TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS WAS NOT FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. THE ABS ENGAGES EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE STOPS. THE FAILURE WAS NOTICED AFTER DRIVING 25 MPH. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE DAYS LATER. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THE ABS ACTIVATION COULD CAUSE A CRASH. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
I OWN A 2002 CHEVY 2500 HD AND THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS I NOTICED THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATE AT LOW SPEED. I THOUGHT THIS WAS RELATED TO WINTER SNOW/ICE BUT THIS CONTINUES ON DRY PAVEMENT. I CALLED CHEVY CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS ADVISED THERE WERE NO LISTED RECALLS FOR THIS VIN. FOUND NHTSA RECALL 05V379000 & ACTION # PE05020 LISTS EXACT SYMPTOMS OF VEHICLE EVERY TIME BREAKS ARE APPLIED AT LOW SPEED. ESTIMATED TIME AND COST TO REPAIR 2 HOURS AT APROX $180.00 A CHEVY DEALER WAS CALLED AND I WAS ADVISED THEY CANNOT REPAIR WITHOUT AUTHORIZED RECALL PER THE VIN. THIS SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD APPLY TO THE LISTED VIN. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 10 MPH, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED UNEXPECTEDLY. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD EXTEND ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR OR FREEZE TO THE POINT WHERE IT COULD NOT BE DEPRESSED AT ALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER AND THEY FOUND A RECALL/SAFETY IMPROVEMENT ACT THAT LISTED THE SAME FAILURES AS THE CONTACT'S YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL VEHICLE. HOWEVER, HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIRS; THEREFORE, THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY OVER $500 TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 66,800.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. INTERMITTENTLY, WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BATTERY WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. AFTERWARDS, THE VEHICLE STALLED. NORMALLY AFTER THE FAILURE OCCURS, THE VEHICLE IS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED A NO-START CONDITION. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND THEY REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR, ON-BOARD ASSEMBLY IN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM, THROTTLE PLATE, AND REPROGRAMMED THE PCM. THE REMEDIES HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 138,000. UPDATED 07/24/09. *LJ
TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE DRIVING. LOST REVERSE 2ND AND 4TH. COMMON PROBLEM WITH POOR QUALITY TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS USED BY GM. SCUM. I HAVE A 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 HD 4X5 8.1, I HAVE REPLACED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR A YEAR AGO AND NOW I AM GETTING THE ERROR CODE AGAIN STATING ITS IS BAD AGAIN. THIS IS NOT A CHEAP PART AND VERY DIFFICULT TO CHANGE, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM. *TR

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK) WAS REFERENCED. THE FAILURE COULD CAUSE INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES DURING LOW SPEED BRAKING APPLICATIONS, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. THE RECALL APPLIES TO 21 OTHER STATES EXCEPT FOR KENTUCKY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER YET FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. WHILE BACKING UP THE VEHICLE AT 1 MPH, THE REARVIEW MIRROR BECAME UNSTABLE. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A TELEPHONE POLE AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS CRACKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT GM WAS AWARE OF THE REARVIEW MIRROR FAILURE; HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO CURRENT REMEDY. THE COST TO REPAIR THE DAMAGES MADE TO THE VEHICLE WOULD BE $4,500. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT SOMEONE WOULD CALL THE CONTACT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,593 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 14,661.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. THE FUEL INJECTOR THAT CONNECTS TO THE MOTOR HAS FAILED. THE VEHICLE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED. BROKEN EXHAUST BOLTS ON MY 2002 CHEVY 2500 HD TRUCK, I WENT TO THE LOCAL GARAGE AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD WORKED ON 6 OTHER TRUCKS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE WAS A GM SALES MEN THERE AND SAID THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING ALOT OF TROUBLE WITH THE BOLTS BREAKING ON THE 6.0 MOTORS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 3500. THE VEHICLE HAS GOODYEAR WRANGLER SRA TIRES, SIZE 215/85/16 (NA). WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE VEHICLE VIBRATED EXCESSIVELY. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS BLISTERING ON THE SIDEWALL. THE TIRE HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED FOR THE DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECTIVE TIRE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 87,000. UPDATED 12/30/08 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED GOODYEAR REPLACED THE TIRES. UPDATED 01/02/09. *JB
1. FOUND NEEDLE BEARINGS IN OIL DURING ROUTINE OIL CHANGE. 2. WAS TOLD ROCKER ARMS WERE FAILING, VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 75,000 MILES ON IT. 3. REPLACED ALL ROCKER ARMS, CLEANED OUT HEADS, REMOVED ENGINE OIL PAN CLEANED AND REMOVED ALL MATERIAL. *TR
BRAKE FAILURE, HYDRAULIC STEEL BRAKE LINES RUSTED AND BURST WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED RESULTING IN TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKES. ALL STEEL BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL SEVERELY RUSTED COSTING $1400.00. *TR
FLYWHEEL RATTLES AND VIBRATES. THIS IS SECOND OCCURRENCE AT 100,000 MILES AND WAS REPLACED BY DEALER THE FIRST TIME AT 50,000 MILES. *TR
ALL OF THE STEEL BRAKE LINES HAVE MAJOR RUST OR CORROSION AND APPEAR TO BE AT THE POINT OF RUPTURING. *TR
SILVERADO 2500 HD V8 BRAKE & ROTOR REPLACEMENT 37,800 MILES WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD 4 X 4 FROM FITZGERALD AUTO MALL. THE TRUCK WAS PAMPERED, NO ROUGH OFF ROAD EXCURSIONS, EVEN KEPT IT IN THE GARAGE. WITH ONLY 37,800 MILES WE WERE LITERALLY SHOCKED TO DISCOVER ALL FOUR ROTORS NOT ONLY HAD SIGNIFICANT RUST BUT METAL WAS ACTUALLY CHIPPING, FLAKING, AND CRUMBLING FROM THE ROTORS. ALL FOUR ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE BRAKE PADS. THE PADS HAD WORN BUT NOT [REPEAT NOT] DOWN TO THE "WEAR SENSORS" AND WERE REPLACED FOR SAFETY REASONS. THE COST FOR THE REPAIR WAS $1,150.00. WE HAVE OTHER VEHICLES "NONE OF THEM MANUFACTURED BY GM" AND NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE OF WEAR OR DAMAGE TO ROTORS. THE ONLY SAFETY RECALL WE WERE ADVISED OF AFFECTED THE TAILGATE CABLES. THE TAILGATE CABLES PREMATURELY CORRODED AND FAILED. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION SHOULD BE ALERTED AS THIS POSES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISK FOR ANYONE WHO UNWITTINGLY EXPERIENCES THIS PROBLEM. LEFT UNDETECTED THESE ROTORS WOULD HAVE FAILED CAUSING AN ABSOLUTE AND SUDDEN LOSS OF BRAKING CAPACITY. IF FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAD TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR RECALLING MILLIONS OF UNSAFE FIRESTONE TIRES - WHY HASN'T THIS PROBLEM BEEN ADDRESSED BY GM? *TR

I HAVE A 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 PICKUP TRUCK. DUE TO CORRODED AND EXCESSIVE RUSTED-OUT BRAKE LINES, I EXPERIENCED TOTAL BRAKE LINE FAILURE CAUSING ME TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. THIS HAPPENED IN NOVEMBER OF 2008 AND; I ONLY HAD 50,825 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AT THE TIME. LUCKILY FOR ME, I WAS (FOR THE MOST PART) IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. IF I WASN'T, I TRULY BELIEVE THINGS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE RESULTING IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH. THIS HAPPENED ON ROUTE 495 NORTH, A THREE-LANE HIGHWAY NEAR LOWELL MASSACHUSETTS. AS IT WAS, I REAR-ENDED A PICKUP TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME THAT SUBSEQUENTLY HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HER. FORTUNATELY... NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY HURT. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO THINK WHAT MIGHT OF HAPPENED IF I WAS DOING 65 - 70 MPH AND HAD TO AVOID ANOTHER VEHICLE OR BRAKE QUICKLY. I CONTACTED GM ABOUT THIS BUT NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY BACK. MY TOTAL FAILURE OF BRAKES WAS VERIFIED AT THE SCENE BY THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER (CERTIFIED MA MECHANIC), THE STATE POLICE PERSON, MY INSURANCE COMPANY, AND LANNAN CHEVROLET OF LOWELL WHO HAD TO REPLACE EVERY BIT OF BRAKE LINE(S). *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,012 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,200.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCES UNWANTED ANTILOCK BRAKE ACTIVATION WHILE DRIVING AT RELATIVELY LOW SPEEDS. CHEVROLET 2500HD W/ 8.1 LITER ENGINE, STALLS AND HESITATES. THE ENGINE WILL USUALLY RESTART BUT WILL STALL AGAIN. I STALLED IN AN INTERSECTION AND WAS NEARLY STRUCK BY A FORD MUSTANG. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSIS - CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. *TR
I AM WRITING REGARDING THE VERY POOR BRAKE LIFE AND PERFORMANCE FAILURE ON MY 2002 CHEVROLET PICKUP, 1500 SERIES PURCHASED NEW FROM A LOCAL DEALER. AT 19,500 MILES THE BRAKES WERE DIAGNOSED (ON 1-15-09) BY THE DEALER AS NEEDING COMPLETE OVERHAUL, A COST OF $571.00. THE PROBLEM WAS NOTICEABLE AT 12,000 MILES BY EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL, THE SAME WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. NO ACTION WAS TAKEN OR NOTICE OF BRAKE WEAR INDICATED BY THE DEALER WHEN NOTIFIED. BY 17,000 MILES THE BRAKES WERE NOISY AND WHEN INFORMED THE DEALER SAID MY REAR ROTORS WERE RUSTY FROM LOW USE AND I SHOULD CONSIDER A REPLACEMENT. UNABLE TO BELIEVE MY BRAKES WERE WORN OUT ( I'M 65 YEARS OLD AND HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLES' BRAKES WEAR OUT ANY WHERE NEAR THIS MILEAGE) I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT MORE OFTEN TO REMOVE THE RUST. DURING THIS TIME MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER, WITH ME AS A PASSENGER, NEARLY HIT A SEMI UNEXPECTEDLY BLOCKING OUR LANE, BECAUSE THE BRAKES WORKED VERY POORLY. THIS WAS IN THE FALL OF 08. IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 08, I WROTE TO THE DEALER REQUESTING COST SHARING FOR BRAKE REPAIR. NO RESPONSE.. THEN, IN LATE DECEMBER I WROTE TO GM , CUSTOMER AFFAIRS, IN DETROIT,MI. REQUESTING COST SHARING DUE TO PREMATURE WEAROUT. THEY REQUESTED THE COST ESTIMATE ON 1-15-09 AND THEN REFUSED OR DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE BASED ON "LOW USE". I AM WELL AWARE OF A BROAD PROBLEM WITH EARLY BRAKE WEAR ON 2001 TO 2004 (ADMITTED BY SERVICE REPS AT THE DEALER) LIGHT DUTY GM TRUCKS, MOSTLY DUE TO RUSTY ROTORS, ESPECIALLY ON THE REARS. THIS IS FURTHER EVIDENCED BY THE DEALER ESTIMATE WHICH SHOWED EXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT "CERAMIC" PADS, WHICH WERE NOT ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. THE DEALER ALSO ADMITTED THAT AT ONE TIME THEY TRIED TO ADD A "KIT" TO SHIELD THE REAR ROTORS FROM SALT SPRAY. THESE ARE ALL EVIDENCE OF DEFECTIVE PARTS, SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY WARRANTY REGARDLESS OF THE VEHICLES AGE OR FREQUENCY OF USE. OR COVERED BY A RECALL. YOUR WEBSITE SHOWS THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS ITEM. PLEASE ADD MINE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE CONTACT STRUCK A DEER AND SWERVED INTO A DITCH. HIS CHEST SLAMMED INTO THE STEERING WHEEL AND WAS INJURED. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AND THE SEAT BELT DID NOT RETRACT. THE DRIVER'S SIDE BUMPER WAS CRUSHED INTO THE FRONT GRILL ALL THE WAY ACROSS TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE INSURANCE AGENT, BUT NO POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. HE WAS THE ONLY OCCUPANT IN THE VEHICLE AND THE SEAT BELT WAS WORN PROPERLY AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH. THERE WAS NO MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON THE AIR BAGS OR SEAT BELT PRIOR TO THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GM CONCERNING HIS AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELT (COMPLAINT NUMBER 71-670143505). GM IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE AIR BAG FAILURE. IN ADDITION, NO ONE CAME OUT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,752.
STOPPING THE VEHICLE, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WOULD KICK IN AT AROUND 3 TO 5 MILES PER HOUR AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP, WOULD ROLL A FEW MORE FEET. ALMOST HIT A WOMAN AND CHILD IN CROSS WALK, HAD TO STAND UP ON BRAKES. THIS NOT STOPPING HAPPENED 5 OR 6 TIMES, THIS WAS THE CAME REACTION AS IN 2005 RECALL, CALLED GM. GM CHEVROLET CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER SAID, GO AND GET THIS PROBLEM CONFIRMED BY A GM DEALERSHIP, DID OCT. 9, '08 AND THEY SAID CORROSION BUILD IN SAME AREA, BUT BECAUSE RIGHT FRONT HUB WAS REPLACED WITH A NON GM PART (AFTER MARKET PART) THEY HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY. THIS HUB CAME WITH THE SENSOR ATTACHED. IN 2005 MY 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO WAS ISSUED A RECALL FOR SEVERE CORROSION AREA BETWEEN THE FRONT HUB/BEARING ASSEMBLY AND THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR. THEY FOUND THE LEFT SIDE SENSOR WAS MISSING AN O-RING, THEY INSTALLED UNDER THE RECALL. I WAS GOING NORTH ON ROUTE 106, LACONIA, NH IN MY 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO PICK UP TRUCK. A SCHOOL BUS IN FRONT OF ME WAS ABOUT TO STOP. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO STOP MY VEHICLE, THE BRAKES FAILED CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO STRIKE THE BACK OF THE BUS. THERE WAS A TRAIL OF BRAKE FLUID IN THE ROAD PRIOR TO THE POINT OF IMPACT. UPON INSPECTION OF MY VEHICLE THE POLICE OFFICER FOUND BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM THE AREA OF THE MASTER CYLINDER. MY VEHICLE SUSTAINED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE AND REQUIRED TOWING. THE BUS RECEIVED MINOR SCRATCHES TO THE REAR BUMPER. *TR
WHEN TRAVELING AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED AND ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM ENGAGES AND DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO STOP WHEN NECESSARY. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I TRY TO STOP AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED. THIS WAS CORRECTED ONCE BY RECALL NUMBER 05V379000, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN PERMANENTLY FIXED AND WE ARE IN DANGER EVERY TIME WE DRIVE THE VEHICLE. *TR
SUDDEN METAL HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINE RUPTURE ONE OF TWO BRAKE LINE RUNS BETWEEN THE MASTER CYLINDER AND ABS FRAME MOUNTED CONTROLLER RUPTURED. THE EXTERIOR APPEARANCE OF THE LINE IS EXTREMELY RUSTY. THE LINE IS IN A BUNDLE OF FOUR LINES - TWO GOING TO THE ABS CONTROLLER AND TWO RETURNING FROM THE ABS CONTROLLER TO EACH OF THE TWO FRONT WHEELS. THE OTHER THREE LINES HAVE EXTREMELY RUSTY SURFACES AND APPEAR NEAR RUPTURE AS WELL. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN BRAKING FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WAS MADE APPARENT BY THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY DROPPING TO THE FLOOR. NO ACCIDENT OR INJURIES OCCURRED. THE FAILURE IS NOT YET CORRECTED. I HAVE ONLY CALLED REPAIR SHOP FOR ESTIMATE. THE ESTIMATE WAS $400 TO $600 PER LINE OR $1600 TO $2400 FOR REPLACING ALL FOUR LINES BASED ON MATERIAL COST PLUS $82 / HR LABOR. *TR

I HAVE A 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD WITH A 8.1. TWO MONTHS AGO THE TRUCK JUST STALLED WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT AND THEN IMMEDIATELY RE-STARTED. SINCE THEN THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE THE TRUCK SIMPLY SHUTS OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING. IT HAS BECOME PROGRESSIVELY DIFFICULT TO RESTART THE ENGINE. I STALLED OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION THE OTHER DAY AND SAT THERE FOR 2-3 MINUTES TRYING TO START THE TRUCK. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO RHYME OR REASON TO WHEN OR WHY THIS HAPPENS. MY ENGINE LIGHT HAS NEVER BEEN TRIPPED BY THIS PROBLEM. AFTER READING THE TROUBLE CODES AND CONSULTING WITH SEVERAL MECHANICS WE DETERMINED THE PROBLEM TO BE THE CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR. AS I READ THROUGH COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE I NOTICE THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM. IT IS ALSO VERY DANGEROUS. WITH THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS AND THE LEVEL OF DANGER ASSOCIATED WITH THIS I WOULD HOPE THIS WOULD BE RECALLED FOR THE SAFETY REASONS. *TR

THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 114,000.
THE VEHICLE IS A 2002 SILVERADO 1500. THE FRAME CROSS MEMBER THAT IS LOCATED JUST IN FRONT OF THE GAS TANK HAS RUSTED OUT ON THE BASE OF THE MOUNTS ON EACH SIDE WHERE IT IS CONNECTED TO THE LOWER PART OF THE FRAME. THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE NOT ABLE TO BE INSPECTED IN THE STATE OF VERMONT. THE REGIONAL CHEVY REP SAID IT ISN'T A COMMON PROBLEM WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE IT MUST BE A DEFECT IN THE UNDERCOATING DONE ON MY TRUCK THAT ALLOWED THIS DETERIORATION TO HAPPEN. THE TRUCK IS WELL CARED FOR AND SHOULD NOT RUST IN SUCH A BASIC STRUCTURAL COMPONENT. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 HD TRUCK WITH 80,000 MILES. THE STEERING WHEEL 'PLAY' HAS BECOME PROGRESSIVELY MORE SLOPPY SINCE I PURCHASED THE NEW TRUCK. IT IS DIFFICULT TO SAFELY REMAIN IN MY DESIGNATED LANE WHEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THERE IS ABOUT 6-8 DEGREES OF STEERING WHEEL TRAVEL FROM SIDE TO SIDE BEFORE THE FRONT WHEELS TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. ADDITIONALLY, THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN, STEERING SHAFT, AND INTERMEDIATE SHAFT MAKE CLUNKING NOISES WHILE GOING OVER THE SLIGHTEST BUMP IN THE ROAD, AND WHILE TURNING. THE VIBRATION IS FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT HAS DONE THIS SINCE THE DAY I PURCHASED IT, AND GROWN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. MY LOCAL DEALER COULD NOT INITIALLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM (WHILE UNDER WARRANTY). I'VE DISCOVERED A CHEVY SERVICE BULLETIN 02-02-35-006A, WHICH HAS HAD MIXED SUCCESS. ADDITIONALLY, MANY OTHER OWNERS I'VE SPOKEN WITH HAVE HAD IDENTICAL PROBLEMS. (CHEVY SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 00-02-35-003K *JB IDENTIFIES SEVEN DIFFERENT MODELS THAT HAVE THE SAME MECHANICAL PROBLEM.). DEFECT SUMMARY: THE PARKING BRAKE FRICTION LININGS MAY WEAR TO AN EXTENT WHERE THE PARKING BRAKE CAN BECOME INEFFECTIVE IN IMMOBILIZING A PARKED VEHICLE. CONSEQUENCE SUMMARY: IF THE PARKING BRAKE DOES NOT HOLD, UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT COULD OCCUR, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. CORRECTIVE ACTION: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A LOW-FORCE SPRING CLIP RETAINER FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A PBR PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM. ON JULY 23 2008, I WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AND I LOST ALL STEERING, THE PITMAN ARM SHEARED OFF. I HAD INSTALLED THE FAB-TECH PITMAN ARM, IDLER ARM, TIE ROD ENDS, AND STEERING STABILIZER KIT. I FOUND OUT LATER THAT THE PITMAN ARM, AND IDLER ARM, HAD A RECALL. I CONTACTED FABTECH VIA EMAIL AND THEY TOLD ME WHO TO CONTACT ABOUT THE RECALL. I LATER GOT TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER GUY AT FABTECH. HE SENT ME INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO GO ABOUT THE RECALL TO GET REFUNDED THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE PRICE AND GET A CHECK FOR THE INSTALLATION AND FRONT END ALIGNMENT AND THEY ARE ALSO SUPPOSE TO SEND THE NEW IDLER ARM AND PITMAN ARM. FABTECH ASKED THAT I BOX AND SHIP THE OLD PARTS TO THEM AND THEY WOULD THEN INSPECT THEM AND SEND THE CHECK AND PARTS. I SENT THE PARTS IN AND THEN THEY DECIDED THEY WERE NOT GOING TO HONOR THE RECALL. I HAD COMPLETE STEERING FAILURE, LUCKILY I WAS IN A PARKING LOT WHEN IT HAPPENED. JUST HOURS BEFORE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. A RECALL IS A RECALL AND THEY NEED TO HONOR IT FOR ME AS WELL. *TR

I OBSERVED CRACKS IN MY TIRES ABOUT 1 INCH OUT FROM THE RIM. ALL FOUR TIRES ARE STARTING TO CRACK OUT ALONG THE BEAD LINE IN A CIRCLE AROUND THE TIRE. THE DEALER I PURCHASED THESE FROM SAYS IT IS NOT DANGEROUS, BUT HE IS WILLING TO CREDIT A SMALL SUM TOWARDS A NEW SET OF TIRES. WHY WOULD SOMEONE CREDIT YOU IF THE TIRES ARE NOT DEFECTIVE.
