WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH TC LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON WHILE THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND TO THE WHEEL TURNING OR TO THE BREAKS BEING PRESSED TO THE FLOOR. ABOUT 20 MILES LATER WHILE SLOWING FROM 20 MPH THE TC LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE BREAKS FAILED TO WORK CAUSING THE VEHICLE NOT TO STOP WHEN NEEDED. CHECKED ALL TIRES EACH TIME TO MAKE SURE NO FLATS OR OBVIOUS ISSUES AND THERE WERE NONE.
I BROUGHT OUR 2006 MALIBU MAXX IN FOR A 5000 MILE TIRE BALANCE AND ROTATION.. I WAS INFORMED THAT I HAD TWO MORE BENT RIMS ON THE CAR.. THIS AFTER REPLACING TWO ALREADY SEVERAL YEARS BACK.. I WAS INFORMED BY THE TIRE TECH THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH CHEVY RIMS AND THAT THEY ARE SEEING THIS SOFT RIM PROBLEM ON A REGULAR BASIS.. THIS CAN GET EXPENSIVE QUICK AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF AND WHEN A RECALL WILL BE INITIATED? SOFT RIMS CAN CAUSE COMPLETE TIRE FAILURE AND BLOWOUTS WITHOUT WARNING AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS CAN BE CATASTROPHIC...
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE BOLTS BECAME SEPARATED FROM THE RIM OF THE TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT A VALVE STEM EXTENSION WAS NEEDED FOR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 166,000.
WHILE DRIVING 70 MILES PER HR ON THE HIGHWAY A LOUD NOISE AND SLIGHT VIBRATION WAS FELT. AFTER SLOWING DOWN, THE NOISE WAS NOT AS LOUD AND THE VIBRATION WAS LESS. ON EXITING THE HIGHWAY ONTO A BUSY ROAD DRIVING NO MORE THAN 45 TO 50 MILE PER HOUR THE NOISE WAS NOT NOTICEABLE AND THE VIBRATION SEEMED TO BE GONE. ON GETTING OUT OF THE CAR AND LOOKING AT ALL FOUR TIRES IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE NOISE AND VIBRATION WAS COMING FROM THE HIGHWAY SURFACE. ON PULLING OUT OF THE GARAGE THE NEXT MORNING THE NOISE WAS BACK AND THE VIBRATION WAS VERY NOTICEABLE. ROAD SERVICE WAS CALLED TO CHECK TO SEE IF THEIR WAS A FLAT TIRE OR A PROBLEM WITH THE WHEEL LUGS. ON ARRIVAL THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN DROVE THE CAR AND DISCOVERED THE BACK RIGHT TIRE HAD SEPARATED IN SEVERAL PLACES CAUSING THE SOUND AND THE VIBRATION. HIS STATEMENT WAS "SOMEONE UP THERE MUST LOVE YOU", THIS WOULD HAVE KILLED YOU IF YOU HAD CONTINUED TO DRIVE ON IT. THE TIRE WAS REMOVED AND WILL BE TAKEN BACK TO THE PLACE OF PURCHASE. 2006 CHEVY MALIBU WITH DEFECTIVE TIRES. THE TIRES HAVE SPLITS AND CRACKS ON ALL FOUR TIRES. THE TIRES WERE MANUFACTURED BY CONTINENTAL. GM SAYS THIS IS NORMAL AND SAFE. ONLY 28K MILES. *TR
3 TIRES WITH EGG SIZE BUBBLE(S) ON INSIDE SIDEWALL OF TIRE, TWO TIRES HAD 2 BUBBLES. FOURTH TIRE WAS REPLACED LAST SPRING FOR SAME DEFECT. DEFECT NOTICED DURING A BRAKE INSPECTION, ONE WEEK AFTER TIRES HAD BEEN REMOUNTED AFTER SNOW TIRES WERE REMOVED. *TR
UNIROYAL TIGER PAW P215/60 R16 OEM TIRE. DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, RIGHT REAR TIRE SIDEWALL BLEW OUT AND SIDEWALL COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM TIRE. SIDEWALL AND REMAINDER OF TIRE REMAINED ON RIM. IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF ROAD. NO VISIBLE SIGNS OF PUNCTURE OR IMPACT. *TR
2006 CHEVY MALIBU WITH DEFECTIVE TIRES. CUSTOMER STATES THAT THE TIRES HAVE SPLITS AND CRACKS ON ALL FOUR TIRES. THE TIRES WERE MANUFACTURED BY CONTINENTAL. *KB ALL OF THE TIRES WERE REPLACED WITH A DIFFERENT BRAND NAME. *JB UPDATED 09/20/07. *JB THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER DID NOT RETURN THE DEFECTIVE TIRES TO THE MANUFACTURER. ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL RIMS REPLACED OR STRAIGHTENED AFTER NORMAL USE. THE REPAIR SHOP INFORMED ME THAT THE RIMS HAD MOST LIKELY BEEN BENT FROM HITTING A POTHOLE OR RAILROAD TRACKS. NO EXCESSIVE SPEED OR HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS, OR OFF ROAD CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCED BY THE VEHICLE. YET, DURING NORMAL WEAR AND USAGE THE ORIGINAL RIMS ON THE VEHICLE EASILY BEND CAUSING THE CAR TO SHAKE AND THE TIRES TO WEAR UNEVENLY. *TR
