REAR LEFT SIDE BRAKELINE FAILURE DUE TO RUST ON 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500, ON INSPECTION RUST NOTICED ON ALL BRAKE LINES. MANY SIMILAR REPORTS FROM CONSUMERS ON SAME COMPLAINT. NEWYORK BASED VEHICLE, TRUCK ALWAYS WASHED UNDERCARRIAGE TO REMOVE SALT FROM ROADWAY IN WINTER MONTHS. ALL LINES NEED REPLACEMENT...DANGEROUS CONDITION!!!!! PLEASE HAVE YOUR VEHICLE INSPECTED FOR YOUR SAFETY. NO DAMAGE , CRASHED INTO CURB IN PARKING LOT. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THESE VEHICLES SHOULD ALL BE REMOVED FROM ROADS AND FIXED AT GM EXPENSE. NHTSA HAS RESPONSIBILITY TO ENFORCE SAFETY RECALLS BUT HAS YET TAKEN DUE TO INFLUENCE OF OUR "NATIONALIZED CAR MANUFACTURING COMPANY". DUE TO THE GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP OF THIS COMPANY, ANY FAILURE TO ACT RESPONSIBLY ON THIS MATTER SHOULD BE SEEN AS "WANTON NEGLECT" BY THIS AGENCY FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC AT LARGE & NOT JUST THESE VEHICLE OWNERS. WHILE DOING A NORMAL STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I CHECKED AND THE BRAKE LINE IS CORRODED AND LEAKING NEAR THE DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE. *TR
REAR STEEL BRAKE LINE FAILURE DUE TO CORROSION IN A NONE ENCLOSED AREA. BRAKE LINE ROTTED THROUGH IN AN AREA EXPOSED TO FRESH AIR. FURTHER INSPECTION SHOWS ALL STEEL BRAKE LINES ARE FAILING DUE TO CORROSION. BRAKE PEDAL WAS LOST ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE TOWING A 29 FOOT RV TRAVEL TRAILER. NO INCIDENT TO REPORT. *TR
BRAKE LINE BURST AND RESULTED IN LOW SPEED CRASH. PROPERTY AND VEHICLE DAMAGE OCCURRED DUE TO CORRODED BRAKE LINES. *TR
I JUST READ YOU ARE INVESTIGATING GM SUVS FOR DEFECTIVE GAS GAUGES. I HAVE A YEAR 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO AND THE GAS GAUGE HAS READ ERRONEOUSLY FOR THE PAST SIX OR SEVEN YEARS. I HAVE RUN OUT OF GAS SEVERAL TIMES,BUT HAVE NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM REPAIRED BECAUSE THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME AN ABSURD AMOUNT. I BELIEVE ITS A DESIGN FLAW THEY SHOULD REPAIR FOR FREE. I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU EXPAND YOUR INVESTIGATION TO INCLUDE GM PICKUPS BACK TO AT LEAST THE YEAR 2000. *TR
THE FIRST TIME I EXPERIENCED CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE I WAS TRAVELING AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED IN MY CONDOMINIUM PARKING LOT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD NO BRAKES. THE REPAIR WAS DONE AT MY INDEPENDENT GARAGE WHERE I HAVEA BEEN DEALING SINCE 1983. I WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE LINES HAD "ROTTED OUT." THEY REPLACED 10 FEET OF BRAKE LINE. THE SECOND TIME I EXPERIENCE CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE WAS YESTERDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 WHILE APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT ABOUT 6:30 PM. FORTUNATELY THE TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT ON THE EARLY SUNDAY EVENING OF THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND. BY DOWNSHIFTING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO 2ND AND THEN 1ST GEAR I WAS ABLE TO MAKE THE RIGHT-HAND TURN AT THE INTERSECTION ONTO THE BERM OF THE ROAD. EARLIER THAT DAY I HAD COME DOWN THE BLUE MOUNTAIN AT STERRET'S GAP IN PENNSYLVANIA. HAD THE FAILURE OCCURRED THEN I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO REPORT IT. WITHIN THE PAST TWO WEEKS I HAVE TOWED MY BOAT ON THE PA TURNPIKE WITH THE TRUCK. GOD KNOWS HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD HAVE DIED HAD THE FAILURE OCCURRED THEN. FORTUNATELY NO PEDESTRIAN WAS CROSSING THE STREET WHEN THE BRAKE FAILURE OCCURRED - THEY WOULD BE DEAD! THERE ARE REPEATED REPORTS ON THE INTERNET OF CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURES ON THESE TRUCKS DUE TO BRAKE LINE CORROSION/ROT. IT IS TIME YOU FOLKS ACT. WHILE DRIVING HOME ON THE INTERSTATE I ENCOUNTERED A TRAFFIC JAM AND HAD TO APPLY MY BRAKES. WHEN I DID, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD TO USE MY E BRAKE TO AVOID A COLLISION. BOTH FRONT AND REAR BRAKES WERE LOST AND UPON INVESTIGATION I FOUND MOST OF MY BRAKE LINES UNDER THE CAR WERE CORRODED. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED THE FRONT LINES WITH A NON CORROSIVE MATERIAL AND AM IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING THE REAR LINE. I DID SAVE ONE OF THE FRONT BRAKE LINES. *TR
LEFT REAR TIRE BECAME "LUMPY" TIRE DEALER INSPECTED AND SAID CORDS HAVE SEPARATED REPLACED TIRE WITH DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER. FAILED TIRE WAS AN ADVENTURER FUTURA 265/75 R16 LOAD RANGE E. TIRE WAS ON CHEVY 3500 SINGLE AXLE 2WD. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 5 MPH AND APPROACHING A STOP. AS THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKES, THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS UTILIZED IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HIS RESIDENCE WHERE HE DISCOVERED FIVE BRAKE LINES EXPELLING FROM THE ABS MODULE. ALL FIVE LINES FROM THE ABS MODULE WERE SEVERELY CORRODED AND RUSTED. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR INSPECTION. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED, THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT ALL BRAKE LINES WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE CONTACT REPAIRED THE VEHICLE HIMSELF. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,797.
CORRODED BRAKE LINES BURST DURING BRAKING, LOSS BRAKING FRONT AND REAR LINES. COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE TOWING TRAILER. NO CRASH OR INJURIES. REPLACING ALL BRAKE LINES. *TR
I OWN A 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO P/U I HAVE APPROX. 58000 MILES ON IT ON 9-18-2010 MY WIFE WAS RETURNING HOME AND LOST THE BRAKES ON THE TRUCK SHE WAS TWO STREETS AWAY FROM HOME SO SHE SLOWLY PROCEEDED TO DRIVE IT HOME. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I NOTICED ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES SEVERELY RUSTED WITH ONE LEAKING INSPECTING FURTHER IT WAS COME TO A CONCLUSION ALL THE BRAKE LINES WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED AS IF YOU TOUCHED ONE YOU MIGHT COMPROMISE THE OTHERS. AFTER CALLING THE DEALER AND HEARING IT WOULD COST ME APPRX 3000 DOLLARS TO HAVE IT DONE I HAVE TAKEN THREE DAYS OFF OF WORK TO DO THIS THE BEST THAT I CAN IT CANT BE ANY WORSE THAN THE LINES THAT ARE ON THERE NOW...... *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SECURITY SYSTEM FAILED CAUSING THE VEHICLE NOT TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE MAIN WIRING SYSTEM WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REPAIR CAUSED THE HEADLIGHT AND RADIO TO BECOME INOPERABLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOR THE HEADLIGHTS AND RADIO FAILURE BEFORE BEING REPAIRED. THE HEADLIGHT AND RADIO WERE NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 119,694.
FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS WE HAVE BEEN HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THIS TRUCK STOPPING AT LOW SPEEDS. IT SEEMS LIKE THE ANTILOCK BRAKE KICKS IN, BUT THE PAVEMENT IS DRY AND THE TRUCK JUST KEEPS GOING, THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES DOWN AND YOU PRAY THAT YOU WILL STOP BEFORE YOU HIT SOMETHING OR SOMEONE! AFTER THIS HAPPENED TO US 3 OR 4 TIMES WE LEARNED TO BE VERY CAUTIOUS ON THE ROAD AND SLOWED WAY DOWN BEFORE COMING TO A STOP SO WE WOULD BE ABLE TO STOP, JUST IN CASE THIS WERE TO OCCUR. (IT DID NOT ALWAYS HAPPEN, ONLY WHEN IT FELT LIKE IT) HOWEVER, WERE ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE HAD TO STOP ALL OF A SUDDEN FOR AN EMERGENCY. LUCKY THAT NEVER HAPPENED. THE LAST TIME MY WIFE CAME IN THE DRIVEWAY AND CAME WITHIN INCHES OF HITTING OUR GARAGE DOOR, THAT WAS IT! THE TRUCK HAS BEEN PARKED FOR THE PAST 2 MONTHS. WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. ABOUT 1 1/2 WEEKS AGO MY WIFE TYPED IN "2000 SILVERADO BRAKE PROBLEMS" ON THE COMPUTER AND WE WERE AMAZED TO PULL UP 59 PAGES OF COMPLAINTS FROM CONSUMERS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS OF 1999 TO 2006 SILVERADO AND GMC SIERRA WHICH ARE BEING INVESTIGATED BY YOUR OFFICE ALREADY. THAT IS WHEN WE PUT 2 AND 2 TOGETHER WITH THE COMPLAINTS OF THE BRAKELINES RUPTURING UPON QUICK HEAVY BRAKING, AS WAS IN MANY COMPLAINTS ALSO, THAT MAY HAVE BEEN THE REASON THAT OUR SON HAD THE ACCIDENT WITH THIS TRUCK IN SEPT. OF 2010. HE WAS DRIVING IN VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE, CRAWLING ALONG, WHEN SOMEONE HAD PULLED IN FRONT OF HIM AND HE HAD TO SLAM ON HIS BRAKE - HIS BRAKES FAILED BECAUSE OF THE LINE BURSTING AND HE HIT AN EXPENSIVE TRAFFIC INFO SIGN AND DID $4000 DAMAGE TO OUR TRUCK. HE CHOSE TO GO FOR THE SIGN INSTEAD OF INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE AND PROBABLY KILLING SOMEONE. THEN WE CALLED OUR CHEVY. DEALER, $110 TO DIAGNOSE, THEN GM AND THEY REFUSE TO HELP US UNTIL WE TAKE IT IN AND PAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. WHILE PARKING THE VEHICLE THE ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM FAILED. AS HE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE THEY FAILED TO ENGAGE. HE HAD TO CONTINUALLY PRESS THE BRAKES WITH EXCESSIVE FORCE. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE TRAVELING 25 MPH THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE MAIN BRAKING LINES WERE REPLACED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 119000. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE BRAKES INSPECTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,758. PURCHASED 2000 SILVERADO NEW IN FALL OF 2000. ON 8/30/10 DRIVING SOUTH ON MERRITT PKY (CT) BRINGING DAUGHTER TO COLLEGE APPLIED BRAKES, VEHICLE STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AND SUDDENLY FOOT WENT TO FLOOR AND ABSOLUTELY NO MORE BRAKES. HIT CAR IN FRONT WHICH HIT TWO OTHER VEHICLES. PUT ON EMERGENCY BRAKE AND STEERED INTO GUARDRAIL TO STOP THE MOVING TRUCK. UNBELIEVABLY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE, FOUR VEHICLES INVOLVED INCLUDING OURS. TRUCK WAS TOTALED. WE ALWAYS LOVED THE VEHICLE AND FELT SECURE WHEN DRIVING IT NOW JUST THE THOUGHT OF BEING IN ANY VEHICLE AND NOT STOPPING IS A VERY REAL FEAR. STATE POLICE OFFICER DID NOT CITE US SAID IT WAS MECHANICAL FAILURE "BLEW A LINE". THERE VERY WELL COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURIES/FATALITIES CAUSED BY THIS MECHANICAL FAILURE, WE WERE ALL FORTUNATE ONLY PROPERTY DAMAGE. PHOTOS WERE TAKEN AND SILVERADO WAS TOTALED. INSURANCE RATES WILL GO SKY HIGH NOW WITH SURCHARGE. CAN WE SUE GM? WE HAVE POLICE REPORT. *TR
THE BRAKE LINES FAILED ON MY 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500. THE VEHICLE WAS BACKING DOWN A BOAT LAUNCH RAMP AT THE TIME AND WAS STOPPED WITH THE PARKING BRAKE. THE TRUCK HAD TO BE TOWED AND ALL OF THE METAL BRAKE LINES REPLACED (THE BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE MADE BECAUSE GM DOES NOT SELL REPLACEMENT LINE). *TR

RUSTED OUT BRAKE LINES CAUSED LOSS OF FLUID WHILE DRIVING. RUSTED OUT FUEL LINE CAUSED FUEL LEAK WHILE DRIVING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT WAS ENTERING A RESIDENTIAL GARAGE AT 2 MPH WITH THE BRAKES DEPRESSED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL FELL MUCH FURTHER INTO THE FLOORBOARD THAN USUAL. THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP AND THE CONTACT HAD TO ENGAGE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LINE WAS CORRODED AND RUSTED. IN ADDITION, BRAKE FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM A HOLE IN THE BRAKE LINE. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL AND WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT WAS BRAKING FROM 45 MPH YET THE BRAKES WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING UPHILL AND WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO HIS RESIDENCE WHERE HE DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED PREMATURELY. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY ADVISED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO ORDER THE PART NEEDED TO MAKE REPAIRS HOWEVER, THE CONTACT STATED HE WOULD REPAIR THE VEHICLE HIMSELF ONCE THE PART BECAME AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 104,000. UPDATED 12/22/10 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURED DUE TO RUST. UPDATED 12/30/10
PRESSED BRAKE TO PUT INTO GEAR. BRAKE WENT TO THE FLOOR. NO PRESSURE. HEAR FLUID COMING OUT FROM UNDER DRIVER SIDE DOOR UNDERCARRIAGE. PRESSED FOOT BRAKE AGAIN. SAME THING. FLUID COMING OUT. NO PRESSURE. CHECKED. BRAKE FLUID LEAK FROM RUSTED BRAKE LINES. VERY BAD RUST. VERY DANGEROUS. BRAKE LINES SHOULD NOT RUST LIKE THAT. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IN A CAR IS THE BRAKES. THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD. I WORK IN THE QUALITY DEPARTMENT FOR A MAJOR US DEFENSE CONTRACTOR AND THIS WOULD NOT PASS STANDARDS. MAJOR FAILURE. GOOD THING MY DAUGHTER AND ME WERE STILL PARKED. I LIVE ON A VERY STEEP HILL AND THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY BAD IF I DIDN'T NOTICE PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, HE APPLIED THE BRAKES WHEN THEY EXTENDED TO THE FLOOR. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTICED THAT THERE WAS BRAKE FLUID LEAKING IN HIS DRIVEWAY. THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST PERFORMED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC INDICATED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKE LINES WERE DESTROYED BY RUST. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 105000.
FOR THE TIME IN 4 MONTHS, MY 2000 CHEVROLET K2500HD FULL SIZED PICKUP TRUCK HAS EXPERIENCED BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO RUST-THROUGH OF A BRAKE LINE. THE FIRST FAILURE POINT WAS LOCATED NEAR THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL IN THE VICINITY OF THE METAL LINE TO RUBBER HOSE CONNECTION, IN THE EXACT LOCATION WHERE THE METAL LINE RUNS BETWEEN THE FRAME AND THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FOR THE ANTILOCK SYSTEM'S WIRING TO THE RIGHT-FRONT WHEEL SENSOR. TODAY'S FAILURE IS LOCATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT DIRECTLY UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE ACTUAL LEAK IS IN A SECTION OF LINE THAT IS NOT OBSCURED BY ANY MOUNTING POINTS. IT IS OUT IN THE OPEN AND FULLY VISIBLE WHEN LOOKING INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHILE STANDING IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. SEVERAL OTHER SECTIONS OF BRAKE LINE APPEAR HAVE MAJOR RUST ISSUES ALSO. THIS TRUCK HAS 45,454 MILES ON IT. THE ORIGINAL BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER FAILED AT 26,XXX MILES. THE VEHICLE'S WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, SO I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR. I HAVE NOTICED THE BRAKE FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR OF THIS VEHICLE HAS A HISTORY OF TURNING TO A DARK COLOR WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD AFTER A BRAKE FLUID FLUSH, EVEN AFTER THE REPLACEMENT MASTER CYLINDER WAS INSTALLED. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SATISFIED WITH THE STOPPING POWER OF THE BRAKES ON THIS TRUCK. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, AND SINCE THE TRUCK WAS NEW I ALWAYS FELT THE BRAKES HAD A VERY "SPONGY" FEEL. EVEN WHEN NEW THERE WERE A FEW OCCASIONS WHEN I EXPERIENCED 'AM I GOING TO BE ABLE TO STOP' SCARES. I MUST NOW HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY, TO HAVE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM OF BRAKE LINES INSPECTED AND REPLACED AS NECESSARY. OBVIOUSLY THE TRUCK IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL THIS IS DONE. *TR
2000 CHEVROLET 2500 6.0 ENGINE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WARPING CAUSING THE MAIN BOLTS TO BREAK OFF LEADING TO EXHAUST LEAK AND POSSIBLE FIRE. *TR

THE METAL BRAKE LINE HAD FRACTURED AND CAUSED ALL BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE VEHICLE. ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD FRACTURED AT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE WHEEL. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT AT THE REPAIR FACILITY WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING REPAIRS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 135,000.

THE BRAKE LINE RUNNING FROM ABS UNIT TO REAR OF TRUCK RUPTURED IN A PARKING LOT IN JULY OF 2010. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, IN DECEMBER OF 2010, BOTH BRAKE LINES RUNNING FROM MASTER CYLINDER TO ABS UNIT RUPTURED WHEN BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. I NOTICED THE FRONT BRAKE LINES GOING FROM ABS UNIT TO EACH FRONT CALIPER WERE CORRODED IN EARLY MARCH 2012 AND REPLACED BEFORE THEY COULD RUPTURE. IT'S A GOOD THING I REPLACED THEM BECAUSE BARELY MOVING THE LINES RESULTED IN RUPTURES IN BOTH LINES BEFORE THEY COULD BE UNTHREADED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TRAVELING APPROX 25 MPH IN THE RAINY, WET EVENING OF JUNE 15, 2010 AT 10:30 PM TRAVELING EAST ON CR 87 AND TURNING TO GET UP ON THE OVERPASS BRIDGE OF EXIT 234. I STARTED TO HYDROPLANE WHEN I HIT THE GRAVEL, ROCK PART OF THE ROAD AND SKIDDED INTO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRIDGE HITTING MY PASSENGER TIRE AND BOUNCING ME OUT AND SPINNING AROUND. I WAS TOWING A SMALL DUMP TRAILER ON MY FARM USING MY 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. LOST ALL USE OF BRAKES. CRAWLED UNDER THE TRUCK AND DISCOVERED THAT BRAKE LINES ARE ALL COMPLETELY RUSTY AND HAD RUSTED THROUGH CAUSING LOSS OF FLUID AND BRAKE PRESSURE. *TR
2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO - SUDDEN BRAKE LINE FAILURE AS DRIVER WAS APPROACHING INTERSECTION, BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THERE WAS NO SLOWING ACTION WHATSOEVER. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO LIMP VEHICLE HOME USING EMERGENCY BRAKE. UPON INSPECTION, I DISCOVERED THAT ALL BRAKE LINES ON THE VEHICLE WERE BADLY CORRODED AND THE ABS TO REAR AXLE CHASSIS BRAKE LINE HAD RUPTURED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION. WHILE EXAMINING THE LINE THAT FAILED, I OBSERVED THAT ALL STEEL LINES ON THE VEHICLE WERE CORRODED VERY BADLY AND WERE LIKELY TO FAIL AT ANY TIME. WHEN I ASKED A MECHANIC ABOUT THIS ISSUE, I WAS TOLD IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THAT I SHOULD PLAN TO REPLACE ALL THE BRAKE LINES ON THE VEHICLE SOON TO HELP PREVENT ANOTHER FAILURE. A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 10 YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT HAVE METAL BRAKE LINE FAILURE DUE TO CORROSION - CLEARLY THE MANUFACTURER USED AN INFERIOR PRODUCT THAT HAS MADE THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVERS AS THE VEHICLE AGES. WHAT I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY AUTOMAKERS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO USE A STAINLESS GRADE STEEL OR SOME OTHER MATERIAL THAT IS NOT PRONE TO CORROSION/FAILURE WHEN IT IS FOR SUCH A CRITICAL SYSTEM SUCH AS THE BRAKING SYSTEM. AT LEAST A REQUIREMENT THAT IF THE PEDAL HITS THE BOTTOM, AS WOULD OCCUR WITH LINE FAILURE, THAT IT ACTIVATES A NON-HYDRAULIC MECHANICAL SYSTEM THAT DOESN'T RELY ON FANCY ELECTRONICS OR HYDRAULICS WOULD BE A BETTER SAFEGUARD THAN HOPING THAT THE DRIVER IS ABLE TO REMEMBER THE PARKING BRAKE WHEN HE/SHE HAS SECONDS BEFORE A COLLISION. I REMOVED THE FAILED BRAKE LINE AND REPLACED IT WITH A NEW STEEL LINE. I ALSO SPRAYED THE LINE WITH A CLEARCOAT PAINT IN AN ATTEMPT TO PRESERVE THE REPLACEMENT LINE. I THEN EXAMINED THE OTHER LINES AND CONFIRMED THAT THEY LOOK SOLID (FOR NOW); BUT NOTED THAT THEY ARE MORE EXTREMELY CORRODED THAN THE BRAKE LINES ON MY 1999 MERCURY COUGAR OR 1985 TOYOTA MR2. *TR
