TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING CAUSED EXTREME DIFFICULTY IN TURNING THE VEHICLE ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE SENSOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FOR THE POWER STEERING MORE THAN ONCE AT RANDOM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO WAS NOT ABLE TO REPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 14V15300 (STEERING) AND HAD CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME FAILURE AT RANDOM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100000.

EVERY TIME I FILL MY GAS TANK, MY GAUGE STARTS DROPPING TO EMPTY, I GET LOW FUEL WARNING AND THEN IT WILL GO BACK UP TO FULL AGAIN. THIS CHANGE HAPPENS REPEATEDLY WHILE DRIVING. NOW MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. CAR SEEMS TO BE OPERATING FINE OTHERWISE. VERY FRUSTRATING, AS I SEE THERE IS A RECALL ON REPLACEMENT FUEL PUMPS FOR THE 2007 MALIBU *WHICH I AM ASSUMING IS THE PROBLEM* BUT NOT ON ORIGINAL MANUFACTURED PARTS, WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE IN MY CAR. I JUST HIT 74000 MILES. FRUSTRATING THAT AN AMERICAN MADE CAR IS GOING BAD SO FAST. THIS WILL BE QUITE AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR FOR ME IF INDEED IT IS THE FUEL PUMP... *JS
I'VE HAD MORE THEN ONE CASE WERE THIS HAS HAPPENED BUT THE FIRST TIME IT DID IT WHEN I WAS DRIVEN DOWN THE STREET AND THE STEERING WHEEL YANKED MY STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT WHILE I WAS DRIVEN FORCING ME OFF THE ROAD. GOOD THING IT DID NOT CAUSE ME TO HIT A CAR OR ANYTHING ELSE . THE STEERING JERKS EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS JUST SITTING IN PARK . YOU COULD BE GOING 0 MILES TO 60 MILES IT DOES IT DOES IT ABOUT 10 TO 12 TIMES A DAY . I WAS TOLD BY GM CUSTOMER SERVICE THESE IS A KNOW ISSUE BUT NO RECALL ON ELECTRIC STEERING YET . I FEAR FOR MY LIFE I HAVE ONLY HAD THE CAR 1 WEEK AND I'M NOT SURE WHY THERE IS NOT RECALL ON THE 2007 CHEVY MALIBU LTZ. I CALLED THE DEALER I GOT IT FROM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT ISSUE WAS KNOW BUT NO REPAIR NEEDED. *JS
I WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE MY HOUSE IN MY 2007 CHEVY MALIBU AND WHEN I WENT TO TURN MY WHEEL TO GET OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY I COULD NOT TURN IT. I PULLED BACK IN THE DRIVEWAY AND TRIED AGAIN, SAME THING. WE HAD A FRIEND COME OVER WITH A DIAGNOSTIC AND IT WAS THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING. FROM READING ALL OF THE OTHER NUMEROUS COMMENTS, I AM SURPRISED THERE IS NOT A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. HOPING GM DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.
DRIVING ON FREEWAY STEERING OFF TO ACCESS ROAD,WHEN STEERING WHEEL STARTED ALTERNATING BETWEEN PULSATING AND LOCKING UP. MANAGED TO GEAR INTO SIDE OF ROAD.I WAS SCARED.CHECKED TIRES. I DID NOT HAVE A BLOW OUT. CALLED FAMILY AT THE HOSPITAL,WHERE MY MOM WAS DYING,TOLD THEM I WAS GOING BACK HOME.DROVE REAL SLOW WITH EMERGENCY LIGHTS ON.STEERING WHEEL WOULD START GYRATING AT TIMES.THOUGHT ALL IT NEEDED WAS AN ALIGNMENT.GOT A ESTIMATE IN ACCESS OF 700.00. ANOTHER GOOD MECHANIC STATED IT DID NOT SEEM LIKE THAT WAS THE PROBLEM AS HE CHECKED IT WELL.WELL I GOT A BIG LEMON.P.S. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT I PARKED IT FOR A LONG TIME. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHERE THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THAT THE DOORS NEEDED TO BE LUBRICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED INDEPENDENTLY. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, BUT FAILED TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACTS SON LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED THROUGH A STEEL GATE AND ALSO INTO A TREE. THE DRIVER AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BRAIN INJURIES, A LACERATED LIVER, AND LOSS OF EYESIGHT IN THE LEFT EYE. THE CONTACT REQUIRED EXTENSIVE MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,798. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. UPDATED 06/23/16.*JB
I WAS CHANGING THE LANE. STEERING LOOSE CONTACT WITH WHEEL. WHEEL TURNED WITHOUT ANY CONTROL. LUCKILY NO ACCIDENT. BRAKE WORKED. I STOPPED THE CAR AND STARTED AGAIN. IT WORKED FINE. THERE SHOULD BE RECALL FOR THIS TYPE OF INIDENT
2007 MALIBU LT JUST SHUT OFF AT TRAFFIC INTERSECTION, ENGINE TURNS OVER BUT REFUSES TO START. THEN IT STARTED UP AFTER A FEW MINUTES LIKE THERE WAS NEVER A PROBLEM. THERE ARE NO FAULT CODES, NO WARNINGS, NOTHING TO SUGGEST ANTI-THEFT. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS???!!! THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME AND MY DAUGHTER DOZENS OF TIMES IN THE LAST 5 YEARS. I'VE SEARCHED ONLINE AND THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY UNHAPPY PEOPLE WITH SAME EXACT PROBLEM! HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL YET ON THIS OBVIOUS DEFECT? MY 17 YR OLD DAUGHTER HAS TO DRIVE THIS CAR AND IT HAS QUIT ON HER IN TRAFFIC SEVERAL TIMES AND I AM AFRAID IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO HER AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. IF SHE GETS INJURED, OR WORSE BECAUSE CHEVROLET REFUSES TO RECALL AND FIX THIS DEFECT THERE WILL BE A LAWSUIT AND A BIG ONE!
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR BAG NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT NO SOLUTION WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO DRIVER DOOR LOCK MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY POOR WIRE CONNECTION AND CONSUMER SEEKS REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING, THE TIRE TRACTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND HE WAS UNABLE TO TURN IT OFF, AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. HE WAS ALSO UNABLE TO USE THE SPEED CONTROL SETTING, DURING THAT TIME. WHEN HE ARRIVED HOME, HE WAS UNABLE TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE, BECAUSE THE DRIVER DOOR AUTO LOCK WOULDN'T OPERATE PROPERLY. TWO DAYS LATER, WHEN HE PUT THE VEHICLE INTO DRIVE, THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR DIDN'T LOCK AUTOMATICALLY, BUT ALL THE OTHER LOCKS WORKED PROPERLY. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE HARNESS CAME LOOSE AND IT CAUSED THE WIRING UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT TO CHAFF AND EXPOSE THE WIRING WHICH THEN TOUCHED EACH OTHER AND CAUSED THE MALFUNCTION. HE FURTHER ADVISED THAT, AS PART OF THE REPAIR, THE HARNESS AND WIRING WERE MOVED OVER FROM ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION SO THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD NEVER OCCUR AGAIN.
POWER STEERING CONTINUES TO LIGHT UP ON RADIO FROM TIME TO TIME AND MAKES CAR DIFFICULT TO TURN. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN I FIRST START MY CAR STARTS THEN GOES A WAY A FEW MINUTES AFTER STARTING. WAS ONLY HAPPENING LIKE ONCE EVERY 2 WEEKS BUT IT HAS BEEN BECOMING A COMMON OCCURRENCE LATELY. *TR
AS THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN FROM MY DRIVEWAY TO THE ROAD, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE POWER STEERING DISPLAY CAME ON. THE CAR WAS REVERSED BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY. THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED AND ANOTHER ATTEMPT WAS MADE, BUT THE POWER STEERING FAILED AGAIN. I UNDERSTAND THAT A WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR DATE AND MILEAGE HAVE BEEN OFFERED TO OWNERS OF THE 2005,2006,AND 2008 MODELS. #10183A: SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT - POWER STEERING ASSIST - (MAY 23, 2012) WHY WOULD THE 2007 MODEL BE EXCLUDED? THE REPLACEMENT PART IS IDENTICAL FOR ALL FOUR YEARS. *JS
FOR OVER A YEAR, MY 2007 CHEVY MALIBU LS V6 HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT INTERMITTENTLY WITHOUT WARNING FOR A FEW SECONDS AT A TIME. THIS AS RESULTED IN A COUPLE OF NEAR ACCIDENTS--ONE WHICH WOULD HAVE FLIPPED THE CAR HAD I NOT WRESTLED THE STEERING WHEEL INTO COMPLIANCE. I HAVE HAD THE CAR AT A CERTIFIED GM DEALERSHIP ON THREE OCCASIONS COMPLAINING OF THIS PROBLEM. THE FIRST TIME THEY DROVE THE CAR AND SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, AND GAVE IT BACK TO ME. SECOND TIME THEY DID DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND CHARGED ME A HEFTY BILL TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING MOTOR. THE THIRD TIME, AFTER THE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW POWER STEERING MOTOR THEY ESSENTIALLY SAID THEY MADE SOME "ADJUSTMENTS." NEVERTHELESS, THE PROBLEM HAS PERSISTED. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP WHO BASICALLY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO (READ, "WOULD DO"), AND ALL HE WAS AUTHORIZED TO DO WAS TO GIVE ME A VOUCHER TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF ANY VEHICLE ON THEIR LOT, NEW OR USED. THAT DOES LITTLE TO SOLVE MY PROBLEM. I JOIN MY VOICE TO THE CHORUS OF COMPLAINS ABOUT THE POWER STEERING IN THIS 2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU--WHICH IS NOT THE ONLY GM VEHICLE WITH THIS ISSUE. WILL WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE BODY COUNT PILES UP OVER THIS PROBLEM BEFORE GM IS REQUIRED BY THE NHTSA TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES FOR PROPER REPAIRS? *TR
POWER STEERING GOES OUT-STEERING WHEEL SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND VEHICLE IS EXTREMELY HARD TO STEER AND CONTROL. REPORTED THIS PROBLEM VIA COMPLAINT WITH NTSB AND WITH GM IN AUGUST 2013. WAS ADVISED TO HAVE DIAGNOSTIC TESTING COMPLETED ON CAR. DID THAT ($110). NOW GM IS RECALLING THIS DEFECT ON ALL YEARS EXCEPT 2007. WHY? SAME ISSUE AS OTHER MODEL YEARS. GM DIAGNOSTICS PROVIDED REPORT THAT STATES POWER STEERING COLUMN SHOULD BE REPLACED. THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN ALL OF THE OTHER POWER STEERING ISSUES IN ALL OTHER MODEL YEARS. THE 2007 MODEL SHOULD NOT BE EXCLUDED!! RECALL THIS YEAR AS WELL!! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU. AFTER THE CONTACT FILLED UP THE FUEL TANK, THE FUEL GAUGE OPERATED NORMALLY UNTIL 3/4 OF FUEL WAS LEFT IN THE TANK. ONCE THE FUEL WAS AT 3/4, THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD DISPLAY AS EMPTY. AS A RESULT, THE DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH FUEL WAS IN THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000. UPDATED 10/7/14*CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE TURNED OFF IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. THE FUEL GAUGE DID NOT REGISTER THAT THE TANK WAS EMPTY. UPDATED 3/11/2015 *JS
THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING ALL OF A SUDDEN. WHEN I GOT TO WORK I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF, AND WHEN I GOT OFF WORK THE POWER STEERING WAS WORKING FINE. SINCE THEN IT HAS STOPPED AND STARTED WORKING MULTIPLE TIMES. IT WILL NO LONGER RESET WHEN I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF, AND RESTART IT. WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE EPS FUSE, BUT I HAD IT TESTED AND THE SERVICE TECH IT WAS FINE. *TR

WARNING SIGNAL DINGED AND DISPLAY READS POWER STEERING. STEERING WHEEL JERKS TO RIGHT AND LEFT UNCONTROLLABLY AT ALL SPEEDS. POWER STEERING IS GOING OUT ON THIS VEHICLE. MY RESEARCH INDICATES THAT MANY, MANY COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN LOGGED ON THIS ISSUE AND THAT GM HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE WITH OTHER NTSB REQUIRED RECALLS WITH OTHER MAKES AND MODEL YEARS DATING BACK TO 2004. THIS IS A DEFECTIVE SYSTEM, HIGHLY DANGEROUS. I AM A WORKING MOTHER OF TWO AND THIS IS MY ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. I HAVE PAID FAITHFULLY ON MY VEHICLE AND DESERVE A VEHICLE THAT IS TRUSTWORTHY AND SAFE FOR ME AND MY CHILDREN! THIS IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS IN THAT THE STEERING WILL EVENTUALLY SEIZE UP AND A CRASH IS ALL BUT LIKELY THAT COULD RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS BODILY INJURY. RESEARCH INDICATES THE COST OF REPAIR AT THE DEALERSHIP RANGES FROM $600 TO $1200 - MONEY I DO NOT HAVE. GM/CHEVY REFUSE TO ISSUE RECALL UNTIL THE NTSB REQUIRES IT. PLEASE REQUIRE IT!! WHY SHOULD SOME HAVE TO DIE IN A CRASH FOR THIS ISSUE TO BE CORRECTED??? GM HAS ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE DATING BACK TO 2004 AND YET CONTINUES TO MANUFACTURE CARS USING DEFECTIVE COMPONENTS THAT ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I CANNOT AFFORD THE COST OF THIS REPAIR. FUELED UP AND THE GAS LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. GAS GAUGE WENT UP AND DOWN AND NOW STAYS ON. DOES NOT RECOGNIZE FUEL IS IN THE CAR AND ALWAYS SAYS LOW FUEL EVEN AFTER FUELING UP. BOTH CHECK ENGINE AND GAS LIGHT ARE STEADY ON. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. NO REPAIRS WERE DONE TO THE VEHICLE.THE MANUFACTURE WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE 143,000.
SERVICE AIR BAG LIGHT HAD COME ON. TOOK INTO SHOP THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A NOTORIOUS ON THE 2007 MALIBUS AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT...... STILL MAKES ME FEEL VERY NERVOUS TO THE FACT WHAT IF I AM DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND IT BLOWS OUT AT ME CAUSING ME TO HAVE A HEAD ON ACCIDENT!!!! NOW ON APRIL 3, 2014 I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND MY DRIVERS SEAT BROKE! IT TOTALLY JUST BROKE WHILE I WAS DRIVING! I MEAN WTH I AM A 5'7 FEMALE THAT WEIGHS 155 LBS! I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO DRIVES MY CAR! THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON MY SEAT BROKE! I KNOW HAVE TO HAVE THE SERVICE STATION IN TOWN LOOK AT IT AND SEE WHAT IF ANYTHING CAN BE DONE!!! I HAVE SEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS ON HERE ALSO FROM OTHER MALIBU OWNERS WHERE THEIR SEATS JUST BROKE ALSO!!!! THIS COULD BE DEADLY!!!! I EXPLAINED MY PROBLEM TO HIM AND HE SAID THAT WOULD BE MY DIME.... HE COULD CERTAINLY LOOK AT IT FOR ME BUT TO REPLACE THE SEAT WOULD BE VERY COSTLY TO ME! LAST WEEK MY CAR STARTED CREEPING WHEN I HIT THE GAS. MY CAR SOUNDS LIKE A BOAT. THE CAR SOUNDS LIKE ITS NOT GETTING GAS OR CHOKING. WHEN IT STARTS PICKING UP SPEED IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS DROPPING INTO THE GEARS. I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THAT HAS BEEN REPLACED NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIMING CHAIN AND WATER PUMP. NOW, I NOTICED THAT THESE ARE ALL THINGS THAT ARE COVERED UNDER CHEVY WARRANTY BUT THE ISSUES SHOWS UP AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS ENDED. CHEVY NEEDS TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THESE PARTS BECAUSE ITS A COMMON ISSUE. *TR

SO I LEFT & ON JUNE 15, 2013 WAS DRIVING HOME & EXTREMELY HOT AIR STARTED COMING OUT OF VENTS. IT WAS SUMMER & HEAT WAS NOT ON. THE SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I THOUGHT THE AIR CONDITIONER HAD GONE OUT & WAS BLOWING OUT EXTREMELY HOT AIR FOR SOME REASON. NEVER FELT SUCH HOT AIR IN MY LIFE IT WAS ALMOST GETTING READY TO BURN SOMETHING. MY DASHBOARD WAS EVEN HOT AS FIRE. GOT HOME & TURNED CAR OFF WAS SCARED IT WAS GETTING READY TO BURN.TURNED IT OFF & BACK ON & THE AIRBAG LIGHT WENT OFF. THEN TRIED AIR CONDITIONER & IT WAS WORKING FINE. ON 6-18-2013 TOOK BACK IN TO DEALER & THEY ASSURED ME IT WOULD NOT CATCH FIRE!!! I CONTINUALLY EXPERIENCE SUDDEN POWER LOSS WHILE DRIVING MY 07 MALIBU WHICH MY DASHBOARD ALERTED POWER STEERING LOST. AT FIRST THIS WOULD HAPPEN RANDOMLY, HOWEVER IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE ESPECIALLY IN WARMER TEMPS. I CAN NO LONGER PARALLEL PARK AS THE MANUAL STEERING IS MUCH TO HARD. I'M SCARED TO MAKE ANY SHARP TURNS AS LOSS OF POWER GENERALLY HAPPENS AT THAT TIME.IT'S EXTREMELY TERRIFYING TO KNOW AT ANY MINUTE MY STEERING CAN GO OUT WHILE GOING 60 MPH ON A HIGHWAY (WHICH HAS HAPPENED) AND I CANNOT MANEUVER MY VEHICLE HOW IT'S SUPPOSE TO MANEUVERED. THE DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL CAP WAS FAULTY. THE CAP WAS REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO INDICATED THAT THE FUEL FLOATER WAS FAULTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO PUT MY CAR IN PARK THE CAR KEPT MOVING. I HAD TO DRIVE TO A SAFE FLAT AREA TO STOP IT AND TURN OFF THE CAR. THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE WAS RIPPED IN HALF. THE POWER STEERING HAD GONE OUT REPEATEDLY AT DIFFERENT TIMES, BOTH WHILE DRIVING AND NOT. IT WOULD COME BACK ON AT TIMES AND NOW FOR THE LAST 5 MONTHS HAS BEEN OUT COMPLETELY AND IS A DANGER TO DRIVE. IT IS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND I DRIVE 3 CHILDREN AROUND REGULARLY. SEAT BELT IS RENDERED USELESS WHEN THIS HAPPENS , AS ENTIRE BELT PULLS OUT AND IS UNABLE TO BE TIGHTENED DOWN ACROSS LAP OR SHOULDER AS THIS HAPPENED WHEN I WAS DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY . IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN BEFORE A COLLISION SERIOUS INJURY COULD OCCUR . ON EXAMINING RETRACTOR I FOUND THAT PLASTIC COVER THAT COVERS AND ALSO IS TO HOLD SPRING CLAMP ONTO SEAT BELT SHAFT IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD DEVICE IN POSITION TO KEEP TENSION AND ENGAGE COLLISION LOCK OF BELT . DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE ON A PAVED ROAD AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS A DING AND THE WORDS POWER STEERING APPEARED ON THE DASH. WITHIN SECONDS I COULD NOT STEER THE VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY AS THERE WAS VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC, BUT I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO GARAGE. IF I HAD BEEN IN HEAVIER TRAFFIC OR TRYING TO NEGOTIATE A BEND/CURVE IN THE ROAD OR BEEN NEGOTIATING A TURN ACROSS TRAFFIC THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE HAD A TRAGIC OUTCOME. I WAS DRIVING ALONG AND HEARD A LOUD POPPING NOISE AND I THOUGHT I MAY HAVE RAN OVER A PLASTIC BOTTLE. I WAS NOT DRIVING FAST I WAS ON A MAIN STREET HEADING TOWARDS THE RAMP TO GET ONTO THE HIGHWAY. I LATER HEARD CLUNKING NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. I THOUGHT AT FIRST MAYBE IT WAS SOMETHING IN MY TRUNK. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO SEARS & THE MECHANIC TOOK ME INTO THEIR SERVICE AREA TO SHOW ME THAT THE SPRING WAS SNAPPED AND THAT IS WHERE THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM. IT WAS SNAPPED ON THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE SPRING - REAR PASSENGER SIDE. I ASKED THE MECHANIC HOW TYPICAL WAS THIS PROBLEM AND HE TOLD ME ONLY A MONTH AGO HE FIXED ANOTHER MALIBU WITH THE SAME PROBLEM - BUT THE OTHER MALIBU HAD LESS MILEAGE APPROX 80,000. I WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE - AND IT'S FREE OF CHARGE TO LOOK VEHICLE OVER. I WENT TO CHEVY DEALER THEY WANT TO CHARGE BEFORE THEY LOOK @ THE CAR AND IF YOU DECIDE TO GO WITH THEIR PRICE THEY'LL APPLY THAT AMOUNT TO YOUR BILL. IF THEY DON'T DO THE WORK - YOUR OUT OF THAT MONEY. HOW CAN THEY DO THAT? ALSO THE AIR BAG LIGHT WILL OCCASIONALLY COME ON AND MY FOB'S ARE NOT WORKING - I WAS TOLD THE FACTORY FOB'S MIGHT HAVE TO BE RESET? ALSO AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE TO LOOK AT. I OWN A 2007CHEVY MALIBU THAT APPARENTLY IS NOT RECALLED. I HAVE HAD ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE SHOWS UP. LUCKILY I HAVE BEEN IN NON-BUSY AREAS WHEN THIS HAPPENS AS I HAVE TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND RE START THE CAR. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO DO THIS SEVERAL TIMES. SOMETIMES THE STEERING WHEEL WILL PULL TWITCH THE LEFT BY ITSELF AND IS VERY LOOSE. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN SEVERAL TIMES TO BE LOOKED AT. I FEEL UNSAFE TO DRIVE MY CAR IN FACT I WILL NOT DRIVE IT. I HAVE TWO CHILDREN THAT I WOULD NOT PUT IN THAT CAR. SO I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW I AM SUPPOSED TO GET TO WORK AND TAKE MY CHILDREN TO SCHOOL, SPORTS, ETC. THAT MORNING ABOUT 10:30 AM, TRAFFIC WAS SLOWING DURING LIGHT RAINY ROAD CONDITIONS ON INTERSTATE 70, WESTBOUND, IN ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI, WHEN THE DRIVER OF THE CAR IN WHICH I WAS THE ONLY PASSENGER, APPLIED HIS BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND SLID INTO THE BACK OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF US, COLLIDING THE FRONT END OF THE MALIBU INTO THE REAR END OF THE MAZDA SEDAN IN FRONT OF US, TWICE IMPACTING THE MAZDA SEDAN, TOTALING THE CHEVROLET MALIBU IN WHICH I WAS THE PASSENGER. AT NO TIME DID ANY AIR BAGS IN THE MALIBU DEPLOY. I SUFFERED A TORN MENISCUS IN MY LEFT KNEE WHICH REMAINS SCARRED AND PERIODICALLY PAINFUL. THE TWO PASSENGERS IN THE MAZDA MAY HAVE BEEN INJURED, AS WELL. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS REQUIRED BUT NOT AT THE ACCIDENT SCENE. A MISSOURI HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER WAS DISPATCHED TO THE SCENE.
