I LET THE CAR DRIFT TO A PARKING LOT AND PROCEEDED TO CUT THE MOTOR OFF AND START AGAIN TO TRY TO GET POWER STEERING IN AN OPERATIVE MODE. THIS HAPPENED TO ME A NUMBER OF TIMES . COMING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY THERE IS A FIRE HYDRANT AND THE WHEEL LOCKED AND I COULD NOT TURN AWAY FROM THE HYDRANT IN TIME AND I HIT IT. I WAS TURNING A CORNER IN TO TRAFFIC AND IT LOCKED AGAIN. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID TO TAKE IT TO SOMEONE THAT REQUIRED THAT I LEAVE IT OVERNIGHT . BUT THE SHOP WAS QUITE A DISTANCE FROM MY HOME. I WAITED UNTIL JULY AND CALLED THE SALESMAN WHO WORKS AT A DIFFERENT PLACE NOW AND HE SAID I COULD TAKE TO ANY CHEVROLET DEALER TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH ZURICH . THE REPAIR SHOP STATES THAT THEY DON'T COVER ALL THE COST TO GET IT REPAIRED LESS $200.00 OUT OF POCKET. I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE HAS BEEN SOME OTHER COMPLAINTS OR IF THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS TYPE VEHICLE. *TR
PER NHTSA BULLETIN 10020816 AND GM BULLETIN 060232007 COVERING STEERING INPUT SHAFT #22687711. THIS SHAFT BEGINS TO MAKE A CLUNKING SOUND BETWEEN 0 AND 16 MPH WHEN TURNING. IN ORDER TO STOP THE NOISE, I BELIEVE CAUSED BY THE WORN U-JOINTS AT BOTH ENDS OF THE SHAFT,THIS PART MUST BE REPLACED EVERY TWO YEARS. YOU DO NOT HEAR ANY CLUNKING ABOVE 16/17 MPH. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A GM SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE PART CAN NOT COME APART, AND I CAN REPLACE THE PART EVERY TWO YEARS OR LIVE WITH THE NOISE. REALLY. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER REAR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE AND WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WHEN THE U-JOINTS ON THE DRIVE SHAFT BEGAN CLUNKING WHEN YOU PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR. YOU REPLACED THEM OR YOU COULD BE WALKING. THIS IS A STEERING SHAFT. WHEN WILL THE U-JOINT(S) FAIL? WHEN I AM TURNING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE, OR PERHAPS AT HIGHWAY SPEED AVOIDING AN ANIMAL. WHAT IS AMAZING IS THAT GM KNEW ABOUT THIS DEFECTED DESIGN/PART AND YET KEPT USING IT INTO 2008. THE BULLETINS COVER MALIBU CARS FROM 2004 TO 2008, PONTIAC G6'S 2005 TO 2007, AND SATURN AURA'S 2007 TO 2008. I FEEL GM SHOULD BE GIVEN TWO CHOICES, FIX THIS PART WHEN IT STARTS CLUNKING FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE, OR BUY THEM BACK. *JS
